viewer warning: this is the onboard footage, and audio, of george's last lap crash. it contains the crash itself, his panicked screaming for a red flag, and a helmet-facing shot of his eyes darting around frantically when he hears cars approaching.
this blog exists to be an archive and that's the only reason i'm posting this. please do not make light of any part of it, and watch/listen at your own risk.
It’s an absolute tragedy what happened to Dilano Van’ T Hoff in Spa, he was so young and it’s a terrible reminder of how dangerous motorsport is.
Saying that, race control shouldn’t have restarted that race. They restarted for one lap in very heavy rain with such a large grid of cars. That’s just dangerous and negligent. Race control for junior formulae seems far too lenient when it comes to safety in wet conditions.
i go absolutely feral when the fyp cooks up an edit of an athlete to the most insane song choice like i cannot express how many neurons started firing when this came up
for anyone curious, that freca race was under safety car for around 10 minutes after a minor incident and then the conditions (a lot of spray) and they restarted the race with less than 20 seconds remaining because they have the +1 lap rule, so it wouldn’t finish under sc. that kid was a few seconds under safety car away from still being with us right now, but they wanted a good show. in the rain. at spa.
they gambled with the lives of a big field of teenagers to put on a good show for a crowd of maybe a few hundred people who showed up to watch and a couple thousand viewers on youtube. not that it would have been better had the crowd been bigger, but just to really drive home the absurdity.
freca streams for free on youtube and the full race is still up on their channel. the crash is not shown at all - they show a minor incident right at the end and then the red flag being thrown, but don’t show or comment on what actually brought out the immediate red flag at all.
if we wanted to do discourse on motogp and catholicism at least we should do it the fun way

Pit debrief put out an article collating the drivers opinions on the Alonso Brake check incident (here)
Lewis being one of the only drivers sympathising with George’s fear, being concerned for him, and calling out Alonso’s behavior as unjustifiable where other drivers said George should have just expected it…
Hamilton added that he didn’t “understand” Alonso’s move, pointing out that Russell found himself in a precarious position as a result.
“The stewards obviously found a reason to penalise. If I try to put myself in Fernando’s position I can’t understand the manoeuvre, but I’m just glad that George is safe. It’s a frightening position to be in, in the middle of the track, with cars coming around at great speeds.”
It’s almost like the guy who’s had to deal with Alonso the longest, including being his teammate, might know exactly what he was trying to do.
