Hi dear friends,

I've been chipping away at TSL backgrounds and working on the walkthrough some more. I also did a bit of sprite work for Resonance in Orbit--here's another unserious character introduction for you!

I've also been working on the actual character intro files, because I want to be able to fill up the itch page in the near future :)

Also! Did you know that another Queer Bundle will be running next month? Keep an eye on their twitter and their itch page!

While I'll still be around in June (and updating my Patreon like always) I'm going to skip the devlog for June 12. I'm going to be really busy with some IRL things during that time and won’t be behind my desk much. Rest assured work will still continue (quietly and slowly) in the background, as always.

Gracie's story is incredibly complex and I really respect her bravery for sharing all of that with the public. The response of the fandom... it's telling that most of them don't know how to react to certain parts of it. Gracie is not a perfect victim and the hate on her from fans for her being the blonde American, for being that so-called pinnacle of white privilege who must be upholding racism was so well documented. It really makes me realize that most of the vocal FS fandom consist of people who are desperate for entertainment and drama in their lives and projected so many things on skaters and hope that meltdowns or scandals will happen to them so they themselves can feel meaningful when they can do their performative moral white knighting, or trying to be their best edgy not-like-other-people self by coming up with the meanest opinions possible about skaters who are acceptable to hate for being flawed people. And the rest are sheep desperate to fit in with no confidence of shaping their own thoughts and opinions about the skaters and the sport, frantically following or echoing those hot takes blindly.

A perfect message anon, I connect to it on so many levels.

It's also mind-blowing how the fs fandom learns nothing - the only legitimate response to the CAS report on Kamila's doping is to be outraged that a 15 years old was given over 60 different medications and supplements likely by her coaches and federation and how none of them bothered to actually help with her defense. Instead, you get a million crappy jokes on strawberry deserts and TSL gossiping on her father not being around or whatever. I've been vocal about Kamila deserving the 4 years suspension. That does not negate the fact that I think she's also a victim - and like Gracie, she's an imperfect one.

All of these is giving me strong flashbacks to the toxicity of the V/M fandom, to this day I see on Twitter some of their unhinged long-term fans "educating" new fans on the "facts" about TS that are just pure fanfic. And I also remember how hated Vincent Zhou was after fanyus marked him as a target and too many in the fs fandom followed because he liked a harmless Ben Shapiro tweet (which makes him transphobic apparently though the tweet had nothing to do with trans people). Only after people learned that he is abused at home and him coming forward about is mental health struggles they took a step back from attacking him.

How the fs fandoms fail to internalize that we know NOTHING about the skaters' lives outside of the little we watch them is the key to these fandoms remaining highly toxic.

I wasn’t around back when Olivia and Adrian got denied the 2018 Olympic spot - there’s lots of jokes on the Twitter about how Marie France threatened to quit coaching. I’m sure that’s an exaggeration but is that just regarding MF being S/D’s coach or is there more to the drama?

No, there was an actual quote from MF, I think it was an interview maybe with TSL, don't quote me, and she said something along the lines of it really made her rethink her profession/made her think about stepping away. It's not an exaggeration at all.

Kaitlyn Weaver says the powerpoint TSL posted was just for preliminary discussion purposes and Tim Koleto’s hilarious Twitter post I think reflects the bafflement a lot of skaters and coaches and fans are expressing. So it might still get ditched. I mean, usually rhythms are set by Worlds and everyone has known the pattern was Paso for two months so I’m not convinced these discussions were *that* preliminary, but if the feedback isn’t good then there’s still time just to set a paso/flamenco/rumba/tango RD for next season. I think 21st century music will stay in some form for the Olympic season though, because that’s when you want skating to be the most accessible.

Tell Me About Your Thirsty Sword Lesbian OCs!

I am not just a girl who worked on TSL, I genuinely love Thirsty Sword Lesbians. Before I was asked to work on it I claimed on Twitter that I thought it was my favorite TTRPG I ever played. I was like a month after that that April approached me work on the game. I have GMed so many games of TSL since I discovered the game one shots and campaigns and played so many games of TSL. This game is such a huge part of my life even outside of designing for it. I've done multiple campaigns, tons of one shots, I plan on doing more too. If I had the freedom I'd do a TSL game like 6 days a week and the 7th day to test out other systems. This is to say as a big part of the fan side of TSL I want to hear about y'alls OCs and gush about mine. I'll start

I adapted one of my characters Serena [who debuted in my web novel Love Beyond The Holy Light] into a magical girl for a short Sparkle Heart Campaign with some friends. They were all retired magical girls who defeated a big bad in college. Serena was a Matriarch [which is a check reference cuz The Iconic Matriarch is my OC that is her adoptive mom] who settled down, had a family of kids who needed homes she was raising and left behind her old traumatic days. The girl had been brainwashed and turned into the evil vampire queen saved by the rest of the sparkle hearts she joined the team and helped them defeat the evil that once controlled her. Serena remembered all the broken promises and things she left behind and by the end worked at a Bakery with her long time crush now openly polyamarous with her and the rest of the team, living happily ever after, making sweets to bring ab it of joy into everyone's lives. It was such a good little story, there is way more but I wanna keep it short.

I think there are valid arguments for IAM being more proactive with respect to the Sorensen allegations but I also can understand that they may not want to step into the fray. It’s more complicated because they also have a PR/Agent relationship and presumably those services were used to help craft the statements that he and Laurence made. I would not be surprised if the team retires after worlds — it would not surprise me if it IAM has at least removed any minors from sessions with them.

But the other question of why fans are so obsessed with IAM, part of it is the way IAM have positioned themselves and their prominence in the sport. I mean there are other sports with dominant coaching teams but IAM is unique even within that category.

But I think it’s also a vestige of having such a large VM component in the figure skating fandom. VMies were overly invested in IAM and especially in Patch and Marie-France as the mentors and friends of VM and the embodiment of the shipper fanfic fantasy of VM coaching together in Montreal or whatever. And Scott continuing to operate a branch of IAM adds fuel to that fire. I’m hoping that that aspect of the fandom continues to fade out.

That's false to my knowledge, I.AM are not the agents nor do they do PR for their skaters. They politick for them and they likely advice them on how to conduct themselves for appearances so judges will reward them, but most skaters are represented by IMG or other agencies (if at all) and those agencies help book them shows, interviews, sponsorship, and so on. It's not I.AM who get any of that for their skaters. I would expect the statements made by FB/S were drafted after consulting with lawyers, not PR agencies (or at least a combination of legal and PR services). And yes, I too expect FB/S to retire after worlds.

There's definitely a part of the interest in I.AM that stems from their connection with V/M. That being said at this point I don't think that's the biggest factor. Essentially I.AM are so dominant that it's a given to hate them right now. You keep seeing the Twitter fs fandom lashing our about I.AM "ruining skating" and how they can't wait for their demise, with the proofs being F/G and C/B. While I find both teams overscored and lacking, it is not a coincidence that they getting hit while G/P for example are mostly getting a pass although they've been producing a lot of mediocre skating since 2021/22 (Piper in particular unfortunately). It's normal to hate the #1 school, and I.AM dominance is kind of unheard of in terms of the sheer number of world level teams they coach. And it also didn't help that TSL started the "Marie France is collecting judges" crap (and let's as usual ignore the misogyny side of putting it on her and not on her two male partners), though it definitely helps them, looking closely at the protocols shows that the "voting blocks" are formed not by their relation to I.AM but by the relation between federations.

i’m listening to The Archer for the first time in awhile and i’m kind of contemplating..

because sometimes i wonder, if we roll things back and let’s say taylor came out in 2019 and karlie and taylor magically also let go of their men, and if they publicly started being together, and for the sake of it lets also say the pandemic didn’t happen. in this timeline, would they have started a family by 2022?

i only wonder this because, i think about everything that is singularly unique about their circumstance, and taylor’s in particular, where she has probably hundreds of blacklisted stalkers and actual criminals that have tried to break in to her properties, i think about how she said she keeps military dressing (bandages) with her at all time in case she is attacked, i think about that part in miss americana where she had to go up against her father and management and i think about how so many republican fans of hers burned her cds and merch after she took a political stance, i think about every weirdo i’ve ever seen in her comments on twitter or instagram etc and all the weirdos i ran into on TSL, like i’m talking dudes that think they are the reincarnation of christ and taylor is their wife given to them by god (yes there was a person who was like this) or dudes that think she is the antichrist, and i think about even without the closeted angle she has an incredible burden of anxiety, and a drive for perfection, and i think about a handful of other things and just how… how, while yes there were children and parents in both the Lover and The Man music videos, i really wonder if, had taylor come out during lover era, if she would have had the magically positive reception needed for her personally to feel safe and secure enough to start a family. like i think it’s entirely possible that whatever resolve she may have had could have changed upon the reality of being a super public and divisive figure again.

…an age old question that people often ask themselves or one another is “if you could go back and do things differently, would you change anything?” and i think, well at least in my experience, this kind of thought experiment vastly *viscerally* changed for me after my first kid was born. i think about all the tiny moments in my life where if x hadn’t happened, i wouldn’t have met or i wouldn’t have married my partner, i might have done different things or ended up with other people. and for a time in my life it was fun to think about the different me’s i could have been. but now, thinking about it as a parent, every one of these split second decisions that led me to here give me the chills. as humans our children are truly handed to us on gossamer threads that can be broken so easily. as for me, my kid is connected to me because i grabbed a flier from a person on the street one time, or because i summed up the nerves to ask for a phone number, for example. one tiny thing and poof, your kids never happen, or different kids happen. perhaps it depends on the person but… these days i would absolutely not change a thing if it meant i would never meet my kids.

so is life. but, i don’t know and… i apologize for the weirdly sentimental or heavy pondering but, i don’t know, over the past year i have grown to feel a certain similar sentiment about, *gestures broadly*, all this, and that is only to say that, speaking in broad strokes, i often… sometimes i feel like i am beginning to see silver linings, or, possibilities that there is a kind of fulfillment for them that—while not public facing, not something we get to observe—has no real match in a kind of alternate timeline that is often… often held up as the correct thing or the aspirational thing or the desirable thing or the deserved thing and… yeah. i dunno but, i guess i am just trying to see the gains because some days i feel as if this whole situation is seen for how much more awful it is that it should be had they done xyz. i see taylor or karlie go hard with their stuff and while there are external implications at times i have just sort of seen it as them casting a barrier shell over something that they’ve found that is worth protecting. to them. doesn’t mean it’s fair. doesn’t mean it’s just. doesn’t mean it’s interactively fun. but yeah. i tend to imagine that it means they are a little more at ease for forever what reason, and on a micro level, i can respect that and i can feel compelled to leave a light on, so to speak.
