Chance anon I've been hoarding this ask for a rainy day becuase your words give me the fuzzies and I've been in desperate need of those lately. On with the post!

Horned-King-Realising-he-has-a-Crush-on-the-Reader x Reader:

Wow this man. Has absolutely no idea what's going on.

Oh don't get me wrong he's intelligent enough to keep you hidden and secure, he can't risk another Eilonwy-esque escapee in his castle so all those crumbling walls and secret tunnels have been shored up. You're not going anywhere.

You shouldn't have come poking around, but apparently rumours of his death had been GREATLY exaggerated and you had wanted to see the scar of his blight-like existence on the landscape - not expecting the castle to still be there and gwythents to snatch you off the cliffside - dumping you coarse and bleeding right at the foot of his majesty's throne.

His breath sounded like wind passing through a cathedral - echolike, empty and vast - as he contemplated the possible actions from here.

He should have had you killed for the blatant tresspass into his Kingdom, but something about you flushed, trembling and knelt on the cold stone of his castle stayed his hand.

In his head you're being kept for potential ransom purposes or for information, but as time passes and no one comes looking for you that excuse wears thinner and thinner.

Creeper suggested he torture you to get his sprits up. Creeper was unceremoniously kicked down the stairs.

He has taken to...observing you in your cell from the shadows. Somehow, even in total darkness, your eyes manage to find his each time.

The silence was clearly something you were uncomfortable with at first, but the longer he goes without changing your circumstances, the more relaxed you become. Tentatively, you start to break it with questions.

Thankfully not along the veins of 'when will you let me go?' Never or 'what are you going to do to me?' He doesn't know. But you asked, how his gwythents were doing??

He answers in bewilderment before he can think better of it, not missing how you jumped at the proximity of his voice: They are...well?

You smiled a tiny smile at the response. He takes a small step forward.

How old was he? Ancient. Where were his men? Dead under the bones of his cauldron born. What...is the Creeper? A nuisance. A tiny chuckle breaks from your throat and he can't help the way his hands twitch.

He returns each day. Sometimes you don't have the energy to talk, sometimes you exchange words deep into the night. Creeper has long since learned to avoid the dungeons for his own safety and sanity.

He finds himself less and less willing to wander the halls alone.

One night, while you sleep, the lich moves silently to your door and unlatches it for reasons he can't quite name.

Ashmi does not tolerate poaching in her neck of the jungle. Asian elephants (and particularly forest elephants), as well as greater one horned rhinos are particularly at risk for the ivory trade. In addition, the bengal tigers whose territories outskirt her own are also very vulnerable, as well as sloth bears whose body parts make up traditional medicine.

Ashmi may forgive tresspassers more these days, but this is an unforgivable offense, and the price to pay is with your life.

Your letters brighten my days, otherwise dulled by duties. I must ask for your forgiveness again, since I couldn’t answer any text message yet. Seteth is trying to help me, but he’s not well versed in technology either. The world is moving way too quickly for us to catch up…

Please, keep updating me with the news of our dear students. I’m truly happy to see them thrive and prosper in the continuation of their studies. All those stories you tell me remind me of good times, already gone… Times I wish to never forget. It’s a gift of the Goddess to be able to see them again, even though I must stay in the shadows of this lonely cathedral.

I know we mustn’t be seen together, but I long to see you. Please, visit us soon. Seteth wants to have tea with you, too. He’s much more cheerful now that he’s sure Flayn is safe and sound whatever she wishes to do.

The real reason for this letter is to inform you that I arranged an archive to keep all of our memories safe. I know I refused your petition at first, but after long hours of deep thought, I came to the same conclusion as you. It’s our obligation to ensure the safety of the continent and everyone who lived here, and if we lose our memories, we wouldn’t be able to do it. And in case we die… others will take on our legacy. Hopefully, you’ll be able to take a look at them soon, so you can add any necessary information. I’ll send them as soon as they’re finished.

I’m doing as you instructed: I’m writing reports and so are the other Nabateans.

Sylvain and you were next to each other, leaning over the table in your kitchen. Your gaze was fixed on the careful strokes of Rhea’s quill. Ingrid wasn’t home, so told her you’d invite Sylvain over to study and finish that project ‒ which you hadn’t touched in months, if you were being honest. Of course, it was just an excuse. Instead of doing homework, you were chatting and conspiring among opened books about matters not related at all with university. Who’d rather do that when you were living a real adventure?

As you went over the letter for an eleventh time, Sylvain called your name expectantly. He had a bright gleam in his eye that screamed trouble.

“Do you know what day it is next Friday?” He asked, a tilted smile on his lips.

“It’s the 21st,” You answered. You took the letter with your index finger and thumb, and slowly placed it back inside the envelope.

“Yes and no, my dear friend. It’s the founding day of the Kingdom of Faerghus”, Sylvain pointed out. You raised your eyebrows, questioning. You already knew that, just as every other student; that day marked the date when lessons were interrupted. Typically, there was a week more to hand over projects and other requirements to pass the subjects, so some students went right back home, yet others stayed behind in their dorms until they were completely finished.

“So what?” You asked.

The redhead breathed deeply as he prepared mentally for what was coming next. He felt the weight of your eyes on him. Were you judging him? No, you weren’t, he was well aware of that, but he couldn’t discard all those doubts that bombarded him at all times. He felt the guilt running through his veins and he was second guessing his next proposition.

“I’ve got a plan,” he managed to say at last. That charming façade of his that made him always get his way had faded away. You tilted your head, unable to make heads or tails of Sylvain and prompting him to explain himself. He cleared his throat and continued. “That evening, a special mass is going to be celebrated, just like every year. It’s the perfect opportunity to sneak a peek of those documents.”

“The perfect opportunity?” You exclaimed, eyes wide open. “Sylvain, it’s going to be crowded!”

“Yes! That way, nobody will notice we’re hiding in the old confessionary booth! You know they barely use it anyways. Then, we get out when everybody’s gone, we go to Rhea’s office, find the documents and run away as far as we can.”

You blinked, once, twice, thrice. Sylvain was impatient to hear your opinion. He was jolting his leg up and down out of nervousness as you bit your lips, deep in thought. He already knew you had said you were in this together, that you'd help him find the truth, yet those were just words, not acts. He needed your reassurance once again, for deep inside his chest, against his wishes, he was expecting you to reject his idea, to ridicule him and leave him behind ‒ just like Miklan, like his parents. Because wasn’t that what always happened? He trusted someone, then they’d betray him for circumstances that he never could understand.

“Are you sure that’s not trespassing?” You frowned.

“Since it’s a religious building, I’m pretty sure it’s not,” he claimed. “There’s a right of devotion, or something like that.”

“You’ve thought of this carefully, haven’t you? It’s a solid plan.” You nod slowly. Solid and stupid. It could work, but it entailed a great risk.

“It is,” Sylvain said. His heart was pounding fast in his chest, waiting for your objections.

“What if somebody catches us?”

“We’ll say we forgot something”, he posed. “My phone, your purse, whatever.”

“Seteth won’t buy it”, you argued.

“But it’s me who you’re going with,” he pointed to his own face. “He’ll just think we’re there to bang. He’ll lecture us and won’t think about it further. My reputation precedes me, after all.”

“Okay, fine”, you yielded easily. “In for a penny, in for a pound.” You stretched your arms, thinking about what you were getting into. However, for some indefinite reason, you weren’t worried about it. You were more worried about him.

Sylvain was relieved but, as always, uneasy with his own actions. Was he asking too much of you? Was he pushing your limits? It was hard to act all cool and mighty around you when he could barely control his own feelings and the messy train of thought that always accompanied him.

“I’ll drive us there,” Sylvain commented when he noticed he had been silent for a while. Even though you nodded and tried to smile, you were worried about Sylvain. You noticed him getting lost in his own thoughts, and it was worse that he had the horrible habit of never telling anyone what tortured him inside. Despite wanting to ease him, you couldn’t do anything but reassure him that the plan will go well. Executing it was the only thing left to do now.

Sylvain double parked right in front of your building. He was well dressed to go to the Cathedral, with a white button-up, dress pants and boots. His parents might be there, after all, and he didn’t want to piss them off. Sylvain tapped the wheel with his fingers. It was too early, but he couldn’t wait at home — He was restless, so he had driven to distract himself. Still, that didn’t make him calmer, so he was restless in front of your window instead.

Impatient and anxious, Sylvain grabbed his phone out of his pocket and wrote a message. There was a reason for his uneasiness: he was going to ask you out. Or he was going to reiterate his love for you and see where things would go from there.

Torn between his own actions, his happiness, and if it might make this whole timeline shenanigan more confusing for you, he couldn’t fall asleep and instead dwelled on it for hours. Something had to change. Pitying himself and being a hollow piece of shit to almost everyone only deepened the wound in his soul.  He plucked up the courage and decided he’d do things the right way from then on. And, first, he had to confess to you a couple of things ‒ a sort of declaration of intent.

Sylvain wouldn't ask Ingrid for advice, because she would think this is another one of his dating escapades. She never takes him seriously. Dimitri always understood him, but was clueless. So was Felix, who would be even more unwilling to help. Claude would give him the best piece of advice, but he refused asking the Almyran out of pride. And he was sure Dorothea would tell him to fuck off. So he had only one option. His usual first option, because she knew him like the palm of her hand and always spoke her mind: Mercedes.

Sylvain 15:10 : Mercedes, pls, help me ☹

Mercedes 15:10 : What’s wrong, Sylvain?

Mercedes answered almost immediately. Her attention eased his nerves. Sylvain looked at his watch; he had about twenty minutes left until you’d meet him and sort out his agitation.

Sylvain 15:11 : It’s about you-know-who

Sylvain 15:11 : I need your advice

Mercedes 15:11 : You-know-who finally confessed?

Sylvain 15:12 : No, but I might?

He had finally worded it. A weight lifted off his shoulders. Mercedes would know if it was madness or in fact it would work, right?

Mercedes 15:12 : What are your true intentions?

Sylvain 15:12 : I think I’m in love, for real

Mercedes 15:13 : Oh dear

Mercedes 15:13 : At first I thought you weren’t that serious

He could hear the voice of Mercedes exclaiming, as he had for years. He wasn’t surprised. How many times has he toyed with the idea of love only to discard it? And he had never ever been serious with anyone. If somebody showed the littlest interest in him, he’d dismiss that person and do terrible things to them before they’d do them to him.

Mercedes 15:13 : I told her to be careful around you because you play with women’s feelings

Sylvain 15:13 : I’m not angry, can’t blame you for speaking the truth

Sylvain 15:14 : But you’re the worst wingman ever, tbh

Sylvain 15:14 : Still love you tho <3

Mercedes 15:14 : There is something positive!

Mercedes 15:14 : You-know-who hasn’t run away yet! You two grew closer instead! Most would have run away!

Mercedes 15:15 : I think that’s a good sign

Mercedes 15:15 : She might be in love with you, even if she doesn’t know it

He appreciated Mercedes’ honesty. However, she had given Sylvain another headache, for the devout girl had reminded him of something else. He hadn’t gone out with a girl in months. He had uninstalled all his dating apps – which weren’t exactly for dating, obviously, but flings. Even so, years of being a bastard had to catch up with him at some point, and he guessed it’d be soon enough.

A knock on the window of the car startled him. It was you, with a radiant smile.

“You’ve come early!”, he greeted you as he opened the window. Unknowingly, Sylvain hid his mobile phone. “Get in.”

You went around the car, which looked new, but not extravagantly expensive, and opened the door.

“You’re the one who is early!”, you said, fastening your seatbelt. “Did I have you waiting for too long?”

“Not at all!” Sylvain brushed it off.

“I saw your car through the window, that’s why I came earlier”, you smiled.

Without further ado, he started the engine and thus began your two-hour journey to the biggest cathedral in Fódlan, and your old highschool.

The nearer you were to Garreg Mach, where you practically lived for years – excluding holidays, of course, when you’d visit your family – the more mountains and nature you’d see through the windows.

Sylvain was suspiciously quiet yet again.

“I thought Dimitri would be coming with us?” You asked to spark a conversation against the unbearable silence.

“He’s going to spend all the break with his father in Faerghus after the mass, so he’s not returning to college afterwards,” Sylvain explained nonchalantly. “Besides, he doesn’t like when others drive. Just an odd habit of his.”

“What about you?” You asked. “How come you aren’t going to Faerghus afterwards too? You’ve finished all your papers.”

“Nah”, he shrugged. “My relationship with my family… is rocky. So I’ll be staying behind until our university closes and I finish all my excuses.”

“I thought Miklan was gone for a long while.”

“Well, it’s not just Miklan...” The redhead added. “My father is not interested in me and my whole being, but rather in my grades and my capacity of managing his businesses and his land. Oh, and he’s also-” Sylvain hesitated. He realized he usually doesn’t open up to others this fast. However, thinking about the past you two share, and how you’re always genuine to him despite everything he’s making you do, he continued. “My father is also constantly trying to auction off my hand to any bigwig’s daughter who might make a big investment for the family. It’s exhausting.”

“Sounds horrible. I’m sorry you have to deal with a family like that.” You commented sympathetically. You wanted to express your compassion, so you caressed his shoulder. However, Sylvain flinched in the slightest manner, which you noticed and retreated your hand.

“Remember those girls in the library long ago?” He wondered.

“Yes.”

“I met them in one of my father’s parties. Two fickle, capricious girls that wanted a good catch to get expensive gifts and an exciting roll in the hay.” His tone was harsh, and you saw his knuckles whiten over the wheel. Suddenly, he changed his register into a lighter one. “I forgot to tell you that Edelgard is going to be there with Dimitri. She usually can’t attend, since Enbarr is too far away. Maybe she’s going to stay with Dimitri in Fhirdiad to… amend their relationship. Who knows. And Hubert will be surely there, being Edelgard’s shadow.”

“Ah, I see. Well, she is Dimitri’s step sister, after all, they ought to be on good terms,” You commented.

“Isn’t she your friend?”

“Not exactly. Well, not like Dorothea. We get along, but we haven’t met that much outside the classroom.” You answered.

“I see.” He nodded slightly.

You took advantage of your position in the co-pilot seat and observed him. His soft hair, dark red in the roots and orangey where the light caressed it, the shape of his straight nose and his outlined jaw... He was objectively handsome. The actions of those girls Sylvain talked about were despicable, but it wasn’t hard to imagine that they thought they had won the lottery: this man was rich, handsome, friendly and extremely seductive. However, they had miscalculated the situation, because they had not been the first nor the last ones to try, and they didn’t know Sylvain hated playing that game.

It saddened you, that he had to live that. But it saddened you even deeper in your heart that you didn’t know what to expect. Nothing could assure you that Sylvain would get over his ex-lovers and stalkers. And yes, you liked him – some would assure you were in love with him – but would you be able to pursue a romantic relationship? Especially in this situation?

Ingrid had voiced her opinion a lot of times: you shouldn’t try it. You knew that whatever you did, she was going to support you, but she had her reservations. Mercedes was wary as well. The only dissonant view was Dorothea’s.

Dorothea had gone to a date with Sylvain back in high school and she concluded he was a pig. You had heard so, sat in your desk right behind hers as she was telling the story to Edelgard. Despite that, Dorothea and Sylvain became allies of some sort – which made you jealous until you finally befriended the star of the Garreg Mach choir. It might have been the common nature of the gossip they both faced, or the fact that most of the high-end parties they attended were frequented by the same dull people. It didn’t matter what it was, but, although Dorothea restated constantly that Sylvain was nauseating, her attitude towards him had changed. It lit a small hope within your heart that your friend, who usually despised a lot of men of his kind, was encouraging you.

“Give him a chance!”, she exclaimed one day while you were having lunch with her and Petra. “I feel it in my gut! You’re made for each other.” Petra agreed, although she didn’t know either of you that much.

Yet, what made you different from all those girls Sylvain hated? That unexplained deep connection? Because, other than that, nobody could tell if your love was more authentic than theirs. You weren’t even sure yourself. Did you like him because he was a pretty face, or because you actually were in love? It was hard to tell.

As if Dorothea had read your mind and your hesitation, your phone vibrated.

Dorothea 15:53 : GO FOR THE KILL

Dorothea 15:53 : Make him suffer a little bit before falling into his arms tho

“What’s wrong?” Sylvain glanced over at you with a chuckle.

“What?”

“You just snorted!” He laughed.

“Oh, just Dorothea wishing us good luck,” You tried to sound nonchalant, but you weren’t as good as him. He laughed.

“Is she telling you to avoid me like I’m a pest?”

“Something like that…” You lied.

It didn’t matter from which angle you observed it; the Cathedral had always been impressive. The clear stone, bathed in the sunrays, seemed to be pure gold, resplendent in its holiness. The place stirred like a hive with the confluence of people, most of whom you knew. A nostalgic sensation washed over you.

“Could you wait here?” Sylvain asked, moving his head around and narrowing his eyes to figure out the identity of the people around you. “I have to go greet my parents.” He clarified.

“Do you want to go alone?”

“Yes”, he scratched the back of his head. “I’m sure you’ll meet them one day,” He winked, “but not today.”

The redhead faded into the crowd, while you waited in the courtyard right before the hall. You didn’t know what to do, so you sat over one of the low walls. You saw a patch of blonde hair, but you weren’t sure if it was Dimitri, so you didn’t move. Meanwhile, you recognised many of the passers-by, as they were family of your own classmates, but you doubted they’d remember you.

A deep voice called your name from the shadows of a nearby tree. You looked at the source of the sound.

“Hubert?” You blinked several times. That was a surprise.

“Indeed. I’m here to accompany Edelgard. What are you doing here?”, he asked. “I was certain that you didn’t like going to mass, and you have to ties with the Kingdom of Faerghus.”

“I’ve come with Sylvain”, you answered. Hubert’s eerie, yellow eyes were fixed on you, disturbing you.

“I see,” he commented. A small grimace that resembled a smile formed on his lips.

“He’ll come in a moment”, you forced a smile. You didn’t dislike Hubert, but he had an extraordinary ability to put your nerves on edge.

“I wanted to thank you for that favour,” he commented efficiently.

“That thing?”, you made an ‘o’ with your lips. “No need to thank me, Hubert. We’re… friends?”

“I prefer the term strategic partners”, he nodded.

“Okay, that name is fine too.”

“The reason I’m here is that I must inform you that the heir of the Gautier is engaged”, he said with solemnity.

“Excuse me?” Your little world shattered into pieces, broken. What the fuck was Hubert talking about?

“A month ago, his parents engaged him with one of the daughters of Mr. Rowe. Since you’re rather close with him, I thought you should know it.”

“... I see.”, you muttered, still shocked, trying to remain composure.

“I must go now,” he said, but he didn’t move. “I apologise for being the harbinger of bad news.”

“No need to worry, I just was surprised. See you around”, you waved at him, indicating that you’d be okay. Hubbert made a bow and vanished.

That was an unexpected turn of events. Your heartbeat was loud and fast, and you did your best to quickly blink away tears so that no one would notice. Despite the doubts, the second thoughts and all the things against you, you had thought you’d be in control whether you ended up with Sylvain or not. However, just like the rest of your life, it seemed that you were trapped in a book somebody else was writing. And now, in the place where your crush had begun, any hope you harboured had disappeared, just like a flame put out with a bucket of cold water.

You opened and closed your eyes rapidly to make the tears disappear and stood up. You breathed in and out in slow movements. Your body began relaxing.

Where was Sylvain? There was almost nobody else outside. The mass would begin in almost five minutes. He must have been talking with his parents, if what Hubert said was true. How were you in such a deep mess?

As if your thoughts had summoned him, Sylvain appeared from the lateral of the cathedral.

“Hey! You ready?” He sprang to you.

“Yes,” You tried to cover your face. You couldn’t let him see you in vulnerability.

“Okay, remember the plan.” He leaned into you, lowering his voice. “We sit on the back row, and 10 minutes before the end we get out. Then, we enter through the left door and hide in the confessionary booth. You go in first, then I follow you 3 minutes apart.”

You nodded and walked into the cathedral. You couldn’t look at him in the eyes. It was going to be a long evening.

The confessional booth was dark inside. There was a separation between the two parts that composed it, so the space was reduced. You sat on the wooden bench, thankful that it didn’t crack at all.

Sylvain had been right: nobody saw you. The confessionary itself, with an entry in the back, blocked the view of the lateral door to any onlooker that could have been there. On the other hand, you could see the people sitting in the left wing of the building through the lattice in a very convenient way. It was an excellent place to hide. The pulpit was far away, yet the voice of Archbishop Rhea was heard everywhere.

In spite of your relative security, this had to be by far the worst idea you had ever agreed on. Everything seemed doomed in that moment. You were sure in that moment that you’d get caught or expelled. You wanted to run away.

But right then, the back door silently opened and Sylvain entered the scene.

Sylvain’s wide shoulders almost didn’t fit through the entrance. You tried to move around to make some space for him, but it was in vain. You were thankful for the shadows, because your cheeks were growing redder and redder by the moment as his presence became more and more noticeable.

You didn’t know how exactly, but you ended up with your legs over his lap, your shoulders touching and your faces way too close for your liking. At least right then, when Hubert’s words were still fresh in your mind.

The choir started singing a tune, which indicated that the mass was approaching its end. Such pure voices were inappropriate for that moment you were sharing with Sylvain.

“I swear this was bigger before...” Sylvain whispered in your ear. It made your hair stand on end.

“Yes, when we were confessing, being 12 and younger, and being alone. Now it’s even more tiny because someone decided to have the both of us in here.” You grunted back, careful of not being heard.

His breath caressed your face, and his warmth radiated from his clothes. He was too comfortable, and you felt like you could be cuddled like this forever, while at the same time you wanted to run away from his touch. It occurred to you that he might have been a sorcerer, and that he had put you in an unavoidable spell. How else would all these feelings be so intense? It couldn’t be just love, right?

“I have something to tell you,” Sylvain said, but he wasn’t looking at you.

Was he going to tell you that he was engaged? Your breathing was erratic once more. You couldn’t flee, much to your dismay.

“What is it?”

“I…”, he cut himself.

“You…?” You were suspenseful, but you weren’t sure for what. Disappointment? Elation? Sylvain turned his head and fixed his pupils on yours.

“Be my girlfriend.” He managed to speak. You had no words. The world was definitely laughing at your face. “I’m in love with you and you’re in love with me. So why not? Isn’t it the logical thing to do?”

“It’s not that easy, Sylvain, despite how much I wish it was.” You sighed, at a loss for better words.

“Why not?” He pressed.

His heart dropped and a thousand thoughts rushed into his mind. He wanted to scream. How could he dare to think someone would genuinely love him? He got hurt, as it always happened. He shouldn’t have let his walls down, not even for you. He shouldn’t seek love, he shouldn’t have bothered. Everytime he considered himself worthy of love, the world around him would start crashing down. ‘You’re set yourself up for failure’, Sylvain kept repeating to himself. That’s what his father always told him when things didn’t turn out well. His father had been right. He was a failure. Even when his intentions were pure, he had already tainted his future. There was no redemption for him, right?

You picked up on the rising panic on Sylvain’s face, and you felt guilt inside your chest.

“I’m scared,” you said, trying to justify yourself. You believed it was the moment to be sincere. “I’m scared that you’re lying to use me. Or that you’d just get bored and throw me away.”

“I’d never do that to you,” he said, horrified by the fact that you wouldn’t accept he was telling the truth. “You’re not like the-”. He interrupted himself. “I see it now. I won’t stop repeating the same sentence, right? Now nobody will believe me.” Sylvain covered his face with his hand. “I cried the wolf way too many times…” He mutters.

“There’s something else,” you whispered.

“Just say it. It’s not gonna get worse at this point.” Sylvain chuckled somberly.

“You’re engaged.”

“It’s not something I chose. And it’s definitely not something I’m happy about.” He stated. Your words felt like a knife on Sylvain’s skin. “I didn’t want to tell you because I thought I’d get my parents to break the engagement first, but it’s taking longer than I’d expected.”

Out of the blue, Sylvain placed his hands around your face.

“Will you be my girlfriend? You didn’t say no. You know that I wouldn’t willingly propose to a girl when you are right here by my side. You haven’t seen me with another girl, have you?” He assured, a tinge of desperation in his voice.

“I don’t want to say no,” you answered, confused. “But- Sylvain, we’re doomed. We’re not meant to be.”

“I don’t care about fate. Does that mean you’d give me a chance?” His eyes were intense, hard and, all the same, warm and comforting, with the colour of liquid caramel. Sylvain threw all his doubts away for once, just wanting to be with you. You were one of the only things keeping him happy.

“I don’t know… Sylvain, I-”

“If you tell me I’ve still got a chance, I’m not going to give up. I love you.” He announced seriously. “Don’t get me wrong, if you really want me out of your life, I will do it, but otherwise…”

“This is a trap. How am I supposed to tell you looking at you in the eye that I don’t want to see you ever again?” You complained.

“I’m not a trickster, but I’m not gonna let you go either. I’ll have to convince you to be mine, then.”

“And how are you going to convince me?”, you furrowed your eyebrows.

“I already did the hardest part, I made you fall for me.” he smirked.

With that, you couldn’t resist the invisible force pulling yourself to him anymore. You crashed your lips against his and sat astride his lap. It was easy; you had already done it before. Sylvain was amazed, but he was not one to lose an opportunity. He kissed you back. Unable to control himself, his hands grabbed your waist, but he didn’t let himself explore. He was unsure of what was happening, but he was glad he’d got to taste your lips a second time.

You pressed your chest against his torso, while trying to hug him closer. His lips were soft and firm, his movements decided, and he knew what he wanted. Sylvain took advantage of a pause you took for breathing and let his tongue slide in. He was voracious and greedy in his attentions, and he did not let a single speck of your mouth untouched.

You were starting to feel dizzy and wanted much more, but you stopped.

“Everybody should be gone by now,” you muttered, his mouth still pressed to yours. He was panting, and you could guess what was on his mind – you could feel his excitement rising in his lap, after all.

“What was that for?”

“I felt like it.” you lovingly took off a lock of his hair from his forehead. “I’m not going to give you my heart just like that, but I swear to the Goddess, I can’t resist you.”

“Well, I’m not going to complain if you do it again, you know.” he smirked, releasing you from his grip. “After all, we have to make up for lost time.” He grabbed your wrist before letting you go completely, and lowered his tone. “But don’t get used to torturing me like this, or I’ll eventually lose my composure.”

“I’ll risk it,” you playfully answered while you distanced yourself.

You exited the booth without a single sound. The church was dark, since there was no light coming from the large windows anymore. The sun was gone. The place was creepy without a single source of brightness, and the stone was grey and cold.

Your steps followed Sylvain as he manoeuvred between the pews and towards the sets of stairs that led to the upper floor. You had not been there frequently, just once or twice to help Seteth move some books after class. Sylvain, however, knew the place like the palm of his hand due to Seteth’s insistence in correcting the mischievous redhead’s nature. Seteth never achieved his ambition, of course, but as a result, Sylvain could go to Rhea’s office with his eyes closed. And to Seteth’s one, to the cleaning supplies stall and many more rooms he had the pleasure to visit in his youth.

“Careful with the stairs, the stone is worn-out, and you can fall down”, Sylvain warned you.

There were bright coloured statues of the saints and Seiros splattered around, along with some old-looking tapestries that needed to wash. You couldn’t admire them for long, because before you could register that you were raiding the empty cathedral at 8 p.m., Sylvain had already stopped before a wooden door.

“It’s here”, he stated solemnly.

“Are you ready?”, you asked.

“More than ever”, he smiled and turned around the doorknob.

Of course, it was closed.

“Fuck”, he said.

“We should have expected that”, you rubbed your temple.

“Do you have a bobby pin?”

“Nope”, you hummed.

“Okay, time to go home I guess”, Sylvain suddenly laughed, and so did you. “It feels like we’ve gone crazy, right?”

“Oh my god, Sylvain, you thought about the confessional booth but it didn’t occur to you that the door might have been locked?”, you giggled.

“Shut up! You could have guessed it, too!”

“Four months ago I thought I’d never speak to you in my life, and look at us now”, you couldn’t help the laughs.

“What’s so fun?”, Seteth’s voice reverberated through the narrow corridor, shutting both your mouths at the same time.

He had appeared from a door right across you ‒ from his own office, you presumed. You were so nervous that you couldn’t say a word. It was surreal. Seteth didn’t look angry, he looked curious instead, something you weren’t used to. The years might have eased his nerves. But that fact didn’t make your position any easier.

“Look, Seteth, we’re not here for any funny business”, Sylvain defended himself and you. He stepped forwards out of habit.

“Because entering Lady Rhea’s office is not suspicious at all”, Seteth calmly replied.

“Okay, it seems suspicious. But it’s not what it seems,” he began scratching the back of his head. “I dragged her here and…”

You had relaxed enough to form coherent words. And you decided it was the moment to come out clean, because lies and secrets were just turning your life upside down. Furthermore, Seteth’s presence ignited an old feeling; the need to rely on a much more mature adult. You cut Sylvain’s words.

“Seteth, we’ve come here looking for some papers that belong to Lady Rhea”, you said loud and clear. “We were going to steal them.”

“What are you doing?” Sylvain asked incredulously.

“Seteth, we’ve been having the weirdest dreams”, you said. “And they won’t stop, to the point they seem real, like memories.” Seteth's disposition changed. He tensed, and his face paled. “We went to Byleth’s office and… we read a letter from the Archbishop. We know that those dreams happened, but we wanted to verify it and learn why everything’s happening. Otherwise, we’ll go mad.”

Seteth’s green eyes went from your figure to Sylvain’s and back to you again. It was visible that he was torn, choosing what to do. The older man sighed, defeated. He had lost from the beginning, because he couldn’t conceal his fear from such an unexpected accusation.

“It’s a long story”, Seteth said. “Come into my office and have some tea.”

He let you in the room, only lit with candles scattered around. You and Sylvain sat on a sofa that was behind the coffee table. Sylvain went to a desk filled with piles of papers, where there was an electric kettle and various wooden boxes.

“I’ve got ginger tea and a four-spice blend. There must be some sweet-apple blend too somewhere here, Flayn’s favourite”, Seteth offered.

“I don’t mind which one”, you said, smiling politely.

“We’ll have whatever you're having, Seteth”, answered Sylvain.

There was a prolonged silence. The only sounds were the boiling water of the kettle and Seteth rummaging in his drawers. A nice aroma of ginger slowly spread through the air.

The man of the church placed three teacups on the table and sat in the armchair right in front of you. You had never noticed, but Seteth was fit, way too much for a man of his profession. It made sense, though, when you remembered his expertise upon a wyvern.

“I’m sorry about the light. I never got around installing lamps, and I like the candles. They remind me of more familiar times…”, Seteth said as he poured you a cup of steaming tea. “Where should I begin?”, he inquired.

“Did those things really happen?”, Sylvain asked first.

“Yes”, Seteth nodded matter-of-factly. “All those memories you’ve recovered have happened in the past. Or… in our other lives, as I like to say.”

“Are those things going to happen again?”, it was your turn to ask, then. Seteth could sense the fear in your voice.

“We hope the war will never repeat itself”, he reassured you. “We don’t really know what the future has in store for us, but we’ve deemed it very unlikely. The events that have happened in this era are completely different from those in the past.”

“Who are ‘we’?” Said Sylvain. “If you don’t mind the questions…”

“The Nabateans,” Seteth answered dryly. He took a sip of his cup of tea. “I’m sure you remember, the Immaculate One back in the battle of Garreg Mach, right?”

“Some things are… vague for me”, Sylvain lamented, because you had told him the story a million of times, but he couldn’t recall the encounter.

“I remember it. It was Lady Rhea, right? I remember Edelgard telling us she was a monster controlling the continent from the shadows.” You explained.

“Yes… So-”

“Wait,” Sylvain interrupted Seteth. “Can you turn into a dragon?”

“Not me,” he denied. “It's been hundreds of years, but that’s not quite the topic of this conversation, is it?” The green-haired man reminded him.

“But how did it happen? How did we end up living so many lives?”, you interceded. “Why didn’t we… just die?”

“It’s Byleth’s doing”, Seteth replied. “Lady Rhea, back when Byleth was born in 1159, placed Sothis’ heart in his, hoping our mother would live again…”

“Sothis… the Goddess? She’s real?” Sylvain was dumbfounded. You looked at your cup of tea, then to Seteth, unable to articulate an answer. You were thankful for Seteth’s patience.

“Yes. This gave him great power, as he became one with the Goddess. Which granted Byleth as well the power of turning back the hands of time.”

“So he’s been turning back the time after the war of Fódlan?”, you exclaimed.

“Byleth wanted to save us all from the tragedy that devastated Fódlan. He kept turning back to the year 1180, yet one way or another, the string of events led to the same. So, at last, Byleth decided he needed to go way back, to the beginning of everything.” He paused, and saw your faces focused on every word that was escaping his mouth. He smiled to himself, remembering those times when you both were younger and listened to his lessons. Your faces might have changed, and your voices and bodies, but the eyes of his pupils were still the same. “Sothis, aware of the future, made her holy sacrifice to prevent Nemesis and his kind to take over. The history of Fódlan changed just enough to give us a rest...”

“So Byleth’s hair will be dark blue forever now?”, Sylvain asked.

“Yes. The professor is no longer the vessel of the Goddess,” Seteth clarified. “There are no longer any crests nor Hero’s relics. Therefore, technology has prospered, and your generation was born later ‒ although we don’t know exactly why this happened.” Seteth paused to sip his tea and hear your questions, but all the information had left you and Sylvain dumbfounded. Therefore, he continued his speech, somewhat relieved that he could finally tell a human all these burdens. “Flayn used to cry a lot, weeping about your absence,” he tenderly recalled. “Lady Rhea and I were sad too. We’ve been through a lot, all of us, after all…”

“I have another question, Seteth…”, Sylvain started. He was in deep thought, just like you. “Why is it that we’ve got our memories back?”

“I honestly have no idea…”, Seteth shook his head from side to side. “It could be because of your previous relationship. Back in the Officers Academy you were on... extremely good terms, as far as I know, so when I was your teacher in this high school it surprised me that you two never coincided. However, you’ve found your way next to each other, so perhaps some things are meant to be…” The older man trailed off, but continued. “Well, I don’t know. I know for us, the kin of Sothis, it’s probably due to our blood. For humans… it’s harder to tell.”

You looked at Sylvain from the corner of your eye, but you didn’t dare to face the ginger.

“Isn’t this a big secret?” you questions, amazed that Seteth ‒ and no other than Seteth himself ‒ was confiding to you such details.

“Yes, it is”, Seteth confirmed, narrowing his eyes.

“Why are you telling us, then?”

“Because, as I said, I appreciate you. Both of you. We’ve fought side by side, you’ve rescued Flayn numerous times”, he crossed his arms over his chest again. “Sylvain risked his life for Flayn numerous times, while you were also close to Byleth. It’s unnatural not to trust you...” Then, Seteth spoke once more. “But I must request that this reunion stays between us. Please. We don’t want any resentment to be born in such a peaceful time as this is. And I’ve broken so many rules right now that I’m frankly scared of what might happen.”

“Okay, we won’t say anything, Seteth”, you nodded. “I promise.”

“You have our word”, Sylvain accepted.

“Not even… Rhea or Byleth. If you don’t mind, this never happened.” Seteth touched his beard.

“Wait, Seteth, I still have Professor Byleth’s letter”, you said, worried. “He must have noticed it went missing…”

“Don’t worry about that, Byleth is a disaster. He came by this morning, I’ll tell him he dropped it and that he should be more careful”, Seteth smiled.

“Thank you, Seteth. For real”, Sylvain said. And you saw for the first time in his eyes the lightest shadow of hope.

outlander headcanons!

primarily for my outlanders (yes, i cracked and boosted khaak to 60), but here we go.

SPOILERS FOR KOTFE/ET+ HERE!

nightmares? like, force sensitive or not, they struggle a lot to figure what’s real and what isn’t. dreams are VERY vivid as an outlander, and more often than not, are omens to future events. if they even have time to sleep, they definitely struggle with going to sleep because of it, or staying asleep because of it.

stressed af. once they become commander, the outlander (especially if they aren’t a jk -a battlemaster-, a jc -an ambassador-, a trooper -a colonel at this point- or a warrior -a whole faction’s wrath) is absolutely screwed trying to finish everything themselves. the specialists help out a lot and theron and lana are godsends, but we seem to forget that this is all on the outlander. this is still all their job, and they aren’t just a figurehead. caf can’t fix this. 

being unfit for the job? really mostly for the force blind classes (quizzy and trooper being included here). it’s been mentioned by multiple people knights was meant for the knight, and if not also extended to the consular and warrior. but a bounty hunter? a smuggler? a trooper? an agent? someone who only knows their daily need for more money just to make a living? someone who hasn’t ever had to lead more that a specforce platoon? someone who works in the shadows instead of broad daylight? being the outlander isn’t meant for these classes, but getting stuck here can be absolutely hell for them without understanding half the things that are being said around them. revan? the emperor? force possession?

ziost? yavin iv? two planets where you basically need a grasp on the force to even really survive the hellish scape for a city planet turned warzone, or the jungles of ghosts and other force creatures?

morality? as mentioned above, most classes know they’re clear cut. they know right or wrong (and do by it as they please), but no longer held in place by the code five years later (if they choose so) or by their faction, what do they do? they don’t get praised anymore for being so pure, no military badges. do they sacrifice a patrol squad for a friend or lover now? is it worth killing someone who tresspassed or betrayed them? now that there is no light or dark, there is no more the empire’s right or the republic’s wrong, what do they do with all that pent up discrimination?

paranoia? after five years of being in carbonite no less, the outlander probably struggles a lot wondering who’s here to kill them, and who’s here to save them. especially after umbara, they tighten their defenses and their hearts, possibly bunkering down for days at a time or taking out their anger on others because of it.

phantom pains? being trapped in carbonite, even after lana’s cure, still pained them so bad they eventually would have phantom pains of lurking injuries from that time. more along the time they’re on zakuul running from vaylin, but it could progress from arcann’s stab wound, or their fight with other zakuulan enemies.

new faces? as much as they see lana in the first few months i predict chapters 1-9 took, their second familiar face is vaylin, and she’s trying to murder them. koth becomes friendly enough (if you decide not to be an ass and kill zakuulans left and right), but the third is theron, but they don’t see him until months, maybe years later. as mentioned above, there’s a small freakout that definitely happened here, especially if their love interest was part of the vanilla crew or theron. every single face is new to them, and who knows if they’re trying to kill you or they’re sympathetic to you?

cross-faction allying? if a warrior chose to ally with the republic because they’ve been cast out of the empire, or the knight chooses the empire because they feel more in tune with themselves there, there’s a lot of underlying trust issues in-between both parties. not everyone is pleased, the republic deserters are happy to go back home, but the imperials are disgusted (but begrudgingly work with them). the republic deserters are disappointed with working for those who sacked coruscant, and the imperials are happy to return home. the outlander struggles with making everyone happy, which can leave longtime effects on them. do they ally with the republic to keep lover!theron happy at the risk of angering lana? do they ally with the empire to keep lover!lana agreeable at the risk of theron leaking their secrets to the sis?

self-care? unless they’re really self-indulgent, the outlander just doesn’t have time for self-care. they, lana and theron probably have all-nighters together just to keep everything up and running. they haven’t eaten in days, caf is in their bloodstream now, and they can barely hold their head up, much less keep their bloodshot eyes open. for all the right reasons, the outlander is probably the unhealthiest person in the alliance. and keep in mind what starvation, malnutrition and sleep-deprivation can do to someone, especially if you exercise a lot (as we see our sprinting outlander do everywhere; hint, brain function drops dramatically)

depression? seperation anxiety? social withdrawal? the outlander probably experiences that all and more. after being told that five years have passed, and their crew hasn’t been found yet, and a whole empire is out to get them? there’s no way that isn’t traumatic enough to have a profound psychological effect on the outlander, causing them at least some form of seperation anxiety from lana or theron (or someone they’re close to) or social withdrawal from just being unable to deal with all anymore. if not that, a whole laundry list of issues that they don’t show on screen.

the psychological effects of valkorian? valkorian bouncing around in the outlander’s head for years on end, you can’t tell me that even after that’s all over (especially the outlander extensively used his powers for their gain), that they aren’t floundering without him. he may have been evil, but he also was nearly their rock through the entire mess of both expansions. he had answers for the outlander when no one else did, he had immense power at his disposal for the outlander if they so chose. now without him, what do they do? they still hope time will stop sometime, so they can ask for more power or get answers to things they don’t understand. there are some pretty close calls following valkorian’s death. they have to be explained somehow.

arcann? if the outlander keeps him around, there is going to be some serious trauma they need to deal with seeing the person that stabbed them once and tried to kill them so many other times. they aren’t going to be all buddy buddy and there sure as hell is way more emotional thought behind shooting down senya’s ship then there is present in-game. and forget about romancing him (unless there’s some odd version of stockholm syndrome going on there) without crying first.

i’ll probably add more as i think about them, but feel free to add your own or use ideas from here! i know these are some of the basis of my own stories :D

          ❝ i think you bit off more than you can chew. ❞   her finger turns the silver band around her left ring finger,  new and pristine ; on there long enough barely to start leaving a mark underneath.   thinks of the last time she said that phrase,  to him,  jokingly before they agreed to share a last name.     in a few days, they’ll be moved from alaska to tokyo, and when they’re stationed there, she knows it’ll be harder for them to get away without running a risk of going missing during a NEEDED deployment against a kaiju.   ❝ can’t believe we’re finally getting our own jaeger.  ❞   since graduation, without a jaeger to immediately be assigned to, echo saber was just a blueprint. a thought, until the mark IVs were approved by the UN.  the mark IVs: crimson typhoon, echo saber ( THEIRS!! ) , hydra corinthian, and mammoth apostle, just to name a few.               BUT SOON SHE’D BE STANDING TALL, ONE OF THE NEWEST MEMBERS OF THE PPDC’S FLEET.    their jaeger.   of course, they were both thankful for still being able to work,   jac having found a place in LOCCENT, and ryker, who was happy working repairs on the existing jaegers.  but to do what she was trained?   she could feel her pulse race.    her heart fluttered in excitement as she glanced out the window of ryker’s ford bronco, wind fluttering in co-existence because the roof was missing.  she’ll miss alaska and everything it has brought her.   she fiddled with the sleeve of her sweater, with lady danger’s insignia pressed into the fabric.  her jacket is thrown over her lap once the car comes to a stop, and she moves to open the door;  ryker is in front of her in a few seconds and help lift her down from the raised truck.  

     ❝ with you ? ❞   ryker laughs.  ❝  i’m always biting off more than i can chew with you.  you’re a handful.  ❞   jac playfully scowls as he laughs, and wraps an arm around her shoulders, locking the truck before they go towards the tattoo shop.   

       ❝  says the one who dared me to get a tattoo of a kaiju! ❞   jac swats a hand at him as he opens the door, her lips curved into a lingering grin.  ❝ and you know i don’t back down. ❞     she sees ryker raise his hands in surrender,  because he knows better.  her eyes scan the walls, looking at the tiled pictures of kaiju on the wall.   tresspasser, hundun, kaiceph, scissure, and karloff... among others, but her dog tags catch her attention and she reaches up to grab it again.   ❝  i can’t choose, can we please get something else?  ❞

       ryker gives a laugh, one that shakes his body. ❝  yeah, okay, jackie.  ❞ eventually then he pauses, before beckoning the tattoo artist they called hours prior over, asking for a piece of paper.  he splits it in half, before he uses a pen to write OHANA.   ❝  now, write it in your handwriting. ❞  jac leans on her tiptoes and writes it in her own writing, ohana.   she looks at ryker, raising an eyebrow.  ❝   it means family in hawaiian.  no matter where you go, no matter how far we go. we’re family.  we’re not blood, but the loyalty and support and love i have for you,  that’s not going to change.  ❞   jac smiles at him before she hugs him, her cheeks warm.  the way he says it so kindly and genuinely makes her   ryker switches the papers and tells the artist to write jac’s writing of ohana on his ankle, and ryker’s handwriting on hers.

My Time To Fall #12

The fall was shorter than one would expect, landing ten feet down in a graceful crouch on a trapdoor. The angling to open it was always awkward, though a rope connected by a steel clamp made it simpler to close, as you could cling to it to make another twelve foot drop softer. The woman clung to the shadows even now, wanting to surprise anyone who may had been there before her.

The number was few, two shimmering scaled creatures draped in expensive purple silks, wringing hands and slithering tails where their feet would be in a nervous rhythm. They did not notice her silent approach, gestures getting more wild as she took her time.

"Someone is early." Her deep voice cut through the silence of the room, causing the two snakes to jump, almost shedding skin as they were quite literally scared out of it. " I apologize for my own tardiness." The two guests hurriedly went to assure her as she took sight of the familiar empty rounded room. The only thjngb besides mud and stone being a solid oak throne against one of the curved edges, which the black-clad woman promptly strode up to, taking a seat, throwing her legs over carved armrests.

"No apologies needed Nyx! We were early after all!" The soft sound of scales scraping against stone found Nyx's ears, as the tension of one of the snakes, wearing a golden clasp, could no longer contain his nervous energy. "So-"

He immediately cut off as Nyx raised her hand, palm down making a slicing motion. With a raised eyebrow, she only stared as his face crumbled, realizing his error. His mouth flapped, forked tongue flickering in and out as he tried to taste the air, measuring the possible hostility. Nyx stared a few moments more, head cocked to the side.

"What brings you here, Gorg? We had agreed that this territory was invite only, and I do not recall giving you such a pleasantry."

"Uh-uh. I, hng." Gorg had trouble composing himself against the steel in her eyes, undercut with thinly veiled rage. "I deeply apologize," he bowed, showing clear respect, "I had tried to contact one of your underlings, to reach you. Though I was constantly avoided. I felt I had no choice as the matter is urgent." His tail slid frantically as he met met by a stone cold silence. He fussed with the clasp of his robe, shifting the material slightly. He slithered a few paces back, Nyx rising from her lounged position. She stalked closer to him, measured steps making only the slightest scrape against the ground in her deliberate approach. She came face to face with Gorg, subtly grasping the hilt of her sword.

"What could possibly urgent enough to risk you life?" Her voice came out soft, making him have to lean closer to hear what she had said.

"The golems have your lover, Maria."

Nyx did not dare to let her surprise overtake her confident demeanor. A snake would always try to strike a weakened opponent, no matter the proof of their strength.

"Where." The very word contained enough lividity to make even the toughest of warriors retreat. Danger clear in the single word.

"All I know, is that they have her locked in an underground chamber, near the border of their territory. My border scouts only saw her by pure luck, the golden flash of her hair catching his eye. They disappeared behind a cluster of boulders, where he could not follow."

"Thank you. This is urgent indeed, your punishment will not be great." Gorg glanced desperately around, searching for escape.

"P-punishment?" His voice rose three octaves, lids of his eyes opening and closing in rapid succession as his pupils narrowed, becoming a quill thin line.

"Of course. You still are tresspassing, and I am not renound for my leniency." She unsheathed her sword, faster than Gorg could hope to dodge, slashing at his arm, and leaving a thick gash on his bicep, which quickly pooled with blood, running a red waterfall down his arm, drops landing on the crystalline sword still held there, aloft and ready to catch whatever flowed out.

Terror filled his eyes, before they glazed over completely, the blood-red rust of the hilt moving up the sword, turning the blade blood red. Turning the devilish grin on Nyx's face nightmarish, and triumphant.

Old white coworker: forget the wall, we should just put snipers on the border and a sign that says "Tresspassers will be shot. Enter at your own risk." Just kill anybody that comes over the border. That'll teach them. Or better yet just put a bunch of land mines. We won't need border guards just LAND MINE REPLACEMENT TECHNICIANS. They can just listen for the BOOM and then go put a new one out.

4. Has your character ever witnessed something that fundamentally changed them? If so, does anyone else know?

    Okay, when Neria was but a wee apprentice, she wasn’t avidly anti-circle. She was mad she couldn’t see her family anymore, but she was one of the mages in the mindset of “If we’re good, then everything’ll be fine”. Once though, when she was about sixteen, she managed to sneak down to the cells to bring food she had stolen to a friend in solitary confinement, and in the cell next to her Neria saw a corpse. She kinda pieced it together that if she wasn’t down here risking her own neck to bring her friend food, he would probably die down here too and be forgotten. After that she started noticing more and more things wrong with her home and knew she couldn’t just be complacent to it all anymore. And no, no one knew until many years later what changed her mindset.

13. Is your character bothered by the sight of blood? If so, in what way?

    Yeah, in a way. But it really depends on the circumstance. Like, she’s a healer, so if someone got hurt and she’s dealing with that, then she’s unfazed. But if it’s someone using blood magic (specifically her dumbass boyfriend) then it really unsettles her, kind of a mixture of both disgust and worry.

27. How does your character normally deal with confrontation?

    She… doesn’t deal with it. She’ll fight if she absolutely has to, but usually tries talking things out first and foremost.

44. How easy or difficult is it for your character to say “I love you?” Can they say it without meaning it?

    Well she grew up learning that she was unworthy of love, and even if she did find it, it would only be used against her.  She and Jaydin were obviously in love for at least a year before either of them actually said it, because admitting that would give anyone who wished them harm way too much power. In the current (post-tresspasser, living in Orlais with her Divine wife and dumb husband) she says it all the time, at any opportunity she can get, randomly spouting it off whenever she feels like it.

10. Does your character feel more comfortable with more clothing, or with less clothing?

    She’s more comfortable in less clothing (a shirt and pants) compared to more (like a formal outfit). But she has to be wearing at least a shirt and pants, any less than that is not good.

20. In what ways does your character compare themselves to others? Do they do this for the sake of self-validation, or self-criticism?

    Usually self-criticism, like she compares Cassandra’s strength to hers as superior, Blackwall as being a better person, Sera as being way more free-spirited. She uses these people as something to aim for though.

33. In the face of criticism, is your character defensive, self-deprecating, or willing to improve?

    Defensive, even if she knows they’re right. Then she’ll brood on it later when she’s by herself.

37. Is your character more concerned with defending their honor, or protecting their status?

    Natalia is a mess and has neither honor nor status. If she did get them though, I guess it’d be honor.

How they are recruited: 

While still in Haven, word will arrive through one of Leliana’s contacts that there seems to be someone in the Hinterlands killing both mages and Templars for some sort of sport. Upon investigation, Vaharel is found finishing off a group of both, turning over to the Inquisitor and asking what it is they want. After a bit of conversation, Vaharel will say that he was hunting down mages and Templars alike in an attempt to run into the Inquisitor themselves–he wants to join them, he says, because he wants to fight demons. If asked why, Vaharel will decline to say why specifically, but that he can be counted on in a tough fight. If recruited, Val will be pleased and meet the Inquisitor back at Skyhold. If refused, he seemed unfazed–he merely shrugs and leaves.

Where they are in Skyhold: Outside the tavern, people watching

Things they Generally Approve of: Violence and aggressive actions, executions, being rude to nobles, not being taken to the Winter Palace, loyalty to companions, Inquisitor drinking from the Well of Sorrows

Small Side Mission — 

After the events of Wicked Eyes & Wicked Hearts, Vaharel will recieve a letter from an old friend in Halamshiral. The Inquisitor will have the opportunity to encourage Val to go see what this is about, or agree with him about ignoring the past. If they choose to visit, they’ll find one of the elders, Balmorea, who helped nurse Val back to health after the recieving the burns on his chest. Balmorea asks for a small favor–the guards have been cracking down on them too hard recently, making it hard to trade their goods in the better parts of the city where nobles might stop for purchases. She requests that Val and the Inquisitor speak with the Captain of the Guard to see if they could ease up just a little. Agreeing sends the party to the guards’ barracks. If the Inquisitor passes the negotiation checks, the Guard Captain agrees to lighten up some, as things have been rather calm recently and they want to work with the citizens, not against them. If the Inquisitor fails, negotiations dissolve into a brawl, resulting in even worse sanctions for the elves. If the Inquisitor decides to let Vaharel handle it, he intimdiates the guard into revealing the reason why the restrictions are worse–a nearby Baron bribed the guards to keep some of the “riffraff” out of the marketplace. After having his hand cut off by Val, the Guard Captain gives up the name and says that the sanctions will be lifted immediately. After reporting back to Balmorea the good or bad news, the events can be discussed with Val back in Skyhold, though he quickly shuts the Inquisitor down: “Now’s not the time to talk about this. Get your own house in order before worrying about mine.”

Companion Quest — 

Sometime after his side mission, Vaharel approaches the Inquisitor ready to talk about what had happened in Halamshiral. The Baron that the Guard Captain had named was Baron Babineaux, his mother’s old employer. He blames the Baron for Lenna’s–his mother’s–death, for if she hadn’t been fired from her position, they wouldn’t have been in the slums the winter that it was purged. There’s more reasons, but Val is evasive about it: “I don’t need to talk about how horrible he is. You either trust me, or you don’t. You either help me, or you help him.”

In any case, Val requests the Inquisitor’s aid in standing up to Babineaux. The Baron is currently at his summer house in the Dales, far away from other Orlesian Lords as the Baron liked his privacy. An area then appears on the map, and upon arriving, the Inquisitor is welcomed into his home. They are to meet directly with the Baron. The longer Babineaux and the Inquisitor talk, the more aggitated Val becomes until he interrupts them with an outburst: “You lying viper! You sent my mother away because she had the audacity to go to the guards! She was going to tell them everything and you had her fired, threw her good name in the mud so no other noble would dare hire her! You caused her death, and now I will be yours.”

And with that, he decapitates Baron Babineaux in one single swing of his blade. The Inquisitor is shocked, and upon asking Val for an explanation, they recive none: “As I said before–you either trust me, or you don’t. Put me on trial if you must, but I did what’s right. We can settle this after we fight our way out of here and are back at Skyhold." Upon looting several dressers at the mansion, a ring can be found. Val takes the ring for the Inquisitor, shocked to see it and clearly upset, but urges them to get back to Skyhold quickly.

Option 1: Upon returning to Skyhold, the Inquisitor has the option of putting Vaharel on trial. If the Inquisitor chooses to put Vaharel on trial, he does not defend himself, reiterating that the Inquisitor either trusts him or doesn’t, and that his actions, regardless of their motivation, speak for themselves. They can then choose to execute Val himself, give him to Orlais to face another trial and likely hanging, banish him, or let him stay with the Inquisition under strict observation. If Vaharel is put on trial at all, the quest ends there. Val never explains his reasons, even if he stays with the Inquisition. Any romance is ended and most approval lost–he will stay at neutral approval regardless of any further decisions for the rest of their time together and will not reappear for Tresspasser. 

Option 2a: (TW FOR MENTIONS OF CHILD ABUSE) If  Vaharel is not put on trial but the ring is not found, Vaharel eventually approaches the Inquisitor to explain his actions. Babineaux was a vile man–while he never laid hands on the servants, as he deemed them below himself, he had eyes for all of his son’s noble friends when they were children. Val himself had seen the way Babineaux looked at some of the children, but it was Lenna who walked in on him and threatened him at knifepoint until he released the child. Not wanting to risk killing her in an obvious manner, Babineaux had his mother fired and refused to rehire her on the following season, making sure that no other noble did as well. He even went so far as to suggest that the slums needed purging to the guards, in the hopes that Lenna would be killed. Years later when Val tried finding a job on his own at Babineaux’s mansion, he tried to blackmail him into getting a position, only to be chased out of town.

Val then thanks the Inquisitor for supporting him and trusting him to act as he saw fit. He admits that the Inquisitor is the first person in a long time that he’s truly trusted, and would die for the friendship that they’ve created. If in a romance, he says, "I love you,” for the first time, smiling a little shyly but appearing more at ease and open.

Ultimately, Vaharel’s attitude towards nobles remains much the same, though a romanced or high approval Inquisitor can influence where Val directs his anger at the upper class. He will stay with the Inquisitor post-Inquisition, and will have never left their side.

Note: As a default, events taking place post-Inquisition or post-companion quest have this ending.

Option 2b: If Vaharel is not put on trial at all and the ring was found, he approaches the Inquisitor some time later with the same information as in option 2a, but the Inquisitor also has the option to ask about the ring they found. After hesitating, Val admits that the ring was his mothers. He’d always thought that his mother had just lost it, but now he supposes that Babineaux took it at some point. It’s a very expensive looking ring, very different from the silver one he wears that his mother loved–it’s delicate with an emerald stone with diamonds encrusted into the gold band. It appears to be some sort of engagement ring–which is why Val is surprised, as his mother had never mentioned his father, let alone getting married. The Inquisitor can ask what Val intends on doing with it–Val muses that he could hawk it for quite a bit of gold, or maybe try and track down who made it. Encouraging him either way ends with Vaharel shrugging, saying that time will decide what he does.

The next time Val is spoken with, he’s clearly aggitated. Upon further questioning, he reveals that he went to get it appraised in Orlais, but the jewler recognized the mark on the inside of the ring and identified who made it. The ring was made by a jeweler in Tevinter and is most definitely an engagement ring–and for quite the rich noble, given the craftsmenship. Val isn’t sure what to do with this information, as he has no way of pursuing the contacts. Three options are then available: A war table mission with either Josephine or Leliana offering to dig into the ring’s history, or suggesting that Val talk with Dorian to see if he has any connections that could help.

Option 1: The war table missions result in nothing but confusion–Josephine recieves no straight answers, as the jeweler refuses to discuss his clients and no noble of hers recognizes the ring. Leliana doesn’t get much further, as her spies are able to break into the jeweler’s records and find the order, but are unable to trace it much further, as it was placed under a very thorough false identity. Frustrated, Val decides to simply sell the ring–it’s too much of a hassle, and he’d rather not think of the mystery each time he looks at it.

Option 2: If the Inquisitor approaches Dorian, a cutscene will trigger where Vaharel is trying to get him to agree to investigate the ring. As Val and Dorian (by default), do not have the best relationship, Dorian has no reason to help him and refuses. The Inquisitor can step in and tell Dorian that this is important, which Val follows up that he’ll owe Dorian any favor he wishes. Reluctantly he agrees to send a few letters to his contacts, though he makes no promises of getting any news has he hasn’t spoken to several of these people in ages.

After leaving and returning to Skyhold twice, Dorian and Val can be seen talking in the library. When the Inquisitor approaches, Val quickly tries to shove the letters back to Dorian and leaves. Dorian then tells the Inquisitor that he got some rather surprising responses, but that it’s not his place to air Vaharel’s issues. Chasing down Vaharel, he reluctantly admits the truth of the letters: his mother’s ring is an engagement ring made for Magister Kryllios Karas, a human Lateans mage and land owner outside the city of Marothius. One of Dorian’s contacts was a friend of Magister Karas, and remembered being shown the ring, but had never heard who Karas had given it to. Val isn’t sure on how to proceed–he cannot just ignore what he knows, but he also can’t imagine facing such a man alone. The Inquisitor then can offer to support Vaharel if he wishes to meet his father, agreeing to use Inquisiton resources to get a letter to him.

Vaharel meets Magister Karas, who decided to accept his invitation to see the Inquisition for himself. The meeting is awkward at first, with Val simply staring and the Inquisitor filling the silence. After a blatant prompting from Karas, Val produces the engagement ring, giving it over and saying it was his mothers. Karas looks from the ring to Vaharel before tearing up. The Inquisitor then excuses themselves and lets Val and Karas talk in the Inquisition gardens below, though they notice that while Val seems uncomfortable, there is quite a bit of curiosity there as well.

Later, if asked how things went with his father, Vaharel replies that they’re still getting to know each other, but that Karas–not quite yet close enough to bring himself to call him father–has returned to Tevinter in the hopes of finding a way to make Val his legitimate heir. Apparently Kryllios had fallen in love with Lenna and the pair were to be wed, despite the fact that it was against all laws and customs. But Kryllios’ father and oldest brother were brutally murdered by mage-killers, leaving Kryllios to inherit his family’s estates and his father’s seat in the Magisterium. Lenna decided on her own accord to leave, as Kryllios didn’t need the kind of negative attention brought to him by an elven wife, nor the distraction of having a child around when he was dealing with assassins and murderers. She fled south, and Kryllios had never seen or heard from her again.

Vaharel decides to give his father a chance, though the fact that it might make him nobility–and half human–causes him to reassess his beliefs and views of nobles as a whole.

At the end of Inquisition, Vaharel leaves with Dorian to go to Tevinter, where he plans to get to know his father better. As it turns out, Karas is interested in joining Dorian’s effort to change Tevinter for the better, hoping that what happened to him and Lenna doesn’t have to happen for the next generation, and that his son might find some acceptance in the future. Vaharel returns in Tresspasser, having taken up his father’s last name and has a warmer personality–apparently, having family does wonders to his temperment, and he finds himself at ease with his new role of caring for the farmers on his father’s fields and making sure all their needs are met. “It’s hard work, but it’s honest–my father’s honest. It’s more than I could’ve ever expected for a noble. They’re not all like that, but… well, I suppose some can be. More should be.”

Highever, some time ago

Highever swarmed with guards ever since word arrived about the attack on Houndshome and the disappearance of Ferelden's youngest Royal. The little village was still smouldering when Princess Eleanor rode up to it, hair streaming behind her in the wind and rain.

"Your Highness," the local magistrate greeted her with a nervous bow, watching as the princess dismounted from the Ferelden charger, striding through the mud towards him. "We're still trying to determine what happened."

"I'll tell you what happened," Eleanor snapped, handing the Magistrate the reins to the horse. "Slavers. That's what happened. And you let them take your Prince." The Magistrate withered under the Princess's angry look. He mumbled an apology, and pointed towards the Inn.

"Th-they were at the Inn. There's a few Inquisition survivors that might-"

Eleanor glared at him and the Magistrate shut his mouth with an audible clack of teeth.

"Why is the Inquisition in my teyrnir without anyone telling me?" she asked, lifting an eyebrow.

"I..don't know," the man admitted, glancing towards the Inn nervously. "I can find out, your Highness. I'll go find out, right away."

"Do so," Eleanor said. "And then tend your resignation as Magistrate. I'll find your replacement once this mess has been resolved." First a prince kidnapped, then an armed force already on tenuous agreement with Ferelden was found mysteriously at the scene? Someone was going to give her answers, and Maker help those who didn't.

Striding through muck and rubble to the survivors, Eleanor watched with no small pleasure as the Inquisition soldiers eyes widened and they tried to stand to salute.

"Shut up," she said before they could start babbling. "You are going to tell me what happened, why you're here and which direction they went, and then you are going to be escorted to the Frostbacks to prevent this Maker-damned alliance from slipping any further."

Once strong allies, since the Inquisitor had handed the effective control of the Inquisition to that De Fer woman, things had gone downhill. Finding an armed Inquisition force in her terynir had just stripped any remaining goodwill from Eleanor.

"You," she said, jabbing a finger at a dwarf in Inquisition armor. "Talk."

"Ma'am," the dwarf said, throwing a salute despite the thick bandage around his hand. "We apologize ma'am. Master Hanin was out to visit the Springs here, we were his escort. He was with your brother and someone else when the Vints showed up."

El watched the dwarf through narrow eyes, turning that new piece of information over. The Inquisitor's son who rarely left the nest of Skyhold was also taken?

"With respect, I would ask that we are allowed to join the search, it is our fault that Master Hanin-"

"No," El said sharply. "You had your chance, and this is still Ferelden soil, in case you've forgotten. Moreover," she added, starting to pace in front of the sorry looking soldiers. "Someone chose to attack the Inn instead of the farms which would be an easier target. Someone knew there was a target worth the risk of attacking in town."

The dwarf blanched, and El's lips curled into a tight, angry smile.

"Had the Inquisition not tresspassed on my land my brother would be safe. Now," she said, turning to face the inquisition troops square on. She crossed her arms over her chest and glared at them.

"Who was this 'other' person? who was taken with them?"

The innkeeper, sitting off to the side as the local healer tended to him, cleared his throat.

"An Elf your highness. White hair, tiny, didn't speak a word, though she knew how to write." He frowned slightly. "one of those Dalish, I think. I didn't know they even knew how to write. She helped the Prince since he was injured. He said something about owing her for her help."

"Thank you," El said to the man, the sharpness of her voice easing. "You have been //actually// helpful, unlike so many here today."  The Inquisition soldiers shrank slightly as she glared their way.

"Did you see which direction the Vints left in?" She asked, walking over to crouch in front of the innkeep. The man was sitting on a bench by the Inn's door, and he had a nasty bruise spreading across his jaw to his face.

"No my lady, but my boy Nethen said he spotted a ship at anchor out by Mabari point. With no colours flying."

El nodded, and took the innkeep's hand, giving it a grateful squeeze. He smiled through the pain and squeezed her hand back.

"Thank you," she said quietly. "I'll send builders to help repair your Inn. You've been of great service." 

"We will never forget what we owe your Mother," he murmured. "I only wish I had been able to take down one of those Vint bastards before they got to your brother."

"I'll be sure to mark the first one I kill as yours," El assured the Innkeeper. She gave his hand a last squeeze, and stood. There sat a real Ferelden, unlike the sorry bastards who had decided to allow the Inquisition to come and go as it pleased without notifying the Crown or Teryn either.

Days passed in hurried searching and preparation. Agents of the crown spread out into the Free Marches to check ports and known trade routes for any news of a ship matching the one spotted at Highever's coast. Quiet inqueries returned vague information at best. The ship was bound for Tevinter as expected, but there was no manifest, no name to track.

Whoever had greased the palms had done it too well, leaving Eleanor increasingly frustrated.

This was her baby brother, someone had taken him. It didn't matter that he was an adult, he was still the small baby brother she'd carefully held on her lap and who had listened intently to her halting words as she practiced her reading. This was the boy who she'd missed desperately when he had to go away to that damn circle.

Her baby brother was out there, injured, and in the hands of Vint slavers who likely had no idea who they had chanced upon.

"You'll wear a hole in that lovely rug the way you're pacing."

El stopped, whirling towards the voice. In her hand was a knife, ready to defend herself. After what had happened to Rahlen, El had no longer gone anywhere unarmed. Not even to bed.

Standing in the doorway of El's study was an elf with wild red hair and a face full of freckles. But it was the strange armor the elf wore and the map in her hands that drew Eleanor's attention.

"Who are you?" El asked. "And that's my map." She didn't bother asking how the elf had gotten so far into the castle. Eleanor doubted she'd ever receive a satisfactory answer.

"Our map," the elf said, glancing up. She smiled and winked. "Listen up princess," somehow when the elf said that word it sounded like an insult. "My sister got caught up in whatever happened at Dogs'breath village. Normally I leave her alone, but now some abyss-damned slavers have her."

The smile slipped from the elf's face, ice replaced warmth, and Eleanor adjusted her appraisal of the woman. It seemed they had a common goal, one that El could appreciate the urgency of.

"And you want to join me?" Eleanor asked. "Why should I let you?"

When the elf laughed, there was no humour in it.

"'Let' me? Sweetie. I walk my own path. Right now my path lines up with yours, but there is no 'letting' me join you. You can walk along next to me, and I'll tell you where the ship was headed, or you can pretend that you don't need my help, and I'll rescue my sister on my own."

Eleanor swallowed the hope that bloomed in her chest, and hid it behind a frown. Stepping forward, the princess snatched the map from the elf's hands.

"How do you know where they are?"

The elf spread her hands, revealing more of the strange armor she wore under a dark cloak. Silvered leather and metal hugged the woman's thighs and arms, leather bound around her torso and knives hung at either hip. It was elven inspired but... From where?

"I have a contact with a shared interest in seeing slavery eradicated," the elf said. "And the Imperium crumble, but one thing at a time."

Eleanor watched the elf for any sign of duplicity. The freckled face might as well have been a mask for all the emotion it showed. Frowning, the princess gauged the risk with the offer, but they had no other leads. This was the one chance to bring Rahlen home.

"And why are you here if you know where they are?" Eleanor asked. "Why are you not on your way yourself?"

The elf pushed off the doorframe, stepping within El's armreach.

"Because not even Shemlen deserve slavery." The elf reached out with a finger and tapped El's nose. "Call me Rasha. My things are already on your ship. We should leave soon, Ellie." The elf smiled again at the confused expression on El's face.

"We leave at dawn," Eleanor said. "And you aren't sleeping in the castle tonight."

"You say that as though I might want to," Rasha said, wrinkling her nose. "It smells like wet dogs. How can any of you stand it?"

Also try and get through the main story of Love and start on the Tresspasser part. I seem to have hit a block with it, but I think it’s also that I don’t want the story to end.

Given how intensive Uni is though, I’ll just be happy if I can slip in a bit of writing here and there. I’m going to try and be brave and take prompts because they scare me a little, but if 2016 was the year of “Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway”, I want 2017 to be “Feel the Fear 2: Go Big or Go Home”.

Best Story Of The Year?

An Abyss of His Fears. It started out as a little one shot inspired by a couple of comments from @shadowpyxy and turned into this wonderfully angsy 3-parter that people loved. It also got my first critical comment which would have been devastating if it hadn’t been so ridiculous (”your characters shouldn’t complain about a choice the game forces on you; also Cullen is perfect and I will complain about him doing anything problematic”) and as someone once said, if people are complaining you must be doing something right.

Most Popular Story Of The Year?

Going by kudos it’s Love in the Time of Corypheus, but I know most of my Tumblr friends haven’t actually read it. Also it’s the only long fic. Otherwise it seems to be Something in the Way She Moves Me or An Abyss of His Fears.

Story of Mine Most Under-appreciated By The Universe, IMO:

ALL OF THEM! Actually, it’s probably The Scars We See and Those We Cannot. It was lovely to write and just such a nice little piece of Cullen and Sai.

Most Fun Story To Write:

Anything with the kids. Probably Sick Days because it really was inspired so much by my youngest oddaughter and I just knew Cullen would get the worst of it.

Story With The Single Sexiest Moment:

I’m still quite shy about writing smut, but it has to be Chapter 30 of Love, A Modest Proposal, because it starts so angsty, gets steamy and ends with them cracking each other (and my beta) up. It’s definitely one of my favourite Cullen moments.
