Start of something Tokka I’ve been working on, rewriting Su and Lin the childhoods they should have had— but we’ll get there 👀
.
.
.
The sound of little feet pounding against stone tile echoed through the apartment. She’d move from her room down the hall, to the kitchen, putter around in there on one foot and then shimmy onto the other before dashing back down the hall that led past Toph’s bedroom back to Lin’s very own. It was mischievous and very likely, leading to the largest mess an unsupervised six year old could create at this hour so avoiding it wasn’t the best mothering move. But the blind woman’s foot was on the floor and had been for the past twenty minutes so it wasn’t like Lin was completely left to her own devices, at least.
The bar for parenting was horrifically low this morning.
“Lin..” She half mumbled into her pillow as the little girl attempted another tip-toe by the doorway, stopping immediately at the sound of her mother’s voice and her back straightening like a washboard. “It’s too early for whatever you’re doing so how about you get up here, hmmkay?” Toph asked, rolling onto her side and patting the side of her bed with two solid strokes. The six year old girl wobbled on her feet, hesitating for only a second before turning and scurrying up the comforter to the warm spot her mother had been occupying.
“I didn’t know you were awake, Mama…” She said softly, a short lisp in her polite voice and Toph knew that pesky wiggly tooth was still giving her problems. The black haired woman offered out her hand and Lin took it, the pale girl raising it to her face like she’d done a million times before and letting her mother’s calloused padded fingers feel the rounded dimples of her cheeks.
“Mhm..” Toph hummed, only half believing her little girl. She was polite and smart, and had all the makings of a fine member of society already at only six, but Toph knew there had to be some of her in there— Lin was just very good at hiding it. “You wash your face?”
“Yes, Mama.”
“Brush your teeth?”
“Yes..”
Toph’s thumb poked at her lips and Lin shut her mouth immediately, like a vice. Her soft and pudgy hand clasped over her maw like her mother would pry it away and Toph’s brows raised.
“Oh, now I know you’re lying, badger-breath.” She grinned, laughter exploding into the room and pulling from a place in Toph that hadn’t quite woken up yet as she began her attack. Her hands worked quickly, delicate and strong at the same time as she began peeling away Lin’s digits by the little gaps between her fingers. It was a losing battle for the youngest Beifong, twisting and bucking her small body as Toph’s arms only continued to ensnare her and sleep was shaken off by their tussle.
“You think you’re getting away, huh?” The elder asked, laughter still rolling from her warm gut as Lin barely got one foot on the floor— half out of the bed. “I’ve wrestled elephant koi ten times your size!” Her mother announced with her mighty master-of-everything voice as the floor betrayed Lin— the square stone tile punching upwards just enough that the girl was tossed up back into the mess of blankets and sheets, right back into Toph’s territory. Lin squealed as she took flight and with that opportunity, the little girl was left breathless and yet still trying to laugh as she curled into the sheets of her mother’s lap. Sleep was shaken from the both of them but a new tiredness seeped into both girls as the mellow Sunday light filtered through the blinds and they both worked on how to breathe again. Toph’s breath still came in laughs and sharp puffs of air as her chest rose and fell, hands pushing hair from Lin’s pink face.
They stayed like that for a few moments, breathing and being warm— touching as they so frequently did. Toph was never one for personal space, needing to feel to see half the world her feet couldn’t show her and so those same grabby hands had rubbed off on Lin after so many years attached to her hip. Lin rubbed her feet together beneath the blanket, constantly in motion even as she sucked in air and Toph carded her fingers through the girl’s bangs as they both breathed.
“You gonna tell me the truth now, little cricket or am I gonna need to touch your toothbrush?” Toph threatened with a smile on her face, the affectionate nickname making Lin’s feet stop their fidgeting. She’d been called that since infancy but the six year old felt she was much too big to be a little cricket.
“Mamaaa..”
Toph’s milk toned eyes rolled as she already knew the small girl’s complaint.
“Don’t call me, little cricket.”
“Don’t call you, little cricket.” The mother repeated back, an identical whine at the end of the nickname to further mimic her dramatic girl but at the very least, her mockery didn’t worsen the child’s pout.
“Alright, alright, enough lazing around. The morning market isn’t gonna wait for us and we’re already pushing it...” She said, finally pulling her hand from Lin’s bangs and pushing the blankets and sheets away as she placed the young girl back down on the ground from beneath her armpits.
“Mei-Rin and Nara are gonna be at the market this morning— the girls from school!” Lin announced, excitement ebbing into her voice as her feet slapped against the cold stones again in rapid little steps.
“Oh yeah? Is Mei-Rin the girl who’s mom always smells like potpourri or the one with the noisy earrings?”
“Earrings— they’re like windchimes, Mama.”

To be continued…

𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐤𝐢 𝐭𝐨𝐤𝐤𝐚 𝐚𝐮 a bit angsty
“in a lovely state of oblivion, he didn’t know how much pain he was causing her. “
hanahaki - an illness born from one-sided love. where in the person affected coughs up flower petals and blood due to the flower plant sprouting in their lungs. as time goes on, it will slowly become more and more difficult to breathe and their love will be the cause of their death. there are three ways to get rid of the unfortunate disease. 1.) you confess and the person who you love returns your feelings. 2.) you have surgery and remove the sprouting flower but all romantic and sexual feelings within that person will disappear, making them an empty shell of who they were. and lastly, 3.) you suffer in silence and die.
love was a silly thing in toph’s brain.
only believing it was some chemical imbalance, giving people an excuse to cling onto each other and have sex like rabbits.
she hadn’t had a good example of “love” growing up. her parents argued almost every night— these arguments ending up with one of them leaving the house.
eventually, one of them would come home begging for forgiveness. then they would move on, only for another argument to be triggered once again.
it was an exhausting cycle for toph.
love was useless. no one could actually ever claim to “love” someone so much that they would die for them..
she had this ideal seared into her skull.
so why, why was toph currently wiping her mouth with a paper towel. the towel was stained a dark crimson, while yellow petals laid in the sink and in her hand.
“oh you’ve got to be fucking kidding me”
-
sokka aqua. everybody knew the name.
being the goofy senior who was always their for comedic relief.
he was never reliable for the homework answers but was always there if you need a laugh.
an amazing football player, claiming that all his skill came from a little hope and a shit load of luck.
he also just oh so conveniently toph’s best friend’s brother.
and here she was, coughing up petals for him.

Been a while since I wrote any Tokka but I had a sudden burst of inspiration and just had to get it down before it disappeared forever. Just a quick little one-shot, not like my usual behemoths.
Rated: Teen
Warnings: alcohol consumption
Length: 3.5k words
Time frame: roughly a decade after the end of the war, maybe a little more
Tone: fluff, banter
Quick look:
Toph was drunk.
She wasn’t blackout drunk. She wasn’t end-up-on-the-front page drunk. She wasn’t even make-bad-choices drunk. But that last gulp was threatening to push her into talk-about-feelings drunk.
Sokka had had more than her, but he was nearly twice her size. And he always wanted to talk about his feelings.
“Why is it so hard, Toph?” he whined, sitting across from her at their usual table at their usual bar.
The flare of heat his words created in her body was something she was accustomed to. It was the effect of long years of (poorly) suppressing unfulfillable desires combined with her unbreakable habit of making dirty jokes out of everything. Sokka wasn’t in that kind of mood, though, she could tell.
As it was, the question threw her a little once she tamped down the inappropriate reaction. They’d just been talking about Fire Nation festivals before a brief lull in the conversation, so she wasn’t sure what path his mind had gone down in the last thirty seconds of silence.
“What’s hard?” Toph asked, making a supreme effort not to add a flirtatious twist to her mouth.
“Women,” he said with a huff as if he could read her thoughts.
“I’m sorry, I wouldn’t know anything about charming women.”
“But you are one. So what am I doing wrong? I’m an attractive guy. Smart. Fun to be around. I’ve got a lot going for me. But nothing ever works out.”
Toph sighed. She knew what the problem was, but she was reluctant to tell him. This topic was too serious. Too sentimental. It threatened to reveal how much mental energy she’d secretly poured into his love life.
But…she was talk-about-feelings drunk.

Imo, atla has a bittersweet ending
Aang is sitting alone and wearing the air nomads clothes, his culture clothes, a necklace similar to GYATSO's necklace. I can't even imagine the emptiness and sadness he was feeling here
There are no airbenders in the crowd
All nation gathered..... except the air nomads.
No one else in the crowd wearing orange or yellow.
Aang won the war, but his people are still gone.
Yes, he has the Gaang, he has Katara, he has Momo and Appa. But he's still the last airbender.
This is so heartbreaking.

I Picked the Ripest One-- I've Still Got the Seed, Chapter 1:
It's been seven long years since Sokka last set foot in Republic City and he's missed it dearly. After nearly a decade taking care of his father and helping settle matters in the Southern Water Tribe, he's finally ready to work on the city he and his friends so lovingly founded. He'd been too young, too overwhelmed to do so all those years ago in the wake of his breakup with Suki and feeling lost with what his purpose in all of this was-- but now he's back and he's ready to do all those things he intended on doing, even if some of those lost-feelings are still clinging to his heart. He has a new position as Councilman and he's falling back in love with the city, however more has changed than he’s expected— including his relationship with his best friend-- Toph. He hopes that with pushing he can mold them back into the fun-loving duo they used to be-- but his plans on fixing his relationship with one of his oldest friends is often hijacked by the littlest con artist he’s ever met.

It was just a dream, right? Not real. But it was so sweet, nonetheless. The howling loneliness that kept him awake at night was finally quieted, if only for this moment. There was no thought to it—no plan, no analyzing, no shame. She was simply there, in his arms, graciously letting him drown himself in the ocean that swirled around them.
I'm stoked to finally publish the first chapter of this Tokka fic! I was stuck on it for ages and recently found the will to work on it again, and I'm really happy with how it's turned out!
Rating: Mature
Warnings: None

Excerpt:
‘Just wanted to let you know Suki and I split up. It was mutual. I guess. Anyway, she went back to Kyoshi Island. I guess she figured it would be too weird for her to stay here and keep being Zuko’s bodyguard. Ty Lee has taken over.
Speaking of Zuko, he’s planning a vacation on Ember Island to celebrate your, my, and his birthdays. You’ll probably get an official invite soon. It’s been way too long since I saw that grumpy face of yours, so you better be there! No excuses!’
Toph lounged in her bed, her head against the wall and ankles crossed out in front of her, and idly tapped her finger on the letter. Her assistant had read it aloud to her about an hour ago, and now the words were forever etched in her memory.
Over and over again she replayed them, imagining his voice instead.
‘Suki and I split up.’
‘It’s been way too long since I saw you.’
‘You better be there!’
In four months, summer would come—along with her eighteenth birthday. It wasn’t a milestone of any significance. She’d celebrated the official beginning of adulthood on her last birthday, which had sadly lacked Sokka’s presence thanks to some political shenanigans in the Fire Nation.
How long had it been since they last saw each other? Since she last felt his strong arms giving her one of those bear hugs she pretended to hate? It was a silly question, of course; she knew exactly how long it had been.
Two hundred and seventy-five days.
Even then, it had been only briefly. His job as Zuko’s advisor kept him busy. Too busy. The frequent letters they exchanged weren’t nearly enough.
But he broke up with Suki…
Toph decided something then and there: She was going to make him see her. She wouldn’t chase him; it couldn’t happen like that. Toph Beifong chased no man.
No—
She was going to make him fall for her.
