Something great about Yasuda Sayo and how she's treated by fandom is that Sayo doesn't have giant boobs or a giant dick or "has both parts" going on. Sayo isn't sexualized and sensationalized in the way many characters who are intersex are. It's actually the opposite: Sayo feels that their (intersex) body is sexless and unlovable, and tries to reclaim and create sexuality in their (perisex) personas.

I don't see gross comments or fetishizing art drawing Sayo with the typical "intersex" body you see in porn. I've seen the usual "let's give this female character a dick so she can top" in some older Japanese works, but otherwise the fandom just... doesn't sexualize the fact that Sayo is intersex.

It makes me really happy. I related to Sayo a lot when I was figuring out that I was genderfluid, and as I figured out that I was intersex, I related to Sayo even more. It's really sucked seeing so many other fandoms treat "intersex" as a fetish. But for all the faults of Umineko fandom, it's never failed me on this front. And that means a lot to me.💛💜

I think a lot about the way polydactyly is described in umineko ep1 because of the emphasis on the surgery to remove the extra digit often being done in early infancy (therefore without consent), with the intent of making the person "normal" while they grow up not even knowing about it...

of course this hints at sayo having her extra toe removed to hide her relation to kinzo, but I can't help but think about how it's specifically described in a way that evokes infant genital mutilation, especially considering sayo's backstory. all of her character reads like an allegory for intersex experiences imo, which also adds to her trans narrative. a major source of her suffering lies in how her gender struggles were complicated further by the reveal that her body was operated on without her knowledge, which led to sexual dysfunction and infertility.

the narration talks about the polydactyly surgery and reiterates the topic of bodily autonomy (already a big topic in umineko's first episode with the discussion of reproductive commodification of women's bodies) by mentioning how infants can be operated on to "fix" a part of their bodies to fit the idea of what "normal bodies" are like. the parallel to the mutilation of intersex bodies is very obvious to me. in sayo's case it was done as treatment for physical injuries rather than a literal intersex condition, but the narrative centering the violation of her autonomy persists with how she has her body altered and is denied the truth, having never had any means to cope with the inherent trauma of it all because the priority of genji&co was always to cover up anything that could implicate kinzo. she gets everything on her birth records falsified and she is intentionally kept in the dark about her own life. her entire personhood is erased. again drawing parallels to intersex experiences, doctors and parents will lie about it your entire life if they can get away with it. it's not uncommon to only find out you were operated on and/or forced on hrt as an adult!

even umineko's overarching theme about the nuances of truth vs magic can be read as an intersex narrative... it's a common experience to find out you were being denied your truth and made to live a lie "for your own sake". that truth may be unrecoverable and kept from you forever and all you can do is grieve it. your body is made into a catbox. I don't want to get too personal but some parts of confessions were chilling to read because of how similar they were to my experiences as an intersex person and I had never seen these very specific things portrayed anywhere. of course I can't claim to know the authorial intent, but it hit hard even as an allegory.

intersex and trans struggles aren't 1:1 the same but they have a lot of overlap, especially in regards to bodily autonomy, medical abuse and the gender assignment of bodies upholding a strict binary. trans people are denied transition while intersex people are forced through it, so a character like sayo who portrays that intersection of being both with such care is very precious. her struggles are strongly rooted in transmisogyny, intersexism, class and family, all which had her systemically disempowered, dehumanized and stripped of autonomy and agency.

her actions are a desperate gambit to gain some control over her own life, to be in charge of the narrative even if it's through selfdestruction. the horrors in umineko converge into the theme of systemic powerlessness and denial of autonomy. to be made into a piece. all of it combined makes up the multilayered meaning of furniture.

Hello Sayo and Anonie 💚🌺🌸

I talked a bit about the sibling dynamics between Malleus and Silver in this post and I talked about Lilia’s parenting of them in this post (both of these posts were released before chapter 5 and 6 update in twst jp book 7)

So now’s a good time as any to update those posts a bit, though points from there still apply here.

Even if we count Silver sleeping thus making him over 400+, I don’t think their dynamics just equates to one is older than the other thus their actions equate to the “older/younger” sibling dynamic because of age.

I think it’s more based on behavior than anything. Honestly for me, while Malleus’ actions might seem spoiled and seems he’s throwing a tantrum to save his family while Silver might seem the calm one trying to stop him. It’s a matter of perspective 🤔

Malleus who was raised to be king and to be perfect, who couldn’t make mistakes, who saw Lilia change from his young years to now, who taught Sebek and Silver, and who as time went on, closed himself off still gives me the older of the two sibling dynamic. Especially when you consider that Malleus OB can be considered when the “older child” finally breaks after being under pressure for years.

Silver also still gives me the younger sibling vibes. He was raised by Lilia, Malleus, and the Zigvolts. He had expectations that he placed on himself because of this as well. Because of who his father is and who Malleus is. He also is more observant when it comes to Malleus as siblings are.

Both of them are aware of each other, comfort the other, and confide to each other, etc. as siblings do.

They want to help the one they care about. Malleus did OB after all because of how much he cares for Silver. Silver is rebelling against Malleus because this isn’t what Lilia would have wanted plus the fact that it’s literally going to kill Malleus.

Silver, I wouldn’t say is the calm one either, he’s able to hide his emotions (gee I wonder where he learned that from 🤦‍♀️), he also placed these burdens on himself that no one forced on him but because of his own perception.

While I believe that the older and younger sibling dynamic still falls on Malleus and Silver respectively.

I won’t say their dynamic is black and white in that way, in fact, I won’t say any sibling dynamics is black and white but more of a gray scale.

I say this as someone who is a younger sibling who has the responsibilities the “older siblings” usually does.

They both care for the other. Both show their protectiveness towards the other and their family in their own ways. They both have their own perception of their role in the family. They both have their views on certain topics and what they believe they are doing is right or wrong. And currently, those views are clashing. (To say it very simply).

Honestly, it just comes down to siblings being well siblings. They might not say it out loud that they are brothers, but their actions speak more than words will ever do.

They love each other and sometimes siblings clash and need their opinions heard and a few good punches need to be given 🤣

But everything will be alright in the end, because they love each other.

Now, let’s talk about Lilia’s parenting. Lilia’s parenting is…well, he tries his best and honestly, for his boys, that’s enough. (To a certain point)

There’s, of course, traits of the whole “raised the first one perfectly and the second one with more freedom as mentioned in the linked posts.

But Lilia raised them both the best he could with what he knew and his his abilities and what he didn’t? He learned, but that doesn’t mean he changed entirely.

With Malleus, Lilia was young and he raised and taught him what he could with his limitations. He learned to love because of Malleus. His world view changed because of Malleus. He accepted his ability to love and have love be returned because of him.

He also has to help Malleus and teach him how to act like a prince and future king when Malleus got older and more powerful. He was one of the few that Malleus would listen to after all.

But Lilia also learned from Malleus, how to savor food, the joy of spending time with others, and the joy of seeing someone smile. He helped Malleus get dressed. He taught Malleus about humans.

He loved and raised him as much as he was able.

With Silver, Lilia had more freedom, but remember that humans are different from fae. So Lilia had to learn that as well. He read books and what food would be good for humans. He had to learn about the difference in development of a human as well.

But that’s not to say, he did that all perfectly. He has help. Malleus who would make sure Silver was fed adequately and taught him magic and how to dance.

Be it fae or human, Lilia did learn, even though he was more “lenient” in raising Silver.

But what never changed was his ideals, he made sure that Malleus, Silver, and Sebek would be able to defends themselves. They would be able to survive without him. They can fend for themselves. He did what he knew best and what worked for him he did it for them. Because if he could survive and prosper these way, then so could they.

Lilia ‘seem’ to have a nonchalant attitude when it came to raising Silver versus Malleus. But the situations were different for both.

But is it really him being aloof? Or was it for him learning and caring the best way he could? And adapting? After all, like with the bat from the dorm card, Lilia wants his boys to be able to survive and thrive independently and this was his way of doing it.

But yeah 🤣 I still do agree that Lilia did take a more…carefree attitude with baby Silver before being lectured.

Part 2.

I think that Michiko and Hatchin is full of a lot of different feelings and experiences that Yamamoto Director personally had. I felt that when I wrote quite aggressive, or should I say, vulgar lines [in the screenplay for M&H]. She was grinning, all happy, every time she read them.

I don't remember if we had this conversation the first time that we've met, or maybe some time later - we once talked about anime for kids. And she said 'even if it's supposed to be an anime for kids, I don't want to make animes at kids' level'. What that meant is that sometimes, even if a small kid is not able to follow the story as they watch the show, they can understand it, when they're older. That's why she didn't want to make anime that targets small kids specifically. And that was a very nice idea.

Even after Michiko and Hatchin ended, sometimes we meet, and exchange mails. And talk about unimportant things... (laugh). Although recently, the topic of figure skating appears rather quite often (laugh). It's been almost 10 years now, since we met for the first time, but I still can't understand her at all. When she's strict, she's really strict, and when she's lenient, she's just lenient. She's really 'how a good man should be like' [男前].

Umineko & Gender Expression

I recently played through all of Umineko no Naku Koro ni, and I was honestly taken away with the themes it explored in Chiru. It's not a topic I would have expected to see from Ryukishi07 after Higurashi, but then again I guess he has always played with identity issues, albeit in a different light.

I knew that Ryukishi was always very knowledgable in psychology, but given the nature of Higurashi and even earlier parts of Umineko, I couldn't have expected the series to become such a stellar example of gender identity issues.

The catbox that is Yasuda Sayo may be hands down the most interesting and intricate thing he's created.

And because it's so fascinating and complex--it boggles my mind that I see a large chunk of the community lean towards only one interpretation of Yasu. Or feel they need a direct answer.

One of the biggest themes surrounding Yasu as a whole is indecision. Interestingly, the fragment meant to represent their hope is in the form of Lion, who takes on an ambiguously gendered identity. I can't see this as a mere coincidence.

I ruminated on the topic for quite a while after I finished the game, and came to the realization that no matter which answer I tried to choose, none felt quite right. And that's when I realized--an answer isn't needed. Yasu doesn't require a label to be understood. What Yasu was born as, what their gender is or their current genitals--just does not matter. As Will said, it's an answer that lies outside the catbox (of the game). We don't need to know it to understand Yasu as a character and the struggles they go through.

I think ultimately, what Yasu was born as is irrelevant. Yasu's birth genitals existed for a very short amount of time, and there is a strange importance placed on something that may not have even existed for a year and did not impact their gender. Damaged or removed sex organs leads to a hormonal deficiency, and affects the development (or non-development) of sex organs and whether or not your body goes through puberty. Yasu was raised female and believed to be so, until their body failed to show signs of puberty. Dysphoria can be caused by a number of factors, and not all have the exact same symptoms. Yasu's dysphoria appears to be a symptom of lacking those organs entirely, rather than due to a gender assignment given to them. However, we do not have enough information to determine if that is the sole factor.

Due to Lion's existence, we can surmise that regardless of the incident, Yasu would have issues with their identity to some extent. Hence, the cliff incident is irrelevant in the overall picture--and thus to the story at hand.

The key factor here is ambiguity and indecision. Yasu was unable to choose whether to pursue their lifelong view as what they considered to be a normal girl in the form of Shannon, or to find a new life and happiness in the form of Kanon. Kanon was not necessarily born out of want; but as a means to cope with the reality of their body and lack of expected development. Despite Kanon initially being a persona that Yasu shoved all their ugly and negative feelings on, Kanon eventually gained importance as a person due to Jessica, thus leading to further identity struggles.

I think that to label Yasu is to take away their struggles. The fact that they hadn't decided what kind of life to lead. That they were unstable, swaying between sides, unable to choose just one identity to go forward with.

Not everyone in this world fits cleanly into a box, into one single label. Many reject it outright for their own idea of freedom. So who are we, to label Yasu, who was still in the midst of figuring out who they were? To deny their indecision and decide it must be one way? There is a lot of discussion about agency regarding LGBT+ characters, yet all the talk of interpreting what one must be, to have one, true labeled identity, erases that very agency.

Yasu is interesting and complex because there is no answer. There are many works of LGBT+ characters coming to terms with their identities, but not very many where one dies in the midst of that journey.

Many themes in Umineko are left up to interpretation--including many things regarding Yasu--so while it's not necessarily wrong to think on it, I also want to present the avenue that not coming to a clear answer can be an answer in and of itself.

oh my god you should NOT have asked. i'm on episode eight but i have so many. do NOT read this if you haven't read umineko, you HAVE to go through the experience completely unspoiled. tw: incest, christianity, death, but none in a positive light

my most recent thoughts have been provoked by the riddles in episode 8 and how kyrie and rudolf had just told eva they do not fault her for any harm she caused ange. it strikes you as odd at first, because they would never say that, but then you realize two things: this is very similar to the golden land and this is battler's chessboard. battler already knows about sayo and what she wanted from his as beatrice, what she wanted from everyone as beatrice: recognition. she is a girl who used to follow god's tests so blindly and has sinned so badly. she wants people to see her innocence, know of the sins that harmed her, forgive the sins that she caused herself. that is, at the end of the day, what everyone wants, and battler is treating everyone like it, in honor of beatrice. this is a very difficult topic for me to see in media. the idea that every person, no matter how horrible their actions and nature, has a heart and wants forgiveness, is something i can't accept because i, too, am human. what would i be if i forgave and understood everyone? what would i be without hate and revenge and a personal view on things? if i accepted everyone's truths, there would be nothing of myself left. but the idea is true, and i have to know it deep down, tame it carefully.

my thoughts overall, though? i could never put them in one single post. this novel is amazing in many ways - it's a love letter to an entire library of books, it's a love letter to love, but there is also no good love in this story. there is fake love, true love, great love, but there is no love that is good, normal, because the ushiromiya family didn't have it in the first place. kinzo built this family on blood-stained gold and adultery. this family is like a locked room itself in many ways (god, they even represent it with the incest), and nothing good ever happens in a locked room. while i haven't yet reached the end of episode 8, i hope they all die. i hope ange never really survived the fall from the building, actually. i hope it ends, i hope the room exploded and there is nothing left of the ushiromiya family now, not of the gold, not of the love, not of the anything. it probably won't be like that, though. bern promised there wouldn't be a happy ending.

sayo's story is the greatest story i have ever seen a character have, no joke. "greatest" as in enormous in it's tragedy and richness, an endless universe collapsing in on itself because it can't, of course, exist with just one person. of course she did everything wrong, nothing right has ever been in her nature.

i also loved the biblical symbolism, of course. how could i not. the figure of god specifically is something so subtle i almost missed it, but at the end of the day, three girls share that imaginary friend - sayo, maria and dlanor. for all three, it's their father/authority figure/commander in different ways. sayo ends up burning kinzo again and again, commiting rightful patricide, and also essentially rebels against god by giving up on his test and befriending demons. it's a nice touch. i have my own issues with the demon summoning (i dabbled in the occult long before playing umineko) but it's just a technicality.

anyways, serious stuff aside - loved the toxic yuri, loved the fuckedupedness of it all, loved the fact that the narrators are NEVER reliable and you shouldn't listen to the game, like, at all, but also you should. i was frequently theorizing about the origins of beatrice during my playthrough and talked to my friend about it, who had already finished umineko long ago. at a point of episode... 6? 5? i basically said "fuck this, i'm not even going to try. shannon is beatrice, shannon is part of beatrice, kannon is beatrice, fucking everyone is beatrice. i give up" and it was really hard for him to, like, be normal. thank you [REDACTED] for not spoiling anything. i am on my way to finish episode 8 and obsess about the music forever.

this isn't really a question but i wanted to say thank you as a longtime intersex fan of Umineko for your posts on Sayo (Et. al)'s experiences with intersexism and your analysis of them through an Intersex-lens. Not only were they well-constructed and fun to read, but it's a reading I immediately took out of the story the first time I completed it.

Before your posts I'd really never seen anyone else with the same sort of analysis and feelings about it (I did see a dismissal of it as if this reading existing was somehow contradicting the Trans themes or as even being transphobic; personally I see the two themes as being just as connected as intersexism and transphobia are in any irl analysis or theory, but I digress)

It's very refreshing and I just wanted to say a little thank you for posting it and for also giving me new Umineko thoughts and content to chew on through your blog as a whole. Have a wonderful day! <3

Oh!! Thank you so much... I'm intersex, and my partner is also intersex. And ever since finding that out about them (and later myself), I realized that the fact that I had to find out what intersex was was awful, let alone how rare intersex headcanons/interpretations were. I haven't seen anyone say that intersex Sayo is transphobic/trans-contradicting, yet. I did see someone say that since/if Sayo was CAFAB, that they can't be transfem, but that's another matter...

You're very correct in that intersexism and transphobia don't contradict each other, they're connected, and I hope that there's more theory in the future discussing the relationship between them, as well as more people sharing their own personal experiences with their intersex identities and their gender identities (trans or otherwise). Maybe that will help bring awareness and understanding to the topic (and I'd love more intersex-focused books!).

Controversial ask! I saw lots of people praying for what they wish for the new B-Day series to be (I haven't seen yours so this is my way of asking yours 👀👀)

1) A card where the baby versions and their current versions are together! I wanna see them baby and of course their feelings towards their baby versions!! It works really well as a growth card and sorry to say the best lore wise and visually B-Day series we got was Bloomquet!!

I agree with you! The Bloomquet is one of the best in the bday series to me. It’s honestly tied with the first bday series. I feel both gave so much to us lore wise and was visually appealing. First Bday I love because we the player were involved you know? And the groovies were beautiful. But the bloomquet!! The groovies were amazing! And the flower language!! Love love love, so many meanings!! I adore it 💞💞

Like you I would love love love to see baby bday cards. See how they view their younger selves and hear stories about what happened when they were younger 🥹💞 see how they changed.

I would also love to see casual wear bday cards. I want to see them in every day outfits! And see what they wear when they are not students but just themselves.

What are your thoughts on the degree to which Lambdadelta represents Satoko’s “Witch”? I know that Satoko kind of has a “Witch” in Sotsu that may or may not grow into Lambdadelta with time, but that notwithstanding, I think she’s an effective analogue for Satoko’s sense of “absolutes” and is an effective expression of Satoko’s traumas as well - Lambda being the “only one to understand” Bern as well as “her only friend” but also Lambda being the one to chain Beatrice to the game board of Umineko so she can’t ever stop playing and thus can’t ever leave Lambda.

See, I think the fandom overplays the idea that Satoko or Takano has to be Lambdadelta so I'm not a fan of the debate. Even Ryukishi himself was very non-specific about this during that interview. I don't know Japanese so I don't know how he phrased things but it's interesting how he uses may a lot in the translation.

However, you're right that Lambda has so much in common with Satoko. She has many quotes in Umineko that are direct references to Satoko, her dumb side is basically the same as Satoko's, and her way of speaking generally is too. Gou/Sotsu adds a lot to this too.

It comes across to me that Lambda is influenced by them both in terms of how he approaches and writes them as characters. Ryukishi likes referencing things a lot as a writer. He's really fond of thematic parallels and easter eggs. He really likes referencing themes, motifs and characters in loose and referential ways (e.g. why Chie Rumiko is a homage/reference to Ciel from Tsukihime (Chieru Miko)). Higurashi is influenced by Tsukihime as a work a lot and Ryukishi wears that on his sleeve even if the way he ends up approaching social issues and everything else is very different.

Bernkastel is basically this in Umineko because she's important thematically as Ryukishi delves into personal critique and further exploration of topics explored in Higurashi. She's more of an explicit Rika read but I think the fact that BT's favorite was Rika factors a lot into this.

It's also clear that Ryukishi has always been invested in the complications of Rika and Satoko's relationship because it's very messy, and Lambda and Bernkastel are an extension of that, and with Gou/Sotsu he had a further chance to explore a concept he'd had in the back of his mind but couldn't get into in the original story because the codependency of their relationship was something he felt went against the "unity" theme of the story so he didn't cast much spotlight on it.

There are many explicit parallels between Satoko and Takano in Gou/Sotsu especially in terms of how it's the former inheriting the role of the latter and the alternate ending Miotsukushi even has Satoko stating she sees much of herself in Takano, and believes she has the potential to go down a similar dark path if not for her friends. It wasn't written by Ryukishi but I do think that's an intentional read of her, as the traumatic backstories Satoko and Takano share are definitely intentional in making us understand why girls who have been severely abused might end up lashing out and doing bad things.

I think the connection between Lambdadelta, and Satoko and Takano is much more subtextual. She carries facets of both.

It's very interesting to think about though because I already feel like the major conflict between Satoko and Rika in Gou/Sotsu is particularly reminiscent of the one between Battler and Sayo which is the basis of the core of Umineko. So it's amusing how Lambda was Beatrice's patron and Bern was Battler's patron in the first half of Umineko.

I find myself much more interested in the parallels and exploration between Satoko's decisions and Sayo's decisions as they are incredibly similar so I'm sorry if this answer was very indecisive.

My theory on Kanon is that due to living in an extremely isolated and abusive environment in 80s Japan, Sayo needed to compartmentalize her attraction to women and her expression of masculinity/gender non-conformity as she didn't know she could just exist as a nonbinary intersex bi trans woman due to her lack of exposure on the topic. Her dysphoria wanted her to emulate typical, gender conforming, perisex heterosexual cis women and with her fragmented and dissociated sense of self she was unable to process that she could be a woman and not be those things, needing to split a new constructed identity that was a typical "heterosexual male" to align with her idolization of the nuclear heteronormative society that traumatized her. Essentially, this is all to say that Kanon is actually a butch lesbian
