The more I think about it the more I’d LOVE to see a Pokemon region based on Aotearoa and Australia… definitely more so Aotearoa obviously but I don’t think Aotearoa is big/environmentally diverse enough to fill out a regional dex, and including Aus just makes sense

Regional birds would be easy - we have SO many different species of birds here lmao

Anyways some ideas for what Pokemon could be inspired by Aotearoa culture/wildlife:

Regional form of Gyarados inspired by Taniwha (Taniwha can take on many different forms but the most commonly recorded one is sea serpent so it works perfectly)

A split evolution for a chick that involves into either Takahē or Pūkeko (Water/Grass and Water/Flying respectively)

Grass/Ground bird based on Kākāpō. Pretty self-explanatory

Either grass/ground or pure ground Kiwi. This one can be mythical but I’d only want one endangered native bird to be a mythical so make it the most famous one. Plus it looks like shaymin if it was brown and had a loooong schnoz

Poison/Ground or Poison/Normal Possum. Possums are the biggest pests here so poison it is

Dragon type Tuatara. Again, self-explanatory. I think it works best as a mono-type but I could see Rock, Grass, or Ground as a secondary typing. Dragon/Rocks works best especially cause it could be a fossil Pokemon (although they still exist today so…)

Moa legendary. Easy. The type is tricky though cause it could be anything… Grass and Ground are very easy types to give a flightless bird but Idk if fits. “Normal” sounds too boring for it, and it’s not beastly enough to be dark or dragon… Psychic might work? I could see a Normal/Psychic Moa Legendary…

Regional form of Wooloo. Dunno how different it would be but it would work

Ground type Wallaby that evolves into a Ground/Fighting Kangaroo. They are different species irl but this is Pokemon. Anything can happen.

Pekapeka (native short-tailed bats) would be like. Similar to Noibat in size and typing but it would be different since it won’t be able to evolve

Regional variant of Spheal that’s just a fur seal. Funny little guys… Might be Water/Rock instead of Water/Ice but you know

Water/flying Albatross. Another easy one.

Water/Fairy Little blue penguin (Lily’s suggestion)

Water/Rock Paua… basically it’d just be shellder kinda?

A giant sting ray legendary to represent the north island pulled up by Māui in the legend… basically Mantine meets Kyogre

Bug/Electric glow worm. Could also be Bug/Rock since they live in caves?

Incorporating the story of Mahuika and her firey fingernails would be REALLY cool, but idk how it could become a pokemon… unless it became a seed that grows into a burning tree? Since in the legend Māui uses dry wood that Mahuika threw fire at to make fire. It would end up being Fire/Grass which would be really cool

As for like. Starters? Water type yellow-eyed penguin, Grass type bird that is not Kākāpō (as that would be single-stage), and fire type wētā maybe? It would be Fire/Bug which would make it VERY strong, especially if the rival is competitive instead of nice and picks the starter that your starter is weak to, but it would make it interesting. Perhaps the grass type could actually be Grass/Flying? Then Penguin could be Water/Rock? It would make for some fucked up type interactions but there you go

Silver's basically a physical carbon copy of his biodad, so what did he get from her? like, I understand why the two of them kind of have to stay as these super vague and mysterious figures -- the whole point of them is that their story ended 400+ years ago and they're not really relevant anymore (and. well. the more that gets explained about them, the less that can just kinda be handwaved as "oh the politics were Very Messy") (we can sit here and theorize all day but let us acknowledge that, ultimately, canon gave us almost nothing about them post-Meleanor and we'd just be making things up). I do still wonder about her though! RIP Lea, we never knew you and we probably never will.
