Liam Lawson on F1 accessibility and Ollie Bearman:
“I would say maybe, it’s becoming more clear-it’s hard because obviously I don’t wanna just speak for myself but just using Ollie [Bearman] as an example-how potentially accessible formula 1 is for the younger sort of generation and us trying to step into it. I think in my experience it’s not so much driving the car but everything else that comes with Formula 1-the pressure, the media side of it the atmosphere-it’s very very different to what anything else we’ve raced. But the driver part of it sort of how accessible it is. I think from the simulator work and preparation that we do that someone like Ollie is able to jump into the car and be on the pace and do such a good job”
THIS is it!! This is what we’re saying! Liam and Ollie both performed superbly when given the opportunity to do so. It’s clear that the F1 car is manageable for someone making a quick jump from F2 or older F1 cars. When-in my experience-the reason teams have been hesitant maybe to bring in younger talent like Liam and Ollie is cause of the difference in the car. Liam and Ollie have both said that’s not true and they both did quite well through several tough races in Liam’s case like Singapore and Qatar.
It’s for reasons like what Liam says that we need to either push out some of the guys who aren’t performing at their level (*cough* Ricciardo *cough*) or open up the sport to more teams! If Andretti had gotten their bid accepted, Liam Lawson might not have to wait around for DR to get his head out of Chr*stian Horners ass and retire and he could have a seat for 2025. Cause until that happens, and until other teams make moves to push out their older competitors. Liam (and Ollie, sort of) can’t join F1.
And another problem this raises, is that either of them could have a seat next year. If teams weren’t so scared of missing out on the next Max Verstappen.
Toto Wolff practically has the seat reserved for Kimi Antonelli and he will do whatever it takes to either get it to him in 2025, or blow off that year to wait for Kimi in 2026. Meaning that Liam and Ollie would be left on their asses if either if them signed to Merc. And this isn’t hate to Kimi! This is simply a criticism of the teams only taking younger talent when they’re considered prodigious.
If they signed to a lower grid team like Haas-who we know are in tentative talks with Ollie-or Sauber or Alpine then they will underperform to their potential because the car they drive is shitty but they’ll be the ones blamed for it due to “lack of experience” and teams can continue to make the claim that the F2 to F1 jump is too big and the cycle repeats perpetually until it’s just not worth it and we the fans lose out on potential great talent. Even though drivers who have been in the sport for years can underperform in the same car and it’s fine!
It doesn’t make sense, truly, for them to not trust younger talent when Zak Brown and Mclaren have signed the youngest pairing on the grid, who after updates last year to the car, were pretty consistent with placing in the points and earned them several podiums.
Also, look at how much good the 2019 rookies ended up being for the sport. 3 childhood friends entered into F1, there were highs, lows, etc they each got their shot to prove themselves and now. One is working to rebuild a historic team, one is outperforming a 7 time champion (again no hate just observation) and one is considered to be apart of the team that can take the fight to RedBull and Ferrari
It just doesn’t make sense when young drivers get passed up even when they prove themselves in favor of relying on middling drivers who’s time in the sun have kind of passed on.
Anyway, I hope Liam and Ollie get a seat next year. I hope Kimi Antonelli does what’s best for him as a kid rather than what is best for his career. I hope Daniel Ricciardo gets kicked out mid season. And I hope the next time a team comes in trying to join F1, they can actually do it

Scary Crashes (Katie McCabe x Reader)
Tumblr media
2 fics in 1 day I'm literally so awesome. Also, sorry for the shit title I couldn't think of anything else sooo, just ignore that bit. Remember, any feedback good or bad is welcomed! As always, have fun reading!
Word Count: 1K (Kinda short but who cares)
“This is gonna be so much fun!” Katie exclaims as she walks alongside you in the paddock. You chuckle at her excitement.
“Yeah, it’s going to be great babe,” you say before stopping to take some photos with fans. You were a driver with Ferrari and while it had been a tough season, you were confident heading into Silverstone this weekend. What made it even better is that Katie, your girlfriend, was attending. She had come to a couple of races, but it always made you feel better to have her there.
The weekend had been tough, free practice had been okay and you were out-qualified by your teammate, Charles. Katie watched excitedly from the garage as the race got underway. The race had been terrible, Ferrari in complete Ferrari style had fucked up your strategy,
“No! Guys, we can’t keep doing this. Fuck! Mate, this has gone from bad to an absolute shithole of a race,” you say over the radio.
As it gets closer and closer to the chequered flag, you try your very best to make some places back up. After your pit stop you came out P13, but you were able to crawl back up to P8. You tried multiple times to get past Pierre Gasly’s Alpine in P7 but to no avail. You were starting to get frustrated,
“He’s driving a bit dangerously, no? Did you see him do the double move on the straight?”
“Yep, we saw it. Just keep focused Y/N, you’ll get him,” your engineer says back to you.
On the next lap, you get a good exit out of Woodcote and use the slipstream to your advantage as you guys head into Copse. Gasly defends the inside so, you decide to try around the outside. Katie holds her breath as she watches on the TV. One second you’re thinking you’ve got him on the outside, the next you’re spinning around as gravel spills into the cockpit. At first, you think you’ve just span out and that you’re probably beached in the gravel trap. That is until you smash into the tyre barrier at over 200km/h. All the air gets pressed out of your lungs when you hit the wall with over 50G’s. Immediately after you hit, you black out.
Everyone inside the Ferrari garage is scrambling, trying to see if you’re okay or not. Your engineer is getting no response over the radio. All the cameras on the car had been broken. Katie was full-on panicking. As the team tried to see if you were okay, Katie couldn’t help but fear for the worst, especially when the ambulance had to come.
You wake up when someone starts to shake your shoulders. Your eyes adjust to the light and when you look up you see a marshal standing over you asking if you’re okay. You give him a nod and thumbs up, before switching on the radio,
“You okay? Y/N, are you okay?” The engineer keeps repeating.
“Yeah, I’m okay. Ahhhhh fuck, everything kinda hurts though,” you answer.
“Yeah, just stay where you are, marshals are coming and so are some paramedics,”
“Okay, copy,”
It takes a couple of minutes for the marshals to get you out, but when they do you are met with thunderous applause from the crowds. Waving a hand to let them know you’re okay, Katie breathes a sigh of relief. She gets informed by your assistant that you are heading to the hospital for a check-up because it was quite the impact. Katie drives to the hospital as quickly as possible. She knows you’re more or less okay considering you were able to walk out of the car, but she needed to see you with her own eyes. The Irish woman asks the receptionist where you are quite urgently, maybe a little rudely, but she’s Katie McCabe what do you expect from her? When she’s shown to your room she’s informed that you are sleeping. So, she quietly tip-toes into the room and sees you laying there with a couple of machines hooked up to you. Deciding you should keep sleeping, she goes and asks the doctor about how you are. The doctor says that for the most part, you’re okay, your only injury being bruised ribs. He tells her that you're only going to be hooked up to the oxygen machine for a little bit, they just didn’t want to take any chances.
It’s a couple hours before you wake up and when you do you’re met with your girlfriend looking anxious. She has no idea you’re awake yet, so you slowly reach out for her hand and slip her fingers in between yours. Her head jerks up.
“Oh my God, Y/N. Jesus Christ you had me so scared there,” she says quickly. You point in the direction of the door, silently asking for her to go get the doctor so he could take the oxygen mask off. “Oh yeah, right of course. I’ll go get him.”
The doctor does a quick check-up on you before ultimately deciding that you were good to go. He releases you from the hospital, much to your happiness and Katie’s worry. When you guys get back to the hotel, Katie carries all your bags inside, even though you did offer multiple times. All night, Katie won’t let you do anything. Water? Brings multiple glasses of it. Hungry? Don’t worry, she’s got a plate stacked sky-high with food. In pain? She’ll force multiple painkillers down your throat. Some might find it overbearing, but you on the other hand found it endearing. Katie usually acted tough, but it was in moments like these that she shows just how caring and thoughtful she can be.
“Are you good? Do you need anything else?” Katie asks.
“Nah, babe. I think I’m all good. Thank you for everything today,” you say gratefully.
“Of course, you scared me there Y/N,” she says the last part quietly. You drag her beside you on the bed.
“Yeah, sorry about that,” you say scratching the back of your neck.
“Never again Y/N, never again,” she says sternly. She grins at you before kissing you.
As you fall asleep you can’t believe how lucky you are to have a girlfriend as awesome as yours.

also like, as I always say I love the carland0 and dand0 content SO much like it got me into f1blr and I rewatch some of those every week to make me smile <3
but whenever Lando was with those guys - or tbh with any driver older than him - there's always this reverting to baby brother thing where he lets the older guy answer everything more seriously or in detail and then Lando just pipes in w something funny or cute or getting flustered and everyone being like oh that's classic Lando etc etc. and it's always great content lbr!
but him and Oscar being on that freakish wavelength together and automatically sharing responsibilities based on individual strength to do w knowledge/skill (and Lando's mood that day) means we actually get to see Lando's competence and knowledge way more than we used to. bc it's always been there as much as the other guys it's just the ~divergence~ brain making certain environments or certain pressures shutting parts of his brain (and literally do I relate to that).
and not to get too deep but it parallels the fact that when Oscar showed up and everyone was saying how he was Lando's rookie and his protégé etc it threw Lando for a while bc openly said he didn't feel comfortable being in that role to someone else/not having someone older and more experienced to lean on. which I think if Oscar had actually needed that himself it would've not worked at all well - fortunately Zak and Andrea both knew enough of Oscar to know that wouldn't be the case.
BUT !! Oscar knowing cough so much about Lando before joining McLaren meant that even though he rly never needed Lando to be in that guidance/leader role for him, he picked up on Lando genuinely wanting to try and like - that's where the wavelength was established. bc Oscar did put himself in the role of following what Lando chooses and learning Lando's preferences and behaviors which in turn ! fulfilled Lando wanting to do the team and himself proud and be there for Oscar as basically the existing face of McLaren and the popular driver who was able to win over fans and media to Oscar who were not only reluctant to like Oscar at the time, they were actively rooting for his downfall and reveling in McLaren's tough start to 2023. because Lando pushed for such solidarity and included Oscar so much in his social media back then, Oscar returned the favor by learning and copying from Lando how to engage w media and fans on the F1 level of scrutiny. and because Oscar went so unusually quiet and observant with Lando compared to Oscar with the guys in F3 and F2, Lando kept complimenting how "calm" Oscar was and how it was rubbing off on him.
like I know there's the rpf of it all but it's why I feel like we all latch on so hard with landoscar as it exists just in reality bc there's been the opposite of bromance and convenience for them that their dynamics w other drivers have had (similar personalities, interests, being invested in PR - or not, in Oscar's case) and they also didn't even have fans rooting for them to be friends or even be great teammates bc of Alpine drama and being bitter about Daniel AND add to the fact that Lando himself was resistant to the idea of being the older guy. yet despite having that uphill battle and their personalities in superficial/social ways being diametrically opposed, they're the teammates that are known for their freakish mind-reading/twinning and they naturally form to the same car requirements and preferences and after just one season together have the narrowest margins between them on track. and Lando was truly one foot out the door at points last season and while most of him being swayed was loyalty to McLaren, I think if Oscar had been just as competitive as he is BUT wasn't as perfectly matched for Lando as he is then... idk drivers have left teams that felt like 'home' for less reason than that !!
idk Lando twice catching himself referring to Oscar as if they've been teammates for years instead of barely even a season and a half and Oscar having this metamorphosis that's been visible on camera based on using Lando as his pole star for coping with the leap from F2 success->languishing at Alpine->F1 in a rollercoaster season for McLaren. to now watching them in all their content easily swapping duties with unspoken agreement and picking up the middle of each other's thoughts seamlessly (and Wired deciding to have both of them do it instead of just one like usual) and Lando looking to Oscar every time he forgets a word bc Oscar will have it for him immediately. they sit back together and enjoy watching every other team and driver go through chaos bc they've both committed to their team already and don't have to worry about all that for a good while.
sure a lot of us would prefer if they had the shared outside hobby to ensure hanging out even when they're one day no longer teammates but askgsajfglafg honestly for me that's a future concern that idc about !! there's something so we didn't just become teammates against the odds we became one of the best teammate pairings against the odds about them that's compelling in a sports/competition sense but also in the way they hold something fairly special between them as drivers - and undeniably at least in part as people - and them not choosing to advertise for fans when they travel together or hang out or have their own little debriefs and decompresses together - like them being so proud of their new privacy door to their drivers rooms and emphasizing how it's their own place to be private private and away from everyone (even Jon and Kim!) but it's so shared between them that Oscar still hears all of Lando's music
it's such a massive, conscious commitment to each other in a career that is basically most of their lives every year and it's just so !!!! all on it's own as it is for me <3<3

The traffic of getting out of the campus was tough, the occasional fan coming up to the car to either take videos of it for social media or to interact with both you, Lewis or the other drivers. Having the top down for the fans to have better access to the both of you resulted in paparazzi at the gate of the university, trying to grab pictures of you mainly.
“Babe look! They’re calling it the Paddock Grad party.” You chuckled as you chuckled at the tweets you were scrolling through as you found out that you were trending on the app. The wind wasn’t too harsh on your faces as he cruised down the streets, constantly congratulating you and doing an amazing job at distracting you from the fact that the rest of the grid that attended your graduation had driven past you.
Reaching the infamous Hidden Hills gates, you were greeted with balloons from the guards, already putting the biggest smile on your face. Driving towards your LA home, you noticed all the super cars, hyper cars and luxury vehicles leading up to your driveway with each car having a gold balloon strapped around the mirror. You were absolutely stunned by everything you were taking in and Lewis looked at you as if you hung up all the stars in the night sky, extremely proud of your achievements.
With him helping you out of the car, you noticed the white rose petals scattered around the front yard and the music blaring from your backyard. The thought of all your favourite people coming together to celebrate your newest achievement was bringing tears of joy to your eyes, refusing to cry and ruining your lashes. Walking into your home, you noticed the incredibly large table of gifts as you walked into your foyer and Lewis just following behind you as you marvelled at everything in your home.
“Y/n,” He called out as you were a few feet away from the door leading to your backyard. Looking back at your husband, you held his hand. “Don’t you want to change your shoes?” He asked, noticing your discomfort from your heels after the graduation ceremony had ended. You nodded with the most love sick smile on your face as he brought out your favourite Gucci platform sandals from behind his back. He let out a little giggle at the look on your face and got on his knees to undo your shoes for you. Sighing of relief as your bare feet hit the cool ground, you slipped your feet into the sandals, noticing the height change between you and Lewis as he was taller than you. He placed a kiss on your forehead then your lips, repeatedly kissing your lips until your giggle stopped him.
As you walked into the kitchen which had access to the patio door, you noticed all the food and dessert beautifully decorated with white and gold, the one thing catching your attention the most was the doughnut stand in the middle of your island. You gasped and immediately went for the stand, grabbing a white chocolate doughnut that wrote ‘congratulations, y/n!’. You split it into two pieces and offered to Lewis knowing he would definitely decline it but he surprised you by taking the other half. “What? I can’t say no to a celebration.” He winked at you as he took a bite out of it.
Almost forgetting about the party he quite literally planned to happen in his backyard, he held your hand once again and led you to the party outside with all the guests waiting for you. As he opened the door, the sounds of Kaytranada were heard and people talking as they turned their attention to the door you were walking out from. The cheers started as you fully walked into the yard with Lewis squeezing your hand and letting it go, stepping to the side to let people celebrate you.
The first person to approach you was your mother, embracing you in a loving hug as tears threatened to fall. The next being your younger sister, trying her hardest to stay cool as she looked at you so proudly. Your immediate family had come up to congratulate you before letting your friends celebrate you.
After receiving hugs and congratulatory messages from everyone, taking many photos from the Photo Booth that was rented and a little bit of dancing, it was soon time to eat as the sun was setting beautifully as the hues of pink and orange hit your skin. Placing your graduation cap on the hook of your chair, you faced everyone as you sat at the head of the table. During your meal, you decided to make a speech to say thank you to everyone.
“Hey everyone,” You greeted as all eyes turned to you when you stood up. “Um, sorry for interrupting your eating. Just wanted to say a speech to you guys.” You began and you heard Daniel Ric’s iconic ‘Ki ki’ noises that you’ve had the honour of hearing live many times. “Thank you Daniel for that, gratefully appreciated.” You smiled, causing the whole table to laugh.
“I would like to start off by saying thank you, truly. To my family for supporting me through everything, to myself for getting these degrees, to my friends that i have met along the way and to my loving husband for sticking with me and loving me.” You expressed, seeing smiles from everyone around you. “I remember leaving home, just graduated with my undergrad and i wanted to spoil myself and I took a solo trip to the Monaco gp with an extremely limited budget and i didn’t know what i was going to eat for that week but my younger delusional self knew that I wasn’t going to struggle because a driver will see me on the stand and instantly fall for me and well, that’s exactly what happened except now I’m the designated paddock mom.” You chuckled, reminiscing on that life changing week.
“Years later, I’m married to the love of my life with my master’s degree on lock, just hitting the millionaire status from my career and the best people by my side supporting me through and through. I truly love all of you so much and lemme stop before i ruin this makeup.” You laughed, grabbing a serviette and dabbing your eyes before tears fell.
The night had carried on beautifully as your friends had made speeches about how it was when you’d complain about your work load to them or the iconic moments you’d take your homework along with you to a few races. Having your favourite desserts and dancing with your friends until late had made you feel happy about everything that you’ve accomplished for yourself.

f1 tag game!!! thanks eve @bright-and-burning <33
Who is your favorite driver?: Charles, by a fairly large margin. him!!
Do you have other favorite drivers?: I am fond of most of the grid to varying degrees, as is probably obvious from my blog! but top-tier are Alex, Yuki, Max, Oscar, Liam
Who is your least favorite driver?: I would prefer not to name names! (but I have named names before lol)
Do you pull for drivers or do you like teams as well?: I mostly root for drivers. It's probably partially a consequence of coming to the sport through rpf, and also I feel icky about the teams as corporations. And yet (!) I do find the narratives compelling
If you like teams, what team do you pull for?: I am fond of Williams (although a lot less fond of James Vowles for what he's done to Logan recently); Ferrari and I are in a love-hate relationship
How long have you been into F1?: The year anniversary of the inciting incident is in three days!!
What got you into F1?: ro @oscarpiastriwdc had started reading f1 fic on a whim bc a podcast we both like had mentioned it and we'd talked about how we'd both picked up a little bit of knowledge from Being Online; I was having a tough day and they sent me the objects in mirror series by val @drivestraight and I was totally hooked. I started watching/reading everything I could get my hands on about the sport and then it was Monaco the weekend of my birthday and I discovered that I did, indeed love to watch the cars go vroom
Do you enjoy Fanfic/RPF?: alsdfj;akj answered by the "what got you into f1 question" but yes, I both read and write (allegedly, sometimes) f1 rpf
How do you view new fans?: I am a new fan! and I got in via rpf so I have not a single moral superiority leg to stand on. I feel like this question is aimed at "DTS fans"? And while I haven't actually watched it I don't think there's any reason that people who got into F1 that way are any way "lesser" or "fake" in terms of the way they view the sport
If you could take over as team principal for any team, who would it be and why?: oooof. I....do not think I would be good at that job. I am not terribly organized, for one. I'm going to say Alpine, just for a few days, because I don't think I could make Worse and I am a terrible gossip and want to know whether Pierre and Esteban are at each other's throats behind the scenes
Are your friends and family into F1 as well?: Well, ro is my irl* (met them at a rainbow alliance meeting on the second day of freshman orientation — we both introduced ourselves as "allies" lollll). A couple of other friends from college and an old friend from 1D fandom times are also into F1 independently, and my dad has started really following along since I got sucked in (he is very sweet).
*tried to think of a noun to go after irl...friend doesn't really cover it
Are you open to talking to other fans/making friends?: Yes!! I love friends!! I'm a little bit shy about messaging people but I love love to talk <33
no pressure tags: @omigodyall @oscarpiastriwdc @drivestraight @piastrisms @mcl38 @vegasgrandprix @blorbocedes @kazoologist

CHARLES LECLERC WINS IN MONACOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
oh my god. ive been vibrating out of my skin this whole fucking week to try and not talk about this fuckass race because of the monaco curse, and let me just say.
WHAT FUCKING CURSE!! ITS DEAD BABY! WE BURIED IT
ok excitement aside, here's the race (and weekend) roundup from me
monaco loved him back. monaco loved him back!!!! oh my god
aside from the fact im a fan, leclerc came in this weekend locked in, dunked six tenths to a full scond on his teammate (and everyone else!!) in free practice, and just looked utterly assured the entire time. quali he was almost as dominant, with a two tenths gap to piastri, and then managed his tyres and laptimes brilliantly to back up the pack and prevent norris' pit window from opening. boring race, but great result.
guys. polar bear in arlington texas, and carlos sainz was (somewhat) of a team player today. his luck was INSANE on that restart though. idk how one man has so much luck???? LIKE???
perez, why does europe hate you. also kmag should have gotten penalty points and a race ban for that, probably. it was totally unnecessary and very scary to watch. glad checo's ok.
alpines fighting, fork found in kitchen, jfc. that was ocon's fault, and he's apologised for it, so... hm
GASLY!! point!!
yoints! plural!
alex albon points!! PLURAL! williams are officially on the board
verstappen pitting and then immediately getting on george russells asscheeks, so real!
how the fuck did george russell do 78 laps on mediums. what th fuck
haas have had possibly the worst weekend a team can have.
nothing much to say about mclaren, lando or oscar. managed well on the hards to the end, which is always a tough order.
i have no words for that win. third time lucky, baby.
god. formula one is BACK BABY

Mick’s Diary: 2024 Plans, Final Races of the Season & More
Time for one final check-in of the 2023 Formula One season. Here’s the last chapter of Mick’s Diary for this year. Catching up with our Reserve Driver, Mick Schumacher, to hear all about the final races of the season, what he made of Las Vegas and his plans for the winter. We also hear from him on his 2024 plans now that they’ve been officially announced. Hi everyone. It’s been a busy couple of weeks, so there’s plenty to update you on for my last diary of the 2023 season. It’s been a very long season for everybody, and we’re going to have a longer one next year. Everyone is bracing themselves for it. On the other hand, it’s good to know we’ve completed the year with a successful learning path and securing P2 in the Constructors’ Championship. I’ve also learned a lot over the season and my knowledge base. Every time I went in the car I felt like I did take steps forward. Obviously the simulator work helped with the development of the W14, so I’m excited to see what next year holds. All of the races at the end of the year have been flyaways, so I’ve not been on the race support like I am for the Europeans. It’s a very different approach to the weekend, as for flyaways I am there from Thursday onwards so I am much more involved on the ground, but for most of the Europeans I’m in the simulator and only get to the track on Saturday. But both have their charm and have their individual way of learning and taking what’s important from the weekend. We’ve finished the season with an intense run of races. You can never really combat all the travel and the time zones; you just have to survive it, really. Probably one of the most difficult parts of F1 is switching time zones. Vegas was a tough cookie. I unfortunately got sick when I arrived there and I didn’t really recover until the end of the weekend. Luckily everything’s all good, but from what I saw of Vegas the schedule was quite tough, but there were lots of positives and I’d never been to Vegas before, so it was an interesting experience. As a team, we win and lose together and when things are difficult you definitely feel that. All I want to do is help the team to success and we all worked very hard to try and get the car back up to speed. Especially now with the W15 already in the works, we all are 100% focused on trying to have a successful 2024. It’s a great opportunity to stay with the team for next year as the Reserve Driver and keep on learning, keep building on what we’ve achieved this year. I think we’re all very keen to get started and on track with the W15, so it will be very nice to be part of that process. I can also continue to build on all the relationships with the team. It’s been good to spend so much time with everyone and get to know, also, the people who have been here when my dad was. It’s a very special team and a very special bond that they have. I’m also really excited to be back racing in the World Endurance Championship with Alpine. I’m a racer, I always was a racer, so I’ll be racing next year and that’s what I do best. Not racing this year was tough, so I’m just really looking forward to being on the road and fighting. In between we have a bit of a break, so I’ll be recharging my batteries; get ready for racing next year and try to build on what we’ve done in 2023. I wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who’s read these diary entries through the year, but most importantly thanks to all the fans for sticking with me. It’s been a tough year and we never give up. We always try to give our best. Thank you for being there every step of the way, and I’m excited for what next year holds. Believe me, I’m still working hard on also the step to hopefully being back in F1.

And for taking the time to read my posts as well, when I wax poetic about Esteban it certainly isn't a tiny post, it's usually a novel sdlfkjsdf.
IT WARMS MY HEART TO BRING ANOTHER ESTIE FAN ON BOARD, welcome in!! It's a tough fight out there against the haters, but it's a damn good place to be lemme tell you.
(And don't let people tell you that you can't love both Pierre and Esteban at the same time. You can. It's not a myth. Many of us exist. Be free, be you, be true).

I'm looking at the Säker harness system and, other than price, I like what the base model has to offer but was curious to see your thoughts on the packs. It's hard to find good pictures on the site as it appears they are still in the preorder stage but I am still curious on your thoughts!
Frankly I think the price is ridiculous for what it is. You can get excellent quality gear for much less money.
I also have a couple of gripes. They claim they couldn't find anything tough enough for their dog. I feel like this means they were not looking into actual hiking, tracking, sport dog, outdoor dog gear brands because I have personally never had a durability issue with any of my gear from Howling Dog Alaska, Non-stop, Alpine Outfitters, Hurtta, Ruffwear, or Wolfpacks, amongst others. Many actual working dogs, not weekend warrior dogs use these brands with success.
From a design standpoint I personally would not put this harness on my dogs. It has a very wide chest plate which means there is a higher likelihood of rub occurring. The chest plate also comes up very high on the neck, rather than sitting on the breastbone like most correctly fitted y-front harnesses. Again, this means that any extra pull on the harness the dog would have the neck of the chest plate in their trachea. I also do not like that this type of design includes a front clip, this will encourage users to use this harness as a no-pull and it is not ergonomically set up to work this way. Not a fan.
Hate the packs. Hate them. High quality packs, such as the Wolfpacks ones I use, are made of Cordura which is incredibly tough. Ruffwear and Non-stop's materials are similarly tough, 420 denier nylon ripstop for Ruffwear, Ripstop as well for Non-stop, and the packs from these brands fit appropriately. the Saker Ascension pack uses a coated 840D Oxford weave nylon. While it's denier is higher (which is a toughness level), its lack of ripstop gives me huge pause as packs are often rubbing against underbrush, twigs etc. I would much prefer to see a ripstop and especially cordura used for the paniers of a pack vs oxford nylon which, despite its higher denier, will likely tear more easily. Let's break down why I don't like the pack from a placement standpoint:
Tumblr media
1.) The chest plate sucks (describe in above paragraphs). I don't care if it's a crash tested harness. Sometimes the purpose of gear (like being a crash tested car harness) is not the best design across all disciplines and this is the case here.
2.) Paniers (the bag part) has awful placement from a packing perspective. Firs the straps that attach the pack to the harness and make it modular hold the harness far too low on the dog's body (or perhaps this model was not fitted appropriately? Red flag from any dog gear brand is website photos with shitty fit imo). Secondly the bag is not far enough forward. The pack should be sitting as close to the front of the dog as possible, which would be possible if this was a free pack, or a modular pack such as the Ruffwear Palisades that is a pack first and harness second. Please see the photo below from the Ruffwear website of the Palisades. Packs fit appropriately on the models AND the pack is designed for actually carrying weight correctly on the dog.
Tumblr media
You can also see in the below photo of the newest version of the Palisades (above picture is of the older version). How the pack can be modular, but doesn't rely on clips and straps to keep the pack correctly leveled. The vest like design of the Palisades is what keeps it from sitting too low and being unbalanced on the dog:
Tumblr media
I'll also add that if you have a pack that does not have a built in harness you can easily take the pack off your dog at any time (Packs like these would be, for example, the ones from Wolfpacks or Non-stop).
The one item from Saker I appreciate is the Rescue Sling, because this is an important piece of equipment, however I have issues with this design as well (especially the fact that it is built to be modular with the harness like???). While the Airlift by Fido Pro is more expensive, i like that it 1.) has bright colors which is preferable in an emergency situation and 2.) supports the dog's entire body and torso in the sling itself (as do literally any other rescue harness I've seen aside from Saker...) The one from Saker does not do this and relies on their harness design to keep the dog lifted which in an emergency situation just. Nope.
What this company comes down to for me is somebody THINKS there is a gap in a market where there is not a gap and person also does not realize that despite their claim that "this will soon be the Arc'teryx and Patagonia for dogs" that that gear? Already exists and it doesn't NEED to be modular to be the top tier of its product. The Wolfpacks dog packs are not a modular piece, but are generally, amongst packing folks in North America, considered the best equipment you can purchase for packing and they've been doing the same excellent pack designs since the 1980s.

Alonso reveals what 'outstanding' Stroll needs to do to be 'fighting for the top 5'
Fernando Alonso has heaped praise on his current Aston Martin team mate Lance Stroll, lauding the at times “outstanding” performances of the Canadian. The Spanish star also revealed what he feels Stroll needs to do join him in the fight for podiums on a consistent basis. Stroll endured a tricky start to the year, fracturing his wrists in a pre-season cycling accident that was still affecting him as he lined up on the grid for the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix. That has doubtless played a part in Stroll failing to hit the highs of his two-time champion team mate in an AMR23 machine that’s one of the strongest cars in the field. PADDOCK INSIDER: How Lance Stroll went from bike crash to F1 paddock return in just 12 days Alonso has now taken six podiums and 117 points this year, compared to Stroll’s 37 points and best finish of P4. And speaking ahead of that sixth podium in Montreal, Alonso was asked what Stroll needed to do “to improve” and become a “star in the sport”. “I know Lance from 2012 – actually, I met him here [in Montreal] in one of the Ferrari events, when he was in the [Ferrari Driver] Academy,” said Alonso, who took P2 in Montreal as Stroll recovered from P16 to P9 at the flag. “I think Lance is showing the speed in the car, the commitment. We saw at the beginning of the year as well, racing with a broken hand and things like that; you only see [this] when you really have passion for something that you're doing.” This feature is currently not available because you need to provide consent to functional cookies. Please update your cookie preferences 2023 Canadian Grand Prix: Norris and Ocon, and Stroll and Bottas battle to the finish line Alonso went on to praise the “sparks of Lance” that F1 fans have witnessed over the years, the Canadian having become the second-youngest ever podium finisher at the 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix – before claiming two more rostrums in 2020 – as well as scoring a maiden pole position in tough conditions at the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix. “I think we saw many times in the past sparks of Lance, in wet qualifying, in races, at the starts, Lap 1 performance, these kinds of things that are outstanding," said Alonso. READ MORE: Verstappen says he ‘never imagined’ winning 41 Grands Prix after equalling Senna’s victory tally in Montreal “And then, some other weekends that the result was not coming, or you get in a bad loop in qualifying, so something like that, and then the weekend is a little bit compromised. “I think, for him, the most important thing now is to get the consistency, weekend after weekend... That consistency is going to be the next step in his career, to be constantly fighting for the top five and then at the end of the year, you see the amount of points that you gain when you get all the weekends right. Alonso has podiumed six times in eight races in 2023 – the second-highest tally of any driver, behind Max Verstappen – with Stroll yet to make the rostrum “But as I said,” Alonso concluded, “with the motivation, the commitment that he has, and the team that Aston Martin is building now, I think it's a matter of time that this will come.” TREMAYNE: Albon’s Canada drive had me wondering how he’d be doing in the second RB19 if Red Bull had kept him Aston Martin currently sit P3 in the constructors’ standings, just 13 points adrift of rivals Mercedes – with Red Bull a full 154 points in front of the (black-liveried) Silver Arrows. 1 Red Bull Racing 321 2 Mercedes 167 3 Aston Martin 154 4 Ferrari 122 5 Alpine 44 6 McLaren 17 7 Alfa Romeo 9 8 Haas F1 Team 8 9 Williams 7 10 AlphaTauri 2 via Formula 1 News https://www.formula1.com

ROUND 1 - BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX!
Hi, Its the first race of the year and this is always a exciting part of F1! We get to see all the new cars in action, and see how they work in a race! Lets talk about it.
The Bahrain GP 2023 was eventfull, intersting and a sad day for the ferrari's. Starting with the Ferrari's it was a tough one! Charles stopped the car due to engine faliure, which was a sad time for us ferrari fans, let me tell you i was going through it! On the other hand we have Oscar Piastri who is one of the 3 rookies for this season and is driving for McLaren, had a electrical faliure so they sadly have to retire him a couple laps in. It's such a shame to see a driver with so much potential have a car and a race that didnt work:(. Last but not least, Estie Bestie (also Esteban Ocon!) where Alpine had to retire him from the race due to so many penalties! Ocon had 3 penalties where to of them were 5 seconds and one on 10 seconds. I can understand why they retired him since there may have been no point in keeping him in, since he probably wouldt have entered the points anyway due to the amout of penalties:(
Its was a race that the Redbull Enjoyers had fun with but, as a ferrari fan i must say it was a though one, But of course always happy to see Carlos so close to the podium. He fought so well, and better luck to the Ferrari drivers!!
Bye!

Note
And there goes season 6 there is so much to get through so strap in. Sorry this is so late my job has giving me the most stressful hours this week.
Ferrari got a new team principal, aww no more Binotto(is it me or does he look a little like Jack Antonoff lol). Man Ferrari really is that F1 team and there fans go wild so they will always have that status weather they win or lose. They also really know how to keep there drivers in check.
Daniel getting back on the track, it’s really where he belongs. That injury for him was bad and on the hand to so horrible for him. I’m surprised that not many drivers suffer injuries considering how crazy some of the crashes can be. Just wonderful to see him doing what he was born to do. Nice to see that Horner truly cares about him and still sees potential in him.
Otmar really needed to stop being so soft when it comes to discipline those drivers but it was sad the way Alpine let him go. The drivers totally don’t have to be friends but they need to a least have some respect for each other. Taking accountability for ur actions cause in the end it’s gonna hurt the team and yourselves. Being competitive is a good thing but u got to keep ur ego in check so it doesn’t do more damage than necessary.
Tough go for Lewis this season not having the car he needs to get the 8 championship so he can be forever known as the best driver Formula 1 has ever seen. If leaving Mercedes in the future gets him to that achievement well I guess that’s that. I mean Alonso is still putting in work on the track while being the oldest driver on the track.
That battle for second place for the Constructors Championship was so nerve wracking and fun to watch. Max having an outstanding year uhhh I love him it’s so well deserved. Just literally dominated that whole year.
You seriously got to respect that fan-fiction origin that Zak has in Formula 1. As much as I’m starting to really like McLaren, had to reevaluate when I heard and saw they had Trump there for the Miami race. Taking pictures and everything, such a bummer, that’s something hard to look past at least for me. Because that man stands against everything I believe in, it was so disappointing. But Lando is so great and very talented would be a shame if he’s views aligned with someone as terrible as Trump. I don’t mean to put u on the spot but do u have any opinions or feelings about this. It’s just i know I don’t know you in real life but I’ve come to genuinely respect ur opinion and outlook on things. Please if this is to personal then just disregard this whole paragraph.
Again thank u so much for introducing me into this fantastic sport is it weird if I say love u for it. Now I’m off to YouTube to watch the videos u recommended and fall more into the madness. Drive to Survive was an amazing experience definitely 9.7/10. I’m gonna need more F1driver!reader now lol. Just seen the news Hamilton in that Ferrari red is gonna be interesting to witness. But who is Carlos going to drive for next year I’m worried, Ik he’s too talented to not have a seat on a team but he needs a good team and good car. Yay I got to watch my first race live, those last few laps were so good I love to see a good battle. Lando making Max work for that win, it was a very fun first race for me. Anyway I hope u have a great week.
-S
Looks like I've got a lot to catch up on S(ainz)!! But I'm so glad you've enjoyed that season. I wish there were more moments of my man's Max, but I think he declined being on DTS as much, which is fair since they really paint him in a negative light.
I wish sometimes Daniel never left. While I'm glad Max gets the favorable treatment on Redbull, I think Daniel and Max were the closest thing for Redbull on being "fair" on both drivers. Well at least in my opinion.
But I think Lewis's move on Ferrari has been a long time coming even though I thought he was gonna retire with Merc. Like all that history, it just makes me sad but I'm happy for him.
But I've seen mix stories of why Trump was specifically with McLaren, supposedly it was because their garage was the closest to the exit. But regardless, the fact that Lando views Trump as a "respectable" man is really disappointing. Trump is GARABGE!! I really despise that man so much. To see him there was so DISGUSTING!! But honestly, like Lando, be so forreal with me.
In my opinion, I know that the driver's real life political opinions would upset me. I don't know much about what they believe, but I do know that Lewis's values of supporting black people, women, and LGBTQ+ is what I love the most.
But I feel honored that you respect my opinion, I feel like I talk more about my feelings for Wanda that I rarely share what I feel like in regards to politics.
And I'm so glad that you're going to stick with F1. I might start thinking more about what I could bring with F1 Driver!Reader. But did you see Monaco today?! Well it was today for me! Crazy lap one but I'm so glad Charles got his win :)))
But you have a great day now S! No gif for today cause I'm on the work computer :(((

April 2024 Reading
Neve, cane, piede- Claudio Morandini  (2016)  Story of an old mountain man/hermit, Adelmo Farandola, who hates being around others. He lives alone high up in an alpine valley, when an old dog makes his way to him. At first he tries to chase the dog off, but the dog stays and they develop a companionship. Through a tough winter, the man reminisces to the dog about his abusive childhood, hiding in the mountains to avoid the wartime conflicts, and his learning to deal with hunger, thirst, and sleep deprivation in order to stay hidden.
But as Adelmo has gotten older, his memory is slipping and his thoughts, while locked in his cabin for the long winter months, are becoming more disjointed. He also struggles with sounds he hears from the movement of the snow and ice. Avalanches are an ever-present, and real, concern.
Adelmo and the dog converse. The dog acts as a kind of 'second opinion' where alternative ideas are sounded out. The dog's opinion is the device for the old man's inner dialogue. Clearly, Adelmo's memory is slipping badly as the book moves along. In the spring, after they make their first trip down the mountain to restock on food, they discover a foot sticking out of the snow.
Adelmo figures there is no rush to do anything about it since the man is dead already. The dog suggests maybe they should tell someone in the village about it. The man puts it off. Later he does attempt to tell the shop owner in the town, but she doesn't realize he is serious. At some point later, Adelmo begins to recall perhaps having shot the man some time earlier, and his body had come down in the landslide. He decides he will bury/hide the body in an abandoned mine. Adelmo then decides to lay down with the cadaver and has a long conversation with it too.
Sicily- An Island at the Crossroads of History- John Julius Norwich  (2015)
A history of Sicily. Sicily's history goes back to around 700BC. The island was colonized by the Greeks in the east and the Carthaginians in the west. After the Punic Wars the Romans had effective control over the island. When the Roman empire fell in 476AD, the island was left largely to itself until the Byzantine empire invaded in 535 and took back the island for itself until around the mid 800s. The Arabs were invited over, then conquered the island for themselves and Sicily became an Emirate until the mid 1000s. When the Normans came, Sicily entered a golden age of multi-cultural prosperity that was the wonder of Europe. But when the island was turned over to the Hohenstaufen (German) dynasty through marriage around 1200, the island ceased to be an independent kingdom.
From that time on, the history of Sicily is told in the history of French, Spanish, and Austrian decisions made outside of Sicily. The island passed from one nation to the other with little to no regard for what the Sicilians themselves wanted.
Relegated to provincial status, treated as a place to be exploited, Sicilians learned to trust no one, and look out for themselves and themselves only.
As a Sicilian/American, it's heartbreaking to read. I loved learning more about the history of Sicily,  but it's tough to take at times.
Thus Spake Zarathustra- Friedrich Nietzsche  (1883-5)
Reading the prologue, it's not hard to see the philosophical connection between Nietzsche and some of the more heinous political systems that arose in the early to mid-twentieth century. I know Nietzsche fans will say that they didn't properly understand him, which may be true. I'm not saying that the Nazi's thought: Nietzsche's the thing... how can implement a system that best encapsulates his philosophy?
But looking at the philosophical ideas floating around at the time: Darwin was relatively new and people were still wrapping their heads around survival of the fittest, and the evolutionary idea that selection will find a way to get genes into the future.
Nietzsche talks about the coming superman; the fact that we won't be the superman, but we may be the direct ancestor of the superman. He speaks of the glory of manliness and being a warrior. These things tie in nicely with the idea of how we best bring about this new superman, who will usher in a new era of human proficiency.
Fascism then saw themselves as constructing a society built on such new men. They preached the need or manly sacrifice, and the need for war to toughen men's bodies and keep them from getting soft. This new society would bring about new men, which would be better than the effeminate populace getting too soft on comforts, and unwilling to sacrifice for a greater good.
I find it fascinating to read the book more for that sense of grasping the kinds of ideas that were capturing men's attention at the time. Fascism didn't just spring up out of nowhere with the idea: hey let's kill a bunch of people! It was a political response to people's fears and hopes of the times, and it must have seemed a plausible response to what people saw as the failures of the systems in place at the time.
Nietzsche hated Christianity and saw its doctrines as effeminizing men and turning them into docile sheep with no creative ideas. He preached strength and virtue, but virtue in more of the old Roman understanding than the Christian. He thought equality was stupid and contra-nature. He criticizes modern (late 1800s for him) culture, but sees Christianity at fault for most of the weaknesses of that culture.
One of the important concepts of the book is 'will to power'. But what exactly this means is hard to pin down. Maybe 'self-determination' would be a good word. Nietzsche writes that all creatures are obeying creatures. There are two sub-categories: those that command themselves and those that are commanded by others. Commanding oneself however is difficult and carries responsibility with it, so it is often avoided. Those then that are stronger will command others. But it is in the nature of life to continually surpass itself.   I think this is saying that the strong will naturally rise up and rule in power. Life inherently has the will to power, and it is the weakness of modern man that he has chosen to submit himself and be commanded.
In the third part of the book, Zarathustra, defines existence as an eternal recurrence.
The Return of the Native- Thomas Hardy  (1878)
Hardy's novels, and I've now read five of them, tend to start slow, but by the time I'm halfway through, I can't put them down. This one concerns mainly two couples, and a few secondary characters.
Thomasin Yeobright is a pretty young girl that lives on the Heath in England. She is engaged to be married to Damon Wildeve, known in the parts as a bit of a player. The marriage ceremony hits a snag and is unable to go through. We find out that Wildeve is perhaps more in love with another beauty on the Heath, Eustacia Vye. He had been involved with her, but when he expressed interest in Thomasin, Eustacia broke things off. Now they were meeting again, mostly because Eustacia sees him as a way out of the Heath. Wildeve and Eustacia both long to leave, while Thomasin grew up on the Heath and can't imagine leaving.
Eustacia's interest is pulled immediately away from Wildeve on the arrival of Thomasin's cousin, Clym, just arrived from a successful business stint in Paris. Eustacia sees a way out of the heath in Clym, and shortly after, they are married.
But Clym has no interest in leaving the Heath. He explains this to Eustacia, but at heart she thought she could bend him towards her will and change his mind. She grows morose when he insists on staying.
Meanwhile, Wildeve comes into some fortune and Eustacia starts to reconsider her path: perhaps Wildeve would become the way out, but she feels she can't just leave her husband.
Without giving away the ending, the story has to do with thwarted desires and frustrations, and the expectations of society versus personal desires.
Agnes Grey- Anne Bronte  (1847)
The novel really serves as an exposé for the treatment of governesses at the time. The main character goes to work for two families as a governess, where she is entrusted with raising children, but given no tools to succeed. In fact, both families raise their children to be dismissive and superior to those "beneath them". The governess is charged with teaching the children manners as well as schooling them, but they are allowed to rule over her. It is their wishes that must be followed, not hers. Yet she is blamed for the resultant problems.
Cranford- Elizabeth Gaskell  (1853)
A book with no discernable plot, about a group of ladies in the fictional town of Cranford. These ladies have sticks way up their butts about class, and they're way overconcerned about all the ways in which they can show themselves better to particular people. This is the main concern of their lives: finely dissecting the layers of society and then demonstrating to themselves that they are better than those "below them" in the execution of just about everything they do. Like I said... sticks WAY up their butts.
There are occasionally funny lines, for example: "Mrs. Jamieson, meanwhile, was absorbed in wonder why Mr. Mulliner did not bring the tea; and at length the wonder oozed out of her mouth."
As the book progresses, there is a severe financial setback for one of the characters and her reduced means force everyone to reconsider their evaluations of caste and value.
Manon Lescaut- Abbe Prevost  (1731)
The story of the young Chevalier des Grieux, who meets and immediately falls in love with the then 15 year-old Manon Lescaut. His unrestrained passion, and Manon's fickle attitude and desire for pleasures, lead him to repeatedly sink into troubles. Forced out of France, they wind up in New Orleans where Manon dies. The story is narrated by des Grieux, and I'm not sure I've found myself thinking: what are you DOING!? so much since the story of Pinocchio. It is both a love story and perhaps a cautionary tale about unrestrained passions.
I will say though, this story had me engaged from page one. I read nearly the entire novel in a day.
Steppenwolf- Hermann Hesse  (1927)
"For of all things, what I hated, abhorred and cursed most intensely was just this contentment, this will-being, the well-groomed optimism of the bourgeois, this lush, fertile breeding ground of all that is mediocre, normal, average."
The steppenwolf is the wild wolf of the steppes. Hesse considered that this was an alter-ego that lived alongside the civilized man that the world must be presented with. The wild wolf, he explains, has strayed into civilized territory, and can no longer find its home or the food it likes to eat.
During the story, Harry, the central character, is handed a tract called the steppenwolf, that describes his life, and tells him he is wrong: his personality isn't two mutually exclusive characters, it is a thousand, or more, competing characters. He then meets the beautiful Hermione, a counterpart to his life, who further breaks down his analysis, and sets to build up areas of his life that are deficient- but solely for the purpose of showing him that even being proficient in these areas is still nothing but unfulfilling.
The back cover contains a quote from a NY Times review: "The gripping and fascinating story of disease in a man's soul".
So much of the story is really dealing with meaning. They blame it on the mundane meaninglessness of middle class life. But I think it arises from abundance, and the concomitant depressing thought that if this is all there is, what's the point. Perhaps in times past, or even current times where life is subsistence, the general sense is "If only I were to have enough", then I could really be whole". And it's true that in modern, western societies, we have enough. Many people still think, "I still struggle a bit, so If only I were to have a little more, then I could really be whole."
But enough people, even more than a hundred years ago, had looked around at our prosperous modern western society, and thought, "wait... is this all there is?", and grew profoundly disappointed in it.
On the Road- Jack Kerouac   (1957)
The version I got is called the "original scroll". It's basically the original autobiographical narrative he wrote, with all the true names. The names were changed for the published 1957 version.
There are no chapter or section breaks. Or even any 'paragraphs'. It is written as one gigantic stream-of-consciousness flow.
The book is set in the period of 1947-49. Jack Kerouac and friends, particularly Neal Cassady, hit the road moving from NY to California and back, then do it again... then finally down to Mexico City where the book abruptly ends.
They take 'carefree' to the limit of careless, then to criminal and insane. By 250 pages in to this 300 page book, I was so sick of these morons antics, that I was hoping they'd just get locked up. In search of 'kicks', they left a trail of brokenness, and hurt wherever they went. Even their own friends were disavowing Jack and Neal by the end of it.
The Stranger- Albert Camus  (1942)
A man kills another man senselessly, is put on trial, and is given the death penalty. Camus was an absurdist; which is a philosophy that proposed life has no purpose. It isn't that everything is "absurd" in the way we typically think of the word now. As the main character muses on his life and death, he sees no real point in either.
2001: A Space Odyssey- Arthur C. Clarke  (1968)
This book was a product of a collab with Stanley Kubrick. The story was made into a movie at the same time. Though only Clarke was credited as the author on the book. An unknown, but obviously alien, monolith is discovered on the moon. And a team is sent to one of Jupiter's moons to explore a second monolith, but things go off course when the onboard sentient computer, HAL9000, flips out. One survivor makes it to the monolith to discover it is a portal to other star systems. He is eventually led to the aliens, but we don't learn anything about them.
