11. Adegast
Tumblr media
ID: A digital drawing of Adegast from The Owl House. His name is in the top left corner in all caps, with the show's title underneath in a different smaller font. The text is yellow. Adegast's color palette is along the bottom right half of the drawing, while the color palette for his wizard puppet is along the top right half. /End ID.

Can you tell I don't like drawing tentacles? 😅
Anyway, while the episode he's in isn't really one of my favorites, I definitely like his concept!

"Hey there, detective. Are you solving a crime or about to commit one?"
I like Gus's interviewee ratings here. Though I do feel the Bat Queen could be considered noteworthy at least and Principal Bump might be at least one of these things. Tiny Nose is certainly interesting, accomplished, and noteworthy though. He doesn't seem to know Adegast got eaten by Eda.

People call out Belos for not accounting for the witch and biped children who aren’t branded, but no one talks about the bug and beast demons. None of them would have brands
While not all are capable of advanced thought and are seemingly just animals, plenty are sapient! Take Adegast or Hooty, or the countless non-biped demons we see each episode interacting with their society in the backgrounds. There would still be a large population to raise the now parentless children alongside the remaining wild witches. Not to mention the witches and demons who don’t live on the isles in the first place.
Belos truly didn’t care about actually ‘eliminating evil.’ He just wanted bragging rights. What a guy

So this hypothetical episode from the TOH pitch bible basically confirms this character as Proto-Vee;
Tumblr media
She’s also got a bit of Adegast mixed in with the puppet motif and offer of an easy, conventional way to be a witch too! And the communication with mirrors to explain to loved ones about being replaced by a doppelgänger made its way into Yesterday’s Lie… Creepy Luz was one of the earliest ideas.
Also I gotta say, the parallels between Lake from Infinity Train and Vee are even stronger now! I remember speculating Creepy Luz as being sympathetic like Lake, and I was so vindicated when it turned out to be the case! Turns out they would’ve been even more similar at one point, though I wonder if Proto-Vee was always going to be misunderstood, or just an enemy like Adegast.

An unnecessary and in-depth analysis of magic colors used in TOH (Part 2):
Part 1 here
Purple:
Darius
Purple is associated with luxury, ambition, independence, mystery, arrogance, and inferiority
Darius is pretty much the embodiment of the color purple based on symbolism. He’s independent, he’s mysterious, he’s arrogant, he likes to live in luxury. He doesn’t act super ambitious but he is a Coven Head so we can assume he is somewhat. And the fact that he’s so competitive with Alador suggests that he may experience feelings of inferiority.
Tumblr media
Magenta:
Amity, Alador, Tibbles, Gavin (possibly Kikimora and Malphas)
Magenta is associated with kindness, character, change, harmony, cooperation, and self respect but also impatience, arrogance and volatility.
Note: Kikimora and Malphas are listed as having purple magic on the wiki page, but it looks more magenta to me and I think that magenta makes more sense for them as well.
Impatience, arrogance and volatility are traits that are shared among these characters for the most part, though with Amity they’re mostly presented early in the show. The positive traits, consequently, have a lot of significance for Amity, who has gone through tremendous development and change over the course of the show. She’s become kinder and has learned to respect herself in a way that her parents couldn’t. She’s invited harmony into her life. If the show wasn’t cut short, I think we would have had a similar (smaller-scale) development for Alador and maybe even the other antagonists; at the very least Alador has taken initiative to change and better himself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
White:
Emperors Coven Scouts, Adegast, Detention Monitor, Oracle Teacher
White is associated with purity, innocence, perfection, safety, simplicity, illumination, emptiness, and unfriendliness
This one is interesting. For the Emperor’s Coven, since they are working for Belos, I can see their magic being sort of “sanitized”, void of their own creativity or free will. Similarly, for the teachers, maybe their magic is somewhat restricted when they’re on school grounds. They have to stick to the rules and regulations. For Adegast, maybe the white represents how his true nature/form was “illuminated” in WBW. Note: Jerbo is also listed using white on the wiki page but it actually looks like more of a white green to me, which makes more sense for him.
Tumblr media
Yellow:
Eda, Mattholomule, Luz, Raine, Hunter (flapjack)
Yellow is associated with sunlight, positivity, intellect, creativity, and confidence. Some shades of yellow are also linked to magic and diversity. On the other hand, yellow can be a symbol of deceit, depression, or cowardice.
This one is fascinating to me. Yellow being associated with Luz makes perfect sense, her name literally means light and there’s so much symbolism in the show associating her with light. It also fits well for Eda, who is sort of the personification of magic and diversity, as well as sharing other traits with Luz. Eda and Raine are the only couple to share the same magic color and I think that was very much intentional, they are each other’s light. Hunter switching from red magic to yellow with flapjack must have significance as well. He goes from having every aspect of his life controlled by Belos, to finding a sense of autonomy and confidence in himself. Deceit, depression and cowardice are also all themes that recur for these characters throughout the show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now for the odd one out: Mattholomule. This is one of the things that got me interested in the colors in the first place. Matt having the same magic color as Luz, Eda and Hunter? Maybe he will have plot relevance in the next episode? Okay, most likely not. But a girl can dream. He’s definitely shown cowardice and deceit before. And he has a loud (overly-confident) personality. Maybe we will get some other hints of how the color fits him in WAD. Also curiously, Matt is one of the characters shown to use a different magic color at some point (more on that below)
Cyan:
Gus, Lilith, Edric, Emira, Adrian Graye, Titan Trappers, Keeper, Reviewnicorn
Cyan is associated with compassion, clarity, calmness, concentration, and communication. It can also signify narcissism, stress, secrecy, boastfulness. It’s also the opposite of red.
Many of the characters using this color are illusionists. At face value, concentration, clarity and communication are all important traits for illusionists to have. But I think for the twins, the color might also represent their connection and ability to see and understand each other. Likewise, Lilith’s color may be a symbol of her bond with Eda; her character development and how she grew to accept and understand her sister.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Adrian is a talented illusionist but his narcissism blinds him when it comes to really seeing and understanding others. The Reviewnicorn I could also see being somewhat boastful or narcissistic. And the Keeper, in addition to being compassionate and a skilled illusionist is definitely keeping some secrets. What about the Titan Trappers though? Is the blue a symbol of their secrecy? What do you guys think?
Finally, Gus. He really is the embodiment of this color as much as Darius is purple. He’s compassionate and understanding. He’s intuitive and able to see a lot of things that others might miss, even without magic. He’s able to get through to people and to see the good in them when others can’t. At the same time he can also be somewhat boastful and narcissistic himself at times. And we see how much he struggles with pressure and secrecy in particular.
Back to Matt for a minute, he’s seen in this image from the FTF credits using what looks to be cyan magic. Maybe it’s an accident or supposed to represent the use of illusion magic, but I like to think that perhaps it represents a connection to Gus. If you guys know of any other examples of characters switching colors, let me know!

Rewatching Witches Before Wizards is such a surreal experience tbh.
Adegasts whole "The prophecy speaks of a young human girl who will claim the celestial staff and free this world from an ancient evil" turned out to be true... in an episode that explicitly states Luz ISN'T a chosen one and she's not going to get what she wants out of TBI.
So that's - hm. that's weird
... It's weird how Luz actually does receive her staff and frees the world from an ancient evil because she won the favor of a god who can see into the future and the past... the glyphs are also given to her by this god.
And then this show has the audacity to like, completely barrel head first into becoming a wishfullment story by making the villain absent in season 1. Luz gets to live her little Azura fantasy, despite the show saying she isn't going to get her little Azura fantasy.
The other surreal part of this episode is Adegast and Nevareth being used as foreshadowing for Belos and Hunter. And it's like, really interesting to me, because Belos also uses Hunter - a prince - as an extension of his power like Adegast does with Nevareth. And just like Adegast, Belos is an illusionist - except he doesn't need to cast illusions to manipulate you. He simply creates narratives to further his goals.
See, I could forgive season 1 being for like that IF it turned out this entire season was Belos' teehee haha psyop prank on Luz. But it's not... TOH is just a wishfullfillment story that tried to trick you into thinking it's not.
This just makes the Kiss in SAI even more suspicious in retrospect...

what creature were you referring to for toh? /gen
Hooty, obviously
Serious answers:
- Watching and Dreaming!Belos, what with his infectious goop and the way it seems to reach out before grasping the ground as it spreads.
- Adegast.

First time watching ToH S1E19 (Young Blood, Old Souls). Thoughts below:
Detailed thoughts:
A fantastic finale to wrap up the first season of ToH! The team have already set a high benchmark for themselves, I wonder how they’ll surpass it in the next 2(-ish, I heard season 3 is made up of 3 specials).
These two episodes have been great for demonstrating Eda and Luz’s relationship. Although they’re only known each other for so long, Eda and Luz truly love and care for each other, willing to sacrifice their own health and well-being to protect each other. Luz puts it best herself, “But we’re a family! Us weirdos have to stick together, remember?” That heartbreaking callback to the first episode from Luz really gets at the core of what makes their relationship work.
Luz’s only friends or family that we know of is her mother. Before coming to the Boiling Isles, Luz had no one else, and now that she seems to be stuck there indefinitely (w/ no reception, wifi, or way to charge her phone), she doesn’t even have that. At this point, Eda and everyone else really are the only family that Luz has left.
The same is true for Eda before Luz arrived. Back then, Eda only had King, Hooty, and Owlbert. Her parents are out of the picture, and her only sister pledged herself to a group dedicated to hunting her down and capturing her. Eda made her living scrounging junk that she got from the human world and beached trash slugs, struggling w/ a lifelong curse.
Over the course of the series, Luz’s overwhelming optimism has soothed Eda’s innate pessimism and allowing her to see the joy in things that she’s long dismissed like Moonlight Conjurings, coventions, and attending magic schools by looking at them through the eyes of someone who never had these opportunities to begin with.
Meanwhile, Eda’s pessimism has tempered Luz’s optimism, teaching her to be ready and weary of worldly dangers like Adegast, as well as teaching her patience and resourcefulness (key skills for Luz’s understanding and mastery of glyphs). In a way, Luz and Eda are both students and mentors to each other, especially now that Eda can no longer do magic herself either.
After showing us Lilith at her worst, this episode counters that by revealing the rest of Lilith’s backstory with the thoughts and feelings that drove her actions. Lilith cursed her sister out of jealousy, and due to her refusal to be proven wrong by her sister, she never admitted the truth to her, no matter how much she regretted it, assuring herself that she could solve everything herself by just capturing Eda and having her join the EC w/ her.
I will admit, even though I know the episode wants me to sympathize here w/ Lilith, even if just a little, I still find it hard to forgive her. I can’t believe the fact that Lilith cursed her own sister to become part of the EC, even if she did think it was temporary. Lilith couldn’t just accept Eda beating her and be proud of her sister’s accomplishments? She couldn’t have just waited to apply to the EC later when another spot opened up?
Although similar in setup and premise, I don’t have any issues w/ Amity when she revealed why she stopped being friends w/ Willow for one main reason: Amity was forced to stop seeing Willow. If she didn’t, her parents would have done everything in their power to destroy Willow’s future as a witch. Amity sacrificed her friendship for the sake of Willow. Lilith voluntarily sacrificed her sister’s future for the sake of her own.
While Lilith’s decision to share Eda’s curse at the end of the episode has helped rehabilitate her character, it doesn’t change the years of suffering that Eda went through because of her. Though, ultimately, whether Lilith deserves forgiveness is up to Eda. If she is able to forgive her sister for what she’s done to her, then it’s best to accept her decision.
Edit: With that said, and after some discussion, Amity isn’t without faults either. Although the initial reason why Amity let go of Willow as a friend is understandable, that doesn’t justify Amity’s patronizing behavior towards Willow or her passiveness in letting Boscha and her gang bully Willow for years afterwards, even if she did so to avoid “showing weakness.” Like w/ Lilith and Eda this episode, it was ultimately up to Willow whether to accept her apology or not.
Moving on to Emperor Belos, we’ve gotten a little bit more information about him this episode. As established, Belos instituted the Coven system to limit people’s ability to use magic to 9 basic types based on his claims that doing so goes against the Titan’s wishes. The truth of whether or not Belos himself believes that has yet to be seen. If he doesn’t, he didn’t drop the act in front of Luz.
It isn’t clear what Belos’ plan is, but I suspect it’s to unite the Boiling Isles/the Demon Realms w/ the Human Realm on the Day of Unity given his obsession w/ the portal and his assurance to Luz that he won’t simply invade it. The one question I have is Belos’ motivation for this, but as established above, unless we find out more about Belos and his powers, I can only guess as to the reasons why.
As with any good finale, this episode has completely changed the series’ status quo. Both Eda and Lilith are outlaws now and have to deal w/ a weakened curse. Similarly, Lilith’s magic is weakened while Eda can no longer do magic at all, like Luz. Whether Luz, Willow, and Gus will be allowed to continue studying at Hexside is unclear, as is Amity’s aspirations of joining the EC (considering her idol, Lilith, almost got petrified by them along w/ her crush’s mentor).
Plot threads that still need to be resolved: Amity’s crush on Luz, who is writing letters impersonating Luz to her mother, finding a cure for the curse (if there is one), the truth about Belos, the Day of Unity, and how to return Luz to the Human Realm (if she ever does).
General thoughts:
History book! We’re getting lore! Who’s the author?!
The giant skeletons are Titans! Also, the Boiling Isles are part of the Demon Realms, or at least connected to them.
So all magical species evolved on the Boiling Isles? Then where did the Titans get their magic? Is it because they’re demons?
Of course only the supreme leader and their cadre of most loyal enforcers have full control over magic. Why would it be any way else?
Wait, are wild witches turned into stone? I thought they were just bound to a coven. Is that what’s going to happen to Lilith when Eda escapes?
Oh, we’re not even getting the OP! We’re just going straight into the story!
Eda has quite the armory! I don’t rate keeping a loaded crossbow on the wall tho, that’s a lot of unnecessary tension on the bow limbs, not to mention how dangerous that is in general.
King sees Eda as his family ;v;
Belos’ eyes are blue now. Did he just drain the magic from someone else’s palisman? Oh, they change w/ what magic he uses?
I don’t see how Lilith honestly expects Eda to just roll over and submit to the Emperor, especially after admitting that she cursed her. If Lilith promised that to the Emperor, then I can only wonder what he’ll do when Eda’s inevitably rejects his offer.
The Wild Witch of Bonesborough is an amazing title.
Does Belos want to take over the human world?
Unsurprisingly, Belos refuses to cure Eda. I shouldn’t be surprised that a blindly loyal ideologue accepts every word that their leader tells them, but I am still disappointed in Lilith. Also, Lilith cursed her sister but can’t even undo it herself? Or is it just because she was in front of the Emperor and still processing his betrayal?
Perry Porter? Per Reporter?
First Petrification in 30 years? So that’s this world’s version of capital punishment.
The Conformatorium? We’re returning there again? Will we get to see-
Warden Wrath! Oh, he’s way less scary when Luz has magic. Either that, or Luz is way more scary when she has magic. I’m leaning towards both.
“Draw me a map!”
It seems like the Emperor’s grasp on power isn’t as tight as he thinks if the common people have doubts on whether Eda should be petrified in the first place.
Piniet, Bump, and Snaggleback crowd cameo!
So the regular guards can’t use magic?
Eda ;-;
“But we’re a family!” ;_;
NO, NOT THE PORTAL!
“I love you, Eda.”
“I love you too, kiddo.” ;_; o7
THEY’RE GOING TO THE HUMAN WORLD?!
GLYPH MAGIC DOESN’T WORK THERE?!
Lilith used to have curly hair. I wonder what causes all the hair color changes on the Boiling Isles (first the Cawthornes, then the Blights).
Are those the Blights in the background?
Eda turns into an owl demon and the EC just throws stones at her until she leaves? I’m doubting the EC’s competency more and more each episode.
Lilith’s magic still works? I guess that’s because the human world isn’t as innately magical as the Boiling Isles w/ the Titan, so glyphs fizzle out, but a witch’s magic is a innate part of their biology.
EC military band uniform!
Lilith wants Luz to rescue Eda on her own? I mean, sure, her glyph magic has gotten better (look how much she can do w/ those small sheets of paper), but just Luz on her own?
WHY DOES BELOS HAVE A FLESHY THRONE ROOM UNDER THE CONFORMATORIUM?
Augustus Porter! That’s his full name!
Eyeball eater! Potion seller! Principal Bump!
OH! That’s a disaster for the Emperor! His regime has to cover up the live footage of a chanting crowd demanding for Eda’s release, the most wanted witch on the Boiling Isles!
OH THAT PAN FROM THE CROWD TO BELOS AND LUZ UNDERGROUND!
SHE GOT HIM IN THE EYE!
What’s his scheme! He doesn’t want to invade the human world?
THE PORTAL! LUZ JUST DESTROYED HER ONLY WAY HOME!
WHAT! THE PAIN SHARING SPELL!
DOUBLE HETEROCHROMIA SISTERS!
AWW THE LIGHT SPELL! JUST LIKE THE OP! LUZ’S FIRST SPELL IS NOW EDA’S FIRST TOO!
IS THAT THE NEW SEASON ANTAGONIST?
THIS SERIES HAS ALSO HAS A SECRET BASEMENT PORTAL?!
OH THEY CHANGED THE ED TOO!

1.2 | Witches Before Wizards
Tumblr media
The Owl House (2020)
🪶🪶🪶🪶
I’ve seen these early episodes maybe twice before, but they feel so nostalgic. Omg, it’s our old friend the weird cat bridge troll! Hey buddy!
I think the writing is really finding its footing. There’s kind of two styles here! Sometimes it feels really hammy and punchy and it’s driving home one plot idea with a lot of energy, and other times it feels very natural and slice-of-life and the characters have a lot of room to breathe. I’m thinking of the big fight against Adegast, vs when Eda and King make fun of Luz. I especially like the latter tone. I think it’s one of the things that makes TOH feel so cozy and thoughtful. I’m really curious how that balance is going to evolve.
I like that this episode directly continues Luz’s desire for a perfect fantasy adventure, but I think that can still be punched up! In the beginning, her outing in Bonesborough is supposed to be very humbling and disappointing, making her feel like she’s just a nameless person in a dirty, scary city. But, like, I’m familiar with modern cartoons, so all that crass, creepy humor is exactly what I expect from a fantasy adventure! I think I might enjoy it even more if we had a clearer sense of what she expects and hopes for. Particularly where she expects fanciful, epic stuff, and is met instead with situations that feel modern and irreverent, cause I think that’s a really apt vein of humor there.
The quest of parody fantasy tropes is really funny overall, although I don’t know why so many of those fake little characters are so dang ugly. I wanted to see a cute fairy! Bring back the skin-eater! I love Luz unabashedly having the hots for her angstcrush. And the unglamored, ruined versions of the areas that Eda and King see are so cool and eerie.
You know what I didn’t remember about this episode?
EDA ATE THAT GUY.
SHE SOUL EATERED HIM UP.
Woman of my freaking dreams.
Next time: Little witch academia!

The more I think about The Owl House, the more I think that murder is just, like, not a big deal on the Isles? Like. There are so many cases where someone casually kills/attempts to kill someone else (ie Eda literally eating Adegast, Odalia trying to murder Luz, the head guard tossing Amity into a ditch, etc).
.... Kinda wanna do a rewatch now specifically to look for this, ngl
