☆ Play Stupid Games, Win Stupid Prizes ☆

Synopsis: Thorn thought they joined the board game club; not the boring games club. Featuring streaming Dress to Impress with Iida, Azul, and Ortho.

Notes: My first twst drabble part of a small series in my fanfic called ~ Intermission ~ The full collection can be found all together in 'TWST Upon A Time' on wattpad/ao3/quotev. This short was inspired by Caseoh and Sturniolo commentary.

I let out a sigh as I glance around the board game room. Everyone else was getting fired up in their game play while I was left feeling drained playing twst’s version of Monopoly with two sinfully boring men. 

“Not that I’m not riveted to the spot playing ‘Proprietorship’ but can’t we play something more engaging… Doesn’t Twisted Wonderland have any video games?”

“Quiet! (I’m counting…)” Azul mumbled, eyes never leaving the board as he concentrated on strategizing his victory. 

“Don’t hurt yourself.” I eye rolled. 

Idia thumbed through his cards. “Just considering your best interests normie, since you know nothing of Twisted Wonderland’s games we gotta start on easy mode with parental controls.”

I side eyed Idia. “You two still owe me from that whole ghostly groom-napping. And I’ve decided I want to play a video game with you two.”

“What could I possibly OWE you? If anything YOU OWE ME for having to rescue you as well!” Azul quipped, head turning sharply in my direction. 

“Don’t start Azul! You failed! Became a Slapsville citizen, and I had to rescue YOU by the end!” I stood from my chair pointing at Azul.

Azul’s face grew flush from anger as he also rose from his seat. “I seem to recall a certain SOMEONE asking to reward their savior with a kiss?!” 

Sensing an oncoming argument from Azul and I, and not wanting to relive *that* Idia snapped. “Ok fine! Let’s go to my dorm room, I’ll teach you how to be a pro gamer!”

Idia’s room could best be categorized as ‘disorganized otaku’ - so the average otaku room experience. Posters lined the walls, and despite having an impressive hexagonal bookcase, topped with anime figurines and a Pain and Panic plushies, stray books littered the floor. Actually with so many clusters of half open boxes and cables, the floor was more like a mini labyrinth. There was a gigantic holographic-pod-chamber that looked like a prop straight from a sci-fi film that sat to the left of Idia’s desk. Maybe that was an elaborate 3D printer or a charging station for Ortho? Directly in front of his bookcase was his pc desk with at least four floating holographic monitors open, complete with *the* gamer chair. The chair, and keyboard were infused with rainbow led lights. His closet door and drawers were left open with clothes hastily shoved in. His bed matched the secondary theme of the room; dark blues, greys and blacks. The blankets and sheets were in disarray, and on the side that touched the wall was either a lamp or a tablet that had been clipped into the bed frame as a hands free device.   

Ortho, who had been milling about in the room, turned his head upon hearing our arrival. “Big brother! Thorn! Ashengrotto. Good job big brother on inviting friends over.” Ortho gave a thumbs up and winked. 

Idia made an indignant squeak and Azul just chuckled, pushing up his glasses. 

I smiled at Ortho. “Hi Ortho! I’m here to learn how to play video games, care to join?”

“(thank the great seven for Ortho… Less socializing for me!)” Idia muttered and thrifted through his room.

Ortho nodded. “Mmm! You came to the right person: my big brother is a certified gaming expert; there’s nothing you can’t learn with Gloomurai as your teacher.”

As Idia moved the monitors to face the side of his bed, Azul made a comment. “I’ve heard online streaming is becoming more popular - this could be a wonderful business opportunity for you Gloomurai.” 

“(Helping yourself, you mean…)” Idia glared at his ‘friend.’ 

“Let’s all commemorate your first time playing with other people physically by recording it, as a fun memory to look back on!” Ortho suggested. 

Idia sighed and gave his younger brother a wispy smile, “sure Ortho. (I’ll record alright, not clicking live though, no way I’m leaving a digital footprint with these two betas.)” 

“Oh! Senpai! I know I said I wanted to learn a Twisted Wonderland game but…” I started typing on Idia’s rainbow light up keyboard. “Ortho was telling me about how you’ve got an eye for fashion, and I thought,” with a right click of the mouse pad ‘Dress to Impress’ was loaded on the screen. “We could try playing this super trendy game where I’m from!”

“...Thorn who do you take us for? Isn’t this a kid's game?” Azul questioned, sitting down on the edge of the bed. 

“Ah! You would think so, but there’s strategizing to appeal to the judges who are also our competitors, underhanded tactics to ensure a clean sweep with a touch of luck. As much as it's about fashion, it gets cutthroat, petty, and biased. With us as a team, we’ll wipe the floor with these outmoded noobs!” I passionately explain. 

Azul crossed his arms, “hm, your egotistical tendencies are rubbing off on Thorn.” 

“Heh, it’s true I excel at coordinating outfits, maximizing their in-game properties while simultaneously keeping them ultramodern,” Idia cracked his knuckles, “I’ll show you how it's done. (Whoooa, I totally just delivered a badass cool guy protagonist line!!)” 

“I’ll generate some V-cam models so you can match with me, @ Cheerinja and @ Gloomurai!” Ortho said, eyes turning blue as he compiled a data spreadsheet and projected some models for @ Azzurrpod (Azul) and @ Alienprotag (Thorn) to choose from.

After the first round, everyone had become invested in obtaining a spot on the podium by any means necessary. Even after we realized Idia had accidentally hit live instead of record, we made the most of it and carried on. As the game play grew more intense, we huddled in closer on the bed, Azul scooting in closer off the edge next to Idia, I was on his other side and Ortho was next to me. Gloomurai’s viewership continued going up, with chat spamming messages and gifts, as we bickered amongst ourselves and them.

Our theme this round was ‘pirate’ it was Azul’s turn with the controller, and he ate I fear. Our character was practically a siren in sea captain’s gear. 

A smooth male computer generated voice read out a gift message from @ Shiiok.ing. “Captain Jack Spare-no-food.” [Donated 1 Madol]

Azul was not pleased and swiftly delivered a “moderators, expel that guy right now.”

The way in which Azul said it made me want to tease him, so I put on a silly voice and said “Mr. Electric, send this man to the principal's office and have him expelled immediately!” 

Idia and Ortho did nothing to silent their laughter. 

Before Azul could say anything, another message came in, from @ Whimsqueeze. “Azzurrpod, you’re built like my 83 y/o grandma.” [Donated 1 Madol]

“Unless your 83 year old grandma is 5’9 and ripped, no I’m not.” Azul wasn’t having any of it. 

@ Shiiok.ing added ““5’9 sideways.” [Donated 1 Madol]

“WHO TF SAID THAT?” Azul’s eyes instantly locked onto the usernames, he recognized these two jokers. He banned them from commenting for the rest of the stream.

As I hit them with pose #28, I half-heartedly tried to comfort Azul. “Man really spent 1 madol to type that out.” 

“Tch. Yeah.” Azul went back to focusing on the game.

During the next round, we were able to choose a theme, and every theme I recommended was shown no mercy. 

“No, absolutely not.”

“Yeah. Do better. Try harder.”

“According to my research, those themes aren’t popular. But good try!”

I was shot down so quick I just looked around at the group and deadpanned “so should I k*ll myself?”

Idia and Azul were caught off guard and laughed, Ortho however did not and asked me to never make that type of joke again. I agreed. 

Finally, the theme had been announced. A singular word was on screen. ‘Cat.’

“What clown put that in?” I asked, slightly ticked.

“That’s Idia’s theme.” Azul helpfully supplied.

“You guys gave me grief for ‘princess’ and ‘picnic’ but ‘cat’ is somehow better?!” I started. 

In the middle of our bickering, the automated voice read a gift message from @ Obnoxiou_thingg. “Kittens can you count down for me? I’m almost finished.” [Donated 50 Madol]

The room went quiet. While Azul and Idia had equally looks of shock and disgust. Ortho and I were lost. 

“There’s a timer on screen though? Can you not see it?” Ortho said this and double checked to make sure that the screen recording was still working. 

I added, “finished what? Using our gameplay as background noise to cook a cake or something? Just use a proper timer?” 

Chat spammed ‘r/whoosh’ as Idia and Azul looked at Ortho and I in a mix of relief and concern.  

Idia’s hair flickered red and using a deep voice changer he yelled “GET OFF OF THE CHANNEL!”

Ortho, Azul, and I laughed harder before going back to gameplay.

Once our live ended, Ortho stepped out to take care of some other tasks while Azul and Idia eventually came to an agreement on which video game was the best Twisted Wonderland had to offer. 

Idia was recharging with some gamer fuel, cute mini candy makers and sugary drinks. 

“It's like playing a game irl.” He grinned, mixing the highly saturated liquid with the smallest spoon known to man. 

Once the glowing green gummy worms had set, Iida offered Azul and I some. Azul made a face at that. We brought our attention back to the monitor.   

‘Final Kingdom’ An open rpg that featured a wide roster of unique characters with a compelling ever-changing plot with high stakes, battles, gacha, otome moments, and based on the player’s strategic gameplay - offered almost no two gameplays alike. The visuals and music were nothing short of cinematic. In my opinion, it was reminiscent of Fire Emblem x Monster Hunter. Of course, for the grand experience, Idia took us all the way back to the prologue.

“Can you two extras stop pressing up against me?” Idia fidgeted in between Azul and I, the tips of his hair turning pink.

“Do you think anyone enjoys doing this? Invest in actual chairs and we wouldn't be in this predicament.” Azul berated, purposely pressing into Idia’s side more.

“(The calculated possibility for people visiting was less than 0.01%.)” Idia gripped.

“Four floating screens and only one that actually shows gameplay, cut us a break senpai." I said.  

“Ugh.” Idia dropped the matter and continued guiding me through the controls and in-game lore and explaining any cultural references. Sometimes Azul would butt in just to argue with Idia’s knowledge. Ortho wasn’t kidding when he said his brother was like a teacher, it was very easy to follow along.

It was late into the night, and it felt like we had barely scratched the surface of gameplay.

Azul looked at his watch and said, “not that this isn’t invigorating, but I’ve got other business to take care of. So, if you’ll excuse me.”  

Azul attempted to leave when Idia shot back. “Heh, what’s the matter Azul? Malding ‘cause the noob is a better player than you?” 

“Past your wittle baby bedtime?” I smirked. 

Azul rolled his eyes. “Unlike you two I’ve got a lounge, clients-”

“Wah, wah, wah, give it a rest will ya baby?” I teased, despite feeling tired myself.

Idia added. “It's the first boss. But it's probably out of your expertise, of course you must have planned for this with your strategic exit.”

Azul snatched the controller and sat back down.

The first boss battle was beyond difficult. Even when Azul and I begrudgingly worked together, (read: hurled insults at one another) the monster remained undefeated. We wordlessly agreed and passed the controller to Idia.

As Idia played, I heard soft snores coming from Azul’s side. I glanced over and sure enough he was asleep. I looked up to Idia and he made no indication that he noticed. I yawned as I decided to rest my eyes. I’ll open them again whenever Idia eliminates the first boss.

“UHH?!” Was the noise Idia let out upon realizing he was trapped between his two sleeping board game buddies.

‘Whatdoidowhatdoidowhatdoidowhatdoidowhatdoido?’ Flashed in Idia’s malfunctioning brain. He attempted to wiggle his way out, moving backwards so the duo wouldn’t hit the floor, but he ended up falling backwards instead, causing the pair to lay on his chest.

A high-pitched whistle was let out as his hair turned a deep set rose color.

‘How do I keep finding myself in these overrun cliche anime tropes?! I’m just an introverted social outcast! This shouldn’t happen to guys like me! HSDJKGSCUHASOI.’ 

Thank and praise the Great Seven that Ortho had returned! Idia mouthed the words ‘save me brother.’

Ortho blinked and silently giggled and projected the message:

[Your socialization is leveling up. I’m proud of you big brother! I’m just here to return a book I borrowed. Good night!]

Idia resigned to his fate and passed out from embarrassment. 

Before Ortho left, he tucked the trio into bed and took a photo of Idia’s first sleepover.

The pair had subconsciously managed to use Idia as a mattress. The accidental cuddle pile was as follows: Azul’s head lay on Idia’s chest with his limbs outstretched, wrapped around Idia and Thorn - hugging them close. Thorn’s head rested slightly above Azul’s, while Idia felt comforted by the pressure and had both his arms rested on the backs of the prefects.

Idia and Azul were the first ones to wake up. Their eyes bugged out once conscious enough to take in the situation and frantically, yet silently, pulled away as to not disrupt Thorn. 

“(What are YOU doing? What were WE DOING?)” Azul whispered and shouted.

“(You two fell asleep and pinned me! I couldn’t move!)” Idia whined quietly.

I rolled over and rubbed my head into the ‘pillow’ in an attempt to relax. ‘Are Grim and the ghosts arguing again? Ugh I don’t care, I’m sleepy, can’t they argue away from a sleeping person?’

After Thorn let out a huff, the duo picked up where they stopped.

“(SO WAKE US UP??!)” Azul countered, fixing up his attire.

“(Azul I tried! I passed out from your normie germs.)” Idia informed, turning his head as far as he could away from Thorn’s. 

“Hmm? Azul’s here…?” I mumbled. Still not entirely awake.

“(WHAT. ARE. YOU. DOING?)” Idia whispered shrieked, vibrating in fear as Azul took out his phone.

“(Isn’t it obvious? Collecting insurance.)” Azul’s glasses let off a shine as his camera shutter went *snap*.

With so much shaking from the bed, I swatted my hand back in an attempt to get ‘Grim’ to stop doing whatever it was he was doing. “Hemmy, Julie, Cassey… Go take care of your son… Before sunrise he’s yours.” 

“Wake up prefect.” Azul said, having sat on the other side of Thorn.

Idia mouthed the words ‘what did I ever do to you?! Abort! Stop!’

‘Prefect…?’ Looks like Azul let himself into my room, impatient octopus. I sat up and turned and realized I wasn’t in my room. Azul looked like the cat that just got the cream, and I looked down to see a scarlet Idia covering his face with both hands.

“...What are you two doing?” I asked slowly.  

“Heh. Looks like we both fell asleep in Idia’s bed. Good morning and goodbye to you both.” And like that Azul walked out.

I would have spoken more with Idia, but he was a babbling red swirling mess. “Sorry for falling asleep on you Idia, I’ll just go now.”

Idia frantically nodded; face still covered as I left.

“I can’t believe you let me sleep with the two prefects…” Idia rubbed his face tiredly. As it would turn out, passing out is not a form of well rested sleep, who knew?

Ortho tried to reassure his brother. “Think of it to a practice run, after all, the Ramshackle prefect, she-”

“(she?..)

She?

SHE?!

WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHE?!” 

Idia’s hair shot up frantically as he stared in horror at his brother. 

“I misspoke.” Ortho looked off to the side. 

“IT'S LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR YOU TO MAKE A MISTAKE! I PROGRAMED YOU!” Idia panicked. “HOLY GREAT SEVEN A GIRL HUNG OUT WITH ME (and was in my room?! dsjfbjsbdfis)” 

Idia threw himself under the covers as his only means of protection against such a twisted fate. 

Ortho frantically waved his arms around. “Shh! Brother it's a secret!”

“Rip Idia you won’t be missed.” Promptly Idia passed out.

Thanks for the prompt! Ah, sleep issues and thasmin, two great tastes that taste great together! Anyway, here we go! (I even stuck to just about 1,000 words, I'm so excited!)

The first time the Doctor called out, Yaz thought she’d dreamed it. The second time, she shot out of bed and raced to the console room, convinced the Doctor had hurt herself tinkering and needed help. 

But the console room was empty. The TARDIS buzzed at her, like she’d provided the wrong answer to an important question.

“Yaz! I can’t reach you!” The Doctor’s voice bounced off the crystal pillars. She wasn’t here, so why was it so loud?

Yaz laid a hand on the controls. “Are you doing this?”

No answer.

The TARDIS’ level of consciousness was still one question mark in a life overflowing with them. Maybe the ship was trying to tell her the Doctor was in danger. Maybe this was some side effect of the Doctor’s connection to it.

Whatever the reason, the Doctor was in trouble and Yaz needed to get to her.

Through the corridors she ran, poking her head into every room she passed. Movie theater: empty. Library: silent. The waters in the three pools were flat and still. Yaz checked bedrooms and basketball courts and a lab with a staggering number of beakers bubbling over open flames.

No Doctor.

Deeper into the TARDIS, the corridors aged. Somewhere between one step and the next, the walls melted from familiar hexagonal plates into ancient brick. Candles perched in wall sconces lit the way with flickering orange light.

“No! Please! Yaz!” The Doctor’s voice was a broken echo coming from the gaping, hungry maw ahead.

Yaz crept forward with one hand on the damp, cold wall. The void swallowed her.

And spit her into a forest.

She stumbled over a tree root, slid on a pile of wet leaves, and caught herself against a trunk.

“Infinite space wrapped in a tiny package,” the Doctor had described the TARDIS as, once upon a time. As she gazed into the shadowed canopy, Yaz realized she’d never really believed it. Wet bark beneath her fingernails solidified the reality of those words.

Something rustled in the underbrush. A choked gasp—the Doctor! Yaz parted a tangled clump of bushes and dove between them. On the other side, a massive tree had fallen and been caught by its neighbor’s lowest branches. It hovered a few feet off the ground, black and hollowed out with age, overgrown with creeping vines and moss. 

Underneath it, close to where the weathered trunk met the ground, the Doctor lay curled up on her side. Unhurt, as far as Yaz could tell. Asleep.

The Doctor gasped again and Yaz rushed to her side. Soft moss tore away under Yaz’s knees and she sank into the cold mud. The Doctor was tucked against a wet log, cheek resting on a smooth stone, peppered with wet leaves. Her muddied coat was wrapped tight around her. If it weren’t for the crease between her eyebrows, Yaz would say she looked impossibly comfortable.

But then the Doctor thrashed, that crease deepening, her mouth opening soundlessly. Yaz leaned forward, heart pumping. What was wrong? She touched the Doctor’s wrist, grit squelching beneath her fingers.

The Doctor stilled, her face smoothing out, the lines of her body relaxing. Yaz froze. 

This was certainly the weirdest place Yaz had found the Doctor napping, but she did look peaceful. When was the last time she’d even slept? Maybe it would be best to leave her. 

Yaz sat back on her heels and released the Doctor’s wrist. 

The frown returned and the Doctor kicked out, heel biting into the log behind her. Yaz touched her again and she settled.

Oh, for the love of—the mud was cold, and the thought of being in contact with it any more than she had to made Yaz wrinkle her nose in disgust. But the Doctor needed the sleep, and this was where she had decided to get it, for some reason. So, taking a deep breath to steel herself, Yaz slid into the crevasse.

A shudder worked its way up her back at the cold, wet ground, the smell of leaves and rotting wood. She squeezed in closer, working one arm underneath the Doctor and the other over her waist. Yaz tucked her nose into the Doctor’s neck and the overwhelming scents of nature receded. The universe consisted of just her and the Doctor, huddled together in the little burrow.

It wasn’t so bad, as the Doctor’s body molded itself more closely to Yaz’s. Warmth pooled between them. A thick bed of leaves softened the ground. The swaying of the trees overhead and the scratching of creatures in the brush formed a pleasant white noise. Yaz’s eyelids drooped.

Time flattened and draped itself over them. 

Eventually, the Doctor stirred. “Yaz? What are you doing here?”

“You were calling out, in your sleep. You said my name. I had a hell of a time finding you. What are you doing here?”

The Doctor tilted her head. “Sleeping.”

Yaz rolled her eyes. “I got that. But why here? There are beds on the TARDIS. A lot of beds.”

“Well, yes.” The Doctor laid her hand over Yaz’s and intertwined their fingers. “Those were all too loud.”

“Loud.”

“Yes.” 

That made no sense, but maybe the Doctor could hear things Yaz couldn’t, especially aboard a telepathic spaceship. “Are you okay? What were you dreaming about?”

The Doctor shifted, turning onto her back and staring at the tree trunk overhead. “Same thing I dream every time I sleep, lately.” She squeezed Yaz’s hand. “Someone or something took you from me.”

“I’m not going anywhere. I won’t leave you.”

“You won’t have any say in it, when you do.” The Doctor turned back to Yaz, reached over, and pulled her closer. “Can we just… stay here for a while?” She kissed Yaz, a plea for more time. 

Though she was wet, and filthy, and a stick was poking her in the hip, Yaz nodded. “Yeah.” She wrapped herself around the Doctor tighter. Held onto now as hard as she could. “We can stay as long as you like.”

The Left Hand Path: Three Years Ago

The Standing Stones of Santa Ana Pueblo

Location: Just above the Red Line off I-25 N/Old New Mexico Route 68 N, Sandoval County north of the Albuquerque Military Exclusion Area.

Before the Crisis, Santa Ana Pueblo was a thriving Tamayame reservation, part of the Greater Albuquerque Metropolitan area, and a major tourist draw in the region owing to its world-class golf courses and club, a well-regarded spa resort, a casino and Michelin-starred restaurant, and a multitude of easily accessible cultural sites and events spread throughout the year. All of that changed on the afternoon of August 13, 2046 when Omnic forces advancing on Albuquerque breached the containment cordon along Route 40 and the US military, massed there to stop them, unleashed experimental high energy weaponry designed for that task.

Once the dust settled, the city of Albuquerque and much of the surrounding area, including the Sandia and Santa Ana Pueblos, was almost completely leveled. In the aftermath, the military cordoned off the ruins of the city inside the Albuquerque Military Exclusion Area, which remains under heavily patrolled Federal military control to this day. Evacuees from the surrounding area were strongly encouraged not to return, with offers to purchase their land at pre-Crisis market value to sweeten the deal. Many accepted, a handful did not, and those that chose to do so returned to a pueblo whose buildings were reduced to rubble and scattered with wreckage -- and something weird that was neither.

The Standing Stones of Santa Ana Pueblo occupy a relatively compact chunk of land on the grounds of what was once Santa Ana Golf Club, shielded from casual view by a stand of cottonwood trees that somehow survived the explosions that leveled the clubhouse and most of the other course structures and did significant damage to the surrounding area. There are nine of them, standing in a geometrically perfect circle, varying in size from from well over six feet to a little over five, perfectly hexagonal in shape, crafted of a dark stone that at least superficially resembles basalt. The inner surface of each stone is densely carved with petroglyphs incised deeply into the rock. The outer surface of each stone is carved with one petroglyph unique to that stone and which cannot be found on any of the others, inside or out. Local experts on Native American petroglyphs continue to research this topic but, as of this writing, none of the petroglyphs that appear on the Standing Stones resemble any glyphs that appear on historical sites in the region.

Nor were the Standing Stones a feature of the area before the Omnic Crisis, as confirmed by surviving photos and video of the course and local residents of the area, including the former owners of the golf club. At some point after the evacuation of Santa Ana Pueblo, the Standing Stones appeared in their current location, unnoticed by anyone despite the heavy military presence and regular patrols of the area, and despite the amount of effort such a project would entail. The stones, though tall and relatively slender, are still estimated to weigh several hundred pounds each -- not something that could be loaded, unloaded, and placed by a single person working by hand alone.

The hundred or so families who make Santa Ana Pueblo their home give the Standing Stones a wide berth, citing weirdly colored lights that appear close to the ground around them and occasionally in the sky above, strange disembodied sounds, and a deep thrumming hum that periodically rises from the area. These phenomena have appeared on official reports from area law enforcement and also on official notices issued from the Albuquerque Exclusion Area’s patrol base. Perhaps coincidentally, perhaps not, most of these phenomena have been observed around the anniversary of the Battle of Albuquerque on August 13th.

If you want to try to catch the weirdness in action, make certain you’re prepared to handle high desert summer weather and get your permissions in order accordingly. The former grounds of Santa Ana Golf Course are private property posted against trespass and the area is periodically patrolled by both the US military and tribal coalition police.

“Tonight’s the night, everybody. August the thirteenth. The anniversary of the Battle of Albuquerque. It’s taken months to get my uncle to trust me enough to go out on perimeter patrol but this is our pay off.” Cody Peshlakai lowered his voice, dramatically, because there was no real danger of being heard, to hype up the audience watching his live HollaGram stream. “Tonight I will investigate the Standing Stones and tonight you will be with me.”

He flashed a grin and a V-for-victory sign into his camera then clipped it to the stabilizer harness strapped around his shoulders and across his chest, one more piece of survival equipment among the molle pouches carrying the rest of his gear, no different from anyone else’s. It sat there, neatly hidden next to his cellphone and the primitive walkie talkie his uncle insisted the security crews carry, through the team muster and meeting at the pueblo ranger station, broadcasting all the while. Nobody objected when he called dibs on one of the spiffy little hybrid hover/wheels ATVs, a good chunk of the all-volunteer patrol crew being old enough to value the superior shock absorption of the service’s Jeeps and trucks. The ATV yielded a much better POV for the viewers as he jetted out across the scrubby desert hardpack on the eastern bank of the Rio Grande toward his goal: the grounds of the former Santa Ana Pueblo Golf Club.

Which was, unfortunately, on the western side of the Rio Grande.

On the way, he passed clusters of habitation: the small, self-contained farmsteads of single families, an artist’s commune, the little solar farm that served the area and its caretaker’s hacienda. He paused at each and exchanged a few words with the residents, radioed a handful of coyote sightings back to base, and continued on, the excitement churning higher and higher in his gut the closer he came to his goal, as his numbers climbed on his viewership monitor.

“So, yeah, that’s my job, stream -- I help keep my community, my friends and neighbors, safe. Sometimes that’s chasing off coyotes that are getting a little too comfortable raiding the compost bins but sometimes...sometimes it’s a lot weirder.” The remains of the old Highway 550 bridge loomed out of the twilight, crumbling concrete pilings jutting out of the shallowest, siltiest part of the river and he pulled to a halt, executing a slow pan to give the stream the best view possible. “On the other side of the river and a few miles west is what’s left of the Santa Ana Pueblo Golf Club. It used to be a world-class course, fancy-ass hotel and casino inclusive, made a lot of jobs and money for the community. All that, of course, came to an end during the Omnic Crisis.”

He revved the motivator, fired up the hoverpods to their highest yield, and skimmed across the surface of the river and up the opposite bank. A vista of devastation, stained in shades of sunset and shadow, spread out before them and the stream chat went absolutely wild. The residential neighborhoods south of 550 had been utterly flattened during the Battle of Albuquerque, hardly a brick left stacked or a wall left standing, blown all-but-flat by some incomprehensibly massive force. That, combined with the occasional blast crater and random scattering of unexploded ordnance, had discouraged resettlement so thoroughly nobody even wanted to risk putting up a solar farm. Wreckage still lay scattered as far as the eye could see and the eye could see quite a distance, even with twenty-plus years of desert scrub overgrowth blurring the harshest edges.

“Nobody really knows what happened here that day -- August thirteenth, the Battle of Albuquerque,” Cody narrated as he kicked the ATV back into motion, navigating carefully down the cracked and pitted remnants of 550 toward his goal. “Just about everybody was evacuated and the ones that stayed behind...well. Let’s just say that, when all was said and done, there wasn’t anyone left to tell the tale.”

The bombed-out, burned-out remnants of the old hotel-casino came into view, its parking lot still filled with the rusting hulks of abandoned vehicles. “The casino and golf course were used as a rallying and evacuation point for the nearby communities on the west bank of the Rio Grande in the days leading up to the battle. The US Army and local militia forces were massing along I-40 -- the Red Line -- and the Air Force and Air National Guard were flying refugees out by helo, the National Guard had commandeered every bus, van, and free personnel carrier they could get their hands on to get people out of harm’s way. This entire area was an absolute hive of activity, you can find video of it all over the internet.”

He paused long enough to link some of his favorites in the chat as he turned off the main road, easing the ATV along something that was once a paved maintenance access point, running roughly parallel with the river. He hit the first scraggly bits of “green,” grass genetically engineered to survive the heat and dry of a high desert summer, a few minutes later and he pulled up onto the flat, opened up his holomap, and pinged his location for the audience. “I’m here -- just south of the lower water trap which is, at this point, completely dry. Our objective is...here.” He touched the copse of cottonwood trees a mile and a half to the north. “The Standing Stones. No one knows how they got here -- they weren’t here before the battle and they weren’t here during the evacuation. But when the recovery teams swept through to see what, if anything, had survived...there they were.”

He gunned the motivator, turned the headlights up to maximum, and muted the call trying to come in from his uncle, likely demanding where the Hell he was. Oh, he was getting fired for this. So very, very fired. But very soon that wouldn’t matter, because after tonight his career was going elsewhere.

The stream picked up every jounce and bounce as he skimmed over ruts and bits of wreckage flung miles from their origins, swerved around scrub becoming less and less scrubby as he went and the wild descendants of decorative plants that had somehow survived despite it all. The cottonwood stand was still the tallest thing around and he slowed as it came into view. “My plan is to set up motion-activated cameras in a perimeter around the Standing Stones and several inside the circle of the Stones, as well, along with a super-sensitive microphone pickup and electromagnetic monitoring equipment. If something happens tonight, we’ll see and hear it.”

He stopped as the ATV’s headlights washed over the trees and struck glints from the Standing Stones themselves, dark stone reflecting darkly -- and more. Cody froze, still straddling his seat. “Oh, fuck -- there’s someone else in there --”

Cody killed the headlights and the motivator and rolled off the ATV into the relative cover of the underbrush in one smoothish and only mildly panicked motion. He even managed to avoid squeaking too much as he whispered, “Chat, did you see that? Did anyone else see that?!”

Dozens of messages bubbled up in the chat as his audience scrolled back and scrutinized every frame for him. For his part, he dug his brand new Panopticon binoculars out of gear bag, clipped them into place on his tactical visor, and tried to get a better look of his own, zooming in on the Standing Stones so closely he could clearly see the petroglyphs incised into their surfaces, even with the last of the light bleeding out of the sky behind them. None of the grainy-green of old school low light optics with these babies, and he scanned the area and slow and careful, looking for some hint of what he saw, something, anything --

A flicker of motion caught his eye, something moving among the Stones, mostly obscured by their mass.

“Fuck.” This...was not a complication he had considered, much less prepared for. This whole area in general and the Standing Stones very much in specific were so far out of bounds that he never imagined encountering another person out here at all much less…

On the night of the anniversary of the battle of Albuquerque.

He had to physically resist the urge to facepalm. “Chat, I...think I know what this is.” He crawled back out of the brush and hunkered down next to the ATV, tried to get a better angle on the inside of the circle. “You know how every year there’s a remembrance ceremony at the big Crisis Memorial up in Santa Fe? Well...what if I told you that some people come down to the pueblo for their own private remembrances, too? It’s the anniversary, after all. Let me see if --”

A shriek of audio distortion drilled his ear with the enthusiasm of an icepick straight to the brain and it was all he could do not to howl as he clawed his audio pickup out. “Holy fuck, what was that?”

The chat, in the corner of the heads-up display on his visor, was losing its entire fucking mind -- whatever it was, they had heard it, too, and --

A second pulse of sound, deep and resonant, punched him in the chest hard enough to make both his heart and breathing stutter, and the chat went absolutely apeshit again as it fed through to them, as well.

“You know what, Chat,” Cody said, as soon as he got enough breath back to speak, “I think I’m going to take your advice and get the Hell --”

Golden light blossomed inside the circle of the Standing Stones -- for an instant, to his eyes, it looked as though the petroglyphs themselves were lighting up, searing their patterns into his retinas with a single unwary glance. He reeled back and looked away as he clawed both the tac visor and the binoculars off his face, blinking afterimages out of his vision, the light washing out of the stone circle, over him, over everything, and --

Calm flowed over him, over him and through him, a wave of perfect serenity that stole away all his fear between one breath and the next, left him wobbling on legs made of rubber, legs that folded up underneath him and left him sprawled on his back, eyes and camera both pointed at the swiftly darkening sky, hazed in golden light. He could hear the pinging of his stream’s chat freaking out a few physical inches and a couple thousand conceptual realities away, but couldn’t bring himself to care. That sweet golden light was all he knew and that majestic bone-deep music, and he allowed himself to drift away on it, blinking away like a pinched-out candle between one breath and the next.

It was some time later that the rescue team found him, sprawled out next to the ATV, boneless, blissed out and drooling. But not, as they feared, dead.

“I told you this little moron was up to something,” Julia Tso nudged him in the ribs with the tip of one hiking boot. “He’s been streaming crap on HollaGram for months, Joseph.”

“Yeah, I know.” Joseph Peshlakai sighed and signaled the medical evac team to come in from the road. “Keep an eye on him until they get here, yeah?”

Julia rolled her eyes but nodded and Joseph crossed the remaining distance to the Standing Stones, where a golden light still pulsed among them, within them, the petroglyphs alight. He stopped outside, cleared his throat, and said, “Thank you for not killing him, Wanderer. He’s an idiot but he’s my kid brother’s favorite child.”

Youth and folly are not offenses punishable by death, my old friend. The voice echoed in his mind, warm and amused, but not less awesome because of it. Thank you, as always, for watching over them in my absence.

“My honor, Wanderer. I’m honestly a little surprised to see you this soon. It’s only been, what, five years?” Five years to the day, Joseph thought but did not say.

Joseph took a deep, steadying breath and nodded. “Things have been...a little stranger than usual, I will admit. It will be good to have you back, even if only for a time.”

The golden light blinked out, and Joseph knew he was alone. The Stones faded more slowly at his back, as he walked back down the shallow rise to his lieutenant and his idiot nephew and the knowledge growing in his mind that things were going to get worse before they got better.
