Blokette core: sporty with a feminine twist

Is this new trend a celebration of football culture or class appropriation?

TikTok has given rise to many ‘core’ trends like ballet, fairy, and gorp but the current ‘core’ which has everyone obsessed is blokette core.

Blokette core is a fusion between the masculine, sporty bloke aesthetic with the hyperfeminine coquette style. Independent label Peachy Den recently dropped a new collection inspired by football and blokette core called ‘Glory Days’. Also, German sportswear company Adidas is collaborating with the famed Florentine fashion house Gucci for another collection.

Blokette Core first went viral due to the World Cup frenzy at the end of 2022, and the hype doesn’t seem to be dying down anytime soon as videos tagged #blokettecore have scored an impressive 19.1 million views on Tik Tok.

The components making up the blokette capsule wardrobe include: oversized football jerseys, vintage Adidas track jackets, micro-minis, denim midi-skirts and baggy tracksuits. For footwear, Adidas trainers like Forum Lows, Gazelles or Sambas are another staple in a blokette’s wardrobe.

Instagram’s favourite It girl and model Bella Hadid is rarely seen without her Sambas, which could be the reason behind a surge in Google searches of her favourite shoe. There’s been a 350% surge in Samba searches during the last three months.

“The thing I like about blokette core is the casualness of it, you can’t really go wrong with it,” said LCF fashion student and blokette fan, Kateleigh Tome.

“As I grew up with this style and was constantly surrounded by it, it’s nice to see that it’s still being worn today.”

Finding the middle ground between femininity and masculinity is the key to achieving the blokette look.

For those wanting to give the trend a go, substituting the laces in your Adidas trainers for baby pink ribbons is a good start, or layering a vintage football jersey over a mini skirt works for those aspiring to be a little more daring. Try adding pastel-coloured bows to your hair for the ultimate blokette badge of approval.

On the surface, blokette core seems like a harmless celebration and feminisation of football-lad culture but can it be argued that this latest Tik Tok trend, is an appropriation of the British working-class aesthetic?

Arguably, blokette is 2023’s spin on the 90s-word ‘ladette’. A ladette is recognised as a working-class girl, with a scruffy attitude. She doesn’t care about the confines of gender roles and doesn’t mind taking a seat at the table at some of society’s most masculine hotspots – the grungier the pub, the better.

The look was first demonised when it first made its way to the social scene in the 1990s, but now its return is welcomed with (a fashionista’s) open arms.

If you need further visual representation of the look, BBC series Little Britain (2005) was filled with characters sporting the look. One of its main characters, Vicky Pollard is arguably the most memorable yet negative representation of working-class women in the media: “Whether nicking stuff from the supermarket or swapping her baby for a Westlife CD, Vicky reacts to any accusation with indignant outrage,” reads the BBC’s synopsis of the series.

Pollard could be seen as harmless fun, but the creators behind her character, two privately educated white men, has triggered social media discussion and perception 20-odd years on.

In 2006, YouGov carried out a survey at Edinburgh’s Film Festival, and found that the majority of participants felt that the depiction of Pollard on screen was an authentic depiction of single, working class mums off screen, according to The Guardian.

In addition, survey participants felt that Pollard  is a manifestation of a ‘chav’.

‘Chav’ is a derogatory term used to describe lower-class people who stereotypically behave in an antisocial way. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the government created a moral panic about chavs, which the media helped perpetuate.

Pollard’s iconic TV wardrobe of a Kappa zip-up, fluffy hair scrunchy, flared joggers and trainers, is a lesson in how to dress blokette, despite the character’s controversy.

However, when working-class people dress in a similar way, society arguably deems them as poor, or indeed a chav.

There is undoubtedly a double standard in fashion as clothes that are seen as trendy and cool on a middle-class white person, are typically seen as cheap and ‘chavvy’ on someone who is working class.

Kateleigh Tome explains: “When I was growing up, blokette core type clothing was what my family could afford at the time. Whenever someone walked past wearing a top from Sports Direct and baggy jeans or trackies I would always hear a comment [from passers-by] how that person is a chav and that you can tell they live in a council flat.”

The fashion industry is notorious for taking elements of working-class life such as clothing and making it palatable for higher social classes.

For example, in the early noughties, Burberry’s check pattern became popular amongst the working class and the classist British press was quick to label the check pattern as ‘chav wear’, making Burberry believe their association with the working class was damaging its image.

As a result, Burberry started to fade the Nova check out of its production line and they discontinued the once iconic Nova check cap, which was worn and loved by working-class football fans, to revoke their association with the working class. The Burberry check was now only featured in five per cent of products.

Fast forward to the late 2010s when the middle class and social elites no longer want to appear wealthy anymore, Burberry released its SS18 collection which was a Nova Check paradise. Now, instead of shying away from sport-leisure, brands are embracing the style, through the art of collaborating: In 2022 Gucci and Adidas created a world-dominating collection and for SS23 the two companies are collaborating again for another collection.

Is it as simple to say then, that working-class style is popular in fashion now because rich people don’t want to appear rich? According to LCF fashion student Saida Mahad, people wear working-class clothing: “To feel like they look like those around them,” and Tome agrees.

“Today, especially on social media, middle-class people are one of the main targets for criticism as they’re sort of out of touch. So, I think what happened years ago to working-class people is happening now to middle-class people and they’re trying to look less prestige. It’s all about fitting in.”

On the other hand, social media has allowed the fashion world to become more accessible to the working class and they are now able to influence fashion in ways they haven’t been able to before. So, this could be why recent trends have roots in working-class culture.

Now that the working-class aesthetic is loved by the fashion industry, maybe it’s time the industry starts to appreciate the working class people who are trying to finally break fashion’s seemingly impenetrable class ceiling.

SEPTEMBER 18TH

It took me a month and a half. But I was finally able to complete that new art piece! It's still sad, though... Things like this should have taken me a day or two to finish. But because of my health issues and the ignorance people have for the earth, it takes me centuries to do even the most basic tasks. If this summer made living difficult, I can only fear the disasters next summer will bring.

All that matters is that I finished an important piece of artwork in time, and in a few days, most of my problems will be over.

After I was finished studying, I continued on my way to Carmine and Kieran's house in Pokémon Violet. I decided I should battle some Trainers since some of their teams weren't enough to raise my Pokémon's stats.

Where was this Trainer Class earlier in the adventure?

After a few minutes, I finally made it back to Moussi Town.

It's felt like AGES since I last stepped foot in this town.

After I got to Kieran and Carmine's house, I learned that they lived with their grandparents, and I was given some clothes for the festival up in the mountains.

The clothes are nice. But I'm not too keen on the hair.

Don't count on it, Gramps.

Carmine caught up with us and challenged me to a fight. To be honest, they really tried to make some of these guys more challenging.

I didn't expect ANY of her Pokémon to have a held item. Especially ones that aren't berries.

She WAS the one who wanted to fight me. The only person she has to blame for the outcome of this fight is herself.

Sorry. But I'm not one of those people who obsess over girls I'll never have a chance with.

After the match, we were off to the festival. But not before Kieran roasted Carmine.

At the festival, I thought I could buy a new item to evolve my Applin with.

I was immediately disappointed with what I was presented with.

After talking to this one guy, I was given a new pose. I thought this was a regular one I could use anywhere. But it was actually a camera pose that I'll never use.

My disappointment soon turned into excitement as I was introduced to Ogre Oustin'.

It was still a pretty tight score.

Before the festival ended, I met Ogrepon and received its signature mask.

Now that I have the Teal Mask, can I go home now? Apparently not because there's more stuff to comb through.

The next morning, I went with Carmine to talk to her grandpa about Ogrepon and the Teal Mask.

You couldn't sit me through a simple cutscene? This is an RPG. Text is a crucial element in these kinds of things. I have the patience to handle this, you know.

The thing with bkdk is that shippers think that we "antis" can't see or deny that Izuku cares for Bakugou but this isn't true, I'm an anti and I understand that Bakugou is an important person for Midoriya. Sure I dislike this because I don't think he deserves it because he doesn't do anything to deserve it but Izuku cares for him. However, it's really annoyed when they want to erase any other person of Izuku's life like they always talk about Bakugou being kidnapped or him awaking part of the quirks but they forget that Izuku cares and protect all his friends, Midoriya spoke up againts Endevaor for Shoto in the sport festival, same with Shinsou when called Ojiro a monkey, he almost died protecting Kota or destroyed his body for Eri, he lost himself in pain during the war for Gran Torino and Aizawa, he got on his knees with tears for Ochako's speech (this only happend with All Might before), he used froppy style for Shoto. But shippers erase all this moment because Bakugou isn't in it also I belive that Midoriya would loose the control of his quirk for anyone of him friends, if Monoma start calling names to Ochako, Shoto or Iida he would still awake his quirk like we talk about the same guy that almost lost in the sport festuval because Shinsou disrepect one of his classmates.

Oh my god SAME! Its not as if we antis cant see that bakugou is important to izuku. We hate that fact, but nobody of us denys it! For the longest of izukus life bakugou was a big part of it. We know for a fact that izuku tried to stay away from him after the abuse startet, but destiny always made sure that izuku ended up with bakugou in the same class. From kindergarten to elementary school to middle school to ua high school izuku always ended in close proximity to bakugou. Never got a break from him! For 12 fucking years izuku constantly had to be with his abuser. For 12 years he had been abused, insultet and made fun of. I dont think “stockholm syndrom“ is the right word, but if there is something similar to it izuku clearly suffers from that. Abuse victims can get used to the shit they have to face every day and pretend not to care (I did that) and get used to their abusers presence. Izuku is literally the most selfless and forgiving (fictional) person on this planet. Only jesus tops him in that! He doesnt care about himself, he only cares about others and yeah that includes bakugou!

And you are absolutely right, izuku cares for EVERYBODY not just bakugou! Lets be real here, if in the war arc someone else had sacrifized himself for izuku no matter if ochako, iida, shouto, all might, aizawa or whoever, izuku would have turned berserk EXACTLY THE SAME! It had nothing to do with that it was bakugou of all people, it had to do with that someone got hurt for izukus sake. He would have completly lost it too it it had been someone else. He already turned apeshit crazy when he saw aizawa and gran torino almost killed in front of him, bakugou was just the tip of the ice berg!

Shippers like to make everything that happens in a story about their ship! Not only bakudekus but shippers in generell. Shipping is the sole reason why there is pretty much no fandom in this world, that isnt a toxic shit hole! Shipping can destroy even the most peaceful fandoms. Look at pokemon for example. Its about a 10 year old kid trying to catch cute monsters and train them to become the best trainer of all time and the shippers fight about with which girl this 10 year old child should end up.... 😰

Izuku loves all his friends equal and while bakugou is NOT izukus friend he also cares for his wellbeing. Everybody of us can see that! Izuku always stands up for others! He freaking wants to safe shigaraki from all for one DESPITE hating him! That alone should tell everybody what a goodhearted and kind person izuku is! He wants to safe a MASSMURDERER and TERRORIST! And while I agree that saving such a person is “questionable“ it fits izukus personality! Izuku hates shigaraki, will never ever forgive him his crimes, but for a moment he saw the crying little boy inside him wanting to be safed! So he swore himself he will. Lets be real here: izuku would even safe AFO (espicially if he is his father), who is literally the personification of the devil!

Izuku is a person that protects and safes EVERYONE, that includes his own abuser and even supervillains with bodycounts in the thousands! So bakudeku shippers dont really have an advantage if izuku is even ready so safe murderers and other criminals! But they have their shipping goggles on and so they make everything about their ship! Izuku is just a tool for their own selfish shipping reasons!

BNHA Modern Gang AU

*I got bored on a car ride and kind of got overexcited imagining and planning out this AU inside my head so uh, yeah. I should also note that I ultimately decided they would not have quirks in this AU*

General Stuff: - I’ll be referring to the gang as Gang X for now - The kids would go to school and everything like normal kids but after school would have gang training (physical and in weapon use (instead of having quirks)  - I want all of the major events of the show to still be incorporated in the AU, in some way - And I want all the kids to have the same personalities and relationships, because its not a BNHA AU if all the characters have different personalities (also I love my babies so) - Everyones “Hero Names” in the show are now their gang names - Instead of striving to become the #1 hero, they’re striving to eventually take over and become the head boss of the gang (at least Bakugo, Deku, and Todoroki are)

School: - So I was imagining the kids would go to a nice private school paid for by the gang - Also a major sports school - It would have mostly normal kids but have 2 classes (in each grade level) filled specifically with the gang kids (like the hero course; the normal kids would be based off the general track in UA) - There are rumors that the school may have gang ties, but no ones ever really been able to prove it - The school nurse (they call her Recovery Girl because it seems like she can take any injury in 15 minutes flat; she even takes care of broken bones and major injuries) and the principal (Nezu; not sure what would be unique about him yet, as he obviously can’t be a mouse in this one) and the gang-class teachers are all aware of the ties to the gang and are in it  - So to properly encompass and justify Class 1-A and Class 1-B’s relationship, I was thinking both classes could also be in sports(maybe volleyball,baseball or basketball(require a lot of  teamwork) but anything would probably work)?(it would be mandatory as physical training and to strengthen their bonds) - I can’t decide whether I would have Class 1-A be varsity and class 1-b be JV of the same sport or both varsity of different sports. 

Support Course/items: - So.... this wouldn’t be an extra class physically in school, but the kids training to work on support items would go to the same private school - Hatsume is still the prodigy - Support tailors weapons and sometimes clothing/other stuff to fit specific people  - Like they can tailor a specific gun to fit your hand, and can lower how much the gun kicks. They can do the same for knives, tailoring them to be the perfect length and weight for the user, as well as fitting perfectly in their hands. This goes for all weapons as well

“Gang Training”: - This is basically training to be able to be a competent gang member (most kids that get into the private school end up being higher ups) - They do basic physical training (I mean in hand-to-hand combat it helps to be strong, but also to handle the kick from any gun) but also with basic weaponry - The guns they use for training look, feel and have the actual kick of the gun they’re using but only actually shoot paintballs (Mr. Aizawa is a tough teacher but it’s not very rational to kill off all of your students lmao) - They train with all kinds of guns and ammunition, to get a feel for what each one is like and what they like. Aizawa requires them to train with all anyway though, as he believes you should be able to pick any random gun off the ground and shoot it with perfect efficiency and aim.  - There’s safety measures for swords and knives too, but I haven’t trained with those so idk what those would be lol 

All Might: - I was imagining he would be the boss, or head of the organization, since he’s #1 hero (at least in the beginning) - Like in the beginning of the show, he is secretly sick from an old injury and can only fight for so long before he starts coughing up blood.  - He’s still revered as not only the best gang leader ever but also one of the most amazing fighters the underworld has ever seen - But, as he gets older he still needs to find a worthy successor, as he’s definitely not immortal - Believes the boss should still be actively involved in the gang, fighting alongside his men and while some people think it’s foolish, everyone respects and likes him more for it 

All Might & Deku: - Obviously, Deku is still his secret chosen successor (or the one he wants to succeed him anyway but it will, in the end, go to the best candidate no matter what) - Deku was (distantly), probably through his father who’s in America, related to Gang X. His grandpa told him about it before he died, and all about All Might, the most impressive man in all the underworld, and has wanted to be just like him ever since - Soooo......I’m not entirely sure about how this part should play out, but I’m thinking maybe Deku was sick? And just couldn’t afford the really expensive procedure? (I’m pretty sure in the show Deku is middle class? So we’d keep it that way) - He by chance meets All Might and asks if he could ever be like him, even with his sickness, and All Might says no - Not sure what would go on to change his mind, but something happens, and All Might decides to pay for Deku’s hospital bills, heal whatever was going on, and personally start physically training him. Probably would make him clean up the whole ass beach still lmao - After the “entrance exam” (the physical part which happens after the standard school written at a secret location), Deku gets in by the skin of his teeth

Endeavor&Todofam: - uhhhhhhhhhhh........ - So he’s always wanted to be gang leader, but has always been behind All Might - He’s even tried duking it out with the boss a couple times but never wins - Not sure if I would make him head of the second most powerful branch of the gang or second in command - Either way he still not-so-secretly hates All Might, although he does grudgingly respect him - Wanted to become better than All Might, not get the top spot from All Might weakening, so he’s still pissed when All Might has to retire and he’s technically the boss now  - So, I haven’t been able to decide what Rei had that Endeavor wanted(since no quirks) but I still want it to be a fucked arranged marriage. Maybe she came from “good bloodlines” (like notoriously strong and smart /or people, whether her family was arranged in gang stuff or not) or maybe she was just very pretty and when she refused him, he literally bought off her parents? - Still raised Touya and Shouto specifically to be All Might’s successor - Touya still wasn’t good enough for some reason and something happened to him (weak bones maybe?) and he’s still dead in this AU (or is Dabi whatever the truth really is) - Rei still had a psychotic break and burned Shouto’s eye with boiling water and is in a hospital

Top 10 Heroes:  - So I want the top 10 heroes to either be the leaders of the 10 branches of the gang, or the top 10 members of the gang (they have a council or something)

Work Studies: - So in my old high school we were allowed to have a work study class, where we left campus for that hour and worked somewhere of our choosing, - Work studies were a big part of character development in the show so I’d like to keep those if possible - To make things less suspicious, work studies are required for all students (I mean let’s face it of entire classes all had work studies and others didn’t it would be weird). Also, since it’s a nice private school, I can totally see where they’d want the kids to go out and have “real world experience” before leaving high school - I would probably keep the fact that first years typically don’t have work studies (our school didn’t let freshman have them) but they’re trying something different this year - Of course the gang classes would be sent to various gang members (I think they’d still get to choose who, but idk maybe it would be more interesting if the teachers chose for them? - The general classes would go to whatever work study of their choosing, probably based on the careers they want to go into

Sports Festival:  - Literal school sports festival  - Limited only to those school students, i think - Gang members interested in work studies would come watch and scout - Would it be as internationally famous as the UA sports festival? i dont know tbh

Summer Camp & The Wild Wild Pussycats: - Not sure if here they would be purely working on physical ability and maybe martial arts or on weapons and stuff too - It would depend whether or not the Pussycats knew about the whole gang thing(or if they were involved in it) or were just regular physical trainers with no connection or idea about the gang thing - Kota......I think I would have his parents die in a gang-related accident and, obviously, hate anything to do with gang activity (which is normal anyway). If the Pussycats were not gang-related I’m not sure how the whole Deku-saving-him thing would go down but oh well - The League of Villains would be attacking still, to kidnap Bakugo (for whatever reason)

League of Villains (Gang Y) & All for One: - In a world where there are no “heroes” and “villians”, they obviously can’t go by that name (I mean I guess they can but I feel like that would be kind of stupid and odd) so we’ll go with Gang Y, for now - All for One can’t be immortal in this one, so maybe the gang name just keeps getting passed on from successor to successor? Or he’s just stupidly old(like 100 years old and still kicking ass)? - So, in the underworld, obviously no one is really “good” so to speak, I assume Gang X would still be involved in basic drug deals and stuff like that, but think Gang Y would be involved in some really fucked up shit. Like slave trade stuff maybe? Blood money? - Gang X and Gang Y have been top rivals since both of them started (around the same time) - Gang startup story would be the same as the beginning of the AFO and OFA rivalry in the show (2 brothers with different ideals) - AFO still ends up in jail after the legendary battle in Kamino Ward  - So......I’m having trouble with Shigaraki’s backstory since quirks aren’t a thing. Like obviously it would still be a horrific accident but.....yeah you get the point (haha it sucks trying not to spill manga spoilers) - Toga’s backstory would pretty much be the same I think - Spinner would have some deformity or something (since he can’t be a lizard) justifying his backstory - Twice is hard for the backstory thing.....but I would still have some traumatic event that caused him to do the contradicting voices thing - Nomu’s would maybe be like, brainless humans? Still look like flesh and blood humans but essentially be brain dead and only do what AFO tells them to do? Not sure but I’d still like them to be the result of human experimentation. - In Kurogiri’s case.........not sure tbh we’ll work on it  - Speaking of Kurogiri, he is like, get away driver/escape artist of the millennia. It’s like him and the rest of Gang Y just disappear into thin air. Even the police have tried to track him but? he’s just....gone? He’s still team mom, by the way, and really the only reason the Gang Y survives tbh (Credit to @tears-of-an-otaku )

Stain:  - Goes after and kills gang members (especially higher-ups) that he deems “corrupt” (ones that sit back and make underlings do all the work; rapers; betrayers; ones that are only really in it for the money; etc) - Puts chemicals on his weapons that immobilize his victims; The blood-type thing is still the same (works longer/better on specific blood-types) - Iida still goes after him for disabling his brother, and Deku finds and follows him, and Todoroki ends up coming as back up. - They still don’t get the credit for defeating him “for safety reasons”

Chisaki & Eri: - From a rivaling gang - Not sure how they find out whats going on but they do - Eri, at the very least, is still severely abused, but it would be cool to be able to incorporate using her blood to make some kind of drug  - Not really sure about much in this story arc tbh it’s so quirk-based it’s kind of hard to incorporate without them :/

The Licensing Exam: - Another sports festival, but this time with other major sports schools - Gang members come to scout as well  - In this one though, the other kids are just competing in a sports festival, but the teachers of the “gang classes” are also watching to determine whether or not their kids are ready to take on more “hardcore”/serious work studies (or even internships), where they would be able to experience what it’s actually like to be in a gang a little more in depth and practice real world fighting (and of course their special skills) - Special thanks to @tears-of-an-otaku for helping me figure this one out!

The Kids: - Like I said I want all the kids personalities and relationships to be the same - Jiro is still super into music and can still play (at least a little bit) a bunch of instruments; She has unnaturally good hearing too.  - Bakugo obviously can’t explode things with his hands anymore but has a dangerous interest in explosives (he was actually recommended to join the Support team but he rudely declined); still tells everyone to die on the (way too) regular; also still has the best reflexes in the class - Deku is super strong. Our sweet boy doesn’t look it but is strong af - Koda, still quiet as ever, is super good with animals (but afraid of bugs) - Momo is super good at designing and creating stuff and is very inventive(can always find a solution to a problem); She was also recommended to help in support but she (politely) declined; Still team mom - Iida’s a great runner (probably best at long distance but good at jump about anything)! Back in middle school, he was an absolute track star, but now-a-days with school, his class sports, and gang training, he doesn’t have time for track as well :( ;Still class president and team dad - Kaminari is still our lovable dumbass but is really good with electronics and wiring anything.  - Shinsou obviously can’t actually mind control, but he’s a super smooth talker and can convince almost anybody to do anything for him, so it can kind of seem like he controls people.  - Kirishima is an icon when it comes to defense training, he can block almost anything. He also never seems to get bruises. The rest of the class lowkey hates him for it because while, at the end of the day, they’re covered in bruises, Kirishima’s got maybe one (but usually not even that). He dyed his hair because he thought it made him took tougher and less boring - Aoyama is still into the ridiculously shiny, which is horrible for stealth practice, but he has this trick where he (maybe with a bracelet or something? Or a belt bc of his iconic belt in the show) can blind his opponent with the light reflecting off the metal and go in for an attack in that moment. It’s surprisingly effective.  - Oijiro may not have a tail, but he still excels at martial arts.He even rivals Bakugo (he might be able to win if Bakugo played by the actual martial arts rules that Oijiro was taught but he won’t) - Sugar makes Sato really energetic really quickly! (and for some reason makes him focus better). He’s still a super good cook and baker - Shouji still wears a mask all the time (he has a medical condition with his mouth that’s kind of gross and tends to scare people). He “talks with his hands” using sign language! He’s been teaching the rest of the class, as Aizawa said it was a very useful skill to have, especially in a situation where they need to be quiet but still communicate. - Hagakure, for whatever reason, is amazing a stealth missions! She’s somehow really good at blending into the background and even Jiro can’t hear her when she walks (unless she’s really focusing on it). Top of her class in it, actually.  - Mineta still isn’t that good in actual battle but is really good at simple immobilization (sorry the only thing I could think of for him even a little bit related to his quirk). - Ururaka (while not as strong as Deku), is surprisingly, incredibly strong. She can pick almost anything up and make it seem like the thing’s totally weightless (even when she’s actually struggling, something Deku can’t do) - Sero is the master of Duck tape really good at fixing stuff! It seems like he can fix almost anything; Him and Momo team up a lot when something breaks (which, in Class 1-A, is surprisingly often *cough* Bakugo *cough*); (Sorry, couldn’t really think of anything for him either but tape=fixing things? maybe?) - Mina is really into chemistry, specifically corrosives and hazardous mixtures. Her and Bakugo once teamed up after school and tried to make something - Aizawa said if they ever teamed up to do anything in the chemistry lab again they were going to be banned from it; Mina still has pink hair - Tokoyami has a pet raven that follows him everywhere-literally everywhere. It was a problem at first, but the school eventually decided to let Tokoyami keep it as long as it wasn’t making a mess anywhere and not attacking students (everyone else is lowkey mad about it like why does he get to keep a pet? Nezu tries to pass it off as an “emotional support bird” but everyone knows that’s bullshit); The bird (whom Tokoyami’s emo ass named Dark Shadow for some reason) can actually attack on cue! Actually, he kind of constantly has to be watched otherwise he might attack someone on the random (it’s happened; he seems to pick up on Tokoyami’s emotions somehow and if Tokoyami gets mad well.....; He has in particular had trouble Aoyama and all his sparkly things); The bird can actually send messages too! Tokoyami refuses to say how or why he trained his bird to do this but since no one expects such an old fashioned way of sending a message, it’s extremely useful for high secrecy messages (and packages; actually the actual gang has used it a time or two, a fact Tokoyami is secretly proud of). (Credit to @agaxso) - Todoroki is, not quite an expert, but has a weird amount of knowledge on arson and burning things (not sure why a gang would really need a skill like this except to burn bodies beyond recognition but Endeavor specializes in it so it must be useful somewhere); He also has an extensive knowledge of using  polyoxacyclobutane mixtures(liquid nitrogen definitely and maybe some other things?) to freeze things at whatever temperature (I think he’d probably shoot bullet-like things out of a modified gun; Freezing the target when it hits. Here’s a link explaining basically how polyoxacyclobutane works); He has practice with the modified gun from training with his father, but his mom was the one that originally taught him how to make and use the bullets properly.(Credit to @agaxso) - Monoma can do anything almost perfectly after watching someone else do it once. Unfortunately, he has a really horrible memory so he only retains the information for like an hour then has to watch them do it again. Still an annoying asshole - Kendo is tough as hell! Specifically has really tough hands/knuckles. The One Punch Man of class 1-B, she is literally known for being able to knock people out in only a punch or two. She once smacked Monoma and he had a wicked bruise on his cheek for 2 weeks. She still maintains that she “didn’t even hit him that hard” - Awase is an amazing welder! He was another candidate for the support team, but after some consideration he declined - Tetsutetsu, like Kirishima, has ridiculously tough skin that never bruises, and has amazing defense - I don’t really know enough about class 1-B to finish this unfortunately - Aizawa and Vlad actually put special time aside for the kids to practice and hone their specific skills and learn how to put them to use in battle. After all, you should use everything you have in your arsenal in real battle, and unique/special “skills” can be extremely useful in battle and often pack the element of surprise and can easily but you above whoever your fighting, (especially if they don’t have any special attacks)

As it turned out, he had, just never like this. Turning around, he came face-to-face with the lead of the production, the one and only Lance McClain himself, standing before him with a curious, perhaps even anxious expression covering his face.

Yay writing prompts!! How about this, if it catches your fancy: Obviously from taking one look at teenage Aizawa we know that he was the kind of emo nerd who wrote moody poetry in a journal. What if he loses the journal one day? What if Mic finds it? What if Mic reads it and thinks the poems would make really good song lyrics?

Oh man this is such a cute idea!

There is nothing, literally nothing more humiliating than this.

He’s searched all of his classrooms. He’s visited lost property, retraced every step through the corridors and stairwells, asked his Art History teacher if they’d seen a dog-eared notebook left on the desk after class. He’s checked, double-checked, and triple-checked his locker.

It’s gone.

He’s spent an hour searching during his study period- because, let’s be real, when has he ever actually used a study period for anything but napping- but it has, apparently, disappeared into the ether. 

It’s completely impossible for it to have just gone. It’s illogical for it to just not be anywhere. Someone must have taken it.

Shouta stops in his tracks the moment this occurs to him, just as he’s leaving Yuuei to head home. The hand gripping the strap of his backpack tightens. His stomach clenches.  

Someone must have taken it.

It’s out of his control now. Someone’s going to read what he’s written, they’ll tell their friends, then they’ll tell their friends and then the whole school will know about his angsty poetry that no one, absolutely no one is meant to read except for him. He can’t do anything to change things now, so it’s probably irrational to feel so mortified, so angry and upset and frightened, but he does. His teeth clamp his mouth tightly shut and he swallows down the panic that is racing through his body.

He hears the sound of someone running behind him. He tries to ignore it, but he’s paranoid enough right now that he thinks they’re running after him, to poke fun of the dumb poetry notebook that no one was meant to ever find or read or-

Those footfalls are getting closer.

“Oi! Aizawa!”

Oh god oh god oh god.

The sound of the gravel grating roughly beneath his trainers sounds loud in his ears. His heart’s beating so heavily it hurts and his face is impossibly hot. Which can only mean he’s blushing furiously from the shame of it all. Which is embarrassing in itself.

Everything is awful. Life is awful. The universe is cruel.

He takes a deep breath, closes his eyes and turns slowly towards-

Yamada Hizashi.

Shouta prepares himself.

“Yo, Aizawa!”

Yamada comes to a stop in front of him. Those sunglasses that he’s constantly hiding behind have been sliding down his nose from running. He pushes them up with his index finger, offering that ubiquitous grin that Shouta’s never been all that convinced by.

“What is it?”Yamada hesitates, but his expression doesn’t change. That big, confident smile. There’s something about it. Maybe if he could see behind those glasses, Shouta could read him better. Then, Yamada swings off his backpack with an entirely unnecessary flourish and unzips his bag. His hand dives in, and re-emerges with a black, tattered notebook. The name label on the front is empty and there’s a juice stain in the bottom right hand corner.

Shouta’s shoulders rise to his ears and he wills his expression to do anything but reflect the internal screaming that’s going on inside his head right now.

“I found it in the corridor outside Art History- you ran off before I could give it back to you, I thought it was better I kept it safe in case someone else found it you know?”

Yamada passes the notebook over and Shouta takes it as calmly as possible. Nothing to see here. Just some really embarrassing, very personal poetry about how ridiculously lonely I am.

And he wants to get out of this situation as fast as possible, so he turns to go without another word. 

“‘Oh hey, thanks, Yamada! No problem, listener, I just did what any good citizen would do, hey, fancy going to the arcade sometime? Sure, sounds great, Yamada!’”

Shouta stops in his tracks- for the third time since he’s tried to leave Yuuei campus today. He turns to look at his classmate with weary, half-closed eyes.

“Thank you,” he says pointedly.

Yamada smirks, and bows theatrically. “Any time!”

Shouta nods stiffly. Tries to escape again.

“You’re poetry’s really cool, by the way.”He spins round and pins Yamada down with a glare. And he doesn’t mean for it to happen, but he activates his quirk and he feels his hair lifting off his shoulders. Yamada throws up his hands in defence.

“Hey, hey- I mean it, it’s really-”

“You read it? You read through my stuff?”

He’s so irrationally angry and unsettled, like a cornered animal. Why in the hell did this guy think it was a good idea to go reading through someone else’s personal stuff? Who was he to-?

“I didn’t mean to!” Yamada gesticulates wildly, throws his head back and presses a palm to his forehead in anguish. “I mean, I saw it on the floor, it’d fallen open on one of the pages- the one about how obsessed people are with self image and- look, I didn’t read any of the others, I swear, man.”

Shouta bristles, glares at Yamada. His hair’s settled back on his shoulders but he imagines- hopes- his expression is still threatening.

“Don’t tell anyone about it.”

Yamada opens his mouth to speak, then shuts it again. Then, “I won’t, I totally won’t. But, like, have you ever thought that you’re a super good writer? You could write really cool lyrics- I like to write lyrics too, but they’re nowhere near as insightful as yours-”

Shouta huffs, a not-quite-laugh. Yamada smiles, a little triumphant. “What’s funny?”

“Nothing,” Shouta says truthfully. “I guess… I’m surprised you liked that poem. If it’s the one I’m thinking of.”

The smile falters. “What do you mean?”Shouta’s stomach plummets. He didn’t think that through. He shouldn’t have said anything. And- oh, no. He’s actually waiting for an answer.

He swallows.

“You’re...” Shouta looks at the boy in front of him. Hair styled to an inch of its life, school shirt unbuttoned so dangerously low that he’s surely been told off for it at least once today, tie loose and sleeves rolled up. The sunglasses that can only be there for show. The painted nails.

“I’m dumb! You think I’m dumb, don’t you?” he exclaims, arms crossing in front of his chest.Shouta opens his mouth, but, classically, Yamada gets there first. Talkative as ever.

“You think I’m one of those people in your poems who only cares about themselves and obsesses over what people think of them, right? Right?”

Shouta doesn’t say anything, but the rapid beating of his heart takes on a different tone- from panic to guilt. He wants to stick his head in the ground and never see the light of day again. Yamada’s fists are clenched at his sides and his lower lip is jutting out like- oh god. Oh god, is he crying?

“I…”

And then he storms towards him. Shouta recoils, leaning back as far as possible without falling over. Yamada pokes him in the chest, not hard enough that it hurts, but it’s enough to make his indignation clear. “I’ve been trying to make friends with you all year! ‘Cause- ‘cause I thought you seemed cool, and I’ve seen how nice you can be, like when that girl dropped her lunch in the cafeteria you went and helped and you didn’t care what anyone else thought- and- you don’t let anyone stop you from doing what you want or being who you wanna be, you just go to sleep in the middle of study period with your weird sleeping bag and you don’t even give a shit because nothing embarrasses you and I thought that was super cool- and- I just wanted to be nice back to you, but all you do is roll your eyes and act like you don’t care! Well- whatever! OK? Whatever! If you wanna be a douchebag, be a douchebag!”

He watches him turn on the spot and charge back towards the school, pulling the straps of his backpack tightly over his shoulders. Blonde hair bouncing with every angry step. And Shouta watches in amazement, because he had no idea anyone even gave him a second thought. He tries to keep his head down, concentrate on getting decent grades. He’s never even tried to make friends, so it never occurred to him that anyone else would want to try make friends with him. And honestly, he’d always figured Yamada’s exuberance around him was kind of a prank. Like those asshole boys who ask out the uncool girls for a joke.

Shouta blinks dumbly at Yamada’s receding figure. And then, suddenly, he stops and turns back. Pouting furiously and frown so deep it’s comical. He’s making his way towards Shouta again.

“Oh. Shit-” he mutters to himself.

“And by the way,” he hisses, when he’s close enough for no one else to hear, “I really did like your poem!’

And then Yamada really does decide to disappear back into Yuuei. 

For someone who doesn’t embarrass easily, Shouta feels pretty ashamed.

When Shouta takes his seat the next morning, Yamada’s already there at his desk next to him. Shouta unpacks his stuff, turns towards Yamada, not really knowing what to say yet. But Yamada doesn’t give him the chance. He turns his chair conspicuously away from him. It makes a grating noise against the floor. Kayama looks over her shoulder, widens her eyes slightly and bites her lip as if not to laugh.

Shouta sighs. He tries to concentrate as their homeroom teacher discusses the Sports Festival with them, but he can’t. The waves of resentment coming from Yamada right now are way too distracting.

Shout tears off a piece of lined paper from his notes.

He passes it to Yamada beneath his desk. The boy double-takes, is painfully obvious as he looks between the teacher and Shouta’s note and the rest of the room before he takes it. Shouta gives him a moment to read it, turns away and does his best not to feel to eager as he waits for him to write his reply.  

He sees the white scrap of paper in his peripheral, and rather more subtly, takes it from Yamada.

Sure!!!! But only if we hit the arcade after :P and call me Mic. That’s my hero name after all!!!!!!

Shouta looks down at the note and feels the ghost of a smile creeping its way to his lips.

Toshi’s hair was still slightly damp as he entered the Common Room.  He’d started the morning early, as he always did, gone for his morning run with Katsumi and Kana Tetsutetsu, then returned to the dorm for a shower and then breakfast.  Tetsutetsu had been asking a lot of questions about Haimawari, which he’d answered as best he could, though he really wasn’t sure what was up with that.   Ah well, if it was important, he’d probably figure it out.

The TV was on and he could see that Izumi and Askuka were watching it.   He could hear a little of it.  “…truck driver found dead this morning, appears to have been murdered sometime last night with no sign of his truck.  Local police are being tight lipped and have not yet named any suspects.  However, the driver did work for a shipping company with numerous government contracts…”

Well, that was a little weird.  But before he could think any more about it, he was interrupted by arms wrapping around him from behind and the feeling of something—no, two somethings—very large, very soft, and very warm pressing into his back.  “Good morning, Toshi!”

It had only been a week, but he still couldn’t believe that Sora Iida liked him.  Liked him liked him.   Enough that last Sunday she’d accosted him when he’d gotten back from his morning run to confess.  And, well, she was pretty and excitable and all kinds of amazing things and he was pretty sure he liked her too.   They were young and figuring this kind of stuff out was what life was all about.  

He didn’t know if she was getting advice from Mika Mineta or if this was just her usual lack of regard for personal space amped up now that they were dating, but he was pretty sure only an idiot would complain about it.  Even if she seemed to be moving kind of fast.  Sora was… really physically demonstrative.  And he wasn’t sure he should be complaining about that, but still, fast.

…He really needed relationship advice, but he was also pretty sure, based on the stories of them in school, that Mom and Dad were not the ones to give it, nor Uncle Shoto and Aunt Momo, or Uncles Kacchan and Eijiro.

Aunt Mina had always said that any of them could come to her with relationship advice too, but he was pretty sure that was a really bad idea.  Maybe Aunt Tsu?  She was definitely the most sensible person in his parents’ class that he knew…

Sora gave him another squeeze.  He gave her hand a squeeze, before she relaxed her grip and let him turn around. She was taller than him by several inches, shorter only than Shoji and Koda.  It puts him at an… interesting level in comparison to her.

Toshi grined.  “Good morning, Sora.”  He frowned, though, when he saw the bags under her eyes, in spite of seemingly brimming with energy.  “How much coffee have you had?”

“Just three…ish cups?” she tried, hesitating as she sees his eyes narrow.  “…From the big mug.”

“Sora,” he said, “we talked about this.  Coffee isn’t a substitute for sleep.”

She crossed her arms and huffed.  “And I’m just supposed to let all my good ideas go to waste!?”

“If it’s a good idea at 2300, it’ll be a good idea at 0800.”

“Now you sound like Father,” Sora said.  “That is not proper boyfriend soundings!”

Toshi held up both hands in a pacifying gesture.  “Okay, okay, okay,” he said.  “No dad-ing. I promise.  Just… maybe ease off the coffee, okay?  I can’t boyfriend if you’re so exhausted you can’t think.”

“…Your statement is not without logic,” Sora admitted.  “I will have to incorporate these new variables!”

How did Uncle Tenya handle Aunt Mei?!   Toshi was in way over his head here!

“All right,” Mister Aizawa said, “settle down.  Before we begin today’s lessons, we have something important to discuss.  The Sports Festival and the work-study week that follows.”

Toshi stole a moment to glance at the back row of the classroom, where Haimawari sat.  He’d been talking his friend up to his dad fairly frequently now, telling him about his drive and his amazing Quirk.  With no heroic background and so many second (or greater) generation students in this year’s crop of first years, Toshi knew that most eyes would be on people with proven legacies and now newcomers to the field. Haimawari was a good guy and deserved whatever kind of leg up he could get.  It didn’t hurt that he was exactly the kind of person Dad almost always picked.

Toshi just hoped the shock didn’t kill him when it happened.

“We’ve had heroic legacies in the Sports Festival before,” Aizawa went on.  “But this is the first year where we have classes primarily composed of the children of active Pro-Heroes, including the majority of the Top Ten.  Combined with the uncertainty surrounding the Quirk Virus situation… needless to say, the eyes of the world will be on this Sports Festival more than any other.”

He fixed the class with an icy glare.  “I am certain your parents are planning something.  I’ve already forbidden them from extending offers to their own children, so don’t think you’re going to coast by.  But knowing them, they’ve already made arrangements to exploit the loophole in that.  However, as your teacher, I have final veto power over whatever offers you may receive.”

His eyes narrowed. “If I catch any of you at the Sports Festival performing at anything less than your best, I will see all offers extended to you declared null and void.  Am I understood?”

“Yes, Mister Aizawa,” Toshi mouthed, along with the rest of the class.

Aizawa seemed satisfied with that, nodding slightly.  He briefly looked down at the lectern to consult a piece of paper.  “Doc Clock has also asked me to pass on the message that if any of you try anything like what Deku or Shoto did at your parents’ first Sports Festival, she will refuse to use her Quirk on you and instead leave you to Recovery Girl’s care.”

A small grin of paternal pride traced its way across his face.

As for the Festival itself, Toshi wasn’t worried.  He was good with his Quirk, though he knew he could be better.  But that pretty much applied to everybody in the class.  Of course, the variable nature of the middle round made things a little more complicated and there was always the possibility of something new…  But there was no sense in getting worked up about it.

No, if anything, it was the Tournament Round that concerned him the most.  What if he had to fight somebody in from the class?  So many of them were his friends, practically his family. He wasn’t sure he could really go all out fighting them.  

What if he had to fight Sora?!

Two weeks.  That’s what they had to get ready for the Sports Festival.  And Toshi was bound and determined to make the most of it.  With Heroics Class replaced by free-training periods for those two weeks, they had plenty of opportunity.  The chance to show his parents, show the world, just how good he could be.

Despite having a dad who was the Number One Hero and a mom who usually ranked somewhere in the low thirties, Toshi did not consider himself having to escape from their shadow. He’d known, almost from the moment he’d decided to be a Hero, that there would be plenty of people who’d think of him as nothing more than Deku’s kid.  And Dad, as the Symbol of Hope, was a standard no one could hope to match up to. They could only do like he did, and follow Dad’s example, and give it his best.

Toshi probably wasn’t going to be the next Number One Hero… but he was going to be the best Hero that he could.  And he was going to help his friends be the best that they could be too.

Which was why he’d taken some time to help Haimawari and Shota, in one of the dojo-style training gyms. Both of them had great Quirks… but neither was the best physical fighter in the world.  Haimawari relied on speed and zooming around, while Shota tended to rely on the raw power of his Quirk when fighting.  Nejire had also managed to take Haimawari out rather quickly when she and the Laughing Man had attacked them during training, though that might have been from the speed and surprise as much as anything else.

Toshi got that.  He was used to using his Quirk to bounce around, rapidly shifting from low to high gravity to bounce around and then hit like a freight train.  But he also knew how to fight without it.  Straight up brawling techniques from Dad, Gunhead-Style martial arts moves from Mom.

He brought up a hand, palm up, and moved his fingers in a “come and get me” gesture.  “Okay, guys,” he said.  “Two of you against one of me.  No Quirks.  Let’s do this.”

Haimawari rubbed the back of his head awkwardly.  “If you say so, Midoriya…”

“Kaaaai-yaah!”  Shota let out a non-supersonic scream and rushed him. Toshi easily sidestepped his purple-haired friend and gave him a small shove, knocking him down to the mats.

Haimawari was slightly more cautious, throwing a few careful punches that seemed more designed to test him that to actually connect.  With his long arms and legs, Haimawari actually had pretty decent range.  If he could get a little power going behind them, he’d be pretty effective.

Toshi tossed off a jab of his own, probing Haimawari’s defenses.  He missed and Haimawari actually managed to take him, striking him in the face with a blow.

He instantly pulled back, even as Toshi was seeing stars.  “Oh, oh, no, Midoriya, I didn’t mean…”

Toshi just laughed.  His opinion of Haimawari as a fighter obviously needed revising.  “Why didn’t you tell me you could hit like that?”

“That was awesome!” Shota piped in, none the worse for wear in body or spirit from his tumble.  “Only people I’ve seen hit Toshi like that are Kirishima-Bakugo and Tetsutetsu!”

Haimawari looked a bit embarrassed, chuckling nervously.  “It’s nothing, just something my dad taught me, that his mentor taught him. From, ah, from when he was doing a neighborhood watch kind of thing.”

Something about the way he said that made Toshi think there was more to the story, but he didn’t really want to press it.  It wasn’t like he wasn’t privy to secrets that he wasn’t allowed to share.

“Seriously, though,” Toshi said.  “I thought you said you didn’t know how to fight without your Quirk.”

Haimawari laughed nervously again.  “More like… I don’t want to?  I don’t like the idea of hurting people, especially for something just like showing off like the Sports Festival.  Guess what I really need is psyching up.”

Toshi punched the palm of his other hand.  “Okay, mental conditioning.  We can work on that.”

He looked over at Shota. “You… on the other hand…”

Shota looked a little embarrassed.  “Yeah… I might need a little more help.  Dad says it wasn’t until Uncle Shota started mentoring him that he really got any kind of good at fighting.”

“Well,” Toshi said, “I’m no Eraserhead, but I’ll do my best…”

Fortunately, it got better from there.  Haimawari was better than he’d expected going in, even after that first punch.  There was a lot of wildness to his punches and kicks, but even without his Quirk, he was fast and had plenty of reach.  If he combined that with his Quirk, getting in a few hits and then getting away, and repeating that, he’d do great against anyone with a short range Quirk.

Getting Shota to actually think about his moves before going all in was really the hard part, and once he got past that, it wasn’t too bad.  He wasn’t going to be as good a fighter as Uncle Hitoshi was, but at least he wouldn’t be breaking his hand if he punched somebody at the Sports Festival. And they still had two weeks.

Shota was bent over, hands on his legs, struggling to breathe.  “I’m okay…  I’m okay…   I’m pretty sure I’m okay…  The room was always spinning, right?”

“Take it easy, dude,” Haimawari said, guiding him over to one of the benches and helping him sit down. He got Shota’s water bottle and handed it to him.

“Small sips, Shota,” Toshi told him.  “Don’t overdo it.  You’ll just throw up.”

Shota reluctantly complied; Toshi could tell he’d been ready to guzzle it.  “This… gets… easier, right?” he gasped.

Toshi nodded. “Eventually.  We’ll try and do a little endurance work too.”

“Don’t know if I’ve said it, but I really do appreciate this, Midoriya,” Haimawari said, taking a drink of his water.  He was sweating and breathing hard, but not nearly as badly as Shota.  He was actually in pretty decent shape, probably because his Quirk was more of a physical one.  But he was built like a runner, not a brawler, so what he could do was a little different.

“Happy to help,” Toshi replied.  “We’re all in this together, after all.”

“Not worried I’ll take your spot at the Festival?  Me and Dad watch it every year… it gets pretty competitive.”

Toshi waved it off. “Nah.  I’m gonna do my best, you’re gonna do your best, that’s all that really matters.”

“How do you think it’s gonna go, Toshi?” Shota asked, no longer panting.  He looked a healthier color too.  “I bet you’re gonna win it!  I mean, Uncle Deku did his second year and third year, and he’s your dad, so he probably taught you everything, even if your Quirks are kinda different, and…”

“I really don’t know, Shota,” Toshi said, a little bit quickly.  Sometimes, you had to fight to get a word in edgewise with Shota. “Everybody’s got really great Quirks, not just us, but in the other classes too.  And there’s always a surprise or two in the General Studies classes. Especially since we don’t know what the first two events will be.”

The first event was usually something that required covering distance and the second was always one that required teams, but that was about the only parameters that could be guessed. Toshi had seen everything from obstacle courses in the first to Quirk-backed games of dodgeball in the second and there wasn’t much predictable pattern to it.  

He held out his hand, pam to the ground.  “But when it does, we’re gonna be ready for it, right?”

Haimawari put his hand over Toshi’s.  “Right.”

Shota did the same. “Right!”

“You three done nerding it up yet?” a voice from behind asked.  Toshi turned to see Katsumi and Kana Tetsutetsu.  

“I have yet to reach maximum nerd,” Toshi said, smirking.  There’d been no malice in what she’d said.  Katsumi just had to get everyone a hard time.  It was just who she was.  “Hey Tetsutetsu.”

“Hey yourself, Midoriya,” Tetsutetsu said.  

“Yeah, yeah,” Katsumi said. “Well, make yourself useful and come show me some of those moves Aunt Ochaco taught you.  Bring the Loud Kid too.”

“Shota.  My name is Shota.  You know that, Kirishima-Bakugo!”

“Sure it is,” Katsumi said. “C’mon.”

Okay, something was clearly up.  He and Katsumi sparred sometimes, but she never just flat out asked him to show her any moves.  Did this have anything to do with what Tetsutetsu been asking about this morning? Was… was Katsumi being her wingwoman? For Haimawari?

This was a day for the record books.  

“Yeah, sure, I can do that,” he said.  “C’mon, Shota.”

Shota, however, clearly wasn’t picking up on the subtext.  “I don’t think I can fight anymore, Toshi,” he said, stifling a yawn.

“Then watch and learn, Loud Kid!”  Katsumi shouted.

“Why don’t you come along,” Toshi said.  He might as well play along with this.  If only to get Katsumi out of having to play wingwoman any further.  “Tetsutetsu, don’t think you’ve met Haimawari?  You could probably show him some moves I can’t.”

“’Probably’?” Tetsutetsu asked.  “You know I can, Midoriya.  Nice to meet you, Haimawari.”

“Likewise,” Haimawari said, smiling.  He looked like he knew something was up, but couldn’t figure it out.  He offered Tetsutetsu a hand and she shook it, leaving him massaging his fingers afterwards.

Just a couple weeks into school and everybody was jumping into relationships.  He was hardly one to talk, of course, but it still amazed him. Especially for all of them that had known each other for most of their lives.  But here, away from their parents for the first time, maybe they were just figuring out who they wanted to be.

“Watch and learn, Loud Kid,” Katsumi said.  She bounced lightly on the balls of her feet, hands up in a fighting position, before launching a powerful right hook.  It was her signature move and she always telegraphed it.  Toshi’d also been on the receiving end of it many times when sparring with her.  Even when you could see it coming, Katsumi was fast.

Fortunately, he had time to dodge, and return fire, coming at Katsumi with a few quick jabs.  She got her guard up though, deflecting his blows easily.  “Gonna have to do better than that, Toshi,” she said, with a wicked grin.

Toshi dropped low, sweeping his leg.  He knocked Katsumi down, but she was right back up before he could capitalize on it. He dodged her return strikes, shifting left and right rapidly.  “Didn’t take you for the type to play wingwoman,” he said.

He blocked her next strike and even that stung like hell.  “All I did was get you two out of the way,” she replied.  “I wanted to spar with you anyway.  If I can help out a friend, I can put up with a little lovey-dovey nonsense.”

Toshi knew she’d been turned down by Izumi after confessing her long buried feeling.  That had to have hurt some, but she seemed to be plowing through it in her usual fashion.  Which was not dealing with her more complicated emotions.  Which probably wasn’t healthy.  But all he could do was be there for his friend.

His friend who’d nearly taken his head off with her follow-up punch!   He got his head out of the way, but she connected solidly with his shoulder.  He grunted, firing off rapid fire punches in return that she deflected, until he altered his pattern, two right hand blows one after the other instead of a left and a right and felt his fist connect solidly with her chest.

Katsumi winced and backed off, keeping herself light on her feet.  Laughing, she said, “Did you just bunch me in the boob, Toshi?  What would your girlfriend say?”

Toshi’s eyes went wide for a second, before he recovered.  “Very funny,” he said.  Typical Katsumi, always trying to get a rise out of him.

They exchanged more blows, hammering away, deflecting, retreating, and coming back at each other. But without Quirks, they were just too evenly matched with each other for there to be a clear victor.  Katsumi was probably stronger, but he was just lighter enough on his feet to make up for it.   With both of them realizing that, they took a step back and exchanged boys.

Shota broke into applause. “That.  Was.  AWESOME!  You gotta show me how to do that!”

Katsumi just laughed. It wasn’t a cruel laugh, but he could tell she didn’t really believe Shota had much of a chance in a physical contest.  “Stick to what you’re good at, Loud Kid.  Scream your way through.”

An idea occurred to Toshi and he had to turn away for a moment to hide his grin.  “I don’t know, Katsumi, I was going to get Shota up to speed anyway, but if you don’t think you can train him good enough, I guess I’ll have to do it…”

The glare she shot him was worth it.  “Oh, hell no. I didn’t say I didn’t think I could.” She snapped her fingers, then pointed at Shota.  “I’m gonna train you until your arms fall off, Loud Kid!  That’ll show you, Toshi!”

Toshi had to hide his grin again.  Shota would get the training he needed and Katsumi would have a goal she could work on to keep from dwelling on things.  If you knew what you were doing, helping your friends wasn’t too hard.

And he was going to do his best to make sure every one of his friends had a chance to shine.

Lupin the 3rd vs. Detective Conan (2009)

Lupin the 3rd vs Detective Conan (Hepburn: Rupan Sansei V?sasu Meitantei Konan) is a Japanese animated crossover television special between the Lupin III and Detective Conan series. It was broadcast on Nippon TV on March 27, 2009. Discotek Media released the television film on DVD in North America on October 27, 2015.

Plot Queen Sakura, sovereign of the European kingdom of Vespania, is killed while out hunting. All indications suggest that she was accidentally shot by her son, Prince Gill, who immediately commits suicide, overcome by guilt. The title of heir to the throne of Vespania passes to Princess Mira, a girl who rejects the throne because she thinks that she's not the rightful heir. The coronation ceremony is threatened by a growing popular movement that believes Princess Mira is unfit to govern. Duke Keith, the chief of Commons, makes Daisuke Jigen, former trainer of Vespania's regular army, a personal guard of the princess. Simultaneously, Arsène Lupin III reaches Vespania; his and Jigen's plan is to get their hands on the crown for the Queens of the Realm.

To increase the princess' popularity, a trip around Japan is organized. A festival is held at the Grand Hotel West City Tama, which Kogoro Mouri and Conan Edogawa attend. At the party, Conan exposes an attempt to poison the princess. The princess wants nothing more than to escape from her condition, so in the confusion that follows, she sneaks away. Conan notices this, and follows her.

The Princess meets Ran Mouri, who is returning from evening classes. She notes an uncanny resemblance in their appearance, and decides to trade places with her. Ran, dressed as the princess, goes back to the hotel and explains what happened. Duke Keith, to avoid a diplomatic incident with Japan, forces Ran to continue to play the role of Mira. Duke Keith breaks his promise to return Ran after a press conference at the airport, and brings her to Vespania. Conan, who noticed what Duke Keith was doing, boards the plane, and is saved from hypothermia by the Duke. Desperate to save his daughter, Kogoro is aided by Inspector Megure, who calls in a fellow police academy graduate, Koichi Zenigata. Since it has been learned that Lupin has traveled to Vespania, Megure arranges for Kogoro to officially accompany Zenigata as his assistant to apprehend the master thief.

In the meantime, Mira is collected by Fujiko Mine, who knows her identity and offers to take her around Japan. Conan tracks the princess and chases the pair on his skateboard, but Fujiko loses him and disappears. Meanwhile, hidden beneath the kingdom is a mineral that thanks to its "complete stealth powers" may be totally invisible to radar. Using dowsing rods, Lupin locates the mineral and appropriates a piece of it to help him facilitate his theft of the crown.

Princess Mira has since returned to Vespania. Fujiko was hired by Duke Keith to remove the princess from court life to make her feel, at least for a while, the typical teenage experience, which helped her overcome her earlier cynical, fatalistic attitude. Mira, after visiting the place where her brother and mother died, decides to assume her duties as future queen, and agrees to return to the palace. Lupin later enters the vault of the building, and finds out that the crown has already been stolen by Fujiko. He is forced to give up and flee the building with Goemon Ishikawa XIII's aid when it is surrounded by police after an alarm sounds.

After meeting with Ran and Kogoro, Conan begins to investigate the murder of the Queen with the involuntary help of Jigen. After Conan and Kogoro have concluded their investigation, Conan tries to put Kogoro to sleep with a tranquilizer needle, but fails to hit Kogoro (who is actually Lupin in disguise), and hits Zenigata instead, who wakes up again after only a few seconds. Lupin reveals his secret identity to Conan, and helps resolve the case by pretending to be the true Kogoro. Together they reveal the truth: The murder of the queen is the work of Duke Gerard Musca Vespaland, Queen Sakura's own brother and the Prime Minister of Vespania. Gerard had also killed the prince, making the case seem to be a murder-suicide. His plan was to ascend to the throne himself, and to get rich from selling the ore the Queen had forbidden to mine, due to its potential to be used in war and her love for nature, which would have been destroyed if excessive mining had taken place.

Thanks to Conan and Lupin, Vespaland is apprehended, and Princess Mira becomes the new queen of Vespania, after Lupin returns the Queen's crown to her. Ran and Kogoro are welcomed as saviors of the kingdom, and Zenigata yearns for yet another fight with Lupin. Conan is taken in a car by members of the Japanese embassy, who are really Lupin and his gang, who have decided to help Conan return to Japan due to Conan's lack of a legal identification. Lupin explains that he returned to Vespania to honor a promise he made to Queen Sakura. He knows the true identity of the young detective, calling Conan Shinichi Kudou, while Conan promises them that if one day they cross paths again, he will definitely arrest them all. The film ends with Conan and Fujiko taking a ride on a borrowed submarine back to Japan, during which Fujiko begins to very closely "investigate" the effects the APTX-4869 had in transforming Shinichi Kudo into Conan Edogawa.

Writer’s Month 2019

Day 7: Word Prompt: sports

The locker room was abuzz with noise as the all of the girls in Hoshiko’s year got themselves changed and ready to take part in their sports festival. Everyone was excited, pulling tight on their shoelaces and tying back hair into secure updos as they gossiped about the events and who would win, and about which of the boys would be the dreamiest. Everyone enjoyed the sports festival, except for Hoshiko.

           She had learned early on that she was not very athletic and that the sports festival often brought her more embarrassment than celebration. Currently, she was in the corner of the room, clenching her toes in her trainers and pulling her long hair back into a high ponytail as she stared at a spot on the ground next to her feet. This was where her best friend had found her.

           “Hoshi-chan?” Hoshiko glanced up at her friend’s face. “Is everything alright?” Akabane Kokoro was the closet friend that Hoshiko had. Ever since they were kids, they had been close. They had met in the playpark; Hoshiko had been playing on the slide when some older children started giving her a hard time until suddenly, a little girl with firey orange pigtails had burst in and scared them away. Kokoro had introduced herself and then jumped into an enthusiastic speech about how she had to help because her dads had taught her to stand up for others. This led to them developing a connection over how they both were the children of same-sex couples. They grew up together, both becoming protective of each other as they started school and found themselves in the firing line of other children who didn’t always understand why their families were different. “You don’t seem that excited for today? I thought you liked school events?”

           “I do, but not the sports festival.”

Kokoro started to nod, as she said “Oh, yeah.”

Suddenly, there was a knock on the locker room door and they heard a teacher’s voice call out, telling everyone that it was time to start making their way out to the track to start the festival. Hoshiko and Kokoro grabbed their water bottles from their bags and filed out of the door with the rest of their year.

“I wonder how overboard my mum is gonna go, this year?” Hoshiko remarked absently.

“It’s Izumi-san that gets really into this stuff, right? I can’t imagine that Hiragii-san would go to so much effort. Except at New Year’s, I suppose?”

By this point, the girls had reached the door leading out to the track and field. Hoshiko nodded at Kokoro, “Yeah, Mama-Kaga isn’t the problem. She just wants to come and be a supportive mum. Mama-Kona, however, wants to make it some big event, probably so she can talk about it on one of her streams.”

Suddenly, as both girls made their way out onto the field, a loud cheer rose from the crowd and a chant seemed to build around them. They looked over and managed to spot Hoshiko’s mums standing near the edge of the crowd. All around them were people that Hoshiko recognised – relatives, family friends and colleagues of her parents.  They were all being so loud that they were garnering the attention of the other parents and relatives spread across the field.

Hoshiko tried to shrink behind her friend but suddenly found that a video camera was being shoved into her face, with her grandfather-Izumi standing behind, grinning widely. “Smile, Hoshiko! You’re on camera!” Hoshiko frowned and shoved her hand over the lens and pushed it and her grandfather away. She then quickly pulled Kokoro over to stands.

“Your family is weird, Hoshi-chan.” Kokoro laughed. In the background, they could see that Konata was addressing the crowd, shouting orders. A group of females – dressed kind of disturbingly in cheerleading uniforms – came to the front of the group. Kagami, meanwhile, had the decency to look ashamed of her partner. Hoshiko felt slightly better from the sympathetic look her mum sent her.

The cheer squad got themselves into position, allowing the girl to take stock of who her mum had managed to rope into her scheme. Mostly, it appeared to be a bunch of cosplayers and streamers and Konata ‘worked’ with, but it looked like Aunt Tsukasa and Miyuki had also – probably – been bribed into helping. Hoshiko let out a groan as she hid her face in her hands and as the cheer squad started a routine, using pompoms and batons and funky dance moves all at once.

Each year, Konata seemed to try and outdo herself when celebrating her daughter’s achievements. Of course, it had started small, with party poppers and enough balloons to float a car, but gradually it grew larger and larger. The previous year, during the sports festival, Konata had had bullhorns, a couple of ribbon dancers and had blared music from a speaker when Hoshiko had gotten up to do anything – it made for a very awkward toilet trip.

Hoshiko looked around, hoping desperately that security would get things under control soon. However, the security just seemed to be amused by the situation. And before, Hoshiko could run down and beg her Mama-Kona to stop, the one of the teachers in charge of organising the events, blew their whistle and called the first group of students down.

As the races progressed, Hoshiko was thankful to see the cheers settled down, as well as to see the cheer squad had a number of different routines which they performed for the kids in different races, from all classes. They called out encouraging words of hope before the gun went off, they cheered when the first person crossed the finish line and for the last person. It became a joyous cheer for everyone.

The atmosphere surrounding the festival was so positive and lively, that Hoshiko almost missed the call for her race. It was only when Kokoro nudged her out of her seat that she made her way down from the stands. As she lined up on the starting line, it sounded like the cheers got louder, the cheer squad bucking up into another, energetic routine.

Just before the starting gun, Hoshiko glanced over at her parents. They smiled widely, arms wrapped around each other as they called out, “Good luck, Lucky Star!”

Hoshiko smiled and, as the gun shot, she ran.

Celebrate Mother's Day with the Greatest Moms in Anime!

It’s that time of year again, folks: Mother’s Day. The time when all of us can come together to celebrate motherhood in all its forms. Mothers come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Some have one mother. Some have two. Some are biological. Some aren’t. Who among us doesn’t have “the Mom friend” in their friend group? I once saw a woman who described herself as “a single mom with no kids” in her dating profile and by golly, folks, that one stuck with me.

  It takes a lot to be a mom—and even more to be a good one. And trust me, I know a good mom when I see one. As a fan of both anime AND moms, I feel truly blessed. There are TONS of great moms out there in anime. I’ve already wished my real mom a happy Mother’s Day, so now it’s time to celebrate with my other moms: the best moms in anime.

    Inko Midoriya - My Hero Academia

    A favorite anime mothers list that doesn’t lead with Inko Midoriya is a list I don’t wanna read. Inko Midoriya is who anime moms should strive to be. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this mom. Every step of the way she takes complete pride in her son Deku and his accomplishments. Even when her son faces immense danger and painful injury, she doesn’t waver in her support. At the same time, she never devalues her own feelings. She’s never shy when it comes to voicing worry and concern over her son’s safety. She chastises both him and his mentor for his recklessness when they deserve it. She reminds them that there’s more to being a hero than simple self-sacrifice, because there are people like her who need them to come home safe and sound. She’s perfect, and I want to give her a hug.

  Tosen Shimogamo - The Eccentric Family

    It takes a lot to be an amazing mother, but luckily for this one being human isn’t a requirement. Matriarch of the honorable Shimogamo family of Kyoto tanuki, the untimely passing of her husband made her solely responsible for raising the next generation of Shimogamo tanuki. Luckily for Yasaburo and his three brothers, their upbringing couldn’t be in better hands (er, paws). The Shimogamo family’s pride lies both in their unwavering pursuit of fun and in the close ties that bind them all together. When she’s not dressing up like a prince and dominating the local billiards clubs, Tosen comforts and guides her children with the unconditional love only the best of mothers can provide. 

  Lisa Lisa - JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

    Some moms show their love and dedication by coming home from a long, stressful day at work and still taking you to soccer practice. Some moms show their love by throwing you into a big, oily pit and telling you to climb out or die. Lisa Lisa is the latter. While not a Joestar by birth, their fates became intertwined when she was saved from a boat full of rampaging vampires by Erina Joestar as a baby. She later married into the Joestar family, mothered a son, and ultimately suffered the same fate as Erina—her husband was killed by a vampire. Having learned Hamon from her adopted father, she got her revenge on the vampire who widowed her and gave up her son to go into hiding. She became a master Hamon user, and years later her son Joseph would unknowingly seek out his own mother to teach him. Though her methods might seem harsh, her training gave him the tools necessary to once and for all defeat the Pillar Men menace together. Finally reunited, they could be the family they had always wished to be. Smart, beautiful, and tough to boot, on a scale of one to ten this mom is a fifty. 

  Sakura Uchiha - BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS

    Sakura has a special place in the hearts of many anime fans as one of the only mothers they got to watch grow up and become a mother in front of their very eyes. Though a young girl at the onset of Naruto many years ago, Sakura has since grown into a fine mother raising her own shinobi daughter in the ongoing series BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS. With her husband Sasuke largely absent on secret missions, Sakura is tasked with being one of the villages best fighters, medical practitioners, and sole caretaker for her daughter. She does it well though, assuaging her daughter’s anxieties through her unshakeable trust in Sasuke and doing whatever it takes to defend her daughter in times of need. She’s living proof that shinobi moms can truly have it all.

  Izumi Curtis - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

    It might seem a bit cruel or ironic to put Izumi—a woman whose greatest weakness was caused by her inability to have children—she is without a doubt the greatest maternal figure in the Elric brothers’ lives. Like the Elric brothers, she had dabbled in human transmutation following the death of her baby in childbirth. As a result, she lost several internal organs and the inability to ever have children. She later took in and trained the Elric brothers, who had undergone a similar ordeal after the death of their mother. Though a tough-as-nails fighter and trainer, Izumi’s naturally caring nature helped nurture the Elric brothers into two of the best Alchemists and fighters in the nation. She’s as much a fantastic mother as any others in this list. 

  Kobayashi - Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid

    Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is an anime all about a bunch of misfits coming together and forming their own little family in Tokyo, and Kobayashi happens to be everyone’s favorite tired, working-class stepmom. Having already had her loner lifestyle thrown out of whack when a maid who is also a dragon shows up on her doorstep, her life further complicates when a young dragon named Kanna inserts herself into Kobayashi’s life. Despite being hundreds of years older than Kobayashi, Kanna is still very much a child as dragons go, and begins seeing Kobayashi as a mother.

  The show is full of cute scenes between the two, and one of my favorite episodes in the series spells out their mother-daughter dynamic in pretty explicit terms. A harsh crunch period at work means Kobayashi can’t come to the sports festival at Kanna’s school. Kanna gets upset, and Kobayashi struggles to reconcile the way Kanna sees her with the off-hand approach her own parents took raising her. It’s an incredibly touching episode, and watching Kobayashi open up her heart a little more to her newfound daughter solidifies her as one of the best moms a tiny anime dragon girl could ask for.

  Bulma, Chichi, and Android 18 - Dragon Ball Super

    So far I’ve tried to stick to one mom per show, but when it came time to choose which Dragon Ball mom was best, I couldn’t bring myself to do it. They’re all great. As is the tragic fate of great moms everywhere, they never get the credit they deserve. Take Bulma, for example. She took a genocidal villain hellbent on destroying the earth and turned him into a family man. Not to mention the fact she—the smartest person in the world—invented time travel to save not one but TWO timelines from destruction. Speaking of which, without Android 18, Universe 7 would never have been able to win Zen-oh’s tournament and multiple universes would’ve been annihilated.

  Finally, there’s Chichi, who receives the brunt of maternal disrespect. Sure, she nags her husband and kids, but put yourself in her shoes! All she wants is a good life for her family, yet she can only watch as they put themselves in harms way time after time. How many times has she seen her husband die? Too many! Also, let’s be real here, Goku doesn’t know what a freaking kiss is. That woman has had to endure decades married to an absolute beefcake who won’t even kiss her. Who among us wouldn’t have a little pent up frustration after that?

  Of course, these are just a few of all the wonderful moms that the we’ve been blessed to meet while watching anime. I know I’ll be thinking of each and every one of them, and I hope you will be too. So take the time today to wish your local mom a happy Mother’s Day, then kick back and watch some anime together.
