Engineering 101: Let's Play Tears of the Kingdom

I haven't liveblogged a game in mumblemumble years and I've got Tears of the Kingdom in my hot little hands, so here we go! There will be spoilers, obviously, so everything's under a cut. Mute "stealthnoodle plays loz: tears of the kingdom" to opt out of this ridiculous experience.

I'm not sure far in yet--there are two quests under Main Quests marked "Complete" and two in progress, if that helps orient without spoiling!

Had to restart 5 seconds in because this game detects the language from the console setting and I don't want my first playthrough to be (slowly) in Japanese, lol.

Zelda wants to do her nerd shit but I want to spiderclimb on the ceiling, and guess who has the plot reins right now? Imma skitter.

A kingdom of weird-looking people in the sky, you say? Zelda's ancestors confirmed for bird-fuckers.

I am so intensely SMT brain-rotted that I saw a glowing magatama and expected Zelda to eat it. I don't care if it just tumbled out of a freaky mummy, it is probably full of skills and stats!

After a tremendous amount of fucking around I have finally entered the Temple of Time, found another magatama, somehow still not eaten it, and gotten a magical handshake from a brief apparition of Zelda that lets me reverse the motion of an object. This is by far the magical power that would have the most practical application for me, a person with two cats.

Ascend is the funniest one, though. Love swimming up solid stone and popping out of the floor like I'm surfacing in a backyard pool. Canceling it is even funnier, like, well, now that I've had a peak at what's going on up here, I am choosing to return to the depths. Ta-ta.

I stuck my broken Master Sword into a ball of light and it went to what I guess is the Zelda Dimension so she could give it a little hug? That hug agitated a dragon and cleared up the weather. At least we go to show each other our new outfits.

(I will NOT wear a shirt except when the plots mandates one onto me. That is how I played BotW and I'm not giving in to Big Modesty now. Tiddies of the Kingdom)

More Marauders stuff, this time with actual pages:

The gambling scene is hilarious and I greatly appreciate it, although it does feel a bit like Duggan, as usual, couldn’t think of anything important for Iceman, Pyro and Bishop to be doing, and so just shoved them all into a scene together.  But I was expecting that Pyro might not even show up in this issue, so thanks for small favors.  I’ll say, it seems in character for Pyro (who probably started the game), and Shinobi, not so much for Bishop and Iceman.  Bobby seems like he’s been good-naturedly letting himself get dragged into whatever sleazy shit Pyro gets up to (like the scene of them selling the stolen boat in an early issue), so him being there isn’t OOC for how Duggan has been writing him.  Bishop is more straight-laced, and is a Captain of Krakoa, so I’d expect him to be engaging more with important visitors and helping with security, but maybe he decided let his hair down for an evening.  I do kinda like the idea that Pyro has become total bros with Iceman and Bishop, since the three of them are usually shown hanging out together.  Maybe one of the themes of Marauders is that Pyro has been “corrupting” Iceman and Bishop as much as they’ve been a good, redemptive influence on him.  

Also love the Sean and Emma moment! 

First of all, Shinobi’s outfit is the most boring, understated piece of garbage....this is a dude who was dressing like a gay pirate back in the 90′s, you expect me to believe he’d wear something so plain for THE high-class mutant event of the year?  Shinobi should be peacocking it up with Iceman and Prodigy, and Magneto and everyone else who wore something daring.

More importantly, why is Shinobi now acting like Emma’s obedient little lap dog?  When Shinobi was first resurrected, Sebastian told him (untruthfully) that Emma and Kate were responsible for his murder.  As far as I know that’s never been dealt with.  There was a moment in an earlier issue when Emma seemed to scan Shinobi’s mind to determine that he was not directly involved with Kate’s murder, so she’s been going soft on him, but I don’t see why Shinobi is cooperating with Emma.  From Shinobi’s perspective, he was brought back to life and told that Emma Frost is his enemy, responsible for his death, and he’s been plotting against her with his father.  His father has now wound up in a wheelchair after a very obvious beat-down, and is getting pushed around everywhere by Emma who is clearly gloating and twisting the knife.  Does Shinobi not have a few questions about that, even assuming that Sebastian, for some reason, didn’t tell him what happened?  I would expect Shinobi to be biding his time and continuing to plot, while not trusting Emma for a second.  And maybe we’ll find out that’s what he’s been doing, but right now this is weird.  Shinobi seems to have automatically fallen onto Emma’s side, but there’s no reason for it?  I’m torn, because I like the redemptive turn for Shinobi, I think he’s a very sympathetic character.  I like him being on the Marauder’s side, but I want it to actually make sense. 

Also, LOL at Sebastian sitting there pouting like a toddler.  He’s a cranky old man for this entire issue.  Not sure how that contributes to the story, though.  For someone who clearly dislikes and has no respect for Sebastian, Duggan certainly seems to put him into the story a lot. 

This is a nice little scene, and it’s nice to see Emma acknowledge the whole crew (especially after Kate’s resurrection party, when she got a special “thank you” from the mutants that the Marauders had rescued as if she and she alone deserved all the credit). 

But what the hell is Fenris doing there?  WHY are they even in this book?  @sebastianshaw​ already had a great rant about why it makes no sense for Emma and Kate to willingly work with them, and I’ve mentioned before that their presence in the book seems utterly pointless.  I’m sure Duggan is actually planning to use them at some point, but he’s taking his sweet time about it.  If I were Callisto or Pyro or Bishop in that scene, I’d wonder why Fenris was at the toast when they’ve never even been shown working with the Marauders or the Hellfire Trading Co (only with Sebastian and Shinobi in what I thought was a secret arrangement).  What exactly do the twins do?  What is their job description?  And why are they there instead of Bobby and Christian, conspicuously missing, who actually have been going on missions with the crew.  Are they off panel actually having a serious conversation about their relationship, which Duggan will never let them do on panel?  Are they making out in a closet somewhere?  I’d like to believe that Bobby isn’t there because he’s doing something important in another issue/book (obviously there’s a lot of things happening at the Gala stretching across many books), but I’m not holding my breath. 

Also, Callisto’s dress is so blah.  I thought Jumbo Carnation liked her.  I mean, it’s nice, but just...dull.  Like Shinobi’s outift.  I do notice that they’ve got most of the crew in Hellfire colors - either red, white or black, which is neat.  I’m assuming the Pyro’s outfit is because red is one of his signature colors, not because he has an official position (like Bishop being the Red Bishop or Callisto as White Knight), but it also kinda shows his allegiance to Kate.  

As usual, this turned into a salt post from me.  It actually IS a fun issue.  Marauders is generally a very fun series, and Duggan is good at giving nice moments to the characters that he takes an interest in.  I’m just....baffled at some of his pacing and storytelling decisions, in terms of what he chooses to emphasize.  He’ll plant plot seeds and then let them sit for ages with no apparent payoff, but other plot elements will come up abruptly, out of nowhere.  There was no in-story lead-up to Storm leaving the group, and the farewell issue didn’t even give us a reason why, it was just taken as a given.  And while that issue was a wonderful tribute to Storm, it also felt like a cop-out, insisting that yes, all the Marauders have totally bonded with Storm and she is very important to them, showing scenes that we mostly never saw in the book before.  Iceman and Christian have their relationship, whatever it may be, take place mostly in background panels.  Bishop has one moment (in King in Black) where he is torn between his duty as a Captain and his role as a Marauder crew member, then it’s never mentioned again.  Pyro suddenly makes an awkward comment about how he is starting to regret his violent past and sees his time in the Marauders as restitution, but there’s been no hint of that before, no real indication that his attitude is changing.  The Yellowjacket storyline could have been an interesting complication, but it gets resolved very quickly, in an issue that is mostly not about Pyro himself at all, and when he calls the Marauders his “friends” in that issue, it feels forced.  I think Duggan is trying to give the boys something to do, but he lets them sit in the background so often that their development moments feel inorganic and rushed.  Meanwhile, plot elements like Fenris, and whatever Shinobi and Christian have been getting up to get seeded far in advance, then just sit in the book and fester.  Maybe this will all make sense when Duggan’s run is finished and we see what he’s been planning.  Maybe there will be great payoff for all of this.  But right now, it all feels very uneven. 

Anyways, don’t mind my usual bitching.  If you want to see Emma walking around both looking and being fabulous, it’s a great issue.  Lots of nice little moments, and political intrigue, and a cameo by obscure character Rhapsody.  I know we’re only one issue into the Gala, so presumably more interesting things will happen.

I was tagged by @dynastiasimss​ - Thank you so much for tagging me!! 😊💖💗 This will most definitely get a bit wordy because I’m terrible at explaining things concisely! 😂 Also, I’ll mostly be talking about my process for 2.B.A Grandmaster but I’ll touch on my process for Erin in San Myshuno too!

I’m also going to get tags out of the way up here so that no one has to scroll all the way through this ... absolute novel that is under the cut LMAO so I tag: @cyansimblr  @x-simss @matchacake and any other simblrs who wanna do this!! and feel free to skip if you want!

1. Your writing process My writing process is very, very chaotic, and changes with the wind... Erin in San Myshuno doesn’t really have a process, I just play the game and then put in some dialogue based on the events. None of it is guided by my hand at all though! 2.B.A Grandmaster on the other hand is written in part based on what happens in game and in part by my own creative vision. Most of the time, I let stuff happen, and then fill in the blanks in between events. I go in game, play Sims as I normally would (skill build, take care of needs, go out to venues, etc.) and then watch what weird and interesting things happen. For example, Augusta’s meeting with Xavier in the beginning was completely the game’s doing! He was the only one to show up for the Welcome Wagon event, so I rolled with that. Scenes like Kaitlin’s meeting with Maverick and those sort of things are planned by me, as they’re necessary to create a more full narrative! It’s like collaborative storytelling, but my “partner” is a game that is weird and random and crazy. 😂 After stuff happens in game and I get screenshots, I then actually write for it. I chose to write novel style for the series because - as some of my long-term followers may remember - I had another story that was just screenshots with dialogue on them? And it was very hard, LOL, it didn’t suit my workflow very well and I ended up dropping it after a month or so. I wanted 2.B.A Grandmaster to be something I could post consistently, and so I opted for a style that I was more familiar and experienced with!

2. Scene building For the most part, I just work with what sims gives me, but as I mentioned above, some scenes I actually go to the trouble of setting up. For those, I still use the sims animations mostly (I’ve used poses about 3 times in 2.B.A Grandmaster so far) but I do usher my sims around the "set” as I see fit. I build a lot of my own lots and locations for 2.B.A GM because I tend to get a vision in my mind of what I want and refuse to settle for less. 😂 One such case is the scene where Maverick meets up with Octavia--

I made the alleyway we see here - it’s two entirely empty buildings sandwiched side by side on an otherwise empty lot in Oasis Springs. The only part I bothered to decorate was the alley itself because I knew I wasn’t going to use the rest of the area, but maybe we’ll revisit it sometime and I’ll finish the two buildings! I actually loved making this set and like how it turned out, LOL~

Then I just have whatever sims are involved in a scene interact with each other for ages until I feel like I have enough screenshots to make a scene. I usually have a vague idea of what’s going to be said in any given scene - especially the ones I actually planned out beforehand - but I get some excess screenshots to be safe. I try lots of different interactions and pause like every few frames to get interesting expressions and stuff, LOL. Lots of “Complain about Cold Weather” and “Give fake bad news” ...

3. CC/Pose making I don’t actually make my own CC for 2.B.A GM specifically (I’ve made a couple eyeshadows but I don’t use them super frequently) but there is a scene coming up in the future that I plan to make poses for. I have a very clear image in my mind that includes a lot of subtle expressions and very specific things that I doubt I could find poses for, so I’m gonna have to brave the terrifying landscape of blender in order to make it a reality. 😧

4. Getting in the zone I don’t have any sort of “ok, show time” ritual like some people do but I wish I did, because my motivation waxes and wanes so unpredictably. Some days I just don’t feel like doing anything, and other days I edit and write for 5 posts in a row! I am always listening to something though, usually music, every once in a blue moon a video with lots of talking. 5. Screenshot folder

6. Captions I don’t do captions on 2.B.A GM posts, but for my city living gameplay I do! I keep them simple, because I don’t want to make it too much work for myself. Erin in San Myshuno’s style of editing is 100% based around ease, because I wanted something to post often that didn’t put too much of a strain on me. Verdana in white, typically 35-40 px, with a gradient border. Each sim we encounter has a different gradient color, usually based on their outfit or just the ~vibe~ I get from them. Erin’s gradient is Hot pink to ... gee, what would you call it. Sonic the Hedgehog Blue LMAO-- I chose that gradient because that’s the color of the overlay, which I’ll talk more about in the next section!

7. Editing My two ‘series’ - and I use that term loosely LMAO - have different editing processes, so I’ll try to summarize them both. Basically, for 2.B.A Grandmaster, I touch up the saturation and brightness depending on the scene. If it’s evening in the shots, I usually won’t touch brightness, and if it’s night, I might even lower it a bit for more accurate lighting! Once that’s done, I blur everything but relevant elements of a scene, usually the character we’re following or who is speaking. I have to select the character from the background manually which takes a bit, but other than that it’s very minimal.

My shots aren’t super glamorous, but I prefer simple screenshots and actually being able to keep up with a story schedule as opposed to what happened with my last story. 😬 As for Erin in San Myshuno, barring captions which I only do when I feel it’s necessary, it’s literally just an overlay on otherwise untouched screenshots. 😭 I would do more, but again, it’s supposed to be an easy downtime sort of series for me so~

This goes over top all screenshots on the “Add” setting at 20% opacity. It brightens things up and softens them, as well as making the colors slightly more harmonious! If anyone wants me to go more in depth on editing, or maybe captions, please let me know! I’m happy to talk about it if it’ll help anyone, and I know that a lot of tutorials cover how to do stuff in Photoshop, whereas I use FireAlpaca (which is 100% free btw! It’s more of an art program, but not bad for editing) 8. Throwback!

Oh boy, so this is one of my first posts on simblr. For starters, I didn’t know about camera mode at the time, so that’s the first thing I would change obviously LOL. 😬 The framing I did at the time was ... cute, but it makes the pictures feel kind of cramped and small in my opinion, so I did away with that for all of my later stories. Also, Amy and Gemma aren’t very well centered in this picture! Other than that, this isn’t actually terrible I don’t think, so aside from maybe blurring the background as I do on 2.B.A GM now, I wouldn’t change too much! Thankfully, I had observed other people’s stories before making my own on here for a little bit, so I wasn’t starting with absolutely no idea what to do, but I still think I’ve improved since I made these. 😊

Alfred’s Evolving Fashion Sense Plus Some Meta about Matthew and Savino

Alfred’s style in this story starts off as extremely casual and lazy. He doesn’t have many occasions to dress up, and he dreads having to wear a suit in Rome. He gives very little thought to how he gets dressed in the morning and usually just picks out whatever is clean and comfortable. When he does attempt to show some stylistic flair, he usually does so by being overly loud and kitschy (like an ugly Christmas sweater that lights up because he’s so excited about Christmas).

This all starts to change in August during back to school shopping, because Alfred gets a crash course in fashion from a very fashionable Italian teen boy. Savino starts teaching him how to put some effort into his clothes while also showing him things that work in a fairly straightforward way and does try to make it easier on him by getting him neutral accessories like shoes that will work with his outfits. He does allow Alfred some room to play, like when he gets him a loud paisley tie in Christmas colors but avoids the specific Christmas tie cliche and balances it out with a subtler pinstripe and checked pocket square pattern. He also encourages Alfred’s interest in cufflinks and when he gets excited over the bomber jacket. The bomber jacket is very different from what he was showing him and does have some elements that could be problematic if Alfred had kept to his overall style aesthetic before (being very casual and having a boxier fit), but it’s purposeful and Alfred is obviously not just picking it because he’s lazy.

Alfred slowly begins to experiment with his style after getting that crash course from Savino. His dads are more fashionable than him in specific ways, but he starts to take an interest because he’s trying to impress the guy he’s in love with. At first he plays it safe with outfits Savino specifically picked out for him, but then he starts to do things in the vein of what Savino does. He fumbles at first, but he gets the hang of it eventually. The jacket is something he uses a lot and he also figures out how to style it with Savino-approved clothes via trial and error. The blue scarf Savino gets him at the mall also becomes something he works with due to his emotional attachment to it, and he tries to mix that in with his wardrobe in a fashionable way when it makes sense to add a pop of really bright royal blue. (He’s doing this right now with just outfits that have a lot of blue in them already, but he may get more adventurous later.) He’s now to the point of carefully planning out his outfits, and Matthew noticed the change when he carefully started coordinating a new outfit after the one he was wearing got damaged by ice skating, even to the point of changing his belt and shoes, which he never would have done before. Despite feeling like he’ll never get sprezzatura because he was so flustered when Savino was explaining it to him (because he unbuttoned a couple shirt buttons), he’s well on his way to developing his own unique style, heavily influenced by what Savino taught him.

Savino is still generally very snazzily dressed throughout this story, but there are moments where he’ll wear something casual because of Alfred with less attention to how it coordinates with the rest of his ensemble. When he can plan things out, he does incorporate things like the replica jersey he wears to Alfred’s football games, Alfred’s bomber jacket, and the hat Alfred got him into the rest of his outfit, but sometimes he’s wearing these things for emotional reasons that have nothing to do with fashion. He’s worn Alfred’s leather jacket for three days straight, both because it’s cold and he’s doing it as an act of defiance against Arthur and Francis as like “lol, you don’t want me being sappy with your kid in front of my extended family because it might look weird to them, so now I’m going to wear his jacket constantly.” The leather jacket often looks incongruous on him, because sometimes it’s paired on top of an otherwise formal ensemble if he didn’t have the time to style himself in a way where the jacket would make more sense. He’s also going to wear the beanie Alfred got him three days straight, even though it may not make as much sense all three days he’s wearing it. (The first day, he planned an outfit to make it look good, but on Christmas Eve, he’s stressed because of his cemetery plans, so he just throws on Alfred’s hat and beanie because it emotionally comforts him.) He’s developing not only the laziness but emotions that influenced Alfred’s fashion choices (like loving Christmas so much he wanted to wear a really loud Christmas sweater pre-story), but only in regards to the hat and beanie (not the jersey, so far, because he’s only wearing that to Alfred’s games and tries to plan out an outfit for that to the best of his abilities).

Matthew in this story was never as lazy as his brother, but he often prioritizes function and comfort over fashion, and nobody has influenced him otherwise because Feli just helped him with the suit, which was the one thing he asked for help with. At this point, I’d say Alfred puts a lot more conscious effort into his clothes than Matthew does. When Feli helped Matthew with his suit, I think he was trying to break Matthew out of his rut of the black suit, white shirt, and red tie he got as the one suit he had to go on dates with his girlfriend. That combo is serviceable, but it’s too stark on his pale skin tone and Feli thinks Matthew could do something more interesting than that. By contrast, Savino pretty much picked out Alfred’s suit for him so Alfred wouldn’t go completely crazy with colors and patterns (and when Alfred saw the paisley multicolored tie, Alfred actually got excited about the idea of wearing a tie instead of viewing it as a strangulation device like he did every other time he had to wear a tie). Alfred’s overall look will be more colorful and patterned than his brother, but not as bold in terms of styling as Savino or Feliciano (assuming I go into any detail about what Feli is wearing), because Savino was trying to get him basics for the suits and dress shirts first (and because he thinks Alfred needs to get used to relatively simpler looks before he attempts the kind of styling Savino does).

wickymicky’s Top Ten Kpop Songs of 2020

1: Dreamcatcher - Scream

There was a point in the process of making this list where I really thought Scream had been surpassed. I was prepared to commit to that idea, and write this with another song being my pick for Song of the Year. But, the reason I’m still going with Scream as my number one is because... well... Scream is something special. I can’t predict the future or anything, but if I can make a guess, I would predict that this song will go on to have a certain kind of legacy that very few songs ever get. This wasn’t just one of the best kpop songs of 2020, it was one of the best (if not THE best) moment of 2020. 

I still can’t believe this song is real. I liked Dreamcatcher before it came out, in fact I loved them. They were my number 1 favorite group. But choosing a favorite Dreamcatcher song was always kind of difficult to me. I liked them all, but there wasn’t one that stood out more than the others and appealed to my taste more. Scream did immediately, though. My hype in the days leading up to its release was really high, I knew it would be good, and it did not disappoint lol. Usually when I listen to a song for the first time, my reaction is sort of like “huh okay, interesting”. Scream is the only song on this list that I loved immediately. It’s the only one that had me going “NO WAY.... OH MY GOD YES” during my first listen haha. La Di Da came close, but Scream is in a league of its own in that respect. I wound up loving all the songs on this list, but some took time, you know? Scream didn’t take any time at all, it was immediate. 

Before getting into kpop, I listened to a lot of metal and things like that. I still do, now and then. So you might think it makes sense that Dreamcatcher was my favorite group, but actually, that was kind of a barrier to me getting into them. See, I’m picky about that stuff, and I wished Dreamcatcher committed harder to that kind of thing. They don’t really have many metal-inspired songs, the furthest most of them go is just like hard rock, if anything. What ended up getting me into Dreamcatcher was the pop aspects of their songs, not the rock/metal ones. It was the catchiness of their songs, not the edginess or guitar or whatever lol. Their song “What” was the most up my alley in terms of metal-ness, but even then, that’s not the reason I love that song. With the Dystopia series starting this year though, they hinted that they would be stepping back somewhat from the rock/metal aspects. Not totally, obviously, it’ll always be a key element in their sound, but Scream is one of their least rock-inspired comebacks ever, and one of their most EDM-inspired. However, it appeals to my metal taste the most. lol. Funny how that works.

It’s dark. Their other title tracks had had some edginess in them, but for the most part they were kinda uplifting or hopeful, in the way that jrock can kinda be, that was definitely a big inspiration for their sound. But Scream… Scream is dark. I believe the lyrics are from the perspective of a witch being burned at the stake. And damn, the drop in Scream’s chorus is maybe the most metal thing I’ve heard in any kpop song ever. That thumping, bounding bass or percussion or whatever that is... it hits me the same way blast beats do in black metal songs haha. The guitar (or synth?) that makes up the main melody of the drop is so threatening too, it’s very, very good. There’s something about the “Devil. Eyes. Come. Nuneul tteunda” that I just instantly knew would be memorable. I think it’ll go down as one of the defining moments of Dreamcatcher’s entire discography. 

If I have one criticism of the song though, it’s that the verses and prechoruses dont necessarily give me the same rush that the chorus does. I know that’s kind of the name of the game with drop-choruses, but still, it makes listening to the song a bit of a disjointed experience, I’m really just waiting for that chorus for the first minute of the song. The verses and prechoruses are good too, but you know what I mean right? That’s just how drop songs are, they’re built around setting up for the monster in the chorus. I just think that songs like Tag Me and Mago are more consistent throughout, there really isn’t a part of either of those songs where I feel like I’m waiting for the next part, I’m always just savoring whatever is currently happening. That being said, the drop here is so good that it kinda makes up for it. Especially the final one, oh my god. I don’t have any problems with the bridge either really, for whatever reason I feel like that part doesn’t halt the momentum too much. 

But so, even with that criticism, I still have to pick it as my number one song of the year, because… it’s one of those rare songs that is more than just a song. Much more. The aesthetic of the video, the outfits, the choreo, the live stages, every single aspect of this entire comeback era was so immaculate lol. It was the most fun I had being into kpop in all of 2020, though that might also be because it was before quarantine... but uh, anyway... If I picked one of the other songs to be my number one song, something just wouldn’t feel right. I’m not sure why though, because as I said, I think there are songs that I enjoy more thoroughly for the duration of the runtime. So then, why did I pick this over them? Why does it just feel like the right call? I’m not sure, but I think it just comes down to bias lol. An intangible feeling of attachment to it. I love Tag Me, I love Mago, I love La Di Da, I love Cool, I love Kick It and Boca and Assa and Crossroads and Fiesta and Black Mamba and So Bad and Monster and Naughty and I Can’t Stop Me and Turn Back Time and aaaaaaaall the other great songs that came out this year, but I don’t love them the way I love Scream. They don’t mean as much to me as Scream does. 

This was one of those comebacks that feels like a real moment... like, I really can think of it as “what kpop was to me before scream” and “what kpop was to me after scream” haha, it changed the game. It’s not my favorite kpop song ever, that would be Picky Picky still, but at this point I think I can say that this is my second favorite, which in my opinion is like some of the highest praise I’m capable of giving lmao. It wouldn’t feel right if I didn’t pick this song as my song of the year, because it really defined this year.

Far Cry 6 Gameplay Stream

okay, so just gonna run through this real quick with my thoughts on the stream. I’m only gonna focus on the gameplay itself, not the story (that will be another day cause i also have a lot of thoughts and theories lol). 

so I’m going to start off with what i didn’t like cause it’s literally one thing but I don’t like that they got rid of the top-minimal mini map thing that we had in far cry 5 and new dawn. I appreciated how clean the interface was in 5 compared to 3 and 4 cause it was less cluttering the screen and easier to draw my eyes upward than down to the left but that’s just me personally. on the other hand, the mini-map does give me heavy ghost recon vibes so it does breed some familiarity. like i said, it’s a super minor detail, and i’m pretty sure they mentioned a lot of customization options for the interface so i can just take it off and wing it lmao. 

this, this took me by surprise. this one i think i do like, but it gave me very strong Destiny vibes. which idk about you all but i got a lot of vibes from a bunch of different games during this stream, which isn’t a bad thing! just a lot of elements i was surprised they incorporated into a far cry game, especially seeing as how this one seems to be the most grounded (don’t come for my weave). overall though i think this is a step up from the mission givers in 5 and new dawn and a nice in between for those of us who would have rather skipped the longer cut scenes for missions in the previous games.

i love love LOVE all this customization we get. and transmog has been confirmed! again, elements from other games (in this case the three most recent assassin creeds). i just hope they don’t pull a Valhalla and limit the amount of armor we can get (please give us at least of what Odyssey had). 

again, very strong destiny vibes here. not much to say here.

customizable amigos!!!!!! best surprise. for some reason i thought this was limited to chorizo cause of his libertad outfit with the pre-order bonus. but i’m so glad it applies to most if not all the amigos (which we will get to in a second)

this this screen shows obviously the three amigos we’ve seen over the past few months. And we know we are getting at least two DLC amigos (Rex the cyber dog with the blood dragon pack and Champagne the panther with the vice pack) - SO it looks like we are getting what looks like another cat (Oluso maybe? the name is kinda cut off) and maybe a dog named BOOM BOOM ;_; (relative of boomer maybe?)

5e Graves, the Outlaw build (League of Legends)

Blam blam?

Honestly I made Twisted Fate awhile ago so Graves was on my To Do list. It does also help that he has become a bit of a main character in the Tales of Runeterra shorts, being featured in both the Bilgewater and Bandle City short. And his place in the League meta certainly helps too.

But truthfully most of the builds I make are rather spur of the moment. Graves was just one I had a sudden bit of inspiration to do, which is why he’s up now.

GOALS

Hope you weren't planning to die of natural causes - Two barrels of Destiny should be enough to blow the brains out of anyone who stands in your way, or any other squishy bits.

I ain't got time to bleed - Who has more armor? The woman riding a horse made of literal metal, or the guy with a shotgun who did a bunch of Wave Dashes?

Lights out - To keep foes in place you’re going to need to smoke them out... Smoke them in?

RACE

Because I’m sick of constantly making Variant Humans I’m still going for Eberron Dragonmarks. Nothing really makes sense for Graves except for the Mark of Passage. Your Dexterity increases by 2 and you can increase any ability of your choice by 1: bump up that Constitution for a bit more bulk in the jungle.

You have Courier’s Speed for 5 extra feet of movement and Intuitive Motion to drive land vehicles or make Acrobatics checks. But of course the main feature we’re here for is Magical Passage to cast Misty Step once per Long Rest. Since we won’t be getting Misty Step from elsewhere we’ll finally have an accurate cooldown for Flash!

If Dragonmarks aren’t an option: Variant Human with either the Crossbow Expert feat or the Fey Touched feat works fine.

ABILITY SCORES

15; DEXTERITY - DEX is the “shoot gun” stat, as well as your AC stat among other things. Turns out we’ll have to shoot our gun a lot.

14; CHARISMA - Graves has a gruff charm to him, and while Fate is the one who usually does the talking that doesn’t mean Graves is incapable of doing so.

13; CONSTITUTION - You’re deceptively tanky for a Markman, though that mostly comes from Grit.

12; STRENGTH - You’re also a fairly large man, and New Destiny is a heavy gun.

10; WISDOM - You can tell when folk are lying but you’re a little dense.

8; INTELLIGENCE - But if the Legends of Runeterra shorts have shown anything it’s that you’re only really getting by on dumb luck and determination.

BACKGROUND

LoL wiki says you’re a mercenary, but you tend to work alone (or sometimes with your partner Tobias) so Urban Bounty Hunter makes a lot more sense for finding the scum of Bilgewater. Insight is nice but I’d also grab Intimidation instead of Persuasion or Deception, because you don’t play nice. You also get some tool proficiencies: I’m sure your partner taught you how to play with Cards and Dice, if only to cheat you out of your money.

But what we’re mainly here for is the Ear to the Ground feature, letting you keep in contact with Bilgewater’s underbelly to know who needs a blasting. These connections can get you a contact for bounty work anywhere you may go.

THE BUILD

LEVEL 1 - FIGHTER 1

If Fighter is the fastest way to learn how to shoot a gun then you must fight! Fighters get two proficiencies from the Fighter list: Athletics and Acrobatics will help you with all that “jungling” stuff.

You also get a Fighting Style and you may be surprised to hear but we’re going for Archery to shoot your gun better, and you also get Second Wind for some refillable potions.

Honestly the most interesting thing to talk about with Fighter levels is what you’re going to grab for a weapon. If you’ve got an Artificer who can give you a cool (Heavy) Crossbow then feel free to grab that, but for the most part we’ll be using Hand Crossbows to recreate the range limitations of Graves’ shotgun.

LEVEL 2 - FIGHTER 2

You’ve got two barrels on your gun so you should shoot both of them in a round thanks to Action Surge. Get another action on your turn! Yup that’s all she wrote chief.

LEVEL 3 - FIGHTER 3

Third level Fighters get to choose their Martial Archetype and Graves is simple, boring, but effective. Feel free to take something more fun (or just use the Dark Tides of Bilgewater Renegade subclass tbh) but it’s about time I crack out the good ol’ Champion Fighter! Buy a Collector for an Improved Critical range of either 19 or 20! That’s 10% crit chance! But any ADC main will tell you that 10% crit still isn’t much crit.

LEVEL 4 - FIGHTER 4

4th level Fighters get our first Ability Score Improvement but being able to shoot good is more important. Grab Crossbow Expert to shoot in melee, reload quickly in a fight, and shoot with your Bonus Action after shooting!

LEVEL 5 - FIGHTER 5

5th level Fighters get an Extra Attack to Blam and then Blam again. These two Blams are separate from your Crossbow Expert Blam which is also separate from Action Surge, allowing you to Blam another two times meaning by level 5 you can already Blam up to 5 times in one round!

LEVEL 6 - SORCERER 1

What? Did you really think that we wouldn’t have any spellcaster levels? Sorry to say it but there’s no easy way for a martial character to shoot out a smoke cloud or Wave Dash enough to survive a sniper rifle shot in the head.

We’ll be going for the Clockwork Soul since your gun is certainly mechanical in nature, and it’s certainly the soul of your character. As a Clockwork Sorcerer you can use your reaction to Restore Balance and negate either Advantage or Disadvantage a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, regaining all expended uses at the end of a Long Rest. I’d flavor this more as your skill from years in the business letting you steady your aim or dodge out of the way of a foe who thinks they have the upper hand.

You know what helps with getting the upper hand? Spellcasting, especially with extra spells from Clockwork Magic. The extra spells you can get can be from the Abjuration or Transmutation schools, and can be from the Wizard, Warlock, or Sorcerer spell list. This means you can grab Shield for some Grit AC, and Absorb Elements for some Magic Resistance as well. You also get 4 cantrips and 2 more leveled spells:

CANTRIPS

Mind Sliver will serve as your Challenging Smite, weakening enemies and damaging them.

Message will help you keep in team chat with TF.

Prestidigitation will let you do all sorts of minor tricks with your bullets and gas canisters.

Mending will help you fix up your outfit after getting in scuff.

SPELLS

Fog Cloud will serve as your Smoke Screen, obviously.

To shoot out some Galeforce projectiles, grab Magic Missile to execute! (Note: Magic Missile will not actually execute.)

LEVEL 7 - WARLOCK 1

I COULDN’T HELP IT I’M SORRY. Warlock levels give us an easy way to have spells ready with just a short rest. First level Warlocks can choose their Patron at level 1 and for a bit more lethality take the Genie Patron. You can choose your Genie Kind and a Djinni will give a couple of benefits: for one your Genie’s Vessel will let you do Thunder damage equal to your Proficiency bonus once per turn thanks to Genie’s Wrath. You also have Bottled Respite for a safe place to rest and store the two guns and three knives you are expected to stick onto your gun.

You also get Pact Magic which is like regular spell slots but they come back after a Short Rest. Thunderwave is a good way to give yourself some space with shotgun knockback, and is on your Warlock spell list since you took the Djinni patron! And Hex is just good to Smite a foe to do more damage to them.

LEVEL 8 - WARLOCK 2

Second level Warlocks get their second Pact Magic slot, which is the main reason we need at least 2 levels in Warlock. But you also get Eldritch Invocations: Devil’s Sight will let you see through the dark with your dumb human eyes. And to play dress up Mask of Many Faces will let you put on some skins!

You can also learn another first level spell from the Warlock list: honestly there isn’t much I want, so I guess you can grab Armor of Agathys for some Thornmail.

LEVEL 9 - FIGHTER 6

Back to Fighterman, take me by the hand for Ability Scores and, +2 to Dexterity man.

LEVEL 10 - FIGHTER 7

7th level Champions are Remarkable Athletes, letting them add half their proficiency bonus to any STR, DEX, or CON check made which you aren’t already proficient in. Unfortunately you have proficiency in Athletics and Acrobatics but at least this buffs your Slight of Hand and Stealth. And since Initiative is a DEX check, this ability improves that too!

Oh and you can also increase the distance of a running long jump by a number of feet equal to your Strength modifier. A whole extra foot of jumping distance!

LEVEL 11 - FIGHTER 8

Hey more Ability Score Improvements! Cap off that Dexterity, and also put 1 in Charisma for later.

LEVEL 12 - FIGHTER 9

9th level Fighters get a QSS for Indomitable, rerolling a failed save to potentially succeed! Are you going to succeed any mental saving throws? Probably not, but you’ve got a good chance for Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution. And you can use this for Death Saves too!

LEVEL 13 - FIGHTER 10

10th level Champions get a whole Additional Fighting Style! Wowie! Take Defense for a bit more Grit in a teamfight.

LEVEL 14 - FIGHTER 11

11th level Fighters get an extra Extra Attack, letting them attack 3 times in a round. This means 4 attacks with Crossbow Expert and 7 if you Action Surge!

LEVEL 15 - FIGHTER 12

12th level Fighters get another Ability Score Improvement, and you know what’s better than one Flash? Two Flashes! Grab the Fey Touched Feat to increase your Charisma by 1, get another once-per-day use of the Misty Step spell, and also grab the Heroism spell for a bit more grit that you can cast with your first level slots.

LEVEL 16 - FIGHTER 13

13th level Fighters get another use of Indomitable. That’s two rerolls on any failed save! Wow I know basic math!

LEVEL 17 - FIGHTER 14

14th level means another Ability Score Improvement: more Charisma means better Definitely-Not-Spells. But feel free to get something like Sharpshooter or another more practical feat, as the only spells you really have which rely on Charisma are Mind Sliver and Thunderwave.

LEVEL 18 - FIGHTER 15

15th level Champions finally grab their Infinity Edge for a Superior Critical on an 18, 19, or 20! 15% crit chance!

LEVEL 19 - FIGHTER 16

16th level means another Ability Score Improvement: either cap off your Charisma or grab some better feats. Build flexibility is important. "Got any bright ideas?"

LEVEL 20 - FIGHTER 17

Our last level is the 17th level of Fighter for one more use of Indomitable (making it 3 uses total) as well as an extra use of Action Surge! You can’t Action Surge twice in the same turn but you can Action Surge two turns in a row to really put the DPS out!

FINAL BUILD

PROS

I like my enemies two ways: dead, or about to be - Your shots are as reliable as they are deadly. 4 shots per turn thanks to Crossbow Expert’s Bonus Action, all of which have a whopping +13 to hit! Not to mention Genie’s Wrath giving you a flat +6 damage every turn and Superior Critical allowing you to crit 15% of the time.

Let's settle the score - A little bit of magic never hurt anyone. A few Misty Steps and a few more Shields can keep you out of danger, and spells like Hex can let you up your DPS. Even Fog Cloud (while admittedly situational) can still give you cover for either an attack or an escape.

Easy, partner - All that magic along with Fighter abilities and Fighter hit die means that you’re sturdier than most, with plenty of ways to shrug off attacks or boost yourself up after getting hit.

CONS

Who's in the dark now? - Making a specific point of dumping both Intelligence and Wisdom leaves you very lacking in social encounters. It also means that you’ll have a lot of trouble with spells. Even Hold Person can really hinder you.

Everyone's a hero... till you shoot off a leg or two - Champion isn’t exactly the most exciting class and this is well-known, but unfortunately Graves isn’t exactly the most exciting champion. Trust me I’d love to make him a Battle Master, Arcane Archer, Samurai, or Renegade (Dark Tides of Bilgewater.) But Graves is a big man with big crits and not much else.

Go ahead; I like moving targets - One more level in Warlock would’ve given you Misty Steps that come back after a Short Rest, as well as the Darkness spell which is arguably stronger than Fog Cloud. It would’ve also given you your Pact Boon, all of which are very strong. Honestly while the 17th level of Fighter is stronger if you know that you aren’t going to get to level 20 I’d definitely recommend a third Warlock level for the reasons I just said.

But of course anyone can win if they can just wave their hands around to send giant flaming rocks out of the sky. You prove that all you need to win a fight is a big gun, good aim, and a whole lotta grit. Put one between their eyes and a hundred more into their chest, and don’t mind any potential Collateral Damage. Just watch out for traps and stay clear of Yordles; wouldn’t want to be featured in another animated short.

oh my god anon okay I’m assuming in context of what I’ve recently posted you want like... my version of events rather than what’s canon but just in case I hope you know that there’s basically zero canon material that actually describes his childhood/young adulthood beyond “I was a warrior born” or whatever the fuck. if you want to know about that idk go on the fucken... marvel wiki page or something

also--I hate that I have to put this out here and I doubt anyone would actually do this but just in case--I have spent like 1 million hours thinking about this because I have brain disorders and it is very close to my heart so please do not A) use this in fics, etc without letting me know/getting my permission in advance or B) reblog this post

anyways. this is a can of worms so I’m going to do a cheeky lil

first we have to get something out of the way: I hate the “shatterstar’s his own grandpa” paradox. I am sorry if this angers people but it makes me mad so I ignore it. the reason it bothers me is because it means alison blaire essentially married her grandson, which is A) weird and B) bad from a genetics perspective.

in my version of canon ‘star IS the biological child of longshot and dazzler but longshot wasn’t cloned using ‘star’s DNA because..... oh god... another whole separate post can be made about this but... in my head, on mojoworld the way genetic engineering works is not really the same as it is here. here genetic engineering generally means taking an existing genome and inserting or deleting genes. this is how they make, for example, animals that glow, or confer pesticide resistance to plants.

but on mojoworld I think the way they genetically engineer is more like... the way we mechanically engineer. like the entire organism is built from the ground up. there’s a master genetic blueprint which is essentially the “minimal genome” required for a functioning humanoid. this was created by study of Earth humans by arize and the other genetic engineers. they can then go in and customize by adding elements to the genome that code for the signals/building blocks that control things like height, strength, hair color, eye color, having hollow bones etc. so in my head longshot was sort of... designed with ‘star as the inspiration, but not directly cloned. that wouldn’t even make sense anyways because A) different hair color and B) LONGSHOT HAS 3 FINGERS ON EACH HAND and shatterstar has 4!! thats NOT HOW CLONES WOULD WORK!!!!

(side note, the concept of a minimal functional genome is a real thing in biology! some scientists have taken a bacterium that already has a small genome and reduced it to the minimum size required for viability. here is a wikipedia article on it and here is the original paper (DOI: 10.1126/science.286.5447.2165) which I can explain in more detail because I took a class on synthetic biology which this technically falls under and I had to read this paper very closely).

fuck I’ve written 4 paragraphs and not even talked about his childhood yet. I am so sorry. anyways. so the way I think they raise the gladiators on mojoworld is they create them in batches of 5 to 10 identical copies of a certain “model”, place each copy in a different “class” with a set of 2-3 mentors/teachers, and train them to fight until they are 13 or 14. until this time the only names they have are the names that identify the “model”--like for shatterstar that would be gaveedra-seven where the model identifier is “gaveedra” and he is (in the lore that I have come up with) the 7th of 8 total.

the reason they create multiples and put them in different classes is each mentor is going to have a slightly different style of teaching which is going to work better for some and worse for others, so it allows them to have more mass production while increasing the chances of creating a truly great champion. it’s classic nature versus nurture--the genetic engineers create your nature, but you don’t end up exactly the same as others of your model. maybe you get an edge, maybe you don’t.

another thing that happens is different mentors believe in different ways of raising the kids in their care. shatterstar specifically was raised in a class where there was absolutely zero emotional development at all and no attachments allowed beyond fighting alliances. that’s not the case in all classes, and it also had the effect of making him somewhat of an outsider even within the other gladiators as he got older.

at 13 or 14--and yes I realize this is very fucked up but dude its fucking mojoworld idk what you expected--they start participating in fights. the first ones aren’t to the death and they’re as teams and they’re not usually televised they’re more like high school sports games that are attended by scouts (here, they’re “sponsors”--I think that’s a canonical term but I honestly can’t remember) and if you get sponsored you leave your class and join a new “team” that’s really just a bunch of people who all have the same sponsorship. this is where things can get interesting because they’ve all been raised with slightly different fighting styles but more importantly, slightly different degrees of Personhood.

also at this point I should mention that by this time, there are usually only 2, maybe 3 of each model left. either they died or were recognized as not having talent so they were sent to eventually fulfill other roles in the network. in ‘star’s case there was just him and gaveedra-five. once you get to the stage where you’re sponsored and you’re actually fighting to the death one of the first people you’ll fight is any remaining members of your model group.

by the time you’re the only one left of your group, you’re also eligible to earn a stage name. this usually happens if you have a particularly epic fight with a lot of viewers, you win and the commentators will typically say something like “Let’s give this crowd a real name to cheer!” and they’ll have a few candidate names and they’ll kind of just pick one. AUGH I actually have this scene written out in story form but its too long so I think I’ll save it.... :) 

after you get a name you also get a cool outfit and usually some kind of mark or tattoo that serves as a brand. this brings me to another important point--shatterstar inherited the X-gene from alison and therefore he IS a mutant. his mutation is the swords vibration thing and the glowing eye. the star mark is a tattoo and teleportation is benjamin russell’s mutation (how he fits into all this is... for another post). basically after he got his name the costuming department guys were like “hey your eye glows, you look like the Legendary Warrior of Old, Longshot, we’re gonna pattern your look after him” so they gave him the star tattoo and the outfit that’s literally inverse colors of longshot’s.

also this brings me to another aside: you’re probably wondering “if he’s the biological kid of longshot and alison how are there 8 gaveedras?” when the genetic engineers got a hold on him as a baby they were like Sick! free baby! free genetic material! thats our job done for us! so they cloned him (in the traditional sense) and made 7 copies. this was also to kind of conceal his identity as technically being from outside mojoworld, which would make him stick out and thus be a target. they DID edit out the x-gene in the other gaveedra models though. this wasn’t a problem for ‘star because his mutation didn’t manifest until he was already sponsored.

I think that’s .... pretty much it for macroscopic lore on what it was like to be a kid gladiator on mojoworld. now let me give you some Tidbits of his life specifically:

like I said he was raised in a particularly cold and ruthless class. the mentors that raised him are like well-known by everyone to produce some of the best warriors but also there’s discourse on mojoworld because some people say perfectly emotionless killing machines aren’t as fun to watch. when he was sponsored there were 4-5 others in the same sponsorship and they were like Theres Something Wrong With You LOL

they speak earth languages on mojoworld because they’re imitating the broadcasts they (the spineless ones) used to hear from earth. however, most of the lower-class as well as almost all arena fighters and other television personalities speak cadre or other languages which are native to the planet. the stage names are all vaguely in english, but the gladiators don’t really understand them at first.

shatterstar got his name before he got the glowing eye, and when he learned what stars are, and saw his eye as a little star, he was like wow :) this is Me :) which is why that name is so important to him. it’s also one of the first things that wholly belonged to him.

(you can’t see stars on mojoworld because of light pollution and also because it’s a pocket dimension and there just aren’t that many stars to see)

I hate to bring up the s**ley miniseries but I do think it would be interesting to have him have a sort of ... mentor/first friend, similar to the concept of gringrave but they were NOT in a relationship. it was more like... another kid who was a year or so older than him got a soft spot for him and helped him not be so clueless. she didn’t make as much progress as xforce did, obviously. but they were.... something like friends.

unfortunately she was used by spiral to get shatterstar to murder the first rebel guy who tried to get him out of there. then she got switched sponsors (this can happen) and he had to kill her, and he was like well I will simply never develop any kind of attachment to anyone ever again.

he almost didn’t make it out of the first training session with his sponsorship group (this is semi-canon--there’s a reference when he’s teaching terry to swordfight to almost not surviving the first time he was in a gladiator class or whatever it was).

the closest he ever came to losing was the day he got the name. that’s why the crowds loved it so much.

the double-bladed sword was a gimmick weapon but when he got his mutation they realized it works way better if there’s resonance between two parallel blades so they redesigned it as an actual weapon.

(forgot this but I feel like I should include it) at 17 he escaped the arenas and joined the cadre alliance. two years later he came to earth and joined xforce.

I wanted Vienna to be more involved now that I was starting to firmly establish the cast as a set of four.  Vienna working with Brianna to mirror Cammie working with Layla wasn’t planned at the moment I decided to have Brianna’s unseen staff member leave, it just worked out nicely that way.  I also had some story ideas for Brianna and Vienna’s 1-on-1 friendship that would be a contrast to Brianna and Cammie’s 1-on-1 friendship but I admit at the time of writing this commentary (comic #147) I haven’t really gotten around to doing that much at all lol.

This strip also tasked me with deciding whether I was gonna draw comedic gore/blood in the series where appropriate. I decided to keep it subtle and implied in the end. I always feel like the way I draw that sort of thing is too cartooney to be taken seriously anyway but some folks are more sensitive to it than others

#52 Trial

It was time to stop making Vienna so one-note, making her the butt of a joke for once was as much for me as writer as it was for Cammie.  Also, while (unintentionally) her left hand is rarely seen during the period, Cammie’s hand remains bandaged for the next few weeks!  I’ve mentioned previously but Cammie comics usually take place in real time unless a multi-comic story arc very obviously has strips covering a single scene or day.

#53 Chips

One of my fave visual gag strips but argh I have the biggest regret to be honest that I didn’t end it on the panel above. I pushed the joke just a bit further than I needed to - like, the tape measure burning up and giving Cammie no information to work with is funny, but the mere act of her trying to use it at all is way funnier, I should have ended on the stronger moment. I feel like I’ve gotten slightly better at this (there’s a lot of comics since where I’ve left “kinda funny” stuff on the cutting room floor to let funnier jokes shine brighter), and honestly the idea of squeezing a little more out of a joke is something I’m considering for bonus content if I ever get round to doing a stupid patreon already.

For anyone who wonders how I can possibly come up with something to make a joke out of every week, I recommend you read the instructions on all fire equipment in your workplace. I came up with at least one comic by doing so. Said information might have other uses too, I guess.

#54 Sigh

This is one that I personally thought was just gonna be a bit of an inbetweeny-nothing-special comic but ended up being one of my most popular! A RL friend even told me it was their favourite strip to date at the time. A lot of fun was definitely had drawing silly Cammie faces.

Frogy Soundtrack CD in Panel 1! Filled with midi music I liked from games I was unfamiliar with that I downloaded off VGMusic.com when I was 10 or so and just decided “this is music from the Frogy video games* now”.

*Note, very few Frogy video games made it past the conceptual stage of development due to budgetary constraints

#55 Excitable

I’m not really much of a dog person, there are very few breeds that I find aesthetically appealing, but I didn’t want to be so boring as to just simply design Layla’s dog to be the same breed as my own. Fortunately Cocker Spaniels would be one of the other few breeds I like so I went with that.

Forgive getting serious for a minute but... I actually learned via an anonymous person on curious cat, within the past year, that it’s uncommon for Muslims to keep pet dogs. Obviously Layla’s - or anyone’s - faith is never brought up in the comics, I merely sought to provide the representation of “a person who wears a hijab” when I designed Layla. My goal is nothing more than to add to the pile of media that completely normalises the choice to dress as modestly as Layla chooses. I realise to some that might be a bit of a cop-out, and I don’t think there’s much I could say to convince such people otherwise - the honest truth is I don’t think I’m equipped to provide a perfect representation of an Islamic character (case in point, I gave her a dog without even thinking it was something I’d need to do research on lol), but I’d rather do something than nothing out of fear I’ll get it wrong.

While faith is not mentioned in the comics, where I can, I’d at least like to portray Layla so that she doesn’t clash with the idea of her being Muslim. That said, one advice I took to heart from a thread giving advice on writing Muslim characters is that, as with all faiths, some people do not follow their relgion’s rules strictly, be it on purpose or otherwise, so don’t be afraid to write “imperfect” Muslim characters - which I think it’s fair to say Layla is, and as someone who has no personal connection to the faith, I am far more equipped to write. Equally, after I DID do research into the whole dog thing, I was able to find cases where some Muslims do see it as an outdated rule and choose to have dogs anyway.

Having said all of THAT though... I have since come up with a backstory as to how Layla ended up with Jamila that I think could potentionally provide a compromise for anyone disappointed by this aspect of her portrayal. I dunno if/when I’ll be able to get to it, but as with all narrative ideas I don’t want to spoil any element in advance.

On a lighter note, this is the first time we see Layla in her “default” outfit, with the bright red cartooney skull with cat ears design on it - it was meant to just be a one-off design because I didn’t feel like drawing her t-shirt from her initial artworks, but I ended up liking it. The design is from a fictional band she likes, I guess!

Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled skin ideas

Pretty much what it says. I might as well make a post for potential DLC skins Beenox could choose to add. If a character isn’t listed, it just means I haven’t got ideas for them. This is more just an open brainstorm too to list my ideas, lol.

To start, @LuchosFactory on twitter drew some awesome concept ideas so I’ll refer to them sometimes.

Crash Bandicoot:

As shown in the links, there’s Carbon Crash, Titans/Mind over Mutant era Crash, and biker Crash from Warped.

Special mention to the Dash Dingo one because that would be pretty fun

You have a whole host of CTTR skins if you really want ideas. This Reddit post illustrates this and other ideas on how Crash has been seen like Jetpack Crash and Crash from those promo images. Of the CTTR skins, the Skeleton Crash and Evil Crash would probably be the best (of course, that’s if you don’t make Evil Crash his own character one day).

Maybe a wombat colour scheme because, well, Willy the Wombat.

They love robot skins so maybe robo-Crash? :v

Coco Bandicoot:

I love all of the ideas in the concept from twitter: her biker look from the Warped cover, her Titans and Mind over Mutant looks, her N Tranced look and even Evil Coco (based on the idea from Twinsanity, again assuming she can’t be her own character).

Her Nitro Kart and Twinsanity design could be a kind of intermediary between her classic and Titans look.

If you really want to dig deep, you could use her Crash Boom Bang look. :P It actually looks similar to old Zembillas concept art, funnily enough.

If Crash gets a Warped pilot skin, Coco should too.

Maybe a hacker Coco, perhaps even a little Matrix inspired since she was gonna be like that in one Twinsanity concept.

Dr Neo Cortex:

From the link above, Sheriff Cortex is the most compelling concept to me.

Maybe some of his Warped looks we see in the past, like a Roman Cortex (the former even has an N Sane model), Pirate Cortex or Pharaoh Cortex.

IDK why but I like the idea of a formal Cortex, even if it’s just a simple suit or tux, lol.

I could also see him in a safari getup for some reason, lol.

Maybe something inspired by Victor Frankenstein given what I suggest for N. Gin and N. Brio later.

With all this talk about how he came from a circus family... clown Cortex?

IDK why but I can also imagine a goofy disco cortex. :P

Cortex as a military general like Tiny? IDK why but I can see lots working for him lol.

Dr N. Gin:

Again, a lot of great concept ideas drawn above, like Radical Entertainment era N. Gin (seriously I want that Gothic look), the CNK look with the red eye, the gas station look and even the idea of an inverted N. Gin is fun.

Twinsanity N. Gin with the yellowy skin would be cool too, though I guess we have green N. Gin lol.

Robot N. Gin if you want to go further.

Frankenstein’s monster or maybe Igor N. Gin?

I could see N. Gin as a pirate.

Steampunk N. Gin? N. Tropy already has that kind of aesthetic so why not, his rocket could be a steam chimney lol.

Tiny Tiger:

His gladiator appearance from Warped.

Look, I admit I’m not a fan of whatever Tiny was in Crash of the Titans (why is he a literal tiger???), but maybe he could have that green outfit he wore, maybe even with the Bengal tiger stripes.

Dingodile:

You have different coloured pants with his Wrath of Cortex, XS and Twinsanity looks.

Since he’s the “Australian” character even among all the Australian animals, maybe give him a khaki shirt or something, maybe even with a hat if you want, he can be the Dingodile hunter (there’s even Zembillas artwork of him in a shirt or overalls). :P

Ripper Roo:

We DO have gentleman Ripper Roo, but why not go further and give us a Dr Roo look from Crash 2?

Following that, you could also give him a skin with the long crazy hair.

Pinstripe Potoroo:

His Twinsanity suit would be pretty cool for something darker. His purple suit is close I guess, but still.

Maybe a version with a longcoat could work like this old design?

Dr Nefarious Tropy:

His white skin is actually not too dissimilar to his Twinsanity one, though if it can be differentiated then go there.

I’m sure you could come up with all sorts of time travel themed skins for him if you tried, maybe even stuff tied to different eras.

If Cortex and N. Gin can be robots then why not N. Tropy?

Fake Crash:

He has the green pants from the Vicarious Visions games I guess, lol.

Nitros Oxide:

Give him a fancy version of his usual outfit with a top hat like his CNK podium animatiton.

Some of his concept art is interesting, specifically the ones where he has a mask on. Maybe it’s like a space or explorer suit?

Look if he’s an alien, why not have a xenomorph themed skin? :P This is random but lol.

Penta Penguin:

How about look to actual penguins for ideas like Polar with bears and close relatives and Pura with cats? The ninja skin already looks a bit like a rockhopper.

Crunch Bandicoot:

Obviously you have his Mr T parody skin from Tag Team Racing.

Some sort of military outfit maybe could work?

His N Tranced design.

A few of his elemental designs could translate, most likely being the fire/lava Crunch.

Something inspired by his Titans and Mind over Mutant designs, specifically with the scars and more cyborg arm.

Zam:

Not much inspiration here, but they seem to like giving him dog motifs so that’s something.

Then again, maybe Zam would work better with a xenomorph inspired skin.

Real Velo:

Of course, hopefully we get Emperor Velo XXVII as a racer one day, but if not... skin based on it?

These alien characters can come in many colours so there’s something (same can apply to Zem). lol. Give me a purple Velo if you want to tack on a skin so I can be reminded of another purple Steve Blum voiced character (okay Blum doesn’t voice him in Nitro Fueled but whatever Garazeb Orrelios FTW).

N. Trance:

Some concepts here could be used. That weird black suit could be a form I guess.

Cracked egg. The link shows a Twinsanity idea where Evil Crash would eat from his head like an actual egg, so you could have the bandage barely covering a blatant crack, lol, or even just cracks by themselves without that.

Krunk:

Lots of potential colourful ornaments and primate inspirations.

Nash:

They’re taking fish inspirations, so they could look there.

Geary:

A black Geary? Or maybe even just a Silver Geary? Honestly any metal like bronze, copper, platinum, etc could work.

Tawna:

No. I know what some of you are probably thinking, but no.

Baby T:

Just give me a skin with feathers. Do whatever colours you like for his variants, just give me at least one with feathers, preferably something like a down or emu feathers.

Spyro:

You have all his different Reignited skins, just mine them. Even sunglasses one. :P

(From now we’re in purely speculative territory) Komodo Moe:

Obviously outfits that would complement Komodo Joe.

Dr Nitrus Brio:

You have his weird grey skinned version from Twinsanity, I guess.

His Mind over Mutant outfit could be different enough to warrant a skin?

Green monster N. Brio, that being if he doesn’t become his own character like baby Crash and Coco (honestly with those at least Cortex and N. Tropy should get baby versions lol).

Since the MCU is all the rage, maybe a Professor Hulk inspired skin in between his normal look and his green monster look.

Like N. Gin a Frankenstein’s monster N. Brio would be cool, or even an Igor look. Or maybe he could have a Frankenstein look like I suggested with Cortex?

Nina Cortex:

Obviously you have her Tag Team Racing skin (if Von Clutch and Pasadena come same applies to them I guess).

Besides her original appearance you could have her Titans one, which is different enough.

You also have the version for her that would’ve been developed for CNK if she made it in.

Rilla Roo:

This is really scraping the bottom of the barrel I admit, but I swear I heard about some cancelled game idea where he was gonna be in a circus getup?

Lab Assistant:

Look, the most iconic enemy from the Crash games could get a whole host of looks. Just look up any outfit they appear in, and boom, skin.

Like, if they had gone through with the disaster/rescue training, you could have gotten some development like Baguko sulking about how this is lame because it's not beating up villains and he doesn't want to confront his flaws, but then he does surprisingly well at some part of it (surprising even himself), or he saves someone and discovers he's actually happy to have done it, or the like.

Another good idea, take some of those eraser tape bandages and work them into Beku's outfit. It'd look cool, you could fnagle the rules so that the tape would only partially restrict his powers so he could fight without killing himself, and then you could get some cool visuals like when he takes off the bandages you know he's about to get serious. wouldn't it be cool if this show did things with the elements it introduced

electric boi is hurr couldn't you have asked for aiming gear in your outfit, but eraser dick couldn't have fitted like an eye moisturizer system into his goggles. Oh yeah, that highlights another problem with the outfit thing, if the kids think of an improvement they want to make later like adding some absolutely vital gadget like that, when are they allowed to do that? If it's limited then you're holding them back, but if it's at any time there's going to be some asshole who keeps asking for endless design tweaks.

If you end it when someone is just being convinced to do something or building up to do something then come back and they haven't done it yet, it just looks like they've been waffling and wasting time like a fucjing idiot.
