When somebody tells you that you've misgendered them, the cool guy response is to apologize, move on, and not do it again. . The absolute worst way to respond, on the other hand, is to write a long response explaining why they're Wrong, Actually. . Yeah this is a cis people thing, but it's also something I've noticed truscum - that is, trans people who insist that gender dysphoria and medically transitioning are necessary to be considered transgender - doing quite a bit as well. . It's weird to watch fellow trans folks succumb to their cisnormative biases so much that not only do they misgender me - by directly and repeatedly insisting I have a "male body" - but themselves as well. . But that's not misgendering, they will explain to you. It's just simple biological reality that trans women are biological males, they will explain to you. And you can take hormones but you will always be a biological male, they will explain to you. . Where have I heard that one before? . I wish those of us in the trans community could be kinder to each other. I don't know what truscum hope to accomplish by focusing their ire on their fellow trans people, when there are so much more significant and tangible threats to both them and us. . After a lot of thinking this is also going to be an 18+ space. In his work, he describes a situation in the year 77 BCE where a slave named Genucius was set to receive an inheritance. . Because Roman law, however, was written in a way that described how men and women could receive inheritances, and Genucius, being a eunuch priest of the goddess Cybele, was neither a man nor a woman, they could not receive their inheritance. . On the surface that seems pretty terrible, and understandably so. But if you look closer, you might recognize that as actual legal recognition of a third gender in a western society that predates Christ. . Why do I bother posting these essays every day? . I'm aware that my feed isn't the most exciting from a visual perspective. A lot of other trans women are far more interesting in their photography choices than I tend to be (except when I get to see the wonderful @wutography and she takes some great photos of me). . But that's okay - I clearly put more thought into the written bit than the photos. . My life is pretty boring, overall. I don't say that to be self deprecating, I really don't mind that that's the case. But part of why I do what I do on here is to portray a different sort of life for trans people. . When I was growing up, the only examples I saw of trans people were either porn stars, or the mentaly ill men in dress trope that permeates the media even today. . Now we have trans celebrities, and that's cool, but it's still not something a lot of us can see ourselves in. Not everyone aspires to be a celebrity, and in some ways they're hard for me to relate to. . Me? I'm just a boring chick who makes her living online and writes a lot. But if I'd seen someone like me doing what I'm doing when I was younger, I might have figured out I was trans a lot earlier and saved myself the regret of 30+ years living as the wrong gender. . Nobody gets to dictate your gender identity to you. That includes members of the trans community as well. . Certain factions of this community - trans women themselves - will repeatedly insist trans women are "male bodied" and "biological males". They will insist on using outdated terms like "MtF" to refer to the community, and if you push back they will tell you that you're wrong. . Whether you are transgender yourself or not, this is a form of transphobia. . It's also a losing battle. . You can refer to yourself as a biological male as much as you want, but that's not going to endear you to conservatives. They're still going to hate you babe regardless. . But also, what do you think your constant misgendering of yourself is doing to your psyche? How do you think viewing trans women as "biological males" will colour your ability to be an ally to your community? . I am a biological woman with a woman's body. I am not a cis woman, but cis women don't have a monopoly on biology. . How do we short circuit control? . How do we push back against the expectations the world has of us? How do we live our lives peacefully but while following what we know our purpose to be? . And what's more, how do we honour that journey in others, even when we don't understand their path ourselves? . I don't understand xenogenders. I don't understand people who consider themselves to be transgender, nonbinary, or both but who choose not to medically or physically transition. But I don't have to in order to honour the fact that they're pushing back against the oppressive and hateful realities we all deal with. They're creating space for themselves in a world that demands they conform. . They're short circuiting control. And it's beautiful. . If you see people who don't present in a traditional binary way and find yourself shaking your head, ask yourself what your goal is. Do you want greater freedom and respect for all who stand outside the traditional gender binary, or do you just want it for people who look like you? . When people in your life are being transphobic, they aren't even always being purposely malicious. Sometimes, as misguided as they are, they genuinely do have your best interests at heart. . That doesn't mean it's any easier to deal with. . After all, it's easy to just write somebody off when they're obviously hateful and cruel. That's why baby jesus gave us the block button on the seventh day of christmas. But when you can tell somebody genuinely wants the best for you and they're entirely wrong about it, it's more complicated. . That said, you are under no obligation to live your life according to somebody else's will, nor must you take every single piece of advice that comes your way, regardless of how well meaning it may be. . Your parents, your friends, your spouse, whomever - they might not want you to transition. But if you know it's right for you, what they want doesn't matter. . So how do you deal with people who, well meaning though they might be, try to impose their will on you? . You thank them for caring - truly, genuinely, because in their own ignorant way they do care - and then you ignore their advice and do it anyway.
