Japanese Media that Helped Me Come Out
Hey, I wanted to make a post about the shows and movies from Japan that really helped me come to terms with my identity and made me more comfortable with coming out (even if I had a few early aborted comings out before I had real support). Before I begin, a special shoutout has to be given to Ranma 1/2, the first anime I ever saw that involved gender changing content.
Tumblr media
I think one of the first foundationally important bits of media for me was Sailor Moon, the original animated series. Or more specifically season 5, Bishouji Senshi Sailor Moon Sailor Stars. This is a series I watched shortly after the episodes aired in four episode blocks at a time on rented VHS tapes from a local Japanese Electronics Store in Dallas, Texas. (R.I.P. Orbit Electronics).
For those not familiar with the series, this season introduces three major new heroic characters, the Sailor Starlights. In their civilian identities they are a boys idol group called The Three Lights and go by the names Seiya, Yaten and Taiki but in their heroic identities they are three women named Sailor Star Fighter, Sailor Star Healer and Sailor Star Maker.
Tumblr media
The idea of three women hiding themselves in the guise of men was so fascinating to me and spoke to something deep down inside of me. This may be the reason why Sailor Stars is the series I decided to purchase on Laserdisc back when it was coming out.
Tumblr media
The second major anime series from this time that was foundational for my exploration of who I am was 1997's Shoujo Kakumei Utena.
Tumblr media
This is a series all about defying societal expectations especially of gender roles and sexuality. It's an amazing if sometimes very couched in metaphor and symbolism coming of age story about a young woman who refuses to conform to her expected role and seeks to become a Prince to defend others. It also contains dialogue like this:
Tumblr media
Which, if you are familiar with Trans terminology just holds so much extra meaning. For those who do not know, trans people who have not come out yet are often referred to as eggs, as in they have not come out of their shell yet. Lastly is probably both the most obvious and most ridiculous entry here. the 1999 Rock and Roll, Zombie, Alien Invasion film Wild Zero. This is a movie about the rock band Guitar Wolf, their biggest fan Ace and a zombie apocalypse started by aliens (think Plan 9 from Outer Space but somehow even more wild and ridiculous and with an amazing soundtrack). In the movie, Ace meets and falls in love with a beautiful girl named Tobio.
Tumblr media
However, as Ace discovers, Tobio has a penis. This causes him to have a bit of a crisis until his idol, Guitar Wolf appears before him in a bathroom to bestow these words of wisdom upon him.
Tumblr media
So yeah, this movie helped me in some very strange ways when it came to accepting who I really am, even if it took YEARS for me to finally crack my shell for real and come out publicly. So, thanks for reading this and thanks for all of your support.

A History of Transgender Characters in Comics, Games and Animation
The Sailor Starlights (Sailor Moon Sailor Stars, 1996)
A trio of mysterious Sailor Guardians – Sailor Star Maker, Sailor Star Fighter, and Sailor Star Healer – arrive on Earth in search of their missing leader, their own solar system having been destroyed by the unstoppable evil known as Galaxia. They adopt human identities, posing as a boy band called the Three Lights. As Galaxia’s influence spreads to Earth, the trio become drawn into Sailor Moon’s efforts to protect the planet from harm.
---
Sailor Moon was never shy about exploring notions of gender and sexuality, but its final season, featuring the genderfluid Sailor Starlights, was quite possibly its queerest. In the original manga, the Starlights were shown to be women adopting male identities, but the anime took the idea further, asserting that the characters had distinct male and female forms, and switching from one to the other involved a physical transformation. The Three Lights were male, but the Starlights were female.
When airing in North America, previous seasons of the show had been stripped of LGBT content: characters’ genders or relationships were altered in order to make the show’s world more heteronormative. This final season was not translated along with the others, and it’s widely speculated that the Starlights were the reason, as there was simply no amount of cuts or rewrites that would be able to obfuscate their genderfluidity. And thus, in its final season, Sailor Moon finally became too queer for America.

@its-decido asked so I shall deliver. Here are all of my gender and sexuality headcannons for Sailor Moon.
For reference I ship Michiru x Haruka, Rei x Minako, Inners poly pile, Ami x Makoto, Mamoru x Usagi x Seiya, Kunzite x Jadeite, Chibiusa x Hotaru, and Princess Kakyuu x Reformed Galaxia. The only ships I have strong feelings against is anything that breaks up harumichi and anything involving Prince Demande bcuz he sucks ass and doesn’t deserve love.
Usagi is bi with a preference for her precious Mamo-chan. She/her, potentially some cutesy neo-pronouns.
As the goddess of love it only makes sense for Minako to be pansexual. She/her.
I think Ami would be demiromantic and demisexual. Not really sure of she’d like multiple genders or just girls. She/her, but might try out she/they at some point.
Makoto is bi. She crushes on everything that breathes within a ten mile radius of her. Preference for guys and more masculine girls. She/her, I think trans girl Mako headcannons are super cute.
Rei is the man hating lesbian straight men fear. In the manga, she makes it clear that she hardly tolerates the existence of men, so I doubt she would date one. The 90s anime always felt really weird, so I’m calling it internalized homophobia (she went to Catholic school after all). She/her or maybe she/they, purely out of spite for this world.
Chibiusa, much like her mother, is bi and in love with everyone. Even horse boy gets a kiss. She and Hotaru are canonically the same age when she is reborn. It’s not problematic, you just don’t like it. Which is fine, but chill out a little. She/bunself, it’s the 30th century, her using neo pronouns is entirely realistic.
Michiru is literally the biggest lesbian to ever lesbian. I get vibes like she has mommy AND daddy issues. There’s no such thing as a mentally well artist after all. She/her.
I can see Haruka as being non-binary or a cis woman. Lesbian, potentially bisexual (NOT biromantic), with a heavy preference for ladies. Anime Haruka absolutely has some kind of religious trauma. All she talks about is going to hell for her sins. She/they (maybe ze/zir).
I stand by Setsuna being aroace. The Endymion thing felt like filler, and all she ever talked about was his lavender jacket. Next season, her only outfit is a lavender jacket (I distinctly remember her wearing a lavender tee shirt in Crystal as well). She’s even stated to be an aspiring fashion designer. Clearly she was just jealous of his suit. She/they/it, because as an eternal being this gender shit is probably pretty pointless to her.
Hotaru is some form of gay. Lesbian, bi, pan, no idea. All I know is she has a massive crush on Chibiusa. She/it, she probably has some crazy depersonalization going on with Mistress 9 and the cyborg stuff.
Seiya, Seiya, Seiya. I get heavy trans masc vibes from them, but Naoko did say all sailor senshi were women, so I’m going with the in-between of non-binary and/or genderfluid. As for sexuality, I’m just going to leave it as sapphic. She/he/they/ze. Do they even have gender/pronouns on Kinmoku?
I refuse to see Yaten as anything other than a aroace girly girl. Yaten forever chooses sleep over sex . She/her.
Taiki confuses and upsets me to no end. The hair makes it so unbelievably painful to think about them that I leave my thoughts at pansexual they/them.
Kakyuu is bi, and all loving like Usagi, our other princess. She/her.
Manga Mamoru is the token straight friend. Anime Mamoru is bi purely because of the Fiore arc. He/him.
feel free to request a continued analysis of the genders/sexualities of minor characters and villains, other headcannons, along with my list of which villains are redeemable (all monsters of the day will be included, you have been warned)

LGBTQ+ History in the Avatar World
So pretty much everyone in the Avatar/Korra fandom knows by now that Korra and Asami are together and are officially bi. And most people have also probably seen those pages from the Korra comic Turf Wars where Kya explains in brief how the four nations regard same-sex couples. But I recently went on a deep dive on the Wiki and found out a TON more, a lot of it coming from the Tabletop RPG, Avatar Legends, which is all official cannon due to Avatar Studios’s involvement in its development. So I figured I’d compile it all in one post.
And as this is going to be a long post with pictures, I'll be placing everything under a "Read more."
Air Nomads
Tumblr media
Air Nomads just didn’t care about sexuality. Love is love and love is good. Even though Air Nation kids were pretty much raised communally, they did know who their parents were, and sometimes those parents were two dads or two moms.
This open-mindedness also extends to Trans and Non-binary air nomads. I believe this means that since the North and South temples were primarily inhabited by men and the East and West by women, individuals could chose to stay at whatever temple they felt comfortable at for their identity.
Characters: -Rioshon, a nun from the Western Air Temple in the era of Roku. She fell in love with Princess Zeisan of the Fire Nation while teaching the princess how to chi-block. More on the Princess later. NPC from Avatar Legends. -Bo, a non-binary trainee in airbending during the Era of Roku. They are a pre-generated PC for Avatar Legends. -Enuk, a non-binary member of the Southern Water Tribe who gained airbending during the Harmonic Convergence. After gaining airbending, they left the Water tribe to join with the new Air Nation. Pre-generated PC for Avatar Legends.
Water Tribes
Tumblr media
The Water Tribes are a bit... complicated in regards to gender and orientation. As Kya states, same-gender attraction on its own generally isn't too much of an issue, as long as it stays behind doors. Or, rather, tent flaps if you're in the South. Additionally, arranged marriages were the norm in the Northern Water Tribe until at least the end of the 100-year war, so attraction often didn't even play a role in marriage.
Even though people generally weren't disowned for same-sex attraction, the Northern Water Tribe's strict ideas of gender roles did lead to at least one trans waterbender to be rejected by her family.
According to Avatar Legends, in response to Korra's relationship with Asami, Chiefs Desna and Eska officially decreed that gender plays no role in who can or can not marry each other in the Water Tribes. They have received some pushback, but they make a point to attend same-sex weddings to make their stance clear.
Characters: -Korra, of course. Bi, having been attracted to both Mako and Asami. -Kya, the one narrating the panels I'm using in this post. She mentioned bringing home at least one girlfriend to meet Katara and Aang. -Makittuq, the trans woman waterbender I had referred to, from the era of Roku. While her family and other members of the Water Tribe didn't accept her and understand her desire to live as herself, she found company among the spirits. She was an accomplished healer and was happy to teach the skill to any waterbender, and developed a method to calm dark spirits. She's an NPC in Avatar Legends. -Massak, an inventor from the Southern Water Tribe in Roku's era who worked with her girlfriend (who happened to be Fire Nation) on ships intended to help with trade between the North and South Water Tribes. An Avatar Legends NPC. -Qanitt, a non-binary chieftain from the Southern Water Tribe in Roku's era. Avatar Legends NPC -Taiki, a trans man who wished to make a name for himself during the 100-year war, though the war ended not long after he had a chance. The Avatar Wiki says he's both from the Northern tribe and the Southern tribe, and since I don't have the books officially, I can't check which is correct. He's a pre-generated PC.
Earth Kingdom
Tumblr media
The Earth Kingdom is probably the nation we know least about in terms of how they see and respond to LGBTQ individuals. However, the Earth Kingdom is also the largest and most diverse of the four nations, so different areas could have very different views.
There's at least one Earth Kingdom town in which same-sex marriage is recognized as of near the end of the 100-year war.
Characters: -Kyoshi is bi, as shown in the comic panel and expanded on in the novels. -Mingxia and Meilin are from the comic Suki, Alone. Mingxia was a friend of Suki's who left Kyoshi Island, and when the two were reunited, Mingxia introduced Suki to her new girlfriend, Meilin. -Zenko, his husband, and their daughter are from the comic Origami from Team Avatar Tales, showing that same-sex marriage was recognized in at least one Earth Kingdom town. -Junyi was a blacksmith who fell for one of his clients, and the two men planned to run away together until his client's wife found out and that's all I'm going to say here. He's an NPC from Avatar Legends, from the Roku era. -Hua was a member of a gang within Ba Sing Se after the 100-year war. She tried to steal from Rose, the daughter of a pair of diplomats, but the two ended up falling for each other instead. Both are Avatar Legends NPCs. -Xiao and Yuxuan are both non-binary pre-generated PCs from Avatar Legends. Xiao is from the 100-year war era and Yuxuan is from a bit later, in Aang's era.
Fire Nation
Tumblr media
Going to break up my format a little bit, because I want to talk about this panel here and some new information that shines new, unflattering light on this decree by Sozin.
I mentioned her earlier, but Fire Lord Sozin had a sister, Princess Zeisan. As is family tradition apparently, Sozin and Zeisan were constantly pitted against each other, but Zeisan was born without bending. She sought out the Air Nomad, Sister Rioshon, to teach her chi-blocking, and the two of them fell in love.
Fire Lord Sozin outlawed same-sex relationships while his own sister was in love with a woman.
Honestly, I'd love to see more of Princess Zeisan's story. She seems like a VERY interesting character based on what the Avatar Wiki has from Avatar Legends. What I wrote here is just a tiny piece of what we know of her.
Other characters: -Rangi, Avatar Kyoshi's girlfriend from the novels. -Nyn Chei, Massak's girlfriend and partner in developing ships, until Massak broke things off with her when she realized their designs were being used for the Fire Nation's fleet. Avatar Legends NPC from Roku's era. -Dalja Ro, non-binary leader of the Fire Navy relief fleet in Korra's era. They attended the Fire Nation Royal Academy for Girls as a kid, but they realized that they didn't exactly feel like a "girl". With the help of their classmates, they were able to figure out who they were. NPC from Avatar Legends. -Sunlin, a nonbinary orphan from the 100-year war era. Pre-generated PC from the quickstart of Avatar Legends.

Casting Kpop: Sailor Moon
Just a little post to explain the idols I picked, with the flagship series of this blog, Sailor Moon.
Now people have chosen idols to be the Sailor Scouts before but I wanted to do something a little bit different with my choices.
In addition to the idol’s personality and appearance, I wanted to take age into account. For example, Tuxedo Mask being significantly older than Sailor Moon.
It’s not perfect, Sailor Moon’s pick being the oldest of the Inner Senshi is definitely not expected, but I still like how it all came together.
Sana (Twice) as Sailor Moon
Starting with the titular character, I made the most cliché choice because sometimes the most obvious answer is the right one. Sana started out with a cutesy ditzy klutzy image but she later matured into an elegant yet still cheerful young lady, just like Usagi. The iconic Cheer Up MV, where she cosplays as Sailor Moon, combined with her affinity for pigtails, buns, blonde hair and shades of pink and purple, Sana embodies Sailor Moon perfectly.
Binnie (Oh My Girl) as Sailor Mercury
When I went down the list of female idols known for short hair, few have rocked it as well and as long as Binnie. Also, Ami has a demure gentle vibe and Binnie presents those traits very well in MVs like Closer.
SinB (Gfriend) as Sailor Mars
As queen of the resting bitch face in kpop, SinB is the only idol who can capture the aloof mystery of Rei in the manga and the fiery feistiness of Rei in the anime.
Eunbin (CLC) as Sailor Jupiter
CLC as a whole has the sweet yet tomboyish edge of Makoto but Eunbin really has the look, particularly her tall height and wavy brown hair.
Yeri (Red Velvet) as Sailor Venus
With her occasional blonde hair and affinity for the color orange plus her quirky outspoken personality, Yeri was born to be Minako.
Jin (BTS) as Tuxedo Mask
Worldwide handsome himself just had to be one of the biggest heartthrobs in anime history, not only does Jin have the suave charm and good looks to play Tuxedo Mask, he has the snarky sense of humor to pull off the bickering couple dynamic Mamoru has with Usagi.
The Rest
In regards to the outer senshi, Hani (EXID) is extremely intelligent like Pluto, Moonbyul (Mamamoo) is androgynous like Uranus and Solar (Mamamoo) is sophisticated like Neptune.
Chibi Moon and Saturn were the biggest examples of how age came into play when picking the idols. Honestly I don’t know much about Na Haeun and Takara (Busters), I just know they have the look and feel of Chibiusa and Hotaru respectively.
For the Sailor Starlights, it was simply a choice of female K-Pop stars known for boyish haircuts. Amber is the most iconic androgynous idol ever so she had to be the leader of these trans icons, Seiya, Choa is the most feminine, Yaten, and Cheetah is the most mature, Taiki.
Symbolism
Sailor Moon’s choice being Japanese/foreign is representative of Sailor Moon’s country of origin and the franchise's global reach.
The power couple of the franchise, Mamoru and Usagi, is formed by a member of the biggest boy group, BTS, and the biggest girl group, Twice, in modern K-pop.
Binnie’s zodiac sign is Virgo just like Sailor Mercury.
Jupiter and Venus joined the team significantly later than the first three senshi, Eunbin and Yeri were also later additions to their respective groups. Yeri in particular is the fifth and final member of her group just like Venus.
The picks for the first three Outer Senshi are all intertwined, obviously Moonbyul and Solar are in a group together and often shipped with each other, but Hani and Moonbyul are both part of the famous “1992 club” while Solar has collaborated with Hani.
Music Videos/Eras for Reference
Twice’s Cheer Up-duh
Twice’s Fancy-Sana with blonde hair and pink/purple aesthetic like Sailor Moon.
Oh My Girl’s SSFWL-Binnie appears in icy location, Mercury’s element.
Oh My Girl’s Dun Dun Dance-Binnie with Mercury’s signature blue hair color.
Gfriend’s Apple-SinB dancing in front of fire, Mars’ element
Gfriend’s Mago-SinB wearing a red bodysuit, Mars’ signature color.
CLC’s Helicopter-Eunbin wearing a green dress and pink nail polish, Jupiter’s signature colors as well as reddish brown hair.
Red Velvet’s Red Flavor-Yeri with long blonde hair and scenes of her wearing an orange dress, Venus’ color
BTS’s Boy With Luv-Jin’s killing part with the rose, Tuxedo Mask’s signature item/weapon.
EXID’s Hot Pink-Hani with green hair like Sailor Pluto.
Mamamoo’s Um Oh Ah Yeah-Moonbyul’s presenting a masculine look and Solar swooning over her, representing Uranus and Neptune’s romance.
Final Roll Call
Sailor Moon-Sana (Twice)
Sailor Mercury-Binnie (Oh My Girl)
Sailor Mars-SinB (Gfriend)
Sailor Jupiter-Eunbin (CLC)
Sailor Venus-Yeri (Red Velvet)
Tuxedo Mask-Jin (BTS)
Sailor Chibi Moon-Na Haeun
Sailor Pluto-Hani (EXID)
Sailor Uranus-Moonbyul (Mamamoo)
Sailor Neptune-Solar (Mamamoo)
Sailor Saturn-Takara (Busters)
Star Fighter-Amber (f(x))
Star Maker-Cheetah
Star Healer-Choa (AOA)
