A sad scene for this one, unfortunatly where i live i tend to see a roadkill racoon here and there, and thus got inspired to show a racoon sacrificing itself for its child. In the beginning i also wanted to draw the speeding away car, but that made the entire scene too crowded and less intimate, which is why i left it out in the end :) -dairiem

(TW FOR HUMAN DEATH AND ROADKILL)

Today I want to talk about something that's been on my mind a lot lately: dealing with death and grief as an autistic person. It's something that can be incredibly difficult and overwhelming, and it's not often talked about in our community (At least as far as I'm aware.).

First of all, I want to say that everyone experiences grief differently, and there is no "right" way to feel or react to the death of somebody you know. But for lots of autistic people (including myself), there are some unique challenges that come with processing this kind of situation.

One of the things that can make grief even more difficult for autistic people is how some of us tend to experience emotions very intensely. This can make it hard to regulate our feelings and cope with the sense of loss that comes with somebody we care about dying. I personally have not dealt with this with this particular death, but a lot of people do, so I wanted to mention it.

One thing that can be helpful is to find ways to express our grief that feel safe and comfortable for us. Something that has been really helpful and comforting for me is doing activities in my Animal Crossing sticker and activity book.

The person who died for me is a teacher at my school, who I knew, so I've been doing a lot of my Animal Crossing activities at school because that is where I am affected by it the most.

I find that because I am autistic, I deal with and feel very differently about death than allistics, which makes me worry about being seen as disrespectful. I have been more distressed not about the death itself, but about how people around me react, because most of the people in my grade didn't know him, so they dont care very much. This has been very frustrating for me.

A few days ago I saw a dead deer on the road on my way to school, and I stared at it with interest because dead things are one of my special interests, it wasn't out of the ordinary for me. However, later I thought about it again and remembered that one interpretation of a dead deer in spirituality is a peaceful passing, so that was comforting to me.

Roadkill raccoon and an abandoned motel.

I unfortunately often see roadkill when i commute to work: the road is in the countryside with farmland on each side ad a lot of trucks go around day and night.

A few weeks ago i saw a dead hare on an overpass (God knows how it got there because it's a long bridge very high over a river). Usually when I see a dead animal on the road it disappears quickly, probably taken by other animals or just disposed of by farmers.

But since the place is not normal road and it woul be very dangerous to stop, the hare is still there today. It got run over again and again, picked quickly by ravens and magpies for days leaving only skin and bone. So now it's just an impression on the asphalt, a stain in the shape of a running hare.

It's there, forever running where it died.

I find it incredibly haunting.
