so the fire nation's defences against earthbenders in avatar are mostly metal, right? stick them on a boat in the middle of the ocean, no bendables around, they're not a threat (until katara got involved, anyway). then toph came along and invented metalbending and the next defence was wood - stick her in a wooden cage, which is a really bad way to hold a firebender (or a katara) but a really good way to hold an earthbender, apparently. even toph. especially toph, since metal's out

but the thing is, if you follow toph's logic of 'this is basically earth, therefore I can bend it, therefore I WILL bend it' - in my mind, at least, wood is closer to pure earth than metal is. it's literally just trees. trees, which grow out of the ground. the ground that toph bends. the war was extenuating circumstances for new forms of bending, like metal and blood and sweat and lightning, but we know that toph fights for the love of it. it's an art, and she's THE BEST at it

anyway, this is my way of saying that toph deserves to woodbend as well. just imagine her discovering it one day after the war, bored out of her mind because she's finally gotten the hang of sandbending too, and continuing to terrify everyone because THERE'S NO WAY TO STOP HER NOW. TOPH IS LIMITLESS. EVERY TIME YOU THINK YOU'VE FOUND A WAY TO STOP HER SHE BREAKS ALL THE RULES OF EVERYTHING TO PROVE YOU WRONG. TINY GREEN GREMLIN.

Her desperate need for control was too much for him, though, and when he died, he cut off StarClan from the world of the living, leaving Tern stranded on earth and the Clans with no spiritual guidance.
