Summer of Love:- Cramps

Jack Hughes x F!Reader

AN:- I’m sorry this took me a while, I kept changing my mind on some things. Thank you @k1ng0fmyheart for requesting, I hope you like it 🫶🏼I am making my way through the inbox, so if you have requested anything I haven’t forgotten!!

I know in the worlds they don’t have friendlies during the off season but for the sake of this series we’re gonna pretend they do!!

After sunset Jack and Mackenzie decided to head back to shore. Jack pulled the anchor up, as Mackenzie folded the blankets.

Jack talked about how excited he was for world friendlies but was cut off by Mackenzie groaning, he looked back to see her bent over. “Kenz, you ok?” Jack walked over to her, rubbing the small of her back.

“Mhm” Mackenzie hummed out, Jack sighed, he hated seeing his girl in pain and not being able to do anything.

“Tell me what you need bubs” Jack kissed her head as she stood up straight, leaning back into him. Jack wrapped his arms around her, placing his hands on her lower stomach. Mackenzie moaned quietly as Jack applied slight pressure to her stomach.

“That helping baby?” Jack cooed, applying more pressure and moving his hands around. Mackenzie groaned as Jack hit a particular sore spot, “is there sore bubs?” Jack asked as Mackenzie nodded. “Hmm how about we head back to the house, get changed into comfy clothes and cuddle?” Jack suggested.

Mackenzie nodded, leaning back to kiss him, Jack kissed back before pulling away.

“Come on then beautiful, let’s get you home” Jack kissed her cheek before leading her to the drivers bench. Jack opened his arms inviting Kenzie to sit on his lap as he started driving back to shore.

Mackenzie whined as the waves began to get choppy, Jack soothed her the best he could whilst concentrating on the water in front. “shh it’s ok baby, we’ll be back soon I promise” Jack cooed as he saw the dock appearing in front, frowning when he saw a figure standing in the shadowy part.

Subconsciously Jack wrapped his arms tighter around Mackenzie. Jack asks Kenzie if she could pull out his phone to call Quinn. Mackenzie grabbed his phone, smiling at the background picture. It was a picture of the two taken by Trevor a couple months after they started dating, Mackenzie was cuddled into Jack's side laughing, Jack had his arm around her looking down at her laughing outside a club they’d gone to celebrate Freya's birthday. Neither of them realised Trevor had taken the picture.

Mackenzie unlocked his phone using their anniversary as his passcode. Quinn answers on the second ring, “hey bro, everything alright?” Quinn’s voice came through the speaker.

“Hey Quinny, erm no? There’s someone hanging around by the dock, looks a lil sus” Jack spoke back, turning the boat around. “What? Are you two ok? Who is it?” Trevor spoke, taking over from Quinn.

“Yeah, yeah Kenz and I are fine. I just don’t wanna dock with it being just us two. I don’t know who it is” Jack replied. “What? Trev now’s not the time” Quinn mumbled.

Mackenzie giggled at the two, “aww is big scary Trevy-bear gonna come rescue us?” Kenzie teased. Quinn laughed as he shut the back door, Trevor and Luke following behind. “Hell yeah he is, he's the biggest bravest scariest bear around” Trevor played along.

“Mhm so brave that he screamed and run away from a spider in the bathroom” Luke teased laughing along with Kenzie. “Yeah yeah whatever, look we’re nearly there so turn back” Quinn told Jack, the middle Hughes followed instructions turning back to the dock.

“Are they still there?” Kenzie asked, “yeah, Luke and Trev are going over now” Quinn responded. “WHAT?! You let lukey go?” Jack exclaimed.

Quinn sighed, “Jack baby, he’ll be fine! Trev’s there” Kenzie squeezed his hand. “OH MY GOD” Luke shouted, Jack and Kenzie both looked at each other worried.

“Luke… LUKE are you ok?” Quinn shouted, Jack and Kenzie now coming into view of the dock seeing Luke on the floor. “Quinn, Quinn what’s happening? Is Lukey—” Jack asked before getting cut off by Quinn and Trevor laughing.

“Sky-Skylar you scared me!!” Luke exclaimed, Mackenzie felt Jack physically relax at the sound of Luke’s voice. “What’s Sky doing out here alone?” Mackenzie thought aloud. Jack shrugged before docking, helping Mackenzie out before climbing out himself.

Jack offered Mackenzie his hand which she happily grabbed as they made their way to the others. “Sky? What are you doing out here?” Mackenzie again voiced her thoughts from earlier. Skylar sighed as Mackenzie brought her into a brief hug before examining her for any injuries. “I came looking for you, these last few days have been weird between us and I wanted to talk, apologise” Skylar explained.

Mackenzie hugged her again, “but why are you out here?” Jack asked. “Kaylee told me she saw you and Mackenzie leaving the house, I thought you’d be at the dock but when I saw the boat gone I’d figured I’d wait for you to get back” Skylar explained again as they all made their way back to the house.

Mackenzie stopped walking with Jack, squeezing his hand and groaning again. Everyone turned to look at her as Jack began to massage her stomach again. “What’s up Kenzie?” Quinn asked.

“She’s cramping again” Jack explained, the boys nodded as Skylar looked at her sister in sympathy. “Sky, would it be ok if we talk tomorrow? I’m cramping so much right now” Mackenzie explained. “Yeah, of course! Do you want me to get Sebastian?” Skylar asked.

Jack belly laughed as all the boys frowned looking confused, “Sebastian?” Trevor piped up. “Sebastian the plushy heating pad lobster” Skylar explained. “Rriiigghtttt” Luke nodded as he opened the back door.

“Anyway, glad everyone is ok. I’m gonna head back to the boys” Quinn said, walking away Luke and Trevor following behind him.

“I’ll get Sebastian heated and meet you upstairs” Jack smiled, kissing Kenzie’s head before heading to the kitchen leaving the Havener sisters alone on the back porch. “I’ll leave you to it then, but maybe we can spend the day together tomorrow?” Skylar suggested looking hopeful. “I’d love that Sky” Mackenzie smiled, happy that her sister had extended an olive branch.

Mackenzie gave Skylar a hug, kissing her forehead before heading upstairs, she didn’t get far before someone cleared their throat behind her.

“Erm Kenzie?” Luke's voice spoke through the stairwell. Mackenzie turned around “hey lukey, what’s up” Mackenzie noticed his rosy cheeks, furrowing her eyebrows. “Erm you have a little something” Luke pointed to her butt. Mackenzie frowned, “what?” She asked before it dawned on her. Oh no is all she thought before running up to hers and Jack's shared bathroom.

Mackenzie sat on the toilet, to sort herself out, but realised she needed a change of underwear.

“JACK” Mackenzie shouted out, waiting for a response. Mackenzie sighed, “JACK” Mackenzie shouted louder, hearing footsteps coming down the hallway. “Kenzie?” Quinn’s muffled voice said. “Quinn? Can you get Jack for me please?” Mackenzie pleaded. “Yeah sure, JAck” Quinn’s voice got quieter as he walked away.

Mackenzie waited, sighing. A faint knock was heard at the door, “Kenzie?” Quinn spoke, “Jack’s not here.” “What?! He was here 5 minutes ago” Mackenzie worried, “Luke said he’s gone to the store” Quinn explained, Mackenzie groaned out partly due to her cramps but partly because she was stuck until he came back. “Is Kaylee there?” Mackenzie shouted back. “Erm yeah, KAYLEE COME HERE” Quinn shouted, a minute later Kaylee was bounding into the bedroom, “Kenny-bear where you at?” Kaylee called.

“In the bathroom, can you pass me some underwear and a change of pants?” Kenzie asked, “yeah babe, where are they?” Kaylee began rummaging around.

“In the dresser” Mackenzie called back, soon an arm appeared through the door frame, “here you go babe” Kaylee passed clothes to her. “Thanks gorgeous, is jack back yet?” Mackenzie asked as she changed.

“Erm I think so, I just heard the door go” Kaylee popped her head out into the hallway, seeing Jack carrying a gift bag. Kaylee quirked her brow at him “I see you’ve got Sebastian” she laughed, “ yeah and a care package for Kenz” Jack explained before heading into their room. Kenzie was leaving the bathroom as Jack walked in, “hey babe, I got you some supplies” Jack passed her the bag, and watched eagerly as Kenzie went through it, frowning when he noticed the tears falling down her cheeks.

“What’s wrong baby? You don’t like it?” Jack worried, he’d seen a tik tok of a boyfriend making a care package for his girlfriend during that time and wanted to do the same. “No, no it’s just no one’s ever done anything like that for me before, it’s so thoughtful J I love it” Mackenzie explained, “damn hormones” she muttered.

Jack laughed before pulling her into a hug, kissing her head. “What do you need now bubs?” Jack asked, guiding her to the bed. “Cuddles?” Mackenzie pouted, Jack pulled her into bed with him, Mackenzie snuggling into his side as he placed Sebastian on her back, massaging her front. Loading up Netflix, Jack clicked on unsolved mysteries, opening a bag of m&m’s and feeding Mackenzie a few.

“I wuv you” Mackenzie muffled out, with a mouthful of m&m’s. Jack laughed “i wuv you too” he mocked back, kissing her head again.

For the rest of the evening the couple stayed as they were, Jack occasionally getting out to reheat Sebastian or to make a cup of hot chocolate. Mackenzie occasionally getting up to change her tampon, or the stretch. It wasn’t long into the 7th episode that Mackenzie drifted off, Jack smiled at her, wondering how he’d gotten so lucky.

Nearly 3 years on and Jack could still feel the butterflies in his stomach when she told him she loved him, or when she’d just look at him and smile. Jack would bet on everything he had, that Mackenzie was the one, and he’d be damned if he didn’t treat her as anything but his whole world including getting up at 3 am to reheat her lobster. Ellen and Jim had always lectured the boys on the importance of treating their partners right, respecting women, showing them you love them with little things. Jack liked to think he was doing a pretty good job at that.

Mackenzie woke up the next morning feeling worse than yesterday, day 3 was always the worst for her. Mackenzie began patting the space next to her looking for Jack, the door creaking open made her shoot her head up. Watching as Jack came in with a plate of pancakes in one hand, an iced coffee in the other.

“Morning snickerdoodle” Jack placed the drink and plate on the nightstand before leaning down to kiss her. “Mm morning lovebug” Mackenzie hummed back. Jack laughed as he pulled away, “lovebug? That’s a new one” he said as Mackenzie went to brush her teeth and change her tampon, washing her hands before she climbed back into bed.

“You’re one to talk with snickerdoodle” Mackenzie laughed, “how are you feeling?” Jack smirked as he saw her eyeing up the pancakes on the nightstand, “go ahead babe they’re for you” Jack passed her the plate. Mackenzie frowned “did you not get yourself some?”

“I already ate mine, thought I’d treat my girl to breakfast in bed” Jack hummed climbing back in to cuddle her, Kaylee and Trevor joined them soon after breakfast to cuddle and chill. The boys being roped into face masks, awful karaoke and plenty of cuddles.

Both Kaylee and Mackenzie fell asleep cuddling into each other, Jack smiled at the two. “You’re one lucky man Jack Hughes” Trevor hummed out, “that I am trev, that I am” Jack smiled, leaning in to brush the hair out of her face and kiss her scar, smiling wider as she subconsciously scrunched her nose.

Washington Nationals-Minnesota Twins Series Preview

4.21.23-Trevor Williams RHP (1-1) 3.52 ERA Vs. Tyler Mahle RHP (1-2) 4.11 ERA

4.22.23-Chad Kuhl RHP (0-1) 8.59 ERA Vs. Pablo Lopez RHP (1-1) 1.73 ERA

4.23.23-Patrick Corbin LHP (1-2) 6.30 ERA Vs. Sonny Gray RHP (2-0) 0.82 ERA

The Nationals At A Glance- The Nationals figure to be one of the worst teams in the National League this year. They have lost six of their last seven games and have fallen so low after winning the World Series in 2019. The roster is full of prospects and castoffs from other teams. Victor Robles is the most notable hitter on the team and is hitting .288 on the year. Jeimer Candelario is the everyday third basemen and leads the team with three homers and nine RBI. Keibert Ruiz is a name to remember. He was a top prospect in the Dodgers system then sent to DC in the Max Scherzer trade. He should be a good catcher for years to come. Washington also has guys like Michael Chavis, Dominic Smith, and Jeter Downs, who either had good years with other teams or are washed up prospects. The Nationals starting staff has a 4.95 ERA, which is twenty-second in baseball. The Twins will miss MacKenzie Gore, who was the top piece in the Juan Soto trade. Josiah Gray was another part of the Max Scherzer trade and has a 3.74 ERA. Patrick Corbin has been a shell of himself since the World Series run. The Washington bullpen is in the middle of baseball with a 3.86 ERA. Kyle Finnegan has locked down three saves, but has a 9.95 ERA. Carl Edwards has been the closer as of late and has given up one run over 8 1/3 innings. Mason Thompson and Hobie Harris have been good late options out of the bullpen.

The Twins At A Glance- The Twins didn’t have the best of road trips with a (3-4) record and they lost four of the last five games. The team returns home for a ten-game homestand. The Twins will likely activate Jorge Polanco from the injured list and sent Edouard Julien back to St. Paul. Alex Kirilloff and Josh Winder are on rehab stints in St. Paul and will spend a bit more time in AAA. Kenta Maeda’s x-rays were negative after taking a comebacker off his leg on Thursday. It is unknown if he will need an injured list stint of not. The Twins will likely sent Brent Headrick to St. Paul because they need an extra arm or two. The bullpen had to cover six innings after Maeda left yesterday. Christian Vazquez continues to hit with a .318 average through fourteen games. Nick Gordon has had a tough start to the year and is hitting 5-for-46 (.109). The Twins starting staff owns a 2.68 ERA, which is second-best in the big leagues. Jorge Lopez hasn’t allowed a run through 7 2/3 innings on the year. The Twins good bullpen arms should be ready for this series. Jorge Alcala, Jovani Moran, and Emilio Pagan threw over forty pitches on Thursday and won’t be available for Friday’s game.

What To Watch For- Each team has won nine games in the Expos/Nationals-Twins all-time series. These two teams last played in 2019 and the Nationals won two out of three games in September before going on that World Series run. Washington is (7-2) in their last nine games against Minnesota. Trevor Williams threw seven innings and allowed a run in his only start against the Twins. Tyler Mahle is (3-1) with a 4.50 ERA in five starts against the Nats. Pablo Lopez is (4-2) with a 4.57 ERA in twelve starts versus Washington. Patrick Corbin threw six innings and gave up three runs in his lone start versus the Twins. Sonny Gray is (2-1) with a 4.15 ERA in seven career starts against the Nationals. Temperatures for all three games are expected to be in the 40′s. I think they will get all the games in, but it will be chilly.

Episode 203: Good Mother

Sorry so late this week!! I had a deadline for work that kept me away from this early in the week, and Tumblr has been mean tonight. Kudos to @tasyfa for helping me with some of the transcripts while I was stuck working!!

EPISODE SUMMARY:

Determined to regain control of her life in the aftermath of Noah’s death, Isobel (Lily Cowles) makes a risky choice despite its potential consequences. Meanwhile, Alex (Tyler Blackburn) and Michael (Michael Vlamis) work together to unravel the mystery surrounding the night Nora’s (guest star Kayla Ewell) spaceship crashed in 1947. Elsewhere, Liz (Jeanine Mason) makes a surprising confession when Cameron (guest star Riley Voelkel) shows up looking for answers about Max (Nathan Dean). Heather Hemmens, Amber Midthunder and Trevor St. John also star. Jeffrey Hunt directed the episode written by Deirdre Mangan & Carina Adly MacKenzie (#203.) Original airdate 3/30/2020.

DETAILS:

Aliens in the crash are always portrayed as wearing all white.

There's also a silvery gleam on the faces of Nora and Louise following the crash.

Harlan Manes (first introduced in the alien autopsy scene in 1x07) and Hector Valenti (first mentioned in the pilot by Jesse Manes, but visually introduced here) are shown as having both a partnership and a difference in perspective, with Hector being more sympathetic to the aliens from the start - it mirrors what we know about Jim and Jesse's relationship.

Mysterious alien figure in white hood (probably played by Nathan Parsons, but unlikely to actually be Max (see @latessitrice meta) touches Nora's shoulder and she looks pained, then attacks and burns Hector alive, before disappearing into thin air.

Nora is shot in her shoulder.

Liz sent Alex to find Michael at the cave.

The pods "regenerate cells at the same rate as they degrade" keeping them in stasis. The theory of the electrical current is that it will speed up the regeneration so instead of stasis, Max might improve.

Searching for info about Nora led Alex to a sophisticated firewall, which meant that someone was trying to hide information about her.

Jenna's fake energy drinks are called "Speed Demon"

Mimi DeLuca says she was "nowhere" (and then she looks up at the stars). She was wearing the same nightgown and robe as when she disappeared (white...like the aliens in 1947), but instead of bare feet, she had on a pair of elaborate blue and white cowboy boots

Jenna told Sheriff Valenti that Mimi recited the plot from the film Starship Troopers during the car ride into town "like she lived it", with all the voices, but did not provide any information about where she’d been. Sheriff Valenti implies that this is typical behavior from Mimi.

Michael says he's been parked at the pony for a few weeks. Maria says that Mimi was gone for a month. That means that another 2 weeks have passed. (I.e., Max has been dead for 6 weeks now.)

Maria says that they found her mom on I-40 (by the Roswell sign). Also in 2x01 Rosa indicated that she and Liz were on I-40 when they saw Flint - Rosa put together that it was the most direct route to Area 51...however, I-40 does not go through Roswell. In fact, it is over 100 miles from Roswell to I-40 (north on 285). However, it is the most direct route to Area 51 from Roswell.

Isobel points out that Mimi DeLuca waking up in the desert with no memory is similar to what happened to her when Noah took over her body. Michael doesn't believe that they are the same situation though.

Rosa is about to drink spiked coffee when Liz brings her the art supplies. After Liz leaves, she pours it out without drinking it.

Isobel is packing up all of the photos of her and Noah (most look like vacation photos). She hesitates on the photo of them with Max at the wedding that we previously saw in 2x01 at Noah's funeral.

Isobel's baby is now 7 weeks (consistent with the other time frames) and is now the size of a blueberry.

Isobel drinks the rest of the alien death serum and immediately gets cramps/pain in her womb. And then Max's hallucination appears.

Isobel tells not!Max that she has been microdosing with the serum for weeks (2 weeks, based on the timeline) and it hasn't worked.

Not!Max does tell her to call Kyle (i.e, her subconscious knows she should, but she's not listening).

Michael tells Jenna that Max is in Mexico (at first).

Mimi is "hydrated and healthy" and she never felt unsafe.

She thinks she was only gone for a night, coming to see Maria when Jenna found her.

Maria asked Mimi whether Jenna lent the boots to her and Mimi declared they were hers

Liz is surrounded by monitors with alienesque symbols on them (or maybe just The Science!) See photo:

When the alarm sounds Liz looks at her computer screen and reacts - likely a security camera.

When Alex arrives at the Bunker and sees the binder left for him, the computers are on and there is a map showing. See photo:

I tried to figure out what city it is on his computer screen, but no luck. If anyone figures it out, send me an ask & let me know & I'll blast it out!

The 3-ring binder left for Alex, which looked approx. ¾ full with paper documents, was marked on the front:

The text was white on a dark green background that appeared to be a printed label that had been affixed to the front of the binder. The body of the binder was light grey, with a partially shaded circular diagram in the lower center of the front that appeared to be part of the binder itself rather than a later addition like the label.

The Post-It note left on the binder for Alex said, "What side of history do you want to be on?"

There was also a marking on the spine of the binder: CF-143-3453-C78. This is probably a file or record reference, with CF standing for Caulfield. The reference would be visible when the binder was housed on a shelf, allowing easy identification.

When Alex flipped open the binder, the visible portion of the top page read as follows:

Liz explains The Science to Jenna:

"3 years ago I hypothesized that if I introduced a rare protein to destroyed stem cells they'd regenerate. And I was right. My team in Denver brought dead cells back to life. Rat cells, but, I mean, still, the applications are immeasurable… until our study got shut down. They said it's for ethics reasons, but I think it's because it threatened big pharma. Then a few weeks ago, Kyle found that the pods contain a sort of alien cousin to my regenerative protein. When Max healed Rosa, his electric charge amplified the process. If we can replicate that, then, we can accelerate his recovery, so, I am testing out pig hearts to see…" discussion about pig hearts/human hearts/different kinds of smart…

Liz says she has a few hours before she has to "record the electromagnetic charge interval"

Jenna says that Liz reminds her of Charlie.

Charlie used to rant about gene therapy

Jesse says he requested no visitors until "his brain starts to follow his orders".

He keeps periodically hitting the morphine drip with Alex in the room, though he was ignoring it before Alex got there.

Jesse describes the opening scene of the episode. And then tells Alex "Tripp was never the same".

Rosa hears Max call out to her (while awake) "Rosa! Help! You're the only one!"

Jenna says that her dad brought her and Charlie to Roswell when they were kids. That they were obsessed with the crash and aliens and the X-Files and it was the perfect trip. It's why she came to Roswell after leaving the military. "It was like trying to go back in time, somehow."

"Time Travel really messed with you. I am eight years older than my older sister. She used to be my hero. She was kinetic, disruptive, cool. Now that I'm an adult I'm pretty sure she's bipolar, and she needs help. And if I try to save Max I'm letting Rosa twist in the wind, so, hence the wine ready in my drawer."

Maria is going through a box labeled "Mom's Stuff" in the Pony when she sees Rosa.

"I'm turning into my mom. I lost time at the gala...Michael's hand...I'm seeing things!"

What Valenti says about Noah's death:

"The M.E., Dr. Holden, listed Noah's cause of death as cardiac arrest due to lightning strike. (note: cardiac arrest = heart attack. Same way Max died.). No other abnormalities were listed. But that's not consistent with the crime scene photos. You see these ligature marks on his wrists and ankles. …. These marks are consistent with zip ties. And these with struggling against police-issue handcuffs. Like Max's.".

Isobel blames it on their sex toys.

What Max said to the grocery clerk "¿Tienes carne sin preservativos?" (Meat without a condom).

About Max's nightmare:

"You remember when I used to come in and sleep on your floor?"

"You used to have a nightmare. You were alone in a cold, dark room and there was something… You couldn't get up. You were…"

"Chained to the floor. I'd wake up all freaked out and run to your room."

Rosa's nightmare:

"I need your help, Rosa."

"Look, I'm not gonna help you die. I have been drinking so that I don't dream."

"I know that."

"It's like you're getting stronger. I hear you now when I'm awake."

"You're right. Something is making me stronger. I feel things. That's why I'm calling for you. Something is wrong with Isobel. Even in the pod I sense it. She's dying. Please."

Liz thinks that Max was able to reach out to save Isobel because the electricity is making him stronger in the pod.

Maria confessed to her mother that she had thought she might be getting sick too, Mimi said Maria would not get lost because she was protected, and reached for the resin pendant with the anti-alien pollen flower that Maria was wearing as usual. When Mimi seemed to go to sleep, Maria removed the necklace and placed it on her mother.

Flashing back to the night of the crash, Nora seems to be tying down the tarp on the back of the truck when Tripp approaches her. He feigns an offer to assist her and then grabs her and orders his men to move in so that they can take her and the truck back to base. Louise appears and black-canary-screams to push them away (sound waves, I presume). She is shot in the stomach/chest. Nora pulls her into the truck and drives them away.

The newspaper clip Michael found is dated October 12, 1948, two days before Nora was captured.

Last scene - Nora is clearly driving the truck with her powers, as she has both her arms around Louise. They approach a cabin and we're introduced to Roy Bronson, who offers to help.

Meanwhile the annual pumpkin chunking contest was the main attraction as expected! Pumpkin chunkers arrived from far and wide with their pumpkins and their pumpkin-lurching apparatuses. The prize for best pumpkin chunked went to the Long Family. Their farm foreman Roy Bronson credited his friend and neighbor, a young woman who declined to be named, for the Long's pumpkin chunking victory.

When asked what he'd do with the prize money, Bronson declared that he would "purchase ingredients (for his lady friend) to cook up a nice pumpkin pie".

Dangerous Creatures | Chapter 13: Trapped Creature

Summary: Mackenzie Alemaund is an unlucky 18 year old teenager whose life changes drastically after she gets kidnapped by two vampires and learns, in the same day, that she is not human.

Elijah was losing his mind. It was unlike him to be this reckless. He thought he had learnt his lesson. How many times had Klaus killed someone he cared about just to spite him? Too many times for him to make that mistake again. But Elijah had been too confident. He had been so focused on making a plan to kill his brother that he hadn’t imagined he’d fail. And now, Mackenzie was paying the price.

Elena was mad. She was mad at Damon for making her believe Bonnie was dead and she was mad at herself for putting Makenzie in danger. She wondered if Klaus could be trusted to keep his word.

“Do you think he told the truth?” she asked Elijah once they were back in the Salvatores’ living room. “Do you think he’ll give us Mackenzie back once he has the moon stone?”

“I don’t know,” he replied. “He won’t give her back until the sacrifice is done.”

“Can we go over the plan again?” Damon said, “Because I’m not letting Elena get sacrificed, I don’t care about your 500-year-old potion. It’s not happening.”

“It’s not your decision to make, Damon,” Elena reminded him. “It is happening. We cooperate so that Klaus doesn’t kill any of you. Bonnie and Elijah will kill him during the ritual. That’s the plan and I don’t care if you don’t like it.”

“What about John’s ring?”

“Ms. Gilbert is a doppelganger, she’s not human. Chances are the ring won’t work.”

“Well, I’ll take those odds over your magical witch potion with no expiration date.”

“What about Mackenzie?” Elena asked, ignoring him. “If we fail to kill Klaus… he’ll kill her.”

“Likely,” Elijah nodded. “Which is why we won’t fail.”

Mackenzie woke up in an unfamiliar room. She was alone but the bedroom door was open, and she could hear people talking. One of them sounded like Elena but didn’t feel like Elena at all. She was a vampire, Mackenzie knew it. There were two other people with her. One of them was very powerful.

She sat up slowly, feeling dizzy, and gasped when she saw the blood on her dress. That’s when she remembered. It was her blood. She’d been taken by Klaus. Fear seized her.

“Well, well, well,” Alaric said as he entered the bedroom. “Look who’s awake.”

“Klaus,” she breathed out.

“Indeed,” he smiled but there was nothing friendly about his demeanor. “Mackenzie, is it? I have to say,” he chuckled, “I was surprised to see you with my brother. I wonder what he sees in you.”

Mackenzie ignored the insult. It was the least of her problems.

“Although, he always had a soft spot for witches.”

Mackenzie felt like she was back in that dirty house with Elena, Rose and Trevor. Except this time, she wasn’t afraid of Elijah. This time, she hoped he’d come save her.

“What do you want?” she asked in a whisper. She couldn’t talk any louder.

“To break the curse,” he shrugged. “Oh, you mean, from you? Nothing. You are going to help me get the final ingredient to help me break it. I told my brother I’d exchange you against the moon stone. Tell me, do you think he’ll do it?”

She frowned. Did she think he’ll do it? She hoped he would. But she also knew how badly Elijah wanted Klaus dead. And if he gave him the stone, it meant he would be able to do the sacrifice, which meant Elena would die. Unless Elijah gave her the potion he mentioned. Would he? Would he risk it all for her? She wished she knew.

“I don’t know,” she whispered so low Klaus almost didn’t hear her in this human body.

“Well, I do know my brother. And I know he will. He’s probably beating himself up right now for putting you in danger. That is, if he cares, of course.”

Mackenzie frowned. Klaus seemed to enjoy this mental game. She tried not to let it get to her but failed.

“You know what I find interesting? My friend Maddox here, he’s a very powerful witch you see, and he tells me he’s never met someone as powerful as you,” he finished as he took a step forward, making Mackenzie move back instinctively, but her back met with the wall. “Now how can you be so powerful and yet so weak?”

Now she had to be smart. Of course, she couldn’t tell him the truth, but even if she told him she was just a witch he’d kill her if he thought for even one second she was powerful enough to take him down the way Bonnie tried to.

“I only learnt recently I was a witch. I don’t know how to use magic.”

“Really?” he raised an eyebrow. “Did my brother tell you that?”

“I… I couldn’t be compelled. That’s how I learnt I wasn’t human.”

“Elijah tried to compel you?”

“No. A vampire. She’s dead now.”

“Dead, uh?”

“Killed by a werewolf.”

Klaus laughed. “This town sounds very exciting,” he said before turning around and gesturing her to follow him.

She hesitated, she didn’t want to go anywhere with him.

“You can either follow me or I can drag you, your choice,” he called from the other room.

She followed. In the living room of what she assumed was her history professor’s apartment, stood whom she guessed to be Katherine and Maddox. She could feel Maddox was indeed very powerful, though not as powerful as Bonnie was. She wondered what happened to her friends after she was taken from the dance.

“Meet Katerina, your babysitter.” The vampire rolled her eyes but said nothing. “And Maddox. Now, Maddox and I have some business to attend to. I understand you can’t practice magic, that is if you didn’t lie to me of course,” he winked at her, “but let me be clear. I made a promise to my big brother I wouldn’t harm you. But if you try anything, if when I come back you’re somewhere else other than in this apartment, I will find you and I will have to break that promise, do you understand?”

Mackenzie swallowed then nodded.

“Good! See you later then,” he said then they were gone.

A few seconds of silence passed during which Katherine listened to Klaus and his minion leave the building. When they were out, she took a breath then sat down on the couch.

“So you’re dating Elijah, uh?” she asked while inspecting her nails.

Mackenzie had heard a lot about Katherine. About who she was and all the terrible things she did. But she would have never imagined that the first thing the vampire would say to her would be this.

“No,” she said, shifting from one foot to the other.

“Really?” she raised an eyebrow as she looked up at the girl, “Klaus said you were his weakness.”

“We’re friends.”

“Mmh,” she said as if she were thinking about it. “Well, Klaus is right, you know. Elijah’s not going to let you die.”

Mackenzie wished that were true. She wished she could believe it. Maybe she felt bad she had ruined her friend’s chance at avenging his siblings.

“You’re not a witch.”

Mackenzie felt like time had stopped, like her heart had stopped beating. Katherine hadn’t said that like she was asking a question. She said it like she knew.

“I…”

“It was smart, lying to him,” the vampire continued, “though a terrible decision, really. When he hears your last name, he’ll know exactly what you are.”

“I… I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

As soon as she said that, Katherine was on her feet, right in front of the elemental.

“Don’t treat me like I’m an idiot,” she said, her face inches from hers. “Alemaund? Elijah should’ve told you Klaus wouldn’t be fooled. Anyone who’s as old as he is knows what an Alemaund is.”

Mackenzie swallowed. “How do you know?” she asked with a trembling voice.

Katherine shrugged then backed away. “I’ve met elementals before. Helped a mermaid once in Germany.”

Germany? The Holy Forest? Mackenzie wanted to ask but was too afraid to. What if she asked how she knew about it? She couldn’t risk it.

“A… mermaid?” she faked ignorance.

“Yeah, an elemental of water. She wasn’t half fish or anything but, that’s what she called herself.”

“Did you… did you tell the others?”

“You mean Damon and Stefan? No. They don’t even know what an elemental is. Besides, it is smart to lie. Your kind has a lot of enemies and very few friends.”

“I’ve been told my kind was extinct.”

“Yeah, half true.”

“Do you… do you know other elementals… that are still alive I mean?”

Katherine looked up and grinned. “Maybe.”

Mackenzie hesitated but sat near the vampire anyway. “Tell me. Tell me about elementals.”

“Urgh,” she rolled her eyes, “you’re lucky I’m bored. What do you wanna know?”

“I… How… How many have you met?”

Katherine thought about it before she answered. “18.”

“18?” Mackenzie sounded surprised. “I thought elementals were all dead.”

“Not really. Your kind is hiding and has gotten very good at it through the centuries. Most of them are in Europe, mostly Germany.”

“What’s in Germany?”

Katherine sighed like she hesitated to answer but then realized she didn’t care.

“There’s a community there, hidden. It’s called the Holy Forest,” she scoffed, “what a ridiculous name. It’s safe for any creature. Killing in the Forest is strictly forbidden. If you kill someone, you kill yourself. Of course that sounded like paradise for your kind.”

“Does… does it still exist?”

“Oh sure. Powerful witches live there ‘cause they don’t have to worry about their safety. They’re so powerful they made themselves immortal. They lead it.”

“They lead the community?”

“Yeah, there’s a queen there. Margo. She’s the bastard child of a Spanish King. She felt like she deserved a crown so she made herself a kingdom. Smart girl that witch.”

“Do you know her?”

“She doesn’t like me very much,” Katherine grinned. “But I’ve met her.”

“How… What were you doing in the Forest?”

“Hiding from Klaus,” she said as she pushed herself away from the couch. Mackenzie followed her with her eyes as she walked towards the kitchen and took out a bottle of brown alcohol.

“Why did you leave?”

“’cause it’s boring. It’s like a small country, or a really big city, but it’s a secret so you imagine how it is.”

“Boring,” Mackenzie nodded.

“Exactly. It’s a hassle to get inside so I never went back.”

“Are your elemental friends still there?”

“My elemental friends are dead.”

“Oh…”

“Yeah, old age. You don’t really die from anything else over there, which is the only plus side really.”

“Your friends… they were all mermaids?”

“No. They were from every family. One of them, an Alemaund, was even an ultimate.”

Mackenzie started to sweat. “An ultimate?”

“Mmh. An elemental who can control every element and more. Even practice witchcraft,” Katherine brought the bottle to her mouth before she sat back down. “What about you? What element can you control?”

“Uh… I,” she shook her head.

“Let me guess, you don’t know.”

“I told Klaus the truth. I don’t really know how to use my powers.”

“You don’t ‘really’ know? So you know a little?”

“I…” she shrugged, “a little.”

“Like what?”

“Uh… fire. And nature.”

“Mmh, interesting. You might be an ultimate yourself. After all Maddox did think you were a witch. Maybe it’s because you can practice witchcraft.”

“That would be bad, right?”

“How so?” Katherine raised an eyebrow.

“If I’m an ultimate. Klaus will kill me.”

“Maybe. Probably.”

“We thought you’d be dead,” she changed the subject, “Damon and Stefan told Elijah they thought Klaus had killed you.”

“No. Klaus won’t kill me. Not now anyway. He’s enjoying torturing me. You want my advice? If you manage to get out of here, run. Run and don’t come back.”

“Sounds like good advice.”

“How do you think I survived all these years?”

Seeing Klaus, the real Klaus, walk out of that life size box was one of the most terrifying thing Mackenzie had ever witnessed. Mostly because Greta Martin and Maddox had made it look so easy. Mackenzie hadn’t said a word since Klaus had come back. The original vampire, to her relief, had more important issues to deal with than engage in conversation with her.

Seeing Greta broke her heart. She didn’t dare speak to her, but she remembered how determined her father and brother were to get her back. She wondered how they would have felt if they had known she was working with Klaus because she wanted to.

Katherine kept talking about the Forest. She really liked hearing herself talk. But she didn’t tell Mackenzie anything she didn’t already know. She went on and on about ultimates and how they came to exist, how elementals had been chased down through the centuries by vampires and witches, mostly witches. The only interesting information Mackenzie wanted to hear more about was the Holy Forest. Unfortunately, it seemed that Katherine was done talking about it.

“Good news, Mackie Mack!” Klaus said in the late afternoon of the day of the full moon. “Elijah agreed to the exchange! Of course, that’s just the first part of the deal. I’ll only release you after. Once I’m back, and alive, and curse free,” he grinned before he left to get Elena, and the moon stone.

Mackenzie swallowed. She knew if Klaus died, she’d be free, if he didn’t, she would die. Because there was no way Elijah wasn’t going to try to kill his brother. She just knew it.

When Klaus came back an hour later, he was alone, and mad. “Where’s Maddox? He should be back by now.”

“I don’t know,” Katherine mumbled.

Klaus sat at the desk and opened his laptop. He seemed to be watching a video.

“What are you doing?” the vampire asked but received no answer. “Where’s Elena?” she sighed out of annoyance.

“With Greta.”

Screams of pain came out of the laptop and Mackenzie shivered when she understood it was live footage.

“It’s almost time,” Klaus said with a smile.

Mackenzie was too afraid to ask. She wouldn’t have had the time anyway as the front door opened suddenly. Mackenzie, for a reason she didn’t know, moved towards Katherine, as if she’d be safer by the vampire’s side.

“I wasn’t aware you’ve been invited in,” Klaus said which made Mackenzie frown.

She hadn’t seen anyone enter but as she turned around and followed Klaus’ gaze, she saw Damon standing in front of the Original.

“I came here to tell you that you have to postpone the ritual.”

“Didn’t we already have this conversation?”

“Yeah but that was before I rescued your werewolf and vampire.”

Mackenzie looked up at Katherine who said nothing. What werewolf and vampire? And why did it matter?

“And killed your witch,” Damon finished.

“Excuse me?” Klaus said with a threatening tone as he got up and took angry steps towards the vampire.

“And you can kill me for it,” Damon continued, “I don’t care. It was all me.”

“Girls, give us a moment,” Klaus said, not removing his eyes from Damon.

Katherine took Mackenzie to the bedroom and closed the door.

“Trust me. You don’t want to see this.”

Katherine opened the bedroom door after she heard Klaus call her. Of course, Mackenzie hadn’t heard anything. Damon was lying on the floor, unconscious but alive.

“I need you to do me a favor,” he told Katherine as he handed her a cellphone which Mackenzie recognized to be Elena’s.

“What?”

“Call sweet aunt Jenna for me, will you? Tell her to come over here.”

“What? Why?” Mackenzie couldn’t stop herself from asking.

“Well, unfortunately Damon has let my vampire escape, so I’m going to need a new one.”

“What? But… she’s not a vampire.”

“You’re right. She’s not a vampire. Yet,” he grinned a terrifying smile.

Mackenzie’s eyes grew big as she understood, and her heart started to beat harder in her chest.

“You can’t do this!”

Klaus laughed. “Of course I can. And I will.”

Mackenzie looked up at Katherine who shook her head no. Of course she knew there was nothing she could do and any attempt to stop him would result in her death but she had to do something. She couldn’t just let Jenna die.

“Can’t you use somebody else?”

Klaus turned around and raised an eyebrow. “And who would you suggest I kill instead of Elena’s aunt? Do you have anyone in mind? Someone at school you don’t like, perhaps?”

“I… I…”

“I’ll tell you what,” he said as he approached her and it took everything she had in her not to step back, “if you can name someone, anyone you’d like me to kill instead, I will,” he gave her a smile that made her want to puke. “Well? Anyone?”

“Klaus, she’s not gonna name anyone,” Katherine stopped him.

“I know she won’t,” he said as he took the elemental’s face in his hand. “She’s no killer.”

Right after Klaus exited the building to go meet Jenna, Katherine took a blood bag from the fridge and started feeding it to Damon who was still lying on the floor with a broken neck. The first thing he asked was why Mackenzie was “wailing”.

“He should’ve used me,” Damon growled as he got on his feet with some difficulty. “Why didn’t he use me?”

“He couldn’t. He said you were as good as dead.”

“What does that even mean?”

“What does it mean?” she repeated with anger in her voice. She took his arm and brought his sleeve up revealing a nasty wound.

“What is this Damon?”

“That’s…” he sighed. “That’s a werewolf bite.”

“That’s… that’s gonna kill you,” Mackenzie said.

“Yeah, tell me something I don’t know!” he snapped.

“Damon, focus!” Katherine waved a hand in front of his face, “Tell us. What’s the plan?”

“The plan?”

“Yeah, the plan! The plan to kill Klaus.”

“What so you can call him and tell him all about it?”

“Are you kidding me? I want Klaus dead! What makes you think I want him to come back and kill me after he’s done torturing me?”

Damon sighed and rolled his eyes. “We let him do the sacrifice and we kill him when he turns after the ritual. When he’s most vulnerable.”

“We?”

“Bonnie and Elijah.”

“Wha- I thought Bonnie could kill Klaus on her own,” Mackenzie asked.

“Channeling that much power will kill her. We faked her death, Klaus thinks she’s dead. He knows Elijah’s around but he thinks he won’t intervene because of you,” he said pointing a finger at the her. “You better pray this works, because if it doesn’t, you’re both as dead as me.”

That was the longest night of Mackenzie’s life. She hadn’t slept at all and Klaus still hadn’t come back at sunrise. But something told them Klaus was still alive. And that thing was trashing Alaric’s living room.

“He’s still alive!” she shouted as she threw a chair against the wall. “I’m still compelled!”

Mackenzie couldn’t move as she watched Katherine destroy all of her professor’s furniture. She was petrified with fear. Klaus was still alive which meant she was dead. She didn’t know if Bonnie and Elijah had survived, she didn’t know if Elena had taken the potion, and she probably never will.

As the day passed Mackenzie went through different phases. She panicked silently in the morning, had needed Katherine to calm her down at noon, and cried tears of grief for both her friends and herself in the afternoon. When the sun went away however, she started to ask questions.

“Didn’t he say he’d be back today? Where is he?”

“How should I know?” Katherine replied, though she did find it weird too.

Mackenzie eventually fell asleep, exhausted from her previous sleepless night. She woke up early in the morning, and still no sign of Klaus.

“Klaus hasn’t come back but Damon and Stefan haven’t either,” Katherine eventually said on the second afternoon.

“Maybe they’re dead,” Mackenzie said with no emotion in her voice.

“Or they’re afraid of Klaus and they’re staying away.”

“Either way we have no idea what happened.”

“Can I ask you something?”

Mackenzie looked up at the vampire, suddenly curious. “Sure.”

“If nobody comes for us and you’re about to die from starvation, do you mind if I drink your blood? I’m almost out of blood bags.”

Mackenzie stared at Elena’s doppelganger in silence for a minute before she started laughing.

“I’m being serious,” Katherine insisted though the grin on her face contradicted that statement.

“You wanna eat me?”

“You smell very good. In fact, you’re starting to smell extremely good. I was wondering how you managed to cover your scent.”

“Elijah,” she replied, wiping a few tears off her cheeks, “his blood helps.”

“Vampire blood hides your scent?” she asked and the elemental nodded. “Interesting.”

“Well, if Klaus comes back he’ll smell the lie on me. Not that it matters, he’ll kill me anyway,” she said, resigned to her fate.

“Mmh, let’s not take any chances,” the vampire said as she bit her wrist.

“What are you doing?”

“Drink.”

Mackenzie raised her eyebrows.

“Drink before it heals.”

Mackenzie hesitated but drank anyway.

“Thank you…”

“Don’t mention it,” the vampire sighed as she leaned back into the couch.

Katherine started talking and never stopped. She talked about her human life, how she became a vampire, what she did to survive. How she would do it all over again. At some point in the night she realized Mackenzie had fallen asleep next to her. She’d have been offended if she weren’t so worried.

On the third afternoon, as they were playing cards in the kitchen, the front door opened. Mackenzie’s heart stopped as she heard someone enter the apartment. The look on Katherine’s face didn’t reassure her at all. But when they turned around all they felt was relief.

“Two days we’ve been waiting!” Katherine told Stefan as he closed the door. “What happened?”

“We ran into complications.”

“Complications?” Katherine repeated.

“Doesn’t really matter, I need to find him, any idea where he is?”

“We’ve been trapped in here for two days,” Mackenzie told Stefan. “Why hasn’t anyone come before now?”

“Well, why didn’t you leave?” Stefan frowned, “Katherine’s not really compelled to keep you in here, I thought you’d have gone by now.”

“Wait… you’re not?!”

“Um, yeah maybe should’ve mentioned that.”

“You think?!”

“Sorry,” Katherine shrugged. “I enjoy your company.”

Mackenzie almost choked. It had been a while since she’d felt some sort of anger. She also felt really stupid for thinking Katherine Pierce would have been honest with her.

“Don’t you remember what he said? If you leave he’ll come after you and kill you. And… he’ll know I’m on vervain and he’ll kill me…” she said as if she weren’t remorseful at all. And she wasn’t, Mackenzie had listened to her long enough to know Katherine Pierce didn’t do remorse.

“I…” Mackenzie shook her head, she was speechless. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. “How’s Elijah?” she finally asked.

“He betrayed us. He was about to kill Klaus when he saved him.”

“What? Why?” She couldn’t believe it. All Elijah had talked about in the past month was the plan to kill his brother. She had seen his determination, his pain, his anger. What could have possibly changed his mind?

“Klaus told him his siblings were safe and that he’d take him to them,” Stefan explained, and she gasped. That would explain it.

“Is… is it true?”

“Don’t know, don’t care.”

“Wait,” Katherine cut them off, “why are you here? Do you have a death wish or something?”

“I just need to know where he is, do you…”

But before he could finish his sentence, the door opened again. They all backed away to see Klaus come in, and he wasn’t alone.

“Elijah,” Mackenzie breathed out as she went to hug him. He hugged her back, happy to see her safe and unharmed. Klaus raised an eyebrow and grinned a mocking smile.

“Are you okay?” he asked as he took a look at her. She was still wearing that bloody dress from the dance.

“She’s fine, brother. I told her I wouldn’t harm your little witch.

“Klaus,” Katherine said, seizing Stefan by his jacket, “look who decided to come for a visit.”

“Well you just keep popping up, don’t you?” Klaus smiled, amused.

“I need your help,” Stefan said, “for my brother.”

“Well, whatever it is it’s gonna have to wait. You see, I have an obligation to my brother that requires my immediate attention,” Klaus said as he walked away towards the kitchen.

Stefan’s eyes moved from Mackenzie to Elijah to whom he gave a dark look.

“You understand how important family is or you wouldn’t be here,” the Original told the youngest Salvatore. He looked down at Mackenzie and explained: “My brother gave me his word that he would reunite me with my own.”

“And so I shall.”

Mackenzie jumped as she heard Klaus speak from behind her. Elijah turned around to face his brother who pushed a dagger in his heart.

“No!” Mackenzie screamed, “stop it!”

“Don’t,” were Elijah’s last word, though they weren’t for his brother.

“No,” she cried as he fell on the floor, “why did you do that?!” she asked as she kneeled near her friend’s dead body.

“Don’t remove the dagger now, or I’ll have to use it on you before I put it back, do you understand?”

Mackenzie didn’t reply. “Why did you do that?” she cried, cupping Elijah’s cheeks with shaking hands.

Klaus ignored her. He seized Stefan by his shirt and pushed him against a wall. “Now… what am I gonna do with you?”

Mackenzie stayed by Elijah’s body while Klaus repeatedly pushed a knife in Stefan’s abdomen. Mackenzie could only hear Stefan’s cries of pain and Elijah’s silence.

“He’s just trying to help his brother,” Katherine eventually said.

“The witches said you had a cure. Make me a deal. Just give me the cure and I’ll do whatever you want.”

“Trouble is,” Klaus said as he removed the knife from Stefan’s stomach. The vampire fell to the floor. “I don’t know if you’d be any good to me the way you are now,” he continued as he poured blood into a glass. “I heard about this one vampire, always on and off the wagon for decades. When he was off, he was magnificent. A true ripper. Sound familiar?” he asked with an evil grin as he brought the glass of blood to his lips.

“I haven’t been that way in a very long time.”

“Well that’s a vampire I can made a deal with. That is the kind of talent that I can use when I leave this town.”

A psychopath. Mackenzie thought. A monster of nightmares.

“Katerina,” he called quietly, “come here.”

Katherine hesitated, of course, though she didn’t have much choice. She gave him her hand as he requested it. Then, he bit her. Mackenzie jumped as she heard Katherine’s cries of pain.

“No,” the vampire breathed out, “no, no, no,” she kept repeating as she stared at the werewolf bite on her wrist. But Klaus quickly forcefully fed her his blood.

“You want your cure?” Klaus asked Stefan. “There it is.”

“Your blood is the cure.”

“Gotta love mother nature” Klaus grinned. “Now. Let’s talk.”

For the next hour, Klaus forced Stefan to drink from the blood bags in the fridge. “You do everything I say and I save your brother, that’s the deal,” he had said. So, Stefan did everything he said while Katherine and Mackenzie watched, powerless. “Leave town with me and save your brother’s life,” was Klaus’ deal. When Stefan accepted, he gave a vial of blood to Katherine and compelled her to deliver it to Damon.

“No,” Stefan said.

“You want me to leave?” Katherine asked just to be sure.

“Yes. And take the witch with you, will you? I’m tired of listening to her cry.”

“No,” Stefan repeated but it was too late. They were gone. “She’ll never take it to him!”

Klaus shrugged. “Well I’m not the one who gave her vervain, am I?”

“Is that all?” Katherine asked as she closed the trunk of Elijah’s black SUV.

Mackenzie had found the keys in the kitchen. She had wrapped up her things and Elijah’s and had put everything in the car with Katherine’s help. She couldn’t leave anything behind as the owners would be back soon now that Elijah was dead.

“Yes. Thank you for your help.”

“No problem,” the vampire sighed. “You ready to go?”

Mackenzie couldn’t help but feel like she was making the worst decision she ever made. It felt like a suicide mission. And who was she kidding? It was. But what else was she supposed to do? She had nowhere to go. No one to go to. So when Katherine asked her if she wanted to go after Klaus with her, after Elijah, she couldn’t say no because she didn’t really have any other option.

“Yes. Let’s go.”

Jack woke up, to the door creaking open, Kaylee’s head popping through the gap. “Oh morning Jacky boy” Kaylee smiled, “Morning Kay” Jack croaked out.

“How’s my home girl doing?” Kaylee questioned eyes glancing at Kenzie who was still sleeping. “She’s still asleep at the moment, she pretty much knocked out as soon as I put her on the bed” Jack replied kissing Kenzie’s head.

“Got room for one more in there?” Kaylee asked, already walking into the room, if Jack spent the night at Kenzie and Kaylee’s apartment he’d usually wake up the next morning with Kenzie cuddling into him and Kaylee spooning Kenzie from behind. “For you? As Mackenzie pulled down her shorts and panties, Jack reached into his side of the closet pulling out some light blue swim shorts, Mackenzie’s favourite pair. Once Mackenzie was dressed, Jack got himself dressed before grabbing her hand and leading her downstairs where Kaylee had already packed a bag for them. Mackenzie grabbed his hand as Jack wrapped his other around her waist, helping her steady herself on the boat.

Mackenzie kissed Jack’s cheek as a thank you as she scanned the boat doing a headcount, but she noticed that Luca and Skylar were missing, although Kenzie and Skylar weren’t talking after last night she was still responsible for looking after Skylar over the summer.

Shrugging, Mackenzie went and sat next to Kaylee, “well hello there gorgeous, you come here often?” Kaylee winked. Mackenzie laughed, “no but with these views I might have to” she shot back, Jack smiled and rolled his eyes at the pair from afar.

Quinn soon made his way down the dock joined by Luca, Skylar was nowhere to be seen and it was quite obvious to Mackenzie no one seemed to be too bothered. Kaylee could sense Mackenzie’s slight confusion, “we all spoke at breakfast this morning whilst you and Jack were upstairs, and we all agreed minus Quinn that her behaviour last night was wrong, so wrong. None of us are talking to her, Quinn offered for her to come along but she obviously didn’t want to.”

Mackenzie sighed, “so absolutely no one is talking to her? Maybe I should check on her?” Kaylee lifted an eyebrow “absolutely not, kenz babe I love you and I love Skylar but what she said last night was not ok!! She called you a whore amongst other things, she insulted Jack, she insulted your relationship, your mom, she fucking slapped you!! She’s lucky Trev was there, I was ready to give her a taste of her own medicine.”

“It’s true, she was ready to throw hands. I had to get Luca to keep an eye on Skylar. He didn’t exactly want to but we couldn’t leave her on her own. Plus this one was about ready to kill her” Trevor butted into the conversation nodding his head at Kaylee.

Mackenzie sighed again, she didn’t really know what to say. What could she say? “Kenz you don’t have to talk to us about it, but we’re here if you need a listening ear” Trevor patted her shoulder before standing to join the boys by the wheel.

Kaylee looked at Kenzie expectantly, “let me inside that pretty head of yours kenz” Kaylee pulled an arm around her chest, so Mackenzie’s back was leaning against her. “I just don’t really know what to say Kay, it came out of nowhere and whilst it’s not exactly pleasant to be called a slut by your own sister I can handle it but what she said about Jack? Ugh I can’t and won’t stand for that” Mackenzie vented.

Kaylee nodded glancing over at Jack, who was looking out over the water with his brows furrowed lost in thought. “I just, I can’t lose him over this Kay, I love him so much. I’m not a gold digging puck bunny, but what if that’s what he thinks? What if Skylar saying that has made him realise that he could have anyone he wants? What if he’s realised that I’m not the one he wants anymore?” Mackenzie choked out trying not to cry.

Kaylee frowned, “kenz—“ “no Kaylee, I see all the girls that comment on his posts, I see all the tik toks, the endless tagging him in hot bikini pics, what if he’s finally realised that all I am is a girl from a broken family, a girl whose own sister calls her a whore, he can do so much better than me! So why settle for someone like me when he can have a girl who will give him the world?” Kenzie cried out tears falling freely down her cheeks.

Kaylee was stunned, sure she’d seen Mackenzie sad and upset even devastated but her best friend, the girl who was the epitome of little miss sunshine was never talking herself down. Mackenzie shot her head back at Kaylee, gritting her teeth and screwing her eyes shut as her ribs began throbbing. “N—no!! I love him so fucking much!! He’s it for me, there’s no one else I could even think about marrying but what if he breaks up with me? Maybe I should go home?” Mackenzie gritted out through the pain.

“HOME? GO HOME?” Kaylee shouted out, which gained the attention of Quinn who was sitting near the girls. He had overheard the conversation and sat in disbelief at what Mackenzie was saying. The other boys had begun wakesurfing, so were oblivious to what was happening. At that moment Quinn knew he needed to speak to Jack, but as he stood to approach his brother, Jack was already standing up and jumping into the water.

“Kenzie you can’t go home, you can’t run away from this. Jack loves you, anybody can see how much that boy adores you. Please don’t go, Jack—” Kaylee pleaded but it was cut short as Mackenzie’s eyes were starting to droop and roll back, her leg jolting. Kaylee patted her cheek, as Mackenzie slumped back into Kaylee tilting her head back. “Mackenzie? Kenz babes can you hear me?” Kaylee held her head up and could see a faint nod before Mackenzie started convulsing. “FUCK HELP!! KENZIE’S HAVING ANOTHER SEIZURE!” Kaylee exclaimed as she tried to move Mackenzie off her, with help from Luca they lowered her to the floor, Kaylee knelt to the left side of her using a stack of towels as a pillow for Kenzie’s head.

The other boys turned as they heard Kaylee shouting, Jack flying off the wakeboard as Luke cut the motor. Jack resurfaced “LUKEY WHAT THE HELL?!” He exclaimed, “JACK JACK” Quinn yelled, “WHAT?” Jack asked as he began swimming back to the boat.

“KENZIE, KENZIE’S HAVING A SEIZURE” Luke yelled, helping Jack back onto the boat. Jacks face dropped, “MOVE, FUCKING MOVE” he pushed Ethan and Mackie out of the way, dropping down to a kneel next to her, Mark and Trevor moving coolers out of the way, Luca already timing as instructed by Kaylee.

“How long has she been out?” Jack asked looking up at Kaylee, “just started, she just slumped back into me” Kaylee explained. “What triggered it?” Jack furrowed his brows, she was perfectly fine. Kaylee just shook her head, “Kaylee what triggered it?” Jack demanded.

Kaylee sighed “you”, “me?” Jack asked, shocked. “Let’s focus right now, I’ll explain later” Kaylee replied. “Luca time check?” Jack asked, “erm… 3 minutes” Luca replied.

Mackenzie was whining, “shhh shhh it’s ok baby, I’m here, Jacks here. You’re gonna be okay Angel I promise” Jack reassured her.

At the four minute mark Mackenzie stopped convulsing, her eyes were still closed and her chest was heaving. Jack reached for his sweatshirt that laid on the bench draping it over her eyes to block the harsh sun. Jack sat behind Mackenzie leaning her up to rest against his legs, he played with her hair, mumbling words of reassurance to her. Eventually Mackenzie came around “J-Jack?”

Jack looked down at her sweatshirt covered head, “I’m here baby” he reassured, grabbing her hand. “What— what happened? Where are we?” Mackenzie asked confusedly, “we’re on the boat remember angel? You had a seizure but you’re ok. You’re gonna be alright baby” Jack promised.

“Mmm, I’m tired Jacky” Mackenzie mumbled, “I know baby” Jack cooed. “You want me to keep the sweatshirt over you?” He asked, sometimes she could feel a little claustrophobic, “mmm I want cuddles, I love you Jacky” Kenzie mumbled, tiredness clear in her voice.

Jack turned to Luke who was still behind the wheel, “can you take us back to the house?” He asked his younger brother, Luke nodded, starting up the motor, and driving back to the house.

“Yeah? I love you kenz” Jack leaned down to kiss her head through the sweatshirt, he noticed her breathing evening out a sign she had fallen asleep. Kaylee grabbed the bag she packed for the couple, before standing, “I’ll come back with you, I’m starting to burn a little anyways” she stated as Quinn nodded “yeah I’ll come back too, I’m getting a little bored out here.”

It wasn’t long before they arrived at the dock, Quinn climbed off first reaching a hand out to help Kaylee back across. Jack slowly picked Kenzie up walking to the edge of the boat and passing her to Quinn briefly as he jumped back himself. Quinn returned Kenzie to Jack as they headed up to the house.

Quinn called out a hello just so they didn’t scare Skylar, Jack heading upstairs to lay Kenzie on their bed, he debated whether he should get her changed and decided that she’d be comfortable enough as she was. Laying a blanket across her, he leant down kissed her forehead before heading downstairs to grab them both a bottle of water.

As Jack made it to the kitchen he could hear voices in the living room. “Quinn, someone needs to say something” Jack deciphered that voice as Kaylee’s.

“You can’t drop all of that on him right now, that isn’t fair. He’s already losing his mind about the shit that went down yesterday” Quinn mumbled.

“He deserves to know Quinn, I’d rather he knows now” Kaylee shot back.

“His girlfriend just had a seizure, he’s my brother I know him better than anyone, and when I say now isn’t the time I mean it. Jack can’t process all of this without being irrational, he’ll fly off the impulsive radar ” Quinn says.

Jack decides that now is the best time to make his presence known “know what?” He asks as he steps into the room, Quinn sighs, shaking his head at Kaylee. “Fine tell him, but don’t say I didn’t warn you” Quinn adds.

“Jack. The reason why Kenzie was triggered is because she thinks you don’t want her anymore. She thinks that what sky said last night has somehow smacked you with the idea that you deserve better. Someone that will give you the world. Someone not from a broken family, she thinks that you think of her as a whore gold digging puck bunny. That you want to find someone better, and she’s thinking of going home” Kaylee frowned.

Jack stood frozen, Mackenzie thinks he doesn’t want her? That he wants someone better? There is no one better for him, she’s it, she’s the one. “Jack?” Quinn questioned looking at his brother in concern.

“W-what? I love her, I love her so much. There is no one else I want, she’s not a whore or a gold digger. She lost her virginity to me! Why would I think she’s a whore?” Jack was spiralling, and Quinn knew it. He’d only seen Jack do it a handful of times, the most recent one being Lukes draft day.

“Jack, rowdy breath for a sec buddy” Quinn approached his younger brother, Jack took a shaky breath, “she’s gonna break up with me? She can’t, I can’t lose her, I love her. She can’t throw this away!” Jack spoke shakily.

Kaylee looked between the two brothers, unsure of what to do. “She’s not gonna leave you Jack. She loves you, anyone can see how much she loves you. She’s just hurting right now buddy, emotions are running high” Quinn soothed.

Jack sighed, shaking his head but before he could speak another person made their presence known. “Kenzie’s gonna leave you?” Skylar looked confused and shocked.

“No thanks to you” Kaylee mumbled, before turning her back on Skylar. Skylar sighed out “Kay—.”

“Don’t, fucking don’t” Kaylee shook her head clenching her fists.

Skylar sighed, scanning the room, Quinn gave her a faint smile. “Jack?” Skylar called out to the middle Hughes boy, “if you’re gonna insult my girlfriend, our relationship or myself forget it” Jack gritted out.

“What the fuck were you thinking? Did you even think at all before you tore my best fucking friend apart? To the point she’s questioning whether she’s good enough for him?” Kaylee seethed.

Skylar opened and closed her mouth, “I-I-i” she stuttered out. “You fucking what? You’re sorry? Hmm because saying sorry isn’t gonna fix this!” Kaylee shouted.

Quinn looked back at Jack, noticing Jack’s chest heaving, “Jack?” Quinn placed his hands on Jack’s shoulders Jack however wasn’t paying attention, his eyes focusing on Skylar and Kaylee. “Rowdy?” Quinn shook his shoulders, Jack blinked before looking at Quinn, “hey buddy” Quinn smiled.

“Jack?” Kaylee looked over at him as she spoke, Jack looked at her. “She’s not gonna leave you, I’ll make sure of it, because it’ll be the dumbest thing she’ll ever do. She loves you, she loves you to pieces. She’s just scared, scared to lose you. A certain someone’s words have gotten to her and now she thinks that’s how you perceive her” Kaylee explained.

“Jack, I'm sorry, I’m so sorry” Skylar spoke, Jack just shook his head. “Why?” is all he said. Skylar frowned, “I don’t know” she whispered.

“You clearly fucking do, people don’t say shit like that for no reason, like why do you think it’s acceptable to call her a slut? Say all you want about me, I really don’t care but you keep my girlfriend's name out of your mouth if you’re just gonna speak negatively about her” Jack seethed, Quinn pulling him to one side to calm him down.

“She’s been nothing but a role model to you, the amount of times she’s skipped meals because your mom couldn’t afford to pay for a full week of groceries and she never complained. She never once complained when her stomach growled because she was so hungry, because her main priority was YOU! Making sure YOU were fed, YOU were happy, YOU were thriving. She’s the most selfless person I know, and you hurt her? Why?! Jack’s right, this isn’t something that comes out of nowhere!” Kaylee ranted, catching Quinn and Jacks attention, Jack seeming to have calmed down a little.

“Because she’s gonna leave me like dad did!!” Skylar cried out, Jack's eyes softened at that. “She’s not gonna leave you Sky, she loves you to death! You will always be top priority to her. You AND Jack, she loves you both so much!! She told me when her and Jack first started dating that if you and he didn’t get along then or if you didn’t like him she’d dump him because she loves you, she values your opinion. Who cheers the loudest at your games?” Kaylee looked at Skylar.

“You and Mackenzie” Skylar answered, “exactly, and who drove around half of Nashville to find you your very specific birthday cake for your 15th birthday party after the bakery messed it up?” Kaylee questioned again.

Skylar sighed, “Mackenzie.” “Right, and who has been there for you day in, day out, no matter where or what time it is? Who would drop everything at the tip of a hat if you needed them? Who brought you enough ice cream to never want more, watched legally blonde and cried with you when your first boyfriend broke up with you? Who snuck you out to parties even though your mom said no? Who cut her date with Jack short because you had a bad practice and needed a phone call?” Kaylee questioned stepping closer to Skylar.

“Mackenzie” Skylar sighed, tears falling down her cheeks, “exactly, she’s never gonna leave you. You’re gonna be sick of her if anything, but doesn’t she deserve to be happy? Doesn’t she deserve to have someone love her no matter what? She deserves so much, after everything she’s done for both of us. After everything that girl does and will do for us, I’m more than happy to share her. There’s plenty of her tiny ass to go around, Jacks not gonna hurt her, has he ever given you any doubt that he’ll leave her? Or she’ll leave you? No. You two are my sisters, not biologically but you might as well be” Kaylee ranted, bringing Skylar in for a hug.

“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry Jack. I didn’t mean it, I didn’t mean any of it. You are good enough for her, You’re more than good enough, you’re perfect for her” Skylar cried. Jack took a breath, “Skylar I'm not gonna stand here and lie and say that what you said didn’t hurt, because it did. Your approval was important to Kenz, which made it important to me. I never wanted to make you feel like I was taking her away from you, and I get that being away from her isn’t easy, hell I know that. Nothing is worse than being away from her on a roadie, but you hurt her, what you said was wrong, incredibly wrong. You insulted our relationship, you insulted me in my own house” Jack breathed out, trying not to shout.

“I think what Jack is trying to say is that he needs time to process this all. You can’t say stuff like that, say sorry and expect it to all be fine again” Quinn spoke, Jack nodded as he stood back and walked away.

Jack walked into the kitchen to grab the water he intended on getting in the first place before heading up stairs. As he pushed the door open, Mackenzie was just starting to wake up. “Hey baby” Jack cooed, passing her a water as she slowly sat up. “Hey Jacky” Mackenzie mumbled before drinking half the water.

“How are you feeling now, angel?” Jack cooed out, moving to lay next to her, “better, I heard yelling” Kenzie mumbled, rolling over to lay her head on his chest. “It’s ok baby, we were just sorting something out” Jack reached a hand to stroke her hair however Kenzie caught it, slowly leading it down between her legs. Jack furrowed his brows, drawing in a shaky breath, “Kenz baby” he whispered.

“Mhm” Mackenzie hummed in response, “we can’t babe, you’re tired and worn out from earlier” Jack sighed. Mackenzie sighed, “I want you Jack.”

“Why don’t we cuddle for now hmm” Jack suggested, Mackenzie nodded, cuddling into him more as he played with her hair. “I love you kenz, so much” Jack mumbled as he kissed her head, “mmm I love you too Jacky” Mackenzie mumbled placing a kiss on his chest as she drifted off to sleep.
