One thing I've realised I've not seen enough of in the wake of the massive weekly Palestine solidarity protests across the UK is warnings to younger and newer folk attending a protest maybe for the first time not just about security culture but about the fucking SWP. If you've never heard of them (I envy you) they're the Socialist Worker Party and they'll likely be found selling newspapers or handing out branded placards. Apart from being generally parasitic to movements and extremely hierarchical, the SWP have a history of rape apology and cover ups that isn't hard to find out about online. So once again, protect yourself and others, here's a link with pretty much all the information you need about them.
If you live in the UK, you have gotta start using these services as much as you can! They will use low user numbers as further justification for cutting services. Make use of your leisure centres, libraries, and any arts services. Show them some love!
“It’s like The Hunger Games, the AMPTP thinks they can starve us back to work,” said Bectu National Secretary Spencer MacDonald, as around 200 below-the-line workers gathered in London’s Leicester Square this afternoon to urge a swift end to the actors strike.
MacDonald was bullish, however, in the face of a possible resolution in the coming days, telling studio bosses across the pond: “Every single time, we win these disputes.”
“We need to remind employers that by dragging their heels and digging themselves in all they are doing is digging a bigger hole for themselves,” he added. “And we want to talk about the impact on our membership.”
Although unions in the UK are forbidden to join foreign strikes by tight labor laws, a recent Bectu survey found that an incredible 80% of UK crew felt they had been impacted by what is happening in the States, and Bectu has been calling for financial support from the government and AMPTP.
there really is fuck all to do in london these days. can't get hrt, can't join a doomed polar expedition. happy 176th anniversary of the abandonment of hms erebus and terror btw
Intelligent little girls being more educated in ethics, morality, Human rights and history than a huge proportion of the world's population on Palestine - of course they are girls are magic ✨ 💖💕💗
"Why are you supporting Palestine?"
"It's not fair to literally just kill people for the sake of it. They're saying that they're Jews but, they aren't because Jewish people, some do support Palestine, they're actually Zionists and this is a genocide so you know, why not?
"Can you tell me about the history of Palestine?
"The history of Palestine is that in 1948 the UN made the plan to make Palestine's land Israel's, and create the state of Israel, which is not true: by doing this they killed the Palestinians to make only Israel people in that state."
Do you know about the West, like Britain and the USA's involvement in Palestine?
"The involvement of Joe Biden and Rishi Sunak is like unacceptable, they should be standing with the Palestinians because they know human rights. "
( I just need to add that when I wrote 'Rishi' it got autocorrected to 'ridicule' 😂😂😂)
There have been weekly demonstrations in the city centre of Dundee in solidarity with Palestine, but the police have refused to grant permission for a march until the 18th of November. On Saturday the 28th of October, local socialist Jim Barlow used his speech on the microphone to call for a march anyway, arguing that it is ridiculous to have to ask police permission to go ahead with a march on largely pedestrianised public streets in a supposedly democratic country. The march went ahead, with the police accomodating it after realising that there was nothing they could do to stop it. The following morning, at 8am, Jim was arrested at his home under some old public order law, and his bail conditions prevent him from being in the city centre until a hearing on November the 28th.
As a result of these draconian bail conditions, Jim was unable to attend the protest last Saturday (4th November), but I'm sure he'll be pleased to know that a spontaneous march through the city took place which, once again, the police were unable to stop. The youth climbed atop the imperialist statue of Queen Victoria, draping Palestinian flags over her, while the high street was filled with red and green smoke and chants for a free Palestine.
Britons enjoy very high living standards by virtually any benchmark. Last year the top-earning 3 per cent of UK households each took home about £84,000 after tax, equivalent to $125,000 after adjusting for price differences between countries. This puts Britain’s highest earners narrowly behind the wealthiest Germans and Norwegians and comfortably among the global elite.
So what happens when we move down the rungs? For Norway, it’s a consistently rosy picture. The top 10 per cent rank second for living standards among the top deciles in all countries; the median Norwegian household ranks second among all national averages, and all the way down at the other end, Norway’s poorest 5 per cent are the most prosperous bottom 5 per cent in the world. Norway is a good place to live, whether you are rich or poor.
It’s a similar story in the middle. In 2007, the average UK household was 8 per cent worse off than its peers in north-western Europe, but the deficit has since ballooned to a record 20 per cent. On present trends, the average Slovenian household will be better off than its British counterpart by 2024, and the average Polish family will move ahead before the end of the decade. A country in desperate need of migrant labour may soon have to ask new arrivals to take a pay cut.
Britain is a different story. While the top earners rank fifth, the average household ranks 12th and the poorest 5 per cent rank 15th. Far from simply losing touch with their western European peers, last year the lowest-earning bracket of British households had a standard of living that was 20 per cent weaker than their counterparts in Slovenia.
I check in with the Daily Mail every once in a while to make sure I'm seeing what folk are exposed to, and the top rated comments on this article were all anti-monarchy (except for one pointing out that the had misnamed the Princess of Wales by calling her princess Kate)
The British public are fed up with these parasites.
