I feel “male power fantasy”, as opposed to any gender “power fantasy” is slim. That said whilst I’m sure there was extreme black and white binaries in Esmoroth, nothing we see of it, both from the show & deleted scenes, indicates it was a male power fantasy from someone whom has experienced several male power fantasy works. I can expand on that difference if you want?

As I said on the post, 'but its 2024 so if people dont know or like my stance on Simon by now idk what youre doing here' like i dont know why people feel obligated to quibble with me on my own interpretations on my own blog.

But let's discuss this in good faith. Agreed, we don't know enough about the stories and their content to make an actual judgement. but again I bring up subtext.

Like i whole 'rightful king returns' trope usually involves someone getting power and respect that they deserve due to something innate about them like their lineage. (I mentioned Tolkien as a better example, Aragorn has the lineage but also earns his role by respecting and valuing others).

When we actually see the book Rise of the True King it's after his takeover of the Apex. It seems pretty clearly intended as a message to Grace that he's in power now. He also later claims that Grace owes him "everything"

Also another thing I did not mention is that Grace and Simon both assumed Amelia as the Conductor was a man, bc Grace only had a brief encounter and she filtered her voice. However, after meeting her and realizing she is the Conductor, Simon still has trouble believing it. When he tries rewriting Grace's memory of it, he still tries to imagine the Conductor as a large, powerful figure that he addresses as male, saying "I never thought I'd get to see the Conductor with my own eyes. He's perfect. Everything finally makes sense again."

While this could be read as him trying to back to their old beliefs, again there is also subtext of him denying what both Grace and Amelia say, saying Grace was being brainwashed and insisting the powerful figure they had built up was a man.

Look, like I said last ask, it is very hard for me to read Simon's character of lashing out at mainly women, feeling entitled to Grace's loyalty (which she was, she just started caring for Hazel too), and refusing to examine his violent and prejudiced worldview without seeing some latent sexism. But yeah again, my own blog, my own thoughts, and let's leave it at that.

Even after spending time with Miguel, successfully becoming his boyfriend and getting on his good side, there's the one thing you can get your mind off of; those damn fangs.

You and Miguel have been dating for a solid 5 months now. You still remember the day you got introduced to the spider society and met him. Those dark eyes that flash red, tall and broody, sharp talons that scrape against metal, swept back hair that might as well have swept you off your feet. No literally. The first day you went to meet him you tripped on air and fell straight into his arms. 

How did that manage to win his heart? Now that's the real anomaly. 

One thing you can't get over and can't seem to wrap your head around is his fangs. You’ve been told by him it's used to paralyze enemies when needed, and most of the time he forgets it’s there. But in your mind, you keep replaying the times when he talked, or his rare smiles and laughs reserved for only you. How does he eat with it? Did he ever bite himself when he goes on his rants? How does he not have a lisp with how big they are?

When the sharp fangs glints and it sends shivers down your body. Curiosity and arousal clouds you whenever Miguel talks, and it’s honestly distracting at team meetings.

“Hey, you there?” He snaps his fingers in front of you as you blink away the thoughts, realizing a couple of other Spideys in the briefing looking at you with squinted eyes. 

“Oh yeah- Sorry, pre-mission anxiety and all,” You tried to laugh it off, averting from Miguel's worried gaze. He knows you're capable, he knows you're strong, that's the reason why you're always with him on missions, why you're trusted with a team. But those flashing red eyes couldn't help but hesitate each time you leave the base. 

Miguel continues the brief, assigning teams to universes and anomalies. He sends you off with your teams while he leads his. Each team consists of two spideys, if the anomaly is a particularly notorious villain in their respective universes, Miguel would send three. You’re standing next to Jessica, her bike parked just meters from the portal. While the others had already jumped, Miguel stayed behind while Ben jumped first into the portal. The hum of Jessica’s bike startles you and breaks your eyes from staring at Miguel, and she seems to notice.

“Go ahead, go talk to him,” She nods, a small smile on her lips before she rides off into the portal. You sigh, with your boyfriend staying behind, he seems to have the same idea. 

You walk across the metal floor, Miguel standing just near his portal. “So, an easy one today, huh?” 

“Yeah, me and Ben can take care of him, it’s just another Doc Oct,” He checks something on his watch, the orange hologram lighting up. You can't help but notice it gleams against his fangs. 

“Alright, uhm-” You cough, alerting Miguel as he turns to you. “Be safe out there, babe,” 

The way you said those last words, too small for your usual cheerfulness, makes Miguel’s brows furrow. He reaches for your hand, softly holding them. “Hey, are you okay?”

“Huh? Oh yeah, I'm fine! Don't worry baby,” You smirk, patting his arm where he’s still holding your hand. “Stay safe, and come back home, okay?” 

Miguel tilts his head slightly, before his lips quirks, a ghost of a smile. “You too, my love,” 

And with that, Miguel turns and enters his portal, the circle closes as he disappears. You sigh, both relieved and frustrated somehow. You shook your head, trying to dissipate those thoughts, at least for the time being. Glancing at your portal, you take another breath, before running and leaping into it, another day of saving the multiverse.

“Okay, what's going on?” You turn to Jessica leaning on her bike, arms crossed and one brow raised. It’s the ‘Spill It’ face you’ve come to love, but also loathe when she uses it on you.

“What’s ‘what’ going on?” Jessica scoffs, tilting her head when your back is still facing her while you twip a web at the Lizard's jaw, the anomaly tied and secured, ready for transport. “Nothings going on,”

She sees you shrug as you turn around, her only response is to nod again, gauging an answer. Her eyes stare deep into you, making you gulp as you aver her sharp, questioning glare. A beat passes, your suit suddenly feels clammier than usual. You tug slightly at the part that hugs your neck, looking down at the street. 

“Okay fine!” You huff, a satisfied smirk from Jessica. “I’ve been thinking about Miguel-”

“That's not new sweetie,” She snickers, making you stumble on your words. 

“I’m- I know but it's not about him… I guess?”

“Go on…”

“Have you-” You huff, crossing your arms. “You’ve seen his fangs, right? Those sharp things,” You point to your own little fangs, which makes Jesicca hum.

“Hard not to,” She shrugs.

“You ever wonder how sharp they are?” You tilt your head, fully turning to Jessica. “Y’know it's pretty big, and pretty sharp, I wonder how he doesn't bite himself with it? Or how he doesn't have a lisp, or maybe he can retract them but then when he talks it’s always out so I don't know if he can do that, we’ve kissed a couple of times but I didn't feel those things-”

“Okay whoa there,” She chuckles, walking towards you. “I get it, cool fangs, you’re curious about them,” 

She places her hands on your shoulders, a grin on her lips. “That's what got you all distracted today?”

“Yeah… Sorry,” 

“Oh don't be kid, I get it,” She nods, before giggling. “Not ‘get it’ get it, but you're in love, and love makes curiosity and wonder, and I get that,” She pats your arms.

“Bring that up with Miguel, would’ya?” She grinned, a mischievous glint behind her goggles. You blink, realizing she has started walking back to her bike. You chuckle, a steady blush spreading on your cheeks.

“Y-yeah, I will,” You smile, shooting out webs to bring the anomaly back while Jasicca rides into the portal first.

Once the anomalies are stored in their cells and boxes, Miguel debriefs the others while you were making sure each anomaly is accounted for.

“I think that's all, right Lyla?” You nod to her small figure sitting on your shoulder. She looks at one of her holograms before nodding.

“Yep! All here,” Her holograms disappear as she glitches and changes to your right shoulder. She suddenly leans in, a dangerous smirk on her face. “So that's what’s up huh?”

You groan, flinching your shoulder which makes her hologram change to stand in front of you. “Lyla you know I hate it when you listen in,” 

“Hey I always listen in, y’know I’m online at all times,” She snickers. “Don't worry, your secret is safe with me,” 

You huff, which makes her laugh as you roll your eyes. You glance at Miguel, still talking with the other spideys, those distracting fangs just barely visible between his soft lips. 

“Sooo…” Lyla floats in front of you, again. “You plannin’ on saying anything?” 

She can practically hear the gears in your head turning, before you sigh and remove your mask, adjusting your ruffled hair. “I suggest you stay offline tonight,”

Lyla spots the blooming red that spreads across your face, at which she giggles mischievously. “Okay, whatever you say,” She shrugs before glitching to your right. “I'll just hang out with Margo then,” 

“Yeah, thanks Lyla,” A grateful smile on your lips. Lyla nods before she disappears and leaves you alone. 

Miguel has finally wrapped off the debrief and sent the others to do what they please since today's mission is over. The other spideys wave their farewell to you as they pass, you reply while you walk closer to your boyfriend. Jesica passes you, a sly smirk on her lips, before she pats your shoulder. You give her a small smile before nodding, and she’s on her way.

Miguel’s back is turned, busy with his monitor, wrapping up the day. His head tilts a bit, as he notices you're walking toward him. You pull one of the stray chairs to Miguel's platform and as if instincts, he sat down just as you pushed it behind him. His eyes are still scanning the monitors but he turns slightly towards you as you lean on the consoles. 

“Good job out there Miguel,” You smile, glancing at the screens.

“You too, as always,” His lips quirks, one arm rests on the chair while the other swipes at the screen. “Though I have seen some things we can improve on the teams. I haven't debriefed you yet like the others, so listen to me okay?” 

You nodded, crossing your arms into a more relaxed tone. “Good, so according to team three we need to-” 

And that's the last thing you hear before you turn to look at Miguel, catching that sharp glint of those fangs. Around you, Miguel usually lets his guard down, his way of letting you know he trusts you. So he talks more, his hands punctuate what needs to be punctuated, and those lips move wider. In other circumstances, listening to him would be easy, but with each word he spoke, a peak of those sharp fangs caught your attention instead. Miguel continues to point out the images on the screens, occasionally asking you a question to which you responded with a ‘Uhuh’ or ‘Yeah’. That seemed to satisfy Miguel until—

“-And that's to add the upgrades on your suit, what do you think?” 

“Uhuh,” 

“What?” Miguel retracts, tearing his eye away from the screens. “I asked about your suit?”

A beat passes, before you blink, realizing your boyfriend was staring, and shaking yourself out of the daze. “Huh? What did you ask?”

Miguel sighs, crossing his arms. Sadly those muscles adds another point to the distraction. “Were you even listening to me?” 

He stiffens, watches as you stand in front of him, one arm on the chair's headrest, completely trapping him in. Slowly, your other hand moves up, and settles on his jaw. Throughout the months of dating you, Miguel has never seen this side of you, never seen how bold you could be. Steady hands cup his jaw, your thumb gliding across his lips, before you press slightly. As if a switch is flipped, Miguel inhales sharply and parts his lips, inclining his head when you hold his chin. Your thumb moves over his lower set of fangs, before suddenly followed by your other hand, pushing his mouth open to expose his upper, sharper fangs. His eyes flashes and brows furrows slightly, surprised at the sight of your rapt expression, eyes scanning him.

There's a hint of fondness behind those usually irritated gazes as he looks at you before he sighs and opens his mouth to continue his question before you were overcome with the sudden urge to see. You lean off of the console and approach your boyfriend. “Sorry, Miguel I just have to-”

“Fascinating…” You lean closer, taking pride in the way Miguels is stunned, practically crushing the armrest under his claws. Your index pushes at his upper jaw, letting you get an eyeful of that part of Miguel you’ve been dreaming about. It reflects the blue lights in the room, your eyes widen at it. Your thumb touches its start before gliding down to the pointed end, Miguel pants lightly. How would they feel against my skin?

Your eyes roam up to the prominent blush on Miguel's cheeks, the red in his irises shakes. Slowly, you bring him closer, one hand stays on his chin while the other moves behind his head. His eyes flutter as you press your lips against his, his gasp allows you to slide your tongue inside. Carefully, you trace that sharp fang, making Miguel grunt, his hand suddenly gripped your wrist, pulling apart.

“Don't- It’s dangerous,” He says between pants, the blush coloring his beautiful complexion. 

“Paralysis, right?” You smirk, fingers playing at his curled strands. Miguel shivers then swallows hard. “How about we unwind from today,”

A glint in your eyes, watching as Miguel becomes putty between your hands, his blown-out pupils staring at you in reverence. You smirk, breath ghosting against his lips when you bring him closer again.

“Show me what those fangs do, baby,”

Can we talk about how, despite everything, you have managed to create a community where truth and fairness are a priority in the midst of a fandom where social hierarchy, black and white puritanical morality, and narrow-minded judgements were the norm?

And how fucking good it feels to know that just being honest and trying to point out double-standards and fighting back by being loud in support of nuanced, open-minded discussion and analysis instead of adding to the cycle of hating/lashing out has managed to craft a safe haven for people who think this way too?

Your haven may not be “popular” but it’s real and it’s an oasis for people who don’t weaponize their narrow morality or past experiences to justify bullying and lying and “calling out” every sign of flawed behavior in others.

I am glad that you really like the little "group" that self-organised around us the way you do, really.; Tbh I never expected it to ever become anything BUT us four (you, Val and Fantomette). However, not only other people tagged along with us, but we were also able to infect others with "put one's speaking against toxic kind of fans in the main tags" virus so now it is even EASIER for us to find each other!

Though to be honest, you guys only see me 'safe' because you are generally used to a kind of "moody" and complicated people in your lives. Before you guys met me, you've already dealt with relatives with hardcore depression and them dreaded "bad victims", so I was not someone outlandishly troublesome for you. Otherwise, ironically, whereas I attract people with my post, I am also the one who pushes them away by saying something heavily opinionated or reacting poorly to something. I am not ashamed of this, I am proud; I don't want people who are unable to handle any form of inconvenience and work the conflicts out, they are stressed by life in a different way and they have different small groups to form. I just want to point out that our idea of safety, with brutal honesty and letting flaws and conflicts happen freely is certainly not a universal standard sdhdsh (Shallow people like hopepunks who just clutch at "good vibes" and "being neutral" when their friends are bullied, on the other hand, I just can't stand)

I don't even know what I am trying to say anymore, sorry. It is just kind of hard to uphold this group when no boundaries set and the only filter is whether I can yap something "inconvenient" consistently. But if I don't, I will attract people who 'just like cute art and elaborate loredigging' and this is just not what I want of internet. I am not online to chill before I go back to ✨real✨ world and hang out with ✨real✨ people, I am here for legit human interactions and bonds. Internet used to be a place to rest from hardships of reality, but now things have changed, and it is the other way around: you are not allowed to avoid the internet spaces anymore for many reasons (for example if you live in the country that "protects" you from truthful news and from sane people COUGH COUGH). So, it is the real world where you rest from the internet now. Or, perhaps, we no longer have a place to rest, so why bother? x)

And I sure don't want to elaborately describe my preferences in fandom and add some sort of BYF/DNFI field in a pinned post to help people to preemptively "curate their experience". If I am to be rejected by a fellow fan, then only and only after they actually come in contact with something they don't like about me. Like, no! You won't get to decide against following me for fun lore posts when you read that I can be rude and explosive! You will decide against it when you actually see a post when I am rude and explosive!! I am against the mindset of frantically avoiding feeling anything that might make one uncomfortable, and I WILL make it everyone else's problem!!!

Okay this is all to say that we are probably insane for what our idea of "safe oasis" is and a type of people who dread the promises of Heaven where no negative thing can be ever experienced. I would not have had it any other way tho

recommend one of your favorite fanfics (spread the love!): Ok I have more than one favourites but what I'll do is share the one that devastated me and that would be Chasing Cars. I've read it at least twice and after reading it the first time I actually cried a few times and stared at the ceiling while simultaneously making a playlist because there was just so much that I really wanted to say but I didn't know how to. Maybe I should start saving my fave fics because I have sooo much more I could share here but I can't remember the names right right now :(

HI JAY!!!! I wanted to draw something for this but alas I’m cozy in bed but I still wanted to answer 😌

I am now realizing I’ve never really talked about how AWOL handled that whole thing huh. I want to say it was a bit of a combo of both of those reactions tbh! AWOL doesn’t remember much of what happened due to how strong her anger was. She saw her safe haven wrecked, saw the storch, connected the dots in her head, grabbed a nearby piece of tunnel debris, and after a scuffle and some violent head bashes the storch was very much more than dead. AWOL despite her degradation still retains the ara trait of a pretty consistent expressionless face, so if you’d been watching the fight it would’ve been kinda scary seeing her expressionless apart from a serious focus on her eyes. I think after getting over the initial shock of what she did she realized the gravity of what she’d done and definitely had a panicked cry about the whole situation. Her immediate reaction after was basically an internal monologue of “ohfuck ohfuckk fuck ohhhhnooo” while she dragged the storch further into the abandoned tunnels never to be found again. She definitely doesn’t regret what she did/doesn’t feel bad for the storch since to her that was someone trying to kill a part of her soul in her mind. So yeah after dealing with the body and all that she very much leans more towards that attitude of “fucker got what she deserved.” In just a very matter of fact way.

Also a fun fact inspired by @plasterhound (hi Rene hope the tag is ok) but I got an Awol stickersheet comm and Rene drew this absolutely gorgeous lil mural

^ this is what inspired me to decide Awol killed a storch and I think she would paint this after the murder I’m making it canon. I think this explains how she feels abt the whole thing better than anything I just said tbh

I feel Simon doesn’t have toxic masculinity, but he has toxic vibes in his extreme black and white thinking.🧐

Well on one hand I agree that his problem is more black and white, 'us vs them' mentality rather than any issues specifically w seeing womanliness/femininity being weak or anything. But I do think he does have aspects associated with toxic masculinity, though it's more a angry internet nerd guy way than in some alpha male dudebro way.

For one, we can see from his writings and models that he's very interested in war and soldiers and 'Rise of the True King' can be seen using the 'guy getting power and he respect that naturally belongs to him' (listen, we can't all do it like Tolkien). Apart from these showing Simon's need for a world he can understand and be in control of, they could also be seen as typical male power fantasies.

He also prefers to present himself as being logical, and people against him as being unreasonable or weak when he's just as driven by his emotion, which is a pretty typical trait of this type of guy.

I really don't think the subtext of his arc being an angry cishet white guy who refuses to change his damaging and bigoted beliefs, mainly conflicts with women, and ends up attacking his semi-official romantic partner, a black girl, over it was unintentional. His relationships with Grace and Samantha are fascinating to explore because they are complicated, but while I understand they had a lot to fit in 10 11 min episodes I would love to have met his mother. That is a missing puzzle piece i would love to fit in to place, but we just have to theorize (And I have).

mid-year book tag

1. Best Book You’ve Read So Far in 2024? i have read so many good ones this year but no particular one stands out to me as The Best so i'll name top 5 instead (in the order i read them in): a thousand stitches, doctrine of labyrinths, in other lands, big swiss, my brilliant friend - so, quite a range of genres and tones, as usual :)

2. Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2024? the virtu is definitely my favorite part of doctrine of labyrinths and the tropic of serpents, the second book in the memoirs of lady trent, was just a perfect historical fantasy adventure novel - it's like if jane austen wrote indiana jones except it's also a nature documentary about dragons. last but not least, empire of the damned which came out in march solidified jay kristoff's empire of the vampire as my favorite vampire book series. you might have heard me screaming about it from the rooftops. all three of these sequels, i find, are even better than the previous book in their respective series.

3. New Release You Haven’t Read Yet, But Want To? i'm saving kj charles' death in the spires for the fall since it's a spooky campus murder mystery (i think?) and i also want to read apostles of mercy and so finish lindsay ellis' sci fi series (which i have lost interest in somewhat tbh but i'm nothing if not a completionist lol). i was curious about the familiar but the reviews i've seen don't look too promising so i'm probably not going to prioritize it.

4. Most Anticipated Release For Second Half of 2024? i'm looking forward to kj charles' new romance book, the duke at hazard, as well as the new evander mills mystery, rough pages, but the piece of fiction i'm anticipating the most is actually the radioapple southern gothic au by my favorite fanfic author reminiscentbells. she's going to write the whole thing this summer and start posting in september - i'm so excitedddd😱

5. Biggest Disappointment? emily wilde's encyclopaedia of faeries is the book equivalent of a ghoul wearing the skin of your beloved. i wasn't a fan of a deadly education either😒 was very excited to read gaywyck but the expectations of "jane eyre but gay" which the cover of that book gave me were unfortunately not met🤷‍♀️

6. Biggest Surprise? i didn't think i might be into extreme horror and neither did i fancy myself a sally rooney girlie so i was quite surprised that i liked her conversations with friends as well as the sluts by dennis cooper. will definitely read more from both authors next year. an even bigger surprise however was solitaire which i picked up on a whim after tori came out as ace in the last heartstopper volume. i have a complicated relationship with alice oseman's books mostly due to the fact that i'm years past the target demographic age but still feel compelled to read them bc it seems they're the only mainstream books with prominent aro/ace rep out there. so i didn't expect much and was astonished to discover that tori spring is like looking at a mirror reflection of my 18yo self - uncanny in a fun way. ig i shouldn't be so surprised this turned out to be my favorite oseman book since it's the one with the most mixed reviews lol people like to hate a depressed teenage girl😬

7. Favorite New Author? i have devoured doctrine of labyrinths and the cemeteries of amalo in february so now i can safely say sarah monette aka katherine addison is one of my favorite authors. each of her series has a different tone but there are consistent themes of real or magical disability and non amatonormative relationships which are explored in creative ways throughout her stories. i also like her worldbuilding quite a bit, especially the naming systems and fantasy terminology. i read more books by celeste ng as well as by vale aida - both are likely to become favorite authors too. in the latter's case - provided she writes a sequel to hostis. if not, i shall never forgive her😅

8. Newest Favorite Character? okay this is just impossible to narrow down! first of all, liathe from empire of the damned bc i want her Gender: wearing a porcelain mask and a splendid crimson coat, formally bowing to her adversaries before she beats the shit out of them with her blood sword, referring to herself by the royal we and hissing every time she speaks - character of all time material right there. behold my beautiful girl who has done nothing wrong!🥰

secondly, elliot schafer bc he's the most obnoxious prickly boy in other lands and yet everyone wants him carnally lol. i adore his internal monologue - probably the best i've read in ya. his dialogue too tbh - his cutting repartee game is off the charts. honestly, he's just my favorite type of character: a mean bisexual gremlin who scolds people so creatively that they fall in love with him on the spot. what more can you ask.

finally, i have to mention that to my great surprise i liked mildmay more than felix harrowgate🤯 idk felix is this cunty traumatized savant which is a character archetype i'm used to liking so it was a safe bet. the opposites attract sidekick or love interest of such a character is usually not my cup of tea but mildmay is the exception that proves the rule ig. mostly it's bc of his unusual manner of speaking with those funny slang turns of phrase and just generally the contrast between his expressive internal monologue and his reserved demeanor. as a result, he easily rivals felix as the most interesting guy in the book. such excellent character work! taking my hat off to monette🎩

Newest Fictional Crush? i reserve this question for that special kind of obsession only a very particular character can inspire and this year it's alastor from hazbin hotel. which, i know, is not a book but i have read so much alastor fanfic in the last few months that he's basically like a book character to me at this point lol

💕Best Ship💕 elliot schafer and luke sunborn are very cute. i don't usually go for cute but here we are. especially after reading that short story from luke's pov i realized i just need more of these two together😌 felix and mildmay with their unholy magic bdsm union - need i say more? forbidden ship that watered my crops. last but not least, i'm currently trudging through the realm of the elderings bc of fitz and the fool and as of assassin's quest it finally started paying off: i'm being queerbaited and asking for more🥲

10. Book That Made You Cry? a thousand stitches is such a wholesome cozy book and it made me cry multiple times the way that a nostalgic movie from childhood can make you cry sometimes. especially the pug scene😭 the scenes of thara celehar walking the corn maze in the cemeteries of amalo made me cry a lot too. the symbolic depths addison is able to achieve with the labyrinth motif, the exploration of grief and forgiveness and letting go - unparalleled🤌

11. Book That Made You Happy? a thousand stitches made me happy! especially the pug scene!!😅 honestly it was like watching a disney movie back when they were good except also more relatable bc atwater's characters read neurodivergent and aspec-coded to me. love how she maintains that the kiss of true love that breaks the faerie curse doesn't have to be romantic. re-reading the three musketeers made me very happy too - it's one of my top 10 favorite books of all time and i was kinda nervous i might not like it as much as an adult. well the joke's on me bc now i can confirm it's one of the best books ever written😊 reading in other lands and big swiss cheered me up a lot too bc they're just so damn funney😄

12. Favorite Book Adaptation You Saw This Year? haven't seen a lot of adaptations so ig dune part two wins by default. twas a fine movie. the wheel of time is also a nice show in my opinion but i didn't read the source material so idk how good it is adaptation-wise🤷‍♀️

15. What Books Do You Need To Read By The End of The Year? in terms of series i want to finish the memoirs of lady trent, read one more witcher book, at least a couple vampire chronicles and then reread swordspoint and hopefully complete that series too. other fantasy i want to get to at last is fire & blood and the hands of the emperor - both are big and intimidating tho. for my classics challenge i need to finish a couple of tomes i'm reading slowly throughout the year and then also read the name of the rose. american psycho and mona awad's bunny have been on my tbr for ages - maybe i'll finally read them this fall. and i also want to finish reading kj charles' backlist bc the completionism drive is stronger than the fear of having no kj charles to read lol

i never do things a normal amount - every time i take up new media i go all in. so i had a musicals phase, a movies phase, a tv show phase - each lasting a few years and then i barely watched any of these once the phase ended. which is why i've been wondering if my current Book Phase is about to wrap up soon but, given how many books i managed to read since january, it sure doesn't seem that way. instead, it feels like the more i read the better i am at finding books that i'm likely to enjoy - which leads to more reading. and i cannot complain about that tbh😁📚

i wish more people where open about how ableist the shifting community can be tbh....

some if it's small, petty things like people shifting to DRS with disabilities they don't have here for the "aesthetic" (amputated/prosthetic limbs, partial blindness, scarring, etc) or purposely going to DR's where a canonically disabled character is no longer disabled. & like yeah, these things can be a little annoying but its not a big deal at all.

what IS an issue is refusing to accept that certain disabilities can make shifting difficult. what's also an issue is straight up denying the fact disability is real because shifting exists!!

like, trying to enter the void state is damn near impossible if you have chronic pain. trying to meditate when you have consistent jolts of pain bringing you out of your mind is hard! meditating with adhd is hard! & it shouldn't be hard, because im sure there are other methods, but no one seems to know about them or share them. instead, when scrolling through shifting tags looking for advice, i only see some variation of "there's no real reason you can't shift! stop making excuses, shifting is easy." i know its easy. at least, i know it would be easy if you could give some sort of tutorial or guide besides regurgitating the same 5 methods we've all already heard. im not even really angry that other people don't seem to have answers, that would be hypocritical. i don't have answers either! i've been looking, ive been getting there, but i still don't have an answer yet. i just wish more people admitted they don't have all the answers sometimes.

also... ive seen way too many people saying some form of "im grateful for shifting because i know i'll never become disabled!" or "if you have the right mindset, you can't ever get cancer!" or even "you can manifest your disability away!" I really, really, really hope i don't have to explain why all of these statements are false, not to mention how harmful & cruel they are.

Take this as someone who got cancer after praying to God nightly that i wouldn't. i wasn't immune, or an exception. as gently as i can possibly say this, neither are you. If you are in this reality, unexplainable & unfair illness, death, & tragedy can strike any time. I believed wholeheartedly (or one could say assumed) that my nightly prayers would keep me safe from illness, & I still developed cancer. I did not manifest it, nor did I manifest me recovering. It was probably just rotten luck. im not rambling about this to try & spark fear that you may get cancer too- you're gonna be fine. i just want to offer insight into other peoples lives & how very much not a choice disability is. Shifting is an amazing, infinite thing, but please do not be cruel. please don't forget compassion & humility.

4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Yes! One of the first places I landed when I finally got internet access was Livejournal, and I had a great many conversations in the comments there that led to long-lasting friendships. AO3 currently doesn't seem to have quite the same culture of keeping a conversation going, but every now and then, someone catches on (hi Quoth), and I'm always grateful. I also love getting responses when I'm the person who left a comment, so I like to assume that others feel the same way.

5. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Ooh, not to my knowledge. I think I've always been safely enough under the radar.

6. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yep, plenty of times with a variety of people. Mostly RP-style with alternating forum posts or instant messages, but once or twice via something like google docs, which I like because there's a comment functionality rather than [putting the part you're saying in brackets to tell your partner(s) it's not part of the body message]. I miss it pretty often, but I'm also nervous about trying again.

7. What's your all-time favourite ship? Ooh. Hmm. Frog and Toad. Those were formative works for me. Tell me that doesn't explain my insistence on Softe(tm) vibes. I'll also give a shout to Klapollo for getting me back into writing after roughly a decade, but tbh my multishipping heart sees other fun options for them too.

8. What are your writing strengths? Warm and cozy vibes, close character focus, wrapping things up nicely. I also like to think my heavy-handed metaphors and parallels are strengths since they're consistently part of my style, though I know they're an acquired taste.

9. What are your writing weaknesses? Physical description. Get that outta here. I don't know what she's wearing. I don't know how it looks in the room. I don't know what the room looks like or if they're even in a room! All written scenes take place in The Void until plot mandates otherwise. I’m pretty new to Tumblr and while I follow the main tags, I’m tired of the short and shallow Siriuses, activist Jameses, and naive Lupins that don’t seem anything like the marauders I fell in love with. And the hatred for Snape and the condescension towards his fans makes me super scared to interact with blogs since I have posted Snape content on my main blog and I feel like I’d be eaten alive. a lot of it honestly is just finding and following the right people. the exact balance of that is personal that it will take a while to feel like you're consistently seeing things on your own specific wavelength but it's definitely doable. i think once you find one blog you really align with, see who they interact with regularly, check out those blogs, then check out who those blogs follow, etc etc. i used to systematically go through likes and reblogs on posts i liked, but once you find a few blogs you really enjoy, you'll end up finding more like-minded people quite naturally. and honestly, anyone who expects you to have the exact same tolerances for different characters as they do is probably not going to be much fun to interact with anyway.

i use filters for things i absolutely never want to see but not everything gets tagged/not everything that is tagged is the thing you don't want to see (so much sirius solo art/gen marauder stuff is tagged wolfstar) but it works and i would recommend it for absolute no-gos.

the main tags unfortunately are not safe spaces anymore and tbh if there's anything worth seeing in there, someone else will reblog it so it ends up on your dash anyway. sometimes i look in the prongsfoot tag but if anything look at anti (ship)/anti (character) tags lol and sometimes finding people who dislike the same things as you is also a good way to find like-minded people - hating can work, kids.

specifically for mwpp stuff, in my broad experience, snape fans are often more comfortable with the morally grey thing so they have solid views on snape AND sirius, james and remus, tho obviously you get the ultra protective stans too. but def follow snape fans if you are even slighty interested in snape, it's a great way of seeing how other pockets of hp fandom function. also, you could have identical views on a character as someone but you love them and they hate them, for the same reasons, and i feel like the joy is in finding the same interpretation, it's very fun and just in life it's good to see different perspectives. i got unfollowed a while back for a snape post i can't even remember but it was like 5 people and honestly the right people will probably be cooler than you think about it :)

so really my advice boils down to:

know what you do and don't want to see

know what you can and can't tolerate seeing (things that annoy you or more serious triggers)

find connections through sources you trust

try finding a mix of people who like the same things as you do/people who dislike the same things you do/people who you might not always agree with in judgement but whose analyses and approaches are objective

and eventually you'll have a great balanced lil circle <3

Answering your in tag question last week: it is indeed hotter than ass out here. Any fun summer recipes? I’m discovering that my meager little cookbook really only has nice hearty recipes that while tasty make cooking even more of a chore than I find it to be when it’s so hot out here. Oh man I hope you’re staying cool, I recommend a great many ice creams above all. But secondary to that, I do have some food ideas that I’ve been making a lot of recently that I’ll stick below the read more here :-)

I love a big huge enormous salad in the summer (and all year round tbh) and I think the best salads are about 50/50 made up of base greens vs. fun stuff. My personal faves are to start with a romaine or romaine/iceberg base and then add:

italian seasoned chicken breast

cherry tomatoes

little mozzarella balls

cooked orzo

sun dried tomatoes

croutons or crispy onions (ideally both)

thinly sliced red onion

dressing (personal fav is a vinaigrette made of lemon juice, balsamic, olive oil, salt & pepper, oregano, and chili flakes)

OR

soy sauce/ginger/white pepper marinated chicken

red cabbage

thinly sliced carrots

cucumber

red bell pepper

sesame seeds

scallions

fresh coriander

wonton strips (which you can airfry out of wonton wrappers in like 3 seconds)

dressing (best is a combo of sesame oil, garlic, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, honey, and ginger)

Now if you’re not mad for salads, also nice in the summer is

A crumbled sausage + broccoli pasta (i like orecchiette); it doesn’t need to have a real sauce per sé, you can just season however you like and then throw a bit of pasta water, and parmesan in at the end and it’s lovely

Caprese with nice fresh mozzarella (best gotten from the cheese counter if possible). If you ever see san marzano tomatoes buy them immediately and make them into caprese

Veg-based sandwiches, I have a special love for a vegan one that’s got homemade cucumber sriracha hummus, tomatoes and baby spinach. It doesnt sound like much but if you get the hummus right it’s very cool + has a little kick and it’s lovely with nice bread!

Homemade greek gyros— I use this recipe every time and the marinade is actually life changing. Like sometimes I lie in bed and dream about this chicken and I am not even kidding

A pork + pineapple rice bowl, which basically consists of rice topped with; minced pork cooked with soy sauce and sesame oil, long strips of carrot and courgette cooked in a pan with salt + pepper til soft, pickled shallot or red onion (just left in a water/vinegar/sugar bath for 30min or so), and pieces of pineapple right out of the tin. There’s also a light soy/rice wine vinegar/honey sauce that can be thrown over the top— i think the friend i learned the recipe from got it from one of those meal delivery services so it’s likely online (or i can track it down from her for you if you’re interested!)

Hopefully some of those are of some interest to you!! I’ll live vicariously through you and your heat but I hope you stay comfortable and safe friend

I feel like “children should not have their privacy in the hands of Uber controlling parents that are basically stalking them and causing them harm” and “the internet is not safe for children and they should not have social media accounts until a certain age/parents should learn to allow their children agency while monitoring their safety online with a healthy communication model and/or monitoring their social media usage” are things that can and should coexist. But also abusive parents just shouldn’t have kids LMAO but you don’t need me to say that.

And there must also be a dialogue about how on the internet children who are not an appropriate age to be left unsupervised are consistently exposed to content (I was I was younger being a liveleak kid, and now there is/was Ankha Zone and Cupcakke memes on tiktok or the few instances of graphic gore and death footage being passed around) that they should not be seeing. I should not have been seeing 8 year olds talking graphically about sex the way I was on platforms like tiktok.

“But children deserve a place on the internet,” people may say — to which I agree, but you’re also talking about the same internet where shit like Ankha Zone was exposed to young children and I was exposed to actual IRL gore when I was 5-11.

“Children deserve a place on the internet” absolutely can, should and must co-exist with acknowledging how unsafe the internet is for them, because no matter how hard we advocate for filtering and tagging and stuff like that there will always be someone somewhere who will find their way around it.

We must also recognize that parental safety features, while they can and WILL be used by people that most certainly should NOT have kids, are also very important — what about parents who are not cruel overbearing assholes? What if they have an open communication model as I’ve mentioned before with mutual respect etc etc and they DO have a good relationship and therefore are capable of using these tools for the advantages of both parent and child? What if for a moment these tools could prevent someone from turning out like a liveleak kid or what have you if they were handled in the right hands by a parent who isn’t a helicoptery abusive shitstain?

Idk it’s hard to articulate but it is a very wide and nuanced argument and I feel like a lot of people miss out on the capability of using these types of things for good because they get so caught up in how it will be used for evil by people who should, again, not have kids. It’s also so hard to try and bring up how these tools can be useful and healthy for the child (again if the parent and child have a good relationship built on open communication trust and respect and the parent isn’t you know hovering constantly) without someone wanting to tunnel vision on something and call me an abuser for just… advocating for the safety of children online and how certain tools can be used for such when the internet is full of people (see: trolls) who will do anything to get around filtering?

I get what you're getting at, but tbh it's also like... there's a huge difference between a 10 year old and a 13 year old using the internet. at the point where a child is going to be talking to people online, especially people they met through the internet, they should already be old enough to have this as a space away from their parents strict watch

sure, you can ask your kid before monitoring what they do online, but are they allowed to say no? and if they are, do they know they're allowed to? has there been a previous pattern of not letting them say no and set boundaries that could make them think that saying no will, at best, do nothing?

will monitoring them in this way even protect them? how are you supposed to know that someone is a predator just from their icon and username? does being able to pry just at that information make your child free like you don't trust them, so they must hide anything that could cause even less trust or more shame? not to mention teaching them that this kind of spying is okay as long as the person doing it has power over them

and even if you could answer all of those confidently that there's no inherent harm, there's still going to be bad people abusing it. it doesn't matter that some parents might use it responsibly, we know that many parents are going to use it to control and traumatize their kids. and abusive partners could use it to track their significant other as well, this is also basically a given

when I weigh any potential good against any certain bad, it just isn't worth it in my eyes

boy, do i LOVE MUSIC! i listen to more than a 1,000 separate artists, and when I say that I listen to everything I MEAN IT! PLAY ME YOUR NICHE CIRCUS AMBIENCE MUSIC AND I WILL PROBABLY EAT THAT SHIT UP!

but to be more specific, my favorite genre is probably rock and everything that falls under it's umbrella, i love me some electric guitar dude it's like a drug.
