Back home after spending the weekend in Los Cabos Mexico as guests for a destination wedding, which was absolutely spectacular. But it feels good to be back in real life! I'm excited to stay put for the next month and get back to my daily routines.

Inktober Day 07 ⁘ Drip
The Mage steps closer to me, like he’s stepping close to an animal. “You’ve come just in time,” he says softly. He lifts his hand and touches my face. I feel blood trickle down my cheek.
–Carry On, @rainbowrowell
“I’m sorry,” Simon says again. “I didn’t know.”
She smooths his hair back, sopping it. “Shhookay,” she burbles. “You put it back. And morrre.”
He bows his head and lets her hand fall over him.
–Wayward Son, @rainbowrowell

your penmanship is absolutely divine! what are some of your favourite fountain pen inks, if you have any and don't mind the nosy anon?
thank you kindle anon,
my all time favourite ink is platinum carbon black. I favour permanent or at the bare minimum slightly water resistant inks as I've had too many run ins with the rain and drenched papers. Whilst I use platinum carbon black as my main driver, I primarily use the iroshizuku inks as a complementary colours (say, when annotating my notes). My favourite being asa-gao.
Other inks I have enjoyed include, but not limited to: Diamine writer's blood and Pelham blue, Iroshizuku tsuki-yo, Lamy purple
though unprompted, my current collection is comprised of 4 pens: Pelikan M800, Pilot custom 74, Leonardo Momento Magico and the Pilot capless. All pens have an <M> nib which I ground down to a stub or cursive italic.

“Custom Namiki Falcon Resin Fountain Pen modified by John Mottishaw. He ground the nib (14k) extra fine and added flex to it (Spencerian customization). The nib requires medium pressure. The ink is Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo Night Sky (Greenish Deep Blue) which shades wonderfully on Bristol Board. This pen is difficult to use properly. Most fountain pens are not designed to achieve the line variation seen here.“ From Youtube channel TheImmovableMovers: Custom Namiki Falcon Resin Fountain Pen HD This is mesmerizing...

藍二乗 - ヨルシカ
Deep Indigo - Yorushika
So this song and artist are rather special to me. If I sort my playlist of Japanese music on Spotify by the order they were added in, then this song comes right after a block of My Hero Academia OPs and EPs, Crossing the Field from SAO, and a song by Nogizaka46. So this song comes pretty early in my J-Pop experience and Yorushika was the first J-Pop artist that I really took an interest in.
How to listen: I strongly recommend appreciating the YouTube version of this song. The video has really good English subtitles if you enable them. Additionally, the description below the video has translations of some text in the video. The video is also pretty solid in general.  https://youtu.be/4MoRLTAJY_0 https://open.spotify.com/track/5XApCrSTIAPapBPT1Vo4SZ?si=95ef84a46d0a4c63
Discussion: I feel like the title for this song is pretty apt. The image of Deep Indigo matches the melancholy, bleak, and hurt vibes of the song. Additionally, the YouTube video clarifies that the Japanese title (or at least parts of it) is homophonous with the words ‘grief’ and ‘love’, which gives some insight into the underlying narrative of the song. This song seems to be about the death of an individual named Elma, and the artist’s feelings in the wake of that loss. Elma is a recurring individual in Yorushika’s songs and the songs actually have a continuous narrative. The line “Because maybe the only value of a life is in they way it ends” makes me strongly inclined to believe that Elma died. Under that assumption, this is just such a sad, pained song. Singing about expiration dates on dreams, “ Life is just one compromise after another”, and “I don’t believe in hearts or fate or love songs or life / After all, if you can’t sell something it has no value”! It’s just such a bleak outlook that the artist paints and more I think and write about it, the more I almost feel like crying.
Another thing I love is that the song uses a lot of imagery related to writing and the video builds on that imagery quite a bit too. As someone who really likes nice paper and excellent writing instruments, that imagery rather resonates with me. The idea of filling in a notebook with the ink of our lives isn’t exactly a new analog, but Yorushika does portray the idea in a uniquely compelling manner. Additionally, as an individual with a liking for writing instruments I naturally had to identify the ink and pen used in this video. The ink is the Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo (moonlight) ink sold by Pilot and the Platinum 3776 Century, black with gold trim and a medium 14k nib (高すぎます!).
Anyway, I’ll probably make more posts about Yorushika’s music in the future and attempt to unravel the underlying narrative as I do so. So you could call this a ‘Part One’. I’m sure someone else on the internet has it soundly unraveled though in case any readers don’t want to wait on me.

WHATS YOUR FAVORITE FOUNTAIN PEN!!!!! I just got into them and they make my brain vibrate i spent all my money and bought 3!! a red lamy safari (it was like half off I had to) a jinhao shark pen (impulse buy) and a sailor fude nib! these were all within a day of receiving the first one because I instantly fell in love each time I got a new one. I'd love to know what one you use and if you use any for art? I'm moving to fountain pens to make sketching more fun so I don't have to take out a dip pen for fun ink colors but I haven't been able to find a pen with the same feel as a dip pen for my art so I'd love to know if you have any suggestions for that!! if anything like that even exists idk I'm very very new to this
OUUGH NICE!! i also have lamys and a jinhao shark (theyre so cute... how could i not) but omg i dream to own a sailor one day.
currently my faaaaavourite pen is my TWSBI ECO-T, but mainly because it's inked with pilot iroshizuku tsuki-yo and i'm really loving the colour!! as u can see i definitely am using my pens for art, hehe.
Tumblr media
next to that i always find myself reaching for my lamys (safari and nexx) and kaweco sport. heres my pen case because i wanna share hehee
Tumblr media
(im still waiting for the replacement barrel on that blue lamy)
as for switching from dip to fountain pens - i haven't had much experience with dip pens but i know that fountain pens tend to be made with thicker/stronger nibs and you're probably feeling a bit of that loss of flexibility and control. i'd suggest looking into soft and flex nib pens (though they can be on the more expensive side).
jetpens offers the pilot elabo (soft) and the opus 88 (flexi) but if anyone has more suggestions that are more affordable i (and probably anon!) would love to hear about them!!
ooh update: gouletpens has a whole flex nib category with some more options!!

Inktober Day 12 Whale I really liked how this turned out. Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo is one of my favorite inks and it looks good on display here. I used my fountain pen to draw the outlines, my brush to fill in most of the color and my water brush for the washes. . . . . #inktoberday12 #inktober #inktober2018 #antvink #fountainpen #ink #drawing #sketch #pen #artistsoninstagram #whale #ocean #iroshizuku #tsukiyo #visconti #viscontihomosapiens #brush #waterbrush (at Riverton, Utah) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo1m7XxgHig/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=e97t8h2rs1p3
