I’m sort of flattered that people had such a strong reaction to this twist. When I originally came up with the concept I had a hard time piecing together the most important part. Thankfully a lot of guardian angels have been helping me whenever I get stuck, in ways that genuinely help the story flow better. It’s like having an editing team of heroes.

They’d probably give me credit, but I genuinely couldn’t have made the story as cohesive without them.

Point is, the artist’s girlfriend came about as a part of that. The story was initially more...I guess shallow than that, but it really helped piece things together in my head. Including things about the artist themselves.

Is he not allowed to have pets in his building or something? I don't see why he'd be screwed over the mess thing when his boyfriend offered to help clean.

I guess this is the downside to answering questions in long batches, but I guess by now it’s clear that Mikey didn’t want Donnie seeing what a mess his house was, especially after how smoothly Mikey had been operating the entire time. At least in his own mind.

If it was just a little dirty then it’d be no problem, but Mikey lived in squalor as far as he was concerned.

I could go into a long explanation about how some individuals handle the cycle of emotional abuse, but I’ll just leave it with the simple answer of ‘he’s likely in denial, or has given up’.

This Donnie has the patience of a saint, but to be fair he probably did consider it ‘over’ between them, but was more than willing to let Mikey explain himself. Hearing it was something so trivial, it was sort of endearing to him and he couldn’t stay mad.

Kitties!! I love how Mikey and Donnie has a fluff kinda start while Leo and Raph is the angsty start. Love that you stick with the main personalities. ....also love your work and enjoying this very much.

Comments like this are very flattering and relieving to me. I know I can hardly say I get their characterization ‘on point’, but depending on the AU I try to accentuate/focus on specific aspects of their personalities and magnify them, while also trying not to lose what makes them each unique. 

Alternate character interpretation and all that, but even these versions are somewhat different than I usually portray them, even if only a small bit (Leo being a little less abrasive than I usually portray him, Raph being overly shy, Mikey being very forward, Donnie being blunt and sometimes comedically awkward, etc.).
