Shizumi @ Okachimachi Station
I wanted to keep working on portraits as I'm preparing my blorbos for Artfight. I took the background photo a while ago and I've been meaning to draw more of my lads in the scenery photos I take.

Entry 7: First Hang Out
Date: 15.04.2024
This week was quiet, I didn’t go out that much because I was busy focusing on university work, for Bristol UWE, as the initial deadline was slowly approaching. However, on Friday, me and some of the other students decided to meet for a little drink/picnic in Ueno Park. Public drinking is legal here, I was shocked but not surprised because of the number of stories or things you hear about with Japanese drinking culture.
However, before I met with the rest, I decided to show Dom around Harajuku real quick. Specifically, the backstreets, and boyyyy he literally fell in love lol. Ask him yourself if you ever meet him hahaha.
I did my makeup gal style (gyaru) that day, whenever I go to Harajuku, I always want to dress up extra, and slay harder than usual!! Also, whilst we were there, we decided to go to La Foret, this cool shopping mall which has lots of j-fashion brands. I ventured to nearly every floor and added so much to my mental wish list (if I were to buy everything, I liked there I would’ve gone broke lol). As I went to the lower floors, Dom and I stumbled upon this independent artist pop-up area. Again, I found so many things I loved but I actually happened to find this one illustration artist who I was already following on Instagram selling her stuff there! Like stickers and stuff. https://www.instagram.com/gyaruuuuuuuu?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==
She is also a fellow gyaru~ So I decided to pick up some of her stuff✨
However further exploring this area I found this one guy setting up his station, he was a fashion designer and we got to talking for a while and they even complimented my look! They were really chill! When I went more into the centre of this area, I found Fruits magazines! FRUITS MAGAZINES!!
FRUITS!!!!
MAGAZINEESSS!!! MULTIPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For those who don’t know it’s this famous magazine which captures J-fashion street styles from the 90s-2010s, it went out of publishment not so long ago. This was because of the creator … saying that “there were no longer any cool kids in Harajuku anymore”, extreme I know but if you remember what I said a while ago about “the death of Harajuku J-fashion/subcultures” you could kind of understand. This is a very influential magazine, I’d say most people who are into J-fashion found out about it through fruits magazine, I’d say maybe 70% of people find out about it through that magazine. In other words, this is like my bible! I had to buy it no questions asked!!
A very funny interaction I had whilst was going to pay was that on my phone case there’s a little see through part which allows me to put a little image of whatever I want. Typically, idols, fictional characters, lovers, friends or whatever photo you want can typically go inside! I decided a while ago to put this drawing I made of a somewhat recent character I’ve been obsessed with, Miguel O’Hara ✨ From Across the Spiderverse. If you haven’t watched it you totally should its amazingggggg, the first movie I liked, but the second one, MWAH, its cult classic material I LOVE ITTTTTTTTTT. I like what watched it like 4 times in cinemas or something, 7 ish times in general of the top of my head it was soo good! However when I went to pay one of the cashiers I caught peering at my phone case, she asked who it was, I responded, and she knew of Miguel and the movie TOT!!! We both like fangirled for a hot minute. I love to see that fangirling is a global phenomenon hahahhahaa.
However, time was of the essence, and we needed to go and meet the others. So, we met Matthijs and Minnie around the entrance to Ueno Park, and together we walked a lap around the park. We saw street vendors, public entertainers, swan boats and sooo many picnics as it was Sakura season of course. Without a picnic blanket we decided to sit down and vibe together. Another person from student exchange came later, Anna. It was really nice to get to know everyone before university started!
We also asked some people to take a photo of us with Minnies polaroid, she says for her documentation of her stay that she’ll take a polaroid photo every day. So cool~ In an exchange the people also asked to take photos with us too lol.
Later on, we headed over to somewhere nearby to look for an izakaya for some food and drinks, it was super busy, but again a nice vibe!! And food!!! ------------------------------------
I still have so much coursework to finish. I want to relax and explore Japan, so the quicker I finish this assignment the sooner I can be free and have fun! I am having fun right now still though >-<
Bye for now~~~~

Thelma Aoyama Celebrates Gyaru Culture with "Sekai no Chuushin ~We Are The World~"
Singer-songwriter Thelma Aoyama has got us yelling Age-poyo!! like it’s the mid 2000s again with the release of the nostalgic short music video for her song “Sekai no Chuushin ~We Are The World~“. Inspired by walking around the streets of Shibuya—the center of Gyaru fashion and lifestyle—”Sekai no Chuushin ~We Are The World~” is a […]

For the ask game 1,2,4 and 21 😘
Thanks for the ask kazu!☺️ Sorry it took me a while to answer💦
1. fave book?
This is a hard one, since I don't have an absolute favourite book. The only two books that have passed the test of time for me are The Little Prince and the Shiver series by Maggie Stiefvater✨
But the books I thought of first when I read the question are books I read last year and blew my mind: Human Acts by Han Kang and Tokyo Ueno Station by Yu Miri. They literally changed me as a person💜 (Also, I Can Hear the Sunspot had a huge impact on me, but it's a manga). Although they are really sad books, though 🙈🙈
2. fave movie?
"Flying colours" (or "Biri gyaru" in romanized Japanese)💕 I have watched the movie countless times and it always gives me strength to aim for the things I want💪 (in the past I watched it whenever I needed motivation to study lol).
Also, a recent favourite is "Your eyes tell" (君の瞳問いかけている) for completely different reasons. (Although both the female protagonist in this one and the other are super strong and I love them). This movie is more dramatic and difficult to watch, but it's so worth it because of the message of hope that it gives💖
4. fave song?
Right now, it would be For My Stella by Visty. It is upbeat and has a nice message that always cheers me up 💕 my fave line means in English "People grow with compliments, let's block all negativity" (more or less)
But an old time favourite is Sooner or Later by Michael Tolcher. I think it's one of those pieces that helps you see the bigger picture✨
21. fave animal?
Dogs! I love cats with all I have, and my family had a cat when I was younger, but dogs bring me so much joy 😭❤️
But I also adore small animals like hamsters, bunnies and squirrels💕 but I'm going to stop because otherwise I'll just talk about even more animals🤣

"I’m going to be completely real here.  Up until three minutes into writing this paragraph, I’ve never heard of Hajimete no Gal (First Time Girl) and its My Anime List (MAL) synopsis left much to be desire in explaining what’s up with the show (as most MAL synopsis are).  I took it upon myself to researching the upcoming anime by studio NAZ (hey! That sounds like Nas the rapper.  That must be a great sign!) After completing my quick lackluster research, I found that Hajimete no Gal is  based off  Shonen Ace’s  romantic comedy manga of the same name by Meguru Ueno. Main character Junichi  is pressured by his homeboys to seek out a girlfriend and lose his virginity to her  during his first year of high school.  He encounters the alluring gyaru Yukana, who shames him for looking at a porn magazine openly in school.  Junichi decides to make it his mission to confess his feelings towards Yukana and get with her. To his surprise, Yukana is incredibly sexually forward, teasing him about how much he wants to sleep with her by flashing her panties and revealing her cleavage towards the kid.  From my first impression off two chapters, the art is amazing and the story is funny enough to catch my attention." Press Release:
Project Native Informant is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of Harumi Yamaguchi outside of Asia. A leading name in the world of Japanese advertising, she pioneered the highly dramatic but elusively flat airbrush aesthetic closely associated with commercial illustration. Yamaguchi’s practice places her in the vanguard of new painterly practices and as a celebrated documenter of an emerging feminist aesthetic from the 1970s onwards.
Born in Matsue in the Shimane prefecture, Yamaguchi graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts in oil painting. She began her career as a freelance illustrator, spearheading the advertising for the renowned retail establishment PARCO. From its outset, PARCO was established to combine a commercial retail establishment with a cultural facility, combining platforms such as museum, theater, and publishing in addition to retail. Yamaguchi’s role as engineer of the project’s mise-en- scène places her in the center of art and design in Japan.
As one of the original gyaru—commonly known also as “Shibuya Girls” rising from out ūman ribu or the feminist movements of the 1970s and generally applied to professionally-empowered but trend-conscious young women—Yamaguchi’s position at PACRO gave her license to portray an emerging cosmopolitan woman, liberated from the vestiges of traditional femininity and empowered through consumerism to define her own individuality. “Harumi’s gals” are often active and in motion—be it throwing a ball or swimming in a crystal blue pool—and returning the gaze of the viewer. As Chizuko Ueno noted in her essay published in connection to Women of the 70s PARCO Poster Exhibition 1969-1986 exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography in 2001, “while appearing to adhere to the scenario of male-tailored eroticism, Yamaguchi deconstructs male desire through her exaggerative depictions. As a consequence, the female body is idealized to a realm unreachable by male hands”.
Yamaguchi is in the collection of the CCGA Graphic Art Center, Fukushima; Kawasaki City Museum, Kanagawa, Japan; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis.
This exhibition will feature a series of unique paintings as well as a selection of advertising posters and videos, which are central to Yamaguchi’s practice.
We thank Nanzuka Underground with the development of this exhibition.
