I FINALLY finished my Tiny Octonauts AU drawings!!

Got a TINY (heh) bit lazy towards the end just because they all took so LONG to make. This is my first time drawing most of the octonauts, so their designs are probably gonna change a LOT. I'll make a post explaining this AU more probably tomorrow, but school just started today for me, so no promises. I'm also gonna make more of these drawings, both with my own OCs and the octoagents, as well. EVENTUALLY. I'm not gonna say soon because it took me over two weeks just to finish this first one-

Made a Shellington. Took me about 3 hours, start to finish. I'll probably add his hat patch later.

First encounters

Welcome to the first story of the nom-onauts universe! first to fall prey to the instincts is barnacles. Its trauma time!!

“I remember a good ghost story me grandad told when I was just a wee kitt’n.” Kwazii said while he and peso walked slowly down the halls of the octopod, about to head off to bed. Peso looked over, always up for a story even if Kwazii’s always sounded so scary. Without needing peso to say anything Kwazii started telling the story.

“In ancient times many pirate crews would have to be careful where they sailed to avoid monsters and beasties of the dark. But ghosts were a different story. drawn in on how close crews were, and to haunt the ships of pirates past and treasure hidden. This ghost I tell ye about is known as… the hungry ghost!” Kwazi started pausing for suspense before somewhat jumpscaring Peso with the name. Peso jumped and swallowed.

“Th-the hungry ghost?!” Peso asked Kwazii. 

“Aye! Tale says that the closer the crew became with each other, the more likely the hungry ghost would come! It would possess one of the crew to try and eat the others! The care and love of the crew making it jealous and hungry for that love! Even me ol’ grandad wasn’t immune to it and nearly ate his first mate!” Kwazii finished with a grand gesture. 

“B-but How would they even eat each other? like, trying to r-rip them to pieces?!” Peso asked the two now stopped in the hallway in front of the bed pod travel shoots.

“Even worse matey!” kwazi said, leaning in and somewhat looming over Peso. “The ghost has mysterious abilities that allows the possessed to shrink their own crewmates!” He said waving a paw toward the ceiling then making a pinching motion. Peso shook at that. “And worse of all the hungry ghost would make the one possessed eat the other whole! Sometimes in one big gulp!” Kwazii finished his story with an exaggerated gulp sound after miming holding something above his head and dropping it into his mouth. Peso jumped at that, eyes wide at the implications. 

“B-but, th-there isn't actually a hungry ghost… Is there Kwazii?” Peso asked, looking wordly up to his teammate. 

“Ye, bet yer flippers there is! But fear not, I’ll protect ya matey!” Kwazii assured the penguin who looked grateful to his pirate friend before looking around one more time and hopping into the travel shoot. “In fact I'll protect everyone on the octopod from that scallywag if they ever show themselves.” Kwazii said in a determined voice. He patted himself on the back for a good story and headed off to his travel shoot. Off to a good night’s sleep.

It was dark on the ship as it was night. But that wasn't an issue for Kwazii with his sharp eye sight, despite only using one eye usually. The humanoid cat walked down the halls having been awoken by an odd, sudden sound. A yelp perhaps?

It had come from the tube to his left so without hesitation he leaped down, following the source, yet the odd sounds seemed to get quieter? A voice?

It all went silent as he exited the sliding tube into the library. The gentle lighting was off and all that could be seen was in front of the large window looking out into the dark sea, faint tendrils of moonlight filtering in. A shadow was hunched over just past the window. 

Sensing something was off about things Kwazii snuck forward and down the stairs. There was a muffled sound coming from the hunched figure, along with growls? Kwazii thought over all his pirate monster stories as he crept closer. But nothing like this came to mind except…. But it couldn’t be, no one had been acting off. The only. Only person that might even have the slightest hint of possession was..

“...captain?”

As he had drawn closer and in his mind, the pieces all came crashing together as the familiar blue hat and outfit came into view. The hunched figure was captain barnacles. And at Kwazii's very quiet and nervous question he turned. Kwazii's blood ran cold. 

The captain even when hunched was a good head or two taller than the cat. His eyes almost blank with an unreadable expression as something pink squirmed in his hands and mouth. A muffled voice, a voice that Kwazii now recognized, sounded from the captain's cheeks as he slurped up the rest of the tentacles of professor inkling, swallowing thickly by throwing his head back. A small bulge traveling down the throat, horrifyingly illuminated by the moonlight. 

Now, Kwazii has been in many dangerous and crazy situations that would leave many quaking in their boots. But this, His captain, his friend, had just undoubtedly eaten another close friend in the dead of night. And Kwazii was scared. So he turned and ran, he would beat himself up for it later, but that wasn’t his captain. That was a monster. And He could have been next. So he bolted up the stairs diving into the travel chute, tripping over his feet as he scrambled to the launch bay computer, slamming the octo-alarm.

I really want to see you draw shellington with the Vegimals aka his kids and everyone's first reactions to the Vegimals!

Note: Peso isn’t here because this all takes place before he joined

When the Vegimals first hatched, Shellington was astonished by these fascinating creatures.

And then reality set in

How was he going to tell the rest of the crew?

On top of this now he had to take care of these little guys. Give them names, feed them, ect.

Welcome to parenthood Shellington

He was nervous about the crew getting scared, or worse wanting the Vegimals to be released back into the ocean, so he kept his care for them a secret. (Although he wasn’t particularly subtle)

Soon Captain Barnacles noticed how sluggish and overworked Shellington had become and decided to check on him, only to be met with a small little creature thrusted into his arms by Shellington.

The lab was in total chaos and Shellington wasn’t looking too well.

Even with a very brief explanation from Shellington, the Captain could see how exhausted he was. And the Vegimals didn’t seem dangerous, just a bit of a handful.

So he made the decision to brief in the other Octonauts.

They were all shocked by the Vegimals, and had so many questions.

But Captain Barnacles made it very clear the main priority was to help Shellington. Luckily, Inkling found a few baby books in his big library.

They all joined Shellington in the lab bringing fish biscuit formula, blankets, Tweak had made little beds, Inkling brought a few books for Shellington, and they all stayed with him to help out with the Vegimals.

Shellington was very touched by his crew’s compassion, so much so he fell asleep.

The captain didn’t mind though, and they all kept watch over their new crew members while Shellington got some well overdue rest.

And by the time Peso joined, they Vegimals were very much a part of the crew, and he was briefed in about them and to not be startled by them.

Finally finished these drawings! I got a bit lazy with the shading, lol. I definitely need to draw the other octonauts as small little guys, too, but I just had to draw a whole separate thing for Inkling (partially bc he's my friend's favorite character, but mostly I just love the idea of a tiny little octopus buddy)

Since he doesn't have a beak in the show, I feel like he'd just be squishy, like one of those mochi fidgets

I doubt Inkling would enjoy being tiny. He's just too small to get things done in the library and has to be carried around any time he needs to get somewhere quickly

I'm thinking of trying to write a whole story about Shellington accidentally making a shrinking potion and the rest of the crew having to deal with the effects while he tries to make an antidote. It'll probably never make it past drafts, though 😅

How to feel tiny

Sometimes, regressing can be tricky. A lot of the first few years of life focus a lot on learning. If you have already learned what the material, your grown-up brain might want to take over, making it hard to enjoy toddler activities.

🟦If you want the experience of learning preschool/kindergarten material again, try learning your shapes, colors, the alphabet, months of the year, or days of the week in another language! You can use fun songs or games to help.

🖍️If you want to experience developing motor skills again, try using your non dominate hand. You can try coloring, learning to write your name, or do basic scissor worksheets. (Please be careful with the scissors!)

🐻If you want to explore and learn science, try learning about animals. Shows like Wild Kratts and Octonauts can be genuinely educational for "grown up" brains. You can also check out books about animals from the library!

🫂Learn social-emotional and coping skills that are appropriate for children. There are many YouTube videos for yoga or meditation for kids. Shows such as Bluey, Author, or Carl the collector are some of my favorites and focus on social skills.

☀️If you want to feel physically tiny, try getting on the floor. Remember when your body was small and everything around you looked big? That was perspective! You can achieve something similar by being on the ground. Just make sure to listen to your body and take breaks if it hurts. You can also cover yourself with a blanket to focus less on your size.

I’m too old to be watching Octonauts, but I do not care because you can never be too old for anything and this show was kinda fire.

I was watching it with a friend last summer, and Season 2, Episode 10a “Manatees” was hilariously insane and I just had to make a little comic about it. (Plus this fandom is tiny and dead)
