So I’ve seen some posts about how ppl can’t wait for the girls to eat coach Ben but I really hope they don’t because if they do it will fundamentally change the story and it’s characters.

@misty-caligula made a post talking about how the show subverts the expectations set by the pit scene in episode 1 of season 1. Initially we the audience are expecting a violent slasher, a supernatural ghost story. We create a boogie man of sorts with the antler queen (a character we the audience name) but throughout the course of the show our initial beliefs are challenged we come to empathise with these girls we care for them and their relationships.

They allow Jackie’s body to freeze in the meat shed for months before they eat her. they were never planing to eat her and when they do it’s not just due to physical hunger but emotional hunger. Shauna eats Jackie’s ear because she wants to be close to her she wants to keep a part of her with her, inside her. The first act of cannibalism is brought on by grief in quite private moment.The other girls don’t eat Jackie until Shauna tells them she would want them to. Though Jackie was unable to assimilate to the wilderness and was an outsider of sorts. She loved the Yellowjackets in her dying moments she hallucinated them comforting her and saying they loved her. Eating Jackie was an act of love. A way for Shauna to grieve, a way for Jackie to finally contribute to the group.

Then you have javi who died risking his life to save Natalie and again the cannibalism begins with an act of grief. Travis carefully cradling his heart before forcing him self to eat it raw. an act of love and penance. Shauna had to blind her self to be able to cut him up, forcing herself to separate her friend and her food.

In the show cannibalism becomes an act of love. An act of sacrifice. They agree to these rituals and rules, agree to risk their lives to feed the rest. Yes they’re afraid when they’re chosen but they knew the risks and played along anyways because they live each other. When they’re killed they become one with the rest of the group they become a part of each of them.

Coach Ben doesn’t have this love for the group. He teaches them how to hunt and butcher animals simply because he needs them so HE can survive because he can’t do it himself. Not because he cares about their survival. He sleeps in a room separate to the rest doesn’t pray to the wilderness or go the seance. The only one he has any relationship with is Natalie and that relationship is severed at the end of season 2. Coach Ben will never willing let himself be sacrificed he won’t play by the wilderness rules in the name of fairness. If they kill him it will be murder not sacrifice. It’ll be brought on by rage and revenge

Which I feel takes away from the point of the show. These girls aren’t monster or a coven of witches. They’re scared hungry girls simply trying to keep each other alive by any means.

travis gobbling up javi's raw heart feels almost like a way of reclaiming what is his, as if to say I understand the situation and I understand why we are doing this but he is and always will be mine, my brother, because I carry a part of him inside me in a way that no one else does. you can eat his flesh, his guts but I have his heart. he is mine and always will be.

anyone else desperately hoping we see natalie and lottie get closer or kiss in the wilderness in s3 to make up for the tragedy of no more adult lottienat interactions? hoping, dreaming, praying... i wonder if they'd involve travis though, especially considering his visions of lottie during his and nat's first time

Okay I’ve been thinking on it and

I don’t think coach Ben set the fire.

We see him take the matches and an axe from outside the cabin, and then we see him watch as everyone bows to Natalie. Later the cabin catches on fire, almost kills the girls, and the conclusion most of us have drawn was that coach set the fire.

I think it’s a misdirect. Earlier in the episode, we see coach hiding out in Javi’s cave area, and he’s using flint to (unsuccessfully) start a fire. He takes the matches and supplies bc this man can’t start a fire!!

What happened when Laura Lee tried to escape using the plane? Her teddy bear burst into flames, taking the plane down. We know that the wilderness can spontaneously combust things, and that fire? The cabin was covered in snow. It was wet wood, damp at the very least. We see the fire spread to completely engulf the cabin in a matter of minutes. Maybe it’s tv magic, but fire doesn’t spread that fast on wet wood.

There’s spirituality and there’s survival. Lottie taught them how to listen. The cabin taught them how to survive. They don’t need the cabin now like they used to, the same way they don’t need Lottie like they used to.

ok, I don't know how to group my thoughts so I'm just gonna put them all here:

laura lee: wouldn't kill anyone, obvy, but also I think everyone would find her too sweet to kill. she'd die naturally, like eating the wrong berries or something. I don't think she'd last long (first to die in the show = first to die in the hunger games).

lottie: she wouldn't kill anyone either I don't think, she'd form an alliance but would piss someone off like taissa or shauna and they'd probably kill her. she wouldn't be good at hunting or gathering and would heavily rely on her alliance with van, gen, melissa and mari.

natalie: we already know she's a hunter. she would just convince one of the sponsors to buy her a gun and before you know it, bam! bam! bye bye people she doesn't like. I could see her being one of the victors, but secretly I think shauna could kill her.

shauna: we already know she's violent, so I think she'd kill everyone and anyone if it came down to it. she's a career if I'm being honest (love you though shauna 🫶). she'd ally with taissa and jackie (ofc) and would struggle with who to kill in the end, but at the end of the day, she'd still finish them off, she'd just feel real bad about it. she's the butcher, she'd feed herself and her allies off of the traps she'd set, or supplies she'd kill people for and would live the longest, honestly. I could see misty killing her (for revenge on natalie, of course).

jackie: this girl is USELESS. she wouldn't survive past the bloodbath if it weren't for shauna. would die of hypothermia in the arena because she doesn't know how to start a fire to save herself (and likes sleeping in snow for some reason???) she was pissing everyone off at one point, so she'd definitely be everyone's target. there's no universe I think she could win these games (unless shauna came to her senses).

misty: this woman is a cold hearted killer, and she's a healer. she'd definitely win, imo. she'd ally up with natalie (who hates it, but like, misty could help her with injuries, why wouldn't she try and keep her alive? no other reason, totally.) this girl is totally feral, though. she'd kill without hesitation. and she'd cover it up so well that the viewers at home would be wondering if she actually killed them or not.

van: would die for taissa and lottie. I've already told you who she'd ally up with, but she'd leave them in a second if taissa asked. she'd be a good gatherer, enough to survive. we've seen van, she's a killer when she wants to be, and she can't die. so maybe she could win 🤭

taissa: would die for van (and maybe shauna). her sleep walking would kill quite a few people. she'd gather plants and stuff, but her main goal is looking after shauna because we see how protective she is of her (and who wouldn't be? shauna shipman is the loml!) would heal shauna and van's injuries to the best of her abilities.

javi: he'd survive purely by hiding and stealing supplies. would die from falling in the lake though :(

travis: he's not making it past the bloodbath, sorry not sorry. he pisses everyone (or maybe just me) off by being so emo. if he didn't die in the bloodbath, he'd die because he doesn't know what he's doing and he wouldn't be a sponsor favourite.

mari: allied with lottie and them. EXCELLENT gatherer! would kill someone but only if she was in a pack with the girlies 🤭. she'd make her berry juice and get everyone drunk.

akilah: according to the hunger games simulation, she's the real winner (and vicious) but I think she'd starve and start hallucinating, so maybe she wouldn't last very long.

crystal: allied with misty, but is immediately killed after the bloodbath by her (bonus points if misty pushes her off a cliff).

gen: allied with lottie's cult group. would help mari gather. don't know much about her honestly, but I think she'd be somewhat helpful. would be killed first by mari or van probably.

melissa: same as gen, tbh.

ben: dead in the bloodbath. with his missing leg and how useless he is throughout the entire series, I wouldn't blame the girls if they just got rid of him asap.

When I said I wanted the Nat X Travis storyline dead, I didn’t mean the characters….

I am very pro Travis because while he was an absolute dick in the first couple episodes and just like season 1 in general, he had a lot of character growth. And I think the main reason he did is because the patriarchy vanished when they were living in the Wilderness. His sexism towards the girls and the way he treated Javi was the right way for a boy like him to act in regular society. So when society and the patriarchy gets taken away he becomes a more kind and gentler person. He starts to take care of Javi, show his feelings by crying many times, accept comfort and help from Lottie, believe deeply in the Wilderness Cult religion they started, etc. He starts to become one of the girls.

And I hope they continue to develop his character this way because I also have this theory that Travis will start to become gender non conforming and not align with him being a boy anymore. I can see Travis seeing himself (or themself) as more non-binary and less like a man. He is about to be the only boy in the wilderness once Coach Ben inevitably dies in S3 so I can see him wanting to fit in and connect with them. It’s just my little theory that I desperately want to happen.
