I'm a bit late to the party with this particular epiphany but you know what's really fucked up? The Timeless Child reveal retroactively means that the Time Lords weren't moved by sentiment to save the Doctor on Trenzalore, - the Doctor was gonna regenerate anyway - they sent that sparkly, sparkly regeneration energy to cover their tracks.

Can we appreciate how RTD seamlessly gave just vague enough explanations to several unanswered questions in DW lore? Without actually imposing them??

Like, we have the Toymaker casually mention that he fiddled with the Doctor’s history. So now technically we can assume that both versions of the doctor’s past are true: the one where Hartnell’s Doctor is the first and the Timeless Child version. We know that the Toymaker can bend reality to his will. And it’s well within his capabilities to rewrite the Doctor’s personal history. He honestly could have done it just to piss off the Master.

Having the Toymaker carelessly rewrite the Doctor’s past may be the explanation to such inconsistencies as the Doctor having a blue box Tardis pre-Hartnell, for example. But that doesn’t make it less canon, or pre-Hartnell Doctors less valid, as in the current version of reality they are just as real. I think it’s an elegant and respectful way to deal with the Timeless Child plot-line. (Which did create a lot of inconsistencies in the canon whether you like it or not).

But the best thing about this one line from the Toymaker is that we can also interpret it in so many other ways. So this fix-up is not imposed.

Also, after the bi-generation we don’t actually need the Doctor to end their days on Trenzalore. Like yeah, we have a legit grave with the Doctor’s timeline stream (?) and a dead Tardis. So this is canon af. But now it could be the grave of just one of the Doctors. And the story doesn’t have to end there.

I rewatched this story on 24 August 2023. 

We begin in Gallifrey, a long time ago, where an old man and a young woman steal a TARDIS… Clara Oswald warns him about something… and then she turns up in many, many, many places and times to warn all the various Doctors Who.

We next arrive in 1893 London and join the Paternoster gang. They learn something terrible and call Clara and River Song in a dream-call… very clever. It’s all about a place called Trenzalore. 

This story starts the 50th anniversary celebrations with a lot of pizzazz and style… and timey-wimey shenanigans. That reveal of John Hurt as the War Doctor… shivers every time.

In Tales of Trenzalore: The Eleventh Doctor’s Last Stand, there is a short story titled The Dreaming. In this short story, the Eleventh Doctor mentions losing his leg during "nasty business" that involved a Tsunami Snake.
