Now that one is fully ripe you can truly see the difference. This is a Chocolate Reaper (Red Carolina Reaper x Chocolate Trinidad Moruga Scorpion)
These both came from the same plant.
One is a full Chocolate Reaper while the other is a regular Trinidad Moruga scorpion.

What do you think henry's personality was like?
putting this under a readmore because i just know that i'm so insufferably annoying about this guy
so above all else i think we need to remember this guy was darling & beloved enough that someone else gave up his own chances of survival just to protect henry's words. He Was Very Dear To Someone. We Know This.
but i think he was very thoughtful and very clever, even for a guy in his 30s who hadn't been to school since he was 12. he was familiar enough with long-term life aboard a ship & knew that privacy was hard to come by, so he was smart enough to write nearly everything in his diary backwards. he mentions keeping an eye on "my frends" pretty regularly, and talks often about being concerned about if everything is "comfortabel". he often writes about what he "obsearved" and "went to sea" and what happened "on first/middel watch", and of course doodled the infamous lid bay 👁️, and there are times when he apparently "maid it my bisness" to check on things, even though a lot of what he's talking about were probably relatively mundane and nonspecific events aboard terror/amongst her crew while they were all fairly healthy and alright still. if the ships were ice-locked, he wouldn't have had a ton of work to do in the sails and rigging, so i suspect he started spending his time keeping track of what was going on with the crew which were (on average) about a decade and change younger than him. he was very concerned with being aware of his surroundings, but even more important, he was also very concerned about His People and His Friends being warm and comfortable and settled and well.
i also think he might have been a little bit odd compared to the average sailor-- the way he fills up pages is kind of sporadic and can range from really over-full and slanted and squished into one corner when he isn't thinking too hard about it, to pages that are nearly empty and carefully printed in very neat circles and spirals. obviously this isn't a very accurate way of gauging personality, but i think it's worth mentioning!! when he was writing for just himself, the pages are messy and crowded and rambling and strange, but when he was writing with an audience in mind, it's extremely neat and tidy and very carefully organized. and he was a bit of an archivist too-- there are scraps of pages that have fun clues like "lines writ in the arctic" and "lines writ april - november" and when things got dire, he put in the effort to write down an account of his long career in the navy. (he left out the year he was flogged from his career account, though. this was also one of the only pages he wrote in neat scripted forwards english, so it kind of indicates to me that it was something he was scared he would get judged posthumously for, and left it out on purpose. make of that what you will.)
i suspect also that he didn't particularly like the navy by 1845, but it was just what he had spent his life doing. in 1844/1845 he was trying to purchase a pub in westminster (and even put an ad in the newspaper looking for a polite young man to take over for him as bartender before he left for the expedition!!!), but probably ran out of money, and planned on doing one more navy job (with double pay!) to afford the final things for his pub, but sadly ummmm that never worked out. gesturing vaguely towards the overall disasters of the franklin expedition.
however, he was quite prone to being nostalgic. he writes very often about the great parties he remembers attending when he was young and warm and handsome ("party wot happened at trinadad", "the old sitty of cumanar [...] with singing and danceing", "sentimental song", etc) which might have been a coping mechanism for being cold and miserable in the arctic!!! but who knows!!! on the subject of drinking, though, he mentions his "grog shop" and "my bisness" and wanting a drink after having "hard ground to heave" so this was a guy who liked to drink. looked forward to having his grog rations. we can very confidently say this was a working class guy who liked relaxing and having fun and wanted to do Something Different after a lifetime of being kind of used and abused by the british navy.
so i dont knowwww i think he was far more thoughtful and caring and clever than he gets credit for. he wasn't a lieutenant or a superior officer, and on top of his handwriting being kind of convoluted and hard to read, the pages have been disregarded for a really long time because from the empire's perspective, what could a kind of poor working class guy who probably got cannibalized have to tell us? surely nothing significant. :)
but again. someone loved this guy enough to die protecting his letters and papers. he was cared for, and clearly there was a lot of love and concern in his own mind for his fellows as circumstances were getting more and more dire over time. and even despite those circumstances, he still found time to keep his own records of what happened, to teach others how to write, to help out when he could, to think about poetry and art, and to remember the parts of his life that made him happiest. 🫶

Last but certainly not least, is Trinidad. Funnily enough, Sonnie didn't realize that Trinadad was a shiny until long after it evolved from gimmighoul. It is Sonnie's second ace and like Khione, is a force to be reckoned with.

Netball is nothing like basketball because everyone has set positions and can only be on certain areas of the court. It's a non-contact sport known for having someone shove you with their ass while you're all in dresses.
If you didn't grow up with netball, it makes no sense because the only way to explain it is to play it.
It's big in Australia and New Zealand (the countries that have won the world cup for it), and it's also played in Jamaca, the uk, south Africa, and Trinadad to my knowledge
If netball was a sport in the states, the beef Hatchetfield had with clivesdale would be elevated to new heights because where I'm from there's 3 schools in a netball league and Hatchetfield High is a bunch of competitive assholes. Like they would play against clivesdale and Sycamore and the refs would regularly have to tell the Nighthawk teams to stop talking so much shit.
Steph would be goal shoot and Grace would be the wing defense on her team and Steph would hate her more for it
Ruth is the center or a WA/WD because no one is letting her near the circle and she throws the center off by flirting and also smelling bad
Stacy and Brenda play to keep fit for cheer. They take warm ups so fucking seriously
Someone please make a netball au with me, it would be so funny

*cracks knuckles* SPECULATION BASED ON RESEARCH 🖤
but actually i've done a lot of research into the 1834-1838 part of henry's life because thats when he was on hms gannet and i have rpf visions to find sources for!! so henry was twenty three years old and had met tom armitage (who is married and twenty nine btw) for the first time in '34-- it's a little unclear about how long tom was actually on the gannet BUT they definitely spent, at minimum, a year sailing together from '34-'35.
in the wallet which tom died protecting, henry has written a page where he's being nostalgic for a party he attended in "cumanar" which is cumana, venezuela. the only point in henry's very long and storied naval career where he was in cumana is between december thru january 1834-1835 while working on hms gannett-- which means tom was also there!
here's my transcript + facsimile of this page in question
so i went Hmmm what goes on between december and january that would be a big enough excuse for this british navy ship to allow the men to go fuck off to celebrate for a while in the city if they want to, and also would allow for some american (tourists(?)) to be hosting a party tent on the beach?
christmas
and then i remembered that there's also THIS fragment of paper where henry (in the arctic, between the months of april and november probably in 1846-1847 if i had to guess) remembered a party that happened in trinidad
so i went Hmmm isn't trinidad quite close to cumana? so i consulted my Insane Person Map Of Every Place Henry Ever Sailed To
and yep yeah for suuuuure cumana and trinidad are (relatively) right next to each other as port cities. so i would assume if the gannet is going from port to port, they would have landed at trinidad next, after stopping in cumana?
so i went Hmmm what's happening between christmas and january that that would be a big enough excuse for this british navy ship to allow the men to go fuck off for a while and drink and celebrate in the city if they want to?
new years eve.
SO at this point I run out of actually reliable sources and start fastening the speculative rpf goggles onto my head, but if henry (who is in his early twenties, got lashed last year in 1833, and hates his job) and the rest of the gannet crew get permission to fuck off and go drink, i'm assuming that mr. i-hate-my-job-and-also-want-to-own-a-pub-someday is gonna go drinking LMAOOO. so he probably walked along the beach or the city until he found a party, and oh-- some coworkers are there! we know he prefers a party with singing and dancing and drinking and it's even better in his perspective if the party people there speak a language he understands. so ofc he and the lads are gonna stick together as they venture out into the city, except stupid sexy tom armitage the AB is there, drinking and making eyes at him, and well.... who can say what happened....... but i think Something happened, because this party was so good that 13-15 years later when Henry's trapped in the arctic on terror, and he's hungry and miserable and sick and cold, he's remembering nostalgic half-drunk moments from this nye party to cope with being hungry and miserable and sick and cold.
and personally, if i'm in that position in the arctic, i'm gonna be fondly remembering a party where i had a half-drunk & over-emotional hookup more than anything else that happened that new years eve...... lmao.....
so long story short there isn't really a source, but in my heart, the cumana christmas party was like... henry was trying not to get in trouble lest he get lashed AGAIN but was having fun and definitely looking at tom. and then the party wot happened at trinadad was the party where he and tom actually hooked up, which later on when he's in his mid 30s in the arctic and has rekindled a relationship with tom, is something he remembers fondly and considers important enough to write down? but clearly henry was also very concerned about privacy (see: the writing backwards) so i think it's reasonable to assume he's not gonna get into much specific detail about what happened, just in case something else horrible happen to either him or tom because of someone snooping thru his papers and they get outed as middle aged fags for something they did in their 20s? but still its a rough set of circumstances to be in, so y'know i'll allow it, this dude can get his comforts wherever he can find them imo.
so anyways: december 31, 1834 is probably when he and tom consummated their affair. in my opinion. yayyyy. AND THEN THIRTEEN YEARS LATER IN 1846 HE AND TOM GET TO AWKWARDLY STAND AROUND ON BEECHEY ISLAND AND FEEL REALLY DEPRESSED WITH THE REST OF THE CREW ON JANUARY 1ST AS THEY ALL BURY TWENTY YEAR OLD FIRST-TIME SAILOR JOHN TORRINGTON IN THE PERMAFROST ON THE BEACH. WHICH I'M SURE THEY FELT NORMAL ABOUT. but at least hey-- remember that party wot happened in trinadad? 🥲?
"its the holiday season approaching❣️🎄❄️"
WRONG. its peglarmitage's raw and nasty midnight hookup on a beach in trinidad anniversary and then it's immediately the john torrington coughing himself to death in hms terror's sickbay ice mummification anniversary. and then you get a couple days to recover and then it's the john hartnell also coughing himself to death in hms erebus' sickbay ice mummification anniversary. get with the times fr 🙄
