Thanks for reading my guidelines. I go by the mun-alias Midnight, also Raven (she/they), early millennial, living in the CET timezone. My activity level is medium to low, my reply speed is slow, please don't rush me. English is my second language. I'm from a german roleplay community and immigrated to Tumblr in 2022 after our old platform got shut down. I'm still learning about Tumblr rp etiquette and guidelines, please be patient with me. If you see me doing something unusal or weird feel free to correct me at anytime but be respectful about it.

01. To interact with me, you have to be 18+ (mun and muse). I am not affiliated with The Boys, its creators or the actor Karl Urban and I don't own the character Billy Butcher. I claim ownership of my own written headcanons and texts only. The Boys is an R-rated series and this is a general trigger warning for mature content such as blood, gore, violence, abuse, trauma, sex, sick humour, foul language, weapons, drug use and overall rude behaviour which can be expected from this muse.

02. It should go without saying but at the same time cannot be stressed enough: mun ≠ muse. On some occasions people were not able (or willing) to differentiate between me and my character which led to them feeling offended ooc and hardblocking me midconvo without communicating their discomfort. Butcher can be tremendously rude and aggressive, he swears excessively and is quick to insult your muse if he dislikes them or feels provoked. Writing him close to the canon is very demanding and getting his tone of voice and demeanor right is one of the greatest challenges that I've ever came across in 15+ years of writing. It's such a bummer when I put in the effort and the result is totally misinterpreted. Make sure beforehand that you can absolutely handle interacting with such a muse and do not take anything from him personal or too serious. I am completely different from him, I consider myself friendly, patient and very chill about most things and I'm always willing to talk things out.

03. Besides roleplaying I am also a hobby gif maker, therefore personal blogs are welcome to interact with my posts. Just make sure you don't reblog or comment on roleplay related stuff which includes tag games, writing examples, headcanons, threads and answered asks. Speaking of asks: I will generally react in-character whenever possible. I've received some messages in my inbox that I can't quite classify. If you want to talk to me, the person behind, please put your text in brackets or mark as "for the mun" so I know for sure you're addressing me and not my muse.

04. I haven't very much in-character text on this blog yet, since I mostly rp privately in DM's or on sideblogs. I'm very open and curious to try threads, I'd love to have some writing on my blog whether it be novels, oldschool style shorter postings or some in-character chatting. This would come closest to the 'Pinnwand' we had on our old platform and I still miss it a lot. I'm using the beta editor, which should be standard at this point anyways, and I am able to trim posts. Feel free to hit me up if you're interested and are comfortable with doing any sorts of public threads. You can also just send me an ask (off anon to start a continuous interaction) or tag me in a starter. I highly prefer german and I'm not open to english advanced literate, where complex prose is required. I have little to no experience with it but maybe I'll get more comfortable in the future.

05. When it comes to writing, I ask for a few things: no godmodding, power play or meta gaming. I also don't like forcing or rushing certain interactions that don't feel like natural character progression. Plotting beforehand is welcome but not mandatory. If it ever feels like being stuck we can pause the writing and have a small plotting session between scenes or even for the same scene. I am a big fan of the "yes, and" approach. Give me something to work with, don't let your replies be "dead" and passive. I get discouraged very quickly when I get little to no input and have to come up with moving the plot or interactions myself all the time. I don't have an estimated length for texts, it always depends and I usually don't match length just for the sake of having written a lot. I am not too fond of texts that are artificially bloated and there's essentially nothing happening.

06. I'm multiship and multiverse, meaning every ship takes place in its own verse if not communicated otherwise. I personally enjoy shipping a lot if there's good chemistry but Butcher is difficult to ship and due to his background pretty much unavailable for romantic bonding. It's not impossible though. I'm also interested in any setting where I get a chance to write him as an unhinged villain and diverge from the canon more liberately.

07. My approach to curating my dashboard is quite different, I would say, compared to what's considered standard (clean dash, small circle of mutuals). I follow a lot, and I mean a shitton, of people. I follow every blog out of interest and curiousity but please understand that it's impossible for me to interact with everyone. Also due to my gif making I get quite a bit of notifications when I'm actively posting sets, I'm prone to accidentially miss out on notifs about new followers/mutuals. My dashboard is fast and busy and I like it that way, I've made a conscious choice about this. It has become a wind down ritual for me, just silently scrolling, catching up and finding lots of stuff I enjoy without feeling obligated to contact people or getting replies done. Yes, I am here for rp, but I like to do lots of other things on Tumblr, too. There's periods of time where I don't have the energy to work on drafts or talk to anyone, not even folks who I have grown to genuinely like. Rest assured that you never did anything wrong when I disappear for a while. If I have any sort of issue or problem I will communicate it. What I'm not willing to do is constantly giving activity updates on a schedule. If I go on hiatus for longer I will most likely make a post about it. It's my personal opinion that no one should ever feel pressured into explaining why and for how long they are away.

08. Don't be a cunt. I have zero tolerance for homophobia, transphobia, racism, ableism, sexism, hateful comments in general, out of character drama, gossiping, constant negativity, passive aggressiveness, vague posting, guilt tripping, gaslighting and other similar behaviour. Just be a decent person and we're fine.

Also, to further commemorate this anniversary, I wanted to share some additional thoughts.

I am not good at social media, I just lack the skills and conscious determination of content creators, I mostly post randomly and I put little to no effort into growing my follower base. I've never really tried to become "famous" here (ngl, when I was younger I envied the popular blogs a little), but generally speaking, I just really like to draw and I want to share it with people, maybe getting to know some new people, making new friends even. For me, Tumblr's main purpose is being a platform for fandom interactions. I love how Tumblr operates with a different logic than other social media sites, how you have actual control over your own experience as it is not run by algorithms.

That's why it makes me a little sad how "Tumblr Etiquette" is not respected nowdays. I've been here for 12 years, and I am very extroverted, I have no problem with new people using this website, really, the more the merrier. As I said above, I don't really care about notes and follower counts, and I am not easily discouraged by having only a few notes on the stuff that I post. If I would be, then I will definitely put more effort into what I draw and create only what received more notes. (E.g. the Lily red carpet look pic has 14 notes as of today, while the domestic wolfstar pic is over 300, yet I am sure that I will not exclusively draw wolfstar from now on.)

Case in point, what I wanted to actually talk about is the poor reblog-like ratio. It makes me sad because I desperately crave the interaction and a like goes completely unseen here. (I know that you can make your likes visible, but most people, me included, check their dashboards only, and will check likes of certain people only if they are specifically looking for something.) My main driver is not the exposure or recognition or whatever in itself I get on my drawings (it is certainly a nice bonus tho). I want to interact with people, and I can only do that if the stuff I post is seen by them, aka reblogged. On my main blog I almost only post my artwork (I've reblogged 158 posts only in the past 12 years), but I have a sideblog especially for reblogging purposes (which comes with the nice bonus of making my "likes" searchable, because the tagging system is truly a wonder).

PSA: Etiquette and NSFW

This is a post about general interactions in DM's and followers. Common sense is just to be polite, but your milage may vary about what you consider ok and what is not. This post will mostly be about my own opinions for those who DM me, like, follow, or want to interact with me. This may get a little long winded, but the TL;DR is that as long as you aren't LGBTQ+ phobic, racist, or rude, we should get along fine. Don't be an asshole.

So you are a new blog, or have been on Tumblr for a while. You come across my page, you like it, and decide to follow it. Cool. The Tumblr app states that you should be +18 to be on the site, but my page is pretty PG-13 anyways, just in case. I get the notification, and I am going to want to know who is following me. This leads me back to your page. I will scroll down it, and if I like what I see, then I will follow back. And now we are mutuals. This may result in a varying amount of likes/reblogs from me. I don't tend to schedule or stagger, so you may get a lot if I deep dive your page. If this is a problem, just let me know. My page tends to be kinda random, but it is LGBTQ+ friendly and open to generally everyone. I tend to only go out of my way to block and report bots. I identify any page that follows me, but has no posts, likes, or reblogs as a bot, so if you are new, please post something so that I know that you are a person.

Since I am open to most people, this includes NSFW pages as well, but I might interact a bit differently. You get the same general vetting, but I am likely not going to reblog.... at least on this page. I have a sideblog devoted to NSFW. If you know, you know. Even then, since I don't want it getting nuked, the content I reblog will be rather tame, even though I may "like" quite a bit of the spicier content. Hey, I'm considering making another Tumblr blog to talk about my 'problematic' ships. Do you think it would be enough to just make a secondary blog or should I start a whole new separate account? I'd rather not deal with a separate account, bc I'd need to manage another email, but i might do it anyway. I was wondering what you/your followers opinions were on what is better?

I can help with this! So, for my more problematic ships, I created a whole other account. (I also created a separate ao3 account, but I'll stick to talking about Tumblr.)

Now, other anon, it depends on how secretive you want to be. I have a mutual who created a sideblog for their more problematic ships in our fandom. They'd made a name for themselves, mainly shipping/creating wholesome content, so while they've always been vocal about saying "ship and let ship", they got nervous about suddenly posting about their problematic ships/headcanons on main, so they made a sideblog.

Since it's a sideblog, their interactions with other blogs are a bit more limited, unless they want to "out" their main, which they did by accident. They made a post, another mutual replied, and then my mutual replied to that, forgetting that when you reply in the notes, it shows your main account url and icon, not your sideblog's url and icon.

From what I've seen, this hasn't caused any problems for them, but while our fandom has lots of anti-leaning people (a big blog in a server I'm in was complaining about proshippers being bad and too many people in the fandom making problematic content or "letting it slide", but that's a separate thing), most people in the fandom seem to go by "block, complain to friends in servers/group chats or make vague posts, and move on".

If the fandom you're (other anon) in has more vocal antis, you might want to make a whole other account, like I have. Now, in my case, the reason I made a completely separate account is that I've gotten stupid. I've gotten really personal on my main fandom blog, and things I've said can make it easy to doxx me. (Like, I wasn't giving out my legal name or anything, but someone with too much time on their hands could go through my personal posts (now deleted) and piece together enough to guess my general location or potentially find my old accounts on other social media, which could lead them to my (dead but not deleted, I think, unless Musk made good on deleting all unused accounts) twt, which has my deadname.)

I also plan on publishing at some point, which I've been open about on my fandom blog, often talking about my original content, not just my fandom stuff. After years of seeing how the anti mindset has infected authors on twitter, I've decided I DO NOT want my fandom persona and the pen name I'll be using when I publish to be connected. Especially when my main fandom is one of the "problematic" ones.

Having a separate account (the email I use is one I already had that I use for spam stuff, like online shopping/subscriptions/etc) makes it so I don't have to be as careful when it comes to sending asks or replying in posts, like my mutual I mentioned above. I'm also more vocal on my "secret account" about ships and other fandoms I've never mentioned on my main account, and the aesthetic is different, too.

Now, for me, I plan on not using my main account after a while and making my "secret account" my main one eventually. (Basically like Shippers Protection Program lmao) For me, privacy/secrecy was the biggest reason for me making a separate account. A side account leaves way too many chances for me to make a "whoops, wrong blog!" mistake when posting or reblogging. For my mutual, a sideblog is enough, since most mutuals they regularly interact with either ship the same problematic ships or support them shipping them, so they wanted to keep their secret blog open enough that their friends/mutuals could find them and talk about their ships.

Basically, my mutual just needed a separate room to feel safe talking about their ships. I needed to move into a whole new house to feel safe talking about my ships/interacting in fandom in general. It's all about what makes you feel safest. Good luck, and have fun!

Can you safely be into those immoral, taboo sexual fantasies? Sure. It's not easy. There's a lot that goes into kink safety, especially if it's something that extreme. But it can be done, if you have what it takes to properly separate fantasy from reality. Are there a lot of people online who clearly don't have what it takes? Absolutely, particularly a lot of people in online fandom spaces. Don't get into hardcore kink if you won't take it seriously.

Should there be a wider discussion about where, when, and how to post a lot of this "problematic" content? Yes. But we can't have that discussion if all you're doing is pointing fingers about "THE CHILDREN" though. Your solution to these problems shouldn't be "don't write stuff like that cause its immoral".

We get it, the fanfic characters aren't real. Guess who is? The original creators. They have a right to say "hey maybe don't make fetish content with my work". OCs exist for a reason. If something you're making is particularly extreme or taboo, stick to your own characters. Unless you have consent from the original creators.

If you're going to accuse someone of real-life wrongdoing (like pedophilia, or fetishization, or what have you), I expect you to have at least read the damn work yourself. If not, then I'm not taking your accusation seriously.

hahah yessss, this is one that has been consuming me to the point of blocking out scenes in a google doc lol

ok so, here's the scene. I wanted to do a typical casefic Drarry where Harry is an Auror, but Draco is a socialite. No wretched juice in this AU! I wanted the first part to be a typical reconnection of them at some third-party/friend-of-a-friend event where the only people they know are each other so they HAVE to interact. That or they both end up at the bar and whatever, they get to talking.

Anyway, who could predict that they hook up, and keep hooking up. To the point where the feels are starting to get caught and Harry has to ask himself if he's ready to admit he maybe-sorta-might be dating Draco Malfoy. The night he's all set to introduce Draco as his boyfriend to Ron/Hermione/etc. Draco never shows.

Harry is Upset. Sends him an owl, maybe gets a bit drunk in sadness, and mopes. The point of this, is that the weekend goes by, and Draco doesn't write back or contact him and Harry's pretty sure it's OVER. Until Monday morning comes around and he hears on the floor that the Malfoys are causing a ruckus in the DMLE office. Claiming their son never showed up for their weekly brunch, and no one has seen him for the past three days.

Ok, you ask. That's fine but I thought this WIP was called the Delphi Rescue Arc?? Calm down, I'm getting to that.

Allright, so Harry has to awkwardly insert himself into assisting on what is currently a maybe-missing wizard case. What convinces Harry to take it seriously (besides the fact his maybe-boyfriend is missing) is that Draco had been sharing with Harry that he had been looking his missing Uncle Rodolphus. I dunno if he would have revealed everything, but the idea is that after the battle of Hogwarts, the Lestrange brothers escaped from custody and no one knows where they went. Draco knows that they would have gone to the Manor, at least Rodolphus would have. Because the Malfoys would have been in custody and Delphi would have been by herself with just the house-elves caring for her!

By the time Narcissa was able to return to the Manor, Delphi and the Lestrange brothers were gone. She and Lucius have been searching for them, but have yet to find them.

To sum it up, Draco's gone, Harry's uncovering the secrets of Malfoy Manor and a potential missing heir of Slytherin. But the real hook for me, the raison d'être, if you will, is I wanted a casefic where Draco is missing and Harry has to work with Lucius to find him and Delphi. I don't know exactly how that part will happen but I have this scene in my head that really inspired this and has not let me go.

Harry and Lucius are captured and tied to pillars or something while Delphi is about to become a blood sacrifice to resurrect Voldemort or some nonsense. Draco, by this point, was able to get away due to Harry and Lucius' sacrifice with the explicit expectation he would get help. Harry's pretty bummed he's going to die in a Voldemort-related way again and probably cracks some joke to Lucius about how this is like old times.

Lucius: Quiet, Potter. I have the utmost faith in my son. We will be rescued by the Ministry's finest at any moment.

and that's all! I have about 60% outlined and an ending planned....it's definitely one that won't go away, even if no one is interested in reading a Lucius & Harry adventure lol.

I never directly attacked anyone in my time while pretending to be an anti. I was just completely silent on the matter, letting my morality complex and p.edophobia ocd wage war on my well-being.

It's ironic, I've been on this site since about 2010; and in 2012 when I started to be at my first most active point on tumblr and had a friend group on here, I would blog about Wincest (SPN) on main and no one said anything or thought anything of it, they just kept scrolling. That was the norm. People just SHIPPED whatever they wanted.

Flash ahead to like 2018 and suddenly everywhere I go there are now neon eyesore banners on posts, including fucking stimboards and whatnot with 'p.roship d.ni' and 'a.nti-a,ntis d.ni' ( I'm censoring that just so this post isn't blacklisted from proshippers because that is NOT my stance ) and I was like 'I don't even know what these terms MEAN?? where did these come from??' but I was too afraid to ask anyone so I just. Stayed silent and promised myself I'd only reblog "safe" content and that I was "happy" I'd "become a better person since then". ( spoiler: I was lying to myself. )

And over the years any time I made new friends who had never seen that content on my blog back then, I'd just say I didn't support Problematic Content(tm) and I'd only talk about and rp and reblog ships that were "normal", because I was now so afraid people would reject me at any time because it seemed like the anti crowd was so large and violent and nasty -- my mental health at that time would not have been able to handle that hatred.

-- in fact I had this SAME experience in the plural community with the a.nti-e.ndos for identifying as a median system. ( we know now that we are a bpdgenic osdd-1b system, but we still prefer most median terminology to describe ourselves. ) But the traumagenic DID systems who were pro-endo were so much more welcome to interacting with us than the exclusionists. And it's the same bullshit different flavor happening here with the proshippers.

How much overlap is there between a.nti-e.ndo and a.nti-p.roship rhetoric, I wonder? It's wild. I wish I had learned how to undo my black and white thinking so much sooner and listen to new points of view instead of just shying away from the unknown in fear.

But this is a new year, and this is a new me. This blog is going to be a source of love and positivity and learning about other people's experiences. Any discourse or negativity ( even the validating kind ) will remain on my sideblog. I don't have to like or even agree with everything I see online, but I am going to support people's right to say it, do it, make content of it, as long as all parties involved are consenting. ( Fictional characters, animated or live action, do not have the autonomy to consent or not consent so people can do anything they want with fiction that makes them feel happy and fulfilled, full stop. Yes, this includes RPF and selfshipping. As long as you keep your content in your safe space and no actors/musicians/etc involved in the creation of that character you're using are able to see it - I will support your right to make or consume any content as you see fit. )

re: silent readers, fan creators, motivation and interaction

Since I’ve been seeing a lot of posts about this lately, and have seen a fellow writer get hate for talking about it, I figured that it was about time to throw my hat into the metaphorical ring.

Interaction is a massive part of fandom as a whole because in the end we’re all just a bunch of nerds all obsessing over the same characters and media in our own little community. Like a nest of overly excited rats, or something equally strange. And interaction can come in many forms depending on which platform you’re using — and for this post I’ll be referring back to AO3 and Tumblr because that’s what I use.

On AO3 you have a few ways of interacting with an author whose content you enjoy — with some being anonymous and others being much more preferred and important to authors. Of course there are hits, which are encouraging of course but you have no way of knowing if someone clicked on and finished your fic or if they mis-clicked and immediately left; it’s completely ambiguous. Kudos and subscriptions are the other big ones and are a good form of encouragement for writers because they tell you who enjoyed your writing and give you an idea of who would want to return (even if subs are usually anonymous as well). Finally there are bookmarks and comments which are the best kinds of interactions to receive in terms of motivation because they can provide actual praise and feedback, telling a writer who enjoys your writing, what they enjoyed or where to improve.

I know that waking up to a flurry of comments makes my day more than checking on stats and seeing a couple more kudos — and it makes me more likely to continue writing for those fandoms.

And for posterity’s sake, here are my AO3 stats as of the 27th of February 2023 (for context I have 31 fics up at the moment):

22k of my word count came from fics posted over the last month that I got feedback for — which also account for 7 of my total comment threads.

Now let’s look at Tumblr — where your options for interactions are following a creator, leaving an ask, liking, reblogging or commenting on specific posts.

There isn’t a metric for tracking how many people have seen a post on Tumblr, obviously, so the closest thing we have are likes. And that is how I treat them — a track of who has and has not seen each thing I post — as opposed to a proper interaction. They’re nice, of course, but they’re sort of insignificant when you think about sharing content and such — especially when you get to bigger fandoms.

Asks are an amazing way to give feedback to a content creator as well as to send in requests if they accept them. That way even the more anxious of readers can participate and interact — which is great! But they tend to get clogged with demands, threats and hate if you leave anon on at the wrong moment — which I and other writers have experienced.

Reblogs and comments are probably the best way to motivate a writer — which I can absolutely corroborate. Even if you don’t think the post you liked will fit the theme of your blog, you’re welcome to create a sideblog just to reblog things you like. Nobody’s saying that it has to go on your main!

Now let’s look at all of that in real terms by comparing two of my side blogs: this one (@sleepingdeath-light) and my most recent (@sleepingdeath-bboys).

This blog (light) was started in 2021 and has 615 posts up as of now. I have 43,960 notes and write for 115 different fandoms. 2081 of you follow this blog and most of my interaction is through anonymous asks (over 200 right now) and likes with very few reblogs and even fewer that have any feedback with them (maybe 5 total off the top of my head).

My Baynton Boys blog was started at the end of January 2023 and has 49 posts up. i have 199 notes and write for 6 fandoms with a focus on characters played by a single actor (extremely niche). I still receive more likes than anything else but the margin is incredibly small as I also receive a large amount of tagged reblogs and requests from the other amazing writers in the fandom (@/jamiewintons and @/pink-booty-butts mainly, who you should defo follow if you’re interested in Mat Baynton content btw!).

I have written over 22k words and counting for the latter account because l feel so much more motivated and appreciated by the people I am writing for.

I have posted a few headcanon sets for this account in the same time period because I am massively lacking in the motivation to do anything else.

So in case you were ever up for debating it; interaction matters when it comes to any type of content creator. We’re not robots, we’re people giving you content for free — and it’s nice to know when people enjoy it. Like actually enjoyed it (especially if you were the one who requested it!).
