Don't know why I'm feeling so sappy but after watching "The Dragon Paradox," I kind of want to talk about some childhood memories I do remember.

For the longest time, I remembered being... alone. Different. I wasn't like my peers. In primary school, while most kids were running around in the courtyard or hanging out with their friends and such, I was alone. Well... not really alone since one of my relatives worked in the school so I usually go by them. But I usually just... draw. Draw dragons, dinosaurs, wolves, stuff like that.

If it's not drawing, it's reading. I love nonfiction books. Especially about animals, and nature. I vaguely remember this one book that had a picture of a clay stop-motion styled hadrosaur (An extremely outdated one to boot!) In one of the pages. An entire book on moths and butterflies. A book on dinosaurs. My entire early childhood was spent looking at animals, feeling an odd sense of kinship with them.

I never really fit in, especially in a culture like Trinidad and Tobago. There's this focus on loudness, in a sense. Carnival, limes, fetes, it's a culture focused on partying, yet... I never really understood that appeal. I hated loud noises, people scared me somewhat, even merely talking loudly could make me flinch. I... never really fit in.

This, coupled with the fact that I usually got along well with older family members and such, meant that my way of trying to fit in was to stamp out anything that I deemed "childish"; Bright colours, cartoons, stuff like those I tried to get rid of. Just so I could feel a sense of belonging to somewhere at least. But that backfired....

Spectacularly

I was still feeling rather alone. Even when I did get my first friend, I... didn't really feel connected. All I rambled about was The Last Guardian and I... I wasn't too sure if they were getting annoyed with me. So I still felt alone, made worst by the fact that this point was one of my lowest points in life.

Skipping to early high school, I was still alone, but managed to interact with people decently. I wasn't too sure on friends... but I did managed to make a few of them during the lockdowns. And for my stamping out of my "childish joy?"

Well... that didn't last.

I got into OCTAHEDRON, and started falling in love with things that are cringy again. Feeling genuinely in love with this game.

And then Worldless came along... and sparked me into feeling GENUINELY connected with others. Feeling like someone else understands what I went through; the alienation, feelings of difference, all of it. It feels like at least someone else finally understands the feeling of loneliness, even though you're surrounded by people who loves you.

And the funny thing is? Every. Single. Thing I was interested in is rather obscure.

Thylacines, Yi qi and Siats Meekorum. TY, Freedom Planet and Dust: an Elysian Tail. OCTAHEDRON and Worldless. Every single one of these things were rather obscure when I got into it. I still remembered how OCTAHEDRON basically made me get Tumblr in the first place, trying to find people who's into the game.

And I think, maybe I feel connected to the obscure because it's familiar. The feeling of loneliness and being an oddity. Being alone. It was like a mirror to my experience, being surrounded by people yet not feeling like any one of them considers you their friend. Being so, so alone despite being surrounded by others, others who don't think, talk or act the way you do, and not even understanding why. Why everyone feels alien, why you don't feel like you fit in anywhere.

This got a little long, so I'm ending it here. Thank you, thank you Mystic and Sqarlet and Hope and Peep and Tea and others, as well as my IRL friend group, for making me not feel alone. For showing me that hey, it's okay to be different. Thank you so, so much.

An Alternative to the Studio System?: Indie Animation Forges Ahead [Part 3]

continued from part 2. Split because Tumblr claimed there was an error in the post.

Just as exciting are the shows by Black creators. I've mentioned a few in this post already, including Creative Theory, Brandon Wright, Wisdom Nunn, Lucha Vandross, Nya, and Pia. For one, there's a 2D animated series named Jumbie, produced by a small studio in Trinidad and Tobago, GemGfx Animation Studios. Originally scheduled for release in February of this year, the Jumbie pilot was delayed to February 2023, because the studio was working on a music video for "A Better Tomorrow", a song by Mark Loquan, featuring Terri Lyons, which came out in April. With that, Jumbie is going forward.

Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs, my History Hermann blog, and Wayback Machine. This was the eleventh article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on July 15, 2022.

In addition, there is an animated hiphop musical entitled Battu, which is scheduled to become an animated series on Cartoon Network. The latter has also picked up a show drawing from Nigerian culture entitled Iyanu: Child of Wonder to be overseen by a Black-owned animation studio, Lion Forge Animation. Before Disney Branded Television was headed by Ayo Davis, a Black woman, it agreed to pick up Iwájú. The latter is an Africanfuturist series set in Lagos, Nigeria. Disney is co-producing it with Kugali Media, a Pan-African entertainment company.

There are many other Black indie creators. There's Vampire Nwt's suspense mystery show entitled Blackwater Creek. It has queer Afro-Latine leads named after magic, monsters, and fruits! Even more exciting is Captain Zero. It is an action drama about a social media-obsessed superhero named Captain Zero who "must find the cause of his depression-fueled blackouts in order to save his city and himself." The series is created by a Black non-binary illustrator, filmmaker, and writer, Lamard Cher-Aimé. It is produced by a Black-owned animation company, Cutting Edge Animation.

This animated series tackles "mental health in the Black community, identity," according to Cher-Aimé. Currently, five seasons, 4 specials, and a feature film for Captain Zero are planned. The show's GoFundMe states that with enough money it can turn the show into a reality. The show, and another produced by Cutting Edge Animation, Space Friends, are often promoted by Cher-Aimé. They often ask their followers to name show characters, and showcase series art and related merchandise. Interviews, Q&As, and more further pull in potential viewers on the show's YouTube channel.

Recently, a short five-minute film entitled "Captain Zero: Into The Abyss", funded in part by Chromatic Black's Ida B. Wells fund, aired. It stars the Black trans actress Angelica Ross, who is the film's executive producer. The film focuses on a therapy session of Xerxes Hughes, aka Captain Zero, with Dr. Niobe (voiced by Ross). It was posted on the show's YouTube channel. It is within a video that is about 1 hour, 50 minute video, complete with mental health professionals, Ross, Cher-Aimé, and others talked about the film, Black representation in animation and comics, mental health, and many other topics.

These series prove what Ashley Nichols said: that "anyone can tell an amazing story." It also seems to prove that people with vision and passion can make "god tier animation". Amazing animation doesn't always need a "studio behind it with a million dollars." There is no clear answer for making indie animation viable. After all, people can still steal content of an indie animation and profit off it.

Even so, some have supported waiting longer for series to come to fruition, giving those producing it more time to rest, polish their ideas, and make the shows better. Furthermore, there is no doubt that corporate media fails to represent many aspects of society, with indie animation making cooler content despite the need for funds. There are the continual challenges of people not taking animation seriously.

Unsurprisingly, there have been calls for a website for indie animated series which works like Webtoon. The Animation for Adults site proposed an awards show just for indie animation. Creator Nation promoted a Discord server for indie creators, indie animated shows, and indie comics. Some noted news of Netflix's war with its animation department by letting go many of its animation employees. Many creators responded sharing their series or pilots in the process. It has led more toward indie animation.

Creators have seen indie animation as the way to go. Some said that creators should do promos for other indie animations or said that now is the most important time to support, and follow, indie projects. This is coupled with the realization (and recognition) that those in the animation industry don't have stable jobs.

Then, there's Project City, created by Rad Sechrist, well-known as the showrunner of Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts. In February, I argued that Project City has "the potential to expand the indie animation space beyond...often crowdfunded series on YouTube". I stated that it allows for "more independence for creators in the series, movies, music, or shows they create." While it is amazing that Sechrist is funding, and creating, his next film (The Brave War), co-created with Andra Gunter and Daniel Rojas, independently, progress on the platform is somewhat slow.

There was lukewarm reception to his idea that people who buy shares in a project "have the right to make and sell merch" but have to "drop profits back into our system that distributes to all IP owners". Some about the potential use of NFTs, which Sechrist realized was a good point. He is strongly against NFTs and for good reason. Others called it "iffy", said the execution could be tricky, or worried it could set a bad precedent. On the other hand, there were those more receptive to Sechrist's idea.

Project City now emphasizes its role as an animation school, including 15-minute lectures on various topics, and is now defined as a "project based platform for learning how to create animation." Back in March, Sechrist said they are continuing with F-IP (fractional IP), where people could buy shares of an IP, but are not using Blockchain or NFT, and stated they would be launching it within the next month. That did not happen. The idea continues to be developed. A tweet from the project's account used the #FIP hashtag on June 24. But, there haven't been many more updates beyond that, as Sechrist last mentioned it in a tweet on January 7.

On the other hand, on June 18, Sechrist said that they have been wanting to take steps toward making Project City "a streaming platform of creators learning and sharing their process/knowledge." He added that Project City takes "no ownership of IP people post". Anyone can post and delete any video they have posted. In addition, he said they were considering allowing people to post 1 minute clips on the site. Ultimately, Project City may be part of what Avara describes, giving people a platform who wouldn't have it "in the traditional studio setting". More fundamentally, it is part of allowing creators to share stories on their own terms.

👆🏾👆🏾 This is my favourite new Soca song (thus far) for 2021... usually Trinidad’s Carnival celebrations would be fully underway by now with fêtes (large outdoor Soca parties with hundreds - and in some cases thousands - of people in attendance) happening every weekend. It all usually culminates in a giant street parade/party with literally the whole island (and thousands of people who flew in) taking part on the Monday and Tuesday right before Ash Wednesday (which would have been February 14th and 15th in 2021). Because of Covid, this year will be the first time in my lifetime that we haven’t been able to have any Carnival festivities 😭. As @soulsistrin said in her post, the “Carnival tabanca” is major right now... sigh. 😢

I was bored at like 4am the other night/morning and realised I somehow never watched Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s movie “Rampage” when it came out so I streamed it on Amazon... not bad tbh. Pretty what you’d expect from a movie starring The Rock in 2018 lol. It’s been sl long since I saw a GOOD, NEW movie though. 🤷🏾‍♂️ Wonder Woman 1984 was surprisingly disappointing, and Mulan was... alright at best. Oh wait, I really enjoyed Soul on Christmas Night, so there’s that. 👍🏾👍🏾 Marvel needs to just put Black Widow out and be done with it tbh.

👆🏾👆🏾 The Expanse and SVU are iconic at this point, IMHO - some of the best shows on TV periodt. Dr. Pimple Popper is my guilty pleasure (the pops are soooo satisfying lol). I have to say, I didn’t find the first episode of A Discovery Of Witches Season 2 as engaging as any of Season 1, but i’m invested so i’ll keep on watching and hopefully it improves. They just recast the lead in Batwoman so she’s a black woman now, and i’m here for the ride ✊🏾. And last, but by no means least at all - WandaVision has been great for the first two episodes! Can’t wait to watch episode 3, hopefully soon if my son would just get his ass over here so I can stop waiting and get my fix lol. 🙌🏾

Yoonmin Fandom Metrics

 Last month a survey was conducted to analyze the metrics of the Yoonmin fandom. Here are some of the responses:

Of these 903 responses, 826 of them (92%) of the respondents had selected that yoonmin are their only ship, their main ship or one of their main ships. This group is the one that will be focused on for the rest of this analysis. (Also was that one person lost? Did you get home okay?)

Of this focus group who mainly ship yoonmin, the bias distribution was:

Unsurprisingly, Min Yoongi and Park Jimin, the two individuals responsible for the YOON and the MIN in yoonmin, came out as the top two biases’. 

However, Min Yoongi, with a staggering count of 453 votes (55%) heavily outweighed all the other members, hereby proving that he was in fact not fucking around when he claimed “Sorry mom, your son’s too popular,” in his Mic Drop verse. 

As a follow up to these results, respondents provided their second bias (if any) to help the other members stand a chance against Rap God Min Yoongi. 

(He still took a whopping 23% of the votes). 

The most interesting part about these graphs is that it alludes to the fact that most yoonmin stans bias Yoongi (not Jimin, although he is obviously second in rank). This is probably due to the fact that of the “popular” bangtan ships, Jimin’s name comes up multiple times. Thus Jimin stans are more evenly split in who they ship Jimin with, but there are not that many “popular” Yoongi ships.

A little more detail on the focus group and how they came to stan bts and ship yoonmin is summarized in the following graphs.

BTS’ popularity has grown exponentially, with the greatest increase seen from 2014-2015 due to the release of their HYYH series. A parallel trend was observed in this analysis with the growth of the Yoonmin Fandom.

The next part of the survey focused on “Secondary Fan Creations” as Mr. Bang likes to call them. This includes but is not limited to: fan art, fan fiction, photo edits, video edits, blog posts, memes and so forth.

The results show that 99% of us are on Tumblr for the right reasons.

In terms of creating fan content, 31% of the respondents bless us on the daily with their contributions to the fandom. (Amen.) The rest of the majority enjoys and wishes to contribute to doing the lord’s work. 2% of the respondents who consider yoonmin their main or only ship do not create or want to create fan content because they think it is wrong (and that’s okay - to each their own). 

The next question was the most revealing and one of the most important to this analysis. Of the 861 responses, 640 voted that the reason they ship yoonmin is due to their relationship / interactions themselves. Only 2-4% of the respondents said they shipped yoonmin because of how they look together/aesthetics, fan content, external influences, or the availability of yoonmin materials in the fandom itself. This outright disproves the common (and tired) anti-yoonmin stan (and “rare pair” stan) claims that yoonmin is usually shipped for these reasons.  

Of the 30 respondents that chose “other” their reasons often eluded to specifics moments / interactions by yoonmin. Some of the more notable mentions are:

“They look like they understand each other’s struggles.“

“Their real and supportive friendship, they know each other's limits and share their vulnerabilities, so soft for each other, involve each other in the most intimate parts of their life.”

“Everything?? Idk they just vibe with me best, they're lovely and sift but also savage and have a really fun dynamic that i enjoy best.. they calm me when I’m upset as well which is like surprising bc I don’t calm down easily. +their soft moments like the earlier answer.” 

“Because Yoongi is so whipped for Jimin and they look at each other like they have galaxies in their eyes“ 

“They look like they are real / they act like they are married / they honestly seem like they’re in love.” 

“the way they are with each other in general. platonic or not, they love each other, care for each other a lot and it's nice to see. “

“From what I saw, it felt very real. Like yeah, I could get that super unbreakable bond with all of the BTS ships but for some reason, Yoonmin just stuck out for me and it felt really genuine and not just for fanservice.“ 

“Just...everything” (Many of you said this or voted for multiple categories from the above so everything x 10)

“You Know” (thank you Anonymous, I do know :’). 

There were so many other great ones yoonmin is such a soft ship with even softER STANS istg but I won’t post them all here but you can see them in this supporting post.

It is commonly believed that ALL yoonmin stans only ship them because of the “typical” subby bottom jimin/ dom top yoongi stereotype. The data below proves this is untrue - as 34% of respondents don’t care at all or like all dynamics equally, and 18% prefer a more balanced switch relationship dynamic. Combined, the votes for these categories make up over 50% of the responses, signifying that, no, not all yoonmin stans, in fact not even the majority of yoonmin stans, ship them for this reason. 

It should be noted though that, of the 48% of fans who expressed a preference for a specific relationship dynamic, 5% preferred top jimin and 43% preferred top yoongi (so yeah, top yoongi is more popular, but only to the minority group of the stans who actually have a specific dynamic preference).

Similar results were observed for which dynamics yoonmin stans feel are most realistic.

Apparently, the rapper's family and friends gave him a funeral in the guise of a last dance party.   ___________________________________________________ On March 18, the rapper was shot and killed at 24 years old. Weeks later, his deceased body was standing upright at a club farewell event, titled "The Last Show;” which reportedly had an admission fee of $40. While it stood as a celebration of life, the event caused hysteria online, leaving social media in awe, questioning if it was the rapper's actual body or a wax creation.  ___________________________________________________ In the viral clips, Goonew is seen wearing an Amiri hoodie, sneakers and jeans, with a crown on his head. David Bereaux exhaled with surprise when I told him where I knew him from. Right at the start of my career, I did a lot of PR work for the Royal Bank of Trinidad and Tobago with Sandra Bastien, who was the bank's PRO. Among those assignments was photographing Kaiso Royale, the staff calypso competition where I saw the young banker perform for the first time in 1981. "The first two times I placed second," Bereaux recalled with a broad smile. "The next two times, I won. That was it for me." For the last 30 years Bereaux has performed vintage calypsoes for special functions (for which he will sometimes compose subject-specific calypsoes on request) and at Wayo Dezeel, but his most enjoyable performances of vintage calypso came with the trilogy of calypso musicals written by Rawle Gibbons that remain the highlights of his career. "I did the last show of Sing de Chorus in 1991, it was my first professional engagement as a performer. Since then, everything has been special." Thirteen new calypsonians have been added to the portfolio along with one updated photo of a previously photographed calypsonian.
