Nobody gets to dictate your gender identity to you. That includes members of the trans community as well. . Certain factions of this community - trans women themselves - will repeatedly insist trans women are "male bodied" and "biological males". They will insist on using outdated terms like "MtF" to refer to the community, and if you push back they will tell you that you're wrong. . Whether you are transgender yourself or not, this is a form of transphobia. . It's also a losing battle. . You can refer to yourself as a biological male as much as you want, but that's not going to endear you to conservatives. They're still going to hate you babe regardless. . But also, what do you think your constant misgendering of yourself is doing to your psyche? How do you think viewing trans women as "biological males" will colour your ability to be an ally to your community? . I am a biological woman with a woman's body. Let's talk about the meme of white trans women having had a "nazi phase". This is seriously not okay. . White trans communities in general have a significant problem with racism, and it's stunning to see how many white trans folks are oblivious to this. Just about every trans person of colour I follow has described feeling othered because of their ethnicity in trans spaces. If your feed is excessively white, you have to do something about that - white people aren't the only people in the trans community. . How do you think openly joking about having had a "nazi phase" is going to help foster a sense of community? How do you think trans people of colour are going to react to seeing that not only are there former nazis in our midst, but that they feel comfortable enough to openly talk about it? . Now look, people can change and nazis can be rehabilitated. I have to believe that, otherwise the idea of prison abolition makes no sense. . But if you treat your "nazi phase" as anything other than a stain on your soul that you need to commit for the rest of your life to removing, you need to give your head a shake. . Having a "nazi phase" isn't cute or funny, it's deeply fucked up, and the fact that it's actually a meme is even more fucked up. . How do we short circuit control? . How do we push back against the expectations the world has of us? How do we live our lives peacefully but while following what we know our purpose to be? . And what's more, how do we honour that journey in others, even when we don't understand their path ourselves? . I don't understand xenogenders. I don't understand people who consider themselves to be transgender, nonbinary, or both but who choose not to medically or physically transition. But I don't have to in order to honour the fact that they're pushing back against the oppressive and hateful realities we all deal with. They're creating space for themselves in a world that demands they conform. . They're short circuiting control. And it's beautiful. . If you see people who don't present in a traditional binary way and find yourself shaking your head, ask yourself what your goal is. Do you want greater freedom and respect for all who stand outside the traditional gender binary, or do you just want it for people who look like you? . The first century CE Roman writer Valerie's Maximus wrote a collection of Romn historical anecdotes. In his work, he describes a situation in the year 77 BCE where a slave named Genucius was set to receive an inheritance. . Because Roman law, however, was written in a way that described how men and women could receive inheritances, and Genucius, being a eunuch priest of the goddess Cybele, was neither a man nor a woman, they could not receive their inheritance. . On the surface that seems pretty terrible, and understandably so. But if you look closer, you might recognize that as actual legal recognition of a third gender in a western society that predates Christ. .
