The Walking Twins of Roosendael

Breaking News! Two planes have crashed to the ground at Roosendael in Flanders, Belgium.  Miraculously, no one was killed, and they walked away from the wreckage.

Their hands slipped, their embrace was broken, 

Crashing to the ground, their neighbours were woken, 

No one was killed, only slight injuries, 

The miraculous Walking Twins of Roosendaal are no 'plain' trees!

They are no longer 'ROOTED' to the spot....The Walking Twins of Roosendael... They are an OPEN CLASSROOM for everyone to learn about the wonders of trees... PHOENIX trees regenerate and root after falling to the ground...essentially, they 'walk' across landscapes. In three hundred years, these Platanus will be a long way from the 'Mother Trees'.

Ecosystem Spotlight: The Atlantic Rainforest

Mention the words "South America" and "rainforest" to most people, and their minds will immediately jump to the Amazon, which stretches from Brazil north to Venezuela and west to Peru. But there's another, quite distinct, area of rainforest in South America-- one which is in even greater danger from human activity. The Atlantic Rainforest is separated from the Amazon by an area of grassy savanna, and stretches along the eastern coast of Brazil. Even though the general public may be infatuated with saving the rainforests, the Atlantic rainforest has recieved surprisingly little publicity compared to the neighboring Amazon.

While the Amazon rainforest has lost roughly 20% of its tree cover since industrial logging began there, the Atlantic rainforest is in even worse shape-- over 80% of it has already been destroyed. The majority of Brazil's population now lives along the Atlantic coast, and many of Brazil's largest cities, such as Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, and Salvador, are located in this area, on land that was once part of the Atlantic rainforest.

The Atlantic rainforest's biodiversity is still rich. Hundreds of species of mammals, birds, and reptiles, plus an entire family of amphibians (the Brachycephalidae, or saddleback toads) are found there. But for many species, it is already too late. At least four species of birds restricted to the Atlantic rainforest-- the Cryptic Treehunter, the Kinglet Calyptura, the Algoas Foliage-gleaner and the Glaucous Macaw-- have become extinct within the past century, together with an unknown number of amphibians, reptiles, and insects.

Considering how much money and effort goes toward conserving the Amazon, it is surprising that South America's other rainforest does not get the same amount of attention. Even within Brazil itself, the difference is shocking-- the Amazon rainforest is considered to be one of Brazil's national treasures, but the Atlantic rainforest is scarcely regarded as a footnote. But if the Atlantic rainforest is to survive, it will need more support, both in its home country and elsewhere.

This tiny saddleback toad is part of a family found exclusively in the Atlantic rainforest on Brazil's eastern coast. As the rainforest is destroyed, the toad and countless other creatures may slip into extinction.

It hatches from abrupt, black, common, dense, due, east, furtive, hard, harsh, high, much, rare, separate, shy, similar, and striped eggs.

"This critically endangered bird was described in 2014, and it tragically may have gone extinct by the time the paper was published. It is known from just two sites in the states of Pernambuco and Alagoas in northeastern Brazil. Plumage is mostly brown with a dark crown, black and buff stripes on the face, and reddish-orange tail. It is very similar to Alagoas Foliage-gleaner, with which it was confused for many years and also possibly extinct. Cryptic Treehunter differs by its larger size, bulkier bill, blacker crown, darker sides to the neck, and different voice. Stays inside dense rainforest in hilly terrain, especially where there are lots of epiphytes and vine tangles. Typical song is a soft rattle followed by a series of burry notes."
