Other than wanting to wrap Hailey in cotton wool and give her the biggest hug, how are you feeling/what are your thoughts after last nights episode?
This turned into an unofficial review of sorts and it got rather long, so I’ll post it all below the cut for those that want to read my thoughts.
I might be in the minority here, but I really enjoyed the episode. I kinda loved it actually, and it might be one of my favorite episodes. I enjoyed everything about it…the writing, the directing, the acting.
Gwen Sigan wrote the episode, but I gotta give her credit where it’s due because it was pretty damn good in my book. It reminded me a lot of her writing days prior to her becoming show-runner and I miss those days so very much.
I think the tidbits of Hailey’s past are coming way too late, but I still really enjoyed getting to peek into her life a bit more. Just wish we could have gotten more of it along the way and not three episodes before the character is gone.
I loved Kevin’s blatant callout to Hailey in the first minute of the episode of how she’s dealing and if running is helping her. He asks this question of “how are you doing…really doing?” with no words and just one look, and then we’re given the answer by Hailey deflecting and avoiding yet again under the guise of wanting a sugar fix. I think that was brilliant. It conveyed everything you needed to know about Hailey’s mental state in one short moment.
No Voight in the episode was such a gift.
Hailey being in charge and leading this particular case was the right move and she handled it so well. I’m bummed we probably won’t see her leading her own unit someday.
Also back to the no Voight thing just for a moment to say that it’s interesting to see how the dynamic shifted with the team versus him not being around and Hailey being in charge. The team felt lighter to me, like in the sense that they weren’t on edge, walking on eggshells in a way. Everything just felt calmer. There was still an intensity and an urgency to solve the case, but rules were followed, there was no off the book cowboy bullshit, and it felt like everyone followed Hailey and trusted her, whereas with Voight they were obeying orders that were barked out to them. I don’t know. It just felt really different and so very satisfying to me.
I love Kevin and Kim’s ability to communicate with one another with just one look between them. Makes me think of the early days of them being partners and being on patrol. They still work so wonderfully together.
This case was sick. A mother doing that to her own child is demented. Where these writers, and Gwen specifically, come up with these ideas is beyond me, but someone should probably do a wellness check on her. Like girly needs some serious therapy and R&R.
Josephine Petrovic. I had some hesitation with her at first as you usually do with a new character as you try and suss them out, but I’ve gotta say, I like her. I like her and I hate that I like her and I hate that she only just came onto the show because I would love to see what happens with her if she were to stick around, but I can’t watch this show without Tracy or Jesse — mostly Tracy — but neither of them? I just can’t do it. I have some other thoughts on Jo, but I will save them for another ask I received.
I obviously saved the elephant in the room for last…Jay. I really don’t think the mentions and nods to him in this episode were “bad” in any way because it’s stuff that has already been said about the character…Gwen’s version of him at least, but I do think there is a reason why he is being brought up and why there are so many nods to the marriage. Hailey insisted she wasn’t angry with him in the premiere. She signed the divorce papers, sent them off, and that was that and she washed her hands of him. Except she didn’t. Because she is angry, she hasn’t moved on in the year and a half he’s been gone now, signing the papers didn’t give her any closure…hell, even him signing the papers didn’t give her any closure, (I will die on the hill that he only signed them because it’s what he thought she wanted). I personally do not think she will get any closure whatsoever if she doesn’t have a conversation with him, if she doesn’t confront him and all of it head on…the anger and resentment and confusion and the love that is still there. You can’t turn that shit off. You can’t just push it away and be like, “okay, I’m done with you now, goodbye.” Life doesn’t work that way. Emotions don’t work that way. Grief sure as shit doesn’t work that way, and I feel like that is the stage Hailey is stuck in right now. Grieving the loss of Jay and her marriage and stuck in a limbo that she doesn’t know how to navigate on her own while dealing with childhood trauma that she actually isn’t really dealing with at all. And she is without a doubt on her own. That is the one thing that has been made clear this season. She has no family, not any friends other than co-workers, and right now, she doesn’t have Jay. I respect the “independent woman, gonna stand on my own, I don’t need anyone” mindset, but I don’t agree with how we got here and I also don’t fully agree with the notion that she doesn’t need anyone because everyone needs someone. You can’t do life alone. You need someone in your corner, someone by your side, someone who gets you in ways you don’t even know yourself, and for Hailey, that person is and will always be Jay Halstead. I think she will realize she needs to get out of Chicago like her brothers, like Jay, like Will, and I hope that wherever she ends up, Jay is there waiting for her and the two of them can just start over without Chicago and their past looming over them like a dark cloud. And for the love of God, let them both go to therapy…together and separately.
Brenna Malloy directed and it was just…perfect. True cinema if you will. The close-ups of the actors’ faces during certain scenes and how the camera would pan to them at just the exact right moment for a reaction, the no background noise and intentional pauses during scenes that allowed moments to feel heavier and more real, the ending shot of Hailey and her teary eyes…I feel like it was a story that was so delicately handled and crafted by Brenna, and I’m just really impressed.
Tracy Spiridakos. I mean, what more even needs to be said? The woman is a powerhouse. It always amazes me knowing how much of a goof she is on set and then you watch an episode like this and it’s just like…WOW. Her range of emotion and the way she makes you feel every single one of those emotions is truly something that needs to be studied. You cry with her, you smile with her, you laugh with her, but the biggest thing is you feel for her character, and I think that is something that not all actors are capable of doing with an audience. Tracy knocks it out of the park, across the highway, into the next town every time, and her execution is consistent every time as well. No one is doing it like her, and I love and respect the hell out of that woman and her talent.
I think the same also needs to be said for Bojana Novakovic. I have been surprisingly impressed by her and kind of adore her. I’ve really been enjoying the character of Josephine Petrovic and I hate that she’s only coming into the show now right when Tracy is walking out the door because Bojana alone is incredible, but her and Tracy together? It’s like magic to me. Their chemistry as scene partners and the way they bounce off each other is absolutely insane, and then their ability to pull you in and keep you locked in…ooof. I think it’s something special and I’ve really enjoyed seeing them together on-screen.
As for how I feel…
I feel good? Okay? The episode didn’t do much for me in the grand scheme of “what is Hailey gonna do” or “what’s gonna happen” because we already anticipated her leaving Chicago. That wasn’t ever in question. But the actual reason for Hailey leaving is still muddled to me, even more so because she hasn’t resolved anything in her life. She still has these demons, a past filled with trauma she hasn’t found peace with, she has no closure with Jay, she has questions and zero answers, and she is already and literally running from her problems.
So, is she supposed to leave Chicago and start over somewhere and her problems are just gonna go poof? Magically disappear? Because that’s not how that works, and I think that would be yet another injustice to the character and more lazy writing. I do think the episode (finally!) laid the groundwork for Tracy’s exit, but it should have started in episode 1, not 10. Tracy gave them an entire season to wrap up Hailey’s story, and I feel like they wasted so much time and it’s gonna be another rushed exit once the curtain falls. It’s not that I’m surprised in that regard, but I am disappointed (again!) especially considering how much of a fuss Gwen made about “it’s so generous of Tracy to give us a whole season.”
If Gwen’s plan was to make Hailey’s exit about her family and her childhood trauma then the seed should have been planted long before now, and Jay shouldn’t still be a sore subject for her. I think we’re in for a really emotional ending to the season, not just for Hailey, but for the first time since season eight I’m actually looking forward to a finale again.
In conclusion and a very long story short…I loved the episode, but Gwen Sigan is still on my shit list.

An angry Miles is what I want to see in the sequel, he has earned that right! I want to see him lashing out, unforgiving and downright mean because that boy has been hurt by everyone he has ever trusted. So if he’s a little nasty, let him be! They couldn’t respect the nice and sweet Miles, now they get the angry one.
Black children are supposed to take everything thrown at them with a smile and letting it roll off the shoulders. Never complain and always be the one in control of every negative emotion to not scare people. Fuck that! I am so tired of black children’s anger being some kind of ticking time bomb and not a normal emotion that everyone feels. Tired of black children being demonized for just the idea of them being angry.
I want Miles to let loose on everyone, want him to scream and yell at Gwen and Peter for leaving him behind and making him the last to know. I want Miles to hurt Miguel for thinking less of him and actively blaming him for Peter’s death. I want Miles to hurt Spot for even trying to take away his family. I want him to callout the Spider Society for treating him like some criminal and chasing him. I want him to be ruthless and that may sound wrong but I’m tired of little black children having to hold onto everything and carry that angry and resentment around like a suitcase and just chuck it at the people who gave it to them!
Let Miles be angry and let him have that moment! Lord knows he’s earned it!

not to stir the pot but i’ve seen some really shitty takes recently about arthur being gay and completely erasing gwen’s importance to him. what are your thoughts?
oof well that is in fact a loaded question but I genuinely feel your frustration so let's give this a shot lmao
the short of it, to quote a friend of mine: 2012 tumblr called and wants its shitty shipping discourse back (derogatory)
the slightly longer of it.... to start this off, no one has to ship anything. no one's saying that anyone has to ship anything, or headcanon characters a certain way, or that you're not "allowed" to say that you don't ship certain ships. that's just . not a thing that's happening, and I do wanna reiterate strongly that you don't have to ship anything.
that said, well. maybe if you find yourself with the urge to nail your 'why i don't ship this canon interracial couple' against the proverbial church doors, you should ask yourself.... why is it always the black characters you find "badly written." why is it always the black and the white character who have "no chemistry." why is it always the black character you find unrelatable, that you think would be soo much better suited dating another character of color, etc. etc. These things do not happen in a vacuum, and you don't need to hate or even dislike that character to play into tropes, stereotypes, and issues that very many people have very extensively explained to be less than stellar, to put it mildly.
And Imma come out and say this: fandom is not activism, you don't need to be a loud, outspoken activist and/or turn this into anything more than a hobby. if, even amongst the discussions had in the last years, you have never once stopped to ask yourself how you might deal with the internalized racism that we're all dealing with, how it might affect people in the spaces you share while doing your hobby, then, frankly, you gotta do better. fandom is not activism, but we all have some basic responsibility of not causing more harm than there already is going around. this should not be a controversial statement either.
you can ship merthur without invalidating and trampling all over the frankly brilliant fact that this show went and casted a black woman as queen guinevere. you can ship merthur without taking away scenes that are not about them - god knows there are enough. you can acknowledge that 75% of your shipping takes are subjective, that merthur isn't, wasn't, and was never going to be canon, and literally none of this takes away from the two generic white dudes whose faces you'd like to smash together. this entire fandom is and has been majorly about those two generic white guys, for well over a decade, and i'm saying all this as a white merthur shipper. like, this is the bare minimum. and yet, here we fucking are.
as for the arthur being gay thing - again, you don't need to headcanon anyone a certain way, but whenever i do see this specific headcanon it "somehow" always comes with an incredibly weird (to put this mildly also) understanding of sexuality, top/bottom discourse, and - you guessed it - takes on arwen, that are maybe something people might want to uhh. examine also.
this isn't a callout, or a call for a witchhunt, or or or. personally i block and move on, and I wouldn't have said anything more on this than a vague shitpost on my sideblog, but god knows i can never shut up and even less so when asked, and I do think that while, again, fandom is not activism and I'll stand by this, people should... try and aim to make some basic attempts at not causing harm. it's not even hard (although that should not be your measure but like, again. bare minimum). it really is as easy as not constantly invalidating and side-lining ships and/or characters, by doing basic research in how not to whitewash characters, why not to compare skintone to food when writing, etc.
On that note, none of these are things that I've come up with. A lot of people, especially fans of colour, have done a great deal of work to provide resources and education that are... incredibly easy to find if you can be fucked to make some effort. Imma link a bunch beneath too but like. Yeah I guess that's my take. You can ship whatever you want, genuinely, from the bottom of my heart. But 1. maybe sometimes take some time to consider what you're saying, 2. maybe take some time to do some basic self-education on some issues in general, and 3. writing posts on why you don't ship whatever ship has never accomplished anything beyond getting people who agree with you to stroke your ego, and step on the toes of people who don't. at best.
But also, last but not least, the block button is your friend and all that
Resources by people much better equipped to talk on these things than me:
How to stan the white guy with minimal contribution to fandom's racism problem
The racism in the Merlin fandom and towards Gwen specifically
Educating Merlin - a blog that's specifically tackling racism in this fandom
Fanlore on Fandom's Racism Problem(s) (use to find many links leading you to further discussions on it)
More Fanlore with further links
When white people talk about racism in fandom
Writing with Color - Resource blog for writing specifically, but honestly also covers so many topics that it's incredibly useful for doing some self-examination too
I'm not saying you need to agree with everything said in all of these sources, but also if your constant reaction to these discussions as a white person is to get defensive, to dismiss it, etc., I'm saying this in the nicest way possible: maybe sit with that for a bit. Ask yourself why requests like not constantly making fun of a ship gets you in such a huff. Etc. etc.
Lastly: if people would like to add onto this with more resources, that's highly welcome. That said, anyone clowning/harassing/being a bitch on this post will be blocked.

Sometimes I think I’m okay but then I remember how when Miguel threw his post Miles temper tantrum, he blamed Gwen for letting Miles go even though it was PETER B who took a minute for himself (using another teenager as a self insert for his failings) and answered her rightful callouts by kicking her out Spider HQ, forcing her back into her dimension and blocking any chance of her escaping all while knowing damn well the last time she was home her father pulled a fucking gun on her.
My dude,
WHAT THE FUCK.

What you think of the idea of Miguel being in a fascist position in Atsv? Like how Hobie clearly opposed him and everything
I'm new to the comics but I know he's from a super corporation fascist future, so I don't know we can exactly put him in that position, since he is slowly try to get away from Alchemax views
OH BOY asks that get me placed on three different callout posts fkjdshfkjdhskj
tldr: no i don't think miguel is in a fascist position in atsv nor do i personally think hobie views him as a fascist.
long answer:
How does Hobie view Miguel
I think, per his own political activism and the fact we don't see him shying away at all from active confrontation with people like cops, if Hobie sincerely thought Miguel was a fascist he wouldn't participate in the spider society's directive at all. He's really open about his reservations about how it operates, the fact he's mainly here to support Gwen and deeply critical of the harm Miguel stands to perpetuate in his pursuit of conformity to the canon*, but I think if it was an open/shut case, he wouldn't participate at all and would be making an active effort at radicalising those around him. The latter of which we don't even see with Gwen, who he's clearly close to. He only questions her decision to hide the truth from Miles.
* <- by this I mean his remarks re the Go Home Machine. For the longest time, Hobie (and the narrative in it's tonal presentation of the scene) characterising this act as something warrenting suspiscion really confused me because like. what else is miguel supposed to do. the villains will literally die if left in different dimensions and have been shown to go on to enact harm if left to their own devices.
But I think what Hobie the character is driving at, as he is in his entire conversation to Miles, is urging caution to Miles about committing to a cause that's so afraid of a repeating tragedy that they're pursuring conformity to canon at the expense of questioning the harm they stand to perpetuate (this extending to Miles once he's viewed as an anomaly), and Hobie is asking Miles to interogate that. Also like. as a punk anarchist of COURSE Hobie dislikes the idea of conformity informed by fear (not of Miguel I mean, but the wider supposedly unchallangeable cosmic power).
2. Is Miguel in a fascist position of power?
OH BOY the big one. Putting aside the entire thing that is being unable to apply fascism on a one to one basis because no sense of ultranationalism/centralised autocracy and the whole thing about universal collapse being real and not an imagined threat being used to consolidate power. imo no.
We see no evidence of Miguel trying to consolidate personal power with what little we see of the spider society structure. There's no inherent restrictions on the watches (aka Miguel doesn't restrict Gwen and Peter's personal freedom to Miles' dimension. It was up to Jess's discretion to handle the training of her protoge).
He seems to have just ended up the defacto leader by virtue of having created stable interdimensional travel watches, running admin on mission intel if the multitude of screens are anything to go by and being the living traumatised reminder of what rebelling against canon invokes to the rest of the people he manages. Other characters speak of his leadership not as if they're afraid of him retaliating against them if they don't do so positively (in fact Jess and Peter make fun of him to his face), but rather sympathetically to his past.
He's essentially like. the traumatised poster boy for their entire mission statement as well as the dude who coralled everyone into this for the purpose of trying to wrangle the damage anomalies were causing when spat into different dimensions.
Even him sending Gwen home, while really fucking nasty and awful of him to intimidate her like that, speaks less to me of trying to crush opposition by virtue of it being opposition, but rather an indication of Miguel's own sunk cost fallacy thinking, given how clearly atsv signposts Miguel's grief and guilt (w the latter i mean both at the intial skipping dimension action and his subsequent approach to canon w the society) as sincere. It's him hitting absolute rock bottom and betraying the responsibility he holds to Gwen as an adult yeah, but I don't read the action as one about consolidating power for the sake of such.
I think Hobie is aligned with the sincerity of the intention to protect people, otherwise he wouldn't be participating at all, but is deeply critical of both what the centralised nature of the watches promotes (the only avenue to helping the multiverse is with miguel) and the harm Miguel stands to perpetuate in pursuit of utter conformity to canon.
And when the latter actualises in the pursuit of Miles, Hobie peaces the fuck out with his alternate watch.

What’s interesting is that your Eve is the connecting point for people (Eve and Remi, by extension Sayu crew, Eve and Psyconauts, Eve and Pavitr, by extension the arachnikids)
Eve and Neon J are two people I see as connecting points.
Like you said, Eve is connected to Raz (Psychonauts), Pav (arachnikids), and Remi (Sayu Crew). She is someone who knows a lot of people, and a lot of people know her, but she never really connects with others, which is why she gets so lonely and attached to someone she does connect with.
Technically she could be slightly connected to Ex-Jay as well because she's connected to Zuke and DK West, and West is friends with Ex-Jay. I just doubt she would say she had a connection with them until after the Rock Revolution.
Neon is a connecting point more by association (and Kliff) than by direct links. Neon inspired Tatiana to perform rock because he was on a Lights Up Audition when she was a child. He is connected to Zanzo (haven't said this, but Zanzo stole Neon J's early robotic designs at some point). He's connected to Kliff directly which even allowed him to meet Kul Fyra and Zanzo. He's also connected to Miguel through monetary donations, probably met Miguel a few times.
Neon J is a person who always knows someone that is right for the job. He has lots of connections all around the world from just regular average people to high up national security leaders. His relationships are a lot more vague, and that's so I can add more or flex his knowledge of people as needed. Which is unlike Eve who has direct connections with people.
I like to think that Eve's connects a newer generation to the story (other teens and young adults) while Neon J connects the older generation (people in their 40s and up).
Other people have multiple connections as well, like Tatiana with Cyril (Ex-Jay) and the other CEOs of companies (Truman, Kale, Miguel), while Mama is connected through more personal relationships (Miguel and the Grove of Master Musicians).
Everyone basically has their own connections, but you are right that Eve is probably the one with the most connections, especially direct connections to people and not just vague or indirect ones.
I just think it's really nice to have characters connect in different ways with different people. This is not a callout because I do like these kinds of stories, but I do kinda see it as unrealistic that everyone would be connected to one character or a small group.
Like yes, Bunk Bed Junction is connected to all the NSRtists because of the revolution, but their connection with Nova is different from with Eve or with Sayu's Crew. Plus, B2J isn't gonna be connected to like Yiruk and Kayane the same way 1010 would be. Miles and Gwen aren't connected to Eve the same was as Pav would be even if Miles and Gwen become friends with her.
Exploring and making connections (both weak and strong) is something I love doing! Not everyone is gonna have a direct connection and even if they do get a direct connection, it won't be the same as other connections (I know I am just rambling at this point and super off topic, but I just like talking about stuff like this and my thought process lol).

Do you think when Gia said “trust me, the right person is in the right seat” about Gwen in response to all the 1012 backlash she might’ve been referring to the same thing Jesse was with “trust the process” ? Like something that’s been in the works for several months that they’re both aware of?
That’s a good callout. I completely forgot about her saying that. I’m not sure if the two have any correlation only because I don’t think Gia would know about anything coming down the pipeline that far in advance, but who knows. We’ll have to wait and see.

after the events of tdwt there was a massive drama in the total drama community following a callout post courtney made for harold outing him as a babyfur and toonophile. two years later harold comes out as nonbinary and starts making breakcore and his breakout album is about the callout post and how courtney eventually got exposed for trying to mail a bomb to gwen and disappeared off of the internet. this is why harold wasn't in tdas because the drama was still ongoing at that point

17) Ay oc otps?
A) Yes!! Yes absolutely and certainly!! Starla and Lupine are the og qpr couple, Jeremy/Jonny/Nayuta/Kazzie serves the slay, Andrew/Lural makes me go coo coo bananas and Roy/Evan is just. <3. I care them.
18) Any oc crackships?
A) Yeah Michel × The Oncler 2022
28) My most dangerous oc?
A) I mean... All of them are pretty strong? I mean I suppose Gwen, because she's like... The God character, but she isn't really story-signifigant. So Im gonna say in terms of what they are willing to do. My most dangerous oc is Michel, not because of power levels but because hes the most ruthless and will do anything and everything in his power to get what he wants.
31) Oc tumblr blog?
A) Jeremy would have a pink themed blog and be named something like "Sugarsweet-blog". He'd post pictures of flowers and dogs and reblog cute posts and she would also be intrenched in the most foul, vile discourse imaginable. Once a week he'd write a passive aggressive callout post with fake screenshots and she would just lie constantly. And then right after he'd go back to posting #inspo and #flowr pics.
