Infographic Research

While I was scrolling through the Snapchat News/Story section I came across a few infographics used to display information and I thought I’d review them a little.

1. Modern Dating

I didn’t pick these for the content it was just the ones I came across when scrolling through. The first thing I notice about this infographic is the overuse of uppercaps, it almost feels like I’m getting shouted at and surrounded by loads and loads of information that I can’t take in all at once. The content itself is pretty useful but just the way it is displayed isn’t that pleasing to the eye. The colours used also are a little clashed, the reds, pinks, purples all of a similar tone. The striking pinky/purple almost looks like it’s glowing hurts your eyes if you look at it too much, the last screen especially when it’s making the final remarks it is very hard to actually read, especially with the red flag images above. I do quite like the illustration style, I think they work although they all are slighty diffeeent, I think they should’ve incorporated some of the same features like the same eyes, same mouth etc. Because some are pictured with eyes and some without. I like the style of them just the way all are unique it looks like a bunch of designers have created this and maybe they have but I think it should look a lot more consistent.

2. Most popular ‘first’ car bought

So the next infographic I spotted was this one about finding out which car was the most popular to buy as your first. I read through the content and there are loads of great information that is useful to the reader! It’s just a shame how again it is displayed in all caps and in a display typeface not for body copy. I think the typeface is good, but just headings. The only thing is they’ve used a drop shadow on the text which makes it feel like a 2008 piece of work, maybe if that was removed it would help it a little more! This infographic has more structure than the other one as it is displayed in sections for each topic considered. Regarding illustrations, I like the first one on the first screen of the green car although that seems to be on for illustrations it only shows photographs after that, I think if they are going to use illustrations maybe stick with the theme especially if they’re good! They then display what car was the most popular but it’s just sort of displayed in the same way as the rest of the content and you would think that because this is the main purpose of the article it should be a lot more impactful, just a thought. They then use a table to display insurance prices which is a great layout and very easy to read. It then goes on to display facts which are useful to those maybe wanting to purchase. A good infographic content wise just a few design issues for me personally.
