I want to like Mac so bad. He's funny, he's charming, he really does care about Freya, and he's pretty down to earth. But holy fuck is he an emotionally constipated jackass.

I thought the plot of this was cute. 29-year-old curvy virgin FMC learns about sex with her hot famous athlete best friend. The banter between them was hilarious. I loved reading their conversations and their bickering. Definite highlight of the book. I did not love reading how far Mac's head was up his ass.

He was throwing jealous fits in the beginning of the book! And it still took him way too long to realize he actually fucking cared about her. I hated him when he broke her heart. Everything about his decision made sense, but I hated how carelessly he treated her. And how purposefully blind he was to her being in love with him. The things he said were plain cruel and I didn't know how they would come back from that.

I'm happy she didn't take him back the first time he went back to her. Everything about Mac was a mess. I don't know how I feel about them at the end when they're happy because he still has a lot of shit to sort out. But at least he's not lying to himself anymore.

Mac had some really good moments. I loved how he called Freya on her bullshit with how she saw herself. I loved that he was flat out attracted to her. I loved how they grew together, how they interacted privately and publicly.

I don't know, I went into this expecting fun, cute, and sexy and got heartache, death, and angst. Was the angst worth it? …maybe? I think it was. I'm still trying to figure that out. I just know I wish he'd woken up long before it happened in the book. Freya didn't deserve half the shit he threw at her.

I've been meaning to change the rating for a while now. Although I love the book, I can admit that it has too many flaws. I couldn't stand the queer baiting. I don't think the kiss between Agatha and Sophie should have been included especially when the author planned to make Agatha choose the prince in the end anyway. It was also weird how he tried to justify the kiss by making it be done out of sisterly love.

Neon Gods by Katee Robert

Things I liked about this book:

The introduction of the world. I read Electric Idol first, so I was already familiar with this modern take on the Greek Gods, but to see how it was established initially was really interesting. The reader could fall into the world and follow the characters and the answers would come organically.

The relationship between the sisters is one of my favorites. How Persephone deals with everyone really speaks of their relationship and how it differs from her relationship with her mother.

Hades is amazing. He's the definition of battered soul. I really loved seeing the lower side through his eyes and how they established themselves. It was really neat.

The smut, as always, was hot.

The puppies are fucking adorable. They can be in all future books.

Things I did not like about this book:

Persephone is a brat; Hades is not a brat tamer. Which means the D/s aspect of their relationship was a miss for me. I kept waiting for him to actually deny her, to prevent her from topping from the bottom, to teach her she can't get her way all the time. He didn't. It wasn't bad, not at all. Like I said, I enjoyed the smut. But from how he views himself and his kinks, I was definitely anticipating a harder hand at moments, and for Persephone to not get her way every single scene.

The ending is soooooo cliche. So fucking cliche. Aren't these supposed to be dark romances? So where's the dark?? [This point is a massive spoiler in my original review and since I cannot add spoiler tags on tumblr, I've rewritten it to remove the spoiler.]

It's...still a modern Hades/Persephone retelling. I do not like modern Hades/Persephone retellings. As much as I enjoyed this book, I can't get away from that. I kept waiting for Hades to show the dark side he believes he has, but he doesn't have it. He just has a poor view of himself.

All in all, good book. I liked it. Honest, every time Eros or Psyche were on screen (or mentioned), I just wanted to read more of them, but that's not this book's fault. All on me for reading out of order. But it's a good setup for the world and I can see me rereading it down the line.
