For me, someone who has no knowledge of computer programming and the sort, it’s a very slow, tedious and boring watch. ‘Tron’, unfortunately, didn’t take my interest whatsoever. Not helped by the poor special effects (they get a pass due to it being an 1982 release; though I’m not convinced it’s good either way) and forgettable cast performances, it’s not a premise that’s easy to get into if you have no prior understanding of coding etc. There is some intrigue in there, but not nearly enough to satisfy my viewing pleasure – it felt like a much longer run time than 96 minutes, that’s for sure. All cool if you love this, but I very much didn’t. Hopefully the 2010 sequel gives the concept a major boost. CinemaSerf: I saw this again yesterday – it’s 40 years old! I didn’t see it at the time, I was one of those kids who hadn’t the slightest interest in “Space Invaders” nor did I ever have an Atari, but I do recall the fuss that was being made about Disney’s first foray into the wor...

Epstein allegedly sexually assaulted multiple teenage girls. Some of his victims were as young as 14 years old, prosecutors have said. He committed the crimes at his homes in Manhattan; Palm Beach, Florida; and his private island near St. Thomas.
In 2019, federal prosecutors charged him with one count of sex trafficking conspiracy and one count of sex trafficking with underage females. Epstein died by suicide in his Manhattan jail cell about a month after being arrested, and the charges against him were thus dropped.
His partner Maxwell, who was also involved in the crimes, is now serving a 20-year prison sentence after being convicted in December 2021. She was accused of helping Epstein recruit and sexually abuse minor girls.

SPOILER QUOTES:
NEW!
“Well, Simon is back from Vegas in ep 12/S1 Finale. He comes back to see Max and Zoey in a way that he’s a little bit surprised about, where they’re doing something that he thought was very much their own thing. So that takes Simon by surprise. And then Zoey starts to see Max in a new light in this episode, and by seeing Max in this new light, it ends up taking their relationship into a surprise direction. Zoey’s relationships with both Max and Simon actually get to a new point over the course of Episode 12.” - Austin Winsberg #cheesequake #whosawthatcoming
                          **********************************************
NEW!
S1 finale of ZEP features a 7-minute scene that was captured in a single shot (aka “a oner”). “We rehearsed it for two weeks leading up to the shooting of it. It required massive coordination amongst many different departments in order to get it right, and it’s probably the number — or certainly one of the numbers — that I’m most proud of all season.” -  teases showrunner Austin Winsberg.
                          **********************************************
NEW!
“I don’t know how Zoey would end up singing again...anymore” [In S2...after that one time in 1x08 during her glitch] - Jane [”Oh, right...” - Skylar] Skylar & Jane IG Live
hmmm... what does this mean? Why “can’t” she sing anymore after S1? Is it cause there’s no “dad’s declining health” reason? Is it cause she has no voice/ability to speak anymore? Is it cause...
                          **********************************************
NEW!
Question: What is the scoop on Zoey and Max from Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist? I’m dying to know if these two have chance of being together by the Season 1 finale. What is in store for them? –Ashley Answer: I delivered your Q to Austin Winsberg, creator of the NBC freshman, and he wrote back, “Zoey and Max’s relationship will continue to evolve and change in surprising ways for the rest of this season and beyond. By the end of Episode 12 (airing in early May), I believe Zoey and Max fans will feel like these two have been on a real journey together — and also that their journey is, in fact, just beginning.”
                          **********************************************
“On top of the health issues with her father, Zoey's also got two other men in her life who were already making her life complicated even before she finds herself uncontrollably singing her emotions. Some particular musical numbers in ep 1x08 result in some awkward conversations with engaged coworker Simon and BFF Max, continuing this rocky romantic journey Jane's been on all season, though Levy thinks they're both being a little unfair. "She will continue to go down both roads, and you know, they are different roads, and one I think is messier than the other," she says. "In my opinion, I'm kind of like, give Zoey a break. Why does she have to choose anything? She never promised anything to these people, she hasn't broken any promises. She's like dealing with extremely stressful and painful moments in her life and like these men need to give her a goddamn break." It doesn't sound like they will be giving her a break anytime soon, but Levy did tease a finale number between Zoey and Max that is "sweet, funny, sexy" and the audience is going to lose their minds over it.” - Jane
                           **********************************************
“Zoey is someone who is not in touch with her feelings or is constantly running away from her feelings or burying her true feelings so she can be good at her job or not make things fall apart with her awkward personality. So for me, with each of these songs, the “Zoe-ality” had to be a deep desire [but] then when you cut back to reality, you’re back to Zoey covering up her feelings, being the Type A coder girl who’s just trying to solve problems and doesn’t want to really admit what’s going on inside of her, whether it’s her crush on her best friend or wanting to have sex with a coworker or knowing her boss did something unethical.” - Jane
                           **********************************************
“You’ll get a lot more from both relationships (Z/M & Z/S..after 1x08). There will be a lot more intimacy between Zoey & Simon, and Zoey & Max. And there is a number in our finale that was one of my favorite things we did and it involves one of them. It is a love scene with two musical numbers and it’s funny and sexy and really cute all at the same time.” - Jane
                           **********************************************
“We never wanting to make it (Simon vs Max) feel like a competition or a choice. Because that doesn't only preserve our characters, but it really protects Zoey. Zoey is nobody's prize and she's nobody's to claim or win over. So we do love the idea that there's a Team Max and Team Simon thing. But we tend to, when in performance, really take care of each other. There are scenes that Simon and Max have down the line and they have some difficult conversations. There's an obvious way to play all those scenes; they can be sizing each other up, looking at each other up and down, a game-on type of mentality. John and I have never seen it that way.” - Skylar
                          **********************************************
“What I love about Max and Zoey is that even though she's pressured in that moment, she still does feel like she can tell Max. I think that that says a lot about their friendship and about their relationship. There's only very few people that know about this superpower that she has. It's very brave and daring of her to do that. The cards are out on the table now; she can't ever make any excuses for why she's acting a certain way towards him. It's really bold.” - Skylar
                          **********************************************
“There's two ways of seeing it [Z telling M about her powers]. There's, "Oh my God, thank you so much for telling me. Now everybody knows and everybody can live happily ever after." Or there's the feeling of, "Wow, there's been a betrayal. You're telling me you knew all this stuff?" As Zoey begins to let people in on her powers throughout the season, it's going to be interesting to see what people are really there for her and are understanding, and what people can't handle this new information.” - Skylar
                          **********************************************
“While Levy won't reveal how Zoey's heart songs change things for her moving forward, she does tease that this episode [1x08] is going to have far-reaching ramifications, but not in the way you might expect.  "It turns out to be positive," she says. "A lot of our show’s message is that we are all the same, the human condition is complex but we’re all going through it together. You don’t know what the person beside you is going through but you might actually relate to their pain or desires. Zoey admitting these things that are so horrific to her actually makes people understand her in this way that she doesn’t allow when she’s being her emotionally awkward, neurotic self. And Zoey going through this will make her even more empathetic and compassionate to other people’s experiences, especially when she hears their heart songs moving forward." - Jane
                         **********************************************
“One thing that we can tease is that we have two big Broadway Tony-winners coming in, in the next few episodes. Renée Elise Goldsberry from Hamilton plays Joan’s work rival, and Bernadette Peters comes in, in Episode 11, as an unexpected help to the family. The love triangle between Zoey, Max and Simon continues to evolve, in unexpected ways. And we have one number, at the end of Episode 12, that’s a six and a half or seven minute long one-take oner that is the thing I’m probably most proud of, all season.”- Austin
                         **********************************************
“There is one number in which I sing one verse and that’s it after this. [read: after ep 1x08, where Zoey sings all the songs]” - Jane
                        **********************************************
"You will see her go down both roads and there are some fun intimate numbers, musical numbers between Zoey and Simon. And there’s some between Zoey and Max as well. I really like how Austin has crafted this “love triangle.” Can’t give away much more than that.” - Jane
                         **********************************************
IN SHORT:

Omega!Tony & Alpha!Peter again
My girlfriend requested I write more of the omega!Tony fic that I posted a bit ago. So here’s some more, please enjoy! Maybe one day there will be more...
Features: ABO Dynamics, intersex Omegas, Omega!Tony, Alpha!Peter, cunnilingus, edge play, NFF (this is mostly smut)
———
Tony woke up with a warm body pressed against his own. He was too hot - sticky and damp with sweat. Carefully, Tony rolled out of Peter’s arms, the Alpha whining in protest. He stifled his own whimper and pain ran through his lower back. Next time, he wasn’t sleeping with Peter’s knot inside him. Tony waddled to the bathroom to quickly clean himself up. His stomach rumbled while he was washing his face, but he ignored that.
Tony rejoined Peter in the bed, laying down near the Alpha. Peter’s eyes blinked open, and he smiled softly at Tony. “You okay?” He asked.
Tony turned on his side and closed his eyes, though he was facing Peter. “Hungry,” he said.
Peter propped himself up on his elbows. He yawned, but got out of the bed. “I’ll bring you something,” Peter said. He dragged himself from the bed and disappeared from the room. Tony shifted to Peter’s side of the bed, chasing the warmth his Alpha left behind. Peter was back moments later, food piled in his arms. “I didn’t know what you wanted,” Peter said, “I just brought you snacks.”
Tony nodded. He sat up, leaning on the pillows and headboard. Peter handed him a fruit bar and a glass of water. Tony sleepily ate it, then some crackers and cheese. He tried to turn down the vegetables Peter had brought, but his Alpha pouted at him. Tony couldn’t find a good excuse to keep saying no. So he ate them, drenched in ranch dip but he did it.
Peter also forced him to drink two full glasses of water. But he rewarded Tony with cuddling and gripping the sides of his hips. Having Peter’s fingers pressed into the cut of his hipbones, just under his soft belly, felt amazing. It quelled the urge to be knotted again while they rested. Something else Peter probably learned in his sex ed. class. He rumbled against Tony’s back too, lulling the Omega into a hazy half-sleep again. Tony felt Peter shift against him, pulling their bodies flush together. He whined at being jostled around. But then he felt Peter’s cock against his ass. Tony pressed back against it instinctively, though he was still sore from their previous mating. Peter’s hands moved from his hips to his hole.
“Can’t...” Tony moaned.
Peter’s fingers lazily stroked at Tony’s slick sex. “Was it too much?” Peter asked.
Tony nodded, but arched into Peter’s touch anyway. Peter took his hand away, then moved on the bed again. Tony whined again, protesting as Peter maneuvered him. He kissed Tony’s neck, gently sucking a hickey above the Omega’s bonding gland.
Peter splayed Tony out, laying him on his back against the mattress and spreading his legs. He settled in between Tony’s legs. “This will make you feel better,” he said.
Tony had some idea of what his Alpha is about to do. This kind of thing is so taboo - an Alpha going down on an Omega. Maybe...maybe it was more popular nowadays, but back when Tony was younger, no Alpha would ever do this for their partner. He slung an arm over his eyes to avoid whatever heated gaze Peter had in his dark eyes.
He tried to close his legs when he felt Peter’s tongue slide up his thigh. But his Alpha held his legs apart with his strength. He ran his tongue up the length of Tony’s cock, humming as Tony bucked his hips. Peter slipped his fingers into Tony’s slick pussy and sucked Tony’s smaller cock into his throat. Tony cried out, moaning loud and shaking. “Peter!” He yelped. “Oh! God!”
Peter kept sucking, bobbing his head up and down. Tony writhed on the bed. He reached for Peter’s head, tangling his fingers in the younger man’s hair. Tony tugged at Peter’s hair, but it was no use, he was going to cum too soon. Tony couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt such a heat on his cock. The fingers inside of him moved and stretched him open, filling him but not too much. It was exactly what he needed though.
“Peter, Alpha! I can’t!” Tony whimpered, “I’m cumming!”
Peter ceased moving his head, but kept his mouth on Tony as the Omega came, spurting down his throat, slick dripping from his hole. Peter swallowed, then licked Tony clean. Tony panted, body shivering as Peter finally raised his head. Tony glanced down at his Alpha, hand still gripping Peter’s head. He was hot, sweating and probably flushed. Peter’s eyes were half-lidded as he returned Tony’s stare.
He dipped his head back down, and lapped at Tony’s pussy. Tony keened, thighs snapping together over Peter’s head. Peter only grunted and kept licking up Tony’s slick. “Alpha!” the Omega mewled. His body was still buzzing, and Peter’s tongue flicking over his walls felt amazing. It soothed the ache of needing a knot again. Without direct stimulation to his clit, he wasn’t as over-sensitive as he thought he would be after such an orgasm. The sensation was pleasant, even though it was teasing. “Alpha... c’mon!” Tony moaned, tugging at Peter’s hair again. Peter simply laced his fingers with Tony’s free hand and continued to lap away. Tony shook his hips, but focused on his own breathing instead of really struggling to get away. Finally, Peter lifted his head and rested his cheek on Tony’s thigh.
“You taste amazing,” Peter sighed.
Tony closed his eyes and felt himself blush. “Peter... you cant say that,” he muttered.
“I did though,” his Alpha replied, small smirk on his face. Wait - his Alpha - no, no... Tony can’t think like that. Peter’s just an Alpha, just helping an Omega out - Tony can’t get attached to him, he’ll never let go. Tony covered his face with his palms and breathed deep. He had to calm down and not loose himself again.
Peter moved back to lay down beside Tony, pulling the Omega into his arms. Tony rolled his eyes as Peter sniffled and nuzzled at his throat. Alphas were so clingy... it was kind of sweet with Peter though. He felt the press of Peter’s cock against his leg. Tony reached between them to stroke it slowly, having a little mercy for the Alpha. Peter muffled his groan against Tony’s shoulder. “You don’t have to do that...” he murmured, “I can wait until you’re ready again.”
“I want to,” Tony insisted. He twisted his body to the side a little, getting a better grip and view. He worked his fingers over the shaft, watching the way it twitched at his touch. Tony released Peter momentarily, collecting his own slick for lube. He worked his fingers over the head Peter’s cock, teasing the slit with his thumb. Peter moaned, “Mr. Stark... that’s-ah- please don’t stop!”
Tony grinned. It was his turn to be smug now. Tony slowed his stroking, fingers dancing around the tip, tugging the foreskin up and down Peter’s dick. Peter purred, nuzzling his face into Tony’s neck. “Yes, yes...” he moaned. His hips bucked into Tony’s fist. “I’m gonna- oh god-“
Tony ripped his hand away, dragging a strangled cry from the Alpha. “No,” Tony said. “You only cum if it’s inside me.”
Peter panted, “Wha- but- then can we...” He moved his hips toward Tony’s sex again, but the Omega turned them away.
“I’m not ready yet,” Tony added, “You said you could wait.”
Peter whimpered, but focused on his breathing. His cock throbbed against Tony’s thigh, but the Omega waited. When Peter’s head dropped back against Tony’s shoulder, he finally took hold of the Alpha’s length again. Peter thrust into Tony’s hand again. He nipped at Tony’s throat, near the bonding gland but not a direct bite. Tony moaned and rewarded Peter by pumping his dick a little more vigorously. Peter rumbled, “Please, please, Mr. Stark...”
Tony just hummed. He made a twisting motion with his hand, stroking the entire length of Peter’s cock. He rolled his fingers over the Alpha’s knot and balls. Tony felt himself drip at thought of Peter’s knot. He could probably take it again, but teasing was too much fun. Tony began a pattern, jerking Peter off quick and fast but pulling away after a few minutes. He worked the Alpha up, until Peter was mouthing at his throat and collar. “Ah-oh- Mr. Stark, I can’t- oh!” He gasped.
Tony only nodded and released Peter’s cock again. He had one of Peter’s hands trapped under his hip, against the bed. The Alpha was gripping his waist, fingers digging into his skin with delicious pressure. Tony quickly grabbed Peter’s other hand, locking their fingers together so the Alpha couldn’t get himself off.
Peter groaned out in frustration, his head falling against Tony’s shoulder. He took in deep, shaking breaths, trying to calm down.
Tony stared as Peter’s cock jumped on its own. Beads of precum were leaking steadily from it. The Alpha’s knot had swollen a little more, deeper red than the rest of Peter’s length. Peter mumbled against Tony’s skin, “Please, Mr. Stark... please, let me cum.”
Tony sighed and shifted on the bed. He faced Peter and shoved the Alpha flat on his back. He straddled Peter’s waist, his hole just inches from the Alpha’s dick. “Be gentle,” Tony coyly purred.
Peter nodded, eagerly. Tony braced himself against Peter’s chest with his palms and slowly sank down on the Alpha’s cock. Peter cried out, eyes rolling upward. He bucked his hips in short, aborted bursts. Tony swayed on top of the Alpha, clenching and unclenching around his full length. “Knot me again,” he begged.
Peter held Tony’s hips and thrust into him, shoving it all in with one motion. Tony bounced and moaned. At this angle it felt like Peter’s was deeper inside of him than before. The stretch burned his insides, but his pain was clouded by hormones. “Alpha...” he gasped. He could feel Peter’s cock pulsing inside of him, the knot steadily getting bigger.
Peter rocked them, rolling his hips so he didn’t hurt Tony. His head was back against the pillows, eyes closed as he just concentrated on the tight, wet heat of Tony’s pussy. Tony leaned back a little, sinking an inch or two more onto Peter. He traced his hands down the Alpha’s arms. Peter opened his eyes, took hold of Tony’s hand, and kissed his knuckles. Tony whined - why was he so romantic? He bounced on Peter, not really coming off the knot, but creating more friction between them. He wanted Peter’s cum. He wanted to feel it fill him again, to drip out of his hole. Peter laced their fingers together, and took over when Tony stopped fucking himself.
“Cum inside me!” Tony begged.
Peter nodded, “Yeah,” he panted. He quickened the pace of his shallow thrusts, jostling Tony around, but the Omega loved it. Peter teased his back arching slightly. “Tony!” He moaned.
And Tony could feel Peter pouring into him; hot and thick ropes of cum filling his hole, trapped by the knot. Tony bit his lower lip, poorly stifling the mewl that left his throat as he came again too. The Alpha panted below him, one hand tightly gripping his own, the other soothingly rubbing his hip bone.
Tony draped his body over Peter’s and nipped at his throat. “God, yes...” he whined.
Peter curled his arm around Tony’s waist, gently massaging his lower back. “That was amazing,” he murmured, “You’re amazing, Mr. Stark.”
Tony flushed at the praise, thankful his face was hidden from Peter’s view. He found himself hoping his heat would last a little longer than normal, just to have Peter at his side. Peter was the best Alpha Tony has ever had... but there was no way he could keep the kid to himself. Peter was too young for him, too sweet and caring. He had to find an Omega his age, without so much trauma and baggage. Tony blinked back tears and buried his face deeper against Peter’s throat.
Peter carted his fingers through the Omega’s messy, dark hair. He kissed Tony’s temple and began stroking his back. It was easy to melt into Peter’s touch, to believe the Alpha would stay with him forever.
“Get some rest,” Peter whispered, “I’ll take care of everything else when my knot goes down.”
Tony shook his head. “Stay,” he muttered.
“Of course,” Peter said, “I’ll be here when you wake up. I’m not going anywhere.”
“Forever...” Tony mumbled, keeping his voice quiet, hoping that Peter wouldn’t hear. He yawned, feeling a little dizzy as fatigue hit him. Peter’s arms were warm and safe, holding him close. He could hear the Alpha’s heart, rhythmic thumping lulling him to sleep.
Peter yawned too. “Forever,” he agreed, voice low - or at least, that’s what Tony heard, before he drifted off.

Upcoming Movies in October 2020: Theaters, Streaming and VOD
https://ift.tt/3lducG3
October looks a lot different than it did only a few weeks ago. As the month many movie theater owners were hanging their hats on with the hope of a weekly deluge of new movies , October has recently been vacated by high profile features that include Wonder Woman 1984, Death on the Nile, and Candyman.
Yet if you’re  a cinephile or movie lover who is desperate for new stories and visions, it is not all doom and gloom. Between the streaming market of Netflix, VOD, and other platforms, as well as some smaller films willing to roll the dice on a limited theatrical release, there are still more than a few things to see in October 2020…
2067
October 2 (U.S. Only)
A high-concept science fiction setup if we’ve ever heard one, 2067 is the story of Ethan Whyte (Kodi Smit-McPhee), a young man born in a dystopian future where he learns that he might be the savior of humanity… at least that’s what people from an even more distant future are saying. In a plot twist that sounds, at least on paper, akin to a reversal of The Terminator, messengers from the future say Ethan is the key to saving the world and wish to transport him via time machine to an unknowable destiny. Chaos ensues. It’s a big idea, but we’re always game for someone swinging big in this genre.
Death of Me
October 2 (November 23 in the UK)
Darren Lynn Boseman, director of Saw II through Saw IV, returns to the horror genre again alongside Nikita’s Maggie Q and Westworld’s Luke Hemsworth. In this VOD release, the pair play a vacationing couple who wake up on an island with a horrible hangover. Yet a video on their phones seems to suggest the night before was even worse: Neil (Hemsworth) spent the evening brutally murdering his wife, as per the screen in their pockets. Nevertheless, here they are now, left with a lot of questions of what happened yesterday… and what can happen today.
Black Box
October 6
The first of Amazon Prime and Blumhouse Productions’ “Welcome to the Blumhouse” series, Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour’s Black Box has a tantalizing premise. Nolan (Mamoudou Athie) survived a car accident that took his wife, but it also took large swaths of his memory of her. So in order to regain his memory, and regain a sense of stability for his young daughter, Nolan undergoes an experimental treatment where his psychologist uses hypnosis to thrust him into his subconscious where he’ll be able remember his past and face his personal demons. Literally.
Like something out of Christopher Nolan’s Inception, this horror movie shows how scary being trapped in dreams really is if all that’s in them is the stuff of nightmares…
The Lie
October 6
The second Amazon/Blumhouse feature is more of a psychological thriller than a straightforward horror movie. Originally premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2018, The Lie follows a father (Peter Sarsgaard) who discovers his daughter Kayla (Joey King) accidentally killed her friend… until she admits she may have actually murdered her.
How far will he go to cover-up his daughter’s sins? Well, that’s the logline, and it seems to be a gripping one, albeit reviews from TIFF were less than kind two years ago.
Hubie Halloween
October 7
Last year Adam Sandler warned the Academy that if he doesn’t win an Oscar for Uncut Gems he’d make a film so bad that it’d make “you all pay.” Well, he wasn’t even nominated and eight months after the ceremony, here we are with Netflix’s Hubie Halloween. It remains to be seen whether this is actually the bad one—for starters it filmed before Oscar nominations went out—but it is still very much a Happy Madison production, complete with major supporting roles for Kevin James and Rob Schneider.

Horror Movies on HBO Max: Hammer Films, It Chapter 2, Us, to Arrive in October
By Don Kaye
In the movie, Sandler plays Hubie Dubois, the town loser of Salem, Massachusetts. A lonely fry cook obsessed with Halloween, Hubie spends all year looking forward to decking out his home and town the same way Clark Griswold anticipates Christmas. But on this particular Halloween, the town appears besieged by actual supernatural forces, and finally Hubie will have his time to shine. Eh, it looks more amusing than The Do-Over and The Ridiculous 6?
Books of Blood
October 7 (U.S. Only)
Who doesn’t love anthological horror? Hulu certainly does, as they’re releasing Books of Blood, the latest adaptation of Clive Barker’s multi-volume series of short stories by the same name. Previous tales from Books of Blood have been adapted into movies as beloved as Candyman and as decidedly not as Rawhide Rex. In this film version, three stories are created for the screen by co-writer and director Brannon Braga. Here’s hoping it lands closer to the former?
Saint Maud
October 9 (UK Only)
The UK will be the first to get A24’s only horror movie this year. Lucky. The feature directorial debut of Rose Glass, Saint Maud follows an unhealthily repressed and zealous young woman: Maud (Morfydd Clark). Maud is technically a caretaker by trade, looking after people in hospice. But she also imagines herself to be something of an apostle, sent to save godless folks from their sins, particularly Amanda (Jennifer Ehle), the woman she’s living with as the in-home nurse.

It’s already a tense situation, even before Maud starts hearing voices and having images of ecstasy and Heaven, and demons and Hell. Rich with atmosphere and grueling anticipation of something horrible happening, Saint Maud is a great debut for Glass and a potential star-maker for Clark, who is skin-crawlingly pious as Maud, the young woman who’s wound up tighter than a jack-in-the-box.
The Wolf of Snow Hollow
October 9 (U.S. Only)
Debuting in theaters and on VOD, The Wolf of Snow Hollow is Jim Cummings’ follow-up to Thunder Road. That earlier, underrated movie was a delightful mix of comedy and drama that won the SXSW Grand Jury Prize. So the sophomore effort being a werewolf comedy-horror movie is intriguing. Indeed, Wolf of Snow Hollow is the rare lycanthrope yarn that’s told from the point-of-view of the would-be wolf hunter, Sheriff John Marshall (Cummings).
Following a series of grisly murders every full moon, the residents of Snow Hollow become convinced they have a wolfman on their hands, even if the frustrated sheriff refuses to accept the obvious. The film also marks the final performance of Robert Forster as John’s crusty mentor.
The War with Grandpa
October 9 in the U.S. (October 16 in the UK)
For most people, having Robert De Niro as a grandfather can be an imposing experience. But kids these days! That’s at least one amusing takeaway from The War with Grandpa, the delayed family movie that sees De Niro’s grandfatherly Ed enter into a prank war with his grandson Peter (Oakes Fegley) after upsetting the youth by moving into his old bedroom—Peter’s mom and Ed’s daughter Sally (Uma Thurman) forced them into the arrangement.

Nocturne
October 13
The first of Amazon and Blumhouse’s next batch of original movies, Nocturne is the tale of a hellish rivalry between sisters. Genuinely. The feature debut from director Zu Quirke stars Sydney Sweeney as Juliet, the younger sister of fellow musician Vivian (Madison Iseman). While both young women are gifted pianists, Vivian is a prodigy and the center of Juliet’s envy. That is until Juliet finds the diary of another child prodigy at their prestigious conservatory who killed herself. The book includes all the late pianist’s hidden compositions… and symbols and incantations.
Ever heard the story of Faust? It seems like Juliet is about to get an up-close modern example.
Evil Eye
October 13
As the final Blumhouse effort to be released on Amazon Prime in 2020, Evil Eye hails from directors Elan and Rajeev Dassani and presents itself as both a psychological thriller and supernatural chiller. The truth of which it really is depends on how much you believe the eye of Usha (Sarita Choudhury).

The Trial of the Chicago 7
October 16
“The whole world is watching.” That’s the chanted refrain of protestors in Aaron Sorkin’s second movie as director, but it might also apply to the level of anticipation regarding this major Netflix release and potential awards season darling. The movie itself is an old-fashioned legal thriller like Sorkin cut his teeth on with scripts like A Few Good Men, but Chicago 7 feels urgently (and depressingly) vital.
Following on the heels of the Chicago riots during the Democratic National Convention of 1968—riots later deemed to have been started by the police—eight men categorized as “the far left” are rounded up for a show trial by Nixon’s Justice Department where they’re charged with conspiracy.

Quentin Tarantino Calls The Social Network the Best Movie of the 2010s

The film features the same blistering abundance of dialogue Sorkin has become famous for, as well as his penchant for breezy fast-paced editing. But the political heft of the subject matter and the movie’s deep bench of an acting ensemble that includes Sacha Baron Cohen, Jeremy Strong, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Eddie Redmayne, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Mark Rylance, and Frank Langella is what makes this one of the most thrilling movies of the year.
Honest Thief
October 16 (U.S. Only)
Liam Neeson plays a thief who wants a second chance. A bank robber willing to turn himself and $9 million in to be with the new love of his life. But then crooked FBI agents (Jai Courtney and Anthony Ramos) steal his money and frame him for murder instead. So he’s left with one thing to do: menacingly hiss over the phone, “I’m coming for you.” We imagine that trailer-ready threat was what Honest Thief was sold on during its elevator pitch.
Rebecca
October 21
Remaking Alfred Hitchcock remains a tricky proposition that has thwarted many filmmakers in the past. Readapting the only one of his movies to win the Oscar for Best Picture, Rebecca, appears all the harder. Yet everything we’ve seen from Ben Wheatley and Netflix’s luscious adaptation of the Daphne Du Maurier novel is highly encouraging.
With a winning cast that includes Lily James as the new Mrs. de Winter, Armie Hammer as her husband Maxim, and Kristin Scott Thomas as his menacing housekeeper Mrs. Danvers, the film opens with the young bride trying to step into the shoes of Maxim’s dead first wife, Rebecca. An apparent light of his mansion that has been long snuffed, Rebecca’s flame burns still if only because of Mrs. Danvers’ admiration for her late mistress… and maybe the ghost who prowls the house. This is archetypal Gothic horror, and with screenwriter Jane Goldman apparently keeping the novel’s original ending, we already feel seduced by the imagery.
On the Rocks
October 2 in the UK (October 23 in the U.S.)
Sofia Coppola and Bill Murray work together again. For the first time since their luminous Lost in Translation (if you ignore the ill-considered A Very Murray Christmas), the director and star are collaborating on this visibly intimate tale. It’s about an adult daughter (Rashida Jones) and her famous father (Murray) spending a weekend in New York City on an adventure after years of estrangement.

The film, which also stars Marlon Wayans, premiered to a largely warm reception at the New York Film Festival and is already being written about as a spiritual successor to their original collaboration. Once more a woman in the midst of an existential crisis is aided by Murray between glasses of scotch. Who doesn’t want to pull up a seat and order another round?
Over the Moon
October 23
You probably don’t know Glen Keane’s name but you should. The longtime Walt Disney Animation Studios animator oversaw the design and animation of Ariel in The Little Mermaid, Beast in Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin in Aladdin, and Rapunzel in Tangled. With Over the Moon, he steps away from the Mouse and toward Netflix as a first-time co-director, alongside John Kahrs (an animator on Tangled and Frozen).
The trailer for the film is like a Georges Méliès fever dream from  as a little girl named Fei Fei (Cathy Ang) builds a rocket ship to take her to the moon. But once there, Fei Fei and friends meet a mythical moon goddess (Hamilton’s Phillipa Soo) who takes them on a candy-colored odyssey through the cosmos.
Synchronic
October 23 (U.S. only)
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are two of the most intriguing new voices in science fiction. If you don’t recognize their names, go watch The Endless right now. One of the strangest and cleverest sci-fi yarns of the last decade, that film is now being followed up by Synchronic, another original tale that stars Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan. The specifics of the film remain vague other than it is about two New Orleans paramedics who investigate a series of murders caused by a new, bizarre designer drug. But we already know we can’t wait to watch what horrible side effects come from these poor bastards taking it.
The Craft: Legacy
It cannot be Halloween without at least one more horror movie coming out the week of. Thus enters The Craft: Legacy, Sony Pictures and Blumhouse Productions’ legacy sequel to the original 1996 The Craft. Like its predecessor, this follows an outsider who is the new girl in school (Cailee Spaeny). She may be ostracized by the popular kids, but she befriends fellow students who have alternative tastes… like witchcraft.
The original is a touchstone for millennials and Gen-Xers of a certain age, and this reboot looks to push the story into a more complex understanding of friendship. And if it doesn’t, it’s still a Blumhouse effort so it should have plenty of spooky jumps!
Relic
October 30 (US Only)
Dementia is at the heart of this very eerie chiller where three generations of women convene in an old family home which seems to be rotting from the inside. Robyn Nevin, Emily Mortimer and Bella Heathcote star in a slow build drama which delves into the horror of losing your sense of self, as Nevin’s matriarch goes missing for days and can’t remember what happened while her house is filled with odd notes, black mould and snippets of a life slipping away from her grasp. This is the feature debut of Australian-Japanese director Natalie Erika James and it’s a stylish, chilling and confident first feature with a final act that veers into full blown horror. Out already in the States on VOD it has a UK theatrical release in the UK.

Ruling with an iron ladle (MCU story)
On AO3
Happily ignoring Endgame, because I can. Domestic fluff,
####
"What the hell are they teaching you at school these days?"
Peter raised his eyes from his sandwich and shrugged.
"Maths, I suppose."
His mentor, his idol and his boss, all three in one, Tony Stark, took off his safety glasses, tapped the control of the cover over the welding station to make it run the exhaust and cooler and sat back, looking at him with narrowed eyes.
"And what about everyday life?"
Peter tried to make a link between the question and the conversation they had been having just minutes earlier, but there was nothing in the general concepts of Platonian philosophy that should have brought on the sudden explosion of discontent from Mr Stark. Unless Peter missed something, but the philosophy class was already a migraine-inducing point in his week and trying to work out what had annoyed the tech genius in front of him seemed like a pointless exercise.
"None, I think. At least, not that I know of. Well, sex ed. Maybe. The jury is still out on the importance of bananas."
That seemed to bring the conversation to a stop, as Mr Stark spent a few seconds rubbing his eyes, obviously lost in thought.
Before Peter managed to take another bite out of his lunch however, he found himself hauled out of his chair and dragged towards the penthouse.
"Friday, what do we have in the fridge? Give me a potential set for something high in proteins and fibre."
"There are all the ingredients for lasagne al forno, boss, and there are at least three types of lettuce Mrs Stark has ordered today in the morning. If you were willing to make some adjustments, lasagne di carnevale could also be made. Other than that, I can suggest chicken salad and minestrone, as there are several zucchinis available."
"You are using Friday as a cookbook?" Peter frowned, looking at the nearly pristine kitchen he had been dragged into.
"The boss uses my memory to store all the recipes used by his family," Friday informed Peter immediately. "I am much better at keeping track of the pantry contents than he is and I can immediately match the list of available produce to what specific recipes demand."
"W-wow," he looked down at the counter, now slowly being covered by a variety of ingredients. "But why...? I mean, I'm not really..." he grimaced. "A particular fan of lasagne."
Mr Stark twirled in place and stepped closer, holding a bag of something... green... ish.
"That is because, my boy, without being disrespectful towards the woman who had managed to bring you up and feed you all these years, your aunt May is an abysmal cook. And what you get in the school cafeteria should not even be rated as 'food', but rather as 'biological weaponry'. I should hire some of these cooks in our weapons department - if I still had it. Anyway. Put away that box, take off this shirt, wash your hands and put on the apron."
Peter looked at the growing amount of food in trepidation.
"But I thought we were going to be working in the lab today..."
"This is also a lab, kid. We're going more into the organic side of the problem today. And stop giving me these wounded doe eyes, you will get to play with the thrusters later, when this is all in the oven. Now, show me your hands. OK. Grate me some nutmeg. Two teaspoons at least."
"Ah..."
"This. Grater here, bowl here. Try to avoid grating your fingers into it, too. Bloody béchamel is no fun."
Peter sat down. Peter picked up the nutmeg. Peter grated the nutmeg.
It felt unreal. Just a little bit.
As in...
Mr Stark was cooking.
He had an apron. And a ladle. And all these other things.
And a jug of milk, too.
"Why do we need milk if you are making pasta?" he asked plaintively. "What is it for?"
"One, it's not me making pasta, it's us making pasta. Two, the milk is for the béchamel sauce. The nutmeg too. And the butter."
Peter opened his mouth, but really, no question that came to him sounded smart at that very moment.
"OK," he said slowly. "Béchamel sauce."
"And once you are done grating, there are carrots that need to be peeled and some celery and the parsleys. Wash, peel, set aside."
Peter sighed.
If someone asked what he was doing as part of his internship, he would simply say 'organic chemistry', because there was no way in hell anyone would believe him.
No. Way.
"Fine, now, chop the onions. Superfine."
He picked up a brown bulb and looked at it suspiciously.
"Peel it first, Peter. And wash it."
He cringed, just a bit, and started picking at the stubborn brown skin.
"Ah," he heard right at his side. "Not this way. Let me..."
A deft cut into the first layer and chopping off the roots turned out to simplify the task significantly.
"We'll have to do this slowly and I will show you."
He seemed to be failing even in the idiotically uncomplicated task of peeling the stupid onion. And now his hands were covered in onion... juice, probably, and he knew this thing would sting if he tried to touch his eyes, and obviously, tears were slowly gathering in his eyes, because it all seemed so idiotic, obviously, Peter was unable even to do such a simple everyday thing...!
"Hey, hey, hey. No crying before you cut the onions. Then you can cry. You are even supposed to, it's healthier. Washes the sulfur out of your eyes."
He took a shuddering breath.
And then there was a pat on his shoulder. A pat and a squeeze.
"Don't worry. You're doing better than I was at seventeen."
Peter blinked away the tears and looked up with surprise.
"How come?"
"I would have probably had a hissy fit if someone tried to make me prepare my own food. I only learnt recently, to be honest."
The onions were arranged in a bowl and two cutting boards were set in front of them.
"Now, a small, straight, sharp knife. Every chef and whatever will have their own suggestion how to chop onions, but this is mine. Cut off the top, cut off the bottom, and now start slicing like this, across these lines."
He picked up the small knife and tried following, but what seemed easy when done by Mr Stark was not as simple when done with his own hands.
"Don't cut yourself, if possible. OK, now, turn and keep these slices together, and now cut again. This way you are cutting with the lines, makes it a bit easier. See? Chopped onion. Very well. Now carrots. Just slice them thinly."
They worked quietly for a few minutes, Peter paying attention to the way his knife went through the carrots while Mr Stark dealt with the minced meat. Then he was given the celery root to grate, then the parsley root and, finally, several small, cucumber-y looking vegetables.
"Zucchini," Mr Stark informed him when he looked up in question. "I prefer small ones, they have less seeds."
"Oh. I though zucchini were like these huge, bulbous things. With stripes."
"That's the same thing. You can pick them when they are of any size, from six inches up. The smaller ones are not mature, so the seed part is not that well developed. The big ones are useful, too, but for different purposes. We can try this another time."
Peter turned back to his cutting board and started to mechanically slice what was in front of him, trying to reconcile the image of the technology-designing, media-baiting superhero with the man now, right behind him, melting a stick of butter in a saucepan.
"So..." he asked finally, getting to the end of the third zucchini, "what exactly is this going to be?"
"This? Meat, vegetables and passata will become a tomato ragu. Milk, butter, flour and nutmeg will be the béchamel sauce. Then I'll cheat a bit and cook the pasta sheets before we use them. Some chefs swear by doing this with dry pasta, but I think we should make our life easier here. Now, if we had time and energy, I'd make a full, long-cooked ragu, but that takes two to three hours and I'm certain you'd wilt before that was done. We'll have to eat something small to tide us over until this is all baked anyway, but... OK. Cooking the lasagna sheets. We have to make sure they don't stick to each other, so we cook them separately, just a moment for each..."
It was an experience like no other.
The kitchen was humid and redolent with spices from all corners of the globe, tomato sauce and butter, the food was starting to actually look like something one could eat, the grated cheese was waiting in the fridge and the pasta sheets were being dropped into (and quickly fished out of) water one by one and layered in a square glass dish.
All of this accompanied by a constant commentary, corrections to Peter's chopping, stirring and pouring technique (there was apparently a better and worse way of pouring the milk into the white sauce), side-stories about food from various regions and, what made his face heat up even more than the vapour from the cooking, constant praise.
Iron Man, the domestic mode.
And then there was a bowl of salad with finely shredded chicken and spinach and other things that Peter usually associated with 'to be avoided' category in the cafeteria.
"Eat," Mr Stark said, pushing a plate in his direction. "I won't have you fainting on me like a Victorian lady because of lack of nourishment, but this thing is not food," he pointed to the sad, limp sandwich. "We'll have to work on your eating habits at some point, but for now, let's resolve the immediate issue. Bread, fork, salad. Eat."
Peter obediently dug in.
And it was glorious.
Somehow, the way it was made, or the chatter, or just the general thing about sitting at the kitchen table of the (most probably, according to various media) most prosperous entrepreneur of the world who murmured Italian songs as he stirred the sauce, it all acquired a certain additional layer.
Before he was done with the salad, the lasagne was in the oven, filling the whole penthouse with scents that, by Peter's definition, belonged in the higher-end pizzerias, there was a jug of lemonade on the counter between them and Mr Stark was pouring himself a glass.
Peter filled his own and they quietly clinked their glasses in a silent toast.
"How's the salad?"
He glanced into the almost empty bowl in surprise.
"Kind of... good. I mean, just good. Nice."
"Mhm. You need more protein in your diet, kid. And leafy greens. I'll make sure there is something appropriate fixed every time we are working in the lab."
"N-no worries, I can eat at school—"
"How long are you going to survive on what they serve there? This is not a problem, Peter. You are still growing, you need proper nutrients. You'd probably be better off taking protein shakes with you to school, actually, only they taste like chalk and cardboard."
"That actually sounds better than the cafeteria menu recently," he sighed. "At least cardboard doesn't smell of fried fish."
His bowl was collected before he even managed to get up and offer to wash the dishes and he was handed an apple.
"Sugars and vitamin C. Sit down and eat it, the dishwasher is fully functional."
The lift chimed faintly and they both turned to greet Mrs Stark and Morgan.
"Daddy was cooking!" declared the little one happily and nearly jumped into her father's arms. "Lasagne!"
"I see that today's lesson plan was heavily modified. Hello, Peter," Mrs Stark dropped a kiss on his cheek. "Have you been using our favourite intern as your sous-chef, Tony?"
"After you've dragged him all over the office, introducing him to all the ladies in marketing - do you know that they had requested his time for a photoshoot? - instead of giving him ins and outs of how the factories are set up, I don't think you have a leg to stand on in this..."
"I hope you both had fun," she declared loftily. "What photoshoot?"
"Yeah," Peter joined, finally catching up. "What photoshoot, sir?"
"The one for the 'Young Business' magazine. Haven't I told you? They are making a review of what internship in various companies is like and they want to include two or three faces from every major player in the market."
Peter choked on a piece of lime he had been chewing.
"Is Petey okay?"
"He will be," Mr Stark slapped him on the back. "Better now?"
Peter wheezed a bit, nodding.
"A photoshoot for 'Young Business'...?" he groaned. "These are, like... I mean, I don't have anything... unless they will go for 'lab chic' and accept my solder-splattered denims as part of the image."
"Don't worry," Mrs Stark hugged his shoulders briefly. "This is one issue that we can resolve pretty easily, we just need to take you shopping. Now, I think this is done," she nodded towards the oven that had just dinged at the half-hour mark. "Morgan, help me set the table while Daddy takes the lasagne out. Peter, hand me the cutlery, please."
The experience of eating with the Stark family was not very new, but the fact that he had participated in preparation of the dish and knew the details of how it had been cooked made it a bit more special than other cases.
"If you ladies could load the dishwasher, we'll finish the work in the lab now," Mr Stark declared after they had all eaten their fill. "There is a thruster that requires some calibration and Peter really needs to finish his philosophy assignment."
"I think this will be a fair division of labour," Mrs Stark ruffled Peter's hair as she stood up. "But I expect to see that assignment before you hand it in, Peter."
"Thank you, Mrs Stark," he murmured, slightly dazed.
"Also..." she turned to her husband, eyes narrowed. "Next time you two cook, tell Tony to use the big food processor to grate and chop things. It is why we have bought it, after all."
His mentor had the decency to blush. A little.
Or maybe it was just the heat from all that cooking.

off the rack #1303
Monday, March 2, 2020
This is a public service announcement. You will be ticketed for parking on the street during a parking ban even though the snow has already been cleared from the roads. We got a ticket parked in front of our house last week because we couldn't get into our driveway after the grader left a big snow bank at the end of it. I hope to spare anyone from being dinged with what I think is an unfair fine.
Amazing Spider-Man: Daily Bugle #2 - Mat Johnson (writer) Mack Chater (art pages 1-12) Francesco Mobili (art pages 13-20) Dono Sanchez-Almara, Protobunker & Peter Pantazis (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). I can't read the rest of this 5-issue mini. The art really bothered me this issue. It was hard to tell what was going on the first few pages and then seeing Peter Parker in civvies looking almost exactly like the bad guy confused me further. There are interesting mysteries about Spidey's webbing and a Wilson Fisk involvement with an explosion, but this story probably won't matter in the grand scheme of things, so I don't think I'll miss anything if I bail out here.
Punisher Soviet #4 - Garth Ennis (writer) Jacen Burrows (pencils) Guillermo Ortego (inks) Nolan Woodard (colours) Rob Steen (letters). Frank and Valery go after Konstantin by kidnapping his trophy wife. She's amenable to divorce by Punisher. Thank Garth for improving my mood.
Basketful of Heads #5 - Joe Hill (writer) Leomacs (art) Riccardo La Bella (additional pencils) Dave Stewart (colours) Deron Bennett (letters). Everything leading up to this issue has been circumstantial. Now the villain tells the complete story. I'm rooting for June to survive this mess.
Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen #3 - James Tynion IV (writer) Steve Epting & Javier Fernandez (art) Nick Filardi (colours) Travis Lanham (letters). Heh, it's the Joker who helps Lex beat the Batman Who Laughs. It looks like next issue's pulse pounding conclusion will be Lex and his super villains versus the Batman Who Laughs and his infected super heroes. It's been a while since the Main Man has been in a comic that I've read.
Avengers #31 - Jason Aaron (writer) Gerardo Zaffino, Geraldo Borges, Szymon Kudranski, Oscar Bazaldua, Robert Gill & Mattia De Iulis (art) Rachelle Rosenberg & Mattia De Iulis (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). I haven't seen Tony Stark in a while so I assumed he was dead. Nope. He was zapped a million years into the past by the master manipulator Mephisto. The devil tries to get Tony's soul. This is a wonderful full issue of Iron Man and if Jason wrote an Iron Man book, I'd read it.
Amethyst #1 - Amy Reeder (story & art) Gabriela Downie (letters). I remember reading the original Amethyst book when it hit the racks in 1983 with the Ernie Colon art. It was fun and weird with a plucky heroine. This new Wonder Comics book has the appeal of having art by Amy Reeder who wowed me with her work on Madame Xanadu and Rocket Girl. Here she is writing as well and the art and story is tight and concise. This is a nice substitute for the dearly departed Naomi book.
Avengers of the Wastelands #2 - Ed Brisson (writer) Jonas Scharf (art) Neeraj Menon (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). It's the origin of Captain America of the Wastelands. His name is Grant. I think this is a great way to change tried and true Marvel characters to make them fresh and new. Having them fight an evil Doctor Doom is nice and simple. Four Avengers may become five but they have to contend with a super villain first.
Suicide Squad #3 - Tom Taylor (writer) Bruno Redondo (art) Adriano Lucas (colours) Wes Abbott (letters). The new Squad's first mission under Lok's leadership does not go according to plan. Neither are these super villains what they seem. This is why I read Tom Taylor books. Forget about any new Crises and DCeased and pick up this most excellent comic book for some straight up action and skulduggery.
Kill Lock #3 - Livio Ramondelli (story & art) Tom B. Long (letters). I get why the calligraphy font is used in the Wraith's word balloons but man, is it hard to read. This issue explains why The Kid is innocent and shouldn't be branded. The four droids find the one who can lead them to the Kill Lock's off switch but she betrays them. This universe of sentient robots is pretty cool.
Jessica Jones: Blind Spot #4 - Kelly Thompson (writer) Mattia De Iulis (art) VC's Cory Petit (letters). Each issue has started off with Jessica held captive by the bad guy. The end of this issue reveals who that is and how she was killed and resurrected. I am looking forward to the conclusion to see how she defeats the villain.
Batman Superman #7 - Joshua Williamson (writer) Nick Derington (art) Dave McCaig (colours) John J. Hill (letters). A new story starts here. Part 1 of "The Kandor Compromise" pits the World's Finest duo against Ra's Al Ghul and General Zod. One of the bad guys is working with the good guys. I got bored of the fight between Superman and Rogol Zaar so what happened to the city of Kandor was a surprise to me. I'm interested to see the final fate of the shrunken city.
Giant-Size X-Men: Jean Grey and Emma Frost #1 - Jonathan Hickman (writer) Russell Dauterman (art) Matthew Wilson (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). This mostly wordless $4.99 US one-shot will be a quick read but I read it twice just to soak in the beautiful art. The story starts with the discovery Storm's body and ends with a problem after Ororo is resurrected. This leads into a story where Jean, Emma, Logan and Scott will have to save Storm again.
Leviathan Dawn #1- Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Alex Maleev (art) Josh Reed (letters). Leviathan succeeded in shutting down every spy agency and the leader has been revealed to be an ex-spy named Mark Shaw. The good guys are still trying to fight back but they're going to need help. Time for Kingsley Jacobs to start up Check Mate again. I like the players he's gathered. I'm looking forward to watching this game unfold.
Finger Guns #1 - Justin Richards (writer) Val Halvorson (art) Rebecca Nalty (colours) Taylor Esposito (letters). And now for something completely different. This new urban fantasy introduces two teenagers with a weird power. Wes discovers that when he shoots people with his left hand he can make them angry. Sadie can calm people down when she uses her right finger gun. They meet by accident at the mall and try to get a handle on their newfound powers. It's a cool concept and I wonder where these kids are going to end up.
Fantastic Four: Grimm Noir #1 - Gerry Duggan (writer) Ron Garney (art) Matt Milla (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). This one's all about Ben's bad dreams. I thought the bad guy was Nightmare but it's another one of those mystical villains that generally mess with Doctor Strange. I expected some sort of Mickey Spillane type story but there's no murder, just a pretty dame needing rescue. It's a nice character study of the ever lovin' blue-eyed Thing.
Detective Comics #1020 - Peter J. Tomasi (writer) Brad Walker (pencils) Andrew Hennessy (inks) Brad Anderson (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). Two-Face is back and he's more bipolar than ever. This is what I like to see, an old villain presented in a slightly new way. We still have the scarred coin dictating how Harvey acts but there's a new twist with a cult of fanatics and the Church of the Two Strikes. I love how the first page hints at the return of the Court of Owls too.
Falcon & Winter Soldier #1 - Derek Landy (writer) Federico Vicentini (art) Matt Milla (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). This 5-issue team-up starts off with a heavily armed and armoured hit squad attacking Bucky Barnes in his home. The Winter Soldier emerges unscathed and hops his motorcycle to find out who sent the killers. Meanwhile Sam Wilson is searching for a missing vet. The two meet at a government agency office where all the staff are dead. Wanting to know who's doing all the killing has got me interested in reading the rest but when a preppy killer shows up and kicks both of the heroes asses I decided to put this mini on my "must read" list. The kid's name is the Natural. Picture a blonde Damian Wayne in a pair of Chuck Taylors.
The Amazing Spider-Man #40 - Nick Spencer (writer) Iban Coello & Ze Carlos (art) Brian Reber & Peter Pantazis (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). The fight between Spider-Man and Chance had to do with a bet that Chance could get one of Spidey's web shooters. What bothered me was how easily that was done and Spider-Man's lack of urgency to get it back. There's a couple of foreshadowing scenes that will keep me reading however. One involves the Clairvoyant device and the other is who Norah Winters is working with.
X-Men #7 - Jonathan Hickman (writer) Leinil Francis Yu (art) Sunny Gho (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). This issue is dedicated to a new Mutant Ritual called the Crucible. It's a lot shorter than calling it the Arena of Death and Rebirth. It shows how mutants who have lost their powers can get them back. But first we have to endure a deep philosophical discussion between Cyclops and Nightcrawler. It's a real snoozer if you're an action fan.
Action Comics #1020 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) John Romita Jr. (pencils) Klaus Janson (inks) Brad Anderson (colours) Dave Sharpe (letters). I wish they would stop with the deceiving covers. It looks like Superman is trying to come between Lex Luthor and Leviathan but what actually happens inside is Superman fighting Lex and the Legion of Doom. If it weren't for Young Justice helping out I would have found this issue boring.
X-Men/Fantastic Four #2 - Chip Zdarsky (writer) Terry Dodson (pencils) Rachel Dodson, Karl Story & Ransom Getty (inks) Laura Martin (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). There's a lot of heroes accusing heroes of shenanigans concerning the disappearance of Franklin and Valeria. They are actually guests of Doctor Doom. Victor wants to reverse what Reed did to his son and I want to know why. With the X-Men converging on Doom Island, good old Doc Doom is prepared for an attack.
X-Force #8 - Benjamin Percy (writer) Bazaldua (art) Guru-eFX (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). Why did Oscar Bazaldua stop using his first name in the credits? Domino and Colossus attack the flesh factory making assassins using Neena's DNA. The organisation funding the flesh factory has a mysterious benefactor and I'm hanging around to find out who that is. I wish they would change either Sage or Jubilee's costume. I keep getting them confused.

For the week of 3 June 2019
Quick Bits:
Batman #72 essentially gives a bit of recontextualization for what has been going on during the series, giving a summation of events, in this third part of “The Fall and the Fallen” from Tom King, Mikel Janín, Jorge Fornés, Jordie Bellaire, and Clayton Cowles. It’s all right, with some glorious artwork as always, but it kind of feels like we’re treading water here.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Bettie Page: Unbound #1 builds on what’s come before and the magic of her unicursal hexagram pendant, but you needn’t have read anything previously as this first issue does a good job of weaving in the relevant information to inform this adventure. I quite like what David Avallone, Julius Ohta, Ellie Wright, Sheelagh D, and Taylor Esposito have been doing long term with Bettie Page and this is another fun start to the next chapter, blending Lovecraftian horror with a jaunt through pastiches of Dynamite’s current properties.

Tumblr media
Birthright #36 returns from the trade break with the start of the next stage in dealing with the weakening walls between realms and what terrible things may happen as magic keeps building up on the threshold of our world. The artwork from Andrei Bressan and Adriano Lucas remains absolutely stellar as they, Joshua Williamson, and Pat Brosseau continue one of the best fantasy adventure series that strangely keeps flying under the radar.
| Published by Image / Skybound
Tumblr media
Black Cat #1 is a highly entertaining debut, leaning hard into history and heists, with three tales spotlighting the Black Cat and the Black Fox. Jed MacKay pens two of the tales, one in the present illustrated by Travel Foreman, one in the past by Mike Dowling, both coloured and lettered respectively by Brian Reber and Ferran Delgado, that play stylistically off one another as they build up the respective crews and show them in action. There’s also a very cute two-page heist with cats by Nao Fuji.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Buffy the Vampire Slayer #5 begins a long dark night for Xander’s soul as he’s struggling with overcoming the demon trying to take control as a vampire. Great bits building what he means to Buffy and Willow. David López takes over line art duties here, and it’s definitely a change, darker and scratchier than what’s come before, but it suits the raw emotion of the story.
| Published by BOOM! Studios
Tumblr media
Captain Marvel #6 begins a tie-in to War of the Realms with Carol and Natasha trying to find Doctor Strange in South America. It’s a fun start to this story from Kelly Thompson, Annapaola Martello, Tamra Bonvillain, and Clayton Cowles with a Freaky Friday twist as they try to stop Enchantress.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Criminal #5 begins “Cruel Summer”, which Ed Brubaker promises to possibly be the longest arc yet, kicking off an investigation into a woman running from an abusive affair. Brubaker, Sean Phillips, and Jacob Phillips give us an intriguing start to this arc through a sad sack private investigator in Dan Farraday

Tumblr media
DCeased #2 continues the destruction of the DC Universe through a “not zombie” zombie plague. Tom Taylor, Trevor Hairsine, Stefano Gaudiano, Rain Beredo, and Saida Temofonte are telling a great horror story here, with some big casualties wiped off the board pretty quickly.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Deadpool #13 is another War of the Realms tie-in, dropping Deadpool into Australia to tackle Ulik and his trolls. It’s a decent start from Skottie Young, Nic Klein, and Jeff Eckleberry with some funny Wade/Blind Al moments and Wade trying to convince the Australian heroes of his worth as an Avenger.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Deathstroke #44 is part one of “RIP”, with Priest, Fernando Pasarin, Ryan Winn, Jeromy Cox, and Willie Schubert kicking it off with Slade’s funeral. Some interesting bits of possibility as to who might pick up the Deathstroke mantle.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Descendent #2 continues this conspiracy-laden thriller from Stephanie Phillips, Evgeniy Bornyakov, Lauren Affe, and Troy Peteri. This one’s a bit heavy on the shadowy organization being shadowy and light on explanation, but there are still some entertaining character moments.
| Published by AfterShock
Tumblr media
Eclipse #16 brings this series from Zack Kaplan, Giovanni Timpano, Flavio Dispenza, and Troy Peteri to a close. I find it kind of funny that the reason for the solar activity and underlying state of the world aren’t answered, but that’s been part of the through line of this final arc, focusing more on the characters and the heart that keeps people going.

Fallen World #2 continues this wonderful exploration of the new state of 4002 AD by Dan Abnett, Adam Pollina, Ulises Arreola, and Jeff Powell. The threat of Father-possessed Bloodshot in horrifying and the future is looking pretty bleak. Also, I think this is some of the best artwork I have ever seen from Adam Pollina. He’s really giving it his all for this series and it shines through on the page.
| Published by Valiant
Tumblr media
Giant Days #51 deals with the fallout of McGraw’s loss as we head towards the end of the series. The shift in behaviour for Esther to more responsibility and adult attitudes also seems to be a sign that John Allison is giving us that the end is near.
| Published by Boom Entertainment / BOOM! Box
Tumblr media
The Green Lantern #8 is one of the weirdest Green Lantern/Green Arrow team-ups you’re going to come across. With awesome demons from Liam Sharp.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Guardians of the Galaxy Annual #1 gives us a trio of tales and a framing story, focusing on the other heroes who were sucked into oblivion in the first issue, and where some of them have ended up now. Great work from all of the creators involved and hope to see them usher more stories of the characters.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Incredible Hulk: Last Call #1 is another of the 80th Anniversary specials, this time reuniting the classic Hulk team of Peter David and Dale Keown for this one-shot. It’s an interesting tale of Bruce wanting to kill himself and an old co-worker of Betty’s trying to talk him out of it.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Justice League #25 concludes “The Sixth Dimension” from Scott Snyder, Jorge Jimenez, Alejandro Sánchez, and Tom Napolitano. Gorgeous art as always, and an interesting bit of the League being more than the sum of their parts to choose a different way. There’s also a prelude for the “Year of the Villain” even from James Tynion IV, Javier Fernandez, Hi-Fi, and Napolitano and it’s a little grim. While they were gone, the world has been doomed.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Meet the Skrulls #5 brings this excellent series to a close, with hints of something even bigger than a Skrull invasion lurking within the Marvel Universe. Robbie Thompson, Niko Henrichon, Laurent Grossat, and Travis Lanham have provided a taut thriller through this series, but also shown that the tightest bonds in the field are really with your family.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Savage Avengers #2 continues slowly bringing together the team in the Savage Land, along with revealing the long time Conan villain pulling the strings. It’s bloody, violent, and great. Mike Deodato Jr. and Frank Martin are making this look gorgeous.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Stronghold #4 goes in some very interesting directions as Michael and Claire escape from the Stronghold’s clutches and go searching for the Apostate. Some absolutely marvellous artwork from Ryan Kelly and Dee Cunniffe, with some great repeated variations on layouts as Michael cycles through different lifetimes.
| Published by AfterShock
Tumblr media
Uncanny X-Men #19 catches us up with what’s been going on with Emma Frost since her X-Men: Black story across Astonishing X-Men and the beginning of this series, and, well, it’s also bleak. And there’s more death. Also a reminder that the Vanisher’s name is Telford Porter. TELFORD PORTER.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
War of the Realms #5 is kind of a mess of pieces, I don’t recommend anyone trying to reconcile appearances and locations in this book with any of the tie-ins, but on its own, it’s one hell of a gathering storm for the finale. Russell Dauterman and Matthew Wilson are unparalleled here with the artwork. It’s drop dead gorgeous.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Witchblade #14 slips back to the present to deal with what happens after Alex and co. get ported off to the future. I love how Caitlin Kittredge, Roberta Ingranata, Bryan Valenza, and Troy Peteri are presenting this, rather than just leaving us confused in the future.
| Published by Image / Top Cow
Tumblr media
Young Justice #6 concludes “Seven Crises” with some answers, kind of, but not any particularly satisfying ones, more just a bunch of hand waving. Which is not to say this isn’t good, Brian Michael Bendis, John Timms, Gabe Eltaeb, and Wes Abbott deliver a very entertaining excursion into Gemworld, with some funny moments and great action. It’s just that the questions about how and why any of this is happening or who these versions of the characters are and out of which continuity remain.

To start off 2019 with some positivity, I'm going to make a list of things that I absolutely love and make me happy in my favourite shows, movies, books, games etc. Small things, big things, no particular rhyme or reason. It was surprisingly therapeutic. Feel free to reblog and add your own!
Link being left-handed now let him use sign language Nintendo please
The entire Sector 6 Market section in Final Fantasy VII and the Honeybee Inn in particular
Zuko's character arc
The Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack
Final Fantasy X's worldbuilding
Everything about Disney's Mary Poppins it put me in a good mood for three days straight
How Percy absolutely adores his mum and is supportive of her relationship with Paul (after a while)
Edward Elric
(Yes. Just Edward Elric as a character, person, concept, actions...)
Major character design kink: boys with long (ish) blonde hair (see Edward, Link, Zidane, Howl)
Final Fantasy IX's soundtrack
Aerith and Tifa being close friends despite both being in love with Cloud
The Gentleman Bastard Sequence's worldbuilding
The fact that one of the characters in Zootopia speaks with my city's accent in the Italian dub (you never see it in any movie)
Final Fantasy IV's world being just vague enough that it tickles my creative bone to expand on it
Kingdom Hearts I using original storylines for the Disney Worlds
How Yato's eyes are very a very clear indication that he's a supernatural being in Noragami, being unnaturally light and bright
That one panel in the Kingdom Hearts II manga where an almost-naked Pete carries Maleficent bridal style out of the collapsing tower
Sleeping Beauty's art style and instrumental soundtrack
The fact that two super popular shonen manga/anime have leads who are super smart instead of being dumb muscle or the stock happy-go-lucky-not-very-bright protagonist (Fullmetal Alchemist and My Hero Academia)
How some of the Olympians like Hermes and Poseidon are so casual when interacting with mortals
The scene where the Spaceport is revealed in Treasure Planet and the look of the film in general
The first few chapters of the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga before card games took over the plot
People in the Gentleman Bastard Sequence being emotionally honest despite being literal con artists
The theatre motif in The Republic of Thieves
Cloud, Aerith and Tifa threatening Don Corneo, but especially Aerith saying that "she'll rip it off" if he doesn't cooperate
Locke and Jean becoming pirates in Red Seas Under Red Skies
The Hunger Games movies being the most accurate film adaptations I have seen in my life
The Kingdom Hearts soundtrack, especially the vocal tracks, Dearly Beloved and The Other Promise
Final Fantasy VI shoving you in what usually is the backstory of a videogame and literally destroying the world
Edward defending Mustang when he had his sight taken from him despite them having spent 90% of their screentime together bickering
Tony Stark and Peter Parker's relationship in the MCU
Sophie throwing a tantrum after she realises she's in love with Howl and creating deadly weedkiller to express those feelings
Darcy being a goddamn social Disaster in every incarnation of Pride and Prejudice
The relationship between Roy Mustang and Riza Hawkeye
The Once Upon a December sequence from Anastasia
The mere existence of Zamira Drakasha and Ezri Delmastro and everything they represent
Sokka's role as both the strategist and the goofball in the Gaang
Peter Parker sharing a hot dog with Loki when he could have asked for anything because Loki owed him a favour
How the plot of Kingdom Hearts is so ridiculous we don't even question it anymore
Enormous muscly men I can still categorise as "super adorable and sweet" (Major Armstrong, All Might)
Howl being the biggest drama queen in the book
My Hero Academia's fantasy AU ending
Spider-Man (PS4) nailing the Friendly Neighbourhood Spidey aspect of the character and letting him interact with civilians
That moment when I was sure Bakugou was going to join the League of Villains but then he didn't and I've never been happier about being wrong my entire life
Zuko practising before asking the Gaang to join them
SNAP SNAP SPARK SPARK
Harry's wonder at every new thing in the Wizarding World
The fact that Spider-Man's backstory could just as easily be that of a villain but instead he's a hero and he has the biggest heart
Jake and Amy being in an Adult and Communicative relationship while still being themselves and each other's best friend
Winry being just as much of a prodigy as Ed and Al and building Ed's automail at 11 years old
Percy Jackson starting out as a standard straight white kids' series and Riordan adding ALL THE DIVERSITY as soon as it got popular enough that Disney couldn't say no
Charlie Weasley just outright trespassing into Hogwarts to smuggle an illegal dragon out
The soul and essence of Pride and Prejudice being passive-aggressiveness and sarcasm
Apollo's haikus in Trials of Apollo
Every scene using Deep Canvas in Tarzan
Winry and Edward's diametrically opposed reactions to the realisation they're in love ("Oh I guess I've fallen for him alright moving on" vs "Fuckfuckfuckfuck oh shit no why oh god aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh")
Lilo & Stitch's watercolour backgrounds
The fact that Roy Mustang's womanising persona is a facade to hide the fact that he's a) a huge nerd, b) going to overthrow the government and c) in love with his lieutenant
The "makings of greatness" speech in Treasure Planet
Spider-Man (PS4)'s swelling score as you start web swinging
The Battle of 1000 Heartless in Kingdom Hearts II
Sophie proudly describing Howl to Abdullah, him assuming she was listing flaws and her getting angry about it
Edward and Alphonse being atheists despite having literally met their version of God
The fact that Amajiki is one of the top three hero students despite his crippling anxiety
Rubicante recognising Edge as a warrior and apologising for Lugae's horribleness
Edge unlocking new powers out of sheer rage
Sora throwing a tea party at the end of Dream Drop Distance while his best friend was still asleep
The backstory in Skyward Sword about Hylia and the first Link
The "immoral manga" omake in Fullmetal Alchemist
The School Festival arc in My Hero Academia, Eri finally smiling and Deku and Mirio being the best big brothers I've ever seen
Kingdom Hearts III finally coming out this month
McGonagall's cat form resembling her human form
Edward finally breaking down at the end of Fullmetal Alchemist god I love this boy so much he has such a big heart
The Enlarged Suit Scene from Howl's Moving Castle
Most of Howl’s Moving Castle is a delight to be honest
Kairi's reaction at the news that she would be training with Axel in A Fragmentary Passage
The bonfire scene in Cosmo Canyon from Final Fantasy VII
Uraraka deciding not to focus on her crush on Deku in order to grow as a hero
Rydia summoning Titan and raising a mountain at the ripe age of seven in Final Fantasy IV
The friendship between Percy, Annabeth and Grover
Kairi and Lea looking like they're going to be a team in Kingdom Hearts III
Greed (at least the second one) claiming that his goal in life is to have everything when in fact he only ever really wanted friends
The Main Theme of Final Fantasy playing during the scene where the characters not in the final battle pray for the party in Final Fantasy IV
The Overture from Phantom of the Opera
Locke Lamora from the Gentleman Bastard Sequence being named after Locke Cole from Final Fantasy VI
Luna Lovegood never having to change who she is and remaining weird and happy
Terra Branford becoming more human by feeling not romantic love but maternal love for a bunch of orphaned children
The "You're not alone" scene from Final Fantasy IX
Darcy respecting Elizabeth's refusal of his first proposal and working to become a better person after she points out his many flaws
Neku learning to open up to people in The World Ends With You and literally saving Shibuya through character development
Bakugou's slow development into a better person
The sketchy animation during Disney's Dark Age
The official character artwork for Skyward Sword
Harry and Sirius's relationship
Spider-Man being a street-level hero and being super humble even though he can literally lift Thor's hammer
That little high-five between Sora and Remy in the 30 seconds trailer for Kingdom Hearts III
Rosa and Rydia immediately ignoring the boys' order to not come to the Moon and stowing away on the Lunar Whale
Plus Edge's adorable "Y-you're here too!?" in the DS remake
Cloud not being allergic to smiling and joking around in the original Final Fantasy VII ("Let's mosey!")
Thor and Loki starting to mend their relationship in Ragnarok
Into The Spider Verse has a scene where Miles uses Spider-Man comic books to figure out how to use his powers and it's the best and I love it
You know what, Into The Spider Verse as a whole because I saw it a while back and I'm still gushing

off the rack #1283
Monday, October 14, 2019
Happy Canadian Thanksgiving to one and all. Thank-you for reading this. The Jee Gang gathered for a turkey dinner yesterday with the littlest 2-month-old Ashton being passed around like a hot potato because he was tired and cranky. His mom got him settled but you couldn't hear his tiny cries for the raucous noise from his cousins. The kids took over the larger formal dining room now that they outnumber us old folks. It was a nice big family affair.
Gwenpool Strikes Back #3 - Leah Williams (writer) David Baldeon (art) Jesus Aburtov (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). Gwenpool tries to save herself from cancellation by holding a "Contest of Champions" in this issue. Guest stars galore. This thing is so much fun.
Catwoman #16 - Joelle Jones (story & art) Laura Allred (colours) Saida Temofonte (letters). I'm glad I checked the credits on this issue since I said that I was going to let this cat out after reading last issue. I will always read a book by Joelle Jones even though this one had me befuddled with some jumping back and forth in time and the added "Year of the Villain" thing. I am curious to find out Catwoman's decision.
Loki #4 - Daniel Kibblesmith (writer) Oscar Bazaldua (pencils) Oscar Bazaldua & Victor Olazaba (inks) David Curiel & Carlos Lopez (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). I love a good trickster. Loki uses a good one to defeat Nightmare. I like this Loki.
Detective Comics #1013 - Peter J. Tomasi (writer) Doug Mahnke (pencils) Keith Champagne & Christian Alamy (inks) David Baron (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). It's Batman versus Mister Freeze as the super villain tries to resurrect his dead wife. Batman's flame thrower costume is a cosplayer's wet dream
Doctor Doom #1 - Christopher Cantwell (writer) Salvador Larroca (art) Guru-eFX (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). This was a pleasant surprise. The art caught my eye but the story is really good too. There's no sign of the good guy Sorcerer Supreme from a while ago. Just good old fashioned arrogant Victor. He scoffed at a new technology to reverse global warming and is accused of being jealous of it because it was invented by Reed Richards and Tony Stark. When disaster strikes, Latveria is blamed and Doctor Doom sacrifices himself for his country. The mystery is who framed him and I will keep reading to find out.
Web of the Black Widow #2 - Jody Houser (writer) Stephen Mooney (art) Triona Farrell (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). What the!? Two Black Widows? Doctor Doom isn't the only one being framed for murder. I liked the clever cut-out on Nat's bathing suit.
Miles Morales: Spider-Man #11 - Saladin Ahmed (writer) Ze Carlos (art pages 1-8) Ig Guara (art pages 9-20) Dono Sanchez-Almara with Protobunker (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). Miles must solve the super hero's dilemma of saving a family member or a stranger's life. His decision leads to a confrontation with the Prowler. Is it Uncle Aaron? I can't wait to find out.
White Fox #1 - Alyssa Wong (writer) Kevin Libranda & Geoffo (art) Israel Silva (colours)
VC's Joe Sabino (letters). Another Agent of Atlas super hero gets her origin story told. She's based on Korean folklore. It was very well done and almost makes me want to read the new team book. There's also a peek at the Future Avengers by Alyssa Wong (writer), Ale Garza (art), Dono Sanchez-Almara with Protobunker (colours) and VC's Joe Sabino (letters). They're an Asian version of the Young Avengers but these guys used to be Hydra agents in training. Read on if you're wondering what turned them into good guys.
Age of Conan Valeria #3 - Meredith Finch (writer) Aneke (art) Andy Troy (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). I wish the art inside was a nice as the Jay Anacleto cover.
Marvel Action Spider-Man #9 - Delilah S. Dawson (writer) Fico Ossio (art) Ronda Pattison (colours) Shawn Lee (letters). The Black Cat gets caged as the kids finally work together and start to treat each other with respect. Next, things get even darker as Venom attacks.
Batman 100 Page Giant #1 - There are five superb stories in this $4.99 US one-shot and you'll feel like you just read five $3.99 comic books when you hit the last page. The only story that was disappointing was the Batwoman story mainly because she was fighting a lame villain named Lord Death Man. It was written by Steve Orlando, who has never impressed me. The other four stories more than make up for it though, especially Scott Snyder's lengthy contribution. This book is a steal at twice the price.
The Amazing Spider-Man #31 - Nick Spencer (writer) Ryan Ottley (pencils) Cliff Rathburn (inks) Nathan Fairbairn (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). More hints are given to the secret identity of the super villain Kindred. Definitely related to Norman Osborn. That mystery is the only thing keeping me reading this book. As if the waters weren't muddy enough, the guy in the straight jacket isn't even Norman. I hope we don't get strung along too much longer because there will come a point where I say screw it, I don't care anymore.
Batman Universe #4 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Nick Derington (art) Dave Stewart (colours) Josh Reed & Tom Napolitano (letters). I don't mind this time traveling if it means that we see Batman and Green Lantern team up with Jonah Hex. The chase is on as Vandal Savage gets his hands on his prize. I know I've said that I don't like time travel and Vandal Savage, but this is a Bendis book and I'm a sucker.
Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy #2 - Jody Houser (writer) Adriana Melo (pencils) Mark Morales (inks) Hi-Fi (colours) Gabriela Downie (letters). I think the Floronic Man chowed down on Swampthing and Ivy is next on his menu. Well, it's Harley to the rescue and the girls seek help from a fellow super villain to see what's wrong with Ivy. I'm reading this because it looks so pretty.
Powers of X #6 - Jonathan Hickman (writer) R.B. Silva & Pepe Larraz (art) Marte Gracia & David Curiel (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). The house is built and the power has been connected for a new X-verse. Jonathan Hickman has managed to make mutants relevant again for me. There are a half a dozen new mutant books coming out in the next six weeks starting with X-Men #1 hitting the racks October 16. I'll be reading them all to see how I feel about them but I can't imagine that they'll be all worthwhile.
Event Leviathan #5 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Alex Maleev (art) Josh Reed (letters). I'm curious to find out who Leviathan is but it's not going to have a big impact on me since I'm not a huge DC fan. I'm sure DC fans might be able to suss out the secret given the Manhunter clue in this issue but I'm going to have to wait until next issue when all is revealed.
Joker/Harley: Criminal Sanity #1 - Kami Garcia (writer) Mico Suayan & Mike Mayhew (art) Richard Starkings of Comicraft (letters). I love new and different takes on iconic characters and this one is a killer. Harleen Quinzel is Doctor Harley Quinn, GCPD profiler, who is working a 5-year-old cold case of the murder of a hospital employee. Meanwhile there are other new murders landing on her desk. The writing is tight and the characterisations are vivid, helped by the beautiful art. Mico's black and white art chronicles the present while Mike's gorgeous colour art handles the flashbacks. DC's Black Label imprint is well worth checking out if you're a mature reader. This mystery not only looked good but made me feel good after I finished reading. I can't wait to find out what happens next.
Contagion #2 - Ed Brisson (writer) Stephen Segovia (art) Veronica Gandini (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). I know I said that I wasn't going to read any more of this 5-issue mini but this was on the racks with the awesome Power Man and Iron Fist cover so I snagged one after I finished reading all the others for the week. This issue was better thought out and the story flowed smoothly. Ben takes Sue, Reed and Johnny to Doctor Strange for help and the two of them go back to Yancy Street to contain the infectious bad guy. Danny and Luke are there helping the first responders and a couple of surprise super heroes show up too. The villain is briefly subdued but Doc Strange and Power Man succumb to the disease at the end. Uh-oh. The next issue teaser has Jessica Jones so that's reason enough for me to want to read it.
