It took a few years and one big free-agent signing last week, but Correa and Buxton will play together there when they face the Mariners on Opening Day in less than two weeks.īefore becoming the Vikings general manager in January, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah had already spoken to a sports team from the Twin Cities.ĭuring the week of the Vikings-Browns Week 4 matchup at U.S. The Twins had hoped Correa and Buxton would have worked out together that day at Target Field. 413 with five home runs and 20 RBI in 15 games at Target Field with a 1.205 on base-plus-slugging percentage. And that workout ended up a portent, as he is batting. That ended up being a productive draft, as the Twins later selected Jose Berrios, Tyler Duffey and Taylor Rogers.īut the star of the class was Correa, whose 34.1 career WAR is the highest of any player selected in that round. The Twins would have gladly taken Correa if the Astros had selected Buxton but were more than pleased to take Buxton second overall. Houston had the first overall pick that year and took Correa. But Correa has handled short well, making terrific stops and showing off a powerful arm. Johnson was a little nervous then that Correa's body would not hold up at short and force him to third base. "That's all I remember it was a nice stadium and I hit a lot of bombs."Ĭorrea is 6-4 now and weighs 220 pounds. "That I hit a lot of bombs into the upper deck in that workout," Correa said in a 2016 interview. "It was impressive because he was just 17 years old, but he was hitting them out."Ĭorrea asked the batting practice pitcher to throw baseballs on the outer half of the plate so he could drive the ball the other way. But Correa put on an absolute show, hitting bombs out to right-center field. "That was the year Adam Brett Walker nearly hit one out of Target. Walker carried Milwaukee's offense throughout the 2020 regular season and he is a significant reason as to why the Milkmen finished with the league's best record and are preparing to face off against Sioux Falls in the American Association Championship Series."He had an unbelievable workout," said Twins senior adviser of scouting Deron Johnson, who was scouting director that year. He had two multi-home run game during the season, hitting two bombs apiece against Sioux Falls on July 29th and Chicago on August 30th. Walker was second in the league in slugging percentage and fourth in OPS.Īmong players on the Milkmen, Walker was first in home runs, RBI, slugging, OPS, and total bases, was second in hits and batting average, was fourth in on-base percentage. He was one of only two players who tallied at least 50 RBI, finishing one behind the league leader. Walker led the American Association with his 22 home runs in 2020, five more than any other player totaled this season. He even added three stolen bases and played solid defense during 44 starts in left field. He mashed as many long balls this year - 22 - as he did in 98 games in 2019. 268/.320/.609 to set a new career-high across all levels with a. Over the course of the shortened season, Walker appeared in 57 games and accrued 241 plate appearances. 777 OPS.ĭuring his second summer suiting up for his hometown independent nine, Walker took his game to new heights. He once again brandished his trademark home run power, launching 22 bombs to go along with a.

Walker appeared briefly for the Kansas City T-Bones in 2018, but played his first full season in the American Association in 2019 as part of the Milwaukee Milkmen expansion roster. He was also selected to participate in the prestigious Arizona Fall League that year. He launched 143 home runs in 704 minor league games, with a single-season high of 31 long balls for Double-A Chattanooga in 2015.

Walker played parts of seven seasons in the affiliated minor leagues, reaching as high as Triple-A while establishing himself as one of the top power threats in the professional game. After his collegiate career at Jacksonville University, he was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 3rd round of the 2012 MLB Draft. Walker, 28, is a native of the northside of Milwaukee and went to high school locally Milwaukee Lutheran. The award is voted on by the league's managers, team executives, and media representatives and this year it went to the top offensive player on the team with the best record. On Thursday he was named to the Postseason All-Star Team, and on Friday, Walker was honored as the 2020 American Association Player of the Year. The accolades continue to roll in for Milwaukee Milkmen outfielder Adam Brett Walker II. Adam Brett Walker II named American Association Player of the Year

Thank you so much dear!
This is the 50 Ways To Say “I Love You” thingy so here you go @faytalepsy
My ask box for those is still open in case anyone is interested and you can find this prompt list here 50 Ways To Say “I Love You”
You don’t have to pretend with me
He found her sitting at her desk on this late September evening, still working on grading papers. Hunched over forms, an uncharacteristic hand to her forehead seemingly worried.
He had come to check up on her as he had taken to doing since she had come back from the dead.
It was hard for him to be parted from her for more than a couple hours at a time and he knew she felt the same.
After she had come back and they had fought off Rosalind he had been adamant about not leaving her side, fearing their old mentor could come back to finish the job should he not have his fairy within reaching distance at all times.
He had clung to her like his life depended on it when she had started breathing again after they had dug her up. Soil and vines of the surrounding flowers still clinging to her.
He had carried her inside their school and up to her quarters and taken off her clothes, helped her shower and put her to bed, keeping vigil over her until she had woken up again several hours later.
Her sleep muddled brain still in the throes of a nightmare of being trapped underground had not been able to discern dream state from the real world until he had slid into bed beside her, holding her to him tightly. He had soothed her gently, whispering sweet nothings and reassurances into her ear until she had fallen asleep again.
Seeing her like this now, agitated him. She looked stressed and almost frail. A look he didn’t like seeing on his fairy at all.
Looking up from her work upon hearing him enter she gave him a small smile. It was a genuine smile but strained nonetheless making it seem almost fake if he hadn’t known her better.
Quickly closing the door behind him Saul strutted into the room, a concerned expression marring his features.
“Farah what is it? Are you alright?” The questions tumbled from his lips without pause as he came to a halt by her side.
Reaching for her upon coming to a standstill right next to where she was sitting he laid a hand on her shoulder, the other grasping her hand delicately.
Leaning back a little in her chair the headmistress looked at the forms in front of her again, a big sigh escaping her lips.
“It’s nothing, really.” Casting a warm glance up at him she closed her eyes for a moment before opening them again. Fixing him with a deep meaningful stare. ”I’m fine.”
Not believing her for a second the soldier stooped down a little and crouched next to her to be more at eye level with her.
Sliding his hand to the crook of her elbow now he murmured softly, “What is it?”
Shaking her head the woman sighed again before loosening his hold on her hand. Letting her face fall into both of her palms dejectedly she let out another sigh.
This worried the man greatly and he wound his arm around her back and took hold of her upper arm gently, his fingers encircling her biceps. Angling himself so as to see her more clearly he tried again. “Talk to me love, what’s wrong?” But the fairy just shook her head once more.
Letting go of her back and arm Saul began to scoot back the chair in a way that she was facing him now and not the desk anymore. He then loosened her hold on her own face as gently as he could taking in her sorrow stricken face and the frown marring her beautiful lips.
She had her eyes closed as he took in her features.
Laying his hand on her cheek softly he made her look down at him with the words, “Hey, look at me.”, to which she obliged instantly.
Her soulful deep brown eyes were pooling with unshed tears and it made his heart stop for a second.
Taking all his willpower not to bundle her up and flee the realm all together right this second the soldier murmured instead, “Come on now, Farah. You don’t have to pretend with me, you know that. Tell me.”
Biting her lip momentarily she looked at him and whispered, “I’m worried, Saul.”
Now it was his turn to shake his head as he frowned up at her, clearly not understanding.
Yes, they hadn’t defeated Rosalind completely and she was still out there but they were careful and had doubled their efforts to keep unwelcome guests from passing through the barrier. He had seen to it himself to have guards patrolling the building at all times.
But they also knew how powerful Rosalind really was and that scared the soldier too. More than he would like to admit.
Standing up tall again he chanced a glance outside the window half expecting to see their tormentor standing at the edge of the training grounds looking up at him mockingly. But of course there was no one there.
Turning back around to look at the headmistress again he wondered, “Did you see something? Was anything amiss today? Has something happened that made you believe something might be off?” He knew when to trust her instincts, as they had rarely ever been wrong. So he contemplated the possibilities that could have spooked her so while letting his eyes scan the training field again.
Her voice shook him out of his observations gently.
“No, nothing was amiss. It’s just-…”, her voice trailed off slightly as if unsure how to proceed.
“I’m just so worried for the children, Saul.”
This he understood. They were under an extreme amount of pressure caring for all of these lives every single day, keeping them safe and away from harm. He instantly knew where she was coming from with this.
“I would not be able to look myself in the eyes again if something happened to one of my pupils. I am so afraid she’ll come back and do something terrible to them like she did to us.” Halting as her words grew more shaky with each syllable passing her lips the fairy closed her eyes again in shame.
Seeing her like this, all worried and frightened made his heart ache in his chest.
Feeling the need to be close to her again he took the half a step towards her and enclosed her in his embrace.
Her arms settled around his lower hips snugly and her head came to rest on the spot between his chest and belly. Pressing her face into the material of his jumper the mind fairy breathed in deeply as if for the first time today, treasuring the smell of him.
Sauls arm snaked around her shoulders and his other hand came to rest on the back of her head where he began to rub soothing circles into her loosely braided hair.
That was also something that had changed with Rosalinds attempt on her life. It seemed like almost losing her life had made her lose her grasp on this stern persona she had crafted so meticulously over the years of being headmistress.
Her trademark hairdos pinning the golden brown locks high on top of her head had given to a more delicate style now.
She had taken to wearing her hair in less strict but no less intricate hairstyles these past few weeks and he liked the look on her. It made her appear softer and slightly more approachable which the students had taken as an open invitation to get closer to her after she had come back.
Hugs had become a daily occurrence now.
Students seeking out guidance in the middle of the hall and after a quick chat grabbing her around the middle gently and letting go just as quickly, throwing her a timid smile in thanks and vanishing off to where they needed to go next.
The first time it happened had been almost comical to say the least but she had taken it in stride and learned to cherish those moments.
The student body was different now. They appreciated her more with each day passing and each and every single one of the pupils made sure that she was well taken care of at all times throughout the day.
Be it juice boxes left at her desk before class had even begun or an apple sitting on top of her books intended for the lesson. It could be a muffin waiting for her on her desk in her office or pupils holding doors for her and accompanying her to her next lecture.
The students made sure to take care of this second chance they had been given with her. Of having their beloved headmistress back.
It was always rather simple things really. But they were greatly appreciated and didn’t go unnoticed by Saul. He was grateful for all these children being there for her.
Rubbing at the base of her neck and sinking his hands into her hair more fully now he massaged her scalp gently, all the while being mindful of the few pins holding the strands up.
He drew her nearer slightly before craning his neck down to whisper to her softly, “We will get through this Farah.”
He knew it was futile to be making silly and unwarranted promises because he knew some things were just out of his control but he could promise her one thing.
Letting his arm drag across her back gently and holding her to him tightly he vowed to her, “We will bring an end to this. She has caused us so much misery for way too many years and she will pay for what she has done to you, I promise you that.”
Feeling her nod into his belly and grasping onto his jumper more forcefully now he promised her one last thing.
“And I will not part from you ever again until my dying breath. This I swear to you.”
He had been given a second chance too, he knew. And he would make damn sure to make this one count.
He heard her sniffle slightly before pulling away from him a fraction to be able to look up at him. Her eyes shone brightly, tears still clinging to her lashes but her face was clear and open.
Her hopeful look had him smile in return and lean down to press the softest of kisses to her forehead. Lingering there for just a minute breathing her in, he relished in the feeling of her warm and soft skin.
They stood like this for a while, never relinquishing the hold on the other. For how long they stood there they didn’t know. And it didn’t matter.
It was Saul who broke away from her first.
Taking in her sleepy look he held out his hand for her to take and pulled her to her feet slowly but surely.
“How about something to eat? I’m famished.”
This made the woman giggle, a sound he would never tire of hearing for as long as he lived he was sure.
“You are always famished Saul.”
Pulling her around the desk he stopped by the coat hanger and helped her into her jacket, making sure to pull her hair out of her collar as he did so.
“Ah yes, that may be true. And you know what really helps with that? Spaghetti!”
The laughter this pulled from her lips made the specialist practically beam with pride at being able to make her forget the world around them even if only for a little while.
Pulling her into his side he began leading her out of the room and into the hallway all the while keeping a firm grip on her side.
To any other person it might’ve seemed possessive the way he was holding her to him but to her it was heaven. She felt safe in his embrace, surrounded by his scent and warmth. His strong arms banding around her, encasing her and holding her close.
“Is it because it’s the only thing you can actually cook without burning down the kitchen?”
Chuckling at her jest he looked down at her and found her gaze seeking out his, her face glowing with mirth.
Positively beaming now he gave back, “Maybe? Are you complaining?”
Shaking her head she whispered a soft ‘no’ before letting her head fall to his shoulder gently. A small sigh of contentment accompanied the movement as she let him lead her through the narrow hallways and dark corridors of their beloved Alfea.
There was nothing they couldn’t get through together she believed that now.
Always had, really.
Because they weren’t just ordinary people. They were Farah Dowling and Saul Silva. A fairy and her specialist. A powerful unit and a force to be reckoned with.
And as long as they were together, they would be fine.
They would just have to make sure to hold onto each other tightly.
Nothing easier than that.

Novelty under the 1911 Act was determined with reference to India, whereas under the Designs Act, 2000 novelty is determined on a global basis. The classification system of the 1911 Act was based on material characteristics of the article, whereas the Design Rules 2001 and the amendment in 2008 and 2021 provide an elaborate classification based on Locarno Classification system hence  for the purposes of the registration of designs and of these rules, articles are classified as per current edition of “International Classification for Industrial Designs (Locarno Classification) published by World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)”. It covers foundational data science tools as well as techniques, including getting, cleansing, and also exploring data, shows in R, and also conducting reproducible research. Artificial intelligence is a really wide subject as well as becoming a specialist in this field can be really difficult.

The Von Erich family part 4 He was able to continue wrestling after the accident with a prosthesis and until his death, kept the amputation secret to the majority of fans and fellow wrestlers, even going to the extreme of showering with his boots on.  After the amputation of his foot, Kerry became addicted to pain killers, followed by several drug problems. Among the many of them were two arrests, the first of which resulted in probation. One day after being indicted for the second charge, which likely would have resulted in extensive jail time (being a violation of his probation), Kerry committed suicide with a single gunshot to the heart with a .44 caliber pistol on February 18, 1993 on his father’s ranch in Texas. Bret Hart states in his biography, Hitman: My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling, that Kerry had told him months before about his plans, that he had wanted to follow his late brothers, that they were calling him. His marriage had fallen apart as well, and he thought his death was inevitable. On September 10, 1997, Fritz, the Von Erich patriarch, died of lung cancer that had spread to his brain. “The Golden Warrior,” Kevin Von Erich, is the second oldest and last surviving son of Fritz Von Erich. Born on May 15, 1957 in Belleville, Illinois, the majority of Kevin’s career was spent working in World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW), where he had feuds against wrestlers such as Chris Adams, The Fabulous Freebirds, and Ric Flair. It was there that Kevin became known for utilizing trademark maneuvers like the body scissors and the iron claw, as well as for wrestling barefoot. Kevin has been married since August 1, 1980 to Pamela J. May. Together they have four children, including two daughters: Kristen Rain and Jillian Lindsey, as well as two sons: David Michael “Ross” and Kevin Marshall. In May 2006, Kevin sold the WCCW footage to Vince McMahon and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). At WrestleMania XXV, Kevin represented the Von Erich family during their induction into the WWE Hall of Fame. #destroytheday https://www.instagram.com/p/CDJvHRjBD0R/?igshid=c0pkjg5t94a7

@alienfuckeronmain tagged me in a super long list of questions to get to know me, which I’m THRILLED about! Since I don’t think many people will want to read through 49 things about me, I’m going to tag @jessiohhh, @armiteggio, and @watsonmoony up here, to do if you want! (Yes I’m tagging you all again, but still, no pressure!)
1. Do you prefer writing with a black pen or blue pen? black pen all the way
2. Would you prefer to live in the country or city? I had to actually think about this because I have always loved cities so much. BUT. I think I like the idea of living in them more than I would actually like it. I definitely prefer the peacefulness of living in the country though, especially if it’s near a body of water. Could even just be a stream or pond.
3. If you could learn a new skill what would it be? Hmmmm. Most of the skills I want to learn wouldn’t be useful?!? Like, learning Elvish. I suppose it would be nice to actually learn to draw. OR GROW PLANTS.
4. Do you drink your tea/coffee with sugar? Coffee, yes, with creamer too. Tea is had black though.
5. What was your favourite book as a child? How are we defining child? Because like. Under 10 age, it was the book called The Witches and the Singing Mice by Jenny Nimmo about these two tom cats that save the children in a village from witches who put them in a coma like thing. I fucking loved it and yes, I still have it on my shelf.
6. Do you prefer baths or showers? showers! I’ve never been a bath person. I don’t understand it. Showers are the ultimate for chilling out and winding down, and mine tend to last like thirty minutes or as long as we have hot water.
7. If you could be a mythical creature, which one would it be? I... have no fucking clue. Fairy?? (unless we’re including hobbit in mythical, which I think we should because that’s my choice)
8. Paper or electronic books? Paper. I’ve found that if I read published books electronically, I tend to not take it as seriously or judge it more harshly. Or maybe the books I’ve read electronically just sucked. IDK.
9. What is your favourite item of clothing? I stole a hoodie from my dad when I moved out. I’m pretty sure he’s had since the nineties. It’s just light blue and soooooo soft.
10. Do you like your name or would you like to change it? I used to not like my name (Robyn), but I’ve learned to love it and I wouldn’t want it to be something else.
11. Who is a mentor to you? One of my professors, probably. I still check in him with once a year, despite not having him as a teacher in about seven years. He helped me understand the psychology field a lot better, and I felt more prepared becoming a therapist because of him.
12. Would you like to be famous and if so, what for? fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck no. If I get famous for anything, it will be for having a trademarked expression showing my displeasure.
13. Are you a restless sleeper? Yes, indeed. I’ve had insomnia for about fourteen years. It’s worse when I’m going through the PTSD season (roughly September-December), and the rest of the year I tend to move around a lot or talk in my sleep.
14. Do you consider yourself a romantic person? yesssss but I think other people would disagree
15. Which element best represents you? water!
16. Who do you want to be closer to? I have gotten better at pursuing friendships, and those things take time, so I’m not sure if there’s anyone in particular that I’m like, scared to approach.
17. Do you miss someone at the moment? my parents, always. Living twelve hours away sucks balls.
18. Tell us about an early childhood memory. Okay. I was once brought home by a police officer when I was nine for loitering at a pet store down the street. The employee (who had to be like seventeen or something) called the fucking cops instead of just talking to me. And then I panicked and tried to run, IMMEDIATELY got caught, and then tried to lie about where I lived. Needless to say, by the time the cop got me home, he was thoroughly unimpressed and was very rude to my dad as a result and apparently made some comment about him not being a fit father because he was covered with tattoos (???). (Also, I recognize that me getting away with this is peak privilege)
19. What is the strangest thing you have eaten? All of freshman year, a friend and I would combine our breakfasts/snacks in our English class. This typically was strawberry poptarts, cheetos, and pink lemonade. It’s actually really fucking good. Super bad for you.
20. What are you most thankful for? the support of my partner, even though I’m currently annoyed at him.
21. Do you like spicy food? Nooooo, I cannot handle it at all
22. Have you ever met someone famous? Yes! Mostly from Cons and stuff, the highlight of which was meeting Nicholas Brendan.
23. Do you do you keep a diary or journal? not usually, but I will write things down to help with processing them. After my grandma died and the subsequent family drama, there was a lot of ‘journaling’
24. Do you prefer to use a pen or a pencil? Pen! Can’t stand pencils.
25. What is your star sign? Sagittarius
26. Do you like your cereal soggy or crunchy? What kind of question is this? Who likes soggy cereal?
27. What would you want your legacy to be? That I tried my best, honestly. I don’t think about it much beyond that.
28. Do you like reading, what was the last book you read? i LOVE reading. I’ve fallen out of the habit since I went through college and haven’t been able to get back up to where I was. The last book I read all the way through would have been Hunchback of Notre Dame, which I actually thoroughly enjoyed! Currently I’m reading my way through the History of Middle Earth, which means jumping between seven different books to do chronologically.
29. How do you show someone you love them? my love language is quality time or physical touch, so spending time and lots of hugs!
30. Do you like ice in your drinks? In lemonade or juice drinks, yes. Everything else no - especially not water
31. What are you afraid of? Oh, so many things. Top of the list is the loss of my family or cats.
32. What is your favourite scent? Lavender, sandalwood, or the ocean
33. Do you address older people by their name or surname? I don’t tend to address anyone by their name...
34. If money was not a factor, how would you live your life? I would honestly be home a lot more and not have a TBR pile consisting of over a hundred books.
35. Do you prefer swimming in pools or the ocean? I don’t really have a preference! I love water and swimming, so any body of water works for me. I won’t, however, swim in a pool when I’m near an ocean. That just seems weird to me.
36. What would you do if you found £50 on the ground? Probably spend it, honestly. Buy a meal for myself or something a bit fun.
37. Have you ever seen a shooting star? I think so?
38. What is the one thing you would want to teach your children? I am except from this question because that will not be happening! I do try to make sure my niece accepts herself for how she is and that she doesn’t have to BE anything to be loved
39. If you had to have a tattoo, what would it be and where would you get it? Well, I have tattoos already. And I have one planned for next month! I’m getting a Sweet Pea on my forearm for my grandma, because she always called me a sweet pea. Other than that, I have plans to the ring poem by tolkien around my ankle in the black speech.
40. What can you hear now? I can’t do anything without listening to music, which is currently Pirateship by Rumahoy, because @alienfuckeronmain has gotten me into metal like I’ve never been before
41. Where do you feel the safest? In my partner’s hugs
42. What is the one thing you want to overcome/conquer? hating my body
43. Of you could travel back to any era, what would it be? I don’t want to chooooooose. All of them. All of them.
44. What is your most used emoji? the crying laughing face
45. Describe yourself using one word. Random!
46. What do you regret the most? Regrets.... I guess I regret not being closer to the side of the family that has always liked/supported me until I was an adult. I could have had so many more memories with them and been closer to those cousins! Instead of the ones that straight up abandoned me. Good times.
47. Last movie you saw? King of Staten Island, actually. It was pretty good, but I felt like it ended too early
48. Last tv show you watched? It’s always New Girl, technically, because I fall asleep watching it. Other than that, probably John Oliver last week.
49. Invent a word and it’s meaning. I don’t invent words. I do, however, invent a sign language of my own that involves gesticulating wildly while trying to convey my meaning. I have no way to describe these signs in text, unfortunately.

Happy International Hat Day: Bowlers and Fedoras and Cloches, Oh My! By Jill Blake
Hats have been a staple in fashion for centuries, with origins that date back to ancient Egypt around the year 3200 BC. Of course, hat styles have changed over time, but their purposes are pretty much the same: either functionality by providing protection from the sun and other elements, or merely serving as a fashion statement. Historically, hats also often represented an individual’s social standing, with different types of hats worn by certain social classes and for certain events or occupations, from ornate wide-brimmed hats, to high quality bowlers, to newsboy caps. Hats were also part of social convention, with men wearing hats when outside and women wearing anything from pillbox hats to fascinators to complete their outfits for church or other social functions. For International Hat day, here’s a list of some popular hat styles of the 20th century. Many of these hat styles can be found on the TCM shop.
Pork Pie Hat
Tumblr media
The pork pie hat dates back to the early-to-mid 1800s and was quite popular with men. The hat was often made of high-quality felt, but also could be made out of cotton or straw. The pork pie, or “stingy brim”, hat has distinctive features with a low crown and narrow brim. After the Civil War in the United States, the pork pie wasn’t as popular in men’s fashion. In the 1920s, silent film star and director Buster Keaton made the pork pie an integral part of his on-screen persona, helping popularize the hat once more. And in William Friedkin’s THE FRENCH CONNECTION (’71), Gene Hackman’s character, Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle, sports a pork pie hat.
Bowler Hat
Tumblr media
The Bowler hat originates from England and was created by Thomas and William Bowler in London during the mid-1800s. The Bowler is typically made of felt and has a rounded crown, narrow brim and is very durable. While it looks formal by today’s fashion standards, the bowler was considered a more informal hat for day-to-day wear and was mainly worn by middle and upper-class men from butlers and valets, to bankers and members of the aristocracy. Perhaps the most famous bowler in classic film belonged to Charlie Chaplin, who wore the trademark bowler for his iconic Little Tramp character in films such as MODERN TIMES (’36), CITY LIGHTS (’31), and THE KID (’21). Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy also famously wore bowler hats in many of their films, like the short ANOTHER FINE MESS (’30). Other examples include Jack Lemmon in Billy Wilder’s The Apartment (1960) and James Cagney during the “Harrigan” musical number in Michael Curtiz’s YANKEE DOODLE DANDY (’42).
Fedora
Tumblr media
The fedora is perhaps the most iconic hat in film history, particularly throughout the 1930s up through the 1950s. It’s typically made of high-quality felt, ranging from wool to cashmere to mink. The hat also usually has a wide, soft brim and a pinched crown that is indented at the top with some kind of ribbon running around the base of the crown. The fedora dates back to the 1890s and was originally considered a ladies’ hat. By the 1920s, the fedora was popularized by male members of the British Royal family and became a staple of men’s fashion. By the 1930s, the fedora was associated with gangsters and tough guys, as well as private detectives and plain clothes police officers. Almost every modern film from the 1930s through the 1950s features a fedora, including James Stewart’s Macaulay Connor in George Cukor’s THE PHILADELPHIA STORY (’40); Dick Powell’s Philip Marlowe in Edward Dmytryk’s film noir MURDER, MY SWEET (’44); and perhaps the fedora’s most famous wearer, Humphrey Bogart as Rick Blaine in Michael Curtiz’s CASABLANCA (’42). Ingrid Bergman also wore a variation of the fedora as Alicia Huberman in Alfred Hitchcock’s NOTORIOUS (’46).
Fascinator
Tumblr media
The fascinator is more headpiece than an actual hat, but has long been a staple of women’s fashion, particularly in Europe. Fascinators are typically decorative and are clipped or pinned into the hair. They can be made of a wide-range of materials, including silk, wool and feathers and can have netted veils. Fascinators are mainly worn in traditional or formal settings, such as during church services, weddings or funerals. There are countless examples of fascinators in classic film, but one of the most popular is the one that Rosalind Russell’s Sylvia Fowler wears with her Adrian-designed eyeball blouse in George Cukor’s THE WOMEN (’39).
Top Hat
Tumblr media
The top hat is one of the most recognizable hats in history. It is typically associated with formal dress dating back to the 1700s all the way up to the mid-1900s and is still worn today for certain social events. The top hat is tall, with a flat top and wide brim, and is usually made of silk, beaver fur or cloth. The hat was typically associated with wealth and prestige but eventually became accessible to a wide-range of social classes. Like the fedora, the top hat is featured in countless classic movies. Fred Astaire often wore one in his RKO musicals with Ginger Rogers, such as the appropriately named TOP HAT in 1935, directed by Mark Sandrich. Then there’s Fredric March, who always wears a top hat for a night out in Victorian-era London, whether he’s Dr. Henry Jekyll or his sinister alter-ego Mr. Hyde. But the top hat wasn’t limited to men—Marlene Dietrich famously wore one in her first American film, Josef von Sternberg’s MOROCCO (’30), as did Josephine Baker—both women pushing the boundaries of gender and redefining femininity.
Cloche Hat
Tumblr media
The cloche hat was one of the most popular hats for women in the early 20th century. The cloche dates back to 1908 and was designed by French fashion designer Caroline Reboux and named for its bell shape. The cloche was one of the most versatile hats in a woman’s wardrobe, worn with casual, everyday clothing, as well as fancier versions for evening wear. The cloche was also popular because it accentuated the shorter hairstyles that were becoming more popular at the time. Joan Crawford, Josephine Baker, Nancy Carroll, Norma Shearer and Louise Brooks all famously wore cloche hats. One of the most stunning examples is in Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s technicolor masterpiece, THE LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP (’43) and worn by Deborah Kerr.
Hunter/Trapper Hat
Tumblr media
The hunter or trapper hat is sort of a variation on the deerstalker hat, typically associated with the literary character Sherlock Holmes. The trapper hat can be made of fur, leather, wool or flannel, and it has ear flaps that can be tied back. The hat is more function than style, providing warmth for a variety of outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing or selling Christmas trees, like Rock Hudson’s Ron Kirby in Douglas Sirk’s ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS (’55).
Bonus: Doris Day’s Many Hats
Tumblr media
Doris Day has rocked some hats in her day, particularly in her three films with Rock Hudson: PILLOW TALK (’59), LOVER COME BACK (’61), and SEND ME NO FLOWERS (’64). Pillbox hats. Cloche hats. Fur hats. Straw hats. Bubble hats. Bucket hats. Sun hats. And plenty of “I-don’t-know-what-that-is-but-it’s-fabulous” hats. In the late 1950s and 1960s, Day re-popularized many of the hat styles from the 1920s and 1930s, with a funky, mid-century twist. Doris wore them all and she looked absolutely fabulous.

Cotton Yarn Experiment with Lily Sugar’n Cream
So What’s Up with Cotton for the Kitchen
Coming up shortly is the new “Crochet for the Kitchen Series”. If you have been following along with my crochet tutorials and ideas over the past 8 years, you will know I haven’t got into cotton much. There’s some reasons for that or should I say excuses.
Many years ago, I made a dishcloth with just double crochet. I wasn’t really happy with it. One dish washing session, the dishcloth was stretched beyond recognition and I was so disappointed. In the attempt to try again, I used Acrylic Yarn for the second one and I might as well just tossed the ball into the trash without even crocheting it. Now, I’m not the smartest tool in the shed, so I wasn’t understanding the properties of cotton yarn verses acrylic and things to look for.
Fast forward to today, I use cotton more as I understand when and how to use it. Does it require me to have a degree in yarn-ology? Not really and by the way, as far as I know there is no degree for such things but it’s fun to think about a certificate in such things!
Cotton Properties
Cotton doesn’t stretch yarn wise. If you are going to do loose stitching, the project may stretch as a result of the stitching but it is not the yarn stretching itself.
It is sturdy and durable.
Once a project is stretched, it doesn’t bounce back.
It’s eco friendly as it’s a source of yarn that is actually grown.
Cotton originally feels a bit rough but washing it will have it calm down and soften up.
It takes to dyes beautifully with bold and bright colours as being an option.
On a hot day or people who live in warmer climates, cotton projects will keep you cooler and not keep in the heat like animal blends or acrylics.

The Experiment
Cotton Yarn Experiment with Lily Sugar’n Cream
Being that I didn’t understand cotton and the properties of cotton many years ago. I didn’t get that not all yarn can be used in the kitchen. Cotton has properties, being natural, that other yarns cannot offer.
Known Facts – Non-Cotton Yarns
Using animal blends such as wool or alpaca would be a waste as it’s higher priced and will not last in the kitchen, unless it’s for decor only things.
Using acrylic or petroleum based yarns such as nylon, polyester and others. Placing a hot casserole dish onto the surface, if it’s made with these materials, will cause the yarn to melt and potentially burn.
Using acrylics or petroleum yarns for things such as oven mitts, hot plate servers or other things involving protecting your hands from absorbing the heat of a dish in the kitchen has serious potential for personal injuries which could include the yarn melting onto your skin causing significant burns.
Cotton under Kettle with Boiling Water
Known Facts – Protection
Cotton can withstand high temperatures. Due to the temperatures it can take, cotton can be sterilized. Being that it can resist heat, it is a great barrier between a hot surface and surface such as a table or counter where a hot item may burn the surface.
It can be used for oven mitts and pot holders. Be aware of the stitch as gaps between the stitches may allow your skin to push through the stitches to touch the hot surface.
Cotton is long lasting as it’s a natural fiber
Cotton is hypoallergenic.
Cotton is less sensitive to sunlight and will resists from colour fading.
Cotton works for keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It naturally absorbs moisture which adjusts based on your situation. Moisture is what can cause over heating and feeling cold in the winter.
Yarn is so strong that it is nearly impossible to break the yarn with pulling on it without assistance such as scissors or sharp edge to break the yarn strand.
Dish Washing with Cotton Yarns
One element that I wasn’t careful with many years ago was that my stitch choice and hook didn’t match the recommendation of the yarn. For dish washing, you want tight stitches. Though the cotton yarn will not stretch, the stitches itself can stretch. Loose stitches will stretch the project. Tighter is better. Years ago, my second dishcloth was made with acrylic. You will see in my experiment why it’s the wrong choice, but if you are new to using yarn, you may make the same mistakes I did.
Below is my experiment of testing Cotton verses Acrylic in water and scrubbing.
Lily Sugar’n Cream Cotton Yarn Experiment
Test includes wetting both cotton and acrylic yarn.
Scrubbing a cutting board.
Lily Sugar’n Cream Cotton Yarn Experiment. Cotton on the left, acrylic on the right.
Cotton yarn instantly absorbed the water and sank to the bottom.
Acrylic yarn stayed afloat and had to be forced under the water to absorb the water.
This confirmed that cotton does in fact absorb moisture. Therefore making it cooler in the summer to wear and warmer in the winter as moisture is the cause of feeling hot or cold.
Lily Sugar’n Cream Cotton Yarn Experiment
After forcing the acrylic into the water and massaging the yarn strand, it finally absorbed the water.
Upon pulling out, the acrylic feels thinner to the touch but the cotton remains unchanged.
This confirms that cotton isn’t stretching or changing when water is hitting it.
Lily Sugar’n Cream Cotton Yarn Experiment
1 minute of rubbing acrylic yarn onto the cutting board.
Fibers are beginning to separate from the strand.
Fibers feel thinner.
Fibers are grabbing onto each other like Velcro.
Lily Sugar’n Cream Cotton Yarn Experiment
Scrubbing the cutting board for 1 minute, like the acrylic example. The cotton yarn appears to be unchanged.
The plies have held together.
The yarn strand is rolling with other and the fibers are not pulling away from the strand.
Thickness and stretch remains unchanged.
Lily Sugar’n Cream Cotton Yarn Experiment
At the end of the experiment, the cotton yarn on the right comes apart back to it’s original format without any exhaustion or difficulties. The acrylic on the left has fibers that have pulled apart and are grabbing onto other fibers making it more difficult to pull the example apart. It can be done, but it’s not with ease like cotton.
If you were to use cotton to dry the dishes or tea towels, the cotton will pull the water from the surfaces while the acrylic will try to fight it. After rubbing surfaces dry, the acrylic example will look pilled and damaged. It will never look the same as when it was finished coming off your hook.
The cotton yarn can withstand the demands of a kitchen and has properties that we need to have in the kitchen. While acrylic yarns are fabulous in other parts of lives, the kitchen is NOT the place for the acrylic.
Does Cotton Matter in the Kitchen: The Experiment So What's Up with Cotton for the Kitchen Coming up shortly is the new "Crochet for the Kitchen Series".

the 100 ask game
tagged by the lovely @pendragaryen
1. What station on the Ark would you be from?
Whichever used to be the Australian station I guess.
2. What would you get arrested for on the Ark?
I’d like to say I’d go down for something brave and heroic but it would probably something stupid and trivial, like the space equivalent of jay-walking.
3. Would you take off your wristband when you landed on the ground?
Not at first, but I’d definitely take it off for that sweet, sweet panther meat after a day or two.
4. What would the necklace Finn would make for you look like? (Clarke: deer/Raven: a raven duh..)
Well, first of all, I’d punt him halfway across the dropship camp before he even had a chance, so jot that down.
But an elephant, I guess, ugh.
5. If you could resurrect any MINOR character who would it be?
Fox, poor baby, I miss her.
6. Create a squad of 5 characters to go on missions with. Who are they?
Bellamy, Murphy, Roan, Clarke, Diyoza
7. What Grounder Clan would you belong to?
Floukru babey, take me to the sea!
8. What would your name be in Trigedasleng? (example: Octavia=Okteivia…just make it up!)
Lucia ... but emphasis on the second syllable... so like ... Lu-SHA. It would probably just get shortened down to Sha.
9. Thoughts on Finn? Some people hate him, and others love him, so I’m curious
Finn Collins is the boy who you think is cute at first, but then he turns out to be that middle class white boy who thinks he knows more than the professor in Philosophy & Ethics 101 and interrupts then at every chance he gets. He has a BLM tshirt but also insists on knowing where any POC he meets is “from”. Goes to the Gender Studies class, but you heard through the grapevine that he’s cheating on his girlfriend. Shallow, third-rate garbagé who thinks he knows better than you because he’s ~sensitive~
Finn Collins could die in a fire and I would not care.
10. Be honest. How willing would you have been to take the chip without knowing all the horrible things it does?
A chip that cures my mental illness and helps me live the day to day nightmare that is Earth? Hell yeah I’m taking it.
11. What character do you relate to most?
Probably Harper actually. I too am a Mum friend who is sweet and caring and who will absolutely rip you a new one if you attack any of my adopted kids.
12. What character do you like the least?
See Question 9.
13. Describe your delinquent outfit. (Would you wear something like Murphy’s jacket with the spikey red shoulder patch or have a trademark like Jasper’s goggles? Be creative, yet practical)
black skinny jeans, combat boots, blue long sleeve shirt white singlet layered combo, and big green army surplus jacket.
14. Favorite type of mutant animal?
Pauna. Rest in peace you chaotic 2-tonne plot hole.
15. What would your job be on the Ark?
I probably would have been in the childcare system, or some kind of human relations work.
16. Would you have willingly pumped Ontari’s heart if Abby asked?
Of course! I gotta keep our girl Clarke alive in there! Imma be real with you though chief, I would probably be looking at the wall the whole time. I don’t have a great stomach for body gore.
17. If Lexa wasn’t Heda, but she was still alive then who would have made the best commander?
Out of all the Nightbloods? No one jumps out at me as particularly competent tbh. I’ve got high hopes for Madi though.
18. How would you act if you ate the hallucinogenic nuts like Jasper and Monty?
Probably sobbing, stuck within the dark inner workings of Depression Brain. I have absolutely no faith that I would have a good trip.
19. How would you have dealt with Charlotte’s crime? A more John Murphy approach or Bellamy Blake approach?
Charlotte needed help desperately. I would have pardoned her.
20. Who should have been the Chancellor, if anyone?
Bellamy and Clarke as co leaders.
Kane and Indra as consultants. Raven is head of Tech. Let’s go people!
21. Would you have been on Pike’s side like Bellamy or on Kane’s side? Or Clarke in Polis?
I would’ve been on Kane’s side
22. Mount Weather had a lot of modern commodities. (example: Maya’s Ipod) What is the one thing you would snatch while there?
New books probably.
23. What would your Grounder tattoos look like? Hairstyle? War paint?
I’d probably have the tatts and war paint of my kru. I loved Octavia’s hair during season 2, so something along those lines, or wild and free with beads and braids like Luna.
24. Favorite quote?
“The dead are gone, Clarke, the living are hungry,” is a fucking raw line.
“It won’t survive me,” is another banger.
“You may be the Chancellor, but I am in charge,” cemented my love for Clarke Griffin.
I could go on...
25. If all of the characters were in the Hunger Games, who would have the best shot at winning?
Team Cockroach. Murphy.
Clarke and Bellamy have that Plot Armour though so I like their chances.
26. Least favorite ship? Favorite canon ship? Favorite non canon ship? NOT INCLUDING CL OR BC OR BE
Least fave: I have been prohibited.
Fave canon: Memori.
Fave non-canon: I have been prohibited.
27. A song that should be included in the next season? If there had to be another guest star like Shawn Mendes on the show, who would you want to make a cameo?
I am waiting for them to use Bloodsport by Raleigh Ritchie. Or something by either Delta Rae or Sara Barielles, simply because I love them.
28. What would you do if you were stuck in the bunker with Murphy for all that time?
Probably be a couch potato. My latent doomsday brain would kick in and I’d just give up, so the bunker finally opening would be a nice surprise.
29. You’re an extra that gets killed off. How do you die?
I was chipped and never seen again bro.
30. A character you’d like to learn more about and get flashbacks of?
I want more Aurora flashbacks so bad it hurts but I know we’ll never get them. I just want people to stop treating her like she was a deadbeat or even an abusive parent. She wasn’t. She was doing the best with what she had, which was fuck all.
31. A character you’d bang?
They’re all my children ... I couldn’t.
On the other hand, if Lindsey Morgan was interested...
32. Would you stay in the Bunker? Go up to Space? Or live on your own in Eden?
EDEN. Are you kidding? I’ll take berries over algae or bunker meat any day.
33. In the Bunker, would you follow Octavia? What would you do to pass the time underground?
I would follow her cause if I didn’t I Would Die. I would spend my time trying to be as quiet and small as possible, and stay out of her way!
34. What crime would you commit in the Bunker that lands you in the fighting pits?
Someone reported me muttering dissent when I didn’t think anyone was around.
35. Up in Space, who would you bond with first? Who would be the most difficult for you to get along with?
This may come as a surprise but I don’t bond with people very easily (lol). Harper probably sought me out and made sure I was okay. Echo and I have the same sense of humour so we’d probably be close. Monty too. Murphy would drive me up the wall.
36. How long do you think you would last on Earth by yourself?
2 weeks, tops.
37. When the Eligius ship lands what do you do?
Hide and observe from a far. Don’t attack or provoke in any way.
38. Favorite Eligius character? Least favorite?
DIYOZA.
McCreary.
39. Would you Spacewalk?
If I’d passed all the tests and training and it was all above board? Sure. If not? Absolutely not are you crazy?!
40. Would you prefer to eat Windshield Bugs, Space Algae, or Bunker Meat?
The right answer is algae, but my tastebuds say steak over bugs or glorified pond scum. Sorry.
41. Would you start a war for the last spot of green on earth? What would your solution be to avoid it?
I won’t win a fight to the death, so you best believe I’m going to use diplomacy to it’s absolute limits and then some.
42. Would you rather dig out flesh-eating worms or stick thumb drives into bullet holes?
USB to the arm 100% percent. In and out, quick extraction, no pain caused since they’re already dead, and thumb drives aren’t vicious, carnivorous murder worms which is a huge plus.
43. Are you willing to poison your sister for the Traitor Who You Love? What would you do to stop Octavia?
If my sister had gone that far off the deep end? Probably. I can’t really imagine it though, my sister is so level headed.
44. Would you go to sleep in cryo or stay awake like Marper?
I’d volunteer to be a custodian. It suits me. Getting to live in peace, taking care of the people I love for the rest of my life after the chaos and trauma of the ground seems near heavenly.
45. Who are you waking up first to explore the new planet?
Bellamy and Clarke.
I tag: @clarkgriffon @honeybellarke @nvermindiseeyou @ffaraday @galaxydanvers @marvelscaptainss @raven-reyes-of-sunshine @perpetual-fantasy @prosciuttoe @fen-ha-fuck-you
The above is in no particular order, and you should feel no obligation to fill out the questions if you don’t want to. This is all fun and games. Take care 💖

Paris sans Agnès by Andrew Lapin
Tumblr media
It was morning in Paris when news of Agnès Varda’s death reached the world. On a hunch, I left the apartment I shared with my girlfriend in the city’s 5th arrondissement and walked the 30 minutes, past the hordes of tourists cramming into the skull-stacked Paris Catacombs, to reach Rue Daguerre in the Montparnasse neighborhood, where Varda had lived since 1951.
This is where Varda and her husband, fellow French New Wave filmmaker Jacques Demy, had purchased a derelict pink storefront and turned it into the production house Tamaris Films, later renamed Ciné-Tamaris, so they could produce Varda’s first film La Pointe Courte in 1954. The pair moved into the tucked-away apartment/studio complex and quickly became fixtures of the neighborhood, spreading art, whimsy, and cats around their tiny world (although the building’s exterior remained in poor shape, with paint perpetually peeling and the roof leaking). For the next nearly seven decades, Varda sightings on Rue Daguerre were an everyday occurrence: “the funny little woman in the red-and-white hair,” as one Parisian described her to me. It was fitting that Varda had inherited the spirit of this street from its original namesake Louis Daguerre: inventor of the daguerreotype, the first commercially available form of photographic imagery and the predecessor to the medium that Varda changed forever.
Tumblr media
So Ciné-Tamaris seemed like the natural spot for a spontaneous Varda memorial. I arrived around 2:30 and a small crowd was beginning to gather, much of them reporters like myself, prowling the block for grieving soundbites. Flowers and handwritten notes already lined the sidewalk. Occasionally someone, usually a woman, would gingerly approach the display bearing flowers of their own; the person would pace along the length of the building for a few minutes, searching for the ideal spot, and then kneel down to place their offering among the others, so that it was visible but not too ostentatious.
Sometimes a person would reach the entrance of Varda’s sacred place and, instead of leaving flowers, ring the doorbell; immediately a young man or woman would answer the door, size up the greeter to determine if they were a close relation, and then beckon them inside, and you could make out just a glimpse of the entryway, the same one that all the lucky folks who interviewed Varda here over the years love to describe, with the prowling cats and the assorted found objects and the maze of different rooms connected by that entryway.
Others were drawn to the crowd but didn’t know what had brought us all here. “What’s going on?” one man asked me, and I answered that Agnès Varda had died. He gave a blank look; no idea who that was. I tried to explain, with my horrible French, that she was a famous Nouvelle Vague filmmaker, one of the last of her generation, but this too prompted no reaction. So I named the first title that came to my mind, which also seemed the most likely one for a Frenchman unfamiliar with the Nouvelle Vague to have seen – “Visages Villages” (Faces Places), the quirky 2017 documentary she had made with the muralist JR, in which the two had toured the countryside making art installations out of the folks they met in small French towns. It was a surprise worldwide hit, although it divided hardcore cinephiles I knew, some of whom thought the film was too cutesy and JR too posturing. At any rate, the man didn’t recognize the name. But he solemnly nodded all the same, to show he recognized someone monumental had passed, and that seemed enough, and he went on.
Tumblr media
JR, as it happened, was presenting a massive new art installation at the Louvre that weekend. He’d covered the entire expanse of the museum’s outdoor Pyramide structure with his trademark screen-printed tarp to create an optical illusion of it rising out of a deep ravine. The effect was short-lived. Within 24 hours the tarp was being ripped up, both intentionally and not, by tourists, reminiscent of the scene in Faces Places where JR pastes a photo of Varda’s friend Guy Bourdin onto the side of a beach bunker and the tide washes it away.
Unlike her very young cohort, who often creates tactile public displays he knows will fade from view in short time, Varda herself was committed to something like the opposite: using her camera to make impermanent things permanent, to capture unusual people and their dissonant dreams on film before they faded away for good.
***
Another passerby, an older woman, was a longtime neighbor of Varda, having lived on Rue Daguerre for decades. She would see the filmmaker around all the time, she said. She most fondly recalled Varda’s 1975 documentary Daguerréotypes, in which she wandered her own street interviewing various shopkeepers and artisans, with a camera and microphone tethered back to her own house. Varda was interested in not only what these folks did for a living, but also what brought them to Paris and what they dreamt about at night. It was the ultimate “good neighbor” act, and also a convenient way for Varda to try to keep up her filmmaking output while raising young children at home.
The artisans of the type Varda profiled 44 years ago—the perfume maker, the magician, the accordion seller—have all but vanished from Rue Daguerre. And though Daguerréotypes never deviates from its pleasantly curious tone to reflect on their vanishing ranks, Varda seemed to be aware even when she was making the film that they were not long for this world. The artisan was a dying, hopelessly outclassed breed in Paris, a city that’s embraced mass-market goods and priced-out real estate like any other. Perhaps, as many critics smarter than I have noted, Varda saw a kinship in her neighbors because she, too, had devoted her life to a craft with no obvious commercial future, one that struck many outside observers as fundamentally useless.
Tumblr media
Of all the commerce on the street today, including a comics vendor and a vegan bakery, I honed in on the most Daguerréotypes-like operation: a tiny frame shop with chipped, weathered exteriors, run by an older woman who kept the front door locked even during business hours. She opened the door for me, but when I asked her if she’d ever heard of Agnès Varda, she gave me the same blank look the man on the street had. “No, sorry,” she said, and shut it again.
Yet there was hope that Varda’s impact will be felt on generations of creative people to come. A young Parisian film student named Valentine brought a carton of seven potatoes to her house. Bending down, Valentine took out a Sharpie and scrawled one letter on each vegetable: “A-G-N-È-S.” She drew a heart on a sixth potato and laid it on top of the others, carefully propping up this tableau in the carton against the wall. The seventh potato was already shaped like a heart, and this one she let stand on its own.
Valentine had been sobbing as she did her work, but she soon grew excited to explain what she’d done. The potatoes, she said, were a tribute to Varda’s 2000 documentary The Gleaners and I, which was the first of her films that Valentine had seen and the one that made her want to make her own. In the movie, Varda had befriended various gleaners across the French countryside, communities of people who scoop up the leftover yield of a crop once it’s been abandoned by the commercial harvesters. More gleaners prowl urban centers looking for discarded food, clothes, and other scraps of life.
A rubber boots-clad dumpster diver proclaims people are “stupid” for throwing so much food away, but Varda’s never been the type to shame an audience. She’s content to open herself up to her subjects’ experiences, to glean what she can from their lives as well as her own (when she trains the camera on her own wrinkled hands and ponders the strangeness of having lived in her skin for so long). There’s a scene where Varda, delighted, gleans her own heart-shaped potatoes and holds them up for the camera: objects which no one else wanted, but which she has endowed with new purpose and clarity. After that film, “my little potato” became a common expression among the Varda family.
All three ethnographies came at very different stages of Varda’s life. She made Daguerréotypes at age 46, Gleaners at 71, Faces Places at 88. But they all concerned Varda’s efforts to ingratiate herself among the people of France, to learn more about life in her country outside of film circles. She was certainly an accomplished crafter of narrative films, as well, but it was with this unplanned trilogy that she enriched her deep bond with fans and ensured her own immortality in the French popular imagination. Besides the obvious fact of Varda’s gender, the strength she derived from simply being around other people might be what most distinguished her from Nouvelle Vague contemporaries like Godard and Truffaut, who only care(d) about the outside world inasmuch as it could be related back to their own vision of cinema. (And in Godard’s case, if that final passage of Faces Places is to be believed, the last one of the originals left standing has become impenetrable to even his oldest friends.)
Tumblr media
Varda was 90 when she died, and much of her output at least since Gleaners centered in one way or another on her own impending death. Hell, as far back as 1962’s Cléo From 5 to 7, which centers on a pop star who awaits a possible terminal diagnosis, death and its effect on the everyday has been a major theme of her work. Thus, most of the gleaners now gathering at her residence were in agreement that today’s news, though heartbreaking, did not come as a surprise. But it did surprise Valentine. “I just saw her last week,” she said. Varda had attended the Paris premiere of her last feature, the career retrospective Varda par Agnès, and Valentine’s film class had been there to see her. The film had held its world premiere at this year’s Berlinale in February, perhaps because Varda knew even then she wouldn’t have made it all the way to Cannes in May.
How did she seem, I asked. “She looked very… tired,” one of Valentine’s friends volunteered. And now, a week later, she was gone. “I thought she was eternal,” Valentine said, shaking her head as though she knew how ridiculous that sounded. “I just wanted to thank her, I guess.”
***
Montparnasse Cemetery is situated just a few blocks north of Rue Daguerre, the final gathering spot of the French intellectual elite. Charles Baudelaire, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir are all buried here. Varda is now here, too, buried alongside Demy, as per her wishes. Their headstone now reads “Famille Demy-Varda.” It’s topped with a collection of sunflowers, another crop of significance to Varda: her 1964 drama Le Bonheur had a sunflower motif, and one of her final art projects was “The Greenhouse of Happiness,” in which she constructed a shack out of 35mm prints of the film and placed fake sunflowers within it.
The gravesite is absolutely choking on flowers, notes, and trinkets. Bouquets hail from the French elite film school La Fémis, cinema giant MK2, various museums, the Paris mayor’s office. Another from the modern tradespeople of Rue Daguerre – today’s daguerreotypes, inspired by her portraits of yesterday’s. The love is so massive it has overflown the cemetery. On a stretch of road just over the wall, the Varda grandchildren had painted every sidewalk post on the block – more than 100 – with her trademark red-and-white bob.
And along the headstone, a ring of potatoes. Varda’s harvest is over. Now it’s time to glean.

TRADEMARK OPPOSITION PROCEDURE IN INDIA
The very first step to getting a trademark registered is to application for it. However, the trademark application has to go through stages of opposition in order to receive approval from the Registrar. It is important to clear and counter all the claims of the opposition (notice).
The Trade Marks Rules, 2017 provides for the procedure as an extension to Sections 20 to 23 of Trade Marks Act, 1999.
Section 20- provides for the “Advertisement of Application”. The Registrar has to advertise the application in the Journal, once accepted or after an error in the application has been corrected or amended.
Once the examiner has reviewed the application, and has allowed its advertisement, it is advertised in the Trademarks Journal. This advertisement can be seen as an invitation to opposition (if any).
Who can oppose a trademark application?
“Any person can oppose a trademark application once it has been advertised”. It is not necessary for such a person to be a registered proprietor of any mark. He/she can be a purchaser, member of general public likely to use the mark or even a customer.
The only point for having such a light eligibility criteria or no eligibility criteria for that matter, is that the Opponent is responsible for representing not only himself/herself but the public at large and when there are “deceptively similar” in the market, it causes confusion to public, thus affecting the reputation of the existing trademark.
Rules Involved
·       Rule 9- deals with “Issue of notices”. It states that any notice related to application or proceeding must be issued by the Head of office or any person authorised by the Registrar.
·       Rule 39- deals with Manner in which the application must be advertised i.e. in the journal.
·       Rule 42- deals with Notice of Opposition which shall be filed through FORM TM-O. [As per Sub-rule 1]. This rule further states that a fee payment has to be made for each registration under each class of good (of the trademark).
A copy of the Notice of Opposition must be served to the concerned applicants within 3 months by the Registrar.
·       Rule 43- this is an important Rule as it deals with the essential requirements of an opposition Notice.
·       Rule 44- this is the next important step. This rule prescribes that a counterstatement must be filed through FORM TM-O within 2 months from the receipt by the applicant of the copy of the notice of opposition from the Registrar.
·       Rule 45- Within two months from service of the counterstatement, the opponent can leave evidence by way of affidavit as he may desire to adduce in support of his opposition, with the Registrar. He also has the right to waive this provision and not adduce any evidence.
·       Rule 46- the applicant can also adduce evidence to support his counterstatement within 2 months.
·       Rule 47- In case the applicant shows up with evidence then the Opponent must send a reply to the evidence within 1 month.
·       Rule 48- no further evidence can be submitted unless the Registrar deems fit.
·       Rule 50- once opportunity to place evidence is closed the Registrar can give notice of first hearing to the involved parties. Ana adjournment is also allowed if a party presents reasonable cause through FORM TM-M. (At least 3 days before hearing).
If applicant doesn’t show up at the hearing, the application is treated as abandoned and if the opponent doesn’t then application proceeds to registration subject to Section 19 of the Act.
