I grew up very lonely, in a lot of ways, and there are a lot of memories of my childhood, precious memories, that I'm the only one who can keep it.

I always had a love for stories. They didn't had to be true, as long as they were entertaining. I remember taking old scientific books from my grandma's TV hack and reading it out loud, at 5 AM, to my imaginary college students. I remember treating it like it was their school work and telling them how proud I was of their intelligence.

I remember taking all of my dolls, my stuffed animals and making up a few bath towel dolls and sitting them in the garage, and teaching them everything I saw at school. Later, I did the same to my lil sibling and our cousin of the same age.

And I remember, most of all, living in between my books. They were there all of the time, or better yet, I was in them all of my time. I read romances, adventures, sci-fi, ya and terrors. I read scientific magazines and, sometimes, the Bible. I read entire encyclopedias about the ancient Egypt and how their pyramids were built.

But my all time favourite always were the small town settings. Nothing ever beat the whimsical loneliness of a small town, where the streets were quiet and a certain magic made the air still. I read World Of Sofia when I was 9, and I didn't get shit about the philosophy part, but I remember reading again and again the parts where she walked home from school, and where she walked through the trees lining her house.

I read Siren countless times, enchanted by the lake house, and the familiarity of that cold beach small town setting, where everyone knew each other. Twilight, and their eternal grey sky and damp sidewalks, and that scene where Bella takes a blanket to her backyard and falls asleep reading. The Secret Circle, where Cassie moves into this tiny neighborhood in this small island town, where there's literally 12 old, story-filled houses, and a secret keeps it united. The amount of time I spent daydreaming about Cassie being Nick's soulmate and them discovering it in a Halloween night, having a past life ghost scene, like the Once Upon a December dance??? If I counted it, it would make to days.

The Vampire Diaries show was nice and all, but nothing beats Fells Church and this small community, where Elena walks to school, and spends her time chilling in the graveyard. There's barely any cars in those scenes, and a lot of the story is told walking around this tiny town, in those old buildings. The people who lived there, who found the city, still have relevance to explain why things are like that. Everyone has an impact.

I read The Girl Who Chased the Moon more than I could ever count, and my copy shows it. The pages are yellow, the back cover fell a long time ago and there's coffee stains here and there. The last page is held to the book by tape. It lived in my backpack, and in the laundry basket, and in the kitchen, and under the couch, near the spot I liked to lay on the ground to sleep, and it got tossed around in my bed, where it was when I fell asleep reading it. A great part of my own stories started with the MC playing with some kind of bracelet or some old, lived in, loved bedroom. I can't even tell how many times I read the description of Sarah's old room, and how many times I pictured that old house, the messed yard, the hardwood floors and creaking stairs. The clean streets, the gazebo, Julia's house and her beloved kitchen.

Those elements, the streets, the smells in the air, the creaking floors and sidewalks, the graveyards and woods and the way those small towns are actually as much of characters as the main character living on them. The way Twilight wouldn't be the same without old charming Forks. The way everything about a well described, and actually used scenario makes a book a house of its own. Nothing beats it.

I can tell you those small towns are my childhood home way more than any house could ever be.

So, I got this book from the library in CD format about four months ago and, when I went to rip and listen to it, I found out the second disc was blank. Disappointed, I returned to the library, told them about the problem, and they told me I could ask for it again in a few months and they would have it fixed. However, when I picked it up from the library last week, I found that the second disc was STILL blank! I was really upset; I had been looking so forward to this book (I've been wayyy into mermaids lately) and just decided, "Oh well, I guess I'll use one of my Audible credits, it's too bad I can't support the library on this one." After listening to almost half of the book, I'm now convinced someone sabotaged the second disc of the library copy so nobody would have to suffer through this absolute CHORE of a book. I was, as I said, looking forward to this, was excited for some cutesy YA shiz and all I got was wooden characters, bland, non-descriptive prose, and ZERO. MERMAID. FUN. I am really really really disappointed with this one. I had hoped it would at least be so bad that it would become fun, but it was the worst kind of bad: it was boring.

Challenge “Sous l’Océan”

Depuis toujours, l’océan et ses créatures (qu’elles soient réelles ou imaginaires) me fascinent. Ce n’est pourtant que récemment que j’ai eu l’idée d’en faire un challenge qui pourra regrouper d’autres amoureux.ses de l’océan et de son univers, ou tout simplement des curieux.ses !

🦀 Le but :

Lire des livres en rapport avec la mer, l’océan, les aquariums, les créatures aquatiques mythiques ou bien réelles, et de s’amuser ! Les films peuvent également être pris en compte.

C’est un challenge qui dure un an d’abord, pour tester et voir s’il attire du monde. Pour le moment, une année me semble raisonnable car l’océan est un vaste monde et il en faut du temps pour l’explorer !

Durée du 1er janvier 2020 au 1er janvier 2021.

Le challenge se compose des trois catégories ci-dessous.

🐙 Les catégories :

Il existe trois catégories que vous pouvez sélectionner en fonction de ce qui vous attire le plus :

🐚 Expédition marine

Si vous êtes de nature aventureuse et que vous préférez partir en voyage en mer, si vous aimez les histoires de matins ou de pirates avec leurs chasses au trésor, et que vous préférez monter dans un bateau ou dans un sous-marin.

Si la mer ou l’océan vous attire, que les animaux marins vous enchantent, ou que vous aimez visiter les lacs ou aquariums, sans pour autant partir en expédition maritime ou partir à la recherches de créatures imaginaires…Sont inclus des histoires criminelles, histoires de famille ou histoires d’amour sous fond marin, des études sur l’océan et sa protection, des documentaires sur les animaux marins, etc.

Exemples de titres :

🐋 Comment ça se passe ?

Vous avez la possibilité de valider le challenge de trois façons différentes :

Nageur débutant Vous validez une catégorie complète (avec ses deux sous-menus), soit un total de deux livres (ou deux films) Comme un poisson dans l’eau Vous validez un sous-menu dans les trois catégories, ce qui fait un total de trois livres (ou de trois films)

Passionné.e de l’océan Vous validez deux catégories (4 livres), voire les trois (six livres/films)

🐬 En bonus :

Vous pouvez, si vous le désirez, partager avec l’ensemble des participants sur votre blog d’une musique ou d’une poésie liée à la mer ou l’océan ou bien parler d’une plage ou d’un aquarium que vous avez visité et adoré. Ce n’est pas obligatoire, ce n’est qu’un petit plus pour ceux et celles que ça pourrait intéresser !

🐠 Quelques informations à savoir :

→ Je prends en compte tout type de livre : romans, ebooks, bandes-dessinées, mangas, contes, poésie, beaux livres, etc.

→ Je prends également en compte les films, fiction ou documentaire, et pourquoi pas les séries tv.

→ Certains livres peuvent regrouper plusieurs des menus cités ci-dessus, si bien qu’on peut se demander où se donner de la tête. Comment y remédier ? J’avais pensé que si, admettons, vous avez déjà lu un livre sur les sirènes et que vous en lisez un autre sur les sirènes mais comprenant des monstres marins, il pourra entrer dans le sous-menu « Des monstres sous l’eau », pour citer un exemple.

🤔Qual Livro Você Tem E Que Acredita Que Quase Ninguém Tenha? Você tem, ou acredita ter, aquele livro na sua estante em que pensa: “nossa acho que quase ninguém deve ter esse livro”, seja por ele ser antigo, esgotado, raro, ou pouco conhecido? Sempre que eu arrasto o olho pela estante e me deparo com Sereia da Tricia Rayburn, eu sempre tenho a sensação de que quase ninguém deve ter esse livro, ou conhecer essa história, porque eu realmente não vejo ninguém falar desse livro. Já indiquei essa leitura outras vezes aqui no feed. É um livro bem divertido com aventura e um mistério muito gostoso que te prende do início ao fim. É uma trilogia que infelizmente os outros dois livros acabam nem se comparando ao primeiro que foi o melhor de todos.
