Steve could think of a lot of things to call Billy Hargrove. Bully. Asshole. Arrogant. Gross. Unfortunately, the only thing Steve was allowed to call him was —
“Captain.”
Delivered through gritted teeth, mostly, or yelled across the court. Said in a drawl with an eye roll for added effect.
It wasn’t fucking fair. Billy had been a year under Steve in high school. And yet he’d managed to get to uni first, so now Steve was stuck calling Billy what Billy used to call him.
“Ass in gear, Harrington!”
At least some things never changed.
Billy was smart, apparently. Like — really smart. He’d bounced out of high school and immediately fucked off to uni, full ride and everything. Steve had to take two whole years to get himself in order, and even then his parents were paying for the degree. Steve was a whole year older than Billy and a whole year behind.
It fucking sucked.
Especially because no one here knew Billy in high school. It was just Steve who remembered what he used to be like. He hadn’t changed that much, but it was clear leaving Hawkins had a huge effect on the guy. Here in California, he was so much less angry.
He still yelled at the team plenty, but more to motivate than to abuse. Was still rough, but out of play, not violence. Still gross. Still hot. Still charmed the pants off any girl he wanted, still gave Steve that horrid smirk any time Billy got one up on him.
And after three years, Steve wasn’t really frustrated about Billy being a grade up, being better. Steve knew Billy would end up captain for his senior year. Now what Steve was frustrated about was how Billy had suddenly gotten worse. And no one else seemed to notice.
Maybe he just picked on Steve in particular. But it fucking sucked. The rest of the team worshipped Captain Hargrove, and Billy hated Steve.
Basketball was the only thing Steve knew he was good at. He wanted to be captain next year. So badly. But there was no way in hell Billy would hand the reigns to him, and he’d made that increasingly clear in the past few months.
Graduation was fast approaching. Finals were screwing everyone. Steve was high strung with the stress of it all, and Billy’s bullshit wasn’t helping.
Knocking him down just to pick him up and do it all over again. Passing to Steve just to yell at him for a ‘bad play’. Putting Steve on the opposite team and guarding him on purpose.
Steve was pissed off and he’d had enough.
“Alright, Captain,” he’d hissed the moment the gym doors had closed behind Billy, shoving the stockier boy up against the wall by the water fountain. “You really gonna hold a high school grudge all the way until graduation or what?”
Billy, asshole that he was, just grinned at him. “Why so touchy, Harrington? If this is about that girl at the party last well, it’s not your fault she wanted a younger guy.” He wiggled his brows.
“No — what?” Steve grimaced. Billy never stopped being gross. “Fuck off, dude. You know what I’m talking about. Everyone knows you target me like hell.”
Billy glanced away, all shifty, but when he looked back the grin was plastered into place. “Dunno what you’re talking about, Harrington. Look, I know you’re used to the princess treatment — ”
“Don’t give me that,” Steve snapped, pushing Billy’s shoulder, shoved harshly into the wall again, feeling only a tiny bit bad when Billy winced. “You treat me like shit. I know you wouldn’t give it to me to save your life but let’s face it your next best option is fucking Daniel and he’s not exactly a team player.”
Billy squinted at him. “You think next best is Daniel? Shit, maybe I should reconsider this whole thing.”
Steve gaped a little. “What whole — you weren’t gonna give it to him?”
“No, asshole,” Billy drawled, like Steve was slow. “I was gonna give it to you, but fuckin Daniel is such a shit take that maybe I gotta rethink my plan, you get what I’m sayin? Can’t have you picking shit new players.”
Steve stared at him.
Tried to find the lie, the joke, the taunt in Billy’s blazing eyes but Billy wasn’t a liar, never had been, not like Steve was.
Billy’s lips twitched. “The fuck you lookin at?”
Steve blinked, and stumbled back from Billy, releasing him. “You were gonna make me captain?”
“Well shit, not yet,” Billy replied. Asshole. “Still got another month left in me.”
“Jesus Christ, you know what I mean. Why were you being such a dick, then, Hargrove?”
Billy’s eyebrows climbed. “Try that again, Harrington.”
Steve narrowed his eyes at Billy, who just looked back at him expectantly.
Gritting his teeth, Steve replied in his flattest tone, “Why were you being such a dick, Captain.”
A flash of pearly whites for his trouble, and a pat to the shoulder. “Couldn’t let you have my team before I knew you could handle it, now could I?”
“So what, all of this was just some sort of fucked up test?”
“Sure, if it helps you sleep at night.”
“You’re — I hate you.”
“No you don’t.” Billy grinned at him again. Wolfish, just like it had been in high school, ready to close around Steve’s throat. “You want me to like you so bad.”
“Yeah because I want to be Captain, you ass—”
Those teeth that were designed to destroy Steve’s windpipe were suddenly digging into Steve’s bottom lip, which made it rather difficult to speak. It also fucking hurt. And was incredibly surprising. So if Steve made a completely undignified yelping sort of sound, it had nothing to do with Billy kissing him and everything to do with shock and pain.
Kissing back wasn’t quite so easily explained.
Honestly, Steve didn’t know why he did it. Billy really did piss him off. Maybe it was just the thrill of knowing it wasn’t all for nothing, the high of knowing he’d be captain next year. Maybe it was knowing Billy approved of him — not that Steve gave a shit about that. Maybe it was just that Billy was hot and Steve hadn’t slept with that girl at last week’s party because Billy had been better. Maybe Steve had wanted him since high school and just buried it under a thick layer of what an ass.
And truly, what an ass, as Billy tried to make Steve’s mouth bleed or something with how agressive he was being, and god finally getting to sink his fingers into the dense meat of Billy was beyond satisfying. There was something to be said for his gym rat behavior, since Steve’s hands could wrap and squeeze and dig into Billy’s biceps and ass and thighs like he could him right open.
Steve had just wrapped his hand up in Billy’s stupid hair and Billy had just dragged his tongue between Steve’s teeth when a door slammed somewhere in the gym.
Steve startled and jerked away, suddenly incredibly aware of their easily accessible location, not to mention the burning feeling in his face, the sting of his bitten mouth, the fingers that gone numb from wrapping Billy’s hair too tight around them. The aching straining tightening coiling way too fucking obvious in his basketball shorts, the matching mouthwatering visual in Billy’s and goddamn, Steve hated the idea of getting on his knees for someone like Billy Hargrove but he might just be able to do it for Billy Hargrove himself.
Billy was grinning again. Panting between his teeth.
“Well? Captain.”
And — that made Steve feel.
Something.
“Shut up,” Steve managed. Not sure what else to say.
Billy’s grin cracked impossibly wider. “What, you want me to tell you to make me? Cause even I’m not that cliche, Harrington, and – ”
And Jesus Christ, Steve just wanted him to stop fucking talking, so he grabbed him by the face and crushed their mouths back together. The quickest way to shut Billy Hargrove up, as it turned out, was to stick one’s tongue down his throat.
Their teeth clicked together, which was painful, as most things with Billy were. Billy hissed and shoved back a little, and they stumbled grasping and yanking into the shower room.
Steve gave a breathless sort of laugh when they finally bumped to a stop, Billy shoved up against him and his back to a wall. Billy might as well have been feral, prowling up on Steve as he was, clawing his shirt off and gnawing on him, cornering and hunting him.
“Like to — fuck — play with your food, Captain?”
Billy groaned in response, shoving Steve harder against the wall, making him wince as his now-bare shoulders scraped against the shitty paint. “Forgot how to mouth off, Harrington?”
Steve laughed again, that same hysterical breathless definitely-not-a-giggle kind of laugh. “Gonna fuck some respect into me or what?”
“Jesus Christ, Harrington,” Billy replied, a low grating syrupy quality to his voice that went straight through Steve’s bloodstream like a hit. “If telling you you’re gonna be captain is all it took, I shoulda told you sooner.”
Steve huffed a little. “Yeah, right.”
“No, serious.” Billy pushed his shoulder again. Rough. Playful. “Already had it in my head it was gonna be you. Knew it months ago. Had to put on a good show, you know, really make sure so no one could say I was just playin old high school favorites. And maybe I liked pushin you around a little. But I’m serious. It’s been you, Harrington.”
And that made something uncomfortably warm swirl in Steve’s chest. Warmth wasn’t a feeling Steve wanted to associate with Billy Hargrove. Burning heat was good, scalding, melting flesh off bone. But something warm, cozy, blanket around his shoulders coffee in the rain — Steve couldn’t take that.
“Yeah, right,” he said again, quieter this time. Not defiant, just soft. Acceptance. Having Billy’s gorgeous blue eyes boring into his own made it hard to disagree. “Right.”
Billy must have felt it too, then — this warm curling thing between them — because he plastered the sharp grin back on, slicing through whatever fragile just slipped through the cracks. “Where were we?”
A slow smile crept back across Steve’s mouth in return.
“Wherever you want, Captain.”

The gang as camp monitors bc I said so.
Sodapop as a camp monitor is great with kids of all ages. He bonds with them and he's spontaneous he has great bits that he does. He keeps the kids entertained. They're not all obedient but he doesn't have a hard time dealing with his group because everyone loves him so much. Sodapop is the camp monitor every kid dreams of, but not every boss' dream employee because he slacks, he doesn't follow all the safety rules and stuff like that. He was also a boy scout because Mr. Curtis was a guide. Darry was one but Pony wasn't and Steve was one too.
Darry is the monitor who's been there too long. He's stricter but he plays during the games and everyone wants him on their team. He could be a lifeguard, too. He can be funny but he's not goofy, his type is mostly "here are the rules, don't do anything dumb" and when you do something dumb he's like "told ya". He can get a little bit full of himself when he has disobedient kids and he doesn't make it better because that man is not above starting beef with a 12 yo.
Ponyboy is too young to be a camp monitor, but he's like an intern, an assitant. He's always in his notebook but it's great because he gives reports at the end of the day to parents. He's the schedul keeped and he makes sure things are at their place when they need to be. He also brings the lunches. He hangs out with the older kids or with the monitors he looks up to. He's a great story teller so he does that to kill time.
Steve is jaded. He's always paired with Soda (because he asks to be) and his attitude towards the kids is mostly " you don't bother me, I don't bother you." He tells the group to shut up if they aren't listening to Soda and he's never at the end of the line when they're walking because he wants to talk with Soda. He loves playing but also winning so he's very competitive, even against the younger kids. Got reprimanded a few times for telling kids "their mom shoulda swallowed them" but the camp desperately needs monitors so they won't fire him.
Johnny doesn't get taken seriously. He's quiet, kind of a follower. He's there so they can get the right adult/kid ratio. He doesn't really play, he looks at the group. He does head counts every time and is very strict about it. He'll go to the kids who's in their own corners or who seem down and he'll stay with them and talk to them. He prefers the younger kids because tbh he's scared of teens.
Two-Bit is always drunk/hungover but he makes it work. He was forbidden from bringing a water bottle because there was never water inside. He doesn't follow safety rules, he tells the kids "as long as you don't die" and hell, he even says he's got a "10% loss allowance" and he means it. He's always picking up the teachers or the older teens and he's always starting up a game of volleyball in the pool. That and fights. He doesn't follow his schedule all the time, if the kids wanna play tag instead of kayak he'll let them. He gets three hours of sleep each night and he keeps candy and snacks on him so he can eat during the day. Surprisingly, the kids love him (because he's funny and laid back)
Dally is officially the worst camp monitor. He hates little kids and barely hides it, so he only gets the older teens. He keeps acting like he's the boss of everyone and like he knows everything there is to be about the camping ground because he's been there two summers. He's EXTREMELY competitive and will always start shit like "my group's better than yours". He will actively stop a game to argue with a kid. He tells the kids everyone's real names. He calls the kids "little shits". He gets offended if anyone critics him in the slightest and he only plays violent games. If Two-Bit didn't mean his "10% loss allowance", Dally doesn't mean it because for a reason or another he'll jump in the water to get out a kid if they'd fallen in. He's got favorites and he lets it be known.
If they have to have camp names, Soda's would be Mickey Mouse, Darry's is Superman, Pony's Paul Newman or Pip, Steve is Elvis or Turbo or Donald Duck, Johnny is Billy the Kid, Fido or Pluto, Two-Bit is Maui or Goofy and Dally is Zeus or Whiskey

New York, 12:03 PM
It was midday when she woke up from a sleepless night. Her hair was strewn from the tossing and turning, her room swamped with clothes she swears she folded and put away, and her equipment still sitting on her bedside table - they had dried blood on them. Perfect. New York, as usual, was honking her horns, shouting down the street, and yapping about the danger of unlicensed heroes - glad she wasn't dealing with that anymore.
Y/n eventually gets up from bed and heads straight to her stereo player - a gift she was given by an old friend. She sticks her CD in and presses play. She began to pick up her room so she could at least see the floor she walked on.
The music helped set the mood - it was important for her. She folded the shirts, cleaned and put away her weapons and placed them in a secure little box that hid deep in her closet. Grabbing her towels, she later went to shower, the cold streams of water falling onto her skin to clear her of the oils and dirt that she could remove.
She wasn't doing well. She knew she wasn't. Y/n had pretty much gone radio silent when the Avengers were certainly no more, when SHIELD lost relevance, and, mostly, when some of her closest friends were lost in war with some purple space tyrant. All that, coupled with what the DSM-5 would call a psychological conspiracy, and she was set to go.
Once she got out of the shower and changed, she ran to her kitchen to grab something to eat - all she had was a packet of oreos, instant bubble tea and leftover Chinese food in the fridge. The stereo kept playing, blaring its music in all corners of the small apartment - her neighbours would hate her - but that's besides the point. She put the leftover food on a plate and put it in the microwave. All the while, scrolling through her phone, she browsed any of the news articles to see if any really gave her a kick. Nothing interesting unless you want to know celebrity gossip, congress meetings, and other frankly meaningless topics to keep people's gaze away from the city's nearly daily repairs.
One, however, did catch her eye - 'Captain America: Only a Concept'. It was something about an exhibition dedicated to Steve Rogers. Y/n knew him well, not very personally, but respected him when she was engaged with the Avengers in select moments. As she read through, she smiled fondly, only for a moment. Steve was kind to her, knew of her situation and bared no ill of her. Yet her face soured when a certain name was mentioned.
Now, they really knew each other. "...shit." She muttered under her breath.
She didn't think so fondly of him - they respected each other as soldiers and reluctant allies - but they weren't friends. Not in the slightest. But they had each other's contact. But they're not friends. At least, she thinks that.
As she ate her food, she contemplated. She hadn't heard from him in nearly a year. Maybe more than that when she thought about it. What was so hard about just calling. Or texting. What was so difficult, why is she making this difficult? No. He's probably busy. Maybe he isn't. Why they had each other's number, heaven knows why. But...just press 'call'. No.
She put her phone on the coffee table, pacing up and down the room. 'You're over thinking this', she thought, 'it's not like you've got anyone else, right?'
Well, she didn't have anyone else. This guy was her only contact. How hard is it to--
*99c Store Cap calling...*
He was calling. Oh no. She wasn't even prepared for anything like that happening - she dusted invisible dirt off, took a breath and swiped to answer.
"...yes?" She spoke.
"...Y/n?" He inquired.
"...John?" She questioned back.
"Yeah...it's me. Haven't heard from you-"
"Why are you calling me?" She asked, accusing, "...we haven't, uh, we haven't seen each other in like..."
"A year." He completed. "Yeah, uh...I've been going through a rough patch, right now. And yourself?"
And yourself? What was that supposed to mean? She stared at her living room, the food on the plate still, peering at the crack in her wall, and the pile of clothes still needing to be folded.
"I'm great." She lied.
"That's good. Hey, listen. Since we haven't exactly spoken in a long while, I was thinking, maybe we could...meet up?" He offered. In all fairness, actually talking to someone could do her some good. She thought for a moment.
"I, uh..." She replied, "I can't...I'm kind of busy." She lied again. She heard the audible disappointed sigh.
"Uh, yeah. That's okay. Just wondered. Let me know when you're free. I'll talk to you soon." He spoke, she couldn't see him, but a slight smile was on his face.
"M'kay...bye." Y/n hung up. 'How could I be so...downtrodden?' She thought, throwing her head in her hands like she was incapable of speaking. Maybe the feeling will blow over. Maybe.

22:47 PM
She was still thinking about the conversation from this afternoon. His words rattling in her brain like she longed for conversation. Supposing she did go meet with him again, what would come out of it? What would she gain? What would he gain? Everyone had their reasons, and she had none? Impossible.
Y/n laid in her bed, staring at the untouched message board of John. She typed, but then deleted it. Just play it cool, she thought. Not too cool, nonchalant. But still...care?
Soon, she just...got herself together and typed.
Tumblr media
"Well...that was easy." She whispered to herself. She set her phone down and flipped over. Hopefully getting back in contact was worth it.

Eagle Espresso, 9:20 AM
Y/n was often punctual - that was to an absolute fault. No matter the occasion, wedding, funeral, just a chat, or a life-changing conversation, she was always early. Never late. Never on time. That was how she conducted herself, and that didn't change. At least something was a constant - she was meeting someone she hadn't spoken to in over a year and having doubts of whether or not the meet up is truly serious.
She turned the corner on 4th Street to the coffee shop. It was her favourite place to go, besides the Natural History Museum and the library. It was quiet, calm and there was nothing major ever going on. Eagle Espresso, for lack of better explanation, sort of just showed up near her street - it was still in its infancy, only being around for about three years. Yet she went any time she got a chance to.
She found a booth, right by a window that faced the street. It wasn't picturesque, but it was her spot. Always. She pulled out her phone, reading the time: 9:30 AM.

John was on the bus from his place. The cart rattling about from left to right, crowded to its brim with businessmen, school kids, the regular joes, and himself. He was lost in his own head, also. He thought about what exactly led him up to this point. For all he knows, she could be leading him into a trap, why else did she take long to respond? But, uncharacteristically, he gave her the benefit of good conscience.
He felt his phone buzz as the bus halted at the stop, he got off in the crowds and pulled out his phone once safely on the next bus over.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He couldn't help but smile a little at her texts. But his smile would falter slightly when seeing the coffee shop just a few buildings down from his final stop.
He walked with a fairly confident stride, but he had an air of clueless purpose. 'Why did I agree to this?' He thought to himself, the stride still greatly moving. He didn't have time to think for a moment, since in a matter of seconds, he was at the entrance. He took a breath, stepped inside and looked for Y/n - unfortunately, he was having second thoughts.
⋆⭒˚。⋆🛡️⋆⭒˚。⋆🛡️⋆⭒˚。⋆🛡️⋆⭒˚。⋆
She sat back in the booth chair. not really paying much mind to her surroundings, but was sucked back in when she saw someone walk in. He was dressed in a blue zip-up sweater, washed out jeans, work boots and dog tags dangling at his neck.
It was John. At least, she thinks it is. He had a beard, he was clean-shaven since she last saw him.
She stood up, and called out, "...Walker."
Once that name slipped from her lips, they just stared at each other for a moment. Taking each other in. Heavens it had been a long time coming.
"...L/n." He called back, a relieved smile appearing on his face. "...Been a while, huh?"
"Yeah, sure has." She spoke, gesturing for him to sit down with her. He sat in the booth chair across from her, trying to get comfortable. He noticed her own subtle attire - a plain white t-shirt, jeans, sneakers and her jacket - one she always wore.
10:06 AM
It got quiet again, until Y/n decided to speak again. "I'm happy you could make it. I didn't know whether you'd get here or not..."
John shrugged, "Well, I was spending the bus ride thinking it was some ploy for a mission, or something, so I guess you're not alone in that--"
"Do you seriously think I'd reach out for that reason?" She replied, "Firstly, you reached out to me. Secondly, if it was a ploy, you wouldn't be sitting here in front of me - you would've been dragged out back." Just as she said that, one of the waitresses came by with her pad in hand.
"Hiya, what can I get ya?" She asked, sweetly.
Y/n composed herself again, ordering, "I'd like a Caramel Frappuccino, with coffee and cream, please." She then gestured to John to order.
"I'll have a Mocha, extra caffeine." He requested. As soon as the lady left, they both sighed, partially in relief. "...you are so damn lucky she didn't hear that last part."
The former spy brayed. "Whatever. Besides, it's not like I can do that anymore. I do odd jobs now - New York never sleeps. Neither does the crime." She tapped the table aimlessly. "And yourself? You said you were in a rough patch over the phone. Why's that?"
John visibly tensed, his posture fixed. "Um, yeah. Wow...yeah, rough patch..." He stumbled, but ultimately tried to keep himself as in control of himself as possible.
"Uh, let's see. Last year alone...Captain America title - no more of that. Like I said in the text, my stuff was confiscated so I have nothing," he started, and it was only going to get loose from there, "my wife, Olivia, she left me. Took my son with her. We're supposed to be going to custody talks later. How much later, I have no clue. Life has been nothing but monotonous and frankly I'm tired of it--"
He was about to fly off the handle, but the waitress came back with our drinks. We politely thanked her, then we turned back to each other. Y/n interjected.
"I...I didn't realize it got so bad. Why didn't you call sooner? I would've helped." She said, sipping her drink. "...what stopped you?"
"You were busy." He replied, "Plus you were with Bucky and Sam at the time, things just fell apart from there..."
"Bucky and Sam have nothing to do with this. I may not have understood why you were Cap at the time, but I respected you. Didn't a call matter to you?"
"Didn't a call matter to you when Lemar died in front of us both?"
She knew he was going to bring this up. Lemar was important to him, more important that Y/n sometimes realized. She didn't know him personally like John did. She took a breath.
"Don't bring this on me, John..." She spoke, "We both know what happened to Lemar was awful. What was said was awful. I can own up to that." Y/n leaned back in her booth chair, contemplating. "...why did you call me now?"
A silence hung in the air, more so from slight tension more than awkwardness. John leaned forward, placing his hands on his warm mug, "Because I've got no one." He then looked up from his mug, "Why did you answer?"
She shrugged, and replied, "Because I haven't got anyone, either."
They both sipped their drinks. "I'm sorry all of that happened to you. If you called sooner, I would've made my best efforts to help. I just want you to know that."
They stared at each other for a bit, as if studying the lines and curves of the stress of it all. They both had tough lives. Whilst they would never align in experiences, there was always something that they could agree on. Stress lines and any sort of details like that were interesting to them both - whether it was scars from previous punch-ups, marks from menial activities, or just experiencing the borderline of completely deteriorating...
John's lips pulled into a tight line. "I'm sorry. I just--"
"I get it." Y/n spoke, "...we're both a mess." They both chuckled. They then stared again, until John spoke up.
"...those odd jobs. Anything interesting in that?" He asks.
"Well, aside from a good ass kicking, nothing particularly interesting. I come home with a bloody forehead every other week." He laughed a little, it was nice to hear it. "...if you're looking for something to do with yourself whilst in your slump, I'm afraid this isn't gonna be it."
John smirked, "Please, L/n, I can handle myself. I'm not a damsel."
"No, but your record needs cleaning. I'm a lost cause, don't get mixed up in that." She advises, knowing fully well he won't listen.
"I'm not getting mixed up with a vigilante." He retorts, "I'm getting mixed up with a friend.
"Oh, so I'm your friend now?" She laughs, "Very funny." But in all this, she smiles, a genuine smile - one she hadn't given someone in a long while.
"Will you be my friend?" A brief silence descends.
"I will." She replied.
With that, they finished their coffees and talked like old school friends. Some laughing, some venting and just enjoying each other's company. It felt like they were there for a few minutes.
In reality, they were there for almost three hours.

John's House, 14:17 PM
John had later arrived home. He removed his zip-up sweater and threw it down on the couch, he kicked off his work boots into a corner and he sat in his armchair, staring out of the window of his house. The sky was still grey - but for the brief time he was out, the sun was close to blinding.
He pulled his phone out and stared at Y/n's message board. He typed.
Tumblr media
⋆⭒˚。⋆🕷️⋆⭒˚。⋆🕷️⋆⭒˚。⋆🕷️⋆⭒˚。⋆
She smiled as she read the messages. She was sitting on her couch, he feet propped up and soft music playing in the background, letting her drown out the noise of the outside.
Now they had each other. After so long, they both had peace again...

Christmas Showdown
In which you and Lando run into an ex-boyfriend while you're home for the holidays.
Warnings: talk of abusive relationship (no details though). Established relationship. Protective Lando. This could probably be better and it's pretty short buttttttt I needed to get this out of my head, so enjoy! Pairing: Lando Norris x Girlfriend!Reader Word Count: 1.8k words
Master List
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It had been several years since you spent the holidays in your small Midwestern hometown. Usually, your family flew out to London or Monaco to spend the holiday’s with you there, much preferring to leave Michigan’s several feet of snow that was typically on the ground during Christmas. This year was different thought. Your grandmother had been too ill to make the long flight so instead, you came to them. Which was fine with you, you had missed seeing friends that were home for the holidays and missed the nostalgic nights spent around the Christmas tree with your family. The one person who was not fine with it, however, was your boyfriend.
Lando Norris simply hated the cold. He hated being cold. Hated thinking about the cold. Hated the snow. Anytime the temperature dipped below 50 degrees Fahrenheit ( which also a fight you two had often was how he refused to learn the difference between Fahrenheit and Celsius while also simultaneously refusing to do the same for him.) So you knew he must really be down bad for you when he had agreed (albeit a bit sluggishly) to spend the Christmas holiday with you in your (freezing) hometown.
There was minimal complaining for the first few days you were at home, mostly because it the weather was fair enough to not be something comparable to the North Pole, but trouble arose the day of your Aunt and Uncle’s infamous Christmas party. The first sign of trouble was your brother’s insistence on a family outing to the sledding hill that was a few miles from your house. Of course Lando had packed several parkas but when he had seen the Canada Goose store in the mall the day before, he had bought the thickest, best cold rated puffer jacket he could find. Despite that and several layers of long johns and sweaters, by the time you reached the sledding hill your poor boyfriend was shivering like your grandma’s ancient chihuahua.
To his credit though, there was not one single utterance of a complaint or plea to go back to your parents house for a cup of hot chocolate then entire time. Lando happily chased your nieces and nephews around the sledding hill and even went down the hill a few times with you.
“Okay, folks!” Your dad calls out as the afternoon sun hangs low in the sky. “I think it’s time we all head home and get ready for Judy and Steve’s party tonight. I expect everyone to be at their house by 7pm sharp!” The ‘this reminder is for your benefit’ look that your dad sends you has your already wind chapped face turning even more red.
“I don’t know why you’re glaring at me! I’m always on time!” You shout, grabbing for Lando’s hand. “We’ll see you guys tonight!”
Once you get in the Range Rover that Lando had rented for the two week visit, he immediately turns the heated seats on full power and cranks up the heat.
“Do you want to swing by Starbucks and get something warm before going home?” You ask as Lando pulls out of the park and onto the snowy street. “I feel like I might need to just get you an IV of hot chocolate at this point.”
Lando gives you a sidelong glare. “I think I have icicles in my nose hairs.”
Laughter tumbles out of you, quick and light, sending a thrill of pleasure down Lando’s spine. You two had been dating for a few years now and there were still times he’d look over at you and think ‘how the fuck did I convince this girl to be my girlfriend?’. You had come into his life at a particularly challenging time and had been his rock since day one.
“Starbucks it is, my poor little snowman. There’s one up here in this strip mall. Turn left at this light and then it’s on the right.”
The parking lot, which is a shared lot with several other big box stores, is an absolute zoo and you can see the line snaking around the inside of the Starbucks before you even go in. To save some time, Lando drops you off at the front door while he goes and finds a spot for the large SUV.
The line is long when you get inside but you’re thankful to at least be out of the bitter cold. While you wait in line, you mindlessly scroll on your Instagram, which is locked down tighter than Fort Knox. Going private on all socials and not being featured heavily on Lando’s had been one of the things you two had agreed upon when things started getting serious nearly two years ago now. People who were huge Lando fans knew who you were but the casual F1 fan probably wouldn’t have been able to pick you out of a lineup.
Your casually scrolling, minding your own business, when a deep voice calling your name jolts you out of your little social media bubble.
“Jeff?” You sputter, surprised to see your college boyfriend standing in front of you in line, huge smile on his face.
Jeff had been one of the guys you and your best friends had drooled over in high school, having been nearly two years ahead of you when you were teens. You didn’t start dating him until your freshman year of college, when he was already a junior. To say the man was toxic was an understatement. In fact, now that you had a few years distance between the now and the end of the relationship, you could confidently say Jeff had been pretty abusive.
“Hey, stranger!” He says, leaning in for a hug. You go completely still, totally unprepared to be faced with the man who had caused you so much trauma in the two years you had dated. “I have’t seen you in ages, visiting your family for the holidays?”
You toss a look over your shoulder, desperately wishing for Lando to come walking in the door. “Uh, yeah. First time in a few years. I usually fly them over to London or Monaco for the holidays.”
A dark shadow passes over Jeff’s face at the mention of where you live now. “Monaco, huh? You always thought you were too good for us here, didn’t you?”
Your stomach twists painfully at the look in his eyes and you briefly consider just turning around and walking right out of the Starbucks without your drinks.
Before you can stutter out a response, a strong pair of large hands wraps around your waist as Lando drops his head onto your shoulder. “Darling. Baby. Sweetheart. Love of my life." Lando croons in your ear, not yet picking up on your body language. "I adore you but why the fuck did you have to be born in a place where the air hurts your face?”
You laugh stiffly despite yourself. “Talk to my parents about that one, love.”
Lando drops a kiss on your cheek before looking over at the other man. “Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t realize you were talking to someone.”
Across from you, Jeff had been watching this exchange between Lando and you with an increasing amount of annoyance. Who the fuck was this and why was he calling you the love of his life?
“Lando, this is Jeff.” You turn slightly, giving Lando a knowing look which he catches onto immediately. “Jeff, this is my boyfriend, Lando.”
“That’s an interesting name. Only heard that name twice before, once in Star Wars and…” Jeff’s voice drops off as he finally makes the connection. “Wait. Lando…as in Lando Norris?”
The smug grin that stretches across Lando’s face nearly has you giggling. “That’s me. And you’re Jeff, huh? I’ve heard a lot about you. None of it good.”
Lando remembered the first time you had ever opened up to him a few months into dating about how you had been in an abusive relationship in college and how much work it had taken to recover from it. He had been your first serious relationship after leaving Jeff, having left the country just to get away from him. Internally, Lando raged at the man standing in front of you two, the protective instinct in him screaming to just lay the guy out right here.
Jeff’s already ruddy face turns red with incandescent rage. You had totally forgotten he was a big Formula One fan and when you remember the fact that not only is he an F1 fan, but a huge McLaren fan, the urge to giggle hits you again. Oh, this was just too good.
“How’d you…” Jeff stutters. “How’d you manage to bag yourself a Formula 1 driver?”
The question is a pathetic attempt to rile you up and insult you but both you and Lando see that question for exactly what it is.
Lando plants another kiss on your cheek and you know he’s doing it to be an asshole. “I was actually the one who pursued her. She turned me down left and right for nearly a year, didn’t you baby?”
You nod, remembering the way Lando had come into your office at the McLaren Tech Center day after day just to make small talk at first but finally had worked up the nerve to ask you out. You were one of the newer people on the comms team back then and you hand’t wanted to jeopardize the career you had worked so hard for so you had turned him down for nearly a year, insisting that you wanted nothing more than a friendship with the driver.
“But eventually, he wore me down. He flew me to Monaco and took me out on his yacht for our first date, it was all very romantic.” It had actually been Max’s yacht, but Jeff didn’t need to know that bit.
You can see Jeff practically seething at this point, knowing that you’re doing so well and he’s still apparently stuck in your hometown.
“And how are you doing, Jeff? Still working at your dad’s law firm? How is Vance doing? And Laura?” You know it’s killing him, asking about his parents by their first name.
Jeff just blinks at you for a few moments, realizing you weren’t the little girl he used to push around and take advantage of in college anymore. “Made partner last year, actually.”
“That must be easy to do when your dad owns the practice, huh?” Lando says, voice nothing but light innocence.
Jeff’s eyes bounce between you and Lando for several moments before he suddenly reaches into his pocket. “If you’d excuse me, it looks like the office is calling me.”
“A call from the office the day before Christmas! Gosh, you must be very important, Jeffery.” Lando’s low blow to Jeff’s big ego hits true and without another word, the man scampers out of the Starbucks without a second glance in your direction.
Once he’s gone, both you and Lando dissolve into giggles, your head finding it’s favorite spot on Lando’s shoulder. “I’m surprised he didn’t try to deck you there are the end.”
“And mess up his pretty lawyer hands? Honey, I doubt he even knows how to throw a punch.”

☀︎
The air is crisp. The wind is cold and harsher now than it was a few weeks ago. The first snow started falling about a week ago, making the journey a lot harder and slower, which isn’t in your favor at all. You want to go home sooner rather than later. You have already lost so much time, when you were alone and even now too. Your sickness slowed you down, slowed them down.
You are much better now. The fever had gone down five days into your antibiotic treatment. Your cough is still there, not as strongly as it was before but it’s there. On top of that, you don’t perform as well as you used to before the sickness. You get tired quickly, your muscles get sore and you struggle to breathe.
Nancy told you that it’s normal, that it might take a longer while for you to recover fully. Her brother Mike suffered for nearly two months after falling sick with pneumonia, carrying an inhaler with him at all times, just like you do too, now.
It frustrates you a little, because now they all watch you like hawks to make sure that you are not moving around too much. You are not allowed to go on runs or scavenge areas, at least not until you’re healthy again. Steve is scavenging with Eddie now mostly, but today Nancy joined him instead, leaving you and Eddie to stand guard on the snowy parking lot.
You don’t mind. You like spending time alone with Eddie, but you want to do something. Not being able to help is driving you crazy.
You play with the hair tie around your wrist, the one that Steve left on you, the one you haven’t taken off yet because he told you to keep it when you tried to give it back. You didn’t question where he got it or whose it was. You have a hunch.
“Fucking Nebraska.” Eddie murmurs as he leans against the side of the RV, looking up into the grey sky.
“What’s wrong with Nebraska?” You ask, chuckling.
Eddie shrugs at you, raising his axe, and he points all around at the snow. “That.”
“Nebraska isn’t the only state that’s covered in snow right now, Eddie.” You smile in amusement. You rub your glove covered hands together as you turn your body towards him.
He narrows his eyes at you, sighing loudly.
“Yeah well, we should have been in uh… Wyoming, Idaho or freaking Utah by now but instead we’re stuck in this godforsaken state. I swear it’s only gonna bring us bad luck.”
You furrow your eyebrows and giggle at him, shaking your head.
“This state is really on your most hated list, huh?”
Eddie scoffs as he turns to face you. His cheeks are red, his nose is too. His bottom lip is trembling from the cold. A few snowflakes adorn his curls.
“Yup.”
“Well… if it makes you feel any better… It took me a year to get to Indiana from New York,” you admit, shrugging. “Something always gets in the way. Just like now, if it isn’t the blocked roads then it’s the time we use for scavenging. If it isn’t that, then it’s the time we spend looking for gas… and if it isn’t that then… It's a sickness.” You sigh, looking down at your feet as you kick the snow on the ground.
Eddie’s eyes soften. Sympathy flashes in them. You felt guilty for falling sick, for slowing them down, for being a ‘burden’ as you had called yourself. He felt a little angry for the way you talked about yourself, for the way you thought you had to apologize for not feeling well.
A soft huff falls from his lips as he bumps his shoulder into yours. He reaches for your hand and gives it a tight squeeze.
“Sweetheart, if you mention that one more time… I swear to Ozzy I will eat all your Kitkat’s.”
Your dimples show when your lips curl into a smile. You shake your head at him, looking back into his eyes with a mean look on your face. You raise your hand up and point your finger at him.
“Not my Kitkat’s.” You threaten, making him chuckle.
Eddie grins at you.
“Stop feeling guilty and I won’t steal your candy, Sweets. It’s simple.” He shrugs.
You roll your eyes at him and he gasps at that, looking at you offended. He throws his hand to his chest and leans back.
“Did you just roll your eyes at me, Sunshine?” He asks shocked, using the nickname Steve calls you by.
You shake your head at his act, giggling at his dramatics. You lean down and sink your hand into the snow, scooping some up into your hand. You move back up, smirking evilly at him before you throw it at his face.
“You’re such a dork, Eddie Munson.”
Another louder gasp falls from his lips when the coldness hits his skin and he stares at you bewildered. He brings his hand up to his face and wipes away the snow that is now stuck to his skin.
You are slowly backing away, eyes glinting with amusement as you giggle loudly.
“You did not just…” He glares at you, taking a step towards you. “You little witch.”
Your eyes widen when he leans down and scoops some snow onto his palm before he charges at you. A squeal falls from your lips as you turn around quickly, trying to run from him.
“Oh, now you’re trying to run?” Eddie chuckles loudly behind you. “Don’t you wanna finish this little snowball fight?”
“Nope!” You giggle loudly, hoping that Steve won’t come out of the store and catch you and Eddie running around like little kids.
“Come here!”
“Nuh uh!”
You make the mistake of looking back at him, not controlling your steps like you should. Your foot catches onto ice under a layer of snow and you suddenly lose your balance, slipping on the ice with both feet. You try to steady yourself but to no avail, you are falling. Though you don’t feel the rough concrete underneath you like you were expecting. Instead you fall on something soft… well, softer than the concrete would have felt.
“Oof…”
Only when you’re on the ground and you feel the arms around your waist and your head protected against a chest, do you realize that you didn’t fall on the ground because Eddie caught you and you landed on top of him instead while he took the fall for you both.
“Ow…” He murmurs underneath you, grunting at the pain in his back.
“Oh my god,” you mumble as the shock wears off and you quickly turn around to face him, not getting up just yet. Your eyes are wide and your face is serious, at least until you look at him and all the snow in his hair.
You stare at each other in silence, breathing heavily. His lip twitches first and then yours follows suit. His eyes flash with amusement and before you know it, you both burst into laughter.
Tension falls off your shoulders. Tension you didn’t realize you even had. But this feels good, you can’t remember the last time you laughed. Especially like this, to the point of tears.
“Goddamn, you’re a klutz,” Eddie laughs as he leans his head back into the snow, not caring anymore at this point.
You shake your head, unable to stop the laughter that keeps falling from your lips.
Eddie lets go of your waist and brings his hand up to your back, patting it softly.
“Are you okay?”
You bring your hand up to your face, wiping away the stray tear that escaped from your eyes. You nod at his question.
“I had a safe fall,” you giggle before it gets cut off by a cough.
Eddie continues to pat your back. He presses his palm against the snowy ground and pushes himself up into a seating position, grunting a bit. You turn away from him and cough into your elbow, clenching your eyes shut.
“Shit, Sweets.” He mumbles. “Do you need your inhaler?”
You shake your head at him. Once you calm down, you press your hand against your chest and turn back to face him. Your eyes are a little glassy from all the coughing.
Eddie’s eyes soften, he gives you a tight lipped smile as he pats your back one last time.
“No laughing for you anymore, young lady.” He gives you a pointed look.
You snort and roll your eyes.
“Hey guys, we–” Steve halts in his tracks suddenly when he finds you on the ground with Eddie. His face falls and his eyes flash with confusion when he takes in the position you’re in – Eddie is sitting up on the ground while you are on top of him, in his lap. By the look on Eddie’s state, he knows you both must have slipped and fallen but how did you get to that point in the first place? And why is Eddie’s arm around your waist?
He clenches his jaw without realizing it. The sourness inside of him spreads quickly, burning in his chest and taking over his whole body. He clenches his fists around the basket he is holding, gripping it so tightly that his knuckles turn white. He stares at Eddie’s hand and how he places it on your hip. Eyes burning with anger.
Steve doesn’t like this and he doesn’t even realize why.
Your head snaps towards Steve and you frown at the look on his face. Before you even begin to question it, your eyes fall on the basket he is holding and curiosity gets the best of you. You carefully get off Eddie and place your feet back on the ground, accepting his hand that he offers to you.
Steve’s eyebrows knit together strongly and the fire in him spreads further and up to his face, causing his cheeks to redden.
You don’t notice but Eddie does, especially when he catches Steve watching how you help him up. How you remove the snow from his jacket and his cheek, making sure that he is clean again before you make your way towards him.
Eddie raises his eyebrows in surprise, seeing the glare that is directed at him, the murderous gaze. If looks could kill, he would drop dead by now. If he didn’t consider Steve to be one of his best friends, he would have feared him right now. But Eddie only feels smugness and amusement.
If jealousy had a name, it would be Steve Harrington.
Eddie’s lip curls into a smirk, and he snickers under his breath.
“This is too good,” he murmurs under his breath. He is gonna tease him. Oh yeah. He is gonna enjoy this one.
“What’d you find?” You ask cheerfully as you make your way towards him, smiling brightly already.
Steve looks away from Eddie and down at you. His eyes instantly soften when they meet yours. The sourness remains in his chest but something else spreads even quicker… warmth.
You grab the edge of the basket with both hands and peek inside. Your smile falls and your eyes widen. A gasp of excitement falls from your lips when you catch sight of the knitted scarf.
You look up at him, mustering up your best puppy eyes.
“Can I have that one?” You plead.
Steve’s heart skips a beat at the look on your face. Those eyes. He feels his knees falling weak every time you look at him like this.
He swallows the growing lump in his throat and he nods.
He almost wants to laugh at your question though. He spent fifteen minutes picking out a scarf for you. He didn’t want just any one. He grabbed the pink one at first before he caught sight of this one. He was unaware of Nancy’s smug face.
“I picked it out for you.” He mumbles, lip curling upwards when your wide eyes meet his again.
“You did!?” You nearly squeal as you grab it from the basket, jumping on your feet slightly as you wrap it around yourself.
Steve’s eyes sparkle as he takes in the pure happiness on your features, all because of a pastel yellow colored scarf.
“How’d you know this was my favorite color?” You ask, feeling the fluttering of your heart so strongly at this moment, especially when you look into his hazel eyes.
Steve feels caught and he sinks into himself a little. Heat creeps up to his cheeks and he grows flustered… embarrassed. He clears his throat, shifting from one foot to another.
He clears his throat, wanting to punch Eddie now more than ever as he catches sight of the smug bastard in the back.
“I honestly didn’t know… I– I just… remembered you said you had a sunflower field behind your house, so I thought…” he trails off and looks back down into your eyes. They are sparkling for him. Your smile is wider than it was in weeks. You’re happy. “Good to know, though…”
Your heart skips a beat, and your stomach flutters wildly. He remembered your sunflower field? You told him that in the very beginning, when he didn’t even talk back much, when you just rambled his ear off. You didn’t even think he listened to you, let alone remember what you talked about to him.
“Thank you so much, Stevie!” You smile widely as you take a step closer to him. You rise to your tippy toes and grab onto his shoulder as you press your lips to his cheek, pecking it softly.
Steve freezes. He tenses up. Not because he didn’t like it but because he did. He liked it. He liked the feeling of your lips on his skin. A little too much.
You pull away and brush past him when you notice Nancy coming out of the store, carrying two bags. You leave him standing with glowing cheeks.
The need to escape takes over and despite feeling like his feet are glued to the ground, he forces himself to make his way towards the RV, ignoring the racing in his chest.
He walks past Eddie but not without sending a glare towards him. He reaches into the basket, and picks out the grey beanie, throwing it at the metalhead without a single word.
Eddie catches it before it hits him in the face. A loud snicker falls from his mouth when he realizes why Steve is so salty and why his cheeks are like the color of a ripe tomato. He follows him. Of course he does. Eddie sees the perfect opportunity.
“Thanks for that, man.” Eddie holds up the beanie.
“Yeah, you’re welcome.” Steve grumbles under his breath. He throws the door open to the RV and steps inside. Dropping the basket on the table, he starts taking out the cans of food he found and starts stacking them up in the cabinets.
Eddie leans against the wall and crosses his arms over his chest.
“What were you two doing out there?” Steve asks after two minutes of silence.
“Had a little snowball fight.” That is an exaggeration, and he knows it, but he wants to see Steve’s reaction. “And then we fell.”
Eddie can’t see his face. Steve’s back is turned to him as he fills up the cabinets. Though he can see how he tenses up and falters a little.
“Right…” Steve scoffs. “She fell on your lap?”
There it is. Eddie is surprised; that was quick.
He doesn’t bother hiding his snickering. He pushes himself off the wall and moves up beside him, tilting his head at the former jock. He smiles smugly when he sees the clenched jaw.
“Is that jealousy, Big Boy?”
Steve narrows his eyes at him. He grips the edges of the counter and slowly turns to face him.
“I’m just…–”
“You’re just what, Steve? Jealous?” Eddie cackles, enjoying this far more than he should. He raises his hand up and places it on Steve’s chest, patting it roughly. “Don’t worry, man. She is all yours, I promise.”
Steve huffs and he shakes his head, opening his mouth to speak.
“Yellow is her favorite color huh? I didn’t know that. You didn’t either, she didn’t even tell you–”
“Stop.” Steve sighs. He brings his hand up to his face and pinches the bridge of his nose. The tension in his shoulders rises when he realizes the weight of Eddie’s words. Deep down he knows he is right, he knows it. He doesn’t want to acknowledge it. He doesn’t want to think about it. He doesn’t want to admit it. He fears it. He can’t have those feelings. He can’t allow himself to care more than he does right now. He knows where this will end – how it almost ended a few weeks ago. If he allows these feelings, if he lets them out only for something to happen… he will never recover.
The smug look on Eddie’s face falls when he realizes the seriousness of this situation as he reads the look on his face.
Steve is holding back. He is holding back out of fear, not realizing that this could potentially make everything so much worse.
“Steve…” Eddie sighs as his hand moves to grip his shoulder. “I know what you’re trying to do here–”
“Don’t.” Steve warns him. Like he doesn’t want to hear it, like he doesn’t want to even consider his words. “Just don’t, Munson.”
He couldn’t even finish the sentence. He couldn’t even utter a single word and it frustrated him a little but he also understands it.
“Fine…” Eddie sighs, and he lets his hand fall back to his side.
Steve takes a deep breath. He runs his fingers through the mess of his head. His hair got so long in the past few months. The past self of him would be mortified at the sight of him now.
Steve glances at Eddie. He can’t stand the sympathetic look in his dark eyes. He doesn’t want to be pitied.
“You know what you need–”
Steve rolls his eyes and he pulls back, crossing his arms over his chest.
“I said don’t–”
“Hear me out, will you?” Eddie mumbles in annoyance. He rolls his eyes back at him and turns around, opening the cabinet where you have put all the special things. He reaches for the bottle. A grin spreads on his face before he turns around. He holds it up with a wiggle of his brows.
Steve shakes his head, “nope.”
“Oh yeah.” Eddie nods and by the look of his determined face, Steve knows he will lose this argument. “You gotta let loose a little. Swallow those feelings down with a little help of my former best friend.” Eddie grins at the whiskey bottle.
Steve sighs.
“We’ll play a little drinking game… and who knows, maybe we’ll find out some dirty truths from your girl's past.” Eddie cackles.
“She’s not my–”
The door bursts open and you come rushing in, carrying one of the bags you grabbed off Nancy’s shoulder. You halt in your tracks and look between them. The frustrated gaze in Steve’s eyes and the excited one in Eddie’s tells you everything you need to know.
Nancy comes stumbling in behind you.
Eddie turns towards you, smirking at the two of you as he holds up the whiskey bottle.
“Wanna play a game?”
-
The fire keeps you brittle warm, allowing your cheeks to burn a little. The cold doesn’t even touch you right now, you’re so close to the heat. The bowl of soup is warm in your hands. You keep glancing towards Steve as you watch him eat.
Eddie is rambling his ear off about DnD, something Steve couldn’t care less about. He keeps humming and grumbling in response.
Nancy had already finished her dinner. She is rubbing her hands over the fire, warming herself up.
You found a little hidden spot, behind trees and ruins, allowing you to let the flames burn higher than usual. Allowing you to feel a little more comfortable. You did a perimeter check with Steve before dinner, and he demanded to do it slowly for you, and this area seemed pretty safe and clean.
“So… how about some good ‘ol never have I ever?” Eddie smirks as he picks up the bottle of whiskey he carried outside before.
Your eyes light up. The urge to let loose, even if just for one night, for a few hours is so big. You nod at him, putting your now empty bowl on the ground beside your feet.
“Yes, please!”
Nancy chuckles at the enthusiastic smile on your face. Eddie’s eyes lock with hers and she shrugs at him, mumbling “sure.”
Eddie grins at her, knowing she wouldn’t have given in so easily in the past. She sure has changed.
He looks at Steve last to find him staring at you. Eddie knows that he is curious, it’s in his eyes.
“I’m not drinking—“
“Oh come on!” Eddie groans, throwing his head back.
“If I am willing to drink then you gotta do it too, Steve!” Nancy says, shrugging at him.
“Someone’s gotta stay sober.”
“Not like we’re gonna get blackout drunk, man. Besides the area is safe—“
Steve sighs, shaking his head. “You can never know.”
“Steve…” You sigh, pulling the attention on you. You tilt your head to the side, pouting at him. “Please…”
Steve huffs softly.
Your features, your skin, your hair look so soft in this light. The golden flames make you look even more beautiful. Something flutters in his chest when you bat your eyelashes at him.
He breathes in shakily, and by the way Eddie snickered beside him, he knows he heard it.
Steve clears his throat as he shakes his head.
“You’re not drinking either, Sunshine. You’re still coming down from your sickness and you’re still on pain meds.” He says sternly.
Now your frown and your pout deepens. Your stomach sinks a little and the excitement wears off instantly.
“Oh… right.” You whisper.
Steve watches the way your face falls and your shoulders slump. A saddening look flashes in your features. He is surprised to see you giving up so easily, he expected you to put up a bit of a fight.
“Shit,” Eddie murmurs. He didn't think about it either.
You sigh deeply. You look between all of them and straighten your back again.
“You can still play!”
Steve can’t help but feel a twinge of guilt bubbling up inside of him. He saw how excited you were when Eddie suggested the game.
“Hold on,” Steve mumbles as he pushes himself up from his seat. He disappears into the RV, making you all frown in confusion. You hear some rustling, some cans moving around before he comes out again, holding a can of Dr. Pepper in his hand. He makes his way to you, lips curling into a small smile. He holds it out for you. “I know it’s not the same but… you– we can still play.”
You stare at the red soda can in his hand. Your soft eyes light up as you look up at him.
His throat bobs when he swallows nervously. His heart skips yet another beat as he looks down into your eyes.
Steve couldn’t care less about the game. If it wasn’t for you, he would call it a day and go to sleep.
“Yeah,” he whispers softly.
You are both unaware of the eye contact Nancy and Eddie are holding. To the looks on their faces and of the mischief crossing Eddie’s face as he grabs the plastic cups he had already prepared before. He unscrews the lid and pours the whiskey.
“Thank you,” you whisper as you take the soda from Steve’s hands. Blush rises to your cheeks and your hand warms even more when your fingers brush against his own.
Steve only smiles at you before he makes his way back to his seat. He curls his fingers into his hand, clenching it tightly as he still feels the mark of your touch. A sigh leaves his mouth when he sinks back into his camping chair.
Eddie holds the cup out to him, and Steve only accepts it reluctantly.
“Don’t think too much,” Eddie says to him. “It’s gonna be good for you, trust me.”
“If you say so.” Steve snorts as he accepts the cup. He can’t remember the last time he even smelled alcohol.
A pop sounds through the circle as you open the can. You bring your knees up to your chest and tug the blanket tighter around you, getting comfortable as giddiness rushes through your body. This reminds you of high school… only this is even better. You’re around friends.
Eddie puts the bottle back down after handing Nancy her cup. He leans back and looks around the circle, smirking at Steve – the latter already knowing that this means nothing good.
“So…” Eddie starts, wiggling his eyebrows. “Who’s starting?”
Steve sinks deeper into his seat, he looks down at his drink, sloshing it around in the cup.
“Never have I ever played DnD.” Nancy says, making both you and Steve chuckle.
Eddie raises his eyebrows at her, tilting his head as he brings the cup up to his lips.
“You’re doing me a favor here, Wheeler.”
Before he can even down the drink like he had planned to do, Steve leans forward and grabs Eddie’s wrist, “hold on. You ain’t downing that drink. We’re not in high school going home safe after. Doesn’t matter how safe this area seems to you, we’re still in the middle of nowhere… during the goddamn end of the world. We’re taking sips, not shots.”
Steve’s face is stern as he lectures Eddie, who looks like a kid getting scolded by his father.
You can’t help but giggle.
“Okay, dad.” Eddie mumbles with wide eyes. “Sips, not shots, got it.”
Nancy laughs at their interaction.
Eddie takes a sip, keeping his eyes on Steve, who watches him closely, warning him with his eyes.
“See.” Eddie shows him the cup. “I just took a sip.”
“Good.” Steve grumbles before he leans back into his seat.
Eddie turns back to Nancy, grinning evilly. “Alright Wheeler. Never have I ever… gotten straight A’s in high school.”
A groan falls from her lips, she rolls her eyes at his lame attempt at making her drink. She brings the cup up to her lips and takes a sip.
Steve glances at you, expecting you to take a sip as well but you don’t. Your can remains propped up on your knees.
“No A’s?” Eddie raises his brows at you. “I’m surprised.”
You shrug. “The best I got were B’s.”
“Something I could only ever dream of.”
Nancy rolls her eyes at him again, “you were just lazy, Eddie.”
“Are you saying I’m smart, Nancy Wheeler?” He smirks at her.
“I’m saying you could have been better, dumbass.”
Eddie waves her off and looks between you and Steve, “who’s next?”
Steve shrugs and gestures to you, holding his cup.
You blush a little when he flashes you a smile. You tug your blanket tighter to you and look back into the fire.
“Um… never have I ever…” You pause, trying to think of something you have always wanted to do. “Gone on a picnic date…?”
Eddie sits still, not bringing the cup up to his lips. Steve is not drinking either. The three of you glance at each other before you all look towards Nancy, who is the only one to take a sip of the whiskey. She scrunches up her face at the bitter taste.
A sullen look takes over her face and if you didn’t look close enough, you would have missed the way her eyes flashed with sadness before she took that sip. She breathes in sharply and clears her throat before she plasters a smile onto her face as she looks back to you.
“You have never gone on a picnic date?”
Steve glances at you too with curious eyes.
You shake your head. You always wanted to go but no one ever asked you out. Your ex-boyfriend always told you that he wasn’t a fan of date nights – must have been because he was too busy taking other girls out.
Steve’s chest pains a little at the saddened look on your face.
“No, but anyways… It’s your turn, Steve!”
Steve blinks as he stares at you, your eyes now gazing into his. His cheeks flush under the weight of your eyes. He shifts on his chair.
“Uh…” He can’t focus when you look at him, especially with that little tilt in your head and the innocent eyes. He looks down, at the crackling wood and the golden flames. His heart skipping a little harder. This is ridiculous. “Never have I ever uh…”
What stupid thing would Robin say?
What silly line would escape her mouth?
“Been arrested…?”
Eddie chuckles loudly beside him. “See for someone who doesn’t want me to get drunk, you sure are doing a bad job, Harrington.” He laughs before he takes a big sip of his whiskey.
You gasp and lean forward, “how, when, where, why?” You ramble.
Steve’s shoulders shake when laughter escapes him at the look on your face. The wide eyes and the dropped jaw.
“Oh, Sweetheart…” Eddie trails off. “I got arrested several times.”
“For what!?”
“For being an idiot!” Nancy chuckles. She witnessed it herself once, Hopper running after a handcuffed Eddie who somehow managed to escape before he was forced into the cop car.
“Then Jonathan must’ve been an idiot too!” Eddie scoffs. “Didn’t you get arrested with him!?”
She shakes her head at him, “nope. I just went to the station with him.”
You don’t notice the way Steve looks away, awkwardly and tense at the current conversation.
“Why are you all getting arrested!?” You ask, confused.
Nancy shrugs at you.
You glance at Steve and raise your eyebrows at him, “did you get arrested too?”
He purses his lips and shakes his head, “nope. Always managed to get away before the cops were at the crime scene.” He jokes.
You roll your eyes at him but chuckle softly.
“So I’m friends with a bunch of criminals, is that it?” You joke.
“Oh yeah.” Eddie nods his head, making his curls bounce. “Bet you’re the worst of us all though.” He points his finger at you.
You press your palm against your chest, humming. “Cold blooded killer, you said it before.” You joke, looking at him seriously.
“Exactly.”
The game continues and the lines get sillier as Eddie keeps refilling the cups with Whiskey. You notice how the tension in Steve’s shoulders disappears after a few bigger sips of the liquor, how the redness in his cheeks glows stronger beneath the orange hues of the campfire. Your heart flutters every time his eyes flash with amusement, with happiness. Every time his laughter echoes, you feel something in you heating up in a way it never has before.
For a moment, the world out there is gone. It’s just the four of you, being normal people. You aren’t out here trying to survive. You aren’t out here surrounded by death. You aren’t out here barely pushing through this world. Right now, you can be a group of friends having fun… just that. And you enjoy it so much. You have never felt more welcomed than you do with them.
Nancy’s eyes shine with tears of laughter as Eddie continues his story of the girl who threw up on his shoes when he tried flirting with her. His goal was to ask her out on a date, not realizing that she was fully drunk until it was too late.
“God… why do you always have the lamest dating stories, Munson?” Steve laughs, blinking away his own tears.
“That poor girl! She must have been so embarrassed!” You mumble, trying not to giggle as much.
“Sweetheart, I threw up right after. We were both embarrassed.”
You break into laughter again, though your face cringes in disgust at the image of it in your head.
“Did you ever see her again, after?” Steve asks, his lips twitching as he tries to stop laughing.
“Yeah, in the school hallway. It was awkward as hell.” Eddie admits with wide eyes.
“God…” Nancy mumbles, amused. She leans back and tilts her head up, looking up into the sky with a lazy smile on her lips.
“Yeah…” Eddie chuckles to himself as he looks into the fire. His finger traces the rim of his cup.
For a moment, silence takes over. Only the crackling of the wood is heard around you. You watch the flames too, contentment filling you.
You don’t notice his eyes on you or the way they scan your face, the way they look at you. You don’t realize that he is smiling or that his eyes are sparkling. If only you looked up.
“Never have I ever had sex.” Eddie snorts, knowing he will make everyone drink this time.
“Of course,” Nancy snorts and straightens up in her seat again, bringing the cup to her lip, she finishes the remains of her whiskey.
Steve rolls his eyes as he follows suit, finishing the last bit of his drink. He turns to face you and a frown appears on his face.
Eddie notices the look on his face when he has taken the biggest gulp of the night.
You avoid their eyes, blushing furiously as you continue to stare into the fire. Your shoulders, your whole body is tense. Embarrassment is written all over your face. You sit still. The soda can frozen in your lap. You haven’t taken a single sip and you don’t plan on taking one as your fingers play with the loose string on your blanket.
Steve’s eyes widen when the realization hits him.
Oh.
Nancy’s lips part in surprise, her eyes soften when she sees just how flustered you are.
Eddie is the last to realize but when he does, he nearly chokes on the whiskey. He gulps down and coughs a little. Bringing his hand up to his chest as his wide eyes search for yours.
“You… You’re a virgin, Sweetheart?” He gasps, knowing he should be approaching the topic a little more gently but he is too shocked, too intoxicated to let that rational voice in his head tell him what to do.
Eddie is flabbergasted.
And Steve… Steve’s eyes are filled with confusion and disbelief. His heart is pounding in his chest. How?
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry but… how?”
Eddie asks the question that repeats itself in Steve’s mind.
You bite your lip and look at him, avoiding Steve’s eyes. You feel too embarrassed.
“You’re not fucking with us, are you?” Eddie squints his eyes, finding it hard to believe.
“Nope.”
“But… You said you had a boyfriend!” Those words come tumbling out of Steve’s mouth.
Eddie’s and Nancy’s heads snap towards him. This is something they didn’t know about you.
You roll your eyes and huff, “just because I had a boyfriend doesn’t mean that I slept with him. Besides… that was the exact reason why he told me I was immature… the exact reason why he cheated on me.” You mumble, looking down.
Steve’s eyes harden at that. His chest burns with rage over that prick that was given the chance to date you only to fuck you over.
Nancy leans forward, her protectiveness kicking in, shooting off the roof.
“He cheated on you because you weren’t ready to sleep with him?” She scoffs, slurring her words a bit. Her blue eyes burn with anger for someone she doesn’t even know. “What– Men! Men fucking suck!”
You smile a little.
Eddie moves closer and pats Nancy’s back.
“Hey, not all of us are bad,” Eddie chuckles.
Steve looks down at his cup. His heart aches at the thought of how you felt back then. He knows your heart was crushed and you were devastated. You don’t have to tell him that for him to know.
“I hope he died. Gruesomely. Fucked in the ass by an infected–”
You crack up at her words. The tension slips away as amusement takes over and you and Eddie start laughing loudly at her.
Steve leans forward, he puts the empty cup down and presses his palms together, entwining his fingers. He glances at you, his eyes tracing your features while you are distracted.
“So uh… nothing?” Eddie asks after your laughter dies down. His curiosity gets the best of him. His eyes keep glancing towards Steve to catch his reactions.
You shake your head shyly.
Nancy eyes you, wanting to make sure that you are comfortable talking about this.
“No… It’s not like I don’t have the need…” You admit, surprising yourself even. But you feel safe talking about this, comfortable. Like you won’t get judged. “I mean– I had my own you know…”
Eddie raises his eyebrows, playing coy, playing dumb.
Steve straightens up a bit, nerves growing wild inside of him as he stares at you.
Eddie bows his head a little. “No? I know what?”
You avoid Steve’s eyes still. Heat rises to your cheeks, not from the fire but from the embarrassment inside of you. From talking about this in front of the guy you… you like.
You blink. Tapping your fingers against your knee.
“A helper…?”
Eddie almost bursts into laughter. He enjoys seeing you like this. He enjoys the way Steve is cracking his knuckles beside him, shifting on his chair.
Nancy licks her lips, holding back her smile when she realizes what he is doing, when she realizes how red Steve’s cheeks are.
Frustration bubbles up inside of you when you notice the mischief flashing in Eddie’s brown eyes.
“For fucks sake! A vibrator! A fucking vibrator!”
Nancy giggles loudly beside you. She is definitely gonna bring that up later.
Steve nearly falls over. His heart almost beats out of his chest. His eyes are glued on you. Heat spreads across his whole body and before he can even stop it, images start cursing through his mind. Images of you… of you on your bed, of your hands on your body, on your bare body that he had seen already. The realization strikes that he was the first to see you like this, to touch your soft skin, to hold you.
Suddenly his heart does more than just flutter.
Eddie smirks at you. His shoulders shake.
“Yeah, just wanted to make sure it was that.”
You roll your eyes at him.
“You fucking dick!”
Nancy and he chuckle at you, sharing amused glances.
“Now…” You start after a moment of silence. “I don’t know if it’ll ever happen, and I regret not giving my virginity to my ex…” You admit a little shamefully.
The three of them look at you in question.
“Why do you say it won’t?” Steve asks.
You chuckle softly and shrug as you look up at Steve, “look around us, Steve. It’s the end of the world… I could die tomorrow and I think it’s obvious to say that the chances of finding someone in the apocalypse are pretty scarce.”
They all fall silent, looking at you with pity – something that you don’t want, something that you hate.
But they notice that you are actually afflicted by it.
Eddie narrows his eyes, shifting in his seat. He looks at Steve, noticing the way he watches you intently. A sliver of yearning in his hazel eyes.
If he doesn’t take the chance…
Eddie clears his throat. Licking his lips, he looks back at you.
“Listen, if I didn’t have my sweetheart, I’d offer to make your first time the best night of your life,” he says cockily. A smirk tugging at his lips when he feels Steve’s angry eyes on him.
You don’t even pay much attention to his comment. You nearly give yourself a whiplash by how fast you turn towards him.
“You have a sweetheart!? Wait! Are you talking about your guitar? You showed me pictures of it and–”
“Of course not my guitar!” Eddie interrupts you, grinning. “I have my love waiting for me in California!”
Your eyes lighten up and you sit up straighter, curious to hear about his love story.
But Steve and Nancy roll their eyes and groan.
“Don’t listen to him, he never wanted to tell us… so obviously he is bluffing.” Nancy murmurs. “If he had a sweetheart we would have known about her or him!”
Eddie scoffs, though the smile on his face doesn’t disappear, instead it grows even wider.
“Honestly Nancy… If I were really single, I would have tried my luck with this young lady I have in front of me the moment I saw her. She’s funny and sweet and she’s hot as hell. Who wouldn’t try to make a move on that piece of ass?”
Your eyes widen, and you instantly grow flustered, cheeks burning like crazy.
The bitter taste on Steve’s tongue returns and he can’t even hide his frown this time when he looks at the metalhead beside him, only to realize that he fell right into his trap. Eddie is already looking back at him with a smug smirk on his face.
Nancy is watching you, how you flush all over while you sip your soda. She holds back her smile, thinking that it’s cute.
“Don’t worry, Sweetheart. I see you as nothing more than a friend.” He makes the message very clear… to Steve.
Yet, it does little to calm him down. The same sour feeling as he felt before spreads through his chest.
Silence fills the space around you for a moment and the air suddenly shifts. You don’t know what it is yet. You don’t notice the look on Nancy’s face and how the amusement slowly fades as the alcohol kicks in differently, affecting other kinds of emotions now.
“Well.” Eddie looks around, clapping his hands together. “Anyone else got a confession to make?”
Steve shakes his head just like you.
Nancy hesitates. A sullen look suddenly takes over, crossing over her features out of nowhere. She blinks rapidly as she stares into the fire, chewing on her bottom lip.
“I love Robin.”
You slowly look towards her, unlike Eddie who snaps his head into her direction, looking at her in surprise.
But Steve, he already knew, well– he suspected it. He knew about Robin’s feelings. He knew that she fell in love with Nancy. He remembers how guilty she looked when she confessed to him, fearing that he would hate her for falling in love with his ex-girlfriend. He remembers how scared she was, how she looked at him, like she thought that she was about to lose her best friend. He hugged her then and promised that it was okay. His love for Nancy was in the past and it was never real love to begin with, nothing to mourn over. Puppy love. And the thing that happened back in ‘86 was nothing more than a moment of desperation to feel the only real thing he once thought he had.
Eddie’s smile slowly fades, lips curling downwards as he stares at Nancy’s glossy eyes. She is his best friend but it’s something he didn’t know. It’s something she wasn’t ready to confess. To speak into the universe. To let out.
“She… She confessed to me. She told me that she loves me… that she’s in love with me. And then she died…on the same day.” She whispers and bows her head to hide the tears that are about to slip down her cheeks.
Steve breathes in shakily, he looks away and closes his eyes.
“I never said it back.”
Your heart breaks for her. She kept it all to herself for such a long time, it must have been eating away at her. Her sniffles pains you even more. You lean forward and place your hand on her knee.
“Shit…” Eddie whispers, staring at her with sad eyes as the realization slowly sinks in. “I didn’t know, Nance.”
“Yeah…” She whispers, not looking up just yet. “And now… I can never say it back.”
You don’t know what to say. Eddie doesn’t either. You’re both not even sure if words are what she needs or if she just needs to let this all out.
“I-I honestly never made a move on her before that because I thought she hated me…” She confesses, talking without a filter now. Her emotions take control, guided by the alcohol in her system.
You frown at her words, gripping her knee tighter as you try to see her face but it’s covered by her long hair.
“Why would she hate you, Nancy?”
Eddie looks between you both, his eyebrows furrowed.
“Because of what I did to Steve.” She whispers, slowly looking up at you.
Anxiety builds up inside of you and you begin to feel nervous.
“W-What did you do to Steve?”
Steve snaps his head towards the two of you, shaking his head with a panicked look on his face. “Nancy–”
“I cheated on him. Hurt him. I thought Robin would hardly forgive someone like that. That Robin wouldn’t even like someone that did that to her best friend… Even if that happened a long time ago…”
Steve closes his eyes with a sigh, murmuring a quiet ‘fuck’.
Eddie winces under his breath.
You draw back instantly, your hand falling off her knee. You take in a sharp breath. The realization rushing through you coldly. You grip the soda can tighter and look down.
Nancy was the girl he told you about.
She was the one who hurt him, who broke his heart.
All this time you have been traveling with them and you didn’t even know.
You feel like a fool.
And it’s sadness and insecurity that hits you the hardest. She was the girl. And you are nothing like her, not even in the slightest.
Steve looks up at you slowly. He tries to catch a glimpse of your face but it’s tilted so far down.
You don’t know what to feel, what to think.
How can he be around her? You’d never be able to travel with your ex-boyfriend who cheated on you, lied to you, acted like he loved you. You could never be around him, let alone be his friend… unless you still loved him.
Suddenly it’s nausea that bubbles up. Your heart sinks to your stomach. And now you wonder, would you have known sooner if you just put two and two together? If you would have taken a closer look?
“I never knew.” Eddie murmurs, patting her back.
“I didn’t want anyone to know,” Nancy whispers. “A-And that’s all… that’s all I got to confess. What about you…? Do you have anything…?”
You suddenly feel suffocated and you no longer want to sit here in this circle. It’s all become too much and all these questions running through your head begin to drive you crazy. You want to be alone. You need to think.
You clear your throat as you get up, picking up your discarded bowl from before and your empty soda can. You take a quick look around and force a smile on your face when Nancy looks up at you with her big eyes.
“I’m gonna go to sleep. I’m tired and my head is starting to hurt again.” You lie. You avoid both Steve’s and Eddie’s eyes.
“Oh.” Nancy mumbles, her shoulders slumping.
“Good night.” You whisper before you brush past Steve, ignoring the way he looks up at you in concern. You quickly make your way into the RV and shut the door behind you before any of them can question you.
You set everything down on the kitchen counter. Gripping the edges of it, you lean against it and close your eyes, sighing loudly.
You are confused and shocked, not understanding how it all went over your head for months. You could have known sooner. You should have. You wish you did.
A part of you wants to know more, the other part doesn’t.
You clean up your bowl and put everything away before you make your way into the tiny bathroom to brush your teeth. You hurry, wanting to be asleep before anyone comes in to check on you.
Not even the mint flavor of your toothpaste can get rid of the bitter taste on your tongue though.
“Sunshine?”
You almost groan in annoyance. Almost. You would have if it wasn’t him. You spit out the paste and rinse your mouth before you walk out. You plaster a smile on your face when you notice him standing by the kitchen counter.
He offers you a smile, “I uh… are you okay? Do you need anything?”
Your eyes soften. You press your lips together and shake your head, “no, I just… I wanna get some sleep.”
He brings his hand up to the back of his neck as he nods, “alright…”
You don’t move and neither does he.
Steve is so selfless. He’s so kind and sweet when he allows himself to be. He would do anything for his friends, showing you that he would do absolutely everything for the one he loves. There is not a single bad thing about him. So… how could she do this to him?
“I’m–”
“So Nancy…”
Steve can’t read the expression on your face nor can he figure out the emotion in your voice but if he didn’t know any better, he would think it is hurt… sadness. But why?
“Yeah…” Steve whispers.
He doesn’t know why he feels the urge to show you, to tell you that he doesn’t feel anything for Nancy, that he hasn’t felt anything for her in years, that he could never again.
You swallow harshly and nod. You take a seat on the bench and he follows you after a second, sitting down beside you.
“Do you…” You pause, not knowing if you’re actually ready to find out.
“I don’t love her anymore if that’s what you think.” Steve confesses, wanting – needing you to know.
He wishes he could ignore the way your shoulders slump in relief or the way your eyes fill with something that looks like hope.
“No?”
He shakes his head, “no. It was uh… It was puppy love but not real love, if it makes sense?”
“Oh.”
Steve takes a deep breath. He continues to look into your eyes, wanting to catch each and every one of your reactions.
“It was the first time someone else… cared for me. That someone seemed to like me for me and not because I was this popular guy… I only knew loneliness thanks to my parents being complete assholes.”
Your eyebrows furrow as though you’re in pain. The sympathy and the sadness the flashes in your eyes reminds him of Robin.
Steve runs his fingers through his hair, swallowing the lump that grew in his throat.
“I’m so sorry, Steve.” You frown, knowing how that ended for him.
“It’s okay, Sunshine.” He shrugs, his whisper is soft.
How could she look into his hazel eyes and not fall for him harder every day? How could she look at him and think that he wasn’t good enough? That there could be someone better out there? How could she look at him and not think that he was the best thing that’s ever happened to her?
There is little distance between you and your hand finds his before you can even think rationally.
Steve looks down at it. It’s not the first time he feels your touch like this. It’s also not the first time he feels that electric feeling cursing through him.
“But then… Robin came.”
“Wait then… you for Robin–”
“God, no, no…” Steve shakes his head, interrupting you quickly. “She just… She just filled that loneliness, and it made me realize that I was just chasing Nancy… pretending to be in love… Just to noy feel alone again…” He explains, cringing a little. “And then, Robin kind of started dating this girl, and I felt that bit of bitterness inside of me cause she was spending a little less time with me.”
You nod in understanding as he keeps talking.
“I tried dating around as well… But nothing worked out, no one wanted me for anything other than sex.”
You frown at his words, feeling anger and a sliver of jealousy burning in you.
“So I kind of… set my eyes back on Nancy again, not because I still loved her but… She was just the closest thing I had to a ‘real’ relationship. It was dumb to chase her again, to go after someone who hurt me. It took me a moment to realize that there are other versions of love that can be fulfilling.”
“Robin.”
He gives you a small smile, tapping your hand with his finger. He eyes the lilac hair tie around your wrist. It’s yours now. For safekeeping.
“Robin.” He nods.
He stopped seeking her out when he let go of a love he thought was… love. Maybe it should calm you down a little but it doesn’t.
“And now… that Robin is… gone?”
He knows what you’re asking.
You want to know if he will do it again, if he will chase after her again.
Steve shakes his head, humming. “I would never make that mistake again,” he chuckles, cringing at his younger self. “Besides, I don’t feel lonely.”
“Oh… Eddie and Nance?” You ask.
You secretly hope that you are the reason for that he doesn’t feel lonely anymore.
“No, I felt lonely with them too. I was… grumpy, remember?” He asks, cocking his eyebrow as his eyes flash with amusement.
You shake your head, “then what–”
“You came.” He confesses.
And it makes your heart flutter like crazy. Your eyes fill with so much hope. You straighten up and curl your hand around his as you gaze into his hazel eyes.
“You are… as stubborn as Robin was.” He whispers. “You remind me of her.”
Oh…
And then it hits you.
It hits you harder than anything else ever has before.
He never liked you for you.
He gave you a chance because you reminded him of the one person that meant everything to him. He gave you a chance because he saw her in you, because he could pretend.
You were never to him what he is to you.
You are a replacement. A placeholder.
And here you thought you found someone who likes you for you.
But of course not.
How did you never see it? Every time he talked about Robin, every time that he mentioned a memory, and– His eyes, they are looking at your wrist. At the hair tie, and– It was him… he put that on you, and now you knew. This wasn’t just anyone’s hair tie… this was Robin’s.
Your hand slowly slips away from his, looking down at the floor. You caught feelings only to find out that he saw you as a replacement for his soulmate. For someone he thought of as family, as a sister. He sees you that way, he will always see you that way and not as a woman. Not as someone who can try to give the love he wants and needs.
Because you are like Robin… and you are the opposite of Nancy.
You’ll never be like Nancy. She looks like… a woman, a strong woman that knows what she wants, that is experienced, that is mature, that knows how to handle most of the situations with a clear mind and you– You are reckless, a klutz like Eddie had called you, and you also were–
“You want a kitkat before bed, Sunshine?”
Immature.

Day 16: Pack Isolation Sickness
for @stmarchmm
Steve has never felt more at home than at a concert.
Ever since he was old enough to hitch a ride to Indy and sneak into places with a passable fake ID, he’s been drawn to live music however he can find it.
He’s not even very picky about the genre.
Of course, he has his favorite bands and singers, as most people do. A small collection of songs and artists who make him feel a little less alone in the world.
As a male omega (something that’s drawn mostly negative attention since he was old enough to present), Steve’s alone a lot.
His parents weren’t around much prior to his “unfortunate presentation,” but now they only pop in to take holiday family photos and pretend they’re good parents.
Then it’s back to some tropical island or big city where they can live the life they actually want.
Without a disappointing son.
So yeah, it’s been rough the last few years for Steve.
No real family or pack. Most of his friends stopped answering his calls when he lost his popularity or refused to sleep with them.
He’s a loner, but not by choice.
This is how he finally discovers the wonders of metal music.
Steve had overheard some geeky freshmen discussing a metal concert happening at the shitty bar in town that night.
The Hideout is notorious for not carding very well. His fake will be fine, even if half the town knows the Harrington’s omega son is only eighteen.
His interest is piqued.
A band called ‘Corroded Coffin’ is supposed to be playing. A group of local musicians who have the regular Tuesday night spot.
Steve’s there an hour early, charming his way past the scrutinizing gaze of the bouncer with a sweet smile and batted eyelashes. It usually works for him.
He then finds a barstool to wait on.
It’s a little warm in the bar, so much so that even the dim lights start feeling too bright.
Steve has felt on the edge of a cold for a while now. Never quite sick enough to call himself truly ill, but never quite feeling like himself either.
An occasional cough or runny nose. Minor things. Tolerable.
None of that is enough to keep him from the music. If he’s ill, then music is the cure to all his ailments.
There’s nothing in the world that can’t be remedied with a good rhythm and a catchy melody.
By the time Corroded Coffin is ready to start playing, Steve’s grown slightly impatient.
He’s almost bouncing in his shoes, antsy to move and dance and enjoy the music that’s beginning to come from the band on the tiny stage.
Steve notices right away that the members aren’t old enough to be here at The Hideout either. Primarily because they’re also students at Hawkins High.
Gareth, Jeff, Doug, and Eddie Munson.
He’s not had much interaction with any of them beyond watching Tommy pick on them, back when they used to be friends.
But he knows Eddie is the leader of his little group of freaks.
Steve’s fairly sure they all play some demon game too.
He may not be a part of any social groups any more, but Steve still hears gossip from others.
There’s also the matter of Eddie getting up on lunch tables and giving long, flashy, noisy speeches to the whole school about forced conformity and the repression of omegas in society.
For a while, he’s fairly sure everyone believed Eddie himself to be an omega (albeit, a nontraditional one) because of how he openly opposes strict secondary gender roles.
But that rumor was quickly cleared up by a fight between Jason and Eddie wherein alpha fangs came out.
He seems like an okay guy, if a bit strange.
Still, Steve knows enough about his own prior reputation to know he probably shouldn’t stick around for the show.
And yet.
The music keeps his feet planted firmly towards the front edge of the stage, filling his ears with booming riffs and drums.
It’s an addiction, the music.
Something powerful he takes many hits of, but it never seems to fully take the edge off, no matter how much he gets.
Steve stays for the whole set, eyes closed and head banging along with the drunks who’ve stumbled in off the street for liquor and a show.
When it finally stops, it’s hard to believe he’s been listening for almost an hour straight.
‘Getting lost in the music’ is an understatement for the way he feels.
As soon as the show is done, Steve’s energy is zapped. His legs feel suddenly weak and his heart is pounding away too fast.
The cold is catching up to him, leaving him with profound exhaustion and emptiness in its place.
Like maybe he’ll never feel normal or happy again.
A feeling of doom and despair washes over Steve. It’s not new, but it is miserable.
“Harrington?”
He blinks open his eyes.
When had he even closed them?
Steve attempts to straighten up and stop leaning against the nearest brick wall for support.
Eddie Munson is staring him down with a look of open confusion and hidden skepticism, as if maybe he’s mistaken about Steve’s identity in the dark bar.
“Munson,” he states with a shaky nod.
“Why are you here?” Eddie asks plainly.
It’s not a surprising question. This isn’t one of Steve’s usual joints, but apparently it is Eddie and his alpha friends’.
“I came for the music,” Steve answers truthfully.
“Our music?” Gareth joins in.
He nods, turning his body in the direction of the exit. ‘King Steve’ is long gone, but not everybody has allowed his past to stay there.
A group of four potentially hostile alphas staring Steve down isn’t the best idea, even if they haven’t given him a reason to bolt out of the place yet.
“Yeah, I heard you guys were good.”
He isn’t sure what else to reveal, but he still doesn’t feel well and this conversation is weird.
“We are,” Doug states, squinted gaze locked onto Steve like he’s the one who could be a threat.
As if he isn’t an omega facing four alphas.
“Right. I’ll— uh, just be going now,” Steve explains, trying to push by Eddie with no luck.
As soon as the older alpha puts a hand on his shoulder to stop him, Steve’s legs give out and he’s on the dirty bar floor.
“Whoa, what the hell? Are you okay?” Eddie asks, bending down to help him.
If only he could melt into the floor now. But Eddie’s arms are so nice wrapped around his waist and assisting him to stand. The alpha then leads him backstage, to what appears to be a green room of sorts.
It’s filled with musical equipment, but at least there’s a couch where he can sit.
Eddie sits right next to him, tucking Steve under his arm and holding him close.
“It appears the rumors are true then. King Steve really has no pack.”
The words aren’t said in a cruel manner, but it still breaks his heart a little to be reminded.
“What do you know about it?”
Eddie hums thoughtfully.
“Enough to realize you’re having a wicked case of isolation sickness and you’re gonna drop any minute now if we don’t take care of you properly,” Eddie replies, gesturing towards the rest of his band of friends until they’re all surrounding Steve.
“Why are you doing this?”
He’s openly crying now.
Jeff gives him a sad smile, rubbing his wrist against Steve’s neck gently.
“Because we know what it’s like to have our own pack look out for us. Whatever the hell happened with your old friends, we can’t leave an omega vulnerable like this. We’ll take care of you, Steve.”
Gareth takes hold of his hand.
Doug ruffles his hair, leaving a scent on the top of his head.
All of the Corroded Coffin boys are making sure Steve has physical contact and plenty of scents on him, assuring that his inner omega knows he has a pack around him.
It works fast, the combination of touches and instincts.
He hardly notices Eddie kissing his temple and murmuring sweet words to him about what a good omega he is until his body starts to feel like his own again.
"You're alright, Steve. Your alphas are gonna protect you, sweetheart."
"I really did like your music," he admits quietly.
The boys all chuckle at him, but not in an unkind way.
"Well, you're welcome to tag along to our shows anytime. You can be our first real groupie," Doug jokes.
Steve smiles at that.
It would be nice to have friends again. And it's not like he's got other places to be anyway.
"I'd like that."
Eddie gives his shoulder a squeeze and Steve leans right into the touch, laying his head on the alpha's shoulder in return.
All of the Corroded Coffin members are being so nice to him, even though he doesn't deserve it.
But the pull to be near Eddie is even stronger.
"What do you think about coming back to my place tonight, Stevie? The boys and I were planning on knocking back a few of my Uncle Wayne's beers and watching a sci-fi movie."
He nuzzles his face closer into Eddie's neck, using the action to nod his agreement to the proposed idea.
It takes a combination of efforts to get Steve safely onto Eddie's back so he can carry him out to his van (they also have to reassure the bartender that he's not being kidnapped).
But by the time they make it to Eddie's trailer, the alpha has mentally readied a ten step courting plan to implement on Steve.

grumpy!bucky x sunshine!reader where sunshine reader turns out to be the dominant one in bed
this is just filth.
Tumblr media
warnings: handjob, dirty talk? (reader)
bucky never expected this from you. from your sweet, innocent smile. the way you giggle, even at steve’s jokes that are never really that funny. there was no way he could guess that you would be taking him apart like a damn lincoln log set.
“does that feel good, jamie?” you tease him as you work his cock. you knew the effect you were having on him
sitting on the couch in his apartment - a couch you insisted that he get so you could comfortably cuddle while watching movies together - you poised on his lap, just on the edge of his thighs. what had started as a makeout session has now turned into something much more heated.
having been together for nearly 4 months and still not done the deed, mostly because bucky didn’t want to make it seem like that’s the only thing he wanted you for, bucky was pleasantly surprised when his sweet innocent girlfriend was suddenly taking charge of him.
you were pressing open mouthed kisses to his neck, your hand pressed to his still clothed cock. his hands were roaming from your waist to your back to the back of your head, wanting to touch all of you, feel all of you.
“so-oh shit,” bucky nearly fucking whimpers. this strong, beefy super soldier, turning into putty in your small hands.
the team was so fooled. you would bake cookies for them every week. on missions, you never dared to say a single swear word - something steve has come to respect. always wearing the most innocent, frilly little sundresses when you can. and here you are, whispering the dirtiest things in bucky’s ear.
“so hard for me already, baby,” you whisper in his ear, his hips bucking up to press harder against your hand. “and already so eager, too.” you giggle. you fucking giggle.
“please?” he begs. “god, please, sweets,” he whispers oh-so-needy, his hips still rutting into your hand.
“please what?” you take your hand away from his cock. “use your words like a big boy.”
he lets out a frustrated huff as he throws his head back, his hands settling on your waist and gripping you for dear life.
“please touch me?” he asks. “please touch me, please?” his desperation is palpable as his chest rises and falls.
“… here?” you ask, your hands gripping his broad shoulders firmly. he shakes his head. “how about… here?” you move your hands to his hair, gently yanking on his longer locks.
“fuck,” he moans as his head is tilted up, your lips connecting with his neck and leaving the prettiest marks he swears he’s ever seen. he can’t even complain, so lost in your touch, grateful for whatever you were willing to give him.
“or…” you continue to kiss his neck as you trail your hands down to the front of his sweatpants. he lifts his hips to help you push the waistband down. “here,” your hands finally connect with his member, your touch so gentle he wouldn’t even be able to tell if he weren’t so hyper aware of you right now.
he whimpers at the feather-light touch. “yes,” he nods eagerly. “right there, please?” he opens his eyes, looking down to see your small hand wrapped around his member. truth be told, the sight is better than he’s imagined - which he has… a lot.
“so polite for me,” you praise him and his hips rut into your touch. “there we go, baby,” you firmly wrap your hand around him, moving your hands up and down teasingly slow. you give him this smirk, making sure he knew what you were doing.
he moans for you, a debouched, wanton moan. a sound that he’s never elicited in his overextended life on earth. yet, you brought it out of him. he rests his forehead against yours, his hands still gripping your waist but now traveling to your hips. to rest there comfortably.
your hand picks up the pace, gripping him a bit tighter as you sweep your thumb over his leaky tip. “suck a pretty cock, jamie,” you say as you look down. “all mine.”
“yours,” he mimics your words. “all yours, sweets. forever.” he assures you - not that you ever had any doubts.
you pick up the pace, working your hand over his a bit quicker as his breaths come in shorter. his eyes shut as your foreheads remain together; he’s getting close. “so pretty like this,” you praise him. “coming undone for me. being such a good fucking boy, too.” his hips buck up again at the praise, he’s teetering right on the edge, just needing one more push. “finish for me, baby. cum all over my hand. make a dirty fucking mess for me, jamie.”
and he’s gone. his jaw drops as his hips work up to meet your hand, a cry of your name leaving his lips as his come spills from his pretty cock. his arms wrap around your waist, pulling you even closer as you work him through his high.
he swears your the best things that’s ever happened to him. it’s not just this - no. it’s your sweet voice cooing to him when he wakes up from a nightmare when you decide to sleep over. it’s you cooking his favorite meal ‘just because.’ it’s just you, dammit. everything about you made him want to hold you close in his arms and never let you go. he wanted to protect you and guard you with his life. he wanted to marry you - fuck. yeah, yeah. he did want to marry you. he wanted you to have his kids, too. this life-altering realization coming just as he… quite ironic, isn’t it?

According to Wayne, Eddie can sleep through anything.
It’s why he was late to school pretty much every day. That and the fact that he didn’t give a shit about it– but mostly because he always slept through his alarm clock.
But the thing is that to sleep through anything he needs to be asleep to begin with. And right now he can’t fall asleep because Steve hasn’t stopped tossing and turning in the past hour.
When Eddie comes close to falling asleep for what feels like the hundredth time only for Steve to twist around again, he can’t help but let out a frustrated sigh.
Steve freezes as he’s fixing the blanket around him. “Um, did I wake you?” he asks in a tiny voice.
“I’d have to be asleep for you to wake me up, big boy.”
Running his hands down his face, Steve groans. “Shit, sorry, man.”
“‘S fine, Stevie.” He gives Steve a sidelong glance. Thanks to the moonlight filtering through the window he can see that he’s frowning. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah, just– Can’t sleep.”
“I got that much, dude,” Eddie says with a snort. He hesitates, biting his lip nervously. “Um, is it because of me?”
It might’ve been Steve who suggested they shared his bed tonight, but maybe he changed his mind or maybe he only did it because he was trying to be polite and he expected Eddie to turn down the offer–
Steve frantically shakes his head. “No! No–”
Eddie isn’t convinced. “Are you sure? Because I can go–”
“No,” Steve says, more firmly this time. “Eddie, I promise, I’m just restless, s’all.”
Eddie relaxes. “Okay, yeah, I get that. It happens to me a lot, especially after– you know.”
“Yeah,” Steve sighs in sympathy. “So what do you do? When it happens?”
“Uh–” Eddie hesitates, a little worried that answering truthfully might make sharing a bed a bit awkward. Oh fuck it, he thinks. It was Steve who asked. “I usually just– you know, jerk off.”
Steve inhales sharply. He lets out a tiny, “Oh.”
And there’s the awkwardness.
Before Eddie can offer to take the couch again, Steve asks, “Does that, um– does that work for you?”
Eddie huffs a laugh. “Oh, like a charm. Makes me sleep like a baby.”
“I could use some of that,” Steve sighs longingly.
Eddie agrees– he’s noticed the black smudges under Steve’s eyes. “Well, I could, uh– go to the bathroom for a while if you want to–”
Steve sputters. “I’m not gonna ask you to go to the bathroom so I can jerk off!”
“Fine, then you can go to the bathroom. I’ll cover my ears, I promise,” Eddie says, trying to act casual but the truth is that if Steve actually took him up on the offer, Eddie’s brain would melt out of his ears just from knowing Steve is jerking off in the next room.
“Jesus, how loud do you think I am, man?” Steve asks with an incredulous laugh.
Eddie shrugs nonchalantly. “I don’t know, it’s not like I’ve given it much thought.” He has given it plenty of thought actually but Steve doesn’t need to know that. “Just trying to be helpful here, Stevie.”
“There’s something else you could do if you want to help,” Steve whispers after a short silence. He sounds strangely shy, nervous. He can’t possibly mean–
“Steve,” Eddie says, trying to keep his voice leveled. “Are you asking me to get you off?”
There’s a short moment where Steve doesn’t say anything and Eddie worries that he just made things even more awkward by assuming that’s what he meant, but before he can spiral he hears Steve’s soft reply. “Maybe.”
What the fuck?
“What the fuck?” Eddie mutters out loud though mostly to himself but Steve hears it anyway and lets out a panicked yelp.
“Christ, you know what? That was stupid.”
“Steve–”
But Steve ignores him, rolling on his side, away from Eddie, and as far as he can without falling off the bed. “Forget I said anything, you don’t have to–”
“I want to!” Eddie blurts out, perhaps a little too enthusiastically. “Uh, if– if it will help you.”
“Eddie, I can’t ask you to do that,” Steve says, still facing away from Eddie.
“I’m offering,” he says. This isn’t the kind of thing that happens to him and it definitely won’t be happening twice but he wants it– God, does he want it– so he moves closer, putting his hand on Steve’s waist, hearing his sharp intake of breath. “Let me help you, sweetheart.”
Steve’s entire body shudders. “Okay,” he breathes out. “Please, Eddie.”
Oh, shit.
Just the thought of doing this is enough to make Eddie’s blood rush downward, making his dick half hard so he’s careful to keep his hips angled away from Steve’s back as he scoots closer to him, moving his hand from Steve’s waist to his lower stomach, feeling his skin erupt in goosebumps beneath his touch.
“I got you, Stevie,” he whispers, fingers moving down, playing with Steve’s happy trail. He’s already panting and Eddie still hasn’t even touched him.
Jesus fucking Christ, he needs to touch him.
He slides his hand lower until his knuckles bump against Steve’s cock over his boxers. “You’re already half hard, sweetheart? Is this what was actually keeping you up?”
Steve lets out a low moan. He didn’t ask Eddie for a running commentary, just a helping hand, but Eddie can’t stop himself. He’s a loud guy through and through, so unless Steve tells him to shut up, he’ll keep running his mouth. Steve seems to be into it anyway.
He lazily strokes Steve’s cock over his boxers to get him to full hardness. Fuck, he’s big, Eddie thinks. He can’t wait to feel Steve’s hot skin–
“Can I touch you?” Eddie whispers into his ear.
“Yes, yeah,” Steve agrees quickly.
So Eddie slips his hand inside Steve’s boxers, sighing happily when he wraps his fingers around his hard length.
The touch makes Steve throw his head back with a groan, almost smashing it against Eddie’s nose. Thankfully he doesn’t, even though not even a bloody nose would make Eddie give up the chance to get Steve off.
However he does prop himself up with the arm he isn’t using to touch Steve so his head rests against Eddie’s shoulder so as to not risk an injury– and because it allows him to peer over Steve’s shoulder and watch how his hand looks wrapped around his cock.
And God the sight gets Eddie to full hardness, making his mouth water.
He starts stroking him slowly, gathering the precum from the tip and smearing it down and around Steve’s cock but it’s not enough.
When he lets go entirely, Steve whines, hips thrusting forward, chasing after Eddie’s touch.
Eddie shushes him gently. “‘M not going anywhere, sweetheart. Here, spit,” he says, holding his hand close to Steve’s mouth. He does as he’s told without hesitation. Eddie can’t stop himself from kissing Steve’s nape. “Good boy.”
“Oh, G-god,” Steve moans brokenly. It trails off into a high-pitched whine when Eddie wraps his hand around him again, the slide of his hand smoother now from Steve’s spit.
He pumps him loosely. “Better?”
“Y–yeah,” Steve manages, panting now.
The elastic of his boxers makes Eddie’s movements a little clumsy but Steve fixes it by jerkily shoving them down. While doing that, his ass presses back against Eddie’s front and there’s no way for him to hide that he’s fully hard in his own boxers.
But instead of shoving Eddie away or calling him out on it, Steve groans and shuffles back until Eddie’s chest presses against his back and Eddie’s cock is nestled against Steve’s now naked ass.
“Fucking– fuck,” Eddie chokes out, momentarily stopping his hand so he can get his breathing over control.
“Eddie–” Steve whines, his hips twitching and fucking his cock into Eddie’s fist. It pushes his ass back against Eddie’s crotch, which does little to help Eddie focus.
“‘M here, baby,” Eddie whispers, his teeth clamped over his lip. Steve’s hips are still moving–
But he starts stroking him again, reminding himself that this is about Steve.
“Oh God, yes,” he moans loudly.
“Fuck, I knew you’d be loud,” Eddie mutters in awe.
Steve lets out a choked laugh. “I thought– I thought you didn’t give it much– oh fuck, much thought.”
“I fucking lied,” Eddie admits with a scoff.
“I– I lied too,” Steve says, his breath coming faster when Eddie tightens his grip. “You were the reason, fuck– the reason why I couldn’t sleep. I kept thinking, oh God– thinking about how I wanted to be doing this instead.”
Something hot burns in Eddie’s stomach. “Well, sweetheart. All you had to do was ask.”
“Can– can I ask for something else?” Steve says shyly despite him currently grinding his ass against Eddie in an obscene way.
“Anything.”
“Fuck my thighs?” He asks, twisting his neck so he can look at Eddie, his eyes half-lidded, his pupils blown wide.
Eddie is pretty sure his brain momentarily short circuits.
When he doesn’t reply right away, Steve blindly reaches behind him, his hand connecting with Eddie’s hip. He clumsily tugs on his boxers, trying to get them off.
It snaps Eddie out of it. “Yes, yeah, fucking– yeah,” he mutters, momentarily letting go of Steve so he can shove his boxers down, his cock springing free and slapping against his stomach.
He gives himself a few strokes– to take the edge off and to spread the precum along his length until his cock is wet and shiny.
“Come here,” Steve says and Eddie doesn’t need to be told twice. He shuffles closer, angling the head of his dick forward, lining it up so it slides between Steve’s thighs.
And when it does, they both moan loudly at the same time.
Eddie takes a few deep breaths then reaches for Steve’s cock. The inside of Steve’s thighs is so warm and soft and he knows he’s not gonna last long, but he’ll make sure to make Steve come.
He makes sure his grip is tighter this time, his movements faster. He times them with his own thrusts, his cock sliding wetly in and out Steve’s meaty thighs.
“You feel fucking perfect, Steve,” Eddie groans, pressing his face into Steve’s shoulder blade. The praise makes Steve whimper, his cock pulsing in Eddie’s hand. “You gonna come, sweetheart?”
Breathing coming faster, Steve manages, “Yeah– yeah. So fuckin’ close.”
“Me too, baby,” he admits. It doesn’t surprise him, he’s currently experiencing the hottest moment of his entire existence.
The closer he gets, the more his movements turn clumsier, more desperate– desperate to come, to make Steve come.
It’s when Eddie gives Steve’s shoulder a playful little bite at the same time that he twists his hand on the upstroke that Steve’s back arches and he moans loud and shaky as his cock pulses hotly into his hand.
Steve’s noises as he comes and the way his thighs tighten around Eddie’s cock are enough to bring him over the edge after only a few more thrusts and he paints Steve’s legs with cum.
They lay like that for a few seconds, catching their breath. Eddie starts to drift off, feeling tired and floaty.
“So you think you can fall asleep now?” He asks, breaking the silence.
Steve lets out a soft little giggle. “Yeah, absolutely.”
Eddie grins triumphantly. “Happy to be of service, Your Majesty,” he says with a twist of his cum-covered hand.
Steve’s nose wrinkles as his eyes land on it, but there’s a trace of fond amusement in the look he throws at Eddie over his shoulder. He grabs a handful of tissues from his nightstand and uses them to clean Eddie’s hand and himself before they both shove their boxers back on and get back under the covers.
Eddie rolls to his side. “Before you fall asleep and because I know it’ll keep me up if I don’t ask– was that like, just a hookup or do you like, like me?” He grimaces, burying his face into a pillow. “God, I sound like a twelve year old.”
Steve laughs, but not unkindly. “I like you, Eddie,” he says, and when Eddie lifts his head to look at him, Steve leans in and kisses the corner of his mouth. “Now let’s sleep and we’ll talk more tomorrow.”
Smiling, Eddie nods. That’s fine by him.
Steve turns around, facing away again and Eddie wraps his arm around him, burrowing his face into the back of his neck.
They’re both asleep in a matter of seconds.

Eddie and Steve and their three daughters are sitting around the kitchen table one evening when four-year-old Hazel asks –
“Now that I’m here, are you gonna get married soon?
Steve blinks.
The question isn’t entirely out of left field – not for Hazel, anyway, whose preschool teacher got married a few weeks ago and came back with all kinds of pictures and stories. Apparently, Hazel’s been eating it all up, and she’s their most romantical kid, so to speak, so that’s not really a shock.
Thing is, Eddie and Steve are already married – have been for six years this past May, so…
“Uh, we are married, Hazy-Jay,” Eddie answers before Steve has a chance to say anything.
Hazel’s face falls, her mouth parting.
“Huh?”
Steve inwardly cringes.
“You got married before?” Hazel asks, her chin quivering like she’s only a few moments away from tears (and she’s their most emotional kid too, so she probably is).
“People get married before they have kids, Hazel,” seven-year-old Robbie points out all matter-of-fact.
“Well,” Steve pauses, because, yeah, Robbie is mostly not wrong, but those pesky gay marriage laws had kept him and Eddie from getting married until Massachusetts finally legalized it in ‘04 (when Moe was three and Robbie six-ish months old and Hazel still two years away). He’s pretty sure that level of nuance might be lost on their four-year-old though.
“Not Dad and Papa,” Moe cuts in, “Me and you were there, Robbie.”
“Moe,” Eddie mutters, “Not helping.”
“What?” Moe shrugs, “It’s true!”
Hazel looks positively devastated by this information.
“Why didn’t you wait for me?”
“Well, hon, we didn’t know you were coming,” Steve tries, “We didn’t know any of you were coming!”
“That’s not true,” Moe points out, “You knew about Robbie.”
“Moe,” Eddie hisses.
Steve reaches behind him to snag a framed photo of him and Eddie and Steve and Moe and Robbie all smiling at the camera on the steps of Boston City Hall off the shelf it perches on.
“You know this picture?” he asks as Hazel climbs into his lap. She nods, “This is from the day Dad and I got married.”
“It doesn’t look like a wedding,” Hazel says skeptically, her nose all scrunched up.
“‘Cause it wasn’t really a wedding,” Steve tells her, “We got married at a courthouse in Boston – same courthouse where we adopted you and where we adopted Moe and where we adopted Robbie.”
“Why did you adopted us?”
“Well, you know how sometimes we take emergency foster placements every once in a while and we’ll have a new friend for a few days?”
Hazel nods.
“Dad and I used to do that all the time,” he continues, “and that’s how we met Moe, and so for two years it was just me and Daddy and Moe, and then we found out that you guy’s mom was gonna have another baby, and then we met Robbie.”
“And then me?”
“And then you,” Steve nods, “It was me and Dad and Moe and Robbie for three years, and then one day we found out that your mom had another baby, and that was you.”
Hazel wordlessly mulls this over for a bit, and then she lets out a pensive little sigh.
“If you would’a known about me before, would you wait?”
“To get married? Of course we would’ve waited.”
“And then maybe you would’a had a real wedding?”
“Maybe,” Steve affirms, even though…probably not, because that shit is expensive and, seriously, nothing out there could have prepared Steve for the reality of their college savings goal doubling overnight.
“Where is our mom now?” Hazel then asks.
Moe, helpful as always, cuts in with, “She’s dead now.”
“Moe,” Eddie exclaims for the third time, “Jee-eez, read the room please!”

Surgery Headcanon
How would my favorite Marvel men react to you having surgery.
I'm getting my gallbladder taken out in a couple of weeks, it will be my first surgery ever, so this is 100% self-indulgent. That's part of why I've been so absent this year, I've had an organ rebelling.
Tumblr media
Doctor Stephen Strange
Will ask who your doctor is to see if he knows them. If not, he may send a referral to a trusted former colleague on your behalf. He's not letting you under the knife unless he knows you have a good surgeon.
Will tell you how routine the surgery is if you are starting to worry. Almost a bit blasé about your concerns, after all, bedside manner was never his strong suit as a surgeon. Plus, it really is a routine, laparoscopic procedure. Way less intricate & dangerous than neurosurgery.
1000% will try to micromanage everything once you're at the hospital prepping for or immediately out of surgery. He wants to see your chart. He wants to know what your most recent vitals are. Hell, he may have even asked if he can observe the surgery. Partly, it's him being overprotective, partly it's because he misses being a doctor.
Definitely breaking into the doctor's lounge for the good coffee, not the instant crap in the cafeteria.
After you are home, he will be vigilant about making sure you take your pain meds & will check your incisions to make sure everything is healing well. You are in very safe, if slightly neurotic hands.
Secretly, or not so secretly, enjoying getting to play doctor again to take care of you. Looking forward to when you are well enough that you can play doctor and patient the really fun way.
Tumblr media
Bucky Barnes
May actually be a bigger mess than you are. Thanks to Hydra, medical anything makes his anxiety shoot through the roof. Now piled on top of that, he feels out of control & helpless to make you feel better.
Would have to be physically dragged out of your hospital room, so the hospital staff just lets the whole “visitors hours” thing slide.
The second you wake up, he is by your side asking if you need anything. Probably didn't sleep or even sit down the entire time you were in surgery.
If you even make an odd face, he's asking if you are in pain, and he has become a huge pain in the ass for your nurses.
May have thought about threatening your surgeon about if something went wrong.
Either guard dog mode, or he completely shuts down. There is no in between.
Afraid he's going to break you while you are recovering. Offers to sleep on the floor or on the couch just in case. Doesn't want to let you out of his sight until you are healed.
Tumblr media
Steve Rogers
Tells you over and over how everything will be okay and that you are in good hands.
May tell you stories about how much hospitals and medical stuff has improved since he was so sick before the serum.
Reads up on your surgery and your doctors. He wants to understand as much as he can about what is going on. He probably has more questions for the doctor than you do.
Puts on a brave face for you but secretly will be a little nervous. He hates seeing you sick or in pain, and he can't help but worry a little bit.
Will respect hospital rules but will stay up until the very last minute of visiting hours are over. Knows the names of every nurse and doctor treating you.
Definitely has flowers or a stuffed bear for you as soon as you wake up from surgery.
Dotes on your every need once you are home and watches you like a hawk. The first few days, he doesn't even let you go to the bathroom by yourself. You can't get away with shortcutting your recovery under his eye.
Tumblr media
Sam Wilson
Buys you a cute, silly stuffed version of whatever you are having surgery on to make you laugh. See my new stuffed sad gallbladder plush as reference here.
Tumblr media
All the nurses love him, and he likes to crack jokes with all the staff. Offers to help with anything he can but mostly tries to stay out of their way.
Trying to make you smile all the way until they wheel you to the OR. He doesn't want you to be scared or nervous.
Like Steve, he will put on a brave face but will be nervous once you are in surgery. Lots of pacing back & forth. Lots of trips to the coffee machine.
Takes care of you once you are home but not quite as mother hen as Steve. Will let you judge what is best for you, but will 100% call you out if he sees you doing something the doctor told you not to.
Will also rat you out to your doctor if you don’t follow their instructions. He doesn't want to snitch, but he'd also rather not be the one to scold you.
Tumblr media
Loki
Doesn't like the idea of someone operating on you. Trained surgeon or not, they are still just a simple Midgardian.
Doesn't like the hospital one bit. Comments on the color and decor, even the hideous hospital gown you have to wear. Partly to make you laugh, partly because it was all truly hideous.
If your surgeon even hesitates on a question you ask, Loki will assume they aren't the best and demand another doctor. You may have to talk him down a bit. He's a prince, after all, and he wants to make sure you are in the best hands possible.
The whole thing seems a bit barbaric to him. He would much have preferred using magic or Asgardian ways to heal you, but alas when on Midgard.
Secretly terrified something will happen to you, but would never tell you he's worried. Doesn't like that he can't do anything to help you.
Is not very used to taking care of people, and as royalty, he's the one used to being waited on, but he will try his best to do whatever you need him to do.
Will probably mostly ignore instructions from the doctor so you are in charge of that part of your care, but he will beg to accelerate your healing with his magic if he can.
Tumblr media
Eddie Brock & Venom
Venom brings you chocolates, which he then eats after you tell him he can, and says not to worry because if the doctors don't take proper care of you he will bite off their heads and eat their brains.
Eddie is nervous but trying to be brave, so you won't be scared. It doesn't help that Venom keeps telling Eddie not to make you nervous, which then, in turn, makes him nervous. He will try to make jokes and keep you entertained however he can.
Eddie and Venom try not to argue while they wait for you to get done with surgery. The last thing you need is to wake up and find out that they ended up in the psych ward for talking to/arguing with themselves in the waiting room. They are on their best behavior.
Both of them try to wait on you hand and foot after you get home. You've had to eat several well-meaning but truly gross breakfasts in bed so as not to disappoint either of them. They mean so well, but neither of them can cook beyond tater tots.
You have woken up to Venom staring at you because “one of us has to watch you at all times until you are recovered”. He took that 100% seriously. He has also stuck tendrils under the bathroom door like cat paws.
One great thing about Venom is the fact that thanks to his tendrils, he can literally get anything you need from around the apartment in seconds without you or Eddie having to get up. This makes him one of the best nurses ever. All you have to do is hint that you want something and boom, it's there.

Stretch Zone Part 2
Hi everybody! I'm back with the next part of my Yoga Steve Steddie AU. I've decided to call it Stretch Zone as a bit of a teacher joke 😅
Still not sure where this is going or if it will go further, but I will be officially starting a tag list after this installment so if you want to be added let me know if the comments or tags.
Part 1
------
Despite his best efforts, Robin does not come with him next week to Chrissy’s yoga class. He tried to tell her, many times, that Chrissy was totally into her but she was impervious to his completely air-tight proof.
“She asked if I was your boyfriend and totally lit up when I said I wasn’t. She totally wants to get with you, Robbie”
“First of all, gross. Second of all, that is not proof of anything.”
So he came alone this week. Mostly, it’s the same thing as the first class but instead of introductions, they just get right into the exercises. Chrissy is a good teacher. Kind, patient, and always giving alternative ways to do the poses for people who want more or less difficulty. Of all the girls Robin has liked, she’s definitely Steve’s favorite and he’s determined to play wingman.
Chrissy always leaves enough time after class for everyone to mill around and clear up their stuff, which leaves Steve plenty of time to meddle.
“Hey Chrissy!” he calls out, jogging a little to reach her before any of the vultures do. Chrissy is a cute girl and he thinks more than one of the guys here are more interested in her than mindfulness. Probably some of the girls, too. “I wanted to thank you for the links you sent me. This mat is much better than the one they loaned me at the desk.” He says a little louder than is probably necessary, but he wants the vultures to hear and think that he’s already got an in with the pretty blond.
“Oh, no problem Steve, I was happy to help,” she says. She really is tiny, he finds himself thinking. Steve himself isn’t the tallest guy around but she has to tilt her head all the way up to look him in the eye. She’s going to look so cute next to Robin, speaking of which. “I didn’t see Robin this week. Was she not able to make it?” Steve once again curses Robin’s stubborn streak. Chrissy was very clearly hoping to see the other girl today.
“Nah, she decided it wasn’t for her. I don’t know if you saw, but she’s kind of clumsy,” Steve admits. “She told me to say hi though. She’s always talking about how great your ideas are for your writing class. I think she said something about peer editing? I don’t know,” he says with faux nonchalance. Robin most certainly did not ask him to pass on a hello and she would be mortified to know that the previously anonymous peer edits she submitted for Chrissy’s last paper are not so anonymous anymore. Steve would feel bad, Robin was definitely effusive with her praise, but if he’s right about this whole situation then Robin will thank him later.
“Oh! Robin was my editor last week? I didn’t know that! That review was so thoughtful and kind I was wondering who it was. I’ll have to thank her in class tomorrow,” she says with a bright, excited smile.
Robin is going to owe him big time.
Mission accomplished, Steve becomes aware that he’s taken up a good chunk of Chrissy’s time and there is a small pod of people awkwardly loitering around, probably waiting to ask questions that are actually yoga-related. One guy in particular is boring holes into Steve’s head like it’s his damn job, which is…well, it’s a little uncomfortable but Steve can appreciate he’s being kind of annoying taking up all the instructor's attention.
He says his goodbyes to Chrissy and turns to leave, catching that guy’s eyes again and sending him a little wave and sheepish smile. He might as well try and be friendly; they’re going to be in this class together for the next two months, after all. To Steve’s mild relief, it seems to snap the guy out of his single-minded glaring. He watches as the guy blinks hard and turns a charming shade of pink, clearly embarrassed to be acknowledged, and give a little wave back.
The guy is kind of cute, in a wet cat kind of way. He’s wearing black sweatpants and a shirt for some band Steve doesn’t recognize with the sleeves cut off and despite the fact that he’s got long, curly hair he clearly didn’t bring any kind of hair tie because the whole thing has become one tangled, sweaty mess. He’s not the kind of guy Steve would expect to be taking yoga classes, but he supposes anyone can get into this kind of stuff.
With one last look at the strange man, Steve continues toward the door, mind once again turned toward making sure Robin is prepared to talk to Chrissy on Monday.
—---
Eddie can not believe this is his life.
Of all the things he thought he would do one day - write an award-winning song, buy his uncle Wayne a better trailer in a better town, find a man to take his virginity - yoga was never on the list.
Eddie Munson is not, and has never been, the kind of guy to do exercise that didn’t involve running away from jocks and preps he’d annoyed to the point of violence. In fact, he’s been adamant that he would only ever do recreational exercise of the non-sexual variety when the sun fell out of the sky and Andy Johnson from high school professed his undying love to him.
Neither thing has happened as of yet but unfortunately, his best friend is the surprisingly cunning Chrissy Cunningham, who is determined to make Eddie into a healthier person. Chrissy, a bonafide jock but also the kindest person on planet Earth, has tried every trick in the book to get her best friend to commit to a better lifestyle, but Eddie has always been stubborn to a fault. Even he can admit that his dedication to cigarettes, microwave meals, and general sloth is not the best way to ensure he lives a long, healthy life, but old habits die hard and he’s still too young to be thinking about his inevitable death.
No amount of pleading, cajoling, or petty theft from his apartment has gotten Eddie to commit to anything for more than a week, but Chrissy isn’t his best friend for nothing. She knows him better than anyone and that means she knows that Eddie is proud to a fault and when presented with a challenge he can’t - won’t - turn it down. She traps him into a bet he can’t win and in all her cruelty, she demands that he sign up for her three-month yoga course at the rec.
Three months.
Eddie won’t make it.
Eddie definitely won’t make it if the absolute snack of a man diagonal from him doesn’t start wearing something other than the tightest pair of yoga pants known to man. Seriously, Eddie thought this would be bad enough when all he had to worry about was his stiff joints and complete lack of lung capacity and then this man had the gal to walk in and set up not 10 feet away.
From the front, it had been bad enough. Droopy puppy eyes, sweet moles, a strong nose, and a fit body. And, well, Eddie is not a creep. He isn’t. But there is also an adonis of a man standing right in front of him wearing yoga pants and it’s kind of hard not to look at what's right in front of him. Much to his dismay, or relief he can’t tell, the adonis seems to know what he’s doing and has worn the correct undergarments to keep everything from flopping around.
And then he turned around and…
Dear god.
Those pants can not be fucking legal.
Eddie spent the entire class trying not to stare like the creep he swears he isn’t and failing. His only saving grace is that he doesn’t fall on his face, but it’s a near thing, especially when Chrissy guides them into these weird lunges that make the back of Eddie’s thighs burn and the man of his dream’s ass look completely biteable. He swears Chrissy is torturing him on purpose. She’s probably trying to get him back for being such a brat about taking care of himself.
When the class finally lets out 45 agonizing minutes after it started, Eddie feels like a wrung dish towel. He’s sweaty and gross and he’s going to be aching in places he didn’t even know existed until next week when he has to do it all again. Seriously, fuck bets.
When he finally summons the will to sit up, he is once again treated to the sight of the most fabulous ass this side of the Mississippi. The equally gorgeous man attached to it is chatting to Chrissy, something about yoga mats that Eddie doesn’t care to understand and general pleasantries that he tunes out until his brain hooks on something interesting.
Robin.
As in Robin Buckley the girl from Chrissy’s writing class that his best friend has been crushing hard on for weeks.
Very interesting indeed.
But he can think about that later. At the moment, he is more concerned with getting off the floor and shuffling a little closer to the front of the room for a better look at his future husband’s face. There’s something pleasant about the shape of his mouth, a thought Eddie has never had about a person before but is nonetheless true. There’s a curve to his smile that is present even as he speaks. Eddie kind of wants to kiss his teeth. He’s so caught up seeing if he can count all the moles on the man’s neck that he doesn’t notice him turn toward Eddie until he’s wiggling his fingers in a little wave.
Eddie is suddenly reminded that staring at another man’s moles in the middle of a yoga studio is not socially acceptable behavior, and this man definitely saw him doing just that. He can feel all the blood in his body rush to his face in record time. This is definitely the most embarrassing moment of his adult life.
Helpless to do anything else lest he look like even more of a freak, he gives a little wave back, feeling supremely stupid as he does. The guy gives him one last look before walking out the door.
As soon as he’s gone Eddie collapses back onto his abandoned mat and covers his eyes with his hands, too mortified to face the world. He doesn’t care if there are still other people lingering around talking to Chrissy and cleaning up their mats, he kicks his feet into the air and groans loud and long. Let Chrissy deal with the weird looks for him, this is her fault anyway.
A couple minutes later the room dims even more as Chrissy looms over him. He refuses to take his hands away from his face, not wanting to deal with her no doubt smug face.
“See something you liked?” She asked, unperturbed by Eddie’s childish behavior.
Eyes still closed, he says, “You’re going to hell. This is best friend abuse.”
Chrissy just laughs.

uhhh.... i was going to keep these all real small to get through them but... shit happens OKAY HERE YOU GO
steddie | G | 700 | pinky swear
Tumblr media
It is 3:43am when Eddie wakes up the first time, his hand abruptly leaving Steve’s and waking him with the movement.
“Eddie?" he croaks, "Eddie! Hang on, hang on, let me–” He reaches over Eddie’s head to press the call button, settling back into his chair. “You with me, Munson?”
“Ste…? He wheezes
Duh. “Shit, water. Here..” he grabs the nearest cup, hoping Eddie doesn’t mind the now lukewarm remnants of melted ice from his dinner. “Better?”
Eddie gulps loudly, then winces at the pull in his cheek. “What happened?”
“You were an idiot, that’s what.” Steve says, peppering in only a little bit of the heat he’d put behind the same words earlier in Eddie’s stay, “What’d I tell you? Not to throw yourself into danger?”
“I believe your words were ‘Don’t try to be cute.’, which, frankly, I don’t need to try at....”
Steve blinks at him, “Wow.. only awake for three minutes and you’re already making me wish I’d left you down there.”
“You don’t mean that.” Eddie smiles, waving an arm at him and wincing again.
“Sure I don’t.”
“In fact, if I continue to recall correctly, I was promised a milkshake if I made it out alive.”
“You–” he starts, but is interrupted by the nurse bustling in to check Eddie over.
Eddie continues to blink slowly up at the ceiling after she’s gone.
“You remember that?”
“Hm?”
“About the milkshakes?”
Eddie turns his head to look over at him and his soft smile falls, “Don’t feel obligated, Harrington, I know you were just trying to keep me awake.”
“What do you remember?”
He looks back up at the ceiling. “Dustin crying, him yelling your name, Nancy jabbing her cold, tiny fingers into my neck, a lot of pain mostly.”
“What else?”
Eddie’s eyes find him again, confused more than anything. “Not much; I don’t remember being picked up, but I remember that I was.. And then you telling me that you’d buy me the biggest milkshake you could find and the biggest, sloppiest kiss to go alo–”
The look of dawning realization is quickly taken over by horror. He rolls his head straight again and squeezes his eyes shut.
“Jesus Christ…”
“Eddie–”
“Any possibility of getting outta here tonight? I’d really like to get thrown back down there with the bats now.”
“Would a regular kiss be okay?”
Eddie’s head whips around so fast he hits his injured cheek on his own shoulder. “Ow–fuck– what did you just say?”
Steve scoots to the edge of his seat, leaning up closer to Eddie’s face.
“Just for now, I mean. I’d rather do our making out somewhere other than a hospital bed.”
“...Huh??”
Steve sighs, hanging his head for a moment, then picking it up again to explain it all.
“You were dying right there on the concrete, Eddie. And when we finally got to you and I picked you up, you would not stop talking.
“Which was good, that’s how I knew you were still with us.. And you started telling me how you’d always wanted to go out with me–”
“Oh Jesus Christ–” Eddie tries to cover his face with both his hands, but Steve captures the IV-addled one in his, leaving Eddie only the other to cover his eyes.
“--take me to a movie and kiss me in the back row, take me to Benny’s and share a milkshake with me.. So I told you that if you made it out, I’d get you the biggest milkshake I could find,”
“‘And the biggest sloppiest kiss to go along with it.’ Eddie quotes back at the same time Steve does.
For a few breaths after that, Eddie doesn’t say anything, so Steve continues.
“So… will a regular kiss do for now?”
Another breath later, Eddie peeks out from between his fingers.
“You’ll get the other two after you’re out of here, I swear.”
“Do you pinky swear?” He finally asks, sticking his pinky into the air from where his hand still lays on his face.
Steve snorts a laugh and reaches up to grab Eddie’s little finger in his, “Pinky swear.”
Eddie’s lips are chapped as all hell, but Steve couldn’t care less.

Part One Seventeen
TW for biological functions I guess? In a fantasy setting? And brief mention of blood.
“Stee,” something nudges Steve, rocking him a little, and then there’s another, whispered but urgent, “Stee.”
Steve blinks the rest of the way awake, squinting in the morning light, “you okay?”
“No. Ow.”
Steve’s all the way alert immediately, “where? What’s wrong?”
Eddie takes Steve’s hand, pressing it real low on his tummy, “ow.”
“Oh,” Steve says, leaning over and pressing a little bit.
Eddie immediately seems to panic, dragging Steve’s hand away and shoving one of his own right up between his legs, pressing hard. He looks uncomfortable as fuck.
“Oh! Baby, do you need to pee?”
“Called pee?”
“I-it’s when- you know what never mind, just come with me.” Eddie comes with Steve into the bathroom, and Steve shuffles him over to the toilet, “you need to pull your pants down.”
Eddie looks at him uncertainly.
“Here, these,” Steve gives Eddie’s sleep pants a tug, and Eddie soon joins in on pulling them down. “Uhm,” Steve says intelligently, faced again with that slit between Eddie’s legs, “I didn’t...I guess you should sit?”
Steve guides Eddie down, and he perches on the toilet.
“Now just, relax I guess? Let it happen?”
“Stee,” Eddie says, plaintive and confused and clearly fucking uncomfortable.
Steve squats in front of his knees, which is so new it takes Steve by surprise all over again, and he rests a hand on Eddie’s brand new bare knee, just because he can. Just to feel it under his palm, smooth and...maybe there's a little stubble growing on Eddie's thigh. He uses his free hand to gently press at Eddie’s lower stomach.
Eddie yelps, grabbing Steve’s hand away, “ow ow ow ow ow,” Eddie’s bloodshot eyes water, and then there’s a splash and very loud and insistent stream of urine that goes on for quite some time. Eddie’s breath is shuddering throughout, his eyes squeeze closed and he grips Steve’s hand and shoulder desperately.
It’s finally done, and Eddie's left panting, “many ow. Many.”
“Uhm...it doesn’t usually, maybe because it was the first one? No ow next time?”
“Next time?” Eddie repeats, sounding distraught.
“Yeah, sorry baby. Pee a few times a day.”
“Called few?”
“Few...not many.”
Eddie sighs through his nose, kind of relieved by the news, “not many.”
“Just wait until you gotta’ poop.”
“Called poop?”
“I-it’s- you know what, lets just cross that bridge when we get there.”
When Eddie stands, pulling his pants back up, still a little uncertain on his feet, the toilet bowl looks like it’s full of blood. Steve drops the lid and flushes it away, trying desperately not to worry that Eddie’s kidneys are like, failing, or something. “Yeah, hopefully the next one will be okay, like with what you coughed up...you should probably drink plenty of water today.” It’s not like they can get Eddie to a doctor.
“Water,” Eddie repeats, “brush teeth?”
“Yeah baby, we can brush our teeth.”
Eddie does, standing next to Steve. Steve watches them both in the mirror, but Eddie appears to, mostly, be frowning at himself. Once he rinses, he touches where his eyebrows were, then runs a hand over the top of his head. “Different. No hair. No Eddidie.”
“Oh baby,” Steve reaches out, touching gently, “hey, there’s a little bit of stubble, here, feel,” Steve guides Eddie’s hand. The first sign of hair is so minute as to be not visible yet, but Steve can definitely feel it, “your hair will come back.”
“Tomorrow?” Eddie asks, more hopeful.
“No baby...it’ll take some time,” Eddie pouts, “but it will.”
By the time they get back to the bedroom, Eddie is pulling a face, “wet,” he tells Steve, pulling at the crotch of the sleep pants.
“Oh...right. I guess we’d better wipe next time, hang on, I’ll get you a clean pair.”
“Clean pair,” Eddie parrots back, sitting on the bed, all long flailing limbs. He struggles a little, getting tangled, but he doesn’t ask for help, so Steve just waits and watches; he’s going to have to get the hang of this at some point. “Breakfast food?”
“Sure thing.”
Eddie stands, and his pants immediately fall down. Eddie looks down at them, pooled around his ankles on the floor, “pull pants down.” Steve can’t help but laugh.
Eddie’s pouting, but Steve can tell it’s good humored, a little smile hidden underneath. Eddie hasn’t changed at all; still just happy to be involved. Happy that he’s made Steve laugh.
“Okay, lesson one I guess,” Steve goes and stands next to Eddie, “come on, you can get them.”
He’s awkward in his movements, and Steve stands close to make sure he doesn’t like, fall over and face plant or anything, but Eddie manages to bend and grab them, and then pull them back up, clutching at the material.
Steve pulls the drawstring cords tight for him, tying it securely, “all my stuff it going to be way too big for you.”
“Too big.”
Eddie sits on the stairs, and Steve waits half way down. He sits for a second, looking at Steve, thoughtful. And then he stands back up, both hands awkwardly gripping the rail, “oh boy,” Steve sighs, “okay, but carefully.”
“Carefully,” Eddie hovers a bare foot out, wobbling. It takes him a second to coordinate bending his knee, and his foot lands on the next step with a thump. Steve never really thought about how much easier up is than down, but it definitely is.
Eddie gets a rhythm going, still white knuckling the rail, but they get there, and he’s much more confident by the time he gets to the bottom.
Steve looks at the sad contents of his fridge and sighs. He’s not giving Eddie a cold bowl of cereal, he’s not doing it.
“Wait there,” he heads into the garage, rummaging through the freezer. He comes up with a couple of frozen pizzas, and prays he’s not setting a bad precedent with pizza for breakfast...but then it occurs to him what day it is, and he thinks fuck it, it is Christmas.
Steve gets both pizzas in, dealing with the pot of peas they had abandoned on the stove top last night.
Steve makes himself a coffee and Eddie another glass of water; Eddie looks at it mistrustfully, and Steve figures Eddie has already made the link between drinking and peeing, “you need to,” Steve tells him, pushing the glass closer.
Eddie sighs like a man going in front of the firing squad, but he does sip it.
“Pizza good good good,” Eddie says, licking his fingers clean of cheese grease.
“Yeah, I like it too. You done?”
“Done?”
“Finished?”
Eddie looks sad, “no yes,” and rubs his tummy.
“I get that,” Eddie has half his Pizza left, and Steve three slices of his, “but we can eat the rest later.”
Eddie perks up, “lunch?”
“Yeah, we can eat it at lunch time. You want to see what’s on TV?”
“TV.” Eddie stands up, determined. Steve watches; Eddie uses any furniture in reach, and then the wall, to make it to the kitchen doorway. He stands for a second, faced with the gulf between the doorway and the couch. Slowly, and a little uncertain, Eddie makes the trip.
He sits, and Steve watches it dawn on him that he needs to get back up again to turn on the TV. The sigh that comes out of Eddie is spectacular, but he gets up, and he does it.
Steve feels like he just watched Eddie sink a winning basket, or something.
Eddie’s fallen asleep again, Steve can feel it in how his breathing has evened, how his body is lax. They’d watched 'A Wonderful Life' this morning. Granted they missed the first little bit, and Steve is sure Eddie didn’t really follow the plot, but Steve just...couldn’t resist it.
Clarence earns his wings, Eddie got his legs.
Eddie had finished his pizza at lunch time, and had more water, but only because Steve bribed him with half a beer for afters. And then came Eddie’s second ever pee; almost clear this time, with maybe the faintest trace of pink. To say Steve was relieved is an understatement.
Steve figures he’s right, just like with the crap that came out of Eddie’s lungs, there must be some sort of trauma when it comes to using body parts that are brand spanking new.
Steve’s not really watching the TV any more; there’s another Christmas movie on, something about Prancer the reindeer. It makes nice background noise as Steve decides Eddie has the right idea and allows himself to doze.
He’s very nearly asleep when the phone rings, startling both Steve and Eddie awake.
Steve’s halfway up, Eddie flopping off him onto the couch when it hits Steve; he hasn’t told anyone. Shit.
He answers the phone, already half certain the it’s Robin, “Hello?”
“Hey,” it is Robin, “look, Steve, I know you said no and everything but I’m really worried about you, and it's Christmas so I really don’t think-”
Steve cuts her off, “Eddie’s fine. He’s here he-”
“What??!”
“Yeah, he, he came out of the pool last night. He’s like, completely fine.” Steve smiles as Eddie appears in the doorway, one hand resting on the wall.
“So he’s just- alright? Like, what happened then, why..?”
“Oh. Oh shit, no he has legs Rob!”
She squeaks down the phone, “legs!”
Eddie moves closer, careful steps that are already about a million times more confident than yesterdays, “called?”
“It’s Robin, you want to say hi?”
“Birdidie.”
Steve hands the phone over, watching as Eddie holds it to his ear, “hi Birdidie.”
Steve can hear the noise Robin makes, it’s so loud, Eddie completely startles, dropping and then fumbling the phone and nearly stumbling himself. Steve manages to grab Eddie by the tops on his arms to steady him, and then takes the phone back, he can vaguely hear Robin saying, “hello? Are you still there?”
“Sorry, Robs, you just scared him a little.”
“Okay, yeah, okay yeah that’s fair. Sorry. Can I come over? I should come over-” and Steve cannot blame her at all, but he does kind of wish their little bubble had lasted a tiny bit longer.
“Okay Robs, I’ll see you soon?”
“Yup yup Mom will drop me, I’ll bring left overs!”
Eddie sits with his legs pulled up, trying to tuck them under himself like he would his tail; it isn’t really working.
“Birdidie in?” He asks looking distinctly uncomfortable, plucking at the frayed edge at the bottom of his sweater.
“Yeah, Robin's coming to visit.” Eddie looks distinctly unhappy at the prospect. “What’s wrong? You don’t want Birdy?”
“Eddidie-” he starts and the stalls out, “Birdidie good bad.”
“Okay, can you tell me why?”
“No Eddidie,” he says, a hand going to the top of his head.
“Oh...you’re worried about you hair?” Eddie nods, “baby, no ones going to care.” Eddie just looks, if possible, even more downhearted, “but you care, don’t you?”
Eddie nods.
“Okay. Okay I can sort this, wait there.” Steve heads upstairs, raiding his mother’s wardrobe. It’s arranged by season and then occasion, so all of her ‘skiing’ – drinking too much in a lodge – outfits are all clumped together. Steve finds three hats, they’re all bobble hats and all distinctly feminine, but Steve takes them to show Eddie. On his way out, his eyes catch on the jewelry box.
All the rings in here are probably too small to fit Eddie properly, but Steve takes a plain silver band that might fit Eddie’s pinkie finger. He takes his haul back down stairs, kneeling in front of Eddie where he’s sitting on the couch.
Steve lays out the three hats across Eddie’s thighs, “okay, here we go, what do you think.”
“Called?”
“It’s a hat,” and then Steve commits a personal cardinal sin, he pulls one on to demonstrate.
Eddie seems to brighten as he understands, touching each one individually. He chooses the one Steve hoped he would, it’s the subtlest of all of them, black and white herringbone with a black edge and a grey faux fur pompom, which Eddie quite likes the softness of if his stroking is anything to go by. He pulls it on, smiling, “hat good.”
Steve reaches into his pocket, pulling out the little silver trinket he found, “and this.”
Eddie brightens again, touching the ring where it lays on Steve’s palm. He clearly wants to say something, his mouth opening and closing, but he doesn’t have the words. Eventually he points to the lights on the tree, opening and closing his hand to imitate the slow blinking of the lights.
“Those are lights...they're shiny,” Steve tilts his palm, the ring catching the light, “this is shiny.”
“Shiny...good.”
“Pretty”
“Called pretty?”
“Uhm...so if something looks...good. So if you like shiny lights,” Steve points, “or…” Steve struggles through Eddie’s known vocabulary, “trees, trees can be pretty.” He touches Eddie’s sweater, “blue, pretty blue.”
“Purple more good than blue,” Eddie informs him with some certainty, making Steve laugh.
“Okay, purple pretty,” Eddie nods, “so, you want this on,” Eddie gives his left hand over easily. His fingers are actually much slimmer than Steve had really anticipated, and the ring spins loosely on Eddie’s pinkie finger. Steve moves it to the one next door, where it fits well, snug against the last vestiges of Eddie’s webbing, “okay?”
Eddie leans forward to kiss Steve, “thank you Stee.”

for @thefreakandthehair (and @vecnuthy and @wormdebut while we’re at it) because sometimes you help a baseball player through French class so they can stay on the team and then they end up on the Savannah bananas and you decide to put the fictional men into situations about it *shrugs*
Eddie was going to have to transfer out of this class. This was one of his easiest classes and it was filled with every jock on campus attempting to fill their foreign language requirement with French.
And they were all failing. And annoying. And obnoxious.
And a few of them were also hot.
But Eddie wasn’t gonna focus on that!
He was gonna finish today’s assignment and then head straight to the advising office to find another class that worked with his work schedule.
“Hey,” the guy next to him whispered as the teacher droned on about conjugating verbs. “Do you have any idea what the fuck the homework was?”
Eddie turned to glare at the person, but his face dropped when he noticed who it was.
The campus celebrity: Steve Harrington.
Couldn’t quite make it on the college baseball team, but managed to make the sort-of professional, but mostly joke team Hawkins Hooligans.
Eddie didn’t like sports, never had. He could appreciate that it took skill and whatnot, but he didn’t care much to watch it or make celebrities of people who were just really good at one very specific thing usually involving some kind of ball. But he could appreciate a joke. And this team had jokes.
Steve was actually apparently good enough to play pro, had even been scouted by the MLB his senior year of high school. One week before his professional tryout, he tore a muscle in his shoulder, had to sit for three months and had to do physical therapy for another three, and voila! No pro ball for him. No college either since he missed spring training.
But he still had skill, and he still had a father with a lot of pull in the business, even if it wasn’t quite enough to get him on the Yankees or whatever.
So he was biding his time on the Hooligans until next year when he could try out for the college team again, maybe increase his chances of a real pro career.
Eddie definitely hadn’t watched videos of him during their first few games of the season where they faced the Indy Idols and the Chicago Charades.
He definitely hadn’t gotten a weird flutter in his stomach when Steve had been the one to lip sync to Hot For Teacher while pretending his bat was a guitar.
He definitely didn’t have a crush on Steve.
“Uh. Dude?” Steve asked him again, shaking him out of his thoughts.
“Yeah. It was the study guide for the first quiz. Not due until next class though,” he whispered back.
“Oh. Thanks.”
Eddie turned his attention back to the professor, not really needing to pay attention since he already knew quite a bit of French.
A tap on his shoulder made him yelp, and the entire room turned to him. He waved apologetically before turning to Steve with a murderous look.
“What?” He hissed out.
“Do you understand this?”
“Yes and you probably would too if you stopped talking to me.”
Eddie was ignoring the voice in his head screaming at him to let Steve keep talking to him for as long as he wanted.
“I don’t think that’s it,” Steve huffed before sitting back in his seat and folding his arms across his chest. He mumbled something else that sounded like ‘I’m just stupid’ but Eddie couldn’t be 100% sure.
“A lot of this stuff is just English spelled a little differently.” Eddie sighed. “You could almost definitely figure it out if you took some notes.”
“Yeah, probably.”
Eddie’s brows scrunched together as he glanced at Steve’s red face.
Hm. There was definitely something to unpack here.
“You can borrow mine if you want,” Eddie offered as he watched the professor switch slides on the presentation. “I don’t really need them until the final.”
“Oh!” Steve sounded genuinely surprised by his offer, like he hadn’t been basically asking for help only a moment ago. “You don’t have to do that. I mean, it wouldn’t do much good for me anyway.”
“What do you mean?” Steve had Eddie’s full attention now.
“I’m. I-“ Steve sighed. “I’m dyslexic, man. Reading’s hard for me.”
Well, fuck. Eddie felt like an asshole now.
“Oh.” Eddie looked down at his scribbled notes, cringing at the thought of someone else trying to read them, let alone someone who already struggled with reading from a printed page. “Yeah, my handwriting is shit so it’d probably be useless to you. Shit, it’s almost useless to me.”
Steve snorted, immediately covering his mouth to avoid any more noise from escaping. Eddie could see he was still smiling though. His eyes were very expressive.
“Don’t you have accommodations?” Eddie asked him.
“Nah, my dad doesn’t believe it’s a problem.” Steve rolled his eyes. “Said I just need to focus more and it’ll ‘work itself out.’”
“He sounds like he’s a lot of fun at parties.”
Steve snorted again. “Yeah, a blast.”
“So you aren’t a natural at French?”
Steve shook his head. “I’m barely a natural at English.”
“I could help you?” Eddie was an idiot. An idiot with a crush on someone who would never be interested in anything he had to offer except tutoring.
“Help me? You’d help me?” Steve seemed eager, maybe a little desperate.
Eddie kinda liked that.
“I mean, yeah. If you’re actually willing to put in the work and not expect me to just do the work for you.”
Steve smiled. God, that was a nice smile. Eddie was absolutely fucked.
“I work well with a reward system,” he smirked. “If you’re willing.”
Eddie’s eyes widened momentarily as the realization sunk in that he’d just been flirted with.
By Steve Harrington.
“Oh, I can definitely work with that.”
Steve nodded once, grinned at Eddie as he picked up his pen and ripped off a small piece of his unused notebook paper. He scribbled something down and folded it once before handing it to Eddie.
“Let me know when I need to show up, Eds.”
Eddie unfolded the paper and nearly dropped it.
Stevie H. 555-555-0086 My dorm at 7? No clothes required
When Eddie looked back up, Steve was facing the front, seemingly paying attention to the lecture.
Eddie quickly pulled his phone from his pocket and put Steve’s contact info in. He could wait until after class to send him a text. He could.
Instead, he typed out something quick to hold them both over until later.
Studying naked is my favorite thing 😉
Steve’s knee nudged against his in response.
Maybe Eddie wouldn’t take that trip to advising after all.
And if he was featured on the next TikTok for the Hawkins Hooligans, with Steve fake serenading him in the stands, nobody had to know he didn’t really like sports.
He liked Steve, though. Even when Steve actually managed to play real competitive baseball. Even when Steve managed to get a spot on the Cubs.
Especially when Steve proposed to him during a game in maybe the worst recorded French of all time.

Not gonna make this into a full fic, I don't think, but here's a little something I was thinking of <3 Mild hurt, mostly comfort, and a lot of Eddie getting ready to jump some bones
Steve's upset—and he believes rightfully so. Today was the day for a little bit of a trim and clean up on his hair. He booked his appointment a couple weeks before, for early in the morning right before lunch, with the same stylist he's had since his junior year of high school; the same stylist his mom sees because they're connected at the hip over the meticulous care of their heads of hair. He isn't called 'The Hair' for nothing.
Except, when he walked right up to the front counter, said his name with a shiny, charming smile, and a twinkle in his eyes—
"I'm sorry, Cherry's not in today. Flu's running rampant through her household. Tellin' ya, honey, kids are germ magnets." And the receptionist had popped her gum, whipped her hair over her shoulder, bat her eyes. "But I could hand you over to Gina? She's well trusted around her, real close with Cherry and her clients."
Of course, panicked to the soles of his shoes, Steve had blindly accepted the pass over. He thought it wouldn't be too much of a change. He thought that he could trust another pair of scissors. Well...no dice, apparently.
It's supposed to be the same thing he gets every single time. A clipping of Patrick Swayze from one of those tweeny girl magazines—he had stolen it from Erica, thank you very much—and maybe it's not supposed to be an exact replica to his gorgeous head of hair, but at least something similar. Maybe a little longer in the back, more of a swoop in the front.
Except, when he catches wind of himself in the mirror at the end of his appointment—Christ, I look like fucking Kurt Russell. He didn't even think his hair had grown out that long. Especially not Escape From New York long.
He smiles, words bit behind his teeth, and tips his normal amount. Pays for it in full without a single damn complaint. Even though he nearly bursts into tears when he gets to his car. And then, even worse, when he realizes he has to walk back through the front door of the apartment he shares with Eddie and look his boyfriend dead in the eyes. But he does so begrudgingly, every step as if it's his last.
When he opens the door, Eddie's already standing there, big grin on his face, eyes alight. "Did you get exactly what you"—
"They fucked up my hair, Eds! My hair!"
Eddie tilts his head and purses his lips, assessing the damage. "It doesn't look bad, sweetheart. Maybe a little more...more free and flowing than you prefer, but not fucked up levels of messed up."
He steps inside with a ginger door shut behind him. Doesn't want to be caught in full throttle tears on his doormat. His eyes get a little watery the longer Eddie stares at him. "But I look like fuckin' Kurt Russell, not Patrick Swayze," Steve pouts.
"Yeah, that didn't give you what you wanted exactly. But, baby, my sunshine—you really think you look awful? You know how handsome Kurt is? This whole look isn't a step down at all! It suits you pretty well!" Eddie steps towards Steve, shoving forward to paw through the waves and bends of his hair, scrunching it and viewing. "Put a little bit of mousse in it...maybe a tad of your hairspray? We could get this look elevated in a matter of seconds, make you look like a movie star down to the messy forehead strand on a red carpet."
Steve sniffs. Eyes big on Eddie's face—Eddie who isn't laughing or trying to bite back a giggle or open to make fun of it all. Just...just Eddie admiring. "You think I look handsome like this?"
"I think you're a beautiful babe with a strong mane of hair and you wear fine things well." Eddie shakes his fingers through the hair, messing with it until it falls mussed. "Like a big shot action star. Swear on it. And—hey! You know what?"
"What, Eds?"
"If you end up truly, miserably hating it after we find out how to style it, then I'll help you shape it up just as you like it. I'm sure I've got a few good photos around here that weren't sacrificed to the sun. Well, as long as you trust me with my hair scissors."
"You know how to cut hair?" Steve asks quietly.
"I've been cutting my own hair since I was in middle school. If I wasn't so set in stone on becoming a musician, I'd probably settle into being the next Frenchy, go the whole beauty school route."
He chuckles. "She drops out of beauty school, babe. Don't think that's what you want."
"Eh...maybe I'll go to learn enough about dye and trim jobs and then gallop away into the sunset on my noble steed, you, my princess, wrapped around me." For the first time since the appointment, Steve finds himself smiling—something small, but smiling—and Eddie returns it tenfold. "So...you gonna be my action movie star? Show me how big and strong you are?"
"You gonna keep combing your fingers through my hair?"
Something mischievous sparkles in Eddie's gaze. "Oh, I've got plans for all sorts of things, Stevie baby. Question is, are you gonna let me love you and your handsome do? If not, then we should get this shaped up now."
Steve sighs, dips his head in thought. He could let Eddie get his creativity out on more than just a set of lined notebook pages. But...well...Kurt Russell has been one of the first celebrities to really make Steve stop and think.
And Eddie...
Eddie seems like he'll burst at the seams if he doesn't get to live out whatever number of fantasies are swirling through his head.
"Okay," Steve agrees, purring, "show me how much you love my new look, sweetheart."

Okay, so vampire Eddie is a pretty standard trope at this point, but may I offer...Twilight vampire Eddie who is absolutely pissed off about his sparkly existence?
Eddie actually isn't that old, he was turned in the 80s when he was around 20. He lives with his small and not only vampire family. There's patriarch Wayne, his partner Scott who always becomes a teacher no matter where they move, Claudia Henderson and her son that have been with them ever since Scott noticed Dustin being unusually quiet in his class and soon after, Wayne kicked out his abusive father.
The problem with living with a smart man who loves educating people and a man who never received the education he deserved is - they take school really, really seriously. Whenever they move, Eddie usually has to re-join high school, it's all "just so that you have some socialization! Also we need to be able to blend in, so look around and see what's normal with young people! Also I'm pretty sure some of the stuff we know is now obsolete or disproven, so make sure to tell us!". And Eddie loves Wayne and Scott, he really does, but he had trouble blending in even when he was alive, so now? Impossible. As for gathering information, Eddie has been trying for decades to explain to Wayne that even if becoming a vampire healed the wounds from the lynching mob, it didn't do shit for his ADHD, so there. Wayne finds Eddie banging his head into a desk one day and chanting "WHAT-THE-FUCK-IS-TIK-TOK?!"
So yes, Eddie hates being a forever highschooler, but it also means he can run DnD clubs everywhere he joins and he's not even lynched for it like in the 80s, so hey, progress! He gets mostly content with his existence, except that he's fucking sparkly and can't turn into a bat, so what's the point?!
But then a huge group of people moves from the close town of Hawkins, they had a really fucked up earthquake - Wayne told him all about it, he often volunteered in rescue and high risk works, and he's never seen anything like it - and their little town becomes way more crowded. There are high school freshmen just begging to be introduced to his club, Hellfire, although one of them is scary observant and Eddie is really sure that Jane knows he's a vampire.
And then there's Steve Harrington. A young man with the prettiest hair ever who joined Eddie's class, apparently he needs to repeat the last year too because if your school burns down, you can't take final exams. He's stupidly pretty, snarky, bitchy, and even though he could be partying day and night and spending the rest of his time on dates, he prefers to hang around with the freshmen. Lucas tells him one day that Steve got badly hurt when he was digging through the collapsed middle school, finding and rescuing their whole group, and well...Eddie respects that. Dustin absolutely loves Steve and maybe Eddie feels a bit jealous, but he has to admit - the guy is cool.
The problem with Steve Harrington is this - he's seen so much shit that nothing really fazes him. Eddie loves shocking people. Steve is unshockable. It becomes their little game, they get close, Eddie realizes he has an embarrassing crush, all that jazz. He tries dropping hints, he slurps his bloody lunch from a bottle that has a "THIS IS DEFINITELY TOMATO JUICE AND NOTHING ELSE". He wears a cape. He adopts a horrible Dracula accent. Nothing works. Steve always just laughs and tells him that he's weird and that's why he likes him.
Finally, Eddie has enough. They walk in the woods to get high, Eddie decides to break the ice, he scoops up Steve, does his whole dashing-through-the-woods thing, and he hopes that he can finally share his secret with Steve.
Except Steve just pats his back and says "Wow, that was cool, man! You'd be amazing at track. Great core strength too," and Eddie's head implodes.
"Okay, Steve. Don't you think there's something rotten here?" he tries.
"I mean, it's the woods. Of course there's something rotting all the time."
Eddie tries again. "You've noticed something strange, haven't you. I'm inhumanly fast and strong."
"I sure didn't expect that! You must be secretly training. I didn't know this town had a gym."
Again. "My skin is pale white and ice cold."
Steve is watching a nearby squirrel instead of looking horrified. "Yeah, not all people tan great, Robin is like that too. And I told you, man. Your circulation is shit, you need better socks and some gloves too."
"My eyes change color."
"Yeah, I know, I do envy you that you can wear those cool contact lenses. My eyes are too dry for that."
Eddie is growing desperate, he's gesturing at the trees because Steve doesn't listen. "I speak like I'm from a different time."
"80s slashers will do that to you. You basically live on those. But I gotta admit that they're pretty fun. Oh look, she's got an acorn! Clever girl!"
"Very clever. Also I never eat or drink anything."
"Hey, I'm not judging. Some people prefer one or two meals in a day instead of the whole five meal thing."
Eddie feels like howling and he isn't even a werewolf. "I. DON'T. GO. INTO. THE. SUNLIGHT."
Steve's eyes finally leave the squirrel. "Duh. We've already established you can't tan."
And Eddie's had enough. He tears off his t-shirt, marches directly into the sunlight and throws the biggest tantrum of his life. "STEVEN HARRINGTON. PAY ATTENTION. I am 20. I have been 20 for a while now. You know what I am, right? I am a vampire. So ask me the question, what do we eat? That wasn't a fucking tomato juice Steven!!!"
Steve just watches him with quiet amusement, as if he's waiting for something.
Eddie doesn't notice. His monologue is reaching its most dramatic part. "I've killed people before! I'm the world's most dangerous predator!"
Steve snorts. "I saw you trip over your own feet in the cafeteria."
"Not the point!"
"You told a waitress "you too" when she told you to enjoy your meal."
Eddie actually howls now. "THE POINT IS." He spins in the sunlight and sees the reflections of light off his skin. "I wouldn't have minded becoming a vampire, but let me tell you. Being stuck in high school forever? Sucks. Craving chips and throwing them up whenever you try them? SUCKS. And thinking you've become the legendary creature of the night when you're a glorified glitter mascot?! And you can't even fly?! DOUBLE SUCKS."
He points at his bare glittering chest. "THIS THE SKIN OF A FUCKING DISCO BALL, STEVE!"
Steve just laughs and gets up from the tree stump he was sitting on. "Thanks for sharing. I was kinda hoping you'd finally ask me out since this is the first time we've had some privacy, but this was interesting too."
Eddie's sharing mania suddenly stops. He realizes he's shirtless in the middle of the forest, and his yelling has scared off the squirrel. He promptly grabs his shirt and puts in on. "Um. You...you wanted me to ask you out? Because I totally want to do that. Yep. But I thought it would have been unfair to ask you before I told you-"
"That you're a vampire? Dude, I know."
Eddie blinks once. Then again. "Excusemewhat?"
Steve smiles at him and touches his hand. "Look. After what happened in Hawkins, I know the smell of blood. I knew it wasn't tomato juice. Also I've accompanied the kids to enough monster flicks to know."
"Oh." Eddie licks his lips and doesn't really know what to say. "Um. What...does that mean for us?"
Laughing, Steve grabs his other hand too. "Definitely two things. One - you can and should kiss me. Two - you can stop wearing that cape. I got your point."
"Oh okay. Cool. Will do. Both."
And since Eddie Munson is a vampire of his word, he does.
(Wayne is absolutely delighted that Eddie is dating, he watches sports with Steve and discusses the pros and cons of Steve becoming a paramedic. Scott helps Steve with some of the subjects he's struggling with. In return, Steve works with Robin to find a makeup brand that is fully sparkleproof, giving the vampires a chance to walk in the sunlight again. And sometimes, he helps them answer the questions that have been plaguing the Munson-Clarke-Henderson household for years...such as: what is TikTok?)
(oh and also. Turns out Steve really thought Eddie was wearing creepy contact lenses. That one aspect of vampyrism he found very cool)
