something about characters who are not necessarily doomed by the narrative but definitely doomed by their jobs

Something something, Jon and Sam both drawn to the Magnus Institute by traumatic and paranormal events in their youth, always looking for answers, never knowing when to stop, and this being what condemns them.

had a realization. remember in tma s5 when jon talks about how it would've been nice for he and martin to have been together without the entities, and martin basically says "but we wouldn't have gotten together because without the entities we never would've bonded the way we did"??
well. sam and celia are the opposite of that. if they were just normal coworkers in a boring normal job they could've had a regular normal relationship from the start ("I really did like you") except because of the Horrors that possibility was precluded.
the existence of the eldritch horrors are what caused jon and martin's relationship to develop, and the existence of the eldritch horrors are also what caused sam and celia's relationship to be doomed to fall apart.

Yall btw if my Peter and Elias and Martin and jon don’t look similar enough to the point where it’s clear that if Martin and Jon were allowed to grow old they would’ve looked like kinder versions of them then I’ll throw a fucking fit

When a dangerous entity infiltrated the Magnus Institute, Jonah intentionally held back on pushing the fire alarm and called one his employees being killed and replaced as a result of it a "pleasant bonus".
When a dangerous entity infiltrated the OIAR, Lena yelled at the woman who let them in, stressing that introducing them to her coworkers was a danger to their lives as well, and demanded for a clear line to be kept between the horrors and the employees.
Even if Lena does turn out to be an evil mastermind, this interaction alone makes her kinder than Jonah ever was.

The similarities between Agnes Montague's death and the end of MAG 200 just hit me. In MAG 139 it is proposed that she dies:
Tumblr media
Agnes Montague's story reveals that avatars can, and do, feel emotions. The episode ends with Jon's focus on his feelings for Martin, which structurally links the concepts of these characters together, in my opinion. The fact that Jon and Martin's story also ends with hope:
Tumblr media
I think it reinforces the tragedy of what it means to be an avatar, because there remains enough humanity in them to have regrets about the past - which is tragic - but also enough humanity to believe in such an abstract emotion, like hope, enough to act on it. Their final acts.
