Thomas out with Chris for a night on the town when he gets hit by a sudden onset migraine and Chris finds them a dark back room where Thomas rests against his shoulder as Chris holds a damp cloth that he somehow magicked up - that must have been the part of the conversation with the bartender that Thomas missed while trying to keep his stomach on the inside - and strokes his hair.

Richard working through that throbbing pain over his right eye, holding onto the knowledge that he sees Thomas in a few hours, but when Thomas finally comes to meet him he’s so exhausted he can barely converse. Thomas after a moment of insecurity figuring out the problem before Richard can even explain, and getting them a cup of tea to drink quietly on a park bench, not talking or moving just breathing and taking comforting sips (and quietly passing most of his to Richard after Richard finishes his first cup, so that he doesn’t have to leave his side to fetch him another).

Jimmy trying to get through one of those days where the slight ache in his skull is nothing compared to the way every little noise from footsteps to cutlery clinking to papers rustling and the feel of his clothes against his skin and motions in his peripheral vision make him want to scream, cry, cover his ears and eyes and curl into a ball away from anything touching him - it doesn’t even hurt, not in any way that he could explain, but it makes him want to scrape his brain out with a spoon - when Thomas is suddenly ?checking his forehead and scolding him for not taking a rest ? “Honestly, would you rather be sick for one day or five?” asks Thomas and he’s somehow managed to imply that they talked about it this morning and Jimmy chose to be diligent, which Jimmy can’t believe Carson buys, but now he’s upstairs, alone in his room, his nice quiet room without even any footsteps in the hall because it’s the middle of the afternoon and there’s no one else in the attic and he can close his eyes and undo his horrible horrible collar and breathe until dinner. He’s astonished to find that by the time Thomas comes back up to check on him he’s ready to return to work without screaming, in fact he’s bored enough to want to, because a couple hours of sanctuary have turned the dial on his senses down to normal.

Thomas trying to untangle a scheduling nightmare that has sprung up at Hancock Park and he knows the mounting tension in his head and neck are going to do him in but he just - he has to resolve this, has to get it right, this sort of problem is what he said he’d be here to solve - but Guy asks him so gently to step away from the office and take a break that he does so, and then Guy is stroking his temple and asking if it helps with the tension to have his shoulders rubbed and Thomas is a little embarrassed to admit that he doesn’t know because no one’s ever done it for him- but only a little, and he’s thrilled to discover, with the help of Guy’s gentle hands, that it helps very much to have his shoulders and neck rubbed.

My family have been re-watching Downton from the beginning, which I personally had never seen and had no interest in seeing but since I have been forced to watch it for the past few weeks I have been falling in love with a certain Thomas Barrow, who, if I recall correctly, you are a fan of, right? Please tell me there's more whump out there for his actor 😭? Also, am I right in thinking that Jimmy is Stephen Bonnet? The accent is throwing me off lmao but it looks like him

First of all YES that is indeed Stephen Bonnet from Outlander! That is the same actor. I remember when his casting was announced for Outlander it completely threw me lol.

AND I LOVE THOMAS BARROW!!!!!! Oh my god I am the biggest Thomas Barrow fan. I am happy to tell you that he continues to have a terrible time at Downton Abbey. I don't know where you are right now in the show but here are some of the whumps you can expect:

2x01 he gets shot in the hand during wwi, 2x02 is some good emotional stuff (sobbing), 3x05 is also some good emotional stuff (sobbing), same with 3x06 (emotional stuff), in 3x09 he gets beaten up, 5x01 he gets caught in a house fire, in 5x04 he is sick from an infection, and season 6 the whole season is emotional stuff but 6x08 is the big one where he attempts suicide.

Those are the biggies. He also gets arrested in the first movie and there are a ton of other emotional moments for him throughout the show.

ok u know what that tag WAS bait, thank you for taking it. technically speaking these aren't works dealing strictly with labor in historical fiction, they are my four treasured examples of BUREAUCRAT FICTION (so not NOT about labor in history?) i was gonna try to make this post pithy and short but then i remembered how extremely passionate i am about this microgenre i made up. so sorry.

bureaucrat fiction is not limited by genre or format but criteria for inclusion are as follows: long and detour-filled story about functionary on the outside of society finding unexpected success within a ponderously large and powerful System/exploring themes of class and physicality and work and autonomy and what it means to hold power over others beneath the heartless crushing wheels of empire/sad little man does paperwork. also typically long as hell. should include at least one scene where the protagonist is unironically applauded-perhaps for the first time in their life-for filling out a form really good. without further ado:

soldier's heart by alex51324. the bureaucracy: british army medical corps during wwi. the bureacrat: mean gay footman/new ramc recruit thomas barrow. YEAH it's a downton abbey fic YEAH it's a masterpiece. i've talked about it before at length, my love has not faded. the crowning moment of bureaucracy is a long interlude where thomas optimizes the hospital laundry (this actually happens twice or maybe three times)

hands of the emperor by victoria goddard. the bureaucracy: crumbling fantasy empire some time after magical apocalypse. the bureacrat: passionate late-career clerk from the hinterlands cliopher mdang. i reread this book every winter bc it is as a warm bath for my SAD-addled brain and every time i neglect all my responsibilities to read all nine billion pages in three days. it puts abt 93% of the worldbuilding momentum into elaborating all of the ministries and secretaries and audits necessary to run a global government and like 7% into the magic and stuff. there are also several charming companion novellas and an equally long sequel that dives more into the central relationship between cliopher and the emperor which i highly recommend if you like gentle old man yaoi and/or magic, but there's more bureaucracy in HOTE.

the cromwell trilogy by hilary mantel. the bureaucracy: court of henry viii. the bureaucrat: thomas cromwell, the real guy. curveball! it's critically acclaimed booker prize winning rpf novel wolf hall! mantel is really interested in particular ways of gaining and maintaining power in delicate and labyrinthine systems like the tudor court, specifically in strongmen who use both physical intimidation and metaphysical manipulation to succeed. under these conditions i do think my best friend long-dead historical personage thomas cromwell counts as Bureaucrat Fiction (as do danton and robespierre in a place of greater safety. bonus rec.)

going postal by terry pratchett. the bureaucracy: fantasy postal service of ankh-morpork. the bureaucrat: conman, scammer, and little freak moist von lipwig. this is definitely shorter and lighter than the other three entries on the list, sort of a screwball take on the bureaucrat. but the mail is such a classic bureaucracy thing? who doesn't love thinking about the mail? also contains a key genre element which is a fraught sexual tension with the person immediately above the protagonist in their hierarchy, who is also their god-king and boyfriend-dad. you can't tell me vetinari isn't torturing moist psychologically AND sexually.

anyway sorry about all this. if you've read any of these come talk to me about them. bureaucrat fiction recs welcomed with the openest possible arms.

Fanlore defines canon divergence AU as: a term used in some fandoms for fanfiction set in a universe that diverges relatively narrowly from canon, with a point of departure in a character’s backstory or even during canon. The changes made to canon usually answer a question like “What if character X lived instead of died?” or “What if character Y didn't meet character Z until later?”

The story of Thomas Barrow and Jimmy Kent has so many potential points of departure for canon divergence AUs!

Have you ever wondered what might have happened if the kissing incident had never happened or happened differently? Because we definitely have!

Think about it...

What if Jimmy noticed that Thomas fancied him earlier and took some action? Would that have stopped all the drama or the opposite? Would Jimmy have been interested or not?

What if Thomas had found other ways to let his feelings be known? Would Jimmy then be more sympathetic to his advances or only more confused?

What if the kiss did happen but Alfred never bothered them? What if Miss O’Brien had never interfered at all and none of it happened?

Or, think about this...

What if someone had noticed that something was wrong between Jimmy and Lady Anstruther? Or what if Jimmy had asked someone for help instead of going to her bedroom?

What if Jimmy leaving Downton had gone a little differently? What if he made different choices, or what if it didn’t happen? What if there was no fire and Jimmy got away with going to Lady Anstruther’s room?

What if Thomas decided to make his voice heard as he saw Jimmy off on the day Jimmy left? What if Jimmy had written to Thomas? And what if Jimmy came back at some point and he and Thomas met each other again?

It’s all up to you!

These example ‘what if’ scenarios can serve as inspiration, or you can come up with your own starting point. Maybe you want to pair up with another creator and use the same canon divergence point to each come up with your own stories!

Pick a point in time and a canon divergence, and let your imagination spin a tale of what might happen.

Three ships: Ooh, this is a fun one.  I’ll do my OTP, my favourite ship I don’t actually write for, and one wild card.

OTP: Mystrade, of course!  Mycroft Holmes/Greg Lestrade from BBC Sherlock.  I’ve posted about 250k words of Mystrade fic on AO3 and I’ve got somewhere around 50k more of works in progress sitting in my drive.

Favourite I don’t write for: Thomas Barrow/Guy Dexter from Downton Abbey.  Despite writing 255k for Sherlock and 0k for Downton, DA is my very favourite series in the entire universe.  I didn’t love the second film (Singin’ in the Rain did it better), but I adored Guy and think he and Thomas would be so sweet together. 

Wild Card: Claudine Pascal/Lizzie Wingfield from Hotel Portofino.  No, I have no evidence for this.  No, I will not elaborate.  I just think it would rule.  One of these days, I’ll get around to writing the second fic on AO3 for Portofino (the first one is also me, haha) and it’ll be these two.

First ever ship: I had to dig deep to think of this one.  I think it was Chad Danforth/Ryan Evans from High School Musical, hahaha.

Last song: “Steal Smoked Fish” by the Mountain Goats was the last song I listened to.  A quartet arrangement of “Sentimental Journey,” as made popular by Doris Day and Les Brown, was the last song I sang.

Last movie: I’m on a 1950s kick at the moment.  I just watched Shane for the third or so time and I watched Rebel Without a Cause last week.

Currently reading: I’m actually between books right now, but I just finished Tom Wolfe’s The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, which is a fantastic piece of journalism from the 1960s.

Currently watching: I haven’t technically started it yet, but I’m about to boot up the first episode of The Muppets Mayhem.  Dr Teeth has always been my favorite Muppet (and I love the Muppets), so I’m very excited.

Currently consuming: A piece of gum.

Currently craving: Another half-piece of gum.  But only half a piece.  You know how sometimes one isn’t quite big enough, but two is far too much to chew without hurting your jaw?  Yeah.  That’s what I’m feeling just now.

Barris Winter Festival Announcement!

We're very excited to announce the

Barris Winter Festival of Fanworks 2022/2023!

We're looking forward to a month of Barris-centric goodness, starting on December 26, 2022. Any fanwork that celebrates the beautiful ship that is Thomas Barrow/Richard Ellis will be welcome, long or short, big or small.

Entries can be winter-themed or inspired by the season‘s festivities, but don’t have to be. We'll post some prompts later this week for those of you who enjoy them (or need them to stir the muse into action), but they're not mandatory, either.

There’s no need to sign up in advance. To participate, simply post your work (or a link to your work) on Tumblr and tag this blog, starting on December 26. Or send it in to this blog and we will post it for you. There will also be a collection on AO3.

006. ㅤthis blog is multi-ship, although thomas is quite guarded due to past experiences, and tends to hold people at an arms length. he is a difficult person to get close to, although it's not impossible - he just requires a lot of care and patience when it comes to emotions. ships won't be forced and rely on plotting & building things organically. chemistry is important between both the muses and the writers.

DISCLAIMERS. mun =/= muse. there are aspects of thomas that are rather unsavory, he is a complicated person and has done some questionable things in his life, for a plethora of reasons. mun does not excuse his bitterness, his attitude, or condone some of his more problematic actions, but it is this complexity that makes him such a compelling character in my opinion. in regards to that kiss scene; it was incredibly stupid of him and, even if jimmy kent had returned his feelings, kissing someone while they are sleeping is extremely inappropriate.this interpretation sees that thomas deeply regrets these actions. even though he had been led on and tricked into believing that jimmy liked him in that way, he wasn't thinking clearly and acted out of desperation, and acknowledges that it was not okay.

1. This was getting ridiculous. 

2. Nervous as he looked, the young butler welcoming the Royal Household to Downton Abbey was a sight for the sore, yet always observant eyes of Richard Ellis. 

3. Thomas prowled forward.

4. In the course of his frequent travels with the Royal entourage, Richard Ellis had witnessed his fair share of lovely views and magnificent buildings; the Downton Abbey estate looming over them was, admittedly, rather impressive in its own right, not to mention involved in a remarkable amount of past scandals - if any of the rumours occasionally flying around were to be believed.

5. "Front doorbell, Mr Barrow."

6. He comes around slowly, to the faint sound of birds chirping, to a mild breeze tickling his naked skin, to the pleasant caress of the light filtering through the curtains.

7. Thomas woke up to an awfully dry mouth, a throbbing headache, and dramatically inclined to rethink most of his life choices. 

8. "Gotta say, mate, I'm chuffed you decided to move in," Chris told Richard as he drove them to his building.

For My Friend Croc

Hi, it’s Flippy.

I’ve never had to write a post like this before and I hope this is okay to do. I hope I never have to do this again. I’m putting it here in the Thommy tag so people from the old Thommy days who knew Croc might see it- don’t really know what the etiquette is here. I’m sorry if it’s inappropriate or something.

So. I found out today that my old fandom buddy Lex/Kate aka CrocodilePatronus -as we knew her then- has passed away. I won’t get into how, and the why is impossible, of course.

All this time later, long after she stopped using CrocodilePatronus- I still think of her as “Croc.” Always.

Croc’s mom texted Are-are-kay and Camaelczarka (and myself) this completely bullshit news.

After all this time I still kept in contact with Croc and we chatted once in a while and there aren’t a lot of people in general I’m good at keeping in contact with.  She and I weren’t super close or anything, but we had our one on one talks about things. She kept sending me Christmas presents. Such a goddamn sweetheart. 

We watched Mulholland Drive together. She gave me Superman comics to read.

She was also one of the first people I met in on Tumblr for a weird tiny niche (and very literary) fandom that shipped Thomas Barrow and Jimmy Kent from Downton Abbey.

You start reading some stories about how you want a couple dudes to bang or whatever and suddenly you really care about the people you met talking about this stuff. Who knew.

When I think of Croc I think of a picture she posted of herself wearing a crocodile hat, hunched over her laptop late at night, reading one of my fics–this was before I’d spoken to her at all. 

She was a very talented writer. Her fics were beautiful and she was generous in writing them for her friends as gifts. She was endlessly creative, stylish, hilarious, rebellious, spirited, sardonic, shockingly sweet (and pretended she wasn’t), hyper intellectual, kind of adorably possessive of her friends,  LOYAL as fuck good lord. She was a punk rock bitch. 

I’m grateful that I got to meet her in person once in Salem with Cam and Are-are. I’m grateful I got to give her a hug once. I’m pissed off I won’t ever get to do that again.

She was 28. I’ll miss her.
