Katya is more than her relationship with Sofia, guys. She has her own ambitions, goals, desires, and yes Sofia is one of them, but she also craves power, autonomy, strength. Her relationship with Goncharov is equally meaningful even though she spends much less time around him because you can tell by their exchanges that much as she views Sofia as a desirable partner, she views Goncharov as almost... an idol? A role model? She admires him, clearly, in a different way than Sofia. She wants to have Sofia; she wants to be Goncharov, or at least the conception of Goncharov she has in her head. Obviously there’s some degree of disconnect there; she seems more focused on his past than who he is today, and her conversation with Andrey betrays that, I think. But that doesn’t change the fact that Katya is chained by her role -- as a woman, as a character. I think there’s something interesting to be said about Katya’s relationship with gender because of that, but I’m not ready to get into that, I need to reflect on it more.

I had a dream that Matteo JWHJ 0715 had actually made a film before Goncharov, in 1965, called Venus Rising, and that it was about two women who had escaped to France together to step away a cycle of violence and found that they’d taken it with them but then met a young woman they wanted to shelter from it and it was about a yearning for femininity and the desire to protect innocence and that it was sort of taken for granted within the queer community that it was Matteo’s “coming out” as a trans woman.
