INSCRYPTOBER 2024 is here! the annual art/writing-based inscryption event for the fandom to get creative and share cool art and writing for the spooky season!

as usual, we have one theme per week, and thanks to the way october is structured this year, we have five whole weeks of themes! and of course, there's no lower limit on participation: i’ll likely be doing one or two art pieces a week, and you all can choose to participate as much or as little as you’d like depending on your own schedules and creative stamina! this event is for fun, not stress ^^

thanks to the scrybruary and more discord server for helping me nail down the themes this year! if you'd like to join the server you can do so right here, it's a chill spot for sharing art and fandom discussion; though of course you don't have to join to partake in this event!

INSCRYPTOBER 2024

Week 1: Oct 1-5

Transformation

Between the changes undergone by the Disk’s characters to suit each takeover and the manner in which Inscryption itself has altered those unfortunate enough to encounter it, this first theme has quite a few spooky avenues to take! Let your canvas be bathed in the light of the full moon however you see fit…

Week 2: Oct 6-12

Elements

Blood and bone, energy and mox…the world of Inscryption has an unconventional array of core elements that make up its cards and residents! And considering that deep beneath the surface, each of those elements are mere lines of code and digital data…it’s entirely up to you how deeply you’d like to explore those elements.

Week 3: Oct 13-19

Out of Bounds

Inscryption’s disk has many characters, sequences, and secrets that were never meant to be seen…or were simply never completed. This is the week to poke around those dark corners and catalogue whatever horrors and oddities make themselves known.

Week 4: Oct 20-26

Transcendence

Named for the grand design of the Scrybe of Technology, but it could refer to any of the Scrybe’s varying ideal forms (or lack thereof) for the game of Inscryption. And, of course, it would be remiss to mention the possibility of transcending the digital realm itself.

Week 5: Oct 27-31

Masquerade

As always, Inscryptober’s final week is themed for the season! This is the week to dress Inscryption’s characters in spooky regalia and eerie accessories…or merely to make use of the game’s existing ties to elaborate masks and sinister guises!

Preferred Roleplay Type: Everything. Give me everything. I like crack and sniping at each other but I equally love whump, romance, and just everything. And plotted events are fun, too.

Pet Peeves/Dealbreakers: I had about three paragraphs here but the tl;dr is don't be weird about villains. Please don't be weird. It's so uncomfortable. It puts me off from writing villains. I will put them all away and hide them forever because people get so weird about them. I just wanna do bad things and have complex feelings. And you know, not be told really weird stuff.

Best Time to Write: It's evening but hey, sometimes I wake up early and you'll see me on. So don't set a clock around me if you're trying to catch me.

Are you like your muse?: Too many muses to think about here and if I'm like them. I can be very nice and sweet but then I go to rabid, screaming Jersey accent in five seconds. Just ask my fiancé. So uh no, not so far. I guess I'll have to run a poll on which character I'm most like at some point. But if we franken character a bit from everyone, I'd say yes. Also if only I was able to be that good of a DM like Leshy. Without the camera thing, booooo you don't make friends that way.

something im starting this year is a very self-indulgent, "my year in review" thing where i list 7 video games i enjoyed this year + 7 movies from this year that i liked because as time goes on i feel like i'm getting worse and worse at determining what i did and when i did them so this is basically just a place for me to journal the things i enjoyed this year for future reference.

all the movies are 2022 releases but since i'm hardly ever on top of current video game releases. my games list is gonna be all over the place. im mixing them up. feel free to read if you want yippee it's meant for me but since its being posted publicly ill write em all up as little recommendations. going in no particular order other than alphabetical and alternating between a movie and a video game i liked this year. also why 7 of each ? because 7 is my favorite number fuck you

Inscryption (2021)

-i fucking suck at this game, i still have not beaten the trapper and as i understand theres like 2 whole other parts of the game to go or something??? so no i have not beaten it yet. but i have also sunk an unholy amount of time TRYING to beat it and i didn't get sick of it. it's a very dark but very entertaining card game and it has a free demo. even if you don't like card builder games i think you should try. it has a very unique atmosphere and premise

Bullet Train

-yes i liked the cringe brad pitt action movie. fun fact this was actually specifically tailor-made for me in a factory! it has a large cast of assholes trying to kill each other and it's funny and wacky and i love the directing. that sounds so fucking nerdy to say but i want to be a film director so im gonna say it. the directing of the action sequences especially was really impressive to me because there's only so much space/movement your camera can (believably) achieve when filming in a small, rectangular, ever-moving box like a train and i think mr david leitch did it very well. also tangerine and lemon funniest characters in an action comedy ever

Milk Inside a Bag of Milk Inside a Bag of Milk (2020)

-i kind of don't want to say much about this on the off chance someone reads this and also decides to play a game on this list but. listen. play it. it's like a dollar. it's very short, it's about a girl dealing with mental illness, and that's all i'll say about it.

Glass Onion

-mr benoit blanc u are so fruity. but ohg this was fun. it was fun! and it was especially more fun to rewatch it and see all that i missed and the small moments that they weren't really trying to hide from you. i enjoy the concept of being gaslit by a movie. also janelle monae is always so fun to see act

Paradise Killer (2020)

-honestly, there is so much i hate about this game. the sprites are awkward. the voice acting is bad. the platforming is abysmal. yet it's still here because i think its world is genuinely insane and unique and it knows the exact type of vibe its going for with all these terrible people in a vaporwave reality and it achieves it and also its a murder mystery and i like those. give it a try

Pathologic Classic HD (2015)

-yea this one is kinda cheating. i started it last year and got like 2 hours into it and gave up and then did a bunch of other things but i finally figured out how to get my controller hooked up to my laptop this year and i played it. 100%'d it. its proudly displayed on my steam profile.

-ummm. so. puss in boots??? that shit slapped????????? it had NO reason to be that good. like obviously the animation has been spiderverse'd which SLAPS but the they put their whole puss(y) into this movie and they didn't have to. it's good. all the characters were SO fun, literally all of them. i love the stupid little dog. he is my scrimblo. go check it out if you haven't it is NOT the soulless cash grab i thought it would be

Slime Rancher (2017)

-so like, conceptually, this game is weird as fuck. a first person shooter where you suck up little jellies and feed them and harvest their poop. its insane. its also very relaxing but also very ...management-y, like the way stardew valley is where its technically very relaxing but you are doing SO much to maximize ur profit for the day. i love that shit. look at those things. theyre adorable

-ok so i don't actually get scared that often BUT here is a mike secret. ocean shit SCARES me i do not like anything set under the ocean and the fact that this game takes place underwater freaks me the fuck out. i dropped my 3 hour save file to switch to little baby for bitches mode after 3 hours not because the monsters themselves are scary but because emotionally i cannot handle monsters on top of a deep sea setting. also the story was really good you should play it

HC A: REALISTIC

Briefly mentioned this in Augmented Reality and then never touched up on it again, but she and Carla have met! Since it’s implied Carla worked at Gamefuna (while working for Lionel), and Kaycee canonically works there, I’d like to imagine they’ve met :-) Nothing too important, but it was enough for Kaycee to occupy some space in Carla’s brain. Take that as you will. This was pre-Inscryption though, they rarely bumped into each other when Kaycee started working on Inscryption bug fixing at home.

HC B: UNREALISTIC/JOKE

Definitely references oldass memes and shit. Walks into the office like “Lmao gnarly, dudes” and nearly gets pummelled for it. Hence why her tombstone’s dated so far back. I cant see her being so fucking old im sorry, not with how Luke’s talk w/ Ms. Hobbes went.

HC C: UPSETTING

Following up on the last one, I place her death somewhere shortly after Lionel’s death. Secrets of Legendaria canonically existed by the time she died. It’s a fairly recent thing. What makes it sad is that it would have been a short enough time that, when Luke picked up the game, Leshy still had hope that it was his favourite challenger behind the screen. Being Inscrybed proved him wrong.

HC D: IGNORING CANON

Part 3 of my character references for my Inscryption D&D AU (drawn by the talented @macaronipup), featuring Poe, the warforged tinkerer/fighter. More info under the cut.

- Was created by a disappeared, advanced civilization, but he'd been lying deactivated and gathering rust in the ruins of one of their cities for the past couple thousand years. By the time he booted up again, his memory banks had corrupted completely and he was left a blank slate, forced to relearn nearly everything from the ground up.

- Was found, repaired, and taken in by the Dredger, Melter, and Inspector (humans with cybernetic implants or prostheses in this AU), who also gave him his name, derived from the only semi-legible series of foreign symbols stamped on his rusted armor, which sort of looked like “P-0-3.”

- The Dredger, Melter, and Inspector were killed in a raid on their village about 10 years before the main story starts. Poe himself was captured and sold for an obscene amount of money the next continent over, treated like an object and forced to work for his new master in the smithy day in and day out.

- Enchanted shackles around his wrists and ankles are engraved with powerful spells, which cause him excruciating pain every time they get activated (Poe has a profound distrust of magic in part because of this). They are unable to be removed by normal means because of how heavily enchanted they are; Magnificus would need access to his library to break them.

- Body is made of a strange type of living, self-repairing metal alloy. Healing spells actually work on him, which freaks him and everyone else out. He also - somehow - has a soul, unlike most repurposed forged, who are mindless, empty husks that can be programmed to carry out basic tasks.

- Can mimic any voice he hears perfectly. Can also project other images on his screen when he wants to.

- Does have clothing and a cloak Grimora made for him for when they need to pass through settlements without being noticed, but he doesn't like wearing them. But he likes pretending to be the rest of the party's mindless servant even less, so he reluctantly puts up with it.

- Carries all his tinkering tools and blacksmithing materials with him, and often drops into smithies in the towns they pass through to get some inventing done.  He makes little bots of his own for extra support in battle, and also explosives, bombs, acid, and other chemical compounds.

- Fights predominantly with his blacksmithing hammers, and is not averse to throwing them directly at someone's cranium. Like this. :V

- Has the best aim of anyone in the group, and is lethal with a crossbow, gun, or anything else he can point and shoot.

- A resourceful and creative fighter, but not in any way elegant or graceful. Values function over form, and focuses on just causing as much damage as he can ASAP. It doesn't have to be pretty or poetic, it just needs to work.

- Just as dramatic as everyone else, though, even if he may show it in different ways, mostly through cutting sarcasm and dry insults.

Second Death

Inspired by @sleepless-in-starbucks fic Lucky Jumbo, available on both tumblr and ao3! Oizys, this one's for you! /d

Warnings: Character Death (Non-permanent, minecraft kind, but still traumatizing for the character it happens to), Panic Attacks, Hurt/Comfort, Detailed Description of a Panic Attack, very brief mentions of blood and teeth, very brief references to previous trauma.

Summary:

"Lucky" Luke Carder has Absolutely Not been falling in love with one Mr. Mumbo Jumbo ever since his dying by Amanda's too-capable hands.

Now let's see if him falling quite literally, and backwards off a building instead of into feelings, will be what it takes for him to admit that he's wrong! Whoohoo! Absolutely no way this can go wrong.

One moment he was standing way too close to the edge of Mumbo’s armchair mountain for comfort, and the next moment he was feeling his stomach reach his throat.

The wind was spiraling around him, whipping his cheeks and face, and jerking his shirt up in wild fashion as he tried to somehow slow down, to stop before he hit the floor, because to hit it was to die again and he didn't want to die, he didn't want to die the first time but especially not now that he’d met Mumbo.

Tears got torn off of his face as soon as they formed. God, he hadn’t even managed to tell him how he feels, much less kiss him yet. He didn’t want to die again, not like this, not like th-

SPLAT

-is! gasp. Jerking up, his hands automatically went up to grasp his hair, pulling on it tightly as he screamed.

He bunched up into a tight ball on the soft fabric he was sitting on -was he in his bed?- crying as he tried to get his breathing under control, spiraling thoughts from before the- from before he was wherever he was now crowded his mind, not stopping even as he distantly heard a firework go off somewhere to his right.

He was dying wasn't he? He couldn't think, and everything was spinning, and he couldn't breathe, and it was too loud and too quiet and he couldn't think except about the wind and the glass and the blood and the gun and dear lord he didn't want to die-

“You… …n’t die, Luke. …uke, can… …hear me? You… …dead! You’re a… …ve! Luke, Lu… I’m ri… …breath with… …ease? Jus… …th… …eath, yo… …onna be… …ay!”

He could faintly hear a voice -is that Mumbo?- through the thick fog surrounding his senses, making out a few words at a time as his heart rate continued pounding in his ears and in his skull -remember the blood from then? your heart was pumping this fast too-. He felt his hand get gently brought away from his hair -his scalp hurt? when did that happen?- to rest against someone’s chest.

“In… …out.” The voice, Mumbo’s voice came again, a bit clearer this time. He tried to follow the breathing, choking on sobs and breaths but gradually slowing down all the same. “In… …and out. Good… …ob. Good job… …uke. You’re doing really well! I’ve got you, I’ve got you…”

This went on for what could’ve been centuries as far as Luke could tell. In and out, Mumbo’s voice muttering assurances along the way as his heart rate gradually went back to a healthier beat.

The spots cleared from his vision and he abruptly slumped against Mumbo’s chest, dead tired as the adrenaline finally cleared out of his system.

He hummed as he heard Mumbo start to panic over him, too tired to do much more than snuggle closer to his chest. Dear god, that was tiring. He hadn’t had a panic attack since way before he got here.

…Well…

…Maybe not way before, but definitely multiple weeks, if not months. Inscryption had been having its way with him right before this, after all. -the blood, and the teeth, and the- dear lord he didn’t want to think about any of that right now-

Overall, he definitely hadn’t had a panic attack that bad in probably years, and it was taking its toll on him now.

When Mumbo tried to get him to drink something, he just nudged it away weakly before curling even tighter into Mumbo’s comforting hold, letting himself fall asleep because god was he tired, and he knew that Mumbo was safe, and that was all that mattered to him at that point.

Everything else could be figured out with a little rest. Or maybe the longest, most comfy nap of his life. He’d take either one.

Tell me about your oc Giger in your recent D&D sketch post! what's the eating of the mushrooms (although I can't blame him) or the mushrooms in general? Why red hair, any significance?

He's not really a character in relation to DnD but a fan OC for the game Inscryption!

The red hair doesn't have much meaning except that I think it fits him. Also he's got not much concern about personal safety and would very much try to eat amanitas.

As for the mushrooms in general, it a joking reference in relation to an in game character called the mycologists!

The first of 4 character references for my Inscryption D&D AU (done by @macaronipup​ )! This is Grimora as a human cleric (Death Domain; her patron deity is the Bone Lord). Misc. info under the cut.

- Used to be a wild and well-traveled adventurer in her youth, but now spends her days recording the stories of the dying who come through her church for their last rites, and also helping law enforcement solve mysteries by casting Speak with Dead on recently deceased corpses.

- Kaycee Hobbes is her closest liaison with law enforcement, and the two are good friends.

- Cutlass belonged to Royal, whose ship she sailed on for a number of years back in her adventuring days. His ghost haunts her church, unwilling to move onto the afterlife without his old friend.

- Sawyer is a man she saved from the brink of death from a dog attack and decided to become an acolyte of the Bone Lord out of gratitude. She leaves her church in his care once she sets out on her newest quest.

- Deceptively strong. She has meat on her bones, and isn't afraid to use it, despite being in her mid-60s.

- Dramatic. Really loves acting and relishes the chance to put on a show, whether it be tricking ruffians or getting out of trouble with law enforcement.

- Does not leap into conflict and prefers a more diplomatic approach whenever possible. Can across as somewhat disingenuous, because to keep the peace, she will not always say what is on her mind. Despite this, she's the group's spokesperson, because it's not like the boys can be trusted with diplomacy. :p

- If push comes to shove, though, she is downright scary in a fight. If she actually pulls out her cutlass, she won't hold back, and focuses on ending the fight ASAP. With the appropriate dramatic flair, of course.

- Only member of the party that can actually cook decent food. Loves her cuppas.
