After moments of silence of watching over Ezra and Sabine dueling, Kanan's comlink suddenly went off. He held it up and answered, "I read you Hera."
"It's been a couple of days," Hera's angelic alto came through the speaker. "I wanted to see how things are going."
Kanan sighed, it had only been two days and he already felt exhausted. "Slowly. Ezra's still taking her through the basic forms with the training sabers."
On the other end, Hera sat confused in the nose gun chair, what the heck did he mean by training sabers, and why was he using them?
"Training sabers? You mean those sticks you and Zeb made?" She replied, she felt a bit of frustration building up in her, but she made sure not to project it into her voice, she wanted to hear his reason.
"I'm being careful," is all Kanan said back.
Hera raised a brow, now intensely puzzled, "...Were you careful with Ezra? I don't remember him fighting with a stick."
On the other end Kanan gave a light huff, "Well, maybe I'm trying to do things differently this time."
Hera allowed herself to let a bit of frustration flow into her voice, "Or maybe because she doesn't have the force you don't believe she can do this."
Kanan replied almost immediately, he felt not only Hera's frustration but his own as well. "No, the force resides in all living things but you have to be open to it. Sabine is...blocked. Her mind is conflicted, she's so expressive yet so tightly wound, she's so..." He couldn't find the words.
"Mandalorian," Hera assisted.
Kanan tilted his head back and let out a groan. "Very."
Hera decided to leave the subject be for now, hopefully Kanan would come to the realization that she didn't need those sticks on his own instead of her needing to talk some sense into him. "I'll be sending out supplies, is there anything specific that you need?"
"Patience, understanding..." Kanan began to list. Hera could tell he was quite tired, but he had to be strong.
"Hmm..." Hera chuckled, "I'll see what I can do."
They ended their conversation with that and Hera went to get some caf, while back at the training camp Kanan sighed as we watched Ezra train Sabine.
Later Fenn Rau dropped by and gave Sabine Mandalorian cufflinks, she decided to use them to her advantage, but made the mistake of using them on Kanan. He immediately cut through the golden lasso of a laser she'd wrapped around him and scolded her, mentioning Jedi and Mandalorian history.
Fed up, Sabine stormed off to process her feelings and past in the nature of Atallon, leaving Kanan, Ezra, and Fenn at the camp.
Ezra went after her, but after talking with Sabine for a short while she sent him off on a sad note and immediately regretted it.
After Ezra left she kicked the nearest rock out of frustration and walked some more. Little did she know it was actually Bendu... "Why am I like this?" She asked herself out loud, knowing she was out of earshot of the camp.
"Why doesn't Kanan let me use the actual saber instead in some stupid stick!" "Why do I always end up hurting someone, someone I love, someone who didn"t deserve it?"
"Why did I let Ezra walk away?" She asked as she walked around. "I could have stopped him and apologized. Why do I let myself get so angry over little things? Now everyone at camp thinks I'm a brat, great."
"No one trusted me with that saber anyway, they made me take it and then they didn't even let me use the damn thing. Who cares, I'm just a lost cause anyway..." She concluded, sitting down on another rock. She was tired, stressed, and frustrated all at the same time, she hated when she felt.
Suddenly her comlink chimed, and yet she didn't want to pick up, she knew someone would scold her the next time they saw her if she didn't. "Yes?" She answered, though she was frustrated, she was brought up to be respectful no matter what she was feeling.
But when she heard the voice on the other end, she quickly apologized for the slight sarcasm. "Sabine?" Hera's voice asked, "You sound upset, is everything alright?"
"Nope," Sabine stated flatly.
Hera furrowed her brows on the other end, "Would you like to talk about it?"
Sabine sighed, she didn't usually talk to anyone about her feelings, but right now, she wanted to get at least some of it out. "Yeah, I do."
Hera was probably the only person Sabine trusted with her feelings, and even then she didn't tell her most of them, the last time she really vented to Hera was when they were stranded on the abandoned base with the fyrnocks, and even then that was years ago.
She had trust issues from the beginning and she knew it, but how was she supposed to trust anyone again after the nightmare of a life she lived before she met the crew?
No one ever blamed her for the issue though, they all knew where she was coming from and understood her position.
But as she talked to Hera, she realized that maybe she should start letting go a bit, start unraveling the tight cloth which trapped her within its grasp. It would take time, obviously, but it would be worth it, she hoped.
"And then Kanan won't let me use the actual saber, he just has me training with a freaking stick..." She continued.
Hera paused.
"He- he hasn't let you use the saber?" There was a tint of frustration in her voice which made Sabine a bit scared for Kanan.
"No."
"That's it." Hera stated, "Look, I'm going to be honest with you. You don't have the force, that's fine, you may not have wanted to do this in the first place, okay, but he not letting you use the damn thing is absolute bullshit."
Sabine was shocked, she was not expecting that as a reply.
"I love Kanan with all my heart, but sometimes he can be a bit of a pain in the neck, so here's what we're going to do. I'm going to call him and force him to let you use the saber, and when he does, I want you to kick his ass. Show him you're fully capable of doing this, and you don't need some stick to prove it."
Sabine was hesitant to reply, "What if you can't convince him?"
Sabine had to pull the com away from her for a bit from the loud laugh Hera let out. "Oh trust me, I have my ways, and if he doesn't comply he'll be sleeping on the couch."
Sabine chuckled, "If you say so. I'm not sure we should do this though, I'm still not feeling all that confident about the saber, if he beats me I'll let you down."
Hera sighed, "Sabine, you could never let me down. You don't have to completely destroy him, but I do want you to teach him a lesson. And winning at least one round with the saber would get the message through."
"...Okay, I'll do it," Sabine finally said.
"That's my girl," Hera replied, Sabine could tell she was smiling on the other end. "Now go, and try your best."
"I will," Sabine smiled, hanging up and running back to the camp. It was already nightfall, sure, but that would only make her victory look even cooler.
