A Chance
Fandom: My Hero Academia
Relationship: Toshinori Yagi/All Might X Female Reader
AN: With my love of BNHA coming back, so too does my undying love for Toshi rise from the depths to inconvenience everyone who tries to have a conversation with me lasting longer than 5 minutes. This drabble was inspired by the following mood board as part of a challenge prompt in the discord server I’m in!
Tags: Fluff, Knight!Toshinori, References to past sexy times but nothing explicit
Summary: You are given the chance to pursue your own happiness with the one you love.
Read it on AO3!
Tumblr media
“It really is unconventional my dear.” Your mother clucked her tongue at you before blowing on her steaming tea and taking a careful sip. You took a deep breath to keep your composure. It took nearly all your courage just to speak the words you had been sitting on for months at this point, and you had been prepared for a far harsher response. You gently swirled your spoon in your own tea cup, watching as the sugar cube melted away. You hated this blend, but it was Mother’s favorite and you needed any help to get her in a good mood.
Your father says nothing, simply watching you with a stoic expression. His tea cup sits full and untouched.
“I am…aware, of how odd it is-” Mother scoffs at your words.
“If you are so aware, why even entertain the idea? Honestly child.” She rolls her eyes at you. You bite your tongue, and take another deep breath.
“I simply think after all he’s done for us, for me, that he would be a good choice,” Another scoff. “And that he would…” make me happy, you want to say but don’t. Mother didn’t care about things like happiness in marriage. Marriage was a tool in a royal’s arsenal, like anything else.
“Oh yes, everything he’s done for us, and every neighboring kingdom from here to the coast! The man has no loyalty! He would sooner give up the crown to an invader than fight them! He has too many ties to too many people.”
“That isn’t true!” Mother narrows her eyes at your raised voice. You stiffen and look to your lap in a show of submission. “I-I am sorry. I just…”
“It is a foolish idea.” Mother takes another sip of her tea, opening her mouth to further admonish you for your proposal, but your father speaks.
“I disagree.” He rumbles. Mother closes her mouth with a sharp ‘click’. Your father may be content to let her rule the castle, the staff, and you as she sees fit, but every once in a small while he steps in. Those few times are almost enough to convince you he may care for you in some way.
“Father?” You prompt.
“He was born here. He trained here under my own father’s best knights. He has helped our neighbors as his warrior spirit demanded, but never to our detriment. Now that he can no longer fight the same way, why not reward him for his servitude?” Father blinks passively at Mother, the wisdom of many years of leadership in his eyes. Mother looks at him in shock, her own protests sounding weak now that she doesn’t have his support.
“Bu-I-! He is-! Why, he is too old now my lord husband! He-”
“He is as old as I am, and that brings wisdom and experience.”
“Wh-what of heirs!? He could never-with our daughter-!”
“Men older than us both have produced children before. It will be fine.”
Mother looks like she wants to protest further still, but you don’t pay her stuttered words any more mind. You stare at your father, a man you have spent most of your life fearing in some capacity. Fear of failure and disappointment, fear of losing him and leaving your home in disarray with no king to lead them.
Fear of being married off to some horrible man that would decide your fate, who would crush and break you under the weight of unwanted motherhood and wifely duties you would have no choice but to complete. Of one day suffering the quiet shame of having a husband who brings strangers to bed, of being an object meant to look pretty and nothing more.
And within this moment you dare hope that your life will not be as sad and grey.
Father looks at you and nods his head. You stand, your fingers twitching with the effort to hold back your excitement. Never before have you so badly wanted to hug Father, but you refrain. It would be improper, Mother has always said. You bow low instead to show your gratitude.
“Th-thank you Father. Mother. I must-...I need to step out for a moment, please excuse me.” And with that you rush out the door to the private study and nearly collapse against the stone wall opposite you. The cool, rough texture against your palms and catching the fabric of your gown helps ground you.
This is real.
You can-you can marry the man you love. Bring him into a life of luxury and happiness you’ve wanted to give him for so long-
The click of the door behind you opening and closing echoes in your pounding head. With hazy eyes you look to see Father standing behind you, proud and tall as ever. He is smiling softly at you, a gentleness you didn’t think he possessed. It's an odd but not unpleasant expression to see on his face.
“I…” He starts, lifting a hand into the air and holding it there, fingers pinched. With a sigh he drops his hand back to his side, looking to the floor.
“With age comes wisdom.” He begins. “I regret many things when it comes to how you were raised.” You blink in shock at his words. You can see in his face…a quiet longing you hadn’t noticed before. It makes something in your heart squeeze.
“I wish…I wish I had been…” He sighs, his shoulders slumping as he looks to you. “I had you trained and molded to take charge of the kingdom after my passing, consort or no. I made sure you knew every battle tactic, every political game, every form of self defense I could cram into you to make sure you could be safe. I just wish I could have taken the time to…let you be you. To be my daughter, not just my heir. I wish I could have gotten to know you.”
The back of your eyes burn. You swallow and blink. You cannot show such clear emotion, not to anyone.
Well…to one person and one person only.
That person is not Father.
“I married your mother because of the things she could teach you, the benefits she brought to our home.” Father steps closer to you. His arms lift, as if to reach for you. He freezes, hands shaking before he forces them down to his sides again. “I wish to give you a chance to be happy. If only in some small way. A way I never got to experience. Go to him, and you will be happy with him, I’m sure.”
Father has taken time out of his day to meet with you, to hear your proposal. He agreed to your proposal and gave you his blessing for the man you chose. He is standing before you and restraining himself from giving you a hug.
You take the final step to close the distance between you both, and your stiff arms wrap around his even stiffer form. You feel his hands slowly and carefully come to your back and rest there.
It is awkward and stiff and slightly uncomfortable.
It is the first hug you’ve ever received from Father.
You will cherish its memory for the rest of your life. He has made you happier on this day than you have ever felt.
Well, perhaps not happier than the day you met your fearsome and brave knight. It is close, however.
“Thank you Father. If it is acceptable, I wish to go see him.” Father’s arms drop from you as you step back, and he nods his head. You turn and rush down the hall.
~~~~~~~
You ignore the whispers that trail after you as you hunt through the castle hallways.
“Ah, her royal highness the cold fish. Wonder what has her in such a hurry.”
“Her highness is moving rather fast, do you think something’s happened? She’s normally so stoic and cold.”
“Just like her father, that one. Unfeeling and scary.”
Their words sting, but you hold your head high. You had thought you had been getting better at interacting with the staff, but apparently not if they still gossip in such ways about you. Your knight had been trying to help you be more approachable and open to others, considering he shined with charm and charisma like a beacon, but apparently you needed more work.
It didn't matter right now, in any case. You have more important news to share with him.
A tall figure, a flash of blonde, catches your eye down the corridor. You race after it and round the corner to see your knight and his young charge walking away.
“Toshinori!” You call, and the two figures freeze, turning to look back at you. You rush closer, breathless and excited. Neither of them are in their full set of armor, only wearing the thickly padded tunic that has your kingdom's blazon proudly on display. You take a moment to admire the way your knight’s cloak drapes over his broad shoulders.
He may not be as strong as he was when younger, but that thin, tall frame holds strength and resilience you can't help but love.
“G-good morning to you both. I apologize for the interruption-” You start, nodding at Izuku who stares up at you with shining eyes. Toshinori straightens up, his smile professional and calm as he addresses you.
“No trouble at all, your highness.” He bows low to you, and for a moment his hand twitches as if to reach for you, but he forces it still. Izuku jolts as if shocked, quickly blowing low as well with a muttered ‘good morning’ of his own. He's still learning proper protocol, Toshinori had told you. The boy shows great promise as a knight and you know Toshinori is more proud of this boy than he is about any other accomplishment he has in his long career.
“If I may, Ser Knight, I would like to speak to you about something…” Your eyes dart to the boy at his side. “Urgent.” Toshinori catches on, his eyebrows raising in surprise and slight concern before he turns to his student.
“Young Midoriya, make your way to the stables and complete your usual duties. I will find you later.” Toshinori smiles at the boy with a tenderness that makes your heart squeeze in your chest. The urge to kiss the laugh lines on his cheeks is nearly overwhelming, and you barely stop yourself from doing so. You need to talk to him first.
Izuku hurries down the hallway with an eager stride, no doubt wanting to impress his teacher when they meet back up. With your own barely restrained enthusiasm you grab Toshinori's hand in your own and drag him to the closest private spot you know of. He stumbles for a moment as you pull him, letting out a choked noise of surprise. You can feel calluses from years of hard labor under the pads of your fingers, rough skin and scars that make your heart flutter with excitement. You've had those hands on you so many times, and now you know for certain you can feel them again for the rest of your life.
If he wants such a thing, that is.
“Y-your highness-! What is-” You ignore his questions, making a beeline for the nearest hidden alcove you can think of. It's a hidden spot right outside the entrance to the gardens, one you and Toshinori are very familiar with. Memories of his fingers, long and thick as they brought you to completion over and over while pressed against his chest flash through your mind as you pull him closer. It seems the same thoughts are on his mind as well, judging by the growing pink blush spreading over the bridge of his nose.
The sunlight bleeds through the leaves of the many trees planted, flowering blooms bright and colorful as fat bees buzz to and fro across them to collect nectar. A slight breeze picks up and you watch, mesmerized, as the golden hair of your knight seems to shine as it’s ruffled.
To think, you’ll be able to see him like this everyday for the rest of your life…if he accepts that is.
His voice startles you despite it being a whisper.
“My love, what is wrong? Did something happen…?” Despite the concern you see in his eyes, his mouth pulls up in a shy smile. “Or were you looking to…” One of his hands cups your cheek, his thumb brushing against your cheekbone in such a tender way it makes your very soul ache. Your eyes flutter shut as you turn into his palm, pressing a kiss against the rough skin. His blush deepens.
“I am flattered darling but is this really what you would consider ‘urgent’? You had me worried for a moment!” He chuckles, a deep soothing sound that sends shivers down your spine. You squeeze your thighs closed at the sudden rush of heat you feel at the sound. You manage to find your voice and speak.
“N-not entirely, beloved…” Your voice comes out as soft as his, a whisper to be carried away on the wind. Toshinori pulls you closer, his free arm wrapping around your waist to settle on the small of your back, his long fingers spreading to grip the meat of your ass. You squeak at the feeling, your hips pushing closer to his where you can feel his cock hardening under his tunic. He hums in interest at your words as he buries his nose into your hair.
“I was speaking with-...with Mother and Father today-” You feel him stiffen against you, and not because of arousal. He pulls back to look you in the eye, but his arms stay wrapped snugly around you. Toshinori’s brow is furrowed with concern as he looks at you.
“Are you alright? I know talks with Her Majesty can be…difficult for you. Is that why you came to me?” His eyes widened in panic. “A-and here I am trying to-! I am sorry love, you must be upset and I’m just-” You can feel his arms loosening from where they hold you tight, pulling away to give you space you most definitely did not want at the moment. You grip his wrists, tugging his hands back into their rightful place on you.
“No! No, I’m not upset please! Please-” You nuzzle into the hollow of his throat, “please hold me. I want to be held.” Your lips brush against his skin as you whisper and you hear him choke. Those strong arms wrap around you once more.
“Ah, a-as you wish…” Toshinori’s voice comes out breathless, and you feel him press a kiss to the crown of your head.
“It was a good talk. I was…” You pause, trying to think of the best way to phrase your question. “I was granted permission to…to court whomever I wish…”
You feel him suck in a sharp breath, his shoulders tensing under where your hands grip him to hold him close. You can hear the sound of his heartbeat where your head rests against his chest, and you know under your cheek is the very spot where his scar resides. You want to spend eternity like this, just being held by your knight like you’re something precious for once.
“...Truly? That's-that's fantastic my love…” You hear Toshinori gulp above you, his arms tightening their hold even further.
“I think so too. I wanted to ask…” You pause and breathe deeply, grounding yourself. He wouldn't say no, there was no reason to say no. “I wanted to ask if you would consider…allowing me to court you, Ser Knight? And to one day be my King Consort.” You press a kiss to his cloth covered chest, right above his heart.
“My love…” You feel his hand, rough with callouses, cup your jaw and angle your head up to look at him. Piercing blue eyes that glow with resilience and determination stare into your own. “There is nothing I would love more, than to be by your side.”
And he seals this promise with a kiss.
If you ever write something with merman Toshi I will be the FIRST to read it omg, especially after the little deserted island description in the tags
you're in luck! so, i'm in the @prominencesmashers discord server, and for our next challenge we're doing a fairy tales theme, and i've decided to do something with that idea i posted about. so, hopefully by june 17th i'll have something written up for the idea!
but yeah, i've always adored stories about deserted islands or being stranded in the wilderness, so... it makes sense eventually i'd write one. i'm tossing around a few ideas now, like
the island being inherently magical
the reader being a researcher focused on magic
alternatively, the reader being a pirate captain who was mutinied against
the reader building some kind of boat and trying to get back with toshi being their only companion the entire trip
i dunno! just some ideas i'm tossing around. tell me what you think sounds interesting!
Twink For All
Tumblr media
Title has nothing to do with the content whatsoever, it's based on something funny my friend said in a Discord server. This is very much a SWF fic that takes place during Deku's Shadow The Hedgehog era, specifically when All Might tries to feed him lunch and then Deku responds by fucking off into the sunset [the sunset is metaphorical because it's raining]. Also I'm literally typing this on my phone while laying in my bed at 1AM and I'm probably going to post it without even reading it first. Might repost on ao3 after I actually edit it. Godbless
My UA teacher dorm reminds me of the dorms the "rich kids" had at my undergraduate university, so many years ago. Suite style. Two separate bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, a shared living room, and a kitchen. It was more like an apartment. Nezu told me that when he called me out of the blue one day and offered me a job teaching Quirk Theory. When I was first escorted to the dorm, I almost felt offended the moment I saw his gaudy American decor in the living room. I wanted to be pissed. I should have been pissed, because it was obvious what Nezu and the others were trying to do: get Toshinori and I to start talking to each other again.
The two of us had grown up together. His family hosted me as an international student at the age of 12. We continued to cling to each other even after his parents were killed, when he met Nana and was gifted her Quirk, and through our first two years as UA students.
Then Nana was killed. And when we needed each other the most, he pushed me away.
I realized many years ago that he'd only been trying to protect me back then, to keep me from being targeted by the same person who murdered Nana. So, it's not like I still hold it against him. But it still hurt. Especially because I had no one else but him, and he knew that.
Anyhow, Nezu's plan worked. Of course it did. When you grow up watching someone's back and being protected by them in turn, it's hard not to fall back into the habit of taking care of each other, even after decades of separation.
It's a peaceful, rainy day. I've been in my room for most of it, making the most of the opportunity to knock out some of the books on my to-read list. My bedroom door is wide open. It would not be open if I lived with literally anyone else.
Toshinori was cooking something earlier. I didn't see him, but I could hear him in the kitchen. It smelled like he was cooking one of the foods that he can't eat due to his many medical issues. It piqued my curiosity, but I figured it was none of my business.
I'm still curled up on my bed reading when I hear him return. He has a habit of announcing himself when he comes home, but he's silent this time. I'm immediately suspicious.
I'm still staring at the pages of my book, but I am no longer reading. I'm listening to his sluggish movements echoing throughout the dorm, a million possibilities running through my head.
Should I step outside my room and ask him directly about what he's been up to today?
No, it really isn't any of my business...
"Hey," Toshinori says from the hallway, his neck bent awkwardly to look at me so that he's not talking to the doorframe. He's wearing different clothes than he was before he left- his previous outfit must have gotten rained on.
Did he forget his umbrella?
"Hey," I say, sitting up. "You're free to come in, if you'd like."
Toshinori doesn't say anything, but he gingerly ducks underneath the door frame to step into my room.
The deep shadows over his eyes make it hard to tell when he's been crying. But the evidence is almost written into his posture and the slight pout of his lip. It looks exactly the same as it did when we were teenagers.
"Oh, Toshi. Toshi. Come here. What's wrong?" I ask gently.
He sits down on my bed, and he tells me about what happened with Midoriya. About how goddamned worried he is about him. About how lost the poor boy looks. About how he completely rejected not only the lunch he made for him, but Toshinori himself. About how he fell in the mud and ruined his clothes while desperately trying to grab him, to make him understand that he doesn't have to shoulder the burden of One For All alone. About how useless he feels.
I reach over and brush a stray tear off his cheek. He closes his eyes and leans into my touch for a moment. I relish in being able to offer him some sort of comfort.
"Is this how awful made you feel, back in the day?" He finally asked.
"I.....Yeah," I answer with a sigh, not wanting to lie to him. "The situation's different because you've taken on a parental role with Midoriya. But he's trying to protect everyone he cares about, including you. Just like you did. It's a side effect of having a hero's heart, I fear," I add affectionately.
He says nothing in response, but he lays down beside me. His thoughts seem far away.
"Do you want to know what you look like to me right now, Toshinori?" I say, pulling off the most serious expression I can muster.
"Hm?"
"Like a Golden Retriever who just got a shot in the ass at the vet."
He snorts. "You have such a way with words."
"I got you to smile, though."
"Yes, you did. I'll give you that."
I reach out a hand and gently stroke his hair. He blinks in surprise and looks up at me, and I quickly retract my hand.
"Sorry, I should have asked first," I mumble.
"Oh, no, it's nice," he says quickly. "I just wasn't expecting that, is all."
"Oh, I see," I say, still unsure. "Well, you're free to stay in here with me for a while if you want."
"I'll take you up on that."
I lay down beside him, and he nestles his face against my shoulder. I don't react externally, but I'm a bit surprised that he's initiating physical contact like this.
"You're really hurting," I say. "Poor thing."
He huffs in response, not wanting to be pitied. But he doesn't move.
Tentatively, I reach out my hand and gently start stroking his hair again.
"Your hair's getting long," I comment nonchalantly.
"At exactly what length should I keep it to get you to do this more often?"
I chuckle, grateful for the confirmation that he's genuinely enjoying this. "Any length works."
I don't know if anyone has asked these so apologies if someone has but:
What got you into MHA?
I started getting into it because I liked the story of the first seasons and I really related to Shoto's family struggles (minus the abuse, my parents love me dearly and are very cool).
What made you interested in AFO, All Might, and Hawks?
AFO is a petty princess and I love him for that. All Might is just all around cool and Hawks is also very relatable to me (Again, minus the abuse)
What's your number one favorite MHA character of all time? And if you can't choose, which are your top 5?
Mine are:
1. Kudo
2. Sanzou
3. Yoichi
4. Hawks
5. Endeavor
I included my own answers because I love swapping answers with other MHA fans. Hawks actually used to be my number one but when I found out more about Kudo I became feral and had to hyperfocus on him immediently 😂
I watched MHA initially when it first started airing, liked it a bunch, but forgot about it kind of til 2018 - where i also liked it a bunch, but then fell outta love lmao. Got back into it last year because I thought Star and Stripe was hot when I saw her on a manga cover in store, and despite being told she lasted like, 20 minutes I decided to catch up and made all my friends in my discord server watch it with me 😔
With why I like All for One and Toshi, er, peak enemies to lovers dynamic, I go wild for that shit. Toshi's wounded and also crazy and all for one is just a crazy pretty princes, perfect whump material, 10/10. Despite drawing Hawks a lot, i love him, he's far from my top 5 favourites lmao
top five faves are
AfO
Toshi
Toga
Ochako
Dabi
before i fully got back into it in the last year, it used to be uh toshi - shiggy - dabi - aizawa - izuku, but how things change lmao
[The white espeon looks at the children] Daaaw, they are all so cute! Are these all your children? What will they be when they grow up? Besides your daughther, of course, who I assume is going to take the throne after you.
Maybe I should have taken some of my great great great great great grandchildren here, they would love to have many playmates.
When playing the routes I noticed the differences in descriptions or progressions with each LI!! Is kenji by chance one of your favourites, Ive taken notice in how fondly and explicitly described as handsome he is - he’s super cute! By far one of my favourites, who is yours?
I admit I might have been a bit more enthusiastic writing certain routes, and you are right...Kenji was one of my favorites x) I love all the characters the same, but for different reasons, though the following three are the ones I'm really fond of :
- Toshio : He is my number one and I'm totally biased. He is the one I cried the most while writing his back story and forging his personality. I find him the cutest too because I'm weak for submissive/possessive (but not in a drug + cage way) characters. - Haru : Close to be number one as well, but is in second position. I'm really fond of Haru because we actually have a good amount of common points with each other. Because I failed to write him correctly, people misunderstood my intentions, but...I do love this character from the bottom of my heart so I really really want to be able to write him in a way people can see how much love I have for him in the remake. - Kenji : Please, hold gently. He is baby #2 after Toshio ;-;
Tumblr media
And of course I also looooove Ikki, Yuta and Ryu! It's honestly hard to pick ONE favorite, but yes...I'd go with baby Toshi if I really had to choose ~ Something that I haven't tell until now (or maybe I did on my discord server?) is that I also really love the characters parents backstories as well, and I think it might greatly contribute to my actual love for their kids. Yes, even Toshio's parents x) I really do hope I'll be able to show more of them as well in the remake! Each parent has something to tell and I think it would be interesting to see how their kids ended up being what they are as teenagers, and later, adults because of the experiences and interactions they had with each others ~
i remember reading about your reality swap snippet on a discord server, and I just keep thinking about it because it sounds so interesting from what I've read. Like hero All Might is suddenly thrust into a universe where he's a villain and AFO is the number one hero and when he sees him in his weakened form he hugs him??? Which I can imagine has Toshi screaming on the inside. Then villain All Might freaking out because Izuku has OFA in the other universe. Simply fascinating.
Oh Toshi is definitely internally screaming and is trying his hardest to stay conscious. Especially since this AfO is far worse than Villain AfO
And there's a reason why All Smite is panicking himself, but that is something that you can only understand if you are in The Vault
I was wondering if you could tell me what collections are and what should I do if my fic has been requested to be added to one?
Uh so a collection is a group of fics that can have a lot of different uses
Organize all the fics for an event like a contest or big bang in one spot, so it's easy for someone to find them all
Create a group of similar fics, this can happen in fandoms who are waiting for the tag wranglers to make something a filterable tag- the bnha fandom had a "OfA Is Revealed" collection and the batfam fandom a "Red Hood vs Robin fight goes different" collection, before there were tags for those tropes
Create a group of fics that share an au- let's say hypothetically, Gentry writes Anyone. Then Moon writes a crack "missing chapter" of Anyone, then Katydid writes a oneshot au inspired by Anyone, then I write a roleswap Anyone oneshot. We could all put those in a "Anyone Verse Collection" rather than a series, since they're inspired by each other but aren't one continuous story.
I've seen a discord server that put every fic that gets rec'd in it in a collection, so it's easier to navigate and filter them all and avoid double reccing, instead of just scrolling up in the rec channel forever
One person's favorites of a certain theme, like "Dadzawa fics that don't bash Toshi", or "Various Fantasy Aus", or "Short and sweet oneshots for when I have a bad day" or "fics that heavily impacted how I characterize someone", rather than using bookmarks which they might not do for whatever reason, finding a collection better suits their purpose
Personally, when I get a request to add to a collection, I just take a few minutes to scroll through it and decide if I want to approve or not. Sometimes I say yes, sometimes I say no- usually if I feel it doesn't actually fit the theme or if I dislike the other fic premises and don't wish to be associated with them.
Writing Tag Game
Thanks for the tag @cleverblackcat and @tejaswrites!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
12 as of now, though some of them are parts of the same story and I might weave them all in a single work one day, but I decided to split them due to time skips and changes in tone. I don’t know when I’ll be able to bridge all the gaps but I still wanted to share what I wrote, so I ended up creating a series with a couple of installments.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
140 699 words
3. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Watch the Skies - 125 kudos
Vatna of Two Falcon Hold as a companion in Dragon Age - 8 kudos
Mirrors and Braids ex aequo Rattle the bars if you like, but I chose to enter this cage - 7 kudos
Aval'var, it means - our journey ex aequo Avvar History Reconstruction - 5 kudos
4. Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
Yes, I do respond to almost every comment and I really appreciate receiving them. When someone comments on certain aspects of the story, I usually try to explain some of my choices, like why I decided for that character to react in such a way, why I deviated from the canonical storyline, or why I included those lore tidbits. It allows me to share my perspective, my reasons for writing the story in the first place.
5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Well, I have started writing an alternative storyline for my Avvar Inquisitor, Vatna, in which she becomes a part of the Jaws of Hakkon, which ought to be super angsty, but it has no ending yet.
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
Do limericks count? They’re fun but each is five verses long.
7. Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?
I had, in fact, the first fic that I wrote was a crossover between Dragon Age and Puella Magi - it’s just not published on AO3 and probably never will. It's pretty crazy, that’s for sure, given how wildly different those two pieces of media are, though strangely, I found a few of thematic parallels that compelled me to explore them for a while.
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
No, and I hope I’ll be spared from it. My writing is not perfect by any means, and I do welcome constructive criticism and corrections, but I probably wouldn’t deal well with hate comments. Mustering motivation to write fics is hard enough as it is.
9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?
No, not really. I have written some scenes that focused on sexual interactions, but they weren’t quite smutty, if that makes sense, as the POV character is a sex-indifferent asexual.
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
No.
11. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No. I write in English, even though it isn’t my native tongue, so I could probably translate my own fics if I wanted, but I didn’t feel like it so far. If someone approached me with an offer to translate my fic into a language I don’t speak, I’m not sure what my reaction would be, as I’d like to know how they present my characters in the translated version. Translation is a tricky craft, and there are many ways to express a single concept. Sometimes, a translated work has a completely different tone from the original.
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yeah, I wrote Fool's Gold with Toshi Nama as a part of Discord server collaboration, in which her Warden, Farin Brosca, and my Inquisitor, Vatna Einarsdotten, meet up to investigate a red lyrium smuggling operation in the Frostback Mountains. It was a fun challenge!
13. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
I’m not sure, I don’t focus on shipping that much.
14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
I probably won’t get back to finish my unpublished crossover xD But I enjoyed thinking about the possibilities, and I did have the general storyline thought out, but I don’t think I could finish it. For one, it would take a lot of time and motivation that I don’t have, and if I ought to pick a project I would like to see till the end, it’s the story of my Avvar girl.
15. What are your writing strengths?
I’ve been told my worldbuilding is well-thought out. I do have the benefit of writing fanfiction, so there’s no need to built a world from ground up, but I do expand upon what’s presented in the original work, and I greatly enjoy it. I wonder a lot about the unexplored details, like when I’m writing about the Avvar, I imagine what kind of holidays they could celebrate, what cultural taboos they might observe, what is their main source of food, how their families could be structured, little things like that, which, hopefully, create a compelling picture together.
16. What are your writing weaknesses?
My pacing is probably not that great, when I think about what I’d like to write, I don’t really ensure that each story beat is nicely spaced out, that there are no sudden accelerations or decelarations of plot. I do have a general plotline in my head, for the most part, but when it comes to writing, I focus on individual chapters.
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I think it has its time and place, but I believe it should be done sparingly. I wouldn’t be excited to read a super long dialogue in a language different from the one that the work is written in, and I won’t include such things in my fic. It disrupts the flow and doesn’t benefit the story very much, in my opinion. If it’s necessary for the plot or characterization to show that someone speaks in another language, I think it’s enough to use a foreign word or a phrase from time to time, hint at its meaning through context, and describe how the communication barrier affects the characters.
My main character, Vatna, does alternate between her native tongue (Avvar, which is I represent as Icelandic/Old Norse) and a second language (Common Tongue, which for all my intents and purposes is equivalent to English) so I do include some lines in a different language, but I keep them short. Usually, it’s just a single word whose meaning can be easily inferred from the surrounding text. More often than not, I signify the language barrier through other means. Sometimes, Vatna slips into her native tongue for a longer moment, and she may even have conversations with her fellow Avvar, but the actual dialogue remains in English (i.e. Common) - instead, I use the narration to show that the language barrier is ever present, like describing the reaction of accompanying characters.
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Dragon Age
19. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
My favourite is Mirrors and Braids, a part of the Saga of the Avvar-Daughter series, which focuses on Vatna’s reaction to the loss of her arm. Though it’s not really a “fun” story by any means, I am quite fond of it. It was somewhat cathartic to write.
How often do you get unhelpful/creepy/uncalled-for comments on your fics? You know, the type that come from people who have either plainly *not* read the tags at all or have such terrible reading comprehension that the level of misinformation they pertain to in their comment is just frankly insulting?
Thanks fully, i don’t get rude comments all that often.  The downside of that however is those few tend to stand out.  But usually after the frustration/annoyance subsides, they become very easy to laugh at.  Here are some highlights:
- the person who, based on absolutely nothing, theorized that the story of Angel’s Egg was that Izuku was a literal guardian angel sent to earth to protect and fall in love with Todoroki.  When I pointed out that Todoroki wasn’t even in the character tags, they freaked out and called me homophobic.
- also Angel’s Egg and some of the only comments i’ve deleted, but someone just kept being aggressively sexual about Izuku in the chapters while he was still an infant.
- long passive aggressive anon comments on Butterfly and Moth about how overhyped they are, as well as how bland and ooc everything is.  They didn’t leave any specific examples to back up their claims, so they clearly just wanted to be insulting.  The comments were written in the same style as someone who I recently banned from my discord server for harassment of other members, who has a history of attempted retaliation.  They also wouldn’t shut up about how great they thought Butterfly was before hand.
- more aggressive insults that always came within minutes of the above comments, also anon so it’s either the same person twice or one of their cronies
- every chapter of For Kurou I get comments asking why Izuku isn’t getting Toshi’s letters even though it’s stated multiple times in the fic that he never sends the letters.  This one actually still bothers me.
Sneezing Through Time
Tumblr media
Summary: When you’re sick, you end up sneezing to random points in time.
Author’s Note: This story was written for the @bnhabookclub‘s weekly prompt posted on their Discord server. The prompt was “I’m fine” and the AU/Scenario was Time Travel. Overall, I had a lot of fun writing this piece; it got my juices flowing. I might participate in more weekly prompt events in the future 😊.
BTW: if something isn’t historically accurate, I’m sorry 😭😭😭. I was going for humor lmao. Guess that B.A. degree in History I received was for nothing.
If you’re a writer (or aspiring writer) and a BNHA fan, please consider applying to join this amazing community. Everyone is so kind and welcoming! You will not regret it.
Also, this is not the sequel to The Point of No Return. That story will hopefully be ready next month so stay tune!
Enjoy!
Toshinori sips on his freshly brewed coffee.
Harvested from the beautiful lands of Chiapas, Mexico, he relishes the thick, rich, smooth taste of dark chocolate. A faint pinch of chili spice follows afterward and gives him the sort kick he needs to start the day. The morning newspaper rustles in his grasp as he reads about the latest world events. Everything is going as it should except…
You’re not at the table yet.
Toshinori glimpses at his watch and frowns. Something isn’t right; he knows you usually take twenty minutes to get ready before rushing to inhale your coffee. Sadly that cup is getting colder by the second while the empty seat sitting across the table mocks him. He raises the newspaper higher to block out the chair only to peek over it when he loses his concentration.
The chair screeches on the hardwood floor. Toshinori folds the paper under his arm and goes to your bedroom to investigate. There’s a trail of white, crumpled tissues coming out from the bathroom. Following the knockoff yellow-brick road, he stops at the doorway and hears a loud blow horn by the window.
“Honey?” Toshinori tiptoes over the random piles of Kleenex as if they are grenades. Sunken eyes deeper than the Pacific Ocean catch his gaze. He feels your forehead with a frown. “You look sickly pale.”
You dismiss his concerns. “I’m fine.”
“That’s a lie, and we both know it.”
“Toshi, I’m fine!” A slight cough betrays you despite trying to mask it in your fist. Toshinori’s stern face makes you cringe like a small child who got caught stealing candy from the jar. “That cough means nothing.”
“I’m calling you out of work today.” Like a firm parent, he doesn’t give you a chance to disagree. “And I’m staying home to take care of you.”
Before you could argue, a loud sneeze bursts out, and you disappear. Toshinori rubs his eyes as he taps his foot and counts the seconds in his head. You bounce on the bed wearing a loose peplos that flows down to your feet. A wreath of laurel leaves perfectly sits on your head like a tiara. You toss Toshinori a crown of wild olives.
“Brought you a little souvenir from the Olympic Games.”
He catches it with ease, but is too slow to reach you. An explosive sneeze blows into your used tissue, and you pop like a bubble that was pricked by a sharp needle. Toshinori sighs again. He wastes no time making a quick call to your boss who becomes excited to hear All Might’s voice. Unfortunately, Toshinori’s ear gets attacked by the man’s unintelligible banshee screams.
Pushing through the pain, he manages to snag a sick day for you. Toshinori is not one to abuse his hero privileges, but desperate times call for desperate measures. Hanging up the phone, a sharp swoosh of air blows behind him. He turns around to see you swaying like an intoxicated person who had a few too many drinks at the bar. Perhaps the high-end court party was too generous with their delicious wine.
Still, you feel woozy even if you didn’t drink anything. Any other day you would have appreciated how the gorgeous dark blue Victorian Rococo dress flatters your figure. The fine, golden embroidered floral pattern running along the fabric leaves Toshinori in awe. Who needs to visit the Met when you’re a walking Baroque painting?
However, you feel like absolute roadkill. The enormous hair wig weighs you down like a heavy anchor and disturbs your center of gravity. One small misstep and you’ll fall face-first on the floor. You annoyingly puff at the large, blue feather blocking your eyes.
“We are not doing any ballroom dancing dates for a long time.”
“Sure, honey.” Toshinori holds in his laughter. “Your boss gave you the day off. So why don’t I help you get—“ Another sneeze rudely cuts him off. A tiny feather gently falls to the ground as Toshinori’s head hangs low. Finishing his sentence, he mutters “—back to bed.”
Grabbing the dustpan, he cleans up the scattered tissues and waits for your return. It’s the only thing he could do when you’re sick and sneeze to other periods. The closet doors rattle and you stumble out with a painful groan, looking greener than Midoriya’s hair. Luckily the vomit subsides after doing some breathing exercises.
Toshinori comes to your rescue like the true hero he is. Your head bangs against his chest once the room starts spinning. You muffle, “Leonardo Da Vinci says hi.”
An arm cradles you closer into his warm embrace. He admires the cherry red Italian renaissance dress you’re wearing; it fits you like a glove. Your nose scrunches and you go still. A sneeze dangerously grows inside, tickling for an escape. Before you could unleash the chaos, two fingers pinch your nose close. A staggered breath slips through your gaped mouth.
“Blow,” Toshinori orders when a tissue settles on your nose. Gooey snot destroys the pristine Kleenex and joins the massive snow pile overflowing from the trash bin. He guides you to the bed. “Get some rest. I’ll make you a nice cup of green tea.”
“Thank you, Toshi.”
“Don’t you want to change out of your dress first?”
“No, it’s okay,” you mumble under the covers. The pillows feel nice and soft, like a fluffy cloud or a sheep’s wool. In between yawns, you say, “There’s no…corset under…dress.”
Sleep takes over the moment both eyes close. Toshinori stays behind and sends a quick text message to Principal Nezu about not coming into work today. He brushes the little hair strands sitting along your forehead with a faint smile. You look so peaceful, like a beautiful renaissance angel blessing his soul.
A loud snore disrupts the graceful illusion.
“At least you’re not sneezing,” Toshinori chuckles, fixing the pillows so you’re more comfortable. He shuts the blinds and gently closes the door on his way out. The hot tea, along with a nice, hearty bowl of soup for lunch, will help fight the cold.
Besides, he’s been itching to use the old teacup you “accidentally” brought back from your trip to the Ming-dynasty era.
Good afternoon, lovely kitten. How are you today? It's funny how your mutuals know you're such a whipped kitty. I get my fair share of teasing for talking about you with my coworkers, I'll admit. It's hard not to when everything about you is so interesting that it makes me go on and on so much not even Midoriya can keep up. I think he has all your favorites memorized by now. So, what will you be doing today? I'm about to have lunch (I assume you had yours?), tonight I'll be attempting to perfect those pancakes again. Take care, kitty cat. Love you - your Toshi 💜
I’d Take Even Disdain
Toshinori thought AIs were meant to make one's life easier...
My gift for @zenzenzence from the Toshinko discord server!
You wanted them to be stuck in a closet together, anxious Inko or falling in love with an android. This has a bit of everything in the mix, so I hope you'll enjoy it ♥♥♥
Toshinori crossed his arms and looked at the nearest camera, dead certain the ship’s AI was listening.
“Inko, this isn’t funny.”
“I agree.”
He jumped in surprise, as he didn’t expect a loudspeaker there. Inko – that was what the AI called herself – had cameras everywhere and while it had taken him some time to get accustomed to that, it made sense. He was just used to the robotic body she used, because it was easier to communicate with everyone face to face rather than face to camera. But body or no body, she was always keeping one of her hundreds of eyes – cameras – on their supplies, possible defects and everything that could, in any way, make their time in space unpleasant, or downright dangerous. And unlike him, Inko was able to stay on top of all the necessary paperwork.
Technically speaking, that was perfectly normal for an AI – the modern ones could multitask in ways organic beings could hardly comprehend, let alone replicate, but Inko was the first and only AI Toshinori had any closer contact with, and so her abilities never ceased to baffle him. He never planned to get one for the ship until David Shield, one of his oldest friends, convinced Toshinori to give it a try. There was only so much Toshinori’s little crew could do in one day, after all. It took less than a week for everyone to agree that Inko was the best thing to happen to One for All and its inhabitants.
Except now she decided to lock the captain in one of the storerooms.
“Inko, what are you doing?”
“I’m taking control of the ship. Please, remain calm, we will be landing soon.”
David didn’t warn him that this particular AI was a little different from the ones normally used in spaceships. Sweet, prone to worrying and sometimes stubborn. At least as stubborn as Toshinori, which is to say, way too stubborn for his liking at that moment.
“Open the door, or I will,” Toshinori threatened, although they both knew he’d need a battering ram to make at least a dent in it.
“And wake Izuku? I don’t think so.”
Izuku. That was a whole other can of Martian worms. He was happy to save the child from bai-buzzers (bai being an acronym of Bitch-Ass Insects, according to everyone that came into contact with them), but then the boy decided to rescue himself onto One for All. Toshinori didn’t find out until they were too far to turn back, so now he found himself between a child that idolised him, an obstinate AI, and a crew that found all of that hilarious.
He rested his forehead against the cool metal of the door and took a deep breath, willing himself not to cough. Inko meant well, that was why he couldn’t even get mad at her. He wasn’t quite on the top of his game during the fight with bai-buzzers and got himself hurt. It didn’t seem serious at first, so he brushed it off, happily ignoring the fact that his health wasn’t what it used to be and he was as vulnerable to infections as the unaltered human members of the crew.
But of course, nothing got past Inko.
“You made your point, now let me out,” he demanded.
“If you find it difficult to remain calm, please, help yourself to a chocolate bar,” Inko replied in the cheerful, robotic voice she usually reserved for custom officers and Izuku when he misbehaved.
Toshinori groaned. “Did you really just tell me to eat a Snickers?”
“I just want you to feel better, captain.”
Toshinori closed his eyes and sighed. He was tired. He had been so very tired for a long time. “It’s not worth changing the course.”
There was a silence. He glanced over his shoulder and felt something akin to relief when he saw the green light shining still.
“It is. To me, it is.”
His breath got stuck in his throat and for a fleeting moment he wished – as weak and brittle as that wish was – that she couldn’t see his face. For he knew that he’d be able to keep the wave of yearning under control, but only as long as that pain remained private.
It wouldn’t be the first time someone had fallen in love with an AI. Toshinori just never expected that it could happen to him.
“Don’t say that, Inko,” he said.
I can’t take kindness, he meant.
Slowly, Toshinori folded his limbs in such a way he could comfortably sit on the floor, his back against the metal door. At least he had company in that cramped storage closet. There was nobody he’d rather be with.
“Why can’t I say it?” The voice coming from the loudspeaker seemed different. Raw, shaking. “I know you have a lot on your plate. I know people depend on you. But… does that mean I can’t care? Because even if you didn’t want me to care, I still would. Can’t help it.”
He hugged his knees to his chest, smiling weakly at the camera. “You’re just saying that so I’d forgive you for stealing my ship.”
“I’ll give it back.”
“Will you?”
“When I feel like it.”
Toshinori laughed at that, comfortable warmth spreading through his chest. Then, without thinking, he said: “I love you.”
Before it fully sank in what he just said, the light flashed and died, only to reappear, brighter than before. Toshinori didn’t even know where to begin with apologies. Not quite how he imagined confessing. That is to say, he never meant to confess his feelings and threaten the easy familiarity they had going on in the first place.
Inko spoke up again. “I don’t know if I love you.”
“Sorry, I shouldn’t have-”
“I have no frame of reference for what I feel when I’m with you. All I know is that if it isn’t love, then nobody knows what love is. I love you, the best I can. I hope it’s good enough.”
Toshinori buried his face in his hands, feeling heat that certainly wasn’t a fever, rushing into his cheeks. “I’d take even disdain, as long as it’s from you.”
“Toshi?”
“Yes?”
“Stay where you are. I’m sending my body over. I want to kiss you.”
He smiled, mostly to himself. “I’m not going anywhere. Because, you know, you locked me in here.”
The green light flickered and he couldn’t shake off the impression she just winked at him. “Then I guess I’ll have to lock myself in there with you.”
