Kimono Refashioned
Japan's Impact on International Fashion
Edited by Yuki Morishima and Rie Nii, Essays by Akiko Fukai, Cynthia Amnéus, Katherine Anne Paul, Karin G. Oen, Yuki Morishima, and Rie Nii
Asian Art Museum, San Francisco 2018, 134 pages, 24x28cm, ISBN 978-0-939 117-85-7

Spanning East to West, kimonos and kimono-influenced designs are everywhere, from high-end couturiers such as Yohji Yamamoto and Gucci to Main Street fashion chains such as Uniqlo and H&M. In Kimono Refashioned, contributors explore the impact of the kimono on the fashion world, charting how these striking and elegant unisex garments came to transcend their traditional Japanese design origins. Featuring highlights from the renowned Kyoto Costume Institute, this lavish volume documents Japanese and Western designs, men's and women's apparel, and both exacting and impressionistic references to the kimono. Contributors from the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, the Newark Museum, and the Cincinnati Art Museum join curators from the Kyoto Costume Institute to reflect upon the wide-range of motifs used to decorate kimonos, the form and silhouette of the Japanese traditional dress, and how its basic two-dimensional structure and linear cut have been refashioned into a wide array of garments. As captivating as the kimono itself, this book will be a must-have for fashionistas and Asian art aficionados alike.

Dress your Livestock game:
Since you have so many livestock to take care of, I am going to give you some outfits and you are to choose for whom they would fit best:
(1) a little black dress (revealing)
(2) a gothic dress (of your choice)
(3) formal channel suit (pinkish or blueish; specify)
(4) Anne Boleyn dress
(5) male suit (like you have for a female livestock)
(6) Lolita dress
(7) formal kimono
One outfit, one livestock.
Because I am very curious!!!
“So many livestock to take care of…? What on earth are you talking about? Oi, don’t just leave all these resplendent garments on my doorstep. I have no use for—“
Tumblr media
Before he could finish speaking, Ruki found himself alone with one scanty yet silky smooth little black dress, two midnight onyx gothic dresses, three tweed Chanel suits (two in pale pink, one in baby blue), four Anne Boleyn dresses that spilled onto the floor when removed from the packaging, five extravagant suits of a masculine style, six pastel-colored lolita dresses, and seven unisex formal kimonos, all adorned with ornate patterns and shapes.
Tumblr media
“Good grief… I don’t have the time, space, nor patience for this. Though I already have ideas of who to assign each outfit to. Yes, these shall suit them quite nicely… If they are so willing to don such unusual attire, that is. I suppose a master must reward his livestock every now and then.”
Tumblr media
First, the Vampire examined the little black dress, stunningly beautiful despite not leaving much to the imagination.
“Ah, this dress doesn’t reveal the stomach at least. In that case, it’s perfect for Irina ( @iricathel ). While it’s not modest in the chest area, it would suit her hourglass figure to a T.”
Tumblr media
Second came the two gothic dresses, the color of umbral shadow much like the previous garment.
“Hm… I always see him crossdressing. In fact, this seems to be right up Lukas’ ( @princesscrownprince ) alley. It wouldn’t be his first choice, sure, but something tells me he won’t ever quiet down over receiving an unsolicited gift from me. Well, no matter. I’ll gladly give this to him.”
A redheaded Ghoul who often wore Victorian style clothing came to mind with the other gothic dress.
“It’s rare for me to gift anything to Scarlett ( @kindan-no-kanojo ), but I get the feeling she would not only appreciate this dress, but also look marvelous in it as well. The lack of hue contrasts immaculately with her vivid red hair.”
Tumblr media
Third came the formal Chanel suits. A stubborn yet resolute girl bearing the mark of a crown and his benefactor’s initial came to mind for the blue one in particular.
“How appropriate for a student council president. I ought to give this to Caria ( @cursed--requiem ). Surely she can’t refuse such sophisticated garb.”
After remembering a ball with the half-Vibora half-Founder, it became clear to Ruki who should don one of the pink suits.
“Ah, Aleksi ( @besnella )… This pink suit would complement her auburn locks perfectly. She seems like a very determined woman despite our short time acquainting ourselves with one another, but I’d certainly like to see her wear this.”
One pink suit remained. A diligent Vampire who refused to prey on innocence surfaced in his thoughts.
“Somehow this outfit looks like it belongs in Maria’s ( @veiledsagacity ) wardrobe. It undoubtedly gives off an educated and reserved vibe. Come to think of it, I haven’t asked her for her date of birth, yet she gifted me presents for my own birthday. I hope she will appreciate the gesture in return.”
Tumblr media
Next, Ruki took out the Anne Boleyn dresses, pondering to himself who should accept such intricately designed clothing reminiscent of eras past. A lavender-haired Witch immediately came to mind.
“Josephine ( @thatonefrenchwitch ) would look utterly remarkable in this dress. I can already picture her long hair cascading over such lustrous fabric. Heh, she’d truly look like a Witch wearing this. I truly can’t wait to see it.”
Then a certain blonde came to mind, one with a penchant for fashion.
“Ah, it may not be her style per se, but Serena ( @serenaleblanc ) would look absolutely breathtaking if she were to don this dress. Perhaps she can even appraise the worth of such mysterious clothing as well, given her talents.”
Visions of a cheeky bandaged girl wearing one of the Anne Boleyn dresses swirled in his imagination.
“Indeed, Shoma ( @komori--shoma ) might not be opposed to wearing this. I’m certain she’d appear bewitching, wearing such vibrant colors against her alabaster hair and complexion.”
Last but not least, Ruki considered his benefactor’s very own daughter.
“There is no dress out of this selection more appropriate for the daughter of Karlheinz-sama. Yes, Yuuko ( @sakamaki--yuuko ) wouldn’t oppose to wearing this, especially when she’d look like a princess straight from a fable.”
Tumblr media
Drastically different from the other selections, the Vampire then averted his gaze to the five suits. He set aside three for his brothers, leaving two left for a generous gift. The taciturn yet intellectual classmate and companion from the academy could use formal attire, or so Ruki surmised.
“Come to think of it, I’ve never seen Virek ( @crimson-mayhem ) wear anything quite as dignified as this. I do look forward to his reaction when I give this suit to him… Perhaps he’ll utter a word or two and nothing more, but what matters is that he wears it in the end.”
Then his much adored bounty hunter came to mind. Indeed, Ruki looked forward to seeing the half-Founder wear extravagant attire as if they were attending a grand event under cover together.
“Ah, Mystic ( @mino-diabolik )… You would look even more ravishing than you already do in this suit. It’s not often that I give him any sort of tangible gift, but I do hope he appreciates it nonetheless.”
Tumblr media
Nearing the bottom of the abundance of clothes, Ruki directed his attention towards the delicately adorned lolita dresses. The girl who supposedly respected his benefactor just as much, if not more than he did very clearly had a penchant for this type of garb. A smile rose on his lips after realizing the heaven-made match.
“Nunnally ( @lured-into-wonderland ) is wearing this—no ifs, ands, or buts about it. It’s an order she cannot refuse, not that I believe she would anyway. It would appear wondrous on her.”
The elven maid surfaced in his thoughts as well. A promising reward for one so steadfast.
“This would compliment Estella’s ( @yourlocaltea ) silver hair with the utmost pulchritude. It may be a bit childish for her but regardless I believe she should wear other clothes aside from her servant attire.”
Next, an ostensibly cheerful sacrifice came to mind.
“Honestly, it’s difficult for me to imagine Sunny ( @sunny-flower-spot ) wearing such an elaborate dress, but it’s equally as bright and light-hearted as her. I’m sure it’s in her nature to try new things every now and then.”
And how could he forget the obnoxious pink-haired shapeshifter?
“Ah, Metsu ( @metsu-san )… This lolita dress looks a bit fancy for her liking, and knowing her she might ruin it somehow, but it’s better to give her this than any of the other options.”
Furthermore, the aspiring dance instructor also looked like a suitable fit for the lolita attire.
“Fiona ( @misslittlefounder ) should wear this. The many ruffles and bows are a tad feminine but nonetheless I can see her donning the dress with aplomb.”
Unlike the previous girls, a woman with a more dark and defiant aesthetic to her arose in his vision.
“How ironic would it be to give such a pastel dress to Kira ( @yourlocaltea ), of all people? I’d be humored to see that.”
Tumblr media
Finally, only the fancy kimonos required recipients at this point. The Vampire rummaged through the deluxe clothing and textiles, vacillating between options on the fortune person who would wear the spectacular garb, impressive enough to strike inspiration in all who laid eyes upon it. Specifically a deft and beloved painter.
“I’m certainly no artist, but not even the most skilled in the world could capture Ellen’s ( @ana-darkcloud ) beauty if they were to wear this kimono. I should give it to them posthaste.”
Idols would often model these traditional outfits in spirit of the festivals that took place in Japan, however, knowing that Kuron took on both the role of idol and teacher, Ruki surmised a summer festival would be just what he needed to reserve a day of respite to himself.
“This kimono would suit Kuron ( @mukami-kuron-mrsadisticcat ) splendidly indeed. I know he most likely already has his own, but I’m hoping he will at least accept this as a token of my gratitude.”
Speaking of which, students would frequent such events as well. Including a particular girl from the academy, or so the Vampire thought.
“Angelica ( @dialovers-angelica ) might not have a proper kimono for this summer after all. Last time I checked, her family isn’t exactly affluent and the garments tend to be expensive. Therefore, she ought to be impressed with this formal wear. I wonder if she has ever worn one so elegant.”
While Ruki still didn’t know Nami Arisu all that well yet, he hoped to close the distance between them and use an opportune moment where they could both go outdoors in their kimono to better acquaint themselves with one another.
“Hm… That girl from the academy would look charming in a formal kimono. She seemed interested in my cooking and the books I’ve read, so perhaps Nami ( @sunturbogel ) might appreciate this gift from me as well.”
Although she was far from mortal, Ruki considered giving a kimono to his coveted acquaintance who also attended the academy. Cyra Abbas, a woman who, unbeknownst to the Vampire, lived on this earth far longer than he could’ve imagined.
“I realize that Cyra ( @cyra-abbas ) usually sticks to her white and gold aesthetic, but I do think that a formal kimono such as this would bring out her beauty so effortlessly. Perhaps her and I can explore the festivities in Japan and indulge in all the local cuisine.”
Daughter of Beatrix and Karlheinz, he determined Ayame Sakamaki would radiate an unforeseen glory donning such a cultural symbol.
“Ayame ( @sakamakiayame ) most likely hasn’t experienced too many opportunities to wear this exquisite garb. It’s time we change that.”
Once again, last but not least, his dear fallen seraph sprung to mind. Perhaps incisions could be made in the fabric to accommodate for their wings, but Ruki longed to see his beloved Azazel don an extravagant look, perhaps one that might temporarily distract them from the recent inner turmoil of a shattering halo and contemplations of the afterlife.
“This array of rich patterns and honored craftsmanship looks like the type of attire Azazel ( @ana-darkcloud ) might adore. I’d love to see my dear angel wear it.”
After deciding who would obtain which clothing, the Vampire sighed in exhaustion, preparing the garments for their proper imparting.  Just observing all the various textiles in their lavish details down to every delicate thread encouraged Ruki to wear a sumptuous ensemble of his own. A suit as dark as his own cinereous black strands and a tie ivory as his fangs.
“With this, everything is ready.”
Tumblr media
🧩 DISCLAIMER: THE AU’S ARE STILL SEPARATE. I JUST COULDN’T THINK OF A BETTER WAY TO DISCUSS ALL OF THEM IN ONE GO WITH EVERYTHING STILL MAKING SENSE 😭 but I promise there is no infidelity happening here. This isn’t a harem Rooks scenario. Anyway, I apologize for any unwanted tags but I also wanted to find a loophole that would allow me to include more than just seven OCs. Feel free to reply if you want but omg I might end up typing starters for each person mentioned with the outfit they are receiving… Who knows. We’ll see if my motivation permits me to do so, ahaha. In any event, I thought this was such a cute idea. I’d love more asks like this in the future honestly. 🏃‍♀️ 🧩

Edo Flashback Character Design
That Kashimo flashback is living in my head rent free so let me ramble about the character design (particularly hair) and how it tells us a lot about these people in just a few panels.
Ishigoori & girlfriend/wife
Tumblr media
I see a lot of people making fun of Ishigoori for being bald... hate to tell you this but 90% of men back then had some variation of this hairstyle. Kashimo & Kenjaku aren't the norm but I'll get to that.
The topknot of the ichomage is quite long and a bit thicker with the top of his head widely shaven. Overall, a very tight and clean look usually seen more among Edo city folk, which I think can be interpreted as him being being pretty fashionable and in touch with modern trends despite being a samurai living up in the north. His clothing looks casual and he's waving his naked feet around, so I'm assuming this is his house they're in. He seems to be pretty well off, looking at the conditions of it.
Now his girlfriend is the main reason I think this takes place somewhere between 1600-1650 aka very early Edo period. She has long flowing hair, not pinned up like it would be common during the heights of the Edo period, and she seems to be wearing a kosode (short sleeves, unisex belt and wider cut unlike kimonos) which started to go out of fashion by mid 1600s. It was a trademark of upper class women around the time this takes place, showing again that she and Ishigoori must be well off.
Tumblr media
(ca. 1615)
(Kashimo & Kenjaku under the cut)
Kashimo
Tumblr media
(gonna use they/them for Kashimo because if Hakari doesn't gender them, neither will I)
Now, Kashimo immediately sticks out for being unshaven and having their hair all waving about. Very unprofessional. I'm pretty sure Akutami's main influence here was Takezo from Vagabond which also takes place around the same time. Subsequently, we immediately know that Kashimo doesn't take part in polite society. They're only wearing a plain dirty yukata(?) and don't care much about appearance (sickness might play a role too). It could also be that Kashimo is simply so unchallenged that they don't even bother getting into more proper combat gear like in modern times. Anyone who sees them, besides Kenjaku, will likely die anyway without them needing to spend much effort, so why bother.
Kenjaku
Tumblr media
Okay, so Kenjaku is really interesting. First of all, for a man their hair is way too long and loose. My guess is that this person originally had a chasenmage or sohatsu style and then grew it out or Kenjaku grew it it out. Both styles were popular among young men around 1600. Sohatsu was worn by confucian scholars and doctors in learning until the early Edo period and then got picked up by samurai later in the era, 1750+ (also became popular among ronin). Either way, their hair still rarely reached past their shoulders, so Kenjaku's style is definitely unusual. The hairstyle was already seen as a bit extravagant, so Kenjaku probably appeared eccentric/flamboyant (bit fruity) to the general population. Actually some of the hairstyles of the women on the painting further up in this post look closer to this than the typical sohatsu...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(left: chasenmage, right: sohatsu)
Generally, they are wearing pretty light clothing both in fabric and colour (this is the first time we see them wearing light colours) that are in a modern style considering the time period but nothing outstanding, more on the casual side. The clothes Ishigoori is wearing look like they're from higher quality material than this. What I find interesting is that they don't have any sort of sigil on their haori despite being out in public, so they either removed it or the person they took over doesn't belong to any big family. The sandals that they are wearing together with the comfortable clothing indicate to me that they are traveling a lot, otherwise they would wear gesa (would also be more practical on a bloody battlefield...) or zori. If they really did just come from Mutsu, that would be appropriate. Very busy making binding vows I guess.
Considering they said their body isn't suitable for fighting, they don't have any weapons on them that we can see, and this is Kenjaku we are talking about, I would say their body probably used to be a wandering physician or scholar with political ties and that's why they took over this body. But who knows. Definitely very gender.

Alrighty, a question! Don't exactly even need to know, but I'm curious. Which japanese names are used gender neutral? I have heard of a few, like Tsubaki, Akira, Minato and so on, but a list would be nice. On another note, Erika is a japanese name as well as german, right? Like Yuka is both an Inuit and japanese name x3 I do find it funny that complete different ends of the world could have such small things in common.
gender expressions & impressions of jp given names depend on: (1) the precise characters it comprises of, (2) the reading it uses, (3) societal trends and sentiments, and (4) each individual’s personal perception (and experience) of gender and the name. therefore, sooooo many names out there can be considered unisex and/or gender-neutral! there are hundreds of thousands of possible character combinations you can use to create given names, and what’s more to love is that unisex and gender-neutral names are pretty sought-after, especially in the modern day and the foreseeable future. we love our unisex names and we’re very proud of them!
if there’s any specific theme of names you’d like to see, you can send in an ask with your criterias and i’ll compile you a list. besides my gdoc of rare and unusual jp given names i shared in my previous post, i also have this gdoc of generic/basic/average jp given names you can sort through if you’d like.
indeed, erika and yuka are names that can exist in the jp language. maybe this tip will help with remembering and identification? you can make given names out of almost any set of syllables from the japanese syllabary, as long as it’s within reason (e.g. sounds good as a name, seems logical or plausible, 1–5 syllables in one name, etc.).
Tumblr media
(apologies for the deep-fried quality haha—this is the only kana-to-romaji chart i have ever saved, because i prefer linguistic charts to be as plain-colored, plain-fonted, and plain-formatted as possible.)
for clan/family names however, the rules aren’t as lax because most of them follow kanji and the most standard readings for said kanji. a small % of family names have a mix of kanji + kana in them, which still follow the standard readings of the kanji + of course the unchangeable readings of the kana. only very few (native, non-transcribed) family names out there are entirely written in kana (a real-life example of this is つわぶき峻 Tsuwabuki Toshi, the stage actor who played sakusa in the haikyuu stageplay). oh, and, because we can never have too many exceptions, jp culture also has this very unique occurrence where sometimes, some certain family names get to be as lax as given names in terms of the grapheme-to-phoneme relation, and some people have decided use this opportunity to be very punny wordplayers. these are very few in number, however, and they have history behind them! so i wouldn’t recommend the average writer/artist/fictionist to come up with some on their own. examples of this last one:
一 Ninomae | 一 means “one” | “ninomae” sounds like you’re saying 二の前, “before two”
小鳥遊 Takanashi | 小鳥遊 means “small birds play” | “takanashi” sounds like you’re saying 鷹無し, “there are no hawks/eagles” | ergo, small birds play outside because there’s no hawk preying around.
四月朔日/四月一日/四月朔/四月朔月 Watanuki | 四月朔日/四月一日 means “first of april” | “watanuki” refers to this word 綿抜き, “cotton-stripping; to take out the cotton [padding]” | there’s an old tradition of changing winter-wear cotton-lined warming robes and kimono into lighter summer-wear garments in the 1st day of the 4th lunar month, which is said to prevent children from suffering diseases and potentially dying. i’m a bit confused at what the big deal is with this tradition, because it just seems like common sense to me? seasons change and so do your clothes. that’s normal.
月見里 Yamanashi | 月見里 means “moon-viewing village” | “yamanashi” sounds like you’re saying 山無し, “there are no mountains” | ergo, you can see the moon and do some stargazing if your view isn’t obstructed by mountains. although, i have to point out the fallacy in this logic, as someone who lives surrounded by 3 whole mountain ranges, i know fully well that mountains only obscure a very small % to none at all of your ground view of the night sky. “starless” nights are all the clouds and pollution’s fault! so really, this name should’ve been called Kumonashi (from 雲無し, “cloudless”) instead.
i could’ve sworn i knew more than 4 of these punny family names...
(edit: i found more!)
飛鳥 Asuka | 飛鳥 means “flying bird” | “asuka” refers to the place name 明日香 (“tomorrow fragrance”) | basically, what happened here is that the word 飛鳥 (hichou), coming from the phrase 飛ぶ鳥の (tobu tori no, “flying bird of...”), became a pillow word for the place known as Asuka. both spellings were historically interchangeable.
春日 Haruma, Kasuga, Kasuka | 春日 means “spring sun; spring day” | the word 春日 (shunjitsu/haruhi) was used as a pillow word to introduce the place name Kasuga (which presumably had no kanji writing prior to this?). existing logical readings for 春日 include Haruhi and Haruka.
漢 Hata | 漢 means “han chinese”, the worldwide major ethnic group originating in china | “hata” sounds like you’re saying はた/端, “nearby; besides”
日向 Higa, Higano, Hina, Hinada, Hinata, Hiuga (Fiuga), Hyuga, Hyuuga | 日向 means “in the sun; [facing] towards the sun” | (1) for the Hinata reading; this name is composed of 日 (hi, “sun”) +‎ な (na, old japanese possessive particle, equivalent to modern の) +‎ た (ta, “direction; side”, archaic equivalent of 方). (2) for the Fiuga, Hiuga, and Hyuuga readings; dialectal differences shifted old japanese reading “Pimuka” into “Fimuka” → “Fiuga” → “Hiuga”. southern dialects and languages tend to have this fi- sound that’s nonexistent up in the north. (3) Hiruga may be explained as 「昼日」 (hiru + ka, “daytime sun”) with a rendaku 日 (turning the “-ka” into “-ga”, which is unnecessary, because rendaku doesn’t commonly happen to 日, but everything is full of exceptions today, so... 🤷). existing logical readings of 日向 include Hikou, Himuka, Himukai, Himuki, and Nikkou.
陽向 Hizashi | 陽向 means “in the sun; [facing] towards the sun” | “hizashi” sounds like you’re saying 日差し (may also be written 陽差し、日射し、陽射し、日ざし、陽ざし、日差、or 陽射), “sunlight; sunshine; sun rays”
五十嵐 Igarashi | 五十嵐 means “fifty storms/tempests” | “igarashi” sounds like you’re saying 伊賀嵐, “iga [city] storm” | i believe this may be a reference to the huge storm in 1612 which destroyed the famous iga-ueno castle.
五月雨 Samidare | 五月雨 means “fifth [lunar] month rain”, referring to the heavy rains that occur around early summer | “samidare” sounds like you’re saying 早水垂れ, “early rain fall” | this is a word (for the seasonal occurrence), a place name, and a destroyer name; not family name. i just thought it was cool enough to mention here!
時雨 Shigure | 時雨 means “timely rain; winter rainfall” (originally referred to rainshowers in late autumn to early winter, occasionally late summer and all of autumn too, but today, shigure only refers to a winter rainshower) | “shigure” sounds like you’re saying the classical/literary verb 時雨れる, “to rain a shower” | the history is a bit blurry on this one. 時雨, as a word, was an orthographic borrowing from chinese. it happened a hefty long time ago, and was incorporated into old japanese as the classical verb 時雨る (shiguru), which was later given the modern rendering 時雨れる (shigureru), which then presumably became the clan name Shigure.
日本 Yamatono | 日本 means “base/foundation/origin of the sun” and is the modern name for japan | “yamatono” sounds like you’re saying 大和の, “of the yamato people’s” | 大和 (yamato) was the ancient name for japan before it was changed to 日本 (nihon/nippon), and also the name of an ancient province, the name of the current dynasty (and consequently, the imperial family as well), the name of an old battleship, and is sometimes still used to refer to japanese people in a historic way. it’s worth noting that the reading of “yamato” itself isn’t grammatically logical for the kanji 大和. my best theories as to how 大和 became yamato are: (1) homophone of 山都 (“mountain metropolis”), (2) homophone of 山門 (“mountain gateway”), and (3) homophone of 山人 (“mountain people”); but i haven’t seen any proper, in-depth linguistic study done on this, so i can’t guarantee anything. the kanji 倭 [yamato, shitaga.u | wa, i] was likely based on 大和 after it got its “yamato” reading, so 倭 isn’t an important factor in this discussion (as of right now, at least).
hope this answers your curiosity!

Hello, I have a weird question but maybe you can answer it. When I was a teenager I was gifted a yukata and taught to tie the obi to make it look like a bow. That was cute then, but now that I'm in my mid 30s I wonder if this is still appropriate. Are there other ways to tie the obi of a yukata that are maybe a bit more mature ? I love wearing my yukata, but I'm starting to get self-conscious about maybe being too old for that… (I only wear it for matsuri in Japan so it's not like it's often, but it makes me even more self-conscious because I am very clearly not Japanese so I don't want to look ridiculous.) Thank you !
Hi fellow mid-30's kimono wearer :D It's true some styles can feel a bit weird depending on ages.
Tumblr media
Though nothing truly forbids you to keep wearing bunko musubi, if you don't feel confortable with a bow knot or its variations (for ex. this one or this one?), don't despair! there are many (like MANY) other knots which would work with your age and "status" :D
If you wish for something classical, I'd recommend:
Kai no kuchi musubi (clam mouth knot) - a super all purpose knot, worn by women and men alike. It's been around for ages and never went out of style!
Ronin musubi (ronin knot) or katabasami - unisex knots that have been around for a long time too, pretty sturdy and chic.
Karuta musubi (card knot) - easy to tie and quite flat so perfect if you have to ride a car/train or sit on Western chairs.
Taiko musubi (drum knot) or tsunodashi musubi (also called Ginza musubi) - you can fake those ones (usually tied with wider obi) with a hanhaba obi, see examples here and here.
More on the novelty side :
Kamifusen musubi (paper balloon knot) - a more whimsical knot but could still work depending on your style. It asks for preparation but it's very cute :)
Neko mimi musubi (cat ears knot) - there are many variations, with or without hanhaba obi - look at this one for ex
Not-tied obi, a super modern way of wearing obi. Ayaaya has a lot a those, check for example this one and look at her socials for more (especially "frilly" variations)
Any variations of what I call the "waterfall" musubi, where obi ends are elegantly arranged thanks to elastique belts. It's super fashionable atm, see it shown step by step on Billy Matsunaga's channel.
To go further, searching for "hanhaba obi musubi" will gives you a lot of other ideas ;)
Hope it helps, and that you'll have a lot of fun at matsuri!
