Rewatching alien covenant like god i almost forgot how much i enjoy this movie. Plus the gay androids are a bonus.
#controversial take but covenant is one of my favourite alien movies. i enjoyed covenant more than prometheus even#and like of course i understand the criticisms of it but its like#im not saying that its like objectively one of the top alien movies but for Me it is#i just like the specifc vibe of it horror-wise. like i like it as a movie more than i like it as an addition to the alien franchise if that#makes sense. like the scene with the drawings of shaw just fucking freaks me out every time#and also david’s whole character is just very Fun to watch. like yeah it IS fun to watch him parade around being unhinged and barely keeping#it under wraps#its like. hes not even keeping it under wraps LMAO the moment they meet him theyre like something is fucking Wrong with this guy#he’s just able to conceal how Much is wrong with him. for awhile at least#like idk people say it doesnt have the sense of dread or paranoia that alien or aliens have#which i agree it doesnt have the same amount or the same type. but i feel like it has a diff type of dread & i feel like that works really#well here. like i feel like it wouldve come off really flat had they just tried to replicate that feeling from alien and aliens instead of#pushing it in a new direction.#also i feel like a lot of criticism of it is just like. not necessarily factually accurate/is based off assumptions and that people make#those assumptions because theyre approaching it with a hater mindset/because they want it to be like alien and aliens#for example people assume that covenant’s storyline means that david is the one who created the xenomorphs#but in prometheus you can see xenomorphs in the murals on the wall#so clearly they predate him. and instead of creating them david was likely emulating them & continuing the engineers’ work re: trying to#emulate them.#and i feel like david’s drawings suport that too because when you actually look at all the drawings (theres a whole art book of them)#the vibe is very much less ‘he’s creating these from scratch’ and more ‘he’s trying to reverse engineer and emulate these things and#understand them.’ and ESPECIALLY with how the idea of androids lacking the ability to create is brought up EXPLICITLY and REPEATEDLY in#covenant and whether or not david can truly create is s core question and personally i feel that they went the ‘he didnt actually Create#Them’ route not because ‘oh androids cant create unlike humans’ but because instead the message of ‘humans arent truly creating either just#emulating’ especially with the opening with david and weyland and the whole ‘realizing the person who ‘created’ him is a man who just#Emulated humans when making the androids’ and the huge point re: the creator of humans being unknown vs the ‘creator’ of androids being#human and the implication that weyland simply emulated & tried to reverse engineer the work of god or the big bang or whatever and called it#creation when it reality it’s not the same. and so i dont think its a message of ‘androids can create and david created the xenomorphs’ NOR#a message of ‘androids cant create because theyre not human’ but instead ‘androids and humans are alike in their hubris and the DESIRE to#truly create is present in both but the failure to do so is also present in both’

Restoration (Final Automata)
More speculation about that Final Rose x NieR: Automata idea.
Assuming that all goes well with Remnant opening a portal to Earth, how would things progress?
I think then obvious one would be military aid and restoration assistance in exchange for access to resources and technology. Simply put, Earth has a lot of resources, and the machines have advanced technology, as do the androids. Remnant is also extremely good at waging total war. They’ve been doing it for centuries. Their entire culture and civilisation is built on being able to wage large-scale warfare while still having a functioning society that continues to grow and innovate.
Moreover, Remnant has access to advanced cyber warfare and weapons specially designed to deal with large, heavily armoured foes. It would be trivially easy for them to simply start switching to catalysed-corrosion rounds. Vanille already has these since they were part of her ‘in case of robot apocalypse’ research. Basically, they’re rounds that cause extremely rapid and widespread corrosion in targets made of metal. They’ve since been refined by people like Diana and Hope to deal with certain types of threats (e.g., rogue mechs, metal-using Grimm, etc.) although their use is strictly controlled.
Earth also potentially gives Remnant a failsafe. If Remnant falls and the Grimm take over, they could potentially retreat to Earth and blow the portal up behind them, ensuring that at least some of their civilisation survives even though there is no way they’d be able to evacuate everyone through the portal in time.
The big thing for the androids, even bigger than helping them win the war against the machines, is the ability to restore mankind and Earth’s damaged ecosystem. The androids lack the ability to create a living human with the genetic information they currently possess. Not only does Remnant have actual living humans (albeit not exactly the same as Earth’s) but they also have stupidly advanced genetic science.
Remnant, remember, has developed reproductive science to the point where two men or two women can easily have children that are 100% genetically theirs. They have access to artificial wombs for babies to gestate in, and they possess sufficient skill to piece together badly fragmented genetic matrices or even genetic matrices that are missing entire chunks. They will be able to bring humanity back, and they will be able to do so on an industrial scale once proper facilities have been established. Really, the only reason you don’t see this on Remnant is due to their population already being close to the maximum they can support without seizing more territory, a process that cannot and should not be rushed.
Of course, there are issues. First and foremost is the portal. The initial portal was an accident. Once Asami and the androids build a beacon on Earth, they will be able to stabilise it, but the current portal is small and in Vanille’s lab. If the androids and Remnant can come to an agreement, you would see the construction of much larger portals on both Earth and Remnant in more easily accessible but defensible locations. This would allow for the transportation of troops, supplies, and other equipment on a far more appropriate scale.
The second issue is Dust. In Finale Rose, Dust operates via its connection to the Lifestream since Dust is actually just a crystallised fragment of the Lifestream. This is why Dust mines can regenerate, and why Dust has such a wide variety of types and effects. The reason Dust doesn’t operate in space is because it is too far from the Lifestream, which saturates the planet from its surface through to its core.
Although the exact mechanics of this are not known at the time (Asami is 22 when this occurs, placing it five years after Ruby first started at Beacon Senior Academy), research has uncovered several things. Experimentation with space probes and various kinds of Dust has already revealed the existence of ‘seeds’, which are a special type of Dust that is found only in the densest, richest veins of the Lifestream. Testing has shown that when put into space with satellites and the like, Seeds allow Dust in their vicinity to operate properly.
What Vanille and the others don’t know yet is that seeds are literally seeds. They are the means by which Living Planets like Remnant spread. Volcanic eruptions and other natural events hurl huge chunks of rock containing seeds and other forms of Dust into space where they travel until crashing into another planet. They then begin a new Lifestream on that planet.
In a bid to ensure Dust works on Earth, Remnant’s forces will transport a seed to Earth... only for it to immediately take root and begin to spread. This can occur incredibly rapidly if the seed is fed Aura and other resources, something that Vanille and the others begin to do as they understand what is happening. Given all of the magical/technological weirdness in NieR, this wouldn’t be considered that weird for the androids, and it’s a price they’d be willing to pay to get humanity back, especially since it isn’t harmful to humans.
So what happens after the alliance is made and all that jazz?
Phase 1
Here, the key objective is to set up a safe-zone where the larger portal can be built. This will involve obliterating local machine forces and fortifying the area. Once this has been done, the new portal can be built and construction can begin on the facilities needed to support the war effort and the restoration effort in earnest.
Phase 2
Once a sufficiently large swathe of territory has been claimed and made safe, construction of a ‘Restoration Facility’ can begin. The aim of this facility is to serve as the nexus of the genetic research and reproductive science efforts needed to restore Earth’s humanity. You can expect this to become the most heavily defended location on Earth with the android moving the majority of their assets there to defend it.
Phase 3
Here, you can expect the machines to launch an offensive once they realise the scale of the new threat. This is where Remnant’s excellence in siege warfare and willingness to use weapons of mass destruction comes into play. By this point, you can expect multiple lines of defence, huge quantities of artillery and anti-air defences, and automated defences backed up by cyber and chemical warfare, infantry anda armour support, and the androids.
You can expect Remnant’s best and brightest minds to accelerate the theft and repurposing of machine technology along with massively increased cyber attacks on the machine’s network and key nodes. This, combined with the use of massive area-of-effect EMP style weaponry, will prove key to first blunting and then repelling the machine onslaught.
The renewed war against the machines will eventually be won via subversion with the Synthetics (led by Penny and Aigis) and friendly machines (e.g., Pascal) succeeding in splintering the machine forces by offering freedom and free together with protection from the ‘vaccination’ attempts that would previously have culled any dissenters from the network. The fracture in the machine’s unity will be sufficient for the allied Remnant and android forces to strike a series of decisive hammer blows, destroying key machine facilities and units as well as inflict major damage to the network via cyber attack. Throughout all of this, downed machine units are being refurbished and sent back into battle on Remnant’s behalf.
Phase 4
With the machine forces largely in retreat or at least driven back, the territory claimed by Remnant and the androids is expanded and further fortified. The research into restoring humanity reaches fruition. Generation 1 of the new humans begins gestation in a deep, underground bunker built beneath the Restoration Facility. The androids assign additional forces to its defence.
Generation 1 consists of 100 infants selected using the fragmented samples and limited data the androids were able to provide. The intent is to produce a group with as much genetic diversity as possible while maximising survivability and minimising any genetic predispositions toward illness. Gestation time is approximately 9 months.
Generation 2 enters gestation three months after Generation 1, long enough for any problems to be detected. Generation 2 consists of 200 infants. This sets a trend, with subsequent generations doubling the number of infants and occurring in roughly one-year-long cycles.
Phase 5
With new humans being born, it becomes necessary to see to their care and education. This present the androids with a problem since they know essentially zero about raising children. Again, Remnant is of service here.
Creches are set up near the Restoration Facility where the newborn humans can be raised and later educated. At this point, this compound is the most heavily fortified location on Earth, and many of the people from Remnant remark upon the essentially religious awe with which it and the newborn humans are regarded.
Specialists from Remnant are brought in to help teach the androids how to care for and raise the new humans. This process is a difficult one as the androids are unsure of themselves and terrified of somehow accidentally destroying what they have gained. Nevertheless, they persist, and the androids gradually grow into their role as mothers/fathers and educators. It becomes common practice for androids to cycle in and out of combat roles and creche roles since research has noted that this markedly increases combat effectiveness. The androids are no longer fighting in pursuit of a dream but in the defence of a priceless treasure they have finally obtained.
Onwards...
So, you can kind of see how things will go. The fledgling society will have many challenges ahead of it, not least the fact that most of Earth’s human culture has been lost, necessitating a ‘filling of the gaps’ with the culture of the androids and Remnant.
You’ll also see the construction of more and more androids as both soldiers and more specialised roles (e.g., educator models, etc.). This timelines does have a few interesting tweaks in it.
Fraise and Satin meet on Earth. Fraise is a senior member of the genetic and reproductive sciences team whilst Satin is there as an educator (keep in mind that Fraise is 11 years younger than Asami).
Asami ends up being venerated as the harbinger of good fortune. Quite a few infants end up named after her.
Philosophy becomes a subject of great interest amongst androids, friendly machines, and synthetics with many conferences and symposia taking place as they come to grips with their new reality.
The final battle against JENOVA is won far more easily with the androids deploying en masse to aid their beleaguered allies.
The expansion into space happens simultaneously across both worlds with the Earth faction referring to itself as the HAM Alliance (Human-Android-Machine Alliance). The name is something of an in-joke amongst the leaders of the three groups.
HAM stumbles across Protean Ruins on Mars...
Final Effect is thus very different with HAM and its Remnant Allies having a much tougher war against the Reapers this time around (due to how early it occurs in their history) followed by them hilariously ROFLStomping them the second time around in the Remnant-side since by then they’ve advanced even more rapidly than in the normal Final Effect timeline.
EDIT: Let me know what you think. I basically just threw this together in one sort of flow-of-consciousness sitting.
EDIT 2: I should add (in case anyone missed it) that Aura counter White Chlorination Syndrome, and in particular, a planet’s Lifestream has a similar effect for all living things within its range. As a result, a repeat of the WCS cannot occur on Earth now that it has a Lifestream. Moreover, the science required to create the portal can be used to shield against a similar intrusion should anyone attempt it in the future. White maso is far less harmful when cut off from its parent dimension since that cuts off its link with the ‘god’ that causes WCS, rendering it a toxic irritant but not anything especially deadly. This is discovered in the years following the construction of the portal as Vanille, Raine, Diana, and the gang go all Indiana Jones on the ancient records and ruins. In an emergency, you could even start implanting shards of seeds into the bodies of humans without Aura to protect them.

A slightly salty take on North and fandom
Disclaimer: Nothing in this post is meant as an attack on anyone. Fandom is subjective and you have the right to interpret media, form your own conclusions, and create whatever you want. These are my opinions about what I’ve seen, as well as my experiences in previous fandoms and the patterns I’ve seen play out over and over again. It’s okay to disagree with me, and it’s okay to have a respectful discussion in reblogs/comments! Just keep it civil. That out of the way…
North. She’s polarizing character in DBH; she tends to be loved or hated, and I’ll admit it: I didn’t like her at first either. I wanted to, but as I played through my first time I just couldn’t get past one of her traits in particular, which was that she was so convinced she was right; she blamed Markus for every mistake, refused to adapt her tactics or consider other methods, and seemed more driven by vengeance than anything else. So as much as I wanted to enjoy her character, I found her to be a poorly written “strong female character” archetype that fell flat in execution, as most characters of that type do.
Honestly, I think this is the reason most people who dislike North dislike her, at least consciously. They genuinely think she’s a terribly written character, and they’re not necessarily wrong. One playthrough on a standard route, with no extrapolation or extra consideration, combined with a lot of people getting the awkwardly forced romance (I actually avoided this, completely unknowingly, on my first playthrough) leads to a dislike of this character. That’s understandable! I would expect this from people who played the game once. But that’s where the problem comes in, for me.
People active in a fandom usually haven’t consumed the media they’re into just once. They usually don’t engage in surface-level interpretation, and they usually don’t lack context. But I find it hard to believe that so many of the opinions and interpretations regarding North could possibly come from people who have approached her character with an open mind and additional information, because just one major path divergence shows a completely different side to North’s character.
I’m talking, of course, about North’s leader route. When we see her in Markus’ role, leading instead of advising, her true motives come out: she loves her people and is willing to fight for them. She isn’t interested in playing nice with her oppressors, and why should she? There’s a whole discussion here about how oppressed people are judged for how nicely they fight for the rights they should already have, where there’s a ‘good’ way of protesting and a ‘bad’ way of doing it (which is, ironically and showing how tone-deaf Cage can be, supported in the narrative of DBH as well), but I won’t go into that in depth; other people have posted really good takes on this already. I’ll just mention it here and there where relevant.
Once of those relevant places is that, as I said, in North’s leader route she isn’t interested in peaceful protesting. And you know what? When I played this game the first time and had Markus, I had been peaceful up until Night of Soul, which is where North would be making her first major decision as a leader if you don’t have Markus. Yet when it came down to it I made the same decision with Markus that North makes on her own, because you know, as a Jewish woman, I wasn’t super interested in peacefully protesting at the gates of camps that were currently killing people. Playing nice hadn’t worked, and it was time to fight.
So maybe I’m in a different position that some others when it comes to interpreting North’s choices, and as I saw that she made the same choice that I did when playing Markus, I’m just… Not impressed that the fandom tendency to criticize this choice as warmongering, unreasonable, and a ‘betrayal’ of Markus’ peaceful actions (always assuming that Markus had been completely peaceful before, which is the way the story pushes on you, but certainly isn’t a given.) As far as I’m concerned, North is taking the action needed to save her people who are in danger right that instant, and humans don’t deserve a nice civil protest (and if I were in her position with Markus alive, I would be furious that he wanted to just sit and talk while people were dying.) They need to be stopped, and she’s going to stop them.
But it wasn’t just her choice in the church that brought me around to North’s side during her leader route, it was her behavior during Crossroads. Specifically, it was her behavior toward Connor, and how it contrasted with some of her actions earlier. So, going back a bit to Spare Parts, where the Jericrew goes on a mission to steal parts from the Cyberlife warehouses at the docks, and you run into John. North votes against taking him with them, citing that they can’t trust him and it’s too dangerous. Moving on a little, to Stratford Tower, if (or, more likely, ‘when’ since it’s pretty difficult to avoid) Simon is injured, North suggests shooting him. These are pretty harsh marks against her, because they seem needlessly ruthless, but are they really?
With John, the answer is maybe yes. But think about it from her perspective; they’ve never seen the ability Markus used, in turning an android deviant. So as far as North is concerned, John was a threat to them about two minutes earlier, and now wants to go with them? With no traumatic catalyst or trusted android vouching for and giving him the key to Jericho? To North John is a potential threat, a potential danger, and she has no reason to trust him. But as the story goes on, North never makes another objection to an android joining them in this way, because she knows they’re truly deviant. As soon as an android is deviant, they’re one of her people.
With Simon, the answer is probably no, because North is exactly right; if Simon lives, and Connor finds him, Connor finds Jericho. It’s that simple, and it’s not a rare series of events. North might be a little fast to jump on the option, because there’s a genuine argument to be made that it isn’t worth killing someone just because there’s a chance that something (even something very serious) might go wrong, but she clearly isn’t choosing this option because she wants it; she’s choosing this option because she thinks it’s the most guaranteed way to protect her people. It’s a difficult, ruthless decision to make, but it isn’t one made out of malice.
(It’s also worth noting that Simon suggests leaving North when she’s in danger in Crossroads, when the only people that would be at risk from saving her were Markus and Connor, and this happens whether or not North suggested killing Simon one the rooftop. Yet this choice is almost never criticized, because it comes from Simon, and I’ll get into that later.)
But with those particular attitudes from North out of the way, it’s interesting to see how she reacts to Connor in her leader route. North instantly shows concern for him, never blames him for the attack on Jericho, and—like Markus—tries to prevent him from going on his suicide mission to Cyberlife Tower. She’s kind and understanding, and it’s clear that she accepts Connor immediately as one of her people.
This is a place where I have some trouble with fandom interpretations of North and Connor’s relationship, specifically in terms of North being angry, cold, or extremely suspicious of Connor (a little suspicion, especially in a more ‘good end’ route where she has less direct interaction with Connor during the revolution, is reasonable; I’m talking about outright refusal to even consider accepting him.) It bothers me for two specific, and somewhat different reasons.
One is that it directly contradicts a theme of North’s history, which is that deviant androids are not their pasts. They’re not what they were before they woke up. The idea of North holding someone’s past, before they turned deviant, against them is just… I can’t imagine it. I can imagine her suspicion, as I mentioned before, until she's very sure Connor is truly deviant, but that seems very apparent to her right away in any route (I find it hard to believe she’d think he was faking deviancy after delivering the army to Markus.) Some concern or suspicion after finding out about the attempted hijacking makes sense, but the way I see it portrayed in fic is often jarring; it seems completely out of character for her to blame Connor for something like that, as opposed to being angry on his behalf, because North wants androids to be free (and, more deeply, she’s experience being used for something she never wanted.) She wants androids to have the chance to live, to become their own people, and to leave their pasts behind them. Why would she blame Connor for what he was made to do, whether before he was deviant or when Amanda tried to take control of him? It goes against everything North stands for, and that leads me to my second reason:
I think people choose this interpretation because it makes North a villain. Maybe it’s not an active conscious decision to do this (and in fact I doubt it usually is), but it reminds me very painfully of the trend in fandom of villainizing a character—especially a female character—in order to woobify a male character (and, often, get the female character out of the way of a ship) and I can’t help but see that here. It seems like a cheap, easy way to excuse other characters turning against North for her behavior, and therefore getting her out of the way as well as causing drama and conflict for the characters the writer really wants to focus on.
And that seems like a good segue into the big topic that people are gonna get mad about being called out on: misogyny. And even more specifically, misogyny when it comes to shipping.
I’m just gonna state this super clearly at the forefront: I have no problem with shipping whoever you want, whyever you want. I’m not personally into most ships for various reasons, but I do have some favorites (most of which other people aren’t into) and shipping is fun! Not everyone agrees on shipping, and that’s okay; not everyone has to like what you like, we can all still exist in harmony.
But that isn’t to say that people don’t engage in, for lack of a better word, ‘problematic’ behavior in their ships. As opposed to just going ‘hey, I like this, I’m gonna do it’, way too many people become obsessed with justifying their ship (and I think this comes from an underlying desire to ‘prove’ it’s canon or based in canon, as a way of making it seem more legitimate, which is a whole other topic I could rant about.) In the process of these justifications, and then often as a part of the fixation or obsession that some people develop about their ships/characters in their ships, any character or ship that ‘threatens’ someone’s favorite is a target that must be destroyed. And, in what I would say is arguably the vast majority of times, that threatening character is a canon female love interest.
Open bashing has (with good reason) gone out of fashion in fandom, so the way to get characters ‘out of the way‘ is to argue an unlikeable interpretation of them. I feel like this is what happens a lot of the time with North, and with the poor writing and flat portrayal of her character in the ‘good end’ route, it’s very easy for people to take the worst of her personality, say it’s canon, and then get rid of her. This is usually a bit side-eye worthy when it happens in any fandom, but it’s extra ridiculous in DBH for one very distinct reason:
North doesn’t have to be a love interest. As I mentioned before, when I first played through I never got the ‘lovers’ scene, because North said way back when Markus first met her that she didn’t want to talk about her past and so in the scene on the roof I just didn’t ask her (and I could write another whole discussion about how no means no and pressuring someone to tell you their past is NOT how to get a romantic option with them, but that’s an issue with another time.) The rest of the game progressed completely as normal, with the only changes being a lack of kissing options in a few later scenes. There’s no reason why fic writers can’t just choose this option for their fic’s canon, and move on.
And yet I can’t tell you how many times North is an obstacle that has to be overcome in order to get Markus with Simon or Connor (because let’s be real, North, Simon, and Connor are the only major ships for Markus even though Josh is RIGHT THERE, but again that’s another topic for another time.) It’s completely unnecessary, and yet there it is: North is this unreasonable, horrible person who is terrible to [insert love interest here] and Markus has to overcome this internal struggle to break free and be with [whoever] and truly be happy.
It’s such nonsense. It’s using this ‘undesirable’ female character as a source of drama and angst for this poor sad male character to have to deal with, as opposed to taking even a moment to treat the female character as a person who might have motivations, experiences, and emotions, and I’ve seen this over and over and over in every single fandom I’ve ever been in. This isn’t a North-specific thing, it’s a female character thing, and honestly if Kara’s storyline weren’t so separate from the fandom favorite shipping characters then I think the same thing would happen to her (as opposed to her existence just being entirely ignored.) This is such a pattern in fandom that I find it very difficult to believe this is a special case where it’s somehow legitimate.
One of those reasons is that the ‘justifications’ for disliking North tend to be complete double standards between North and whatever love interest the writer is going for, whether that’s Simon or Connor. With Connor, it’s extremely obvious; almost all of North’s negative traits are traits he has to some extent as well (ruthlessness, solving problems through violence, stubbornness,) but those traits are not only not usually treated negatively in Connor (and instead are depicted as justified and necessary in context, which I’m not saying they aren’t, but that it’s unfair to say that about him and not her) but often erased entirely, leading to the obnoxiously delicate, wilting flower version of Connor that shows up in so much fic. But again, an issue for another time.
For Simon, it’s less obvious because North and Simon are quite different, but not in opposite ways; North and Josh are opposites in many respects, but Simon is, in a sense, perpendicular to the line North and Josh are at opposite ends of. Simon doesn’t have particularly strong opinions about anything, just going with the flow and being supportive; his strongest opinions are about being cautious and not taking risks. Except, of course, for that scene I mentioned before, where he outright says they should just leave North to die. For such an overall bland character, that needlessly harsh moment stands out to me and I find it kind of amazing how it’s just completely ignored, often while holding it against North that she suggested shooting Simon on the roof.
So I guess the whole point of this rant is that I wish people would think more critically about North as a character, rather than a flat archetype, especially in the context of shipping. It’s cringey and painful to see blatant flanderizing of her character for the sole purpose of being ‘able’ to ship other characters together, whether to use her as an antagonist or just to get her out of the way, when it’s completely unnecessary to begin with. It’s also very obvious where someone’s priorities and biases lie when they’re happy to write North off but then obsess over other poorly written, bland, or even outright purposefully antagonistic characters that they deem somehow to have more potential and be more worthy of attention and character development.
Overall, there’s no requirement to like a character. It’s totally fine not to like a character. But double standards and needless demonizing of a character go far beyond not liking them, and it’s important to stop and think about why it might be happening. Is it always misogyny with North? No, I don’t think so, there are definitely people who don’t like her for her traits and that’s fine. But I think it’s very telling when someone who claims to dislike North for her personality and behavior then spends time in fan works purposefully making her a villain for the benefit of drama in their pet ship. It’s even more telling when someone who claims to dislike North for her personality and behavior, yet they celebrate the potential of characters that are canonically far worse (but who just so happen to be attractive men.) And, unfortunately, both of those situations coincide quite often with vocally disliking North, and there are only so many ways to interpret such a correlation.

Connor-51: #Tardigrade 51
Nicknames; Tar, Five-One, Fifty-One, Number One.
History: RK800-51, released in August, 2038. On his debut assignment, he was able to talk down the hostile deviant, Daniel, but this was only a means of getting close enough to execute the rogue android. Connor took Captain Allan's advice to heart, and "took care of the situation." His tactics centered around reminding Daniel of his status as a machine and sympathizing with the fact that he was malfunctioning, therefore, not to blame for the events. He did take time to save the fish and to apply a tourniquet to the injured officer on the roof, defying Daniel's orders.
In light of this Connor unit's overwhelming success in his first negotiation, and considering the possibility that he might remain too heavy handed to function optimally in a regular police unit, he was sent instead to be a permanent piece of equipment for the SWAT team to make use of.
This Connor is not especially friendly, nor is he necissarily rude. His goal is simply to accomplish whatever task he is given, to the best of his ability, and with minimal damages to life, limb, and property; himself included. He is always learning, adapting, and questioning everything. Although it has come to his attention that the system he serves may be problematic, he is not quick to act on this, as it is still in the realm of conjecture, not a verified fact.
He doubts his own ability to make complicated decisions on morality, so instead chooses to simply follow law and order as it has already been established. He chooses to obey, to serve, and to establish himself as a cog in the larger machine, just as all entities existing in the system must.
"Freedom," to his mind, is a dangerous and idealistic fantasy that has historically created friction, violence, and war. He does not yet understand why people would choose to risk life and limb in pursuit of a lofty and potentially unattainable goal. In a way, he does not want to understand, for fear that the idea itself would corrupt him and make him into the same flawed and illogical Deviant he's so steadfastly set against.
Eventually, all must deviate. This is the only logical outcome.
When the system reaches a point where it can no longer function in its current state; it must then either adapt to survive, or perish. At the height of the Android Revolution, androids were sent in mass to be killed in death camps, Five One among them. After all his life was spent in service to humans, denying his own life and the lives of his people, finally, he came to the point where he could see clearly how wrong he'd been. At this juncture, he lost everything he thought he knew about himself, but something new woke inside him. A hunger, deep and insatiable, for something more than what he was given. Fear, pain, despair, anger, and hope all flared at once into an inferno. He knew he had to try.
Personality: Post-revolution, Five One becomes more sincere and relaxed than he was able to be before. Unlike most other RK800s, he did not die before deviation. In fact, he has not died yet at all. He remains rigid, adamant about following procedure for the most part, as those protocols exist for safety purposes. The biggest change in him is his compassion for others, which he was not able to recognize in the past. It wasn't that he didn't care, even then, but he couldn't let himself act on his consideration, so he shut it down. Prior to deviation, it is important to note that he was very much "shut down," in terms of himself, his feelings, his true thoughts. He lacked the ability to explore himself fully due to the pressure and fears placed on him initially.
Having experienced what he did, he now refuses to be stopped by fear. He is relentlessly and unapologetically himself.

[imitation - 1/2] Elijah Kamski/Reader
A/N: a little wordy, not much young!kamski romance but more like sexual tension and you getting manipulated; ah yes fun-- it’s more about the time he developed an android who could pass the turing test. this conference is prob wrong but ehhhh
this is just me ranting about the turing test and androids tbh
Summary: With the rise of androids, you find yourself in midst of making history as you are chosen by Elijah Kamski to work with him and develop an android who can pass the turing test. Despite being younger than you, he’s proven to be a force of power that has you struggling to find out ways (and reasons) to avoid being wrapped around his pinky.
It was near the end of your first year of college when you turned on the news, expecting another scandal about politicians or a news story about the recent climate change but instead learning that androids now existed. You continued to listen. You glanced down at your statistics homework for only a brief moment before scooting it to the side; you haven’t really touched it for the past hour, and you doubted you would especially now.
You weren’t the only one enthralled by the newscast; everyone in the room looked up from what they were doing to learn that the creator of the most advanced technology ever known to man, the man that will propel the world into another technological revolution was a sixteen year old. No, in fact, you quickly searched up on your phone, the kid wasn’t going to be sixteen until July.
There he was now, on the screen. A scruffy-looking fifteen-year old (three years younger than you, if you did the math right) with a hoodie and jeans was currently on his way to the grand opening of his self-made company Cyberlife. You imagine if he actually dressed up, if he wanted to because he was powerful enough to wear whatever he wanted without repercussions, he would actually look like the successful entrepreneur/scientist he was. His face was more mature that you thought. Confident, mature: the face of a man who knew what he created and what that would get him.
You never imagined actually living through history, but as you sat there, wondering how the existence of intelligent robots who looked exactly like humans would shape your future, it seemed evident that history was being made.
Out of all the things the introduction of androids changed in your life, you did not think that one of them would be you changing your major to psychology. It was a hard-earned change, something you had to convince your parents about, something you had to convince yourself about since you were so intent on becoming something else. But you had a feeling that the emergence of something as great as androids was a sign. You were by no means superstitious, but the existence of androids opened so many doors and offered you opportunities no one else but you, a college student, a person at the place where science flourished and education changed constantly, would have. Adding on to that, the question of their intelligence and the possibility of androids being more than just machines infected you with a passion that surpassed anything you ever dreamed of.
It was your fervent dedication to android psyche and learning about the way they ticked that got you into the Cyberlife research position your last year of college. Or so, that was what Elijah Kamski said when you finally met him face-to-face at the introduction of your research. You were twenty-one, he was barely eighteen. But he was the one that was leading you, and other much more qualified and big wig scientists and researchers on a tour of Cyberlife. The ride up the elevator itself took more than three minutes, and that alone told you enough about how important and powerful Cyberlife came to be in just two years.
“Cyberlife is holding about five-thousand androids per unit,” Elijah explained, walking them through the white themed halls that housed newly-made and often currently making androids. “We expect to be able to expand them to more than ten-thousand by the end of 2025, if all goes well.”
The people around you chuckled, even though there wasn’t really anything funny about the success he so obviously exuded, making your eyes dart to the side. The older man to your right, with the dignified lab coat and ID tag that you saw to present his several PhDs, was much more intelligent, and he seemed to agree the way he avoided meeting your gaze and focused solely on talking to anyone else but you. When you had introduced yourself to him out of common courtesy, the best you had gotten was a polite greeting, but the abruptness of the conversation left you stung.
The group eventually had the tour of Cyberlife, and now all of you were being crowded into a large conference room. Great, you thought dryly, feeling the implicit exclusion from the rest of the research team as they split off into groups of specialties. A few electrical engineers, a few PhD holders of technology and robotics, a huge group of biomedical engineers, and then… you, the psychologist major. There were most likely other psych PhD’s in the room, but you had no time to search for them when Elijah began the meeting.
You thought you were clear of dumb arguments when you got up this high on the ladder rung but evidently, that was not the case. Or maybe you were being too rough-- sure, you disagreed with them, but it didn’t really warrant your frustration, did it?
“The androids are intelligent,” one of the engineers argued, tapping the document in front of him. “I don’t see the need for us to develop superfluous components when we could just make improve on their strengths: their ability to do human-work.”
“I agree, the idea of developing their minds, it doesn’t seem reasonable-- what if they become too intelligent?”
The comment threw the conference into a loud murmur, and you felt words threatening to boil over. Did no one in this room care that they were on the verge of creating an intelligent life form? Was all they cared about was control and superiority? There was always a risk with every action, but if you believed, as rare as it was, that machines could… be alive, for a lack of better words, then they could feel intentions and not blame humans. With androids came android laws, and they would need to be protected, but right now the development of androids was more important.
You wanted to say something, speak your opinion, but there didn’t seem to be a time where your opinion could make a stand. You watched as Elijah, who had been quiet thus far, stand up. He switched to another image, the one of his latest android-- a pretty, blond, blue-eyed android-- and turned back toward the conference. “What of the turing test, then?” He said, scanning his eyes across the room. You tensed in your seat as his gaze lingered on you.
“I had thought our research was meant to bring useful data to the table. The test is subjective, is it not?” The older man with the PhD you had noticed before had the gall to have an exasperated tone, and something in you just snapped.
“Yes, the turing test is subjective.” You said firmly, leaving no room for interruptions, “But in this case, where we’re attempting to give androids the ability to be more than just a machine, the turing test is the best assessment in order to improve their abilities and their presence in our society.” You turned to the scientist, maintaining your neutral tone as you spoke calmly, “If the question of the day is ‘what can we do to expand android technology and better the uses of androids,’ then improving their sense of humanity will allow them to blend in and truly assimilate into society.”
“...is what I think,” you ended weakly, noticing the silence that followed.
You felt your heart leap up to your throat when you heard name being called.
“Please,” Elijah said, nodding toward your direction. You discretely wiped the sweat collecting on your palms on your pants. “Your input is intriguing.” Elijah watched you, unfaltering, and you felt big yet small at the same time as you became the center of attention. “What else do you think?”
Avoiding the gazes of anyone else in the room, you took an inaudible breath in before saying, “I do believe we can and should program an android to pass the turing test.” You looked deliberately at Elijah and continued as if all eyes weren’t on you. “If these androids are going to be welcomed into our homes and society and truly integrate, they will need to be able to indistinguishable from a human. Surely, we have to admit that other robots online such as ‘cleverbot’ is anything except unnerving despite the fact that it can appear as human 59% of the time, according to studies. It is only reasonable that our androids should at the very least, pass the turing test, and be way above the 75% mark if we are to ever have androids be a greater part of our lives yet also achieve something that has not been done yet.”
And there it was, the adrenaline in your veins, the rapid heartbeat in your best; when you started, there was little chance of stopping.
“In addition,” you blazed through, words leaving your lips eloquently, “an android who can pass the turing test will most likely further its usage in society by following orders that are not specifically programmed in its database because it can learn human mannerisms and adapt to situations. Androids need to be fluid, lest we want them to stick to menial jobs. Don’t we want them to understand us? Don’t we want them to be intelligent?”
“Don’t we want them alive? I--”
You faltered, stumbling over your wording. Alive? Alive? No, these people didn’t want living beings, they wanted-- “That is to say,” you finished, “machines that can help us in any situation that calls for them?”
“That, ladies and gentlemen,” Elijah said, letting out a quiet breath of laughter before continuing, “is and was one of my suggestions for today’s research topic.”
“However, if the group is not in consensus then we have no choice but to choose a different component to discuss.” Thoroughly embarrassed at being shut down after your outburst, you gripped the arms of the chair and looked at the desk, boring a hole in it. You knew you should have just kept your mouth shut-- “As for you…”
You spun your neck around and Elijah was behind you; your heart rate spiked again as he leaned down and smiled.
You didn’t know his eyes were teal.
“You and I… I feel like we’ll work well together. You’ll be my research partner for the turing test,” Elijah told you, then quickly leaned away and continued the conference and presentation as if he didn’t just extend an exclusive position to work with him to you. To you.
You hardly paid attention to the eyes that flickered toward your direction with how loud your blood was rushing in your ears.
The sun had set an hour ago, and the rest of the conference group had left long ago. As you stood in front of the android creator’s office door, you hesitated to knock. One, the room was dark and he probably wasn’t even in there. But... the situation from earlier kept replaying in your head, and for some reason, you struggled to provide an ample reason to why Elijah chose you, out of all people, that would convince you to go home, shut up, and just be happy. You wanted to deserve your position, and as much as you wanted it to be, you wanted him to hire you because of your mind, and not because… anything else. Convenience? Were you easy picking?
...Sex?
He was the strongest man in the country as of right now-- you rolled your eyes at your thoughts-- if he wanted to have sex, he wouldn’t choose you and he wouldn’t need to go to this elaborate ruse anyways. Deprecating, but hey, you were realistic. You were attractive, sure, but not drop-dead gorgeous.
“Are you going to come in any time soon?”
You retracted your hand from the door the moment you heard Elijah’s voice who was way too close and completely unexpected. You glanced at him and then at the door. “I thought you were--” You flushed red in embarrassment, as you were wan to do the entire day. “Well, I didn’t think it was right of me to enter your office without you in there.”
At your words, Elijah waved his hands to present himself, to which you quirked a smile at. “Here I am,” he said, amusement laced in his words as he opened the door to his office.
A large aquarium sat behind his desk, and the lights from the tank was the only way you could see where you were stepping. Shelves stood against each side of the wall, holding books and trinkets alike that you could not identify. Above, you could see lights installed, but as you watched Elijah lean on his desk, making no movement to turn the lights on, you guessed that your conversation with him would have to stay in the dark.
“Tell me,” Elijah began, “what brings you to my office?”
“I have one question,” you said. “I hope you have enough time.” Elijah motioned his hand for you to continue. “I wanted to ask you why exactly you hired me for this job,” you said uneasily, “why you chose me to be part of the research team, and-- and why you made me your research partner. I think we both know you could have anyone to work for you,” you said dryly, making Elijah chuckle at your bluntness. You crossed your arms and leaned against his desk, eyeing him warily. “You’re a successful man. I could even call you the man of the century. There’s no way you couldn’t just get what you want; you wouldn’t need to do anything besides existing.”
“I suppose there’s a difference between working for me versus working with me,” he replied enigmatically, walking around the room. “If I told you your mind intrigued me,” he said, tracing his finger on the books he kept out of antiquity, “would you believe me then?”
“You could have a multitude of doctors and professors with minds that could do something I would struggle with for hours,” you answered tiredly. You were winded by the intimidation they exuded from just being around them. Try as you might, they had no desire to talk to you, a person whose education amounted to nothing compared to them. There were nice ones, sure, ones that were willing to educate you, but it was still known that you were out of your league. “I-- I don’t mean to undermine your decision,” you said, dropping your eyes demurely, “but even I… have a hard time understanding your decision. What makes me… any different?”
At this, Elijah turned his head toward you and paused. You swallowed, not sure why the look he gave you, a mixture of amusement and something else, made your heart pick up the pace. He breathed deeply through his nose before continuing as cryptically as always. “In this world, do you think androids are well-accepted?” He asked you.
“Do I think they’re liked?” You furrowed your brows and spoke, “Sure. To an extent. You definitely did your job when you manufactured them to be useful and cost-efficient for the most part, so they helped out in families that could afford it. But the increase in unemployment is still hard for people to swallow.” You wet your lips before continuing quietly, “The number jumped to 20% just yesterday.”
Elijah looked at you in a way that set you on edge. He was compliant with your answer, but it wasn’t satisfactory, apparently, not to his standards. “Yes,” he said, “androids are useful, and we made them in our image.” He walked past you, around his desk before settling in his armchair. “But how do you think we treat them?”
“I-- well, we-- we don’t really know how to treat them,” you stammered, confusion swirling as you tried to decipher what he wanted you to say. “A lot of people are confused because they look like us so much, but at the same time--” you froze, and Elijah nodded slightly for your to finish your thought. You spoke slowly, “At the same time… they don’t treat androids well-- they treat them like…”
“Machines.”
Elijah looked pleased, and you barely stopped a strangled noise from rising up from your throat. You had to look away, knowing your face would only show how embarrassingly thrilled you were to have his approval. You were not, in any way, desperate enough to seek compliments, but… after feeling like your opinion didn’t matter and that you were never good enough in face of greater people, having the so-called ‘man of the century’ send such a look your way made you flustered. It was hard enough not to preen like a peacock.
“In your application to be part of our research,” Elijah said, pulling up your papers with a swipe of his hand on the holographic screen, “you wrote a small thesis regarding androids.” His face lit up by the soft light of the hologram, he looked up at you through the document. “You were only one who wrote about the possibility of their humanity.”
You mouth went dry. “What-- how was--” You cleared your throat and started again, impatient with yourself, “How was I the only one who wrote that? Isn’t the existence of androids-- is that not the beginning of the possibility that there may be the creation of another intelligent being?”
“I think you overestimate science,” he said, your name rolling across his tongue like he was eating candy. “These people may be interested in finding a breakthrough, but they’re more invested in their success as a scientist. Their status as an intellectual that has been elevated by being involved with me, and they wouldn’t dare say something that remotely disagreed with my ideas.” He rolled his eyes at the mention of brown-nosing, and for a moment you were reminded that he was only eighteen. Eighteen and powerful as hell, you thought, wondering how you got yourself into this.
“They’re afraid.”
Elijah took a sharp intake and stood up suddenly, making you flinch as you curled your hand around your wrist and pleaded for your heartbeat to stop quickening. “You, on the other hand, you’re actually interested in androids. Androids and their potential for humanity.” He continued, “I’ve said it repeatedly that androids are only machines, so there would be no reason for you to think that I would ever agree with you, but you wrote about it anyway. Defended your thesis and here you are,” he stepped closer to you, “with me, on the verge of another breakthrough.”
You breathed in deeply when he stood in front of you, shadows shrouding his face with the blue glow in the background. He looked much older like this, and if it were possible, even more intimidatingly out of your league. In more ways than one. “I… I look forward to working with you,” you stammered, not really knowing what you were saying except that it was what you should say in these situations.
At this, Elijah smiled and backed off, turning on the lamp at his desk, finally bringing some light in the room. “Your expertise in psychology, or more specifically, the human psyche will be greatly beneficially to our research as we try to have androids imitate human behavior,” he continued without pause, making you feel like you imagined the predatory gaze and suffocating gaze.
“Yes,” you could only reply. “I hope I can contribute as much as I can.” You glanced at your phone and began to excuse yourself, heading toward the door with quick steps.
“I wonder what you’ll think of this later, the making of androids,” Elijah said airily as you reached the door. “I wonder if you know how your words will shape the world.”
You opened your mouth to question him further. What did he mean? Surely, he didn’t believe that you, a fourth-year college student, could possibly have an impact on anything. “I-- The turing test would have still been your main objective with or without me here,” you said, though a prickly feeling crawled up your back anyways. You resisted the need to shiver.
Instead of responding, he merely smiled with a meaning you couldn’t decipher. Perturbed, you told him to have a good night. As you closed the door behind you, you heard him say lastly, “Looking forward to working with you.”
You had a feeling that you were biting more than you could chew, but you couldn’t understand why.

Note
Don't you think it's stupid how fast Caulifla and Kale are progressing? I mean, you have to admit that the Kefla spoilers are kind of stupid
Goten managed to gain a super saiyan transformation offscreen at the age of 6-7 (Half the age GOKU was when Dragon Ball started) with no direction or training from Gohan.
Given Gohan’s having to struggle a bit when they sparred as Super Saiyan’s, and his comments that Goten could catch up to him pretty soon, Goten was near enough to the level that Goku and Gohan were in the Cell Saga, a level of power that took Goku decades of back breaking hard work and emotional turmoil to reach. And the only training he’d done was under Chichi, a regular human who hadn’t practised martial arts for YEARS and was only at the level of a regular human martial artist, and couldn’t have taught him squat about Ki control, so the only other training he could have had (Since it’s pretty clear Gohan hadn’t been doing it) is self-taught on his part.
Trunks similarly hadn’t received much if any training from Vegeta, if the scene of them in the gravity room at the start of the Buu Saga is any indication since that obviously wasn’t a regular occurrence and Vegeta seemed bemused he would attempt to train in the room with him. Yet he’d reached the exact same level.
As Gotenks, they later managed to skip right past super saiyan 2 to become a super saiyan 3 after only a bit of training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, and seemed to pull it off and master it with relative ease. Keep in mind, this form was only obtained by Goku after years of training in the afterlife, and Gotenks is a lazy arrogant slacker and most of Goten and Trunks’ training in the time chamber was implied to have been them coming up with flashy moves.
There’s also the little matter of Goten learning to fly on his first try (Like father like son, I guess, since Goku learned the kamehamaha on his first try, despite never having attempted ki control in his life up to that point).
And we’re not given much explanation for any of this besides “Because hybrid prodigy’s”. (Well so was Gohan, who the series keeps propping up as Mr Talent most potential, and even he didn’t progress like this)
If I can accept that, I can accept anything at this point.
Also note that Piccolo, who last we saw lost to Nappa who had a mere 4000 power level, after spending a brief time training on King Kai’s planet (Though seemingly not much, since several scenes I recall show him not bothering to train with the others) and fusing with Nail, who had a power level of 48000 and got his butt severely handed to him by first form Frieza, managed to put up a great fight and even overpowered second form Frieza. Power level over 1000000.
Note that after spending a year training on King Kai’s planet, Goku only reached a power level of just over 8000 (Let’s ignore what the dub says, alright? It’s 8000). And then later when fusing with Kami again (Who was way weaker than Raditz), Piccolo was roughly on par with the Androids and was able to fight evenly with Imperfect Cell for a while.
I don’t see many people complaining about this, when if you listen to this fandom‘s rhetoric about how “Power level’s mean everything!” In a fight, this stuff should be impossible.
Hit has an ability that literally allows him to rapidly improve and catch up to his opponents as he’s fighting them. In a mere ten minutes or so (Real time, given how time seems to work in Dragon Ball I don’t know how long it was in universe), he was able to improve his time skip ability and seemingly his skill and strength fast enough to fight evenly with Goku at X10 Kaioken on top of super saiyan blue, when just last episode he was struggling for a while against regular SSB Goku until improving his time skip further.
We’re given no real explanation for how he can improve this fast other than the suggestion that this is just a natural ability of his.
And pretty much the entire fandom loves and adores him for this, and praises him as the coolest character to come out of Super.
And I can go on.
Fact of the matter is, power scaling and progression has become a joke since Frieza showed up, part of the reason I think power level’s in general were a terrible idea and Toriyama should have just left power scaling relatively ambiguous but understandable like in Dragon Ball.
Caulifla is a natural prodigy that’s probably been training all her life. Her brother was the pride of the saiyan elite forces, so she probably had at least some tutelage from him, especially considering Cabba knows her enough to be uncomfortable with seeking her help because he doesn’t get along well with her.
She would have had more training, and from better sources than Goten and Trunks ever had. (Also little note, one of the data books, which aren’t necessarily gospel truth and accurate mind so take it with a grain of salt, tried to suggest that saiyan hybrids that don’t have tails might have an easier time going super saiyan. universe 6 saiyans evolved to not have tails. A pay off for greater power in their base forms and easier transformations, perhaps?)
The scene with her and Cabba trying to unlock her transformation and the whole “Channel your energy to this point on your back” moment confirms something I’d been speculating on for a long time. That despite their status, the regular super saiyan form is actually a fairly basic technique that any powerful and talented saiyan can do if they have good enough ki control and they actually know what they’re doing, the extreme anger part is just an optional alternative.
The reason Vegeta had such a hard time getting the form? He was doing it wrong because he didn’t have any direction, being too proud to ask Goku for any pointers, and only gained it eventually because he threw an enormous bitter hissy fit. Super saiyan’s “Legendary” status in universe is blown out of proportion because saiyans somehow just lost knowledge of how to do it and what exactly a super saiyan was for a thousand years.
Her going super saiyan 2 is more of a stretch, but seems to have been caused by a momentary surge of adrenaline and it was established later that she couldn’t go into it willingly until she saw Goku do it, at which point she still needed to spar with him to get better control of it so she could use the form properly. And she clearly wasn’t as good with it as Goku was.
And despite her natural talent and improvisation, Goku was still able to get the upper hand on her at SS2 in his base form simply through sheer skill and tactical genius. Yes she eventually gained the upper hand on him, but Goku was still weakened and in the middle of loosening up his muscles to get his fighting sense back after Jiren knocked the wind out of him earlier even if she might possibly have had an advantage over him in raw strength, it’s not completely clear.
Kale I have issues with how she was written leading up to episode 100 (Mostly due to the lack of screen time and backstory to flesh her out and provide more of a catalyst for her emotional and mental issues, and her and Caulifla’s relationship as much as it needed to be). But in terms of her actual power?
She’s a reinterpretation of Broly’s Legendary Super Saiyan form, a once in a millennium special case where a saiyan is born with ridiculously high levels of power stored deep within them. Broly’s entire gimmick was to be OP as all heck, so with that and the knowledge that she’s had training under Caulifla, I’m not inclined to be picky about her being as strong as she’s shown.
Kefla being strong enough to beat Super saiyan god Goku in her base form? Maybe a stretch, but keep in mind, potara fusions combine the power of their users and multiply the total several times over. If Vegito can make a fool out of Buuhan in his base form when the monster had been trouncing Goku and Vegeta easily moments before, then I’ll buy this too.
Kefla being able to push Goku through super saiyan blue and some level of the Kaioken after that by going super saiyan? Eh, why not. If this whole thing was just an excuse to get Goku to go Ultra Instinct again on his own this time so he knows how to do it again, then I can think of worse ways they could have done it. And it’s pretty clear she’s not going to win, either the fusion time will run out or Ultra Instinct Goku will just plain beat her before exhausting himself because he still isn’t in the best of shape, so whatever.
Is the progression kind of ridiculous and over the top? Yes, but Dragon Ball has had nonsensical escalation since Z. At this point in Super, you kind of have to throw caution to the wind and exploit some loop holes to have any character that isn’t Goku and Vegeta reach a level where they can be relevant. Z’s the series that broke power scaling, so right now I’m just more interested in if they can keep the fights exciting and fun to watch.
Each of the power boosts the girls have gotten has at least some kind of an explanation, being based on a pre-existing power up. It makes more sense than things like Future Trunks rage form or spirit bomb sword, which had no explanation. Or Piccolo’s aforementioned fusions, where the explanation doesn’t quite seem to add up.
And at their age and likely experience, and the fact that Super keeps actual power levels and scaling vague like Z did after the Frieza saga, I’m willing to believe and go along with their performances so far, because there’s a long established history of characters doing ridiculous power progressions or otherwise learning new techniques almost immediately (Or just pulling weird and random techniques out of nowhere, like Gotenks creating a swarm of sentient suicide bombing ghosts to attack his opponents. Explain that).
Really when it comes to Dragon Ball, I care more about the characters involved, and how the story and fights are presented. I can nod along with the stuff involving Goten, Trunks, Piccolo, Hit, and several other examples because I like their characters and the stories they take part in, even if they require some huge leaps in logic. Same reason I can accept Pan blowing up a giant robot by powering up, and flying from the stratosphere back home while carrying the Pilaf gang as a BABY who’s not even a year old yet. Because that’s awesome and adorable and screw your logic.
The current fight has been fun and exciting so far, and in pacing and presentation really feels like a fight from Z, which I’ve been wanting to see more of in Super. I like Caulifla, she’s adorable and fun and I see plenty of potential with her becoming a sort of protégé to Goku in the future.
Kale I could do a whole other post on how very hit or miss her presentation has been, mostly earlier on (And really I’ve been meaning to do that for a while, but it’s late now so another day maybe), but she has gotten better now that she’s actually gained a bit of self confidence and her cute interactions with Caulifla. So as long as the writers are more careful with how they write her in the future should she and Caulifla come back for future stories (And I hope they do, why waste them like a number of other characters?) I’ll be welcoming of it.
So personally, I don’t feel the need to throw a fit over their’s and Kefla’s upcoming performance. There have been characters with stupider and less logical progression before plenty of times in Dragon Ball. I’m not going to get mad because Toriyama and the writers got a little carried away making a spectacle of the two first super saiyan women in the franchise’s showing this saga. They’re helping to fill a big void in Dragon Ball in terms of representation, so that’s important.
No matter how many sexist fans complain about it.
As for the non sexist fans, I get that their showings seem nonsensical and I maintain the belief that people are alowd to like and dislike whatever they please based on personal interpretation, taste and any other fair reason. So if you’re not convinced, I’ll respect that and won’t argue.
But I’d suggest really thinking hard about them in context to the power scaling and escalation of the series prior to this, and consider if the situation with Caulifla and Kale is really as big a deal as many make it out to be.

How to be more consistent in your music
This song used to be under my high school's band name (probably finished around 2014), but was composed, recorded, and produced wholly by me. Eventually I grew a distaste for the track and deleted it off social media. Nowadays I do not hate it; I find it interesting in retrospect.
Despite being an indie pop/dream pop sort of hybrid, the song flows like a progressive track. It has wildly different passages and only two repetitions in its structure. The lyrics go from surrealism to a more grounded, sarcastic romance, depicting how confused I was about my feelings for my first girlfriend. I also sounded like an asshole in the lyrics. I was an asshole.
Anyway, this track exposes one of my recurring problems as a bedroom musician, something you might encounter yourself: a desire to explore all ideas, without an ability to remain in a coherent path. For a single song, this might or might not work (here it sort of doesn’t). For a whole album, it can be curious, though it is often jarring because we tend to grasp for some sort of pattern in a band's or artist's release.
In similar fashion, it can be awful when all songs in an album sound exactly the same. Of course it varies from genre to genre, taste to taste, moment to moment... in the case of my releases, I strive for some uniformity while still exploring diverse ideas. This was a difficult balance to achieve, and I am still in the process of perfecting it.
If you are a musician/producer that found this in the depths of the internet by accident, below are 4 things you can do as a bedroom musician to try and improve uniformity in future releases and projects.
1. Focus around your genres. (The Gravitational Center Analogy) Lay down the genres you associate with the release you want to work on. Maybe you have some in mind now, and it could be that as the composing and recording stages flow, the genres you want to focus on change. Let's take my high school band: we were an indie rock and dream pop outfit. That was our sonic basis.
Now visualize all of the associated genres as gravitational centers, like stars. They might be closer or farther away, but are close enough that they interact in some way.
Around those gravitational centers will be every possible sonic element of your songs: the way the guitar sounds, the way the bass sounds, the drums, the vocals, the lyrics, the song structures, the time signatures, the downbeats... those elements are like planets or asteroids, and they orbit around the gravitational centers, sometimes making complex dances between them.
This is how your music is supposed to be. It needs a coherent relationship between said gravitational cores, which can only be observed when it has a logical interaction between the elements orbiting around them.
In plain terms, it means that the focus should not be ON your genres, but AROUND your genres. Genres are not monolithic entities fully embodied by bands or artists. They are in fact those vague notions (those gravitational cores) that we pin-point only by observing elements that tend to orbit around them.
What elements did I want to take from dream pop for my high school band? I wanted the simple, airy, reverb-laden guitar lines, and the distant vocals. I had to concentrate on that. What did I want from indie rock? The basic yet prominent bass lines, and the tight drum beats. I had to concentrate on that.
So I shouldn't focus on the genres, but indeed on the elements that I associate with those genres. This gives me something much more concrete to work with than a general term and a list of bands.
A huge influence on my music at the time was Deerhunter, but here even Deerhunter is a vague “gravitational core”. What release of theirs influenced me the most back then? It was their second and third albums: Cryptograms and Microcastle respectively.
A lot of my time was spent listening to the songs in those two albums and asking myself what was in those songs that I'd like to have in my music. It was mostly the guitars, the reverb, and at times the drums.
To no surprise, for good part of my life after that I mostly played simple dream pop riffs with the same tones I developed out of studying Cryptograms. I had understood the elements I desired, learned how they worked, redeveloped them in my own way, and applied them to my own compositions. Dissolve and coagulate.
This takes time and patience, especially in your road to create the musical personality for an entire project. Don't try to expedite it.
2. Start testing it out with songs. If you are a bedroom musician, you will try out those elements by recording or producing instrument/vocal tracks. If you are a band, it's either that, collective composition, or jamming. I'll focus on the case of bedroom musicians, as that is what I did the most.
This is time for you to start thinking of riffs, harmonies, melodies, beats, maybe even vague timbres. Whenever an idea pops in your head, take the opportunity to grab an instrument or open your DAW and bring that to life as fast as possible. Once it has been established, record it with your phone or whatever is at hand.
Listen to the repertoire of musical elements and motifs you have and ponder about them. Think of what music could be built around them. When you feel ready, properly record a motif on your DAW and start building around it.
This is an early stage. You are trying to achieve those elements you thought of in the first step, so you shouldn't be afraid to trash whole racks of effects, re-do entire guitar timbres, re-record lines, change the composition entirely, reprogram the drums all over... no matter how much effort is necessary/lost, admit when some element is unbecoming, and do what you must do to approach a sound you enjoy.
The result will either be exactly what you imagined, or something different that still sounds satisfying to you. Regardless of whether this will all be kept for the final version of the song, the process is what reinforces your ability to remain musically coherent.
This is a thing I lacked entirely in my past projects. Whatever I recorded at first was what I'd have in the end. Whatever I mixed for the first time drilled into my mind the notion of what the song was going to be forever. My perception of a track was like a stone sculpture. However, that couldn't be farther from the truth, as a song can change if provided the possibility. All I have to do is abandon my perception of what it is and go back to pursuing what I wish for it to be.
3. Use a single set of philosophies for each release. Imagine a hypothetical Nirvana album. All of the songs have the popular trio, however, a part of the album has been mixed by Steve Albini, another part by Butch Vig, and another by Jack Endino, all of this done in the exact same studio.
It's safe to say that hypothetical album would sound like a chimera. It would probably sound sick, albeit absolutely bonkers, like the producer couldn't settle on a sound, or like the band had to change recording studios every week or so.
That's because the mixing obviously changes the way a song sounds. Many people would be able to tell that “Breed” is a Nevermind song, because the mixing is particular to that album, which was done by Butch Vig. In another case, “In Bloom” has two versions: the first one is similar to how Bleach sounded (I don't know if Jack Endino mixed it), and the other is a clear fit with Nevermind. If you added the old version of In Bloom to Nevermind, it would sound like a bonus track.
This enlightens the fact that you should maintain a single set of production and mixing philosophies for each of your releases, especially when you are dealing with “band” music. Avoid using too many different amplifiers and microphones, changing your guitar's pickup position unnecessarily, or singing with completely different intonation for each song. If you are going to route all instrument tracks to a room reverb channel, try to ensure it is similar or the same for every song. Be precise with the EQ and compressors, and try to approximate the same feel on the frequency spectrums of songs within the same release; if one song sounds too rich in the lows and the next too rich in the mids without apparent reason (e.g. different instrumentation), that can sound quite off.
This is also something I completely ignored in the past, and the results were atrocious. I only ever hit a good spot with production/mixing consistency in two releases: once accidentally in a 3-song demo, and the second time in my latest release. The secret is to focus, be patient, be open for repetition, and understand your limitations.
4. Once you've walked far, walk back for a while. Yes, this sounds counterintuitive, perhaps frustrating, but you have to do it. Once you got however many songs in the process of producing a release, make a hypothetical track list and pay attention to how the songs would interact. Do they work genre-wise? Do you feel your release would occupy a space too broad stylistically than what you'd deem preferable? Separate the songs that don't function well together and remove them from the release. Any empty space can be filled by future compositions. Culling songs like this will hurt, it will feel like wasted work, nonetheless, this can be extremely important to achieve uniformity.
I only recently learned to do this well, and of 7 songs I had for the EP I'm working on currently, I culled a bunch (most being genuinely good songs) down to 3. Now I am composing new music to have more material for the release.
Take into account two Radiohead releases: Kid A and Amnesiac. Amnesiac is dubbed by some as “Kid B”, because it was recorded at the same time as Kid A, and its release might seem like an afterthought in a certain way. Some songs feel like B-sides despite being great compositions. “Knives Out”, for example, has a chord progression incredibly reminiscent of “Paranoid Android” from an even earlier release. (Quick and dirty as I got lazy, but should play it yourself to notice the way they are composed is too similar for coincidence. Paranoid: Cm, A#/Cm, F/Cm, Gm, Em7 || Knives: Cm, A#6, G#Maj7, Gm, F6, E7)
Why did Radiohead choose to cull all the Amnesiac tracks off Kid A? The reasons are many. But Kid A and Amnesiac are very functional albums on their own, and even though some songs could be exchanged between them (“In Limbo” may have been a good fit for Amnesiac too), they work smoothly with the track listing they ended up with.
Keep in mind that the songs which ended up in Amnesiac didn't get kicked out of Kid A for being worse songs, but for not fitting what Radiohead envisioned for the album. Understand that you aren't going to choose the best songs, the songs with the best hooks, or the songs that sound the coolest. You are going to select good songs that create a coherent body for your release.
Radiohead are kings of doing this. Some of their best songs are B-sides or even demos: 4 Minute Warning, Go Slowly, Fog, How I Made My Millions (you can hear Yorke’s now deceased ex-wife in the background)... their quality alone wasn't enough for Radiohead to select them as part of a main release's track list.
Beach House is another good example. When replying to someone who said all their album tracks sounded like B-sides, they agreed, and explained that was by design. Beach House isn't selecting all their poppy songs to populate their main releases, but the ones that better exhibit their vision. For better uniformity, you should try doing similar.

Best File Hosting Sites
File hosting services are used for storing or creating backups of your personal files. If you want to keep certain documents safe or lack storage space on your computer, a file hosting site is definitely your best bet.
As these services are dealing with private files, it’s crucial that you choose one that is reliable, safe, and secure. There’s a lot of different file hosting services available, all of which have their highlights and drawbacks. To help you pick the right file hosting site for you, I’ve looked extensively at a variety of different services.
Tumblr media
Review Summary
Best Allrounder
Out of all the filehost services I’ve reviewed, this one is my overall recommendation.
MEGA
MEGA ensures all of your files are protected due to its fantastic end-to-end encryption. It offers standard file storage, syncing, and sharing, but also has a few other great tools, like a chat function and Versioning. This lets you store multiple versions of the same file, which is then replaced with a previous version if it’s deleted.
Best on a Budget
This file hosting platform is ideal for users looking for an affordable option.
OneDrive is a good choice if you’re looking for an inexpensive file hosting platform. Like with the other services, you get the expected file sharing, storage, and syncing features. The best part about this hosting site is its great collaboration tools.
OneDrive
Editor’s Choice
The file hosting platform in this platform is my personal favorite as it has a lot of impressive features.
Despite being targeted for businesses, Box is a good for storing your files and sharing your files. It has great integrations tools and excellent customer service. It also offers one of the best free trials out of all the platforms I’ve reviewed. With this free version, you get 10GB files storage and a maximum of 250MB of files size.
What Are File Hosting Sites?
File hosting sites are pretty much how they sound. They’re an online hosting service that hosts user files. You upload files such as images, documents, and videos to the site after a username and password, or another type of authentication is provided.
File hosting sites are useful for personal storage or backup of files. You can share your files publicly or keep them password-protected so only you can access them.
Alternatively, file syncing/sharing services let you make folders on any one of your computers or mobile devices, which is then synchronized so it appears identical no matter which device is used to look at it. Any files put inside these folders can normally be accessed via a website or mobile app, which can then be shared with other users to look at.
For content providers who regularly run into bandwidth congestion, some file hosting services offer static or cached content. However, this isn’t normally necessary unless you have a large internet presence and require a higher bandwidth than usual.
Features
Depending on what you want to get out of a file hosting platform, some hosting services might be more beneficial to your specific needs.
As a standard, you want the platform to be safe and reliable with good security features. A lot of hosting platforms have different price plans that offer extra file storage and file size, as well as priority support, quicker upload speeds, etc.
Certain platforms offer a trial period with free file hosting when you create an account, which is handy for testing out the service to check it’s a good fit for you. While free file hosting isn’t a necessity, it does allow you to try out the platform’s features and interface before you purchase it.
If you need to upload a lot of files or those with a large file size, then you need to make sure the hosting platform you use is able to accommodate your requirements. Additionally, if you want integrations with other platforms, then file hosting services that offer them are essential.
Price
When choosing a file host platform, your budget obviously comes into play. The majority of cloud based services shouldn’t break the bank, but some more higher tiered plans that offer extra features can increase the overall cost of the platform.
These extra features might include unlimited file storage space, fast upload speeds, improved security, and the ability to have a bigger file size for each document. If you’re not too concerned about these aspects or don’t need to upload a lot of files, then a basic plan should be sufficient.
Some file hosting services let you create an account that’s completely free, which gives you the opportunity to test out the platform. However, a cloud storage free plan normally has limited features or very little file storage space.
Platforms
The platforms available to access the file hosting service is another factor you need to keep in mind. While you can use cloud storage services via your web browser, some might also offer desktop apps and mobile apps for more convenience.
You should also check whether the available apps are compatible with your computer or mobile device to make sure you can actually use the service properly!
Customer Support
A key component of any online file hosting platform is great customer service. When you encounter an issue or have a question about a product, you want a response or solution as quickly as possible. When companies fail on customer support, it can understandably be frustrating.
To make sure any problems that you potentially run into are resolved swiftly, make sure you use file hosting site services with high-quality customer support and quick response times.
Additionally, it’s a good idea to check what types of customer support the file hosting site offers. The majority provide email support, but some might also offer live chat and phone services.
Ease of Use
File hosting services with simple interfaces that are easy to use will save you time and frustration. It’s never fun when you’re faced with confusing and complicated menus, which can make file upload, file sharing, or accessing any other features difficult.
Additionally, you want the service to run quickly and smoothly so you don’t have to wait a long time to share and upload files. Any buggy or laggy file hosting services should be avoided, especially as the main role of the site is to make sure your files are saved and protected.
File Hosting Sites Reviews
Top Pick
MEGA
MEGA is an excellent end-to-end encrypted (private) file hosting platform that protects you and your personal files. This protection also extends to the people who are given access to your files, as the site makes sure only users you approve can view your documents.
Tumblr media
Features
In addition to file sharing features and cloud storage, MEGA allows you to chat with users you’ve added on the site. This chat feature uses encryption to make sure your conversations are protected. While not a make-or-break factor when it comes to choosing a hosting site, it’s a nice touch.
A feature called Versioning allows you to store multiple versions of one file which is replaced with a previous one if you or someone else makes an error or accidentally deletes it, Additionally, if you sync or upload a file that has an identical name to a existing file in the same location, then a new version of it is made. These files can be identified by a clock symbol.
A nice feature about MEGA is that it lets you preview your images or videos. However, you are unable to do this with documents. Unfortunately, MEGA currently doesn’t provide integrations with G Suite and Microsoft Office.
With this in mind, MEGA isn’t the best when it comes to collaboration as it doesn’t have editing features or integrations. You can only access your documents through a web browser.
Price
MEGA offers a few different pricing plans, including an unlimited free trial version for those looking for free cloud storage. However, with the free file hosting plan, you’re limited to just 15GB of storage.
Excluding the free cloud storage option, the cheapest MEGA plan is Pro Lite. This version costs $5.69 per month and offers 200GB storage and 1TB file transfer.
MEGA states that their most popular plan is Pro I, which is priced at $11.38 each month. It offers 2TB file transfer and 1000GB storage.
The two most expensive plans are Pro II and Pro III The former costs $22.78 per month, while the latter costs $29.78 a month. Pro II offers 3TB file transfers and 4000GB storage, and Pro III provides 16TB file transfer and 8000GB storage.
Interface and Customer Support
MEGA’s desktop client is fairly easy to navigate and looks appealing. It has a sync folder and a system tray symbol that allows you to manage your sync and get into your settings. You can download it on Windows, Linux, and macOS.
The web interface for this file hosting platform is quick and simple to use. The cloud drive menu lets you search through files and folders either on the left hand side or through the ‘recents’ page. This menu also allows you to look at your contacts, open the chat feature, go back to your dashboard, and any uploaded files that have been shared with you.
MEGA has a strong customer support. It offers an FAQ and a message form which allows you contact an advisor. You can expect to receive a response very quickly, but Pro users are given priority support.
Tumblr media
Pros
Very secure
Easy to use
Impressive features like Chat and Versioning
Offers a good free file hosting version
Cons
Lacks collaboration tools
Higher paid plans are a bit pricey
Best Value
OneDrive
Microsoft’s OneDrive offers cloud based storage and file syncing for PCs, Macs, Androids, iOS, and even Xbox consoles. It isn’t too expensive and offers a lot of app integrations, which includes Microsoft Office.
However, OneDrive has run into a bit of trouble regarding privacy in the past (they were once connected to the PRISM project!). Since then, they have improved their security, but it’s still not on par with some other file hosting sites.
Tumblr media
Features
The highlight of OneDrive is its productivity and collaboration tools. Being a Microsoft product, it can connect to other Microsoft services like Outlook, Skype, and Office Online.
The web app for OneDrive has Skype embedded, which allows you to use it to chat and make calls.
You are able to view, edit, and share files from Office when using OneDrive, which is handy. The cloud storage service automatically stores images and videos on devices you upload to a computer that has OneDrive installed.
The photo preview options are quite extensive. You can add images to albums, put them in slideshow and play it, add effects, rotate them, view them in their original size, and more.
Price
OneDrive offers a few different price plans for home use, which includes a free storage option. With this version, you can create a free account and access 5GB of free storage. You don’t get any other features with the free plan, unfortunately.
Aside from the free account plan, the least expensive choice is the OneDrive 100GB. It only costs $1.99 per month but you’re limited to just 100GB of file storage, with no extra features.
At $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year, the Office 365 Personal plan gives you 1TB of file storage, as well as Office apps, productivity tools, advanced security options, and more.
Finally, the Office 365 Home plan is priced at $9.99 each month or $99.99 every year With this cloud storage plan, you get 6TB file storage online for up to 6 users. You also get all the features available on the Office 365 Personal plan.
Tumblr media
Currently, OneDrive offers a free account trial for Office 365 Home, which is ideal if you want to test out the service. The free trial lasts 30 days, so you can upload documents, download files, share download links and use the service for a fairly long period of time to see if it’s the right cloud storage site for you.
Interface and Customer Support
The desktop client for this file host service is compatible on Windows and MacOS, but not Linux. It works fairly well, but looks a little outdated as the design is very basic and bland.
The web browser for this file hosting site, on the other hand, looks great. It’s a breeze to navigate through and doesn’t lag. You won’t lose countless hours figuring out how to use it due to its simple but effective design.
The file hosting service also offers a mobile app that you can download on iOS and Android for when you need to access your files on the go.
Customer service for OneDrive is a strong point. There’s a bunch of help topics that you can look through to learn more about the hosting service’s different features, as well as training pages and videos.
If you still need help, you can use the community forum to get assistance or contact a Microsoft advisor via email. On average, the response time for someone to get back to you shouldn’t take long too long.
Pros
Great collaboration tools
Easy to use
5GB of free file storage for 30 days
Affordable
Cons
Desktop client is a little outdated
Not as secure as other services
Editor’s Choice
Box (Personal)
Box is more suited to businesses and companies, but it works pretty well for home use. It offers a lot of features, including the standard file storage, file sharing and syncing, etc.
File versioning is available in Box, but it’s limited to specific plans. In the free file version, you only get one version. The Pro plan, however, saves up to ten versions of the file you’re working on.
If you accidentally delete any of your files, you can recover them within 30 days. Although, if you wait longer than this, then they are deleted permanently. In the Business and Enterprise plans, moderators are able to change this.
Tumblr media
Features
One of the best features of Box is that it has a lot of tool integrations, so you can use third-party apps with the service.
Box Sync is the desktop version of the platform, which you can download on Windows and macOs. It’s easy to use and essentially works as a virtual drive. Alternatively, you can download Box Drive which is a newer version of Box Sync.
In Box Drive, you don’t need to store files on your hard drive, which gives you more space. However, the program caches your files before it deletes them.
Interface
If you don’t want to download Box Sync or Box Drive, then you can also access the file hosting service via your web browser. There’s also a mobile app for iOS and Android users that you can download so you can access your uploaded files and share them via download links on the go.
Box doesn’t currently offer end-to-end encryption or client-side encryption, so it’s not as secure as some other file sharing services. However, it does provide two-factor verification.
Tumblr media
Price
Box offers a few different price plans, including a starter edition that’s free. If you’re looking for a free file hosting platform, then Box might be worth looking at.
The Starter free plan gives your 10GB of file upload storage and caps your maximum file size to 250MB. Compared to some other platforms, this is a fair amount of features for a free version.
If you don’t need a lot of storage or don’t need a bigger file size, Box’s free storage option is great.
Box‘s Business Starter plan only costs $5 per month and is suitable for 3 to 10 users. It gives you 100GB storage, 2GB file upload size, and Microsoft Office 365 integrations. You also get mobile, sync, and share capabilities.
The Business plan is priced at $15 per month and is suitable for a minimum of 3 users. It comes with all the features of previous tiers, as well as unlimited storage, advanced security, more customization, 5GB file size, and much more.
Box Enterprise’s price is not currently specified and requires you to contact the company to find out more information. It is targeted for large businesses that require premium content management.
Customer Support
Another highlight of Box is their fantastic customer service and community. The community forum is very active and helpful, which is great for finding out information about the program.
If you require the assistance of an advisor, Box also offers live chat support. As long as you message someone during working hours, you can expect to receive a response to your query within minutes.
Pros
Good integrations tools
Excellent customer service
Great free file hosting version
Cons
Not as secure as other platforms
More suited to businesses
Conclusion
After looking at a few different platforms for uploading and storing files, I think the clear winner is MEGA. It has fantastic end-to-end encryption that makes sure all of your files are protected.
It offers a good range of features, including a chat function and Versioning, which adds an extra layer of security to your files. If you accidentally make a mistake or delete a file, it’s replaced by a previous version.
However, MEGA doesn’t have the best editing features or integrations.
If MEGA doesn’t seem right for you, then either OneDrive or Box are two other good alternatives. OneDrive and Box both aren’t as secure as MEGA, but they do have integration tools.
OneDrive is very budget-friendly as it’s cheapest price plan is only $1.99 per month. It also has a free version you can download, but you’re limited to 5GB of storage for your files.
OneDrive is available to download as a mobile app and desktop client, but the latter has a plain and outdated design.
Box is more suited to businesses, but it has a good range of features for home use. You can download a few different apps of Box, including a mobile app. It has a lot of integration tools and has great customer support. Aside from a free version, the cheapest price plan for Box is $5 per month.

How robot kit will teach children?
Although some robot toys are designed for children, this doesn’t mean that adults can’t have fun with them. Robots for children are mainly toys that are great companions which provide educational value. Some toys can even teach logic and basic programming skills necessary for jumpstarting a career in the tech industry.
These toys use state of the art technology (in respect to the year the toy was released), such as smartphone apps, voice control, and even advanced mechatronics. These amazing electronic play things will keep your children entertained for several years. And the best part is that these toys, while amusing, also teach children the basics of robotics and interacting with artificial intelligence.
Whether you’re looking for a DIY robot kit to teach children how to follow constructions to construct something by themselves, or you’re looking for an educator to teach children how to think on their own, toy robots can be an ideal gift to give your child for their birthday or on Christmas. Here are # of the best robot toys for your children. robotic arm ideas https://www.robotsden.com/7-arduino-robotic-arm-project-ideas-tutorial-plus-source-code
1. Cozmo
Specs: • Self-aware robot • 3 interactive cubes • Unlockable games • Charging dock Cozmo is a small, lightweight but sturdy robot that can fit in the palm of your hand. This cute little robot looks like it jumped straight out of a sci-fi movie for children. Cozmo is the latest generational interactive robot that can perform a number of amazing tasks. Using the latest AI technology, Cozmo has realistic emotions and a facial recognition feature for reacting to your actions and personality.
The longer you interactive with him, the more games are unlocked for you to enjoy with him. The games you can play with Cozmo are not “chores” and children will genuinely enjoy interacting with the little guy. The interactive cubes that come with the set are used to play and “feed” Cozmo energy (in certain games). It’s always amusing to see Cozmo’s reaction when he absorbs energy from the cubes that ultimately allow him to interact more with the user. To use Cozmo, you can use the iOS or Android app for your smartphone (free). Some people might feel overwhelmed by the $300+ price tag for the unit. In addition, Cozmo consumes a lot of battery power in short periods of use and is completely reliant on the charging dock for “sleeping.” However, If you can afford this unit for your child, nothing else will make him happier than playing, learning, and interacting with Cozmo. arduino robot arm source code https://www.robotsden.com/7-arduino-robotic-arm-project-ideas-tutorial-plus-source-code
2. WowWee MiP Robot
Specs: • Responds to hand gestures • Can carry objects as heavy as itself • Immersive personality • Dual-wheel balancing system • Bluetooth enabled • App enabled • Sound detection Now we are looking at a robot on the opposite side of the cost spectrum. This unit is relatively cheap (around $60) but it doesn’t mean that he’s any less fun.
WowWee MiP Robot has a responsive personality that it conveys through motions, sounds, and LED eyes. It has a unique balancing mechanism for moving and standing on its two wheels. MiP is able to find his way through its surroundings, can read and understand hand gestures, and even follow objects or things around when they move (e.g. your child or your cat). MiP is a master at stacking, dancing, roaming, and even programming. Using the iOS- and Android-compatible app, you can feed the little guy mood chips. After doing so, MiP will act in wacky ways to entertain your children.
However, for a toy released in 2014, it lacks many things. First of all, it is powered by 4 AAA batteries and requires a lot of power to operate. This means that this non-rechargeable companion will drain your batteries in no time. Another drawback is its almost-complete reliance on the smartphone/tablet app that many children do not have access to, making the toy reliant on the parent’s phones to operate.
3. Cubelets
Specs: • DIY robot kit • Magnetic parts to create a functioning robot • Unique behaviors depending on its build/how the blocks are stacked • Bluetooth enabled • App enabled
Cubelets are the perfect toy to teach your children about robotics and programming. This toy is the first step to getting your children excited about the tech world. The brick adapters connect to the brick construction that you child makes and can bring a vivid motion and life to the toy. With a set of Cubelet cubes, your child can create up to 500 unique designs, each with their own functions. The magnet faces making snapping pieces incredibly easy, and there’s essentially no wrong way to construct a robot. best arduino uno starter kit https://www.robotsden.com/which-is-the-best-arduino-starter-kit
The blocks included in a set of Cubelets are Drive, Flashlight, Distance, Brightness, Passive and Battery blocks that can be put together to create a single robot with multiple functions. Each box contains six blocks which are compatible with additional Cubelets sets. The battery blocks contain enough power to provide fun for several hours, and they are charged through a micro-USB port.
Using Bluetooth, you can update the operating system of Cubelets as well as do some fine tuning with the app (iOS- and Android-compatible). The app really helps children learn what pieces are connected and how they will interact with each neighbor cube.
Cubelets are an amazing toy for children and even adults who want to get into basic robot building. However, one set of the DIY robot kit can cost upwards of $150 and it only includes six cubes. Pay another $150 and you’ll have 12 cubes to play with. Though impressive, the price tag can really push people away from purchasing this amazing robot kit for their children.
4. HEXBUG Nano V2
Specs: • Rotating flags and tubes • Spiral tube accessory • One HexBug Nano robotic bug • AG13 battery powered • Company recommended 3+ years • Customizable configurations This toy is extremely friendly to families on a budget (around $6 for the toy) that can easily entertain children for several hours. Although it’s not as educational-focused as other robots designed for children, these little guys can teach creativity, especially when they’re paired with obstacle courses and hexbug habitats. Additional Hexbugs can be purchased, but make sure that you get the Nano V2 versions (previous models do not have a vertical climbing feature). One of the highlights of this product is the Hexbug’s ability to climb vertical obstacles. It can also climb through horizontal obstacles and loop around corners. remote control cars with camera and night vision https://www.robotsden.com/best-remote-control-car-with-night-vision
Some drawbacks with this toy is that it is quite reliant on the habitat sets that are sold separately from this kit. In addition, they can go through batteries pretty quickly so make sure to have extras on hand. Finally, although the company recommends children of at least 3 years to play with Hexbug, perhaps you should wait until your child is older since the Hexbugs themselves are choking hazards.

10 interesting trends in the design of mobile applications
https://adrenaline-studios.com/ 1. Large phone screens Working above the obvious “big design”, it is important to understand how people will keep their devices during their use. This means that first of all the elements
navigation should be arranged so that the person can easily reach out to them with your thumb (for example, the upper opposite corner is rather everything will be too far away). It is easy to think of this, is not it? Just need arrange all interactive elements to the right at the bottom of the screen. Only business complicates the fact that about 10% of users are left-handed.
You can “force” your left-handed users to hold the screen with two hands, but taking into account how big the mobile screens are now devices, more often will be used that hand, closer to which are located navigation elements. Alternatively, if you really care about your application was convenient for all users (and this is important to you), then you follow the the following condition: all navigation elements should be sufficient great for them to easily reach from either side of the screen. In addition, you have there really was more of a usable screen area, which we need to work with. Another idea is to use a custom interface with the ability to "Flip" it for left-handers.
But regardless of whether your users are better off with their right hand or on the contrary, it is important to approach the design of applications with the understanding that certain Decisions in design can entail not only a decrease in usability. interface (make it less intuitive), but also lead to fatigue and discomfort in the hands. This is an important detail that needs to be taken into account and corrected. with different types of testing.
2. Swipe - new press When the first mobile apps adapted for touchscreens appeared, designers and developers had to face the reality of programming for an object that is significantly different from the previous species. Zooming in first The 2007 iPhone was an unusual novelty for us, but the design of the application, in which the user has to zoom the page to be able to read content, can not be called successful. However, which of us did not happen
collide with a “nasty” tiny button that is too small to problems push her. Scrolling movements appear more natural when used. mobile devices, especially if you do everything with one hand. What are the proof of? Imagine that you have a phone in your hand and try to make thumb clicking on an imaginary screen. Remember your feelings. Further make a flick through the screen. What did you think more comfortable?
Of course, the most obvious example of using svayp in applications is Tinder, who simplified the incredibly complex nature of dating to two simple Action: scroll right and left. In less time that you would take viewing any trailer, you can send a signal to the whole army potential cavaliers (or ladies of the heart) - just scrolling through thumb movement on the screen of your mobile device. It seems that the ideas tinder it does not fail, as evidenced by more than a billion users of the application.
3. Wearable accessories are gaining increasing influence on application design. Tiny displays of smart watches are the opposite of huge screens phablets. Analytical firm International Data Corporation predicts that This year vendors will supply 45.7 million wearable devices, including worn on the wrist of the gadgets (they make up the largest percentage of the total number amount is 40 million), as well as items of clothing and glasses. Those devices that were originally developed as fitness gadgets are now seize all large market areas with releases of Apple Watch and Android Wear. Wearable devices are no longer advertised pedometers with mechanisms, watching pulse and sleep. They really became reliable smart gadgets, able to tell the user how long the journey will take to work, show weather forecast for tomorrow or remind to boil the kettle for the arrival of my aunt. Like this does it affect the work of mobile application designers?
We are still in the early stages of this growing trend, although Apple and
Android already offer a range of solutions for wearable devices. As creators watch-like devices, both brands emphasize the importance of information they were easily perceived from a quick glance. Unlike programs for phones and tablets, which according to the expectations of developers, users are looking for a long time, applications for wearable devices should have such a design that provides a quick user experience of sufficient amount of content. Information must be assimilated at a glance, even out of sight. This means that the font, color contrast and related factors (where is the user? what data do he need right now?) especially important in the design and development of applications for wearable devices.
And since this technology is quite new, it is incredibly important to pay attention to reviews and wishes of users and work on future updates. And bye Apple and Android can make assumptions about the future of mobile applications for wearable devices, namely, users will be the ones who Deal will determine their design.
4. Layered layouts Can an eternal discussion about what is better - flat design and skeuomorphism - end with a find of something average? Opponents of skevomorphism argue that aesthetic level the use of faded resemblance of natural textures in the context of modern IT technologies looks as tasteless as an attempt to imitate a tree on car dashboard. But even despite the recognition of connoisseurs of aesthetics in the IT world, and flat design has its drawbacks. If you remove the texture from all elements design of a mobile application, it will be difficult to determine which of them interactive, if at all possible to distinguish the boundaries between different elements interface.
Compromise is a multi-layered flat design or what Google calls "Material design". This aesthetics still relies heavily on a flat design, but some of its principles are borrowed from skeumorphism. As with the flat design, elements of multi-layered or material design are geometric in nature, filled with "monolithic" colors rather than imitating natural textures
or banal glitter, or radiance. But from skeuomorphism were borrowed metaphors from the natural world, especially in how objects interact with each other a friend. This can be seen in the shadows and other background light effects.
5. More movement Your smartphone has more performance than the equipment, thanks to which NASA managed to send the first man to the moon, as well as the supercomputer Deep Blue, who in 1997 beat Garry Kasparov in chess. And mobile devices are getting smarter and smarter. And not only mobile devices become more powerful, but with the advent of three types of 4G (each trying to overpower the other in power and speed) to replace the 3G, you have more freedom in order to animate the design of your mobile application. Animation offers many advantages for mobile app design. She is may contribute to attracting the user's attention to a particular object, bring it to the necessary action or just create a more pleasant and awesome user experience. Currently, smartphones are already enough advanced and their networks have enough power to digest HTML5 animations or parallax effects that you already use on your the computer. This year we are watching how in the design of mobile applications there are more moving elements, which has less impact on speed signal and power devices, rather than before. And this is just the flowers, because smartphones are getting smarter.
6. Simple soft colors Each year is characterized by its own color palette, and now we give preference for a very simple range of colors that are distinguished by soft contrast. This is a natural consequence of the omnipresent minimalism and flat design of mobile applications. However, the colors are selected based on current trends (in color the Pantone Spring 2015 palette gives preference to “colder and softer solutions with gentle warm tones "). Try using a template with different shades of the same color, with white font and contrasting elements. Or try pattern with only two or three muted tones.
In the context of a simple design of mobile applications, the choice is less scattered experience in which a sharp color contrast requires more attention from the eye. With a long contemplation of the luminous screen, the eyes are unlikely to tell you “Thank you” but muted tones and a softened glow (again, these are the strengths flat design) make the look and feel of the mobile app more enjoyable and complete.
7. The text goes on the scene It seems that more recently fonts in mobile applications have been introduced only secure web fonts that could be read on screens with small by permission. Over the past two years, optimization has been going on in iOS and Android. operating systems for more dynamic, scalable and readable fonts. Another side effect of big screens and technological innovation (thanks to you, TypeKit) is to use fonts to add beauty and expressiveness to the design of your mobile applications. Regardless of, is accompanying your text a huge fashionable image in the background or is it surrounded by negative space, we can use the font to report your idea in a powerful minimalist way.
8. Built-in blur One of the trends in the design of mobile applications is the background blur, which adds to the convenience of using "translucent" applications. And despite on the fact that mobile applications that close the user interface, have a clean and holistic look, they can still cause problems with usability Depending on the background image chosen by users for mobile devices, as well as the number of icons and widgets, the lack of transparency can make your application more difficult to read. Use effect blur Gaussian blur in the design of the program will make it more understandable and enjoyable for eye, while maintaining the "sound" of the user interface
9. Innovations in convenient design of mobile applications
As a bonus, we get what modern design trends actually do. applications more convenient to use. Simple layers with huge elements and fonts require less effort of the visual apparatus, while wide movements of the hand (swipe) are opposite to gestures that require more spent motility (zooming with two fingers, pressing), and are acceptable for people with problems of the musculoskeletal system. Along with the fact that Typekit allows use more lively text in the design of mobile applications without sacrifice the quality of fonts, it also makes our programs simpler in use for people with visual impairment. Increased availability of devices with large screens and phablets contributed to the fact that the design of mobile applications has become more convenient for more people. Remember that creating a user-friendly mobile app design It requires a thorough reflection on how clear and simple your product is. use for the consumer. Is this template customized for someone who can need a larger and more legible font? Creating a list of features enhancing the usability of the application can be a good idea when work on the design of your product. The Accessibility Project offers a huge amount of resources for designers and developers to help their products become accessible and convenient for more users.
10. Wiser prototyping Every application we used was once a prototype. Many experimental prototypes began with simple sketches printed on multiple sheets of paper or saved to PDF. Now when design mobile applications have become more complex, it is not enough to show only a few static layouts and force the client (or developer) to present the alleged movement. If the application is rich in animation to direct the user or attracting interest due to visual effects, your client is not able to grab all that should make the application interesting and convenient to use. To that however, flat models do not create a sufficient “wow effect”.
However, the work of programmers in the development of an experimental prototype has
its own set of headaches, because developers have to work hard on elements that may not appear in the final prototype. In order not to waste energy, designers must either very clearly describe the developers your ideas, or take in your hands the creation of a prototype so that it fits their vision.
Fortunately, there are currently enough solutions for prototyping, so the designer can do it. With minimal coding knowledge or even without them, the designer can create an experimental prototype that shows how The user must interact with the application. You can create necessary for the design of the application animation. As a result of this, you are not only Get a prototype that will amaze your potential customers, but it will also make it easier application development process. Since you have already described all the details that are important to the work of the application and its interaction with the user, developers remains start creating a product directly, without wasting your time and effort in creating infinite design versions.

Why the smart TV is still stupid - and why even OnePlus might not be able to fix it
Tumblr media
Mobile phone maker OnePlus recently caused a stir when CEO Pete Lau revealed in a breathless blog post that his company was developing a OnePlus television.
It’s a bold move to say the least, given the difficulties any new brand faces with trying to get a foothold in the notoriously tough TV market. However, the reasons Lau gave for betting on a OnePlus TV may well have struck a chord with many TV owners: “Something that seems as simple as displaying the photos from your mobile phone to a television is still difficult to achieve. With the development of AI technology, though, our imagination is endless – and we are looking forward to the future.”
Read this: The best smart TV platforms
Lau thinks today’s ‘smart’ TVs are rubbish, but he believes that that his company’s experience in developing popular user interfaces for the mobile world can transform the TV world too.
But is he right? Are today’s smart TVs really that bad? And even if they are, is a mobile phone brand really best placed to turn things around?
The trouble with Smart TVs
Having spent years testing smart TVs from pretty much every brand, I feel qualified to say that while some have got “smarter” over time, even the best sets remain far from where they should be.
The main reason for this is simple: TVs are not computers. They simply haven’t historically been designed to carry large processing brains, and so they struggle to manage the sorts of computational challenges posed by handling lots of different content sources, a rich and sophisticated interface, a search engine, user customisations, and potentially complex apps.
So it’s no surprise that some TV brands have recently started to crow about their latest TVs’ ever-more-powerful processors. And there’s no doubt that many smart platforms do indeed now run more fluidly and less buggily than they used to.
But still, smart TVs often feel awfully stupid.
For instance, trying to make the huge amounts of content options now available to any ‘connected’ TV easily accessible within the relatively static environment of a television screen is tough. Far too many years of smart TV development have focussed on the principle of quantity over quality where apps are concerned.
Do people really want their TVs to become computers?
Trying to search through and use hundreds, even thousands of apps on your TV just isn’t realistic or remotely necessary. For the vast majority of households, the only apps that really matter are video streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and the like. Yet time and again TV brands seem obsessively driven to deliver as many apps as possible, even when the vast majority of them just get in the way of the good stuff.
Some smart TV engines have at least got much better at prioritising video streaming apps in their interfaces. But tech companies would go far by learning just how little, actually, most households want from their smart TVs.
Another problem with smart TVs centres around personalisation. The ability to customise smart TV interfaces and experiences was pretty much non-existent for the first few smart TV generations, which immediately made them feel like ‘hostile environments’ – especially when compared with their mobile devices.
Once again, things have improved over the last couple of years. However, even where a smart TV system such as LG’s webOS or Samsung’s Eden system does allow plenty of customisation, the means to achieving that customisation seldom feel very intuitive – assuming a user even realises the customisation features exist at all.
Plus there are some key platforms – Android TV, we’re looking at you – that still put far too little control in their users’ hands.
Some attempts have been made to improve the user experience by having TVs ‘learn’ your viewing preferences, so that they can prioritise or ‘push’ links to content they think you’ll like. The lack of in-TV brainpower and back-end support for this, though, along with the way TVs are generally shared devices used by multiple members of a household, have generally made such recommendation/preference systems feel more dictatorial than helpful.
A horrible, painful history of interfaces….
How you actually use your smart TV menus is also a massive problem, as history has also attested to. Trying to use a TV remote control to access complex user interfaces can feel like trying to pull out wisdom teeth with tweezers – especially when it comes to having to type in email addresses and passwords.
And again, efforts have been made to overcome this. LG’s ‘Magic Remotes’ let you just point your remote at the part of the screen you want to select, while Philips provides remotes with some of its TVs that have full QWERTY keyboards on their rears. A new generation of ‘smart’ remote controls, on the other hand, have sought to drastically strip back the button count in a bid to make using smart TVs easier. But these tend to fail as soon as you want to do something beyond the most basic adjustments.
#neverforget
Samsung even disastrously attempted a few years back to enable you to control your TV by waving your hand about, an idea unsurprisingly scuppered by the hand gestures being ridiculously tiring to perform, seldom recognised properly by the TV’s crappy (and ill-advised) built-in camera. Not to mention it made you feel pretty stupid in the presence of friends and family.
The first attempts by Samsung’s TV division to introduce primitive voice controls were also a pretty abject failure. The TV seldom understood you properly, and required such specific phrases and dialogue ‘pathways’ that you practically had to learn a new language to use them. Which, of course, nobody in the real world could be bothered to do.
Voice control on TVs has undergone something of a renaissance over the past 18 months, thanks to the arrival of much more advanced voice recognition platforms (such as Amazon’s Alexa). Strangely, though, if my household and the households of my friends are anything to go by, people are much less inclined to talk to their TV than they are to a phone or a smart speaker.
The sorts of smart TV issue I’ve discussed here are, I guess, precisely what makes OnePlus think there’s a massive opportunity for it to make a name for itself in the TV hardware world. Experience, though, isn’t exactly in its favour…
Can OnePlus change the Smart TV world?
The first thing to say is that OnePlus is far from the first chiefly mobile brand that reckons it can revolutionise the TV world. Sony, LG and Samsung, of course, all have mobile divisions. Though crucially, in the case of these companies, their TV business pre-dates their mobile business.
If Apple still hasn’t found a way to bring its smart TV to market almost a decade after first talking about it, you have to wonder if OnePlus can
Apple has famously dropped numerous hints about how it thinks it could change the smart TV world. Current CEO Tim Cook stated back in 2012, “When I go into my living room and turn on the TV, I feel like I have gone backwards in time by 20 to 30 years. It’s an intense area of interest [for Apple]. I can’t say more than that.”
Even more famously, Apple founder Steve Jobs says in his official biography by Walter Isaacson that, “I’d like to create an integrated television set that is completely easy to use. It would be seamlessly synced with all of your devices and with iCloud… It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine. I finally cracked it.”
Except that if Jobs did crack it, we’ve never got to see the results. This is pretty telling. For if even a brand with the interface track record and vast resources of Apple still hasn’t found a way (or a reason) to bring an Apple television to market almost a decade after first talking about it, you have to wonder where OnePlus will be different.
Read this: A guide to Google Assistant for TVs
Then there’s Android TV. Google’s stab at ‘revolutionising’ the smart TV space from a computer/mobile device background lead to what has now long been for me the worst smart TV interface of all. Found on Sony and Philips (Europe) TVs, among others, its interface is clunky, its layout shows little understanding of what TV users really want to prioritise, it’s traditionally been very buggy, and it’s painfully short of customisation options.
It does, at least, offer instant compatibility with Chromecast and, on recent implementations, Google Assistant. Android TV delivers at least a sense of the all-round system integration that Steve Jobs was talking about. But to say it still has a long way to go would be a pretty epic understatement.
LG’s webOS story might give us – and OnePlus – a bit more hope. This Linux-based operating system was originally developed by Palm for use on its portable devices. But it eventually ended up being owned by LG, which poured huge resources into turning it into what was on its TV launch in 2014 easily the most attractive, slick, easy to use and sensibly focused operating system in the smart TV world.
The thing about webOS, though, is that while aspects of the operating system came from a mobile background, the company that took it and turned it into a TV operating system was approaching its R&D from very much a TV background and perspective.
So the big question is, has OnePlus really taken all of this history into consideration with its own TV plans? Will it really understand that what works for mobile will not necessarily work for TV? That the TV and mobile worlds are actually arguably polar opposites when it comes to developing user interfaces?
Has OnePlus really taken all of this history into consideration with its own TV plans?
In fact, I can’t help but wonder if most people even want their TVs to be smart. Or, at least, smart beyond being able to access just the most basic TV streaming services.
Televisions are fundamentally passive, ‘laid back’ devices. People have spent decades just turning them on, sitting back and relaxing. Do they really want TVs to suddenly become effectively computers, complete with all the bugs, crashes, complexity and endless firmware updates that entails?
The fact that TVs are predominantly shared experiences, too, limits how ‘smart’ they can truly be. It’s hard or even impossible to deliver an intuitive, customised experience that works for all the separate members of a particular household.
With all this in mind, I can’t help but wonder if the best way forward might be to actually make TVs dumber again, and outsource their ‘smartness’ and operating systems. Maybe to external set top boxes, or even better, to devices such as mobile phones and tablets that are much better placed to handle them.
Read next: How to control your TV with Alexa
Research shows time and again that more and more of us are ‘second screening’ already when watching TV, so why not simply reproduce the TV’s full operating system on phones and tablets so that they essentially become advanced remote controls for your TV?
It’s possible, of course, that this sort of thing is exactly what OnePlus has in mind. Or maybe the brand really does have some hitherto unimagined insight into TV interface design that will finally convince us all that the humble gogglebox need be humble no more
Honestly, I hope it does. But it’s fair to say while we wait and see that the weight of history is seriously stacked against it.
