My thoughts on Qibli!
I decided to just write out my opinions and thoughts about Qibli, which understandably not everyone may agree with which is okay! If you don't like my interpretations or ideas no worries, I am not here to argue or make you feel the same as I do! I just want to write it out for fun :3
So I personally dislike Qibli. He's my least favorite character in WoF and I also was very disappointed about Moonbli being the end result canonically.
But I also feel like there was a ton of opportunity for his character that would've made me enjoy him more. Here's a bit of a long-ish list (also note I haven't slept in a bit so if some of this doesn't make sense I apologize):
1. I think he shouldn't have been the last book in arc 2. I feel like he was too preoccupied with thoughts about Moon and his overthinking to really have had any character growth. It seemed he was supposed to come off as witty and sharp but considering how much he overthinks it doesn't seem like he should be that sharp at all. I think he needed to overcome his overthinking when he met Thorn, he could still have doubts which would make sense as a struggle, fear of becoming as worried as he used to be.
2. I almost think maybe he should've been a side character only for helping the others, essentially the role Kinkajou played, and I feel like she should've had the last book. Though I did love her surprise being the hero moment at the end of Arc 2 and I don't think it would work from her perspective.
3. I loved him as a character when he was away from Moon. For me they felt very forced and he seemed too distracted by her when they were together. In Turtle's book he was fantastic as a friend and goofball, he wasn't near Moon for some of it which made him seem genuine and like his own dragon.
4. I like Winterwatcher more cause of the setup they had and the parallels between Winter and Moon and Darkstalker and Clearsight. As well as Arctic and Foeslayer. Seeing how Qibli was supposed to be so close to being just as bad as Darkstalker and it felt like he wasn't going to choose to save anyone, he hesitated too much for my liking and it was too sudden to be character growth. It feels like Moon and him became the reflection of Darkstalker and Clearsight, which I don't like. And avoiding Winterwatcher as perhaps a "let's not repeat mistakes of the past" is strange to me. With Moon and Winter it felt like they could work together to repair their opinions of each other's tribes. They definitely need to work out their feelings and communication but I see them becoming a very healthy reincarnated version of Arctic and Foeslayer in a way. They could've proved Darkstalker wrong and Darkstalker wouldn't have approved of it as much as he likely did with Moon and Qibli, likely seeing them as himself and Clearsight which I hate to think maybe he had satisfaction in perhaps. Though this is all obviously my own vision of things too.
5. I also think Qinter could've worked out well. They had cute moments together and it would give Moon freedom from HAVING to choose. She didn't have to choose anyone, it was strange it seemed she had no choice and was pressured into it, as if she were to be with someone forever against her will. I believe she deserved more time to get to know the 2 and maybe an obligatory ending would've been best where nothing was confirmed ship wise.
6. Qinterwatcher I also quite enjoy. I think the 3 of them make a great dynamic without pressure to choose one over another. This is the case where Moon and Qibli work without throwing Winter under the bus either. (Yes I know some view him as mean especially to Moon at the end, but I think he was having a valid reaction to the horrible situation, to a dragon that wanted his entire tribe dead. He just didn't have the words or tools to explain in the moment since he was not complete with his character arc and growth. He was improving slowly for Moon, though arguably he should improve for himself which I think is what was implied at the end of Arc 2 but it could still work with him and Moon together. I also read him as being not genuinely mean, just a hurt teen with too much societal pressure on him constantly who needed support from someone he cared about and saw being manipulated.) Anyway the 3 of them makes me happy the second most to Winterwatcher since no one is left out and that can also be thrown back in DS's face as a Ha! Didn't have to choose! Too.
7. Again I think Qibli just thought about Moon way too much. He could still crush on her but it felt like it was impairing his judgment. I wouldn't say it gave me creepy vibes necessarily, just unhealthy attachment that could eventually turn into a similar situation as DS and CS.
8. Qibli had potential as a villain or unwilling henchman. I think if he'd been charmed a bit more by DS then he could've outwardly shown more similarities to DS, cause honestly I didn't see the similarities very much at all until they were thrown in at the end. I also think he could've caused a major problem on accident the way Peril did. Trying to do something good but resulting in making the situation worse would've been great and taken his focus away from Moon more.
9. He needed more interaction with other characters. He needed to spend more time with Turtle, Kinkajou, and Peril, all of which he just kind of didn't hang out with that much which is strange considering how he wanted others to like him so why not spend time with the rest of the group more so they'll like you more?
For now that's all I have to say about Qibli. He's my least favorite but I don't absolutely hate him, he's still a good character. Just mostly disappointed in the way things could've turned out but didn't.
Anyway if you've got anything you'd like to mention or share about him and your own thoughts or anything to add on to my own feel free! I'm interested to hear about those who do like him more and why, as well as why others who don't like him don't. The only thing I ask is to not bring shipping wars into this and to remain polite of others opinions cause I welcome many different ships and ideas and love to see different perspectives! Thank you :3

Qibli has a lot more layers than the fandom is willing to give him credit for. He isn't an extrovert party person. He's an insecure character who puts on a persona and constantly tries being the funny guy so that others will like him. He's afraid of being alone, and worse, being seen for how he really is. He was taught to be ashamed of who he was by Cobra, Vulture, and his siblings. He repressed his past and tries his best to be good and likable in the eyes of everyone he meets because he doesn't want to be known as a lonely, pathetic dragon.
It's why his confrontation with Darkstalker is the end of his arc. At the beginning of the arc, he would've absolutely 100% taken the offer. He wants animus magic because he views it as a means so that he doesn't have to pretend to be this charming guy. Others will just love him. He mirrors that of Darkstalker. However, unlike Darkstalker, Qibli grows and changes. He realizes that he doesn't need to change anybody else for them to like him. He's already got friends who love him for who he is.
But even then that still leaves room to explore his tendency to put himself down and view others (namely Moon and Thorn) as higher than he is. Putting them on a pedestal. His mind is still deeply anxious and afraid. He isn't "smart" because he is constantly observant. That's a symptom from him growing up in a terrible place and needing to always be vigilant of everything unless he gets a sharp barb right in his skull. Blah blah blah all that stuff. It makes for a good starting point of a fanfic, no?

Unsorted WOF thoughts part 14:
A lot of parental figures in fiction are characterized by fandoms as having the urge to adopt any traumatized children that they come across. But it isn't very often that you see a character whose canonical, IMMEDIATE instinct is to adopt someone.
Thorn is one such character, and that's why the dynamic between her and Qibli is unbeatable.

Thinking about the scene in Darkness of Dragons where Winter was treated as if he was being irrational and mean when he was rightfully livid that Darkstalker casted a spell to wipe out his whole fucking race, which he obviously didn't tell anyone. He tried to wipe out an entire tribe because of his issues with his father. And when the character who is part of that tribe (who, by the way, had a brainwashing spell put on him to make him completely oblivious) is angry about this he's seen as just being "SELF-RIGHTEOUS"???? I get that moon had no way of knowing that, so from her perspective he was yelling at her for no reason, but like if some giant ass wizard dragon tried to wipe out my entire race I think It'd be okay if I yelled about it

⚠️(SPOILERS TO IF YOU HAVEN'T READ BOOK 6 MOONRISING)⚠️Ok so, I heard about Tui confirming Carnelian and Moonwatcher were going being mates before deciding to kill off Carnelian. Well Carnelian is one of my F A V O R I T E characters out of two and had sooo much potential! If Moon and Carnelian DID become mates the whole love triangle of Winter and Qibli and Moon just wouldn't be an issue! Moon and Carnelian being together leaving Winter and Qibli single... Winter has also already been confirmed Bi and those two would make sense! An in my opinion Winter x Moon would be kinda toxic or akward alot with some "good" moments. Carnelian seems like she's sensible and protective which seeme PERFECT for Moon! She can reassure her on things and make sure she's safe and keep her from doing regretful things! Moon can do all the same and also calm her down and balance her anger and possible trauma of the war out. So.. What if Carnelian GUARDED Moon when the explosion went off? Secret crush for a bit but sh pushed the thoughts away til protecting moon she finally released the thoughts along the line of being scared to lose another person she loves, what happened during war to cause this fear??who did she lose before?? How?? And when Moon hears this EVERYTHING CHANGES! Carnelian after finding her future telling (not YET mind reading) really angry but doesn't leave Moons side and heals her up instead of Turtle and EVENTUALLY Moon tells her of the Mind reading with her FURIOUS but she gets over it eventually and they go to the mountains at night to talk about it.

i feel like qibli should have been more morally grey. like there’s no way this guy has good morals and i hate how he’s written as the good guy compared to winter.

my official take on the moon/qibli/winter love triangle is that winterwatcher is a much grander, epic romance, and moonbli is a much more level, sweet-and-simple romance, but ultimately i think it was a better decision to have the latter be the canon romance in a series primarily marketed towards children and teens than fall into the "bad boy" romance trope, and instead romanticize the earnest, genuine, sweet relationship
obviously there's way more nuance to this involving internalized/unconscious bias, and winter doesn't even REALLY fit into the "bad boy" archetype, but purely based on genre conventions, the gruff, rude, brooding, tortured hero VERY often falls into that category, and at the ages of 7-14 most of us were very LIKELY to be romanticizing that archetype, which again is very often treated as interchangeable with the "abusive bad boy" trope, and while i might have a few gripes with the writing of moonbli and i ENJOY winterwatcher a whole lot, i DO appreciate the more gentle, "safe" romance being treated as the ideal, rather than the tense and angst-filled nature of the alternative

Unsorted WOF thoughts part 6:
It's 100% canon that Kinkajou, Moon, and Qibli all agree that Winter is pretty as hell. But like, with very different energies.
Kinkajou, schoolgirl crush: *dreamy sigh* He's so handsome~
Qibli, repressed crush: *depressed sigh* Moon would never pick me over Winter. He's so much better than me at making those tortured expressions...
Moon, fully realized crush: *resigned but still in love sigh* He's such an idiot.
