I have a confession to make: all my knowledge on TB and X/1999 are second-hand knowledge (mostly from you) because if TRC and Holic already traumatised me so thoroughly, I fear trying out the other, even angstier ones. Heck, I still haven't even touched the Clover books I bought last year

Lmaoooo I'd actually say level of angst is more subjective than objective measure. Cuz yea, some tropes and tragedies are just more catastrophical than other but it's actually ours as readers emotional reaction that matters. So whilst TB and X might be 'objectively' angstier than TRC for example I'd say that as a fact amounts to nothing.

For example, Chobits hit me harder than xxxholic did. Chobits is fluff psychological drama whilst xxxholic is.... well, xxxholic. But something about asexual allegories and all the talk what romantic love truly is got to me. Similarly out of all scenes in X (like betrayal scene, Rainbow bridge, all scenes where Kamui is suffering somehow), scene that actually got to me the most is one around vol18 about the character that is nowhere near close to being my fave. Similarly I've heard that some people didn't get emotionally devastated by TB ending while it destroyed me for life ;-; out of all clamp mangas I'd say that's the one that got to me the most, no seconds

So yea, what I'm trying to say is TB or X might not necessarily hit you harder than TRC or xxxholic did

it is funny though every time they bring up like edo tensei or whatever bc trc/holic's plot is entirely "you cannot bring back the dead" (despite the clone/reincarnation nonsense) (and also the fai celes uhhhhhhhhhh situation) but also there's kyle+kabuto and also when a family is a one-eyed ultra-powerful self-hating self-sacrificing idiot and the three kids he travels with. if Kakashi had a kurogane it wouldn't fix him but it would be funny. and on the other hand X predates naruto but lmao protecting your most important people and gay apocalypse moments. Predicting a lot of people getting stabbed thru the heart on account of I'm cursed to relive tbx everywhere I go

My head, suddenly: What if Kamui's wish is actually to be with Subaru? What if his wish actually changed after seeing what happened to Subaru, and they are close enough to make Kamui changes heart, and in the end Kamui truly killed Fuuma but he probably ended up killing everyone while hoping to be reincarnated so he can prevent tragedies happening to Subaru's life anymore and that's how he ended up becomes Subaru's twin in TRC???? I mean Tsubasa/Holic is a story of parallels, Yuuko & Watanuki (O!Syaoran's real world) is actually X's dimension?? So nothing happened in 1999 right??? So Tsubasa/Holic is the continuation of X???

Responses to the CLAMP live that took place this morning (via: CLAMPers on Facebook).

-In TRC, Subaru is the oldest twin (or not). In fact, they denied that a magazine said it was Kamui, and said that even in X Subaru is much older, so Subaru is probably older.

-They did a lot of digging and didn't answer what is the twin vampires' world of origin (I really wanted to know).

-In X Kamui has bone deficiency (maybe calcium?), that's why he breaks so many bones and is always bandaged.

- They asked if in some world Subaru and Seishirou could be happy together. Mokona looked forward to it as much as we did. Ohkawa says that happiness is different for everyone. (It was similar to what Yuuko said in XXX Holic) (That was a subtle NO)

-How Seishirou could forgive himself. In the end, Ohkawa said that he needed humility for that, but it is impossible for him, after all, "a chicken cannot become a fish", and what happened happened.

one of the worst failings of xxxholic is how weak (and fustrating) it is when re-reading. part of this is like, it was a weekly comic so you can’t really expect a streamlined experience after 10+ years (place pin here). 

but most of it is how in 3 ish chapters they completely do away with nearly 200 chapters of lessons and growth just for the tragedy of it all. if you want to be charitable, holic is sadder, more tragic on the second read because you know whats going to happen and every time someone tells the main cast that fate cannot be changed, you can cry along in sympathy. but then compare that to every single moment, storyline and monolouge about how sacrifice is just foolish, that separating yourself from the connections you have to others goes against the laws of the universe, that being in pain for someone elses sake is just showing how little you care for yourself rather than how much you care for the other person. You, reader, main character, customers of the week, need to learn how to create a world in which you respect yourself, in which the people around you respect you, in which waiting for things to just come to you is something only done by the dead. those ties we create with the world are the single most valuable thing you have other than yourself. literally 20 volumes of this and then in chapter 185 out of 213 watanuki just decides to abandon the changes hes made??? for what???? cause he has an oedipal connection to his boss??? but its okay bcs the other parallel story being told kinda needs it to happen too???? it falls so flat. and holic DESPERATELY wants to be taken seriously and thought of as having a philosophical and meaningful narative. so... why didn’t they follow through on it?

ok heres that pin... the thing is, clamp had way too much going on at the time, two weekly comics with complicated fantastical worlds meant to overlap at the same time. (during the run, at a con in paris they jokingly say that the ammount they work would be against french labour laws). i really think it couldve been a better story if they weren’t overworked. unfortunately clamp tends to be unsuccsessful when writing these long spiraling stories. the stories tend to end unsatisfyingly or just dont end at all. everyone jokes about the last pannel of X but thats like the best outcome, really. everyone hates the ending of tokyo babylon and although ive seen a couple people say they like the ending of TRC, its just been compared to the ending of holic. which is technically just on hiatus (x2).

anyways, a friend asked me if they should reread holic and i said no, but i should have said yes. i love xxxholic with all my heart.

Thoughts

Twin Alices: I KNEW Sakura & Akiho would end up getting involved in a more important way for the play. I'm also even more certain now that the climax or the ultimate "showdown" will be happening during this play--where it's literally Sakura & Alice experiencing the true reality of their roles. Also the description of the Alices is very interesting. The one that stood out to me was the Alice "who can't find her way back to the world she came from" because it reminded me of some chapters past where that mysterious voice was giving that "You cannot return/You can no longer go back" warning to Sakura. Which makes me wonder if that second Alice is referring to Sakura. But at the same time, the Alice "who is lost in a world of dreams" also sounds like something that can happen to Sakura too because "wandering in dreams" sounds very much like the yumemi/dream seers that have been featured in many other CLAMP series. Those can visit dreams of other people--so like the various characters in X/1999, and then some from xxxHOLiC/TRC. Also, both Alices are essentially "lost" if you think about it... so they both do not sound very good for either of the girls... TuT I want them all to be happy.

Sakura's Powers: Sakura is growing stronger and stronger. She has clarity, now that she has seen through Kaito's magic---hopefully this actually means it won't affect them, as Momo has shared. Also, Sakura was able to sense something in Akiho. I wonder if that means that there's something inside of Akiho that is kept lock away which prevented Syaoran and the others from sensing magic in her.

Do I have more thoughts on this? Probably but still processing them in my tired brain XD

you're one of the few active clamp blogs i've known. i'm not sure if you'll know how to answer this but do you know if clamp still thinks about finishing their other stories from clampverse (like xxxholic, tsubasa, x, etc) or is it really cancelled? i was wandering if they were gonna bring xxxholic back after finishing clear card but idk if i should keep my hopes up. what do you think?

it’s been a long time since i’ve last talked about clamp here and i recently had my love for their works reignited so it’s been super fun revisiting my favorites.

to answer your question, i think that yes they will eventually. the official statuses for xxxholic rei and x/1999 are that they’re on hiatus, meanwhile twc is concluded (sucks that it’s so short compared to trc). i think... clamp wants to focus on clear card at the moment because they want to put as much care and love into it as they can. cardcaptor sakura is arguably their most adored and famous work so i think they want to do a sequel to it justice and can’t afford to have their attention divided with something else at the moment.

in all honesty xxxholic rei is more likely to be resumed than x/1999, but i think that if they didn’t plan on eventually finishing x they would have released a statement by now saying it’s officially canceled. after all, it’s been 18 years now since it stopped publication. i think they’ll eventually return to it once they figure out just how to publish the last chapters featuring the content they’ve always wanted and planned for it to contain. and i really hope they do, because kamui is one of my favorite characters they’ve ever made. but for now it’s definitely on the backburner.

overall i would say, don’t give up hope! it may be years from now, but i enjoy x and holic way too much to give up hope on them.

Just wondering why you call Syaoran Lava Lamp guy?:P Also, once trc and xxx holic are done ruining your life, you might want to consider RG Veda. *sigh* I completely feel you my friend. Clamp ruins my life, breaks my heart and fills me with joy every time I rediscover it! Looking forward to following you!^_^

Oops turns out you’ve read RG Veda. What did you think? Did you have any favourite characters, relationships and moments? Or did it just hurt all the time?:I Because I would understand that, it screwed me up. Though it’s still kinda good. Which is crazy but kinda clamp’s signature.

Lava Lamp Guy is an old nickname that became the character’s tag for consistency, mostly because he used to live in a Lava Lamp. 

But yes you’re right, I have read RG Veda! It was very fun looking at CLAMP’s oldest full story and seeing how it compared to their current works. It’s very much one of their Big Tragedies (like X/1999) and has a lot of their staple terrible things happening to good people that was very much their Thing for a long time. 

From memory my favourite characters were Kendappa, Souma, and Karura, (I adored them) though Ryuou was also a delight and Kujaku was very interesting. I would say I had a good time with it for the most part - though I wouldn’t include the ending in that description, because that entire ending destroyed me. I still feel the betrayal of how everything unfolded - and because of that it’s not a series I would recommend to anyone unless they were already aware of the Old CLAMP Tragic Formula. Otherwise it’s just. Too. Sad. 

Do I still adore the characters though? Absolutely! 

And they all deserve better, so Tsubasa is a blessing in that regard.

Some stuffs from CLAMP Commentary today that I still remember:

For Vol. 3's cover, they actually designed so Seishiro would be the one sitting and Subaru is the one standing! They actually changed the order because the heights looked off and with Seishiro sitting, he truly looked like a mafia boss and Subaru as his underlings 😭 also they actually added... cuffs? Idk how to call it around the righ arm and left leg, but scrapped it.

Vol. 3 is about the public phone. They actually searched the exact spot for the public telephones. Talk about dedication. Not only that, one of the members actually went to fortune tellers to get her fortune read for references. Another reason why you should read this manga, they really pictured the actual thing here.

For Vol. 4's cover, there are two designs for it with Subaru sitting on the top of something Hokuto standing, but since they were twins, it would look either cuter or better if they stand next to each other. Also I can't with them saying "we discussed if it's okay to give Subaru high heels and we are permitted to. It's good to see a boy with high heels" and I was like '???? 😭😭😭😭😭😭???? Thank you??'

For the content, I remembered they pointed out several fashions point for Hokuto that they actually bought some for the sake of references.

They also discussed Vol. 5 and 6 designs. For Vol. 5, they only drew one draft and get forward with it. 😂 But for Vol. 6, they showed around 4 designs and actually wanted to go forward with Hokuto and Subaru sitting next to each other (and Hokuto wore buns hairstyle too!). But someone from the publisher I think reminded them that the pose is actually used in XXXHolic CPC volume 8 (Yuuko and Jorougumo) so they said "okay, sorry 😭" and scrapped that one. Eventually they went along with the announced version.

Oh! Talking about volume 5, they actually mentioned about Seishiro's shoulders in both volume 3 and 5. They said that they drew it like that because they just liked it, no other specific reasons, and it can't be helped that they want to add the cape for Volume 5 thus the view from the back. It won't be as board as it was in original TB and X but when you see him in Vol 3 draft sketch, you can see that they are probably around Kurogane's or Fuuma's in TRC. Mokona-sensei is doing her best.

They also talked about the color arrangements for the volumes. I didn't catch this part well because I'm doing something else, but they thought the orange should be volume 4 and pink is volume 6.

After that, they showed the telephone cards (it was a thing in Vol 3 actually) with TB's characters. Also the original cover printing from volume one to seven. They also showed the acrylic stand if you bought all seven volumes.

Finally, for announcement, they won't do commentary for Vol 5 and 6 (thus they talked about it in today's live) but they are going to think about it after Vol 7's (pre-order?) release. They also said to wait for the next CPC announcement, I mean, we only have two months left and I think TB's CPC was announced like 2 months before final Holic's releases. As much I hope it would be X they probably won't do it so soon. I mean please it will be their anniversary soon and CPC will be a good way to actually finish the series. Like PLEASE I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED IN THE REST UNREVEALED THREE VOLUMES.

That's it from today! I think the final cover will Subaru solo, also a good point to close the series (with the stuff going on in that volume), and move on to another series... Waiting until Subaru's another appearance in possibly X's cover 🤧

Edit: I saw the rough sketches for Vol 3 again and the shoulders didn't exist 😂 Is it really shoulder pads?
