could you go a bit in depth as to why platonic dualism is fascist?
honestly u should've asked me this in a brownout in 2018 but ok. and this is like, semi unserious because fascism is a set of material conditions and relations, not an abstract ideology. but i would posit basically three main avenues through which these things relate:
the notion of moral agency residing in a 'soul' that is yoked to a passive and corrupted 'body'; the idea these are two opposed and ontologically distinct substances or aspects of being, wherein one must overcome or discipline the other; the positioning of bodily & material human existence as corrupt & corrupting, & a distraction or perversion of a 'truer' spiritual or transcendent dimension (see: the historical relationships between fascisms & gnosticisms, esotericisms, certain body ideals, &c)
the use of platonist ideas in political philosophy, & here i'm not litigating what plato himself thought because that's a complicated historical question begging certain forms of both literary analysis and contextualisation; rather i'm talking about eg the idea of the 'noble lie' and the philosopher-king as expounded in the republic, and how such ideas continue to play a role in modern reactionary political discourses seeking to naturalise inequality, authoritarianism, and oligarchy, including by appeals to timocracy
the use of appeals to 'greco-roman' (lol) history and politics as a way of construing the modern 'west' as a kind of glorious cultural and democratic tradition, and the use of this rhetorical construct in discourses of white nationalism & 'european' identity, where appeals to plato & platonism have varying degrees of actual engagement with the text or its historical context, & are more driven by the notion of a great western pantheon or literary canon, from which transhistorical and universal wisdom is to be gleaned (often this process occurs in conjunction with nostalgic and reactionary theorising about modern culture as 'degenerate' & in need of restoration or regeneration by, again, the influence of noble and enlightening cultural forces, sometimes with distinct flavours of self-help; see also: the relationship between modern reactionaries & eg platonically inflected stoicisms)

365 Days of Alla Antica, Day #2
Tumblr media
(Note, the above map is still largely a Work in Progress!)
Tumblr media
“The Oshaym is a curiosity for those who dwell on its myriad coastlines — that is, a curiosity much like the Sun, the Eye of Aryohl, or any other casual phenomenon. It is at once a place of bounty, bringing up from its depths fish and whale oil, as well as lost treasures from ancient empires, whilst also being a vast sea of stinging salt that harbours countless dangers in the forms of the Uhdinnim and the dreaded Zroh. The Oshaym at once provides and imperils, protects and undermines, defines and defies.”
Tumblr media
The Oshaym — meaning "Bone Sea" in the primary trade language, Dabru, spoken across the Nepshe Confederacy — is a vast sea connecting to the outside ocean only via a small channel running through the Gap of Inkyss at its western-most edge. It is named the Bone Sea for the spectral salt-encrusted white towers that occasionally thrust up from its depths, and can be seen in its shallower reaches, the last evidence of a once enormous ancient empire that spanned the salt flats of the Oshaym before it was flooded. Since the explosion of Hror Inkyss millenia ago, those same salt flats have played host to the high-salinity sea, allowing new nations to form along its banks.
The Oshaym is largely under the control of the Protectorate of Kaisor, the chief state of the Nepshe Confederacy, though their rivals in the Protectorate of Azriqor control some of the south-west coast, whilst the Zholik Timocracy and the scattered tribes of the Jugvod-Lumbad control portions of the eastern stretch known as the Mayym. The only free archipelago within the Oshaym, outside of these larger polities, is the Aħ-Ħsari Syndicate, who hold out from their home of Meħbe-set Dujru.
Tumblr media
The Oshaym is, quite clearly, the Pyrric take on the Mediterranean Sea, with lots of inspiration drawn from its folkloric elements, especially those taken from my own culture of Ammi Maltese. Tales of Atlantis inspire the Uhdinnim Empire, the Zanclean flood inspired its downfall, and the scattering of the Late Bronze Age Collapse inspired the different peoples around the rim. The entirety of Alla Antica began because I wanted to imagine what the real world would be like if Carthage won the Punic Wars, rather than Rome, and whilst it has gone VERY far from that original inspiration, the first foundations of that were laid in the Oshaym which still exist in the setting today...

Quote
Democracy can function, says Thomas Paine (to pick a spokesman for the US founders), because human beings are fundamentally educable, and if given a good teacher, a good reading list, and some newspapers, all human beings, or at least the overwhelming majority of them, will become capable of wise judgment and self-rule.  One’s civic duty is not to identify the wise minority and put them in power, but to disseminate the tools of education so the majority can become wise.  This thesis is opposed to aristocracy, to oligarchy, to timocracy, even to most forms of meritocracy, since education isn’t supposed to prepare people to be sorted out by the exam but to demonstrate that human beings are so excellent that everyone can pass it.

Plato’s Republic: Law and Democracy
By Lizbeth Herrera Gomez, University of Chicago, Class of 2026
July 28, 2023
Tumblr media
Plato’s Republic centers around justice and governance, with a focus on five different regimes: aristocracy, timocracy, oligarchy, democracy, and tyranny. Democracy, in fact, is both undermined and safeguarded by the law because it protects the democratic man’s private freedom. This private freedom undermines democracy because it allows its citizens to do whatever they want, even if it’s hostile to the law. At the same time, the law safeguards this regime because it uses moderation to check that private freedom.

Three kinds of constitution
Three kinds of constitution
There are three kinds of constitution: monarchy, aristocracy, and that based on property, timocratic. The best is monarchy, the worst timocracy. Monarchy deviates to tyranny; the king looks to his people’s interest; the tyrant looks to his own. Aristocracy passes over to oligarchy by the badness of its rulers who distribute contrary to equity what belongs to the city; most of the good things go…

Synonym for plutocracy
Tumblr media
The military chiefs assume the control of the state, although they do not impose rules on the citizens. Stratocracy refers to a system of governance that is under military control. The ideology advocates for the leadership of the strong over the weak. Kratocracy is no longer a viable form of governance in modern societies due to the popularity of democracy. Kratocracy is a system of governance in which those who are strong enough to seize power take over the state activities through coercion, deception, and persuasion. Former U.S president Jimmy Carter and Noam Chomsky once described the United States as a democratic plutocracy. Ancient plutocracies include the Roman Empire and the Italian cities of Venice, Genoa, and Florence. Plutocracy advocates for the control of the society by the wealthy at the expense of democracy and equality. Plutocracy or plutarchy is a form of oligarchy in which society is ruled and controlled by a few wealthy citizens. The members of the council were from wealthy families, military generals, influential businessmen and large landowners. Aristocracy evolved in Ancient Greece where a council of noble people was chosen as part of the Senate. AristocracyĪristocracy is a system of governance in which power is vested in a few individuals considered the ruling class. Oligarchy exists in different forms such as aristocracy, plutocracy, kratocracy, stratocracy, timocracy, meritocracy, technocrachy, geniocracy, noocracy, theocracy, kritarchy and patricracy. The Athenians even drew judges and jurors from the public and vested them with the power to ensure justice and overrule the Assembly.įorms of Government by Oligarchic Attributes In fourth century BCE, Athenians revolted against the oligarchical government and restored democracy by selecting government officers from large groups of adult volunteers. Many political theorists believe that modern-day oligarchies might be mistaken for democracy because despite elections, power is still held within the hands a of select few. A majority of today’s de jure democratic governments are de facto oligarchies since they are ruled by a small group of people from powerful and influential families who have shared interests. Today the system is better known as plutocracy. The term “oligarchy” was pioneered by Aristotle to refer to the rule of the rich. Oppression is used to subdue those who rise against the state. The majority of oligarchies are known to be tyrannical, relying on the submission and obedience of the public. The control of oligarchic states is passed from one generation to the other, although inheritance of the family wealth is not a necessary condition. The class of people in power is distinguished by wealth, family ties, nobility, military or religious control. An oligarchy is a form of governance in which administrative power is vested in a select few people.
