Number Five is such a weird choice to make asexual and aromantic, when you really look at his character.

Ignoring the Fivela stuff from the last season, since so many people hate it and it would distract from my point, we see Five instigating a lot of sexual advances towards people. In the comics he was the classic old man that was hitting on much younger girls, played as a joke because he's visibly childlike. In the show, we see Five hitting on Delores and making references to their sexual exploits ("You remember that wine cellar? Where we... yeah, [laughter]). He's also very much in love and very much involved with Delores, she's his wife in the romantic sense and he loves her. He made her up in his mind and if he had just wanted a companion, he would have made her such instead of making her into his wife. He also goes to kiss her when Jayme creates the illusion of her in his mind instead of just hugging her.

Viktor, on the other hand, is a very good choice to make aroace.

As an aroace person myself, I believed that I had to have romantic and sexual attraction for a long while because it was all society let me to believe that life was about. I tricked myself into thinking that because I was romantically involved with someone or thought that they were pretty, I had to be sexually attracted to them as well. I also believed that I was romantically interested in people after they had shown that attraction to me or when someone else gave me the suggestion.

Viktor is much the same way. In season one, he's absolutely starved for affection and that's why he falls into Leanord/Harold's hold so easily. He isn't attracted to him, we don't get any blushing or looking him up and down. He seems pretty put off and uncomfortable by Harold when they first meet, but slowly he gets wrapped up in his web because Harold is giving him the approval and praise that he's longed for his entire life and he's associating going off his meds with being around this new person he's just met. Sissy is a harder argument, but they're raising a child together and she's the only person being consistently nice to him (and ends up coming on to him later which never helps when you're struggling with figuring out if you're aroace). It's possible that Viktor is having another deep connection with someone and mistaking it for romantic or sexual attraction. My biggest point to him being aroace is the fact that he has incredible failures with all of his relationships in the gap between the end of s3 and beginning of s4. Especially with him being called childish, that could just be him not knowing how to navigate romantic relationships because he doesn't feel that kind of love.

did we all watch different shows or did we all just like forget that choices can be made for a story we dont like? because to me it kinda looked like five and lila had been developing a close relationship well before they got trapped, which was probably platonic for most of them but that showed signs of maybe lila having feelings for five??? and then they get trapped and as incredibly close partners with no sign of anyone else they develop feelings for each other??? when they dont even know if their families are still in existence let alone how to get there??? and yeah five's hiding of the journal wasnt the SMARTEST idea nor was it the most morally correct but like.... he was trapped for 40 years going insane in another apocalypse with a woman, so he felt right at home in his current situation and (HES RIGHT) there was no guarantee the "home" they went back to would even exist let alone be happier for them then what he thought they had at the same time. was five fucked up? sure. was it kinda ooc? yeah. was it the craziest character assasination, homewrecking, etc??? fuck no? like actually what were you guys watching. also fucking lila had told diego she wanted time away from him to do her own thing before her and five got trapped.

Listen, with all due respect, I don't give a fuck about what Five would or wouldn't do. It takes two to tango, and I don't believe that Lila would change so fundamentally from a chaos gremlin who loved Diego to distraction, into some lobotomised cottagecore manic pixie dream sex toy. This was all set up so that Five could get laid, lbr. They could have given him a mannequin and a Fleshlight for the same effect.

And if, as Steve Blackman claims, she and Five are so right for each other bc they have such similar experiences, blah blah blah, why did he need to shoehorn them into a situation where they're stranded alone for 7 years to even reach the point of having sex? He couldn't even convince himself that it was plausible without cooking up the most extreme nonsense - and even then, like 90% of the fandom has called bullshit.

As if the degree of similarity of experience is such a key factor in a romance, anyhow. All the Umbrellas had a background more similar to Lila's than to Joe or Jane Public, but those are external factors, they all responded differently. Hell, by that argument, why didn't he make Lila and Allison the endgame ship: after all, they were raised by sociopaths who turned them into weapons, they experienced life in the 60s as WOC, they were both parents...

(And that's not even getting into the fact that this was all a writing choice, as others have said. It wasn't inevitable, it didn't have to happen, it added nothing to the plot and contradicted past characterisations. It's just masturbatory.)

honestly ship what you want and everything, but i lose all respect for incest shippers the moment they start spouting on about how "these characters would only do this for each other if they had romantic feelings!!" like literally never is that the fucking case. no act of love in the universe is inherently romantic.

So...my super unpopular opinion right now: I don't hate season 4 of Umbrella Academy.

I think perhaps it's because I'm Ye Olde fandom participant now and just think that it's genuinely not that serious.

Was the writing good? Not really. Was there continuity? Absolutely not (and I suppose an argument could be made that it's by design). Were some of the characterizarions cringey and miss the mark? Yeah.

But, honestly, I had a good time with it. I even liked Five/Lila (and I know y'all will come for me about that 🫣).

As I understand it, the show deviated from the canon enough that it's kind of it's own thing. And let's be real, the entire show is not the pinnacle of writing. The whole thing is a bit of a cluster fuck, but it's certainly entertaining for me.

I think this is one of those seasons you don't dig too deep into because it works better if you squint a bit (or a lot, maybe unfocus your eyes completely) . Or you can write it off entirely, which is valid, too.

By all means, analyze and be critical of our media, but at the end of the day, it's really not that serious. And fix it fics exist for times like these!

I wanted to put off making this post for as long as possible, but I think that the TUA fandom needs it. If you're going to make a post complaining about the ending, that is totally up to you, but I am fucking begging y'all to tag it as tua critical or something. You don't have to do anything because the internet is a free place to do whatever you want that's not fascism but please. You are ruining the fandom space by plaguing it with the same three complaints (they're not even well thought out criticisms at this point and they stopped being relatively funny last week)

For those of us that liked the season: perhaps we should start tagging our stuff with something like tua positive or something so it's easier to find people that aren't just complaining. Idk really, I just want to find other people that enjoyed the season or at least some people that are willing to talk about something other than how they didn't like the ship that was canonized or the ending they didn't fully grasp.

okay the cross tagging in the tua fandom has gotten way out of hand. i’m just really frustrated right now because this is ridiculous. if you want someone to see your post, tag it correctly. don’t add a bunch of random fandom related tags about characters that aren’t even mentioned just so you can get more notes.

there is actually a Reason for this alright? it’s not just rules for the sake of rules. when you tag in an unrelated tag, it clogs it up with posts that aren’t related (stay w me here). so if someone’s looking through their favorite character’s tag they don’t want to see a random incorrect quote in the general fandom NOT EVEN MENTIONING THE CHARACTER. when it gets really intense, it’s difficult to even find posts that mention the character (cough cough the ben hargreeves tag cough cough)

tagging is an organization system that helps people find stuff. you are making it ineffective and frustrating to use by crosstagging. please stop.

pls do not:

-tag “character a” in a post about “character b” and “character c” because they are all in the same show/book/video game etc

-tag an incorrect quotes post with every character in the fandom. (you know who you are. yes i’m targeting iq acc’s because they do this A LOT but lots of ppl do it!!)

-tag a general post about tua with the characters (this one has nuance, like many other things in the world. just use your best judgement like i trust you!!!)

also usually i wouldn’t tag a fandom post about fictional characters with the actors that play them??? like it would have to be a v specific situation so idk why people do this. you are not writing analysis of emmy raver lampman?? hello??

anyway lmk if you have any more tips. i’m not the tagging police (ACAB) so take everything i say with a grain of salt because i am not the ruler of the tua fandom or tumblr! i’m just seeing a problem in this community that i know other people are bothered by. alr live your life just be considerate of other ppl while ur doing ur thing 👍

But seriously, adoption can describe so many different situations that there's no hard and fast rule about it. "It always is" and "It always isn't" are both false statements. So no, we can't and never will just all agree ;)

I'm in a new fandom where the main tag tends to be filled with self-insert shipping and the most popular ship (which manages to be both super popular but is also considered problematic which feels almost unheard of these days lol). And people complain about these things in the tag but they never post anything they *want* to see? They could be posting gifs or meta analysis or headcanons or shitposts or screenshots but they don't. They expect other people to provide it for them. I think being a lurker in fandom is fine, but you can't then complain because the people not lurking are just doing fandom in a way you dislike??

Yeah. Honestly, I get it because I was just a silent lurker in fandoms for a long, long time (long time followers may remember that I didn't start really making my own posts and interacting with people until I got into TUA) and the only "content" I made was complaints and discourse posts.

I think a lot of people are in the same boat I was in, where they think that because they aren't an artist or a strong writer or something, then no one wants to hear what they have to say and they have nothing to offer to a fandom and that is so so so far from the truth. Even if all you're doing to create fandom content is making some tumblr posts or writing fics that took you 15 minutes, that's still something and if you keep doing that, then you're going to build up a nice little space for yourself with other people who like the same kind of stuff you do and like to hear what you have to say.

So like. Instead of making another post complaining about how the sort of content you like doesn't really exist, why not make a post about the thing you like? If you want more of a ship, make a post about that ship. If you want more of a certain trope, make a post using that trope. If all you ever do is put down what other people, then even the people who are into the same stuff you are aren't gonna want to be around you.

It was interesting to draw not just a simplified horse, but someone else's simplification of a horse. Those are different shapes than I do! Also, a note on Delores' hair: she's bald in the show because of course she is, it's pretty common for mannequins to be bald, but why would a carousel statue lady be bald? They're not gonna put a wig on those, the hair would be molded on. So I drew her as having had hair at some point, but broken off by now
