Jackunzel Month Day 25: High School AU

This is definitely one of my favourites :). I also wrote a one-shot to go with it under the cut. Not sure if I’ll expand it to a full fanfiction yet.

Rapunzel had written a list of goals for the new school year:

Finish the painting in time for Jack’s birthday

Convince the librarian to order new books

Get Jack to wear shoes during winter, or at least thick socks

Try not to miss class more than once a week

The list was written on the inside of the cover of her sketchbook. It was brand new; a present from Jack. She had already covered it with stickers.

It was a sunny day, and her braid thumped against her back as she biked down the street. She passed by kids with backpacks and bright eyes and adults leaning against bus stops smoking. She passed telephone poles with posters stapled to them advertising garage sales and missing kids. She passed by dogs waiting for their owners outside grocery stores and crows fighting over a spilled packet of fries.

When she pulled into school and parked her bike she was greeted with a cheerful “Hey Punzie!” as an arm wrapped around her shoulders. She smiled and kissed Jack on the cheek.

“Hey babe.” Her gaze swept down to his feet and she gasped. “Are you wearing shoes?!”

Jack sighed and shuffled his feet, which were inside a pair of bright yellow converse shoes.

“North bought them and made me put them on. Apparently I get a prize if I can go a month wearing them.”

Judging by his grimace, it was unlikely that he would be getting that prize.

Jack was a beautiful boy with snow-white hair and an aversion to footwear. People didn’t like him. Anyone who looked at him got the sense that there was something...off about what they were seeing. He looked normal, but he looked the furthest thing from it. His skin was too pale, his hands were too cold, and there was something about his eyes.

Rapunzel quite frankly loved the heck out of him, bizarreness and all.

The fifteen minutes before the bell rang were good. They held hands as they walked to their lockers and sat in the library where no one could bother them. But after the bell rang, they had to separate for class.

“See you at lunch,” Jack said.

“Yeah.”

Rapunzel sat down in her Math class. At first, it was okay. People were too preoccupied with catching up with their friends, asking about summer activities and plans for the weekend. Rapunzel was able to focus her attention on the lesson and questions the teacher gave them.

But as the day wore on, the staring started. The whispered comments. The hands shoving her in the hallway and feet trying to trip her. She ducked her head and grit her teeth as the clock ticked closer to noon.

By lunch, Jack was missing his shoes.

“You couldn’t even last the day?” Rapunzel asked.

“No! They’re awful, okay?! I threw them onto some power lines.”

“What about your socks?”

“They’re in my locker.”

She sighed and shook her head. “Y’know, part of pretending to be human includes pretending to be normal.”

“Too boring. Unrealistic. Probably thought up by pretentious old men.”

“Did you go to both your classes?”

“Yeah, yeah. I did.”

“Good.”

Jack was a smart guy, probably the smartest in the school. But that just meant he got so bored. Everything was too slow for him, too dull, not enough fun. Everything had to be fun for him. But they were in high school, so that wasn’t something they were going to find lots of. So, he acted out a lot and got detention. He skipped class when he got bored. North and Rapunzel were trying to keep him in class and out of trouble. Of course, Rapunzel had to try to do the same herself. While Jack skipped class because he was bored, Rapunzel skipped because she was too anxious to be around lots of people. She got in trouble because she read ahead or doodled on her tests and homework.

Yeah, high school sucked.

They found a quiet corner outside to sit and eat lunch. Jack’s daily supply of marshmallows was already half-gone, a sign he had started stress-eating already.

The shining light of the day for Rapunzel came after lunch: art class. The only good thing at high school, minus Jack and the library.

She could sit quietly in the corner and paint or draw and no one would bother her. She could doodle on her homework because that was the homework. The teacher didn’t scold her when she drifted off daydreaming.

Things didn’t stay so good after art class. During English she was able to spare a few minutes to draw in her new sketchbook. After a minute she could feel someone’s eyes on her. A quick look up confirmed it wasn’t the teacher. Rapunzel dropped her gaze back to her paper. She didn’t want to know which of her classmates was judging her this time.

The thing was, Rapunzel couldn’t understand her classmates, and they couldn’t understand her. She suspected this was due to being homeschooled for most of her life (boy it had been an uphill battle to get her mom to agree to a public high school). This resulted in a certain animosity, much like Jack and his being not human.

After class, three girls cornered Rapunzel in the hall and ripped up her sketchbook.

Jack found her huddled in the library, trying to tape it back together again.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “You just bought it for me and…”

“Don’t apologize, Punzie. For fuck’s sake, it’s those girls’ fault!” He wrapped his arm around her and kissed the top of her head. “Do you want me to go track them down?”

“No, don’t. Please. I’ll just...ignore them. I’ll be fine.”

Jack sighed. “Like always, huh?”

Rapunzel checked out some books to cheer herself up while Jack finished taping up the sketchbook. He held her hand as they walked outside.

“Do you need me to walk with you?” he asked. They lived in opposite directions of the school, and Rapunzel’s mom didn’t let her go out after school or bring friends over.

“No, I’ll be okay. And my mom would be upset.”

Jack made a face but didn’t argue. He kissed her and promised to text her later before he took off running. She smiled and unlocked her bike. Her backpack was heavy with homework and the books she’d checked out.

Unfortunately for her, she found that there had been an accident, and part of the road was closed off. The detour to her house meant she arrived home almost half an hour later than she meant to. Her mother was waiting for her. Her hands clutched at her greying dark hair and she glared at Rapunzel as she approached. She was absolutely furious.

“Do you know how long I have been waiting?!” she shouted. “Where have you been?! You could have been dead for all I knew! How could you worry me like that?! Why can’t you think of anyone but yourself?!”

“I’m sorry, mother. There was—”

“No respect! You have no respect for me! You never listen to me!” Rapunzel shrank back as her mother continued to shout. She waved her arms and jabbed her finger at Rapunzel’s chest. She criticized ever agreeing to her going to a public school. She criticized Jack, calling him a bad influence. Eventually she dragged Rapunzel inside and slammed the door behind her. Rapunzel held her breath and watched as she took a deep breath and smoothed her hair. Finally, in a calmer voice she said “Rapunzel, I’m trying to raise you as best I can! But you have to make an effort as well!”

“I know. I’m sorry. It won’t happen again, I promise.”

Her mother smiled and hugged her.

“I know you won’t, dear. But, I do have to ground you for this. Just to your room, and just for tonight. So that this won’t happen again.”

Rapunzel’s heart sank; she had been looking forward to eating supper with her mom and telling her about her day. But she understood and went obediently to her room.

After her mother brought her her supper, she got a text from Jack.

I lost my Fate/Grad Order account. I went t update my Bluestacks app to the newest one, didn’t get a transfer number, and have been fighting with support for the last month about it. I answered all of their questions but they said my information either didn’t match or they didn’t have enough to validate my ownership. It’s really dumb because one the thing they asked for was the transfer code. Why the f*ck would i have a transfer code, if i botched the transfer? I’ve played that game since it released here in the NA region. That’s actual years of my life invested, gone in a flash, because i couldn’t remember the name of my character. Sh*t is infuriating, especially when i have an Azur Lane account that can be bound to my Facebook and has a proper login function. Why the f*ck wouldn’t FGO have one of these systems? It’s been five f*cking years and they still use a transfer code system? Really? Anyway, that’s just me venting about the stupidity if gacha bullsh*t before i gush about the stupidity of gacha bullsh*t.

I play the sh*t out of Azur Lane. I’ve resolved to build the most substantial Iron Blood dock that i can. I just think they have the best aesthetic in the game, never mind the problematic Nazi origins. Prinz Eugen is literally the entire reason i started playing this game so, of course, i went full Deutsch with it. I’ve amassed a slid amount of ships under my Iron Blood banner, especially considering i started this game years after it was available for download in the NA. So far, i have forty-eight of the available fifty-six ships and i am thirsting real hard for the last eight. There are two, Zeppy and U-110, that i have no idea when I'll get a shot at once again, probably after their mini events are available in War Archives but the others are all Inverted Orthant ships. That’s right, all i have left are the goddamn ships from last year’s Iron Blood event and i am straight frothing at the bit for that rerun. Like, i f*cking NEED Strasser, man. Another Iron Blood Carrier for my ranks and a Super Rare at that? Bro, just Rerun that event already!

Last month’s Tower of Transcendence event was a boon for me. I was able to roll or unlock all of those ships, bolstering my ranks with a bunch of solid additions; One of which turned out to be an Ultra Rare. I don’t want to gush too much about her but Ulrich von Hutten is fast climbing the ranks of my favorite ships but i digress. I already word vomited about how well that event went for me. No, this essay is about how i was able to snatch up all of the ships, minus the aforementioned Orthant, Zeppy, and U-110, only a week later. That’s right, i went into last week missing Z28 because she’s a f*cking Orthant ship, Admiral Hipper Muse because i didn’t even attempt to roll for her during the Passionate Polaris event, and U-410 because i wasn’t active during the Lunar New Year event last year. Literally around the same time Orthant dropped. What’s changed? This last update. Polaris was added to the War Archives which made those Muse ships permanently available in Construction pool. You better believe i blew some more of my Wisdom Cube load to get Hipper Muse. In the process, i unlocked all the other ships for that event, too but Hipper was the true prize. If that wasn’t enough, both the Lunar New Year and Spring Festival Training got a rerun and i was able to unlock both Z28 and U-410; Two ships i figured I'd have no shot at, like Zeppy. Admittedly, i still have the daily unlock thing to do in order to officially add U-410 to my dock but i already have well over the requisite two hundred points, so it’s only a matter of time before she is mine.

It’s incredibly sh*tty i lost my FGO account but, as if it were divine consolation, i was ale to shore up my Iron Blood dock pretty substantially. And unlike FGO, this account is bound to my Facebook account so i don’t have to worry about getting boned whenever buy myself a new phone. It’s kind of surreal to know i am jut a handful of events away from collecting every available Iron Blood ship. All that’s really left to do is max out the affections, skills, and what not, for every ship available in my dock. I want the perfect Iron Blood fleet and i am well on my way to achieving just that. Hell, I've even vowed with half of them so far. I know this makes me sound like a whale or whatever but I'm not. I literally, purposely, missed events to accumulate the necessary resources to make a proper run at this game. I even stopped playing for years in order to balance my drive to accomplish my lofty goal and the amount of time i was sinking into this game. I’ve just been very fortunate with their gacha and hope i can maintain this level of luck when ever they rerun that Orthant event. F*cking rerun Orthant already, goddamn!

Three Point Perspective: Arctic Monkeys Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino

The long-awaited Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino graced us with its epic release last Friday. Without a single released prior to the Monkey’s first San Diego show at The Observatory North Park since AM’s 2013 release, fans were left with the question of what the new era would sound like. With Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino finally being released, there are several themes that are spread throughout the tracks such as the importance of cell phones in modern society, and the effects of fame. ‘Star Treatment’ kicks off the album with Alex reflecting on his past times before the fame. Followed by ‘One Point Perspective’, a much darker track which seems to involve questioning fame once again and how it affects the band. Both ‘American Sports’ and ‘The Ultracheese’ from the very first second consist of Johnny Cash and Bowie’s spacey vibes. There’s no surprise that the band decided to incorporate a tad of Bowie in their new album after The Last Shadow Puppets decided to cover Bowie’s ‘Moonage Daydream’ during their Everything You’ve Come To Expect tour. The title track and ‘Science Fiction’ are lyrically the most creative listens. With lines such as, “Jesus in the day spa, filling out the information form’, and “Reflections in the silver screen of strange societies, swamp monster with a hard-on for connectivity”, reminding me of how much more lyrically impressive Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino is compared to AM. The transition specifically between ‘Golden Trunks’ and what seems to be most fan’s favoured track ‘Four Out of Five’ is a definite pick me up from ‘Golden Trunks’ dark political lines, “Bendable figures with a fresh new pack of lies” and a person’s blind devotion ‘“When true love takes a grip, it leaves you without a choice”. When the album’s titles were released ‘The World's First Ever Monster Truck Front Flip’ intrigued most. Assuming that there will be a heavy guitar riff or a similar AM ‘R U Mine?’ sound from the ‘roughness’ of the title was the complete opposite. What ‘The World's First Ever Monster Truck Front Flip’ brings is the most Suck It and See throwback feelings. The chorus throughout ‘She Looks Like Fun’ being the most intriguing with Alex referring to modern society scrolling through their Instagram feeds, “Good morning/Cheeseburger/Snowboarding”. ‘Batphone’ continues this theme of technology and how individuals aren’t living in ‘the reality’. Overall, it seems that opinions have been split from fans of AM’s 2013 era, but I personally am completely lyrically blown away from Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino’s entirety. It’s almost like a continuation of Everything You’ve Come To Expect with similar sounds of ‘The Bourne Identity’ and ‘Aviation’, but minus Miles. With new the additions of the piano, and synthesizers I believe that they have enhanced the new direction that the Monkey’s have stepped toward and I already can’t wait for what they’ll decide to make next.

Four out of five stars on Arctic Monkeys’ comeback ‘Tranquillity Base Hotel and Casino’

After five years of silence, the Arctic Monkeys make their much-awaited return with surprising and hypnotic ‘Tranquillity Base Hotel and Casino’. Perfectly managing to avoid self-parody or stylistic repetitions, this new album appears as a startling reinvention, a meandering and puzzling journey beyond known territories. Just like mankind first set foot on the moon on the ‘Tranquillity base’ site, the Arctic Monkeys disembark in an unknown universe in which they reveal a new, unexpected aspect of themselves.

It would be difficult to distinguish a single in this album: unlike 2013 structured indie rock success ‘AM’, ‘Tranquillity Base Hotel and Casino’ appears as a puzzle, a tangled enigma with no apparent solution, the value of which precisely resides in this sophisticated lack of clarity. As the album opens with the bewitching track ‘Star Treatment’, one is confounded in disorientation, before eventually letting the album settle a logic of its own. Some songs appear nearly unconstructed, yet simultaneously refined and complex, echoing the way in which the lyrics present a dense yet also elliptic unique form of prose, like a stream of consciousness, melodically unfolding itself. Turner’s deep and captivating voice strongly reminds of Gainsbourg’s early 70s half-spoken verses, sometimes erudite and poetic, sometimes full of derision, such as on the opening line of the album: ‘I just wanted to be one of the Strokes’. A sense of irony, or at least of strong self-awareness emerges throughout the tracks of the album, reflecting a conscious decision to move away from an older musical style that it would make no sense to replicate, in order to engage in a necessary and well-executed new path.

‘Tranquillity Base Hotel & Casino’ however seems to reflect Turner’s personal evolution more than it presents a real fruition of the Arctic Monkeys as a band, and the instrumentals, although displaying intense and elegant arrangements, create a harmonious echo to the vocals rather than they truly establish the band’s presence. The addition of the piano accompanying Turner’s reflective vocals partially replaces Helder’s vibrant drums that helped define the band’s early albums and marks a notable shift, both asserting a form of musical maturity, and avowing the forfeiture of a constitutive element of the band’s sound. ‘Tranquillity base hotel & casino’ seems to retain a sense of continuity with Turner’s side project The Last Shadow Puppets, and particularly of their 2016 album ‘Everything You’ve Come to Expect’, although it appears to be more intricate and subtle in many of its aspects. Final song ‘Ultracheese’ captures the best this album has to offer, presenting a rich and magnetic journey in this captivating new universe.

Despite its obviously divisive aspects, this album undeniably presents an extremely successfully crafted creation, a melodic and truly bewitching masterpiece. ‘Tranquillity Base Hotel & Casino’ reflects the Arctic Monkeys’ ability to transcend genres and provide their audience with impressive yet always effective transformations.

The year is 2018 and the Arctic Monkeys have returned. To celebrate their return, they’ve given us their sixth record, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. And yes, though it’s 2018, this album feels like it belongs right in between vinyl copies of the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds and David Bowie record. With this record, one has to remember this album isn’t the sequel to AM, nor it should it be viewed as its heir. This is a record that’s beyond its years that also dwells in the time before it, and it’s more conceptual than full story sometimes- nonetheless it’s still a record.

The album starts with ‘Star Treatment,’ a glittering Bowie-esque opening that’s chock full of jazz tones, vocal effects, and piano. Here, Alex Turner plays the reflective celebrity, singing in whispery echoed tones about how he wishes he was one of the Strokes, or just someone unforgettable. Peppered with pop culture references and metaphor, ‘Star Treatment’ is sultry and mysterious, as if Turner’s singing in dim light surrounded by fog and old-school movie lights.

After ‘Star Treatment’ is ‘One Point Perspective,’ has an opening much like the opening piano notes of Panic! At the Disco’s ‘Nine in the Afternoon,’ but has a much different mood than the aforementioned. This song instrumentally blends classical elements with lounge music and is reflective like the blues as Turner, or at least the song’s character laments former dreams and youthful aspirations. The music helps fill in the gaps on this track a great deal, as there are a number of instrumental breaks. The album then abruptly shifts into the spoken-word like ‘American Sports,’ is a veiled commentary on the similarities and differences between the fictional society described in the album and present-day- “Breaking news, they take the truth and make it fluid…A montage of the latest ancient ruins/Soundtracked by a chorus of "You don't know what you're doing"”.

The album’s title track is woozy and moody, and Turner uses his voice and volume to make for an interesting narration to the story presented in the song. He gives us a slightly morose and faraway idea of what exactly we’re supposed to visualize- as if we’re staring at Earth right from this supposed lunar resort’s call center. But Turner paints life there is not all that it’s what it’s cracked up to be as he sings, “And do you celebrate your dark side/Then wish you'd never left the house? /Have you ever spent a generation trying to figure that one out?”. ‘Golden Trunks,’ is possibly unintentional political commentary, but besides that, much like the rest of the album, it uses metaphor and lyric to graze pointed satire and musings about society, which is a prevalent theme on the album. It’s as if perpetually being in this world that Turner’s created moves one to think more and open up as well, considering this is the closest thing we have to a love song on this album.

Next is ‘Four Out of Five,’ which possibly wins the prize for fan favorite. ‘Four Out of Five’ is the grounding track, the one that sounds the most like the quintessential Arctic Monkeys we’re familiar with since the song is the perfect balance of mysterious but quotable lyrics, a catchy bassline, and an outro that drives one to hit the replay button. Lyrically, the song further explains the concept of Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino, while also leaving fans to wonder the intricacies of an information-action ratio, the idea that we have a myriad of information that we’ve no idea how to deal with. ‘The World’s First Ever Monster Truck Front Flip’ discusses the instantaneous nature of technology and Turner wonders if its effects are positive or not- and yes, the title of the song was somehow wonderfully in the lyrics, which is a feat all on its own. ‘Science Fiction’ asks for a lasting impression that might be temporary- “So I tried to write a song to make you blush/But I’ve a feeling that the whole thing/May well just end up too clever for its own good/The way some science fiction does”. ‘She Looks Like Fun’ is the most lyrically confusing yet genius track on the record, with a chorus so bizarre it almost makes sense, but doesn’t. The album closes with ‘The Ultracheese,’ a piano-heavy track that brings the album back to where it started- a reflection upon what’s been gained, lost, and blurred through celebrity and life in general. It’s a beautiful, downtempo ballad between a man, his mind, and his piano that provides a clearer close to a record that’s quite interesting.

With ‘Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino,’ Alex Turner and Co. are not here to make lovely ballads. If the Arctic Monkeys have been christened as indie-rock gods, then these gods are acting in their sovereignty to do as they please, not to save what’s in need to be saved. This is the Arctic Monkeys at their most honest, and even if this honesty is befuddling lyrically, it’s still honesty displayed in its most semi-autobiographical form.

Not?? Really. She has routines but those generally take way longer than what’s considered a ritual I think so.

Honestly?? Everyone she considers a friend is a best friend usually since it takes so much for her to actually think she’s someone’s friend. Enemies are like...super hard for her to purposefully make or adknowledge? Since self hate is that bad and if someone tried to kill her she’d say it was an accident and everyone makes mistakes...Like the few times she does it’s when people hurt the people she cares about?? like not just oh u don’t get along no I mean you actually screw up big time and show no remorse for it and basically cause trauma but even then she sticks more to protecting the person than going to confront things that can make the person treat her friends worse.

Concept of home and family?

It’s......bad, like in terms of it being warped since she was the tender age of 0. Like she saw it more like an obligation you’re born into??? Like you can’t change your family, your home is where they usually reside or at least gather every once in awhile. It’s bound by blood and you’re obligated to love them even if they’re literally the worst fucking dad of the entire millenia.

It definitely improved over the years tho like home is where the heart is and all that but mostly like the biggest thing is that blood means jack SHIT in terms of family if they (shitdad) treats you badly. Honestly??? Honestly staying with Justin for as long as they did. They want to know when things started to go bad so they could have just left him instead of literally having to leave their body and their life. Mostly because YEAH being abused and manipulated to the point u gotta fake ur own death is terrible but in a way it still feels like he won? Like they’re the one who left, they’re the one who doesn’t have a life anymore, almost no family to speak of and living in constant fear of him finding them. OKAY SO idk if you know but I run a shinji headcanons blog that I’ve sorta abandoned mostly because life kinda got in the way, but I’ve been thinking of revamping it and posting daily with some stuff liiikkkeee:

cold!shinji is my biggest one bc of the strega drugs I mentioned earlier. hes constantly cold (hence wearing the big ass peacoat and boots all the time) and tries to eat as much as he can but the drugs zap all his energy so he’s constantly tired and grumpy but has the best intentions. he tries.

he also sleeps a lot in weird places and sometimes minako gets aki to help her move him to the couch and they tuck him in together and giggle. he goes in between being a heavy and light sleeper, sometimes he just pretends to be asleep and humors the two of them because he secretly wants to be taken care of sometimes instead of being the mother hen

I’m sure he knows basic sewing skills from having to fix miki’s dolls and teddy bears all the time so he sews up everyone’s uniforms after they get home from tartarus so no one will notice

he and mitsuru are actually a lot closer than anyone realizes and he confides in her a lot especially over aki bc the two of them worry more than akihiko will ever know SO by talking to each other aki will be oblivious and they can be den mothers together

minako is sometimes obnoxiously energetic (hence why junpei had issues with her in the beginning) but that’s because she’s already seen so much death she figures life’s too short to be sad and grumpy, which is why she clings to shinji bc she sees the kindness in him and tries her best to bring out his light

(this one isn’t shinji-centric but) I love the idea of minako and junpei being best friends. like the closest friends out of the whole group minus shinji and aki. I really loved their relationship in p3p and think that they would bring out the best in each other, especially their silliness. I imagine them going to photo booths together and cleaning out the arcade of rare prizes, hitting batting cages and being really competitive at sports during the summer. they share ice creams and talk about boys and girls and try to set each other up with people (before chidori and shinji come into play) and when they find them they’re super supportive of one another and can gush over them all the time while the rest of the team just rolls their eyes.

also minako has a GIANT Jack Frost doll collection and it wouldn’t surprise everyone at SEES if she got a world record for it

Klaus, Steven, K.K, and Abrams I can all see as teachers at lets say… Hellsalem’s High lmao (wow very creative there gwyn)

I can see Leo, Zapp and Chain as students, but I can also see Zapp or Chain as teachers too aha

Either way Chain and Zapp still wouldn’t have a good relationship lmao. As students I bet they’re also trying to outdo the other in grades. Chain mostly wins aha

I can see Zapp probably showing off his good test grade and Chain just holding up hers, which is like a few points higher than Zapp’s haha

Gilbert is the pure janitor and also part time teacher at the school as well, probably teaching one of the extra curricular activities. Most students think he’s a really calm person b/c of his demeanor but if he ever catches anyone going off campus without permission or anything people will know not to mess with him lmao

Maybe Doug and Deldro would be extra curricular teachers or maybe they’re just students who happen to be in every class together for some reason lol

Klaus would be teaching biology or if there was an agricultural class, then maybe that.

He’d be the supervisor of the gardening club at school!

His students would find him a bit intimidating at first, and none would dare try anything to make him angry. Soon they actually see that he’s just a nice guy, but they don’t try any pranks to provoke him at all since they don’t want to risk it lmao

His classroom would be have multiple plants inside, all of them being real. Once in a while a some of the flowers bloom, especially during spring. Everyone helps out with watering the plants, and I feel like most will be pretty amazed when the flowers bloom for the first time

Is always there to help any of his students with homework or studying, and overall he’s a great tutor to any student

If he ever does a test review the day before the test in a jepardy style, he’ll award the winner some candy and like 5 bonus points on the test

Steven would be teaching chemistry, and other science subjects as well

Steven is a pretty chill teacher, but he’d be a bit strict as well. In a good way though

If he were to teach astrology though… oh boy man. So many puns on his last name lmao. I can also see him teaching history as well

Is also that one attractive teacher in the entire school

He’d be a pretty supportive teacher as well too, encouraging his students to do well and not cheat (puts emphasis on that last part)

Every year Steven gets this one student who doesn’t listen at all, as in being troublemaker and not listening to him when he’s speaking. Would calmly ask the student to listen to him, or face the consequences. And he does this pretty scarily, mostly scaring everyone into submission and everyone knowing that they shouldn’t mess with him or else something would happen

If any of his students try to cheat or anything, he knows. He’s got a good eye, so any students caught cheating are pretty much dead

“nobody stares at their leg for 10 minutes straight okay-”

I imagine if he had a troublesome or snarky student in class, he’ll just sigh, walk up, talk to them, and then give them extra homework or something to work on because of their attitude

Sometimes Steven just might be so tired by the end of the day that his last class will be lucky to have the last 30 minutes or so free, so they’ll have time to do homework. Steven just sleeps and relaxes during that time

Kahoot is a battlefield, with Steven giving first place winner 10 or 5 bonus points on a test. However, the questions on it are hard, so it makes the competition even more intense, with everyone studying before the day kahoot is going to be done

Okay but like if Steven had an observer in the room one day, he’ll pretty much be giving everyone this look like he did in the ova saying “don’t be rude don’t be rude-” Observer is probably impressed by how well Steven teaches and how everyone behaves aha

K.K might be a history teacher, since I have the feeling she’ll hate doing literature or English. I can also see her being an extra curricular teacher and teaching p.e or being the coach of a sports team for the school

That one teacher who if you ask about her son(s) she’ll just talk on and on about her kids aha

Will be a good teacher, but then she’ll be a kind of good strict (and also a bit of a scary) teacher

Nobody wants to deal with K.K when she’s angry, or especially if she’s angry at the whole class (minus the ones who always do what they’re supposed to)

She’ll be a pretty fun teacher as well too, letting her students do whatever they want when they’re done with work and allowing them to play games like jeopardy and kahoot

As the coach of her sports team she always make sure that her students are up and ready, and makes it clear that the team isn’t just for standing around, its also for fun and winning lol

Abrams is the pretty eccentric teacher in school, and pretty much everyone enjoys his classes. I feel like he’d be a pretty cool history teacher aha

Over the summer Abrams would maybe go somewhere like a different country each year, and slowly over time he attains many different trinkets and all to show off to his classes. Sometimes he’ll joke around and say one of the things he got is cursed or whatever (no one knows if he’s joking or not since he actually looks like he’s serious though lmao

Abrams would probably have one of the most fun classes, with all sorts of activities and Abrams telling some stories from his travels. Most students are amazed at most of them, with Abrams mostly exaggerating a bit haha

Leonardo is a good student, getting good grades and all. He’d be trying hard to get good grades and is pretty much one of the good students in the classroom

Zapp is his somehow friend when he enters high school, and he wonders why he’s even friends with him sometimes. Sometimes Leo has to tutor him on how to do somethings in a specific subject

Zapp might get into a few fights in school, but there won’t be many. Most of the time its just the other person being a jerk and him getting irritated

Realistically, he hates to drive. When he gets back to Earth he moves to the city where he can take buses or the subway everywhere. When he did have a car, he had a gray Typical Texas Truck (TM) named Gerty. It had 20 bumper stickers, including one that said “My other car is a Battlestar”

Minkowski

Has the ugliest, least cool minivan the group has collectively ever seen. It’s some European brand no one else has ever heard of, tricked out with an ungodly amount of safety features. Demands everyone wears their seatbelts at all times. All her CDs are original Broadway cast recordings and every road trip becomes a sing-a-long extravaganza

Hilbert

Doesn’t really see the appeal of driving. When all he does is go from the lab to his nearby apartment, he just sees walking as easier and more time and cost effective. He has his licence, but hasn’t gotten it renewed in thirty years. A terrible driver with no regard for traffic laws

(If she was human) Would be the EXTREMELY proud owner of a tiny little convertible she bought at a junk yard for $200 and got spruced up. It’s bright pink. An incredibly badass driver who awes everyone else. Every car she’s ever owned has been sleek and black, and she takes very good care of them. Traffic doesn’t faze her in the slightest. She’s always pulling U-turns and it lowkey freaks her passengers out but she’s never gotten into an accident. Double parks, though, so points off for that

Kepler

Has gotten into SO MANY accidents over the course of his SI-5 career. He’s probably crashed at least 6 cars but is super nonchalant about it. “So then I flip off the highway, and the car is spinning, but all I’m thinking about is who it was that stole the file...” The others are terrified. He owns an oldsmobile named Alexandria that, surprisingly, doesn’t have one scratch. He loves it

Owns a ‘64 mustang, light blue, and it is his baby. His one and only. His prized possession. He doesn’t even let Kepler drive it. In fact, no one has seen him drive it either. He doesn’t have a name for it because no name can “capture its majesty.” The others (minus Kepler) are pretty sure he’d crash a car if he drove, but he’s actually not that bad

Character Name, age, pronouns and house:

M A R Y / M A R I A ;; her name is biblical and means sea of bitterness, rebellion and wished for child. These fit Mary quite well: while she tries hard not to be a cynic, a bitterness sits inside her and makes her look at the world with a dark look; she’s filled with determination to do what is right and to stand up against those who are in her eyes wrong, and she is thus rebellious (she also grew up pranking her sister and brothers quite a lot), and Mary waswished for, as her parents are nothing but loving.

The Mary/Maria thing is, I think, a confusing one and I will clear that up right away: Mary’s mother is Puerto Rican and her father is Scottish, and when she was born they could not quitedecide if they wanted to name their first daughter the English or Spanish name of Mary/Maria. Her birth certificate says Mary, and it’s the name she goes by at Hogwarts, but to her mother and extended maternal family, she has always been Maria. As she’s proud of her Puerto Rican roots, Mary doesn’t keep quiet with this, and loves the fact that she kind of has twonames.

A G A T H A ;; this name was picked because of the famous writer Agatha Christie, whose books Mary’s parents loved deeply. It means good woman, which I do truly think Mary is, despite her faults and flaws.

M A C D O N A L D ;; a Scottish surname of a proud family that lives in the Scottish highlands. A long line of farmers, they’re hardworking and no-nonsense, but have great love and respect in their heart. Mary loves her name, except for the fact that a lot of people tended to sing Old MacDonald whenever they saw her or her siblings in town: it simply grew annoying.

What is their patronus? Why does this fit your character?

The P H O E N I X is a creature that’s constantly reborn, that constantly rises from its ashes. One of my most important themes for Mary is that she always gets up. Always. Whatever might knock her down, whatever might make her feel more lost than anything, she gets back up. I feel like this fits in with the Phoenix beautifully ( and while I feel a little guilty using a ‘rare’ patronus, I cannot help but love this one so much for her ).

Phoenixes are also creatures that are associated to fire a lot and while Mary had quite the fear of fire as a child, she is firehearted. She’s warm and compassionate and inflammatory and spirited. She’s someone who can burn entire empire and walk over its ashes as well as give warmth to those who need it ( she will usually pick the latter, but in the future she has no trouble fighting back with gritted teeth ).

This bird also doesn’t die, and Mary is ( in canon ) the only one of our beautiful trinity who comes out of the war physically & mentally healthy, unlike Lily, who dies and Alice, who loses her mind. Many others she loves die too, and to her it will more than often feel like a burden than a gift; for what is life without your loved ones there by your side?

The Chinese Phoenix is also thought of as a gentle creature, and while Mary has her rough edges and dark sides, I do believe she is gentle in her core. With her friends, she’s warm and loving and barely ever brash, and with strangers she will hardly be rude unless they give her reason to be.

In Chinese culture, when a house was decorated with a Phoenix, this meant the people living there were loyal and honest. Mary is loyal to her very core and could never be moved to betray those she love; she would die, if she could keep them safe. As she’s not a good liar, Mary’s also honest; she’s not always happy about this fact, as it doesn’t always benefit her, but it does make her an outspoken individual.

What is their wand and their wand core? Why does this fit your character?

Sycamore, Dragon Heart String, 12 ½ inches, reasonably supple.

The sycamore makes a questing wand, eager for new experience and losing brilliance if engaged in mundane activities. It is a quirk of these handsome wands that they may combust if allowed to become ‘bored,’ and many witches and wizards, settling down into middle age, are disconcerted to find their trusty wand bursting into flame in their hand as they ask it, one more time, to fetch their slippers. As may be deduced, the sycamore’s ideal owner is curious, vital and adventurous, and when paired with such an owner, it demonstrates a capacity to learn and adapt that earns it a rightful place among the world’s most highly-prized wand woods.

I think this fits Mary quite well; she gets restless when there is nothing to do and doesn’t feel inspired when she’s doing something that doesn’t interest her. Mary, even though her spirit is somewhat damaged at the moment, is a vivacious being, someone who does not do anything half-heartedly.

I chose the Dragon Heartstring, mostly because I really didn’t think a Unicorn Hair core would fit; Mary would, even though she hates it, dabble in some darker spells if it could save lives. I also didn’t think the Phoenix feather core fit as well as the Dragon one did. Dragon Heartstring cores fit fast learners, and Mary definitely is that. The wand is also temperamental, and so is Mary.

What is a song lyric that represents your character?

i’d rather be spitting blood // than have this silence fuck me up (…) i’d rather have broken bones // than feel myself turn to stone ( troye sivan, the quiet. )

How would your character react if they saw an older student bullying a first year Muggleborn?

First, Mary would understand; she has been in that situation more than often, has seen her best friend Lily end up in that situation ( even having been bullied by someone who called her a friend ) and knows what it is like. She knows how it makes your skin crawl with a feeling of powerlessness; how useless the anger you feel usually is, as these pureblood elitists will not change their mind because of you; she knows how somewhere, even though you may not like it, there is also fear sneaking in the back of your mind, because this is what a great part of the wizarding community thinks.

Secondly, there would be anger. Because of her understanding of the situation – better than most, considering last year – she will feel an outrage, because this shouldn’t be happening. Bullying in the first place is something that makes her feel nauseous, but when it’s based on something like this, it also causes a rage. She will use this to speak up, to show the older student that this not okay: because Mary will never sit idly by and watch injustice happen under her nose. She’ll snap and her words will be cutting and her eyes will be narrowed. Fear will not be present, not when there is something to be done.

Lastly, there would be comfort. Once the older student vanishes ( which, hopefully, is sooner rather than later ) she will look after the younger student her brothers do for her with soothing words and a few promises she cannot keep. Mary is compassionate and warm, and while it could become a weakness, it is a strength at present time: it makes her stand up to injustice and look after those who need it.

Is you character a virgin? How do they view sex? What’s their sexuality? Does their gender align to their canon gender?

Mary is not a virgin. She lost her virginity just before Christmas break last school year at the age of sixteen to someone who did not mean too much to her in that way: they were both a bit more than tipsy, both attracted to each other and both filled with the energy that had been pulsing through the party. It was no bad experience; Mary doesn’t feel regret about not losing her virginity to someone who meant a little more to her, as in her eyes it’s not a big deal.

Even though Mary was raised Christian and is still religious, her thoughts on sex do not really fit her upbringing: she feels no need to wait for marriage and doesn’t think sex should just be between two people. No, Mary thinks sex is something that people should simply do if they want to, and not do if they don’t want to. She, herself, has not yet has sex with someone sheloved, and this is something that doesn’t bother her at all: she is, after all, young, and she’s having fun.

Her sexuality is something she did struggle a little more with than sex in general. Mary is bisexual, and this is something that wasn’t much of a surprise to her, but it did take a while for her to figure it out. Mary was confused about liking girls for a few years, was not sure how shecould, as she liked boys as well. She knew some girls liked girls and she was okay with that, but she felt like that wasn’t just the case for her. Eventually she came across the termbisexual, and a weight seemed to roll off her shoulders when she did. Mary took the label and applied it upon herself, coming out to her friends with a slight nonchalance but a relieved grin still on her lips. She hasn’t told her family yet and knows she won’t until she really has to. With all the things going on around her, she doesn’t wish to deal with the potential reaction her parents might have.

Still, there is no shame surrounding her sexuality. Mary might not have come out to her parents, but she is not necessarily quiet about her sexuality to her friends and other schoolmates. She takes pride in it, actually —– Mary might be an insecure person, but she does take pride in the ways she can identify. She’s proudly half-latina, she’s proudly muggleborn and she’s proudly bisexual.

Mary identifies as a woman and has never questioned her gender much. She’s got sides that are very traditionally feminine and sides that are more traditionally masculine, and she won’t let people judge her for either of those. She can wear lipstick and play football, can wear dresses and still kick ass and she takes pride in her being a woman.

What’s the best thing that’s ever happened to them? What’s the worst?

T H E B E S T ( discovering she’s a witch )

Mary turns eleven and this is what she knows: she’s a farm girl, she prefers speaking Spanish because then she gets to roll her R’s, she has two brothers and one sister, she is good at history and bad at maths, and strange things happen to her. Strange things that no one can quite explain, strange things that excite and frighten her at the same time. Strange things that happen when she’s happy or angry or scared.

One time, Carlos cut all the hair off her favourite doll’s head and Mary got so angry that his favourite car exploded in little pieces of plastic.

Mary turns eleven and a day and she knows all the same things and this: she is a witch. Suddenly there is an explanation for all these sparks and explosions, and Mary for a moment looks at her parents in fear, because doesn’t the bible say magic is evil? But the MacDonalds are accepting and open-minded and shake their head, because if magic flows through her daughter, there is no way it could be evil.

And so Mary accepts the truth and makes it her own. She’s a witch, and she’s proud and intrigued, as there are a thousand things she does not know yet. She gets her books and her wand and her robes, and her parents tell her she can take one of the family cats with her so she doesn’t have to miss him, and Mary dreams of a beautifully big castle with endless opportunities.

This moment in her life, of course, leads to many more beautiful ones. It leads to her meeting Alice and Lily, who soon become two new siblings of hers. It leads to her discovering that she has great power and that she can use it in incredible ways. It leads to her finding out about Quidditch and actually making it on the team — Mary played football back at home, you see and the team very much reminds her of her siblings and the sport of football, too. It leads to tasting Fizzing Whizbees and Chocolate Frogs. It leads to learning about new creatures and parts of history she did not now yet. It leads to meeting people who inspire her constantly. It leads to her growing as a person and a witch.

It also leads to things that are less pretty. It leads to her discovering that discrimination is a big part of the wizarding culture as well. It leads to her hearing slurs thrown at her and her red-haired sister. It leads to moments where she fails at spells. It leads to tumbling down stairs and losing her way and feeling overwhelmed with all these things that are new to her. It leads to being the victim of an Unforgivable curse. It leads to her being told that there is nothing they can do. It leads to her feeling lost and unsafe at a place that had become her second home. It leads to Hogwarts being attacked and Mary finding herself in a battle at sixteen years old. It leads to her seeing the dead bodies of people who taught her, of people she saw in the hallways. It leads to her learning of a war where people like herself and her friends are constantly killed for the things they are labelled to be.

Still, it’s the best thing that ever happened to her, and even though there are many bad things that happened because she entered the wizarding world at age eleven, she would never go back to just being a muggle.

T H E W O R S T ( mulciber )

She was in the wrong place at the wrong time. It was pure coincidence that it was her who had been there. It had not been personal, but it was, of course it still was.

You cannot take someone’s will away and say it wasn’t personal. You cannot cause mental harm to someone and say that it wasn’t even that bad. You should not even be able to get away with a thing like that, but Arjun Mulciber did.

He did, and left Mary fractured and confused, even if she didn’t like to admit it.

Perhaps the fact that it was random, that it could all be blamed on coincidence, was what made it even worse: Mary felt guilty wishing this hadn’t happened to her, as that would mean it would have happened to someone else. Another muggleborn, who was condemned for something they had no power over. And while she hated what had happened, while it made a cold feeling run over her spine whenever she thought of it, she could never wish it upon someone else.

Here’s the thing about someone taking away your will and forcing you to do things: it makes you distrustful of your own body, makes you feel unsafe wherever you go. While no physical harm had come to Mary when she was cursed, there was plenty of harm caused mentally. She had suddenly grown paranoid and scared, was damaged in a way she didn’t like to think about.

Mary, in all honesty, felt weak the moment the curse broke and even weaker now that months have passed. Because she is still not over it, is still worried about seeing his face again, is still haunted by that one afternoon and all the things that followed.

Maybe, if he’d been expelled, things would have been better. Maybe then, Mary would be able to move on and feel a little safer in the castle that was supposed to be her home. But he was still at Hogwarts, he was still laughing with friends and taking the same classes she would take next year. He was still there, very much okay, and she was, too, but she was not okay at all.

Her confrontation with Mulciber is something that has changed Mary. It has given her a new kind of bravery, but also more fears. It has given her paranoia, but also determination. It has given her a reason to cower in a corner, but that is not her, and so it has also given her a reason to move on with her head high and her entire being filled with a determination to prove people like him wrong.

Because if there’s one thing she’s sure of ( and there are not many of those ), it’s that she won’t allow this to happen to anyone else as long as she has a say in it.

Is there anyone they would kill for? Would they die for anyone? Where does that list differ?

Mary is, in the end, a selfless being. She looks at the war and wishes to fight to contribute to the greater good, to stand up for what is right and work towards a future of freedom and safety. Because of this, she would have no trouble dying in the war if it was meaningful. If she could save a life, she would, if she could buy a group of people time by facing death with a raised chin, she would. Mary isn’t necessarily scared to die, but she is scared of dying for no reason, with no purpose at all.

When I say that Mary would die to save a life, I don’t mean any life, of course. Mary might be noble and selfless, but she’s not reckless. She’s seen Death Eaters, she’s been attacked by a purist and she knows that she wouldn’t die for them. She wouldn’t die for people who’d kill her if they got the chance, wouldn’t die for people who are even less aggressive about their discrimination.

Still, the list for people she would die for is long: on top, of course, are her family and friends. Then follow classmates and students that are not blood purists, civilians, other victims of the war, etcetera, etcetera. Honestly, Mary hasn’t spent to much time thinking about it, but in this sense she’s very much Gryffindor: she is ready to die in battle, ready to die a death that is glorious and heroic. Mary is loyal and committed and is set on taking a big part in this war, as she feels like she has no choice either way.

Killing, however, is a different story. It’s not only a sin, but also just something that is very much wrong in Mary’s eyes. Still, she is not naive and not at all pacifistic, and knows the Death Eaters do things much worse than kill. While she would never kill out of choice, she knows that – if she were to become part of the war – she might have to choose between killing or being killed, and as it’s a war, she thinks she would be able to. Not that she likes the idea of it much.

If her killing somebody would save somebody she loved, she would without a thought. Mary is very much human and would not think about the moral side of it all ( which she would, was it her own life that was at stake ), as she will go to the end of the world to keep those she loves safe. The people she would kill for are Alice and Lily, naturally, all of her other friends and her family members.

As for other people, I’m not sure. There’s a lot of different scenarios to consider and the options are endless and I won’t bore you too much with them. If Mary could save a life by taking a other, she would feel very conflicted ( if this life didn’t belong to a loved one ) and I think it all depends on the situation, on who these people are and what the stakes exactly are. I can’t give a proper answer, but I do know that Mary would kill to save some lives, even though she doesn’t know this yet. Of course, she will always try to stun first.

How do they feel about the war? Do they plan on getting (more) involved?

Mary feels a wide range of emotions when it comes to the war:

- She is A N G R Y. Angry, because the school that was supposed to be a safe place was attacked, because there is a movement in the world that is against a certain group of people, a group that is willing to use violence to reach their goal, which is based on a crooked ideology. She is angry that there is discrimination, angry because it makes no sense and is only making the world a place that is scary and filled with terror. Mary knows the effects discrimination can have — her mother is a Puerto Rican living in a small Scottish town, after all — and has always been very strongly against it. The fact that blood purism has such a large following makes her feel hot with rage, in all honesty, because it’s simply wrong. A lot of her anger is also caused by a feeling of powerlessness. There is not much she can do, at this point, as she is still in school and has not even finished her education. And even if she was a fully qualified witch who no longer had to attend classes, there is only so little she can do. It’s frustrating to know that this war comes from a long, long history of purist thoughts and anti-muggle sentiments, and that it because of that won’t disappear as quickly as she would like. It’s frustrating to know that even though she might work her hardest and try her best to influence the world around her, it won’t be enough. This, of course, does not mean that Mary won’t try.

- She is F R I G H T E N E D. Fear is a funny thing, Mary learned last year. It’s like a different person altogether, living in a corner of your mind, and even when you think they’re gone, they’re still there. Whispering, softly making your muscles tense because the world around you is slowly falling apart and so are you, and while it’s enough to make someone angry, it’s also really scary. Mary knows what some people are capable of, has seen it, has felt it, and it’s simply unnerving to know what they are willing to do for their cause. Mary is frightened for the future and what is to come. She is terrified that the war will only get worse, that it will cost the lives of people she holds so very dear, that she will lose herself. She doesn’t like to admit it, but her fear is a thing that greatly influences her. It’s part of her, and Mary prefers to deny it rather than accept it, as she feels weak for being scared. Of course, it’s only logical that she is: this war is a terrifying one, after all.

- She is D E T E R M I N E D. The two emotions mentioned before both lead to Mary feeling determined. She’s someone who gets up every time, someone who will never be fully beaten down no matter what. Mary is determined to stand up for what is right, to fight in this war and show people that she will not stand for this injustice, that there is no way to silence her besides ending her life. Last years happenings had great impact on her, and while they have left her spirit somewhat fractured and her heart filled with invisible scars, she is trying to use her negative experiences to learn. Mary wishes to become an Auror, to practice the law the way she deems right. She wants to become part of the Ministry, an institution she does not back fully. That, however, is just another reason for her to work there: to be part of something that feels corrupt to her. The only way to make sure things are one the right way is to do it yourself, after all.

I don’t think I need to clarify it, but the answer is yes, Mary does plan on getting involved. She’s filled with determination, fear and anger and with those three emotions swirling through her being she will not sit by idly as a war rages on. Mary doesn’t know in what way she wishes to get more involved, as she doesn’t know what ways there are for her to do so. All she knows is that, eventually, she will. And rather sooner than later.

What’s their best class? How will that skill benefit them as they begin looking for a job?

Mary is, usually, best at Defense. It’s a class that comes natural to her, something that she also just enjoys very much. It’s a very physical and practical subject, and while Mary is good at theoretical stuff, these kind of things simply come more natural to her. She’s able to channel her emotions into her magic quite well, which is why spells as the Patronus are ones that she likes most.

It is not, however, her favourite class: the teacher changes every year, of course, which is something that very much bothers her. It’s tiring to her that she has to adjust to a new professor each year. No, Mary’s favourite subject is Transfiguration: she holds an immense amount of respect for Minerva McGonagall and as the class is a challenge it’s something that constantly keeps her interested and alert. She’s not as good in it as she’d like, but she’s never been bad at it.

In all honesty, Mary’s quite a good student. She’s skilled in many departments of magic and very much enjoys learning. It does depend on the teacher how motivated she is. With History, for example, she’s not very motivated because Binns is not the most inspirational teacher, to put it lightly. She dropped the subject because of this, but does enjoy reading history books very much ( it was one of her favourite subjects in elementary school ). Potions is a class she struggles with a lot, but as Lily is one of her best friends, she’s able to get help if she needs it.

Mary’s skills in DADA will definitely help her with the goals she has set for herself. Of course, becoming an Auror is more than dueling and fighting against the dark arts, but it is a very big part of it. She’s got her mind set on doing some extra assignments for the class this year as well, just to become better at the subject and so she can feel more prepared should another battle come.

How did they react when they learned of Dumbledore’s death?

Mary didn’t hold the same amount of respect for Albus Dumbledore that most of the people at Hogwarts and in the wizarding community did: he did not back her up when she needed him to, and it very much shattered her blind admiration for the man. Still, she knew that he was an important person to Hogwarts and was doing very much to keep the place safe from the war.

When she learned he had died, Mary was shocked. Dumbledore seemed like someone who could not be defeated, an immensely strong force in this war who was on the good side. On her side. She felt grief, too, of course. While he had disappointed her before, he had still been a good man – flawed, yes, but still good – and it was terrible that good people were killed. Fear followed once her shock and grief had become less loud, as this meant only terrible things for the future of Hogwarts. Mary hadn’t felt safe at Hogwarts for a couple of months before the battle, but this feeling only grew when Dumbledore was murdered. Even worse, she knew that other people would also start to feel unsafe and she didn’t wish that uponanyone.

The Legend of Zelda! I just played through the first quest on my NES Classic, and I found pretty much everything minus the Red Ring in Level 9. I stumbled on Gannon first, and well, that was that. It was so much fun!

I’m not going to say an unassisted play through of The Legend of Zelda in 2017 is for masochists only, mostly because if someone is going to go that route I assume at least you know where it’s going and it’ll probably be over in less than an hour.

If you’re old enough, you remember that such niceties as text or tutorials were a rare item indeed in the 8-bit generation of video games. The story largely came from the manual, talking non-playable characters basically sputtered cryptic clues and gibberish, and companies like Nintendo made special maps, guide books and other special items in-pack or sold separately to take advantage of the fact that the game basically tells you nothing about how to play it. If you didn’t memorize the instruction booklet on the drive home from Lionel PlayWorld, you had no idea what the Hell was going on. I also remember it being $34.99, cheap.

As a kid, this was my favorite game - I considered it to be the best game of all time for quite some time, too. As I’ve gotten older I’ve moved away from “this game is long so it’s good” to “this game is short so it’s good.” My replay was just a couple of hours, but only because I knew where stuff was. You could spend dozens of hours walking around killing things before you realized that the candle could be used to burn trees, or exactly how and where bombs were best deployed on rocks to find secrets. I loved the combat, and the discovery was very rewarding. It was a big deal to get a sword upgrade from a dude behind a waterfall or in a graveyard.

The basic format of the game is largely unchanged for the entire series - you’re Link, there’s a big world map, there are a series of dungeons, and you need to collect something or other to put the world in order before Gannon comes back and wins the electoral college, or something like that. Despite being super simple, I loved the creature designs. Tektites were crickets crossed with spiders. Octoroks were little land octopus things that could spit rocks. Peahats were invincible flowers... until they stopped moving. Leevers, I don’t know what those are. I know what they look like. There’s a flared base. (Naughty naughty.)

The bosses were really cool - there were two strains of dragons, giant spiders, some dinosaurs that hated smoking, a four-headed piranha plant creature that lived in something that looked like a swastika because nobody here really teaches grade schoolers about Buddhist symbols being modified and co-opted by history’s greatest monsters. But I digress.

It was always a treat to figure out what to do or where to go, with the real prize being what amounted to a free sequel with even more new rules once you beat the game. A couple of new enemies plus the ability to walk through dungeon walls were added to the mix, and how you were supposed to know that without a friend telling you is beyond me. A reworked overworld with all-new dungeons was a heck of a bonus challenge, especially when you can’t exactly afford a new game due to not exactly having a job. (I’ll probably ramble about that later.)

The dungeons were clean and easy to read, with surprisingly good sound effects for opening doors and the creepy rumbles of various monsters. You could blow holes in the walls, open passages with keys, or move secret blocks that acted as a switch to reveal hidden staircases. Again, how you’d know this is beyond me. It’s amazing any of us ever finished it, but it provided the best video game boot camp for players and designers for year to come. Now you knew there were new rules - Mario just asked you to hit some blocks or jump down a pipe. Zelda needed to make sure you pushed and burned and blew up everything, and saved your money to buy stuff, and killed monsters along the way.

The kingdom of Hyrule supposedly had a castle and royalty and people, but all you ever met were merchants, hoarders, and people with gambling problems. Later games would give you more quests and more people to save, but that doesn’t mean that the original Zelda wasn’t quotable in its dubious translation.

...the latter of which is regularly featured in my work communications. I still love this game and I have the Jakks 8-Bit Link action figure trio on my desk right now - I bought the Amiibo as well. I wouldn’t recommend it to new gamers due to how obtuse and frustrating it is without full documentation and a real dedication to patience, but I’m sure you could cheat your way through it on a Saturday afternoon. Over the last decade I’ve found I’d much rather play the oft-maligned sequel Zelda II: The Adventure of Link thanks to its proto-RPG elements, distinctive combat, and generally Metroid-esque layout.

As I got older, the series has lost me a bit. I beat the first four games and loved them. I never stuck with the N64 ones long enough - thanks, college - and am currently procrastinating going back to the Wii U HD remake of Twilight Princess. If nothing else, the series has showed how old I’ve become. I adored A Link Between Worlds on the 3DS, but at this point I don’t know if I’m at all eager for anything that isn’t effectively a new 2D Zelda. I don’t think it’s a reflection on the games so much as my desire to pound the pavement in Hyrule and explore every last area without resorting to assistance.

I have such a fondness for this game that after having beat it moments ago, writing about it makes me want to jump in the second quest when I wake up tomorrow. If that’s not a seal of quality, I don’t know what is.
