Wildfire self care
Your situation: you're in California, and it's wildfire season. Something is burning, and the air is too full of poisonous smoke to go outside. You're safe, you're not hosting any evacuees. You're still not in a good place mentally though, maybe really on edge or scared, and being trapped inside is not helping. You can't leave town, so what to do? How do you help yourself?
1. Fix your home
First, you want to get some sheer curtains and put them up on every window. Any color will do, just make sure they're translucent enough that you can see out, but not very well. The idea is to disguise the visible smoke. If you get white or gray colored, that's nicest for keeping things bright inside. Red tones will disguise smokey sunlight (which tends to be orangeish) and blue tones will be darker (not recommended for SAD sufferers).
Next get out a humidifier if you have one, and any air filters. Put them in rooms you spend the most time in, especially the bedroom and (if you have kids) children's room. Lacking that, boil some water or turn on the shower and let the steam roll around. All this will help keep the air clean and keep you from drying out.
Avoid using perfumes and cooking anything you're likely to burn. Avoid cooking anything with a strong smell, even a good one. You can't open the window.
2. Your body needs help too
Smoky air is ridiculously dry, so treat that, and whole you're at it, treat yo self. Use whatever shower products you have marked "moisturizing," and remember your lotion. Keep a chapstick in your pocket. Drink extra water, more than usual.
Clear some space and do a calethstenics based workout instead of going to the gym. (This is assuming you go to the gym on a normal day; if they have an air circulation system, keep on doing that.) If you don't usually work out, now is a good time for some yoga or just a jog in place. Staying inside has a way of building up nervous energy.
Whatever consumables you were saving for a special occasion, this is that occasion. Drink the champagne. Make the cookies. Do the shrooms. Do a nice bath or foot soak with that Lush thing you have.
3. Get your head on right
This is the hard part. When trapped inside by wildfires, the boredom coupled with the fear is incredibly wearing, even if anxiety isn't usually a problem for you. The thing here is to stay occupied. Binge that series. Read a book or three. Deep clean your house (don't use cleaners with strong smells or harmful fumes). Bathe the cat, finish any long term projects. Anything, so long as you can focus on it.
If at all possible, try not to be alone for too long. Everyone you know is in the same position as you, so call them up. Get together and make a nice dinner, maybe build a blanket fort or play laser tag with pointers. Be goofy, have fun. Tire each other out. (This goes especially if you have kids; their schools are closed, and ain't no antsy like a child antsy.)
Resist the urge to get updates on the fire every four seconds. If your area is not in danger, try to limit yourself to one or two updates. (If you are in an at risk area, by all means stay up to date, being safe is your #1 priority. Just remember that there's a difference between staying up to date, and feeding a fear demon.)
Help out, when you can. There's hundreds of places to give cash, items, and support. It will be good for your soul, and save you from the frustrating despair of "nothing you can do." If you're too far away or can't spare money, reach out to anyone in the burning areas you may know. Even a small amount of love makes a huge difference to someone who literally just walked out of Hell.
A lot of my town burned down last autumn. This year it's the next county over. It looks like it's going to be a pattern, so stay on the healthy side when you can. Humans are strong. We will overcome this new thing.

MACKLEMORE sings ONE LOVE to a sold out house as fires riot red an hour away in napa & sonoma last october. this is the clip I wanted to post yesterday, the first minute to accompany the last minute I posted Saturday, in celebration of equality unity & pride month. click the link in my bio to see the full clip. lifes been beyond busy & instagram is the first thing to go when I need to be present & juggle life. and Ive been juggling nonstop. five shows in five days & a two hour commute each way or sleeping in san jose without the baby Brixton our toddler. today begins three days off, all already packed with motherhood, matron of honor duties with my best friend, meetings recovery sponsees & legal mumbo jumbo ughness to resolve a civil case I pressed to finally close the chapter of my life in ojai & ventura county. just. a. lot. not as much as when pI cut my way thru a blanket of smoke to work the MACKLEMORE show, three days into the tubbs fire with a few boxes of my life - my favorite band shirts my guitar my photos my wedding dress my important paperwork - packed in the event evacuation orders extended to our home while I worked my shift. half of the audience probably had their cars packed too. it felt odd but necessary to be there - working a hip hop show while firefighters worked to save homes memories lives - not just for me but for everybody else who needed a respite from the anxiety & fear burning brightly 60 miles away. it continued to burn for almost a month. for us the lines held one town away, to the north from the tubbs fire & to the east from the nuns fire. about a month later Id almost lose my home in ojai where fire lines held less than a mile away to the north, east & south. i pray those in lake county right now are similarly blessed. the full 5 min clip is on my youtube channel, the link is in my bio xox #macklemore #onelove #musicmonday #livemusic #concertphotographer #onstage #ontour #lovewins #lgbtq #gaypride #pride2018 #equality #tubbsfire #nunsfire #lifegoeson #carryon #cometogether #unity #werisetogether #rebuild #toddlermom #boymom #workingmom #justfortoday #odaat #wedorecover

Why isn’t the California Wildfires trending here?? We are burning and many of Santa Rosa lost their homes in just a short time! The air here is getting bad and many are still evacuating.
Curfews have been set in Mandatory Evacuation areas. Many roads have been closed. Fountaingrove and White Oak got Boil Water notices. Larksfield-Wikiup got DO NOT DRINK WATER notices.
As far as I know the Tubbs Fire is at 0% and Nuns Fire 0% or 1% containment. Those are the fires within my county. My home is not anywhere near those flames but the winds won’t be helpful.
Update: the Nuns Fire is now at 2%
For donations(100% of donations goes to those affected)

My sister ( @terratears ) and I are doing charity commissions! If you have not heard, our home of Northern California has had over 15+ wildfires since October 8th.  Half of our hometown is still under mandatory evacuation. Our house included. The fires are slowly being contained.
Every cent made from these commissions will go towards helping victims. We’ll be donating via these links:
Youcaring -  Tubbs Fire Victims - Santa Rosa Community
Redwood Credit Union - North Bay Fire Relief
Feel free to donate directly! Any sort of support will be greatly appreciated! Thank you and spread the word please!
Asking for commissions via ask or DM is fine.

Updates
For anyone who has checked on me, sent me private messages, etc.
Some good news today. The Atlas Peak fire (Napa and Solano Counties) now has 1900 personnel working it and is 27% contained. Some of the fires in Sonoma County have merged into one, but that is positive in a way because it means they have less perimeter to control. The fire in Mendocino is still going strong.
Weather conditions are very good today for fighting, but will go back to higher winds and low humidity tonight and into tomorrow; however, it won't be anything like Sunday night when all this started because of the quantity of First Responders out there and ready. There are crews and mutual aid from all over the country and even Canada and Australia that helping.
ICE has officially suspended routine enforcements and shelters only take names for purposes of knowing who is safe, they can not and simply aren't interested in asking anything about immigration status - life safety is the only goal now.
The amount of volunteers and donations is amazing. Some places have had to turn away volunteers and asked people to stop bringing food.
Can't see any flames or glow from my house currently, although the air quality is very very bad. The public schools, colleges, and universities all around the fires won't be open for students again until next various days next week.
There are a few areas that are being repopulated and those returning residents need to remain vigilant for any safety concerns. Many areas are still under mandatory or advisory evacuation status, such as the entire town of Calistoga.
The official loss of life is 31 and that will probably go up. Still 100's technically missing, although lack of communication has been the main problem and 500+ have been located and are safe.
Still have a long way to go. ❤️

Wildfires in Northern California right now are some of the worst in California History.  The top photo I took from my front porch early Monday morning in Redwood Valley, CA. That ridge is maybe a mile from my home. I had to run to my neighbors and make sure they were awake and wake up my father as well so we could evacuate. This fire was moving FAST. I mean 70 mph fast. Like dripping water down the hillside only it was treetops caught ablaze.
We watered our yard as best we could in the dark night. The silence punctuated by exploding vehicles and propane tanks.
All during this time, my grandparents lost their home in a city an hour away from me. The bottom two photos are what is left of their home in Fountain Grove in Santa Rosa, CA.
I am posting this because we need help. Northern California needs help. 40 people and counting have died. 3500 and counting homes destroyed. 40,000 people displaced.  If you would like to donate to the fire relief fund, Redwood Credit Union is collecting. You can specify a county or generalize it to all effected counties. They don’t take taxes out like Go Fund Me.
If you are nearby! and have HORSE and LIVESTOCK experience. Many horses were turned loose and badly burned as well as other livestock and are being kept at the Ukiah Fair Grounds and Sonoma County Fair Grounds. The staff there could use help bandaging, watering and feeding.  Lastly, PLEASE be fire cautious. PLEASE be aware that climate change is extending fire season around the world. PLEASE don’t start something like this. I never want to see a community go through what we are going through.
